- 0:01Love carries the weight. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #12114 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:11Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:13yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:15Christine Stark. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:19You may think love is something you feel, but upgraded thinking
- 0:22knows love is something you pick up and carry.
- 0:25Here's the story. In 1996, a Navy SEAL named Matt
- 0:30Stark was diagnosed with brain cancer.
- 0:33His SEAL team called him the Pull Up King.
- 0:36Surgery left him paralyzed from the neck down.
- 0:39He spent months learning to walk, talk and eat again.
- 0:42His goal was to live to 30. Over the next 20 years, he was
- 0:46told at least three times that he had less than six months to
- 0:50live. He kept setting new goals.
- 0:53Make it to his birthday, make it to the kids first day of first
- 0:56grade, make it to Halloween. When doctors told his wife,
- 0:59Christine, to take him home, she promised to take him anywhere he
- 1:03wanted to go. He chose Alaska.
- 1:06It took more than a year, but they did it.
- 1:08In 2019, a seizure put him in a coma.
- 1:12Christine said the doctors told them there was nothing more to
- 1:15be done. Then he started breathing on his
- 1:17own and squeezing their hands. So the family took him home.
- 1:21But not to pass in Hospice, their oldest son, Garrett,
- 1:25started filming. He lifted his dad into pools,
- 1:28carried him into onto rides at Disney, carried him back across
- 1:33the sand at the beach, carried him through a cruise cabin too
- 1:36narrow for the wheelchair. His younger brothers helped,
- 1:40Garrett said. Quote.
- 1:41I wanted to show people that just because you can't talk or
- 1:44walk, you can still be part of everyday life.
- 1:46In quote, some people reported the family to social services
- 1:50for taking him out of the hospital.
- 1:52The family kept going. On June 20th, 2020, Matt died at
- 1:57a resort in Florida on a family staycation the day after his
- 2:01son's birthday party. Not in a hospital with his
- 2:04family. 24 years after that first diagnosis, they carried
- 2:10him out covered in an American flag.
- 2:14Love isn't only what you feel, it's what you're willing to
- 2:18carry. Even when a wheelchair won't
- 2:20fit, stairs to get into an entrance or sandy beach that's
- 2:24hard to walk across, love brings them anyway.
- 2:28Our culture defines love mainly by emotion, but ancient times it
- 2:32was defined by a strength that could take care of oneself and
- 2:36the ability to take care of others.
- 2:38It's a mark of maturity when there is excess capacity to care
- 2:42for more than just oneself. The better story to tell
- 2:46yourself is the strength of my love is shown in how much I can
- 2:50carry. Somebody in your life is getting
- 2:53left out of everyday life. An aging parent, a friend who
- 2:57stopped getting invited, a Co worker eating lunch alone.
- 3:01You need to pick them up and bring them along.
- 3:04You may never need to physically pick up a loved one or transport
- 3:07them from place to place, but you can pick someone up just by
- 3:10including them walking across the room and introducing
- 3:14yourself or just carrying someone in your memory.
- 3:19Go carry somebody today. Tell me a story of someone who
- 3:22carried you to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:26Send someone a text and ask them who's carried you when you
