- 0:21for the non profit sector Monday, even as the Artificial Intelligence Company
- 0:25filed to sell shares to the public for the first time. The
- 0:28maker of the AI assistant, Claude, said the moves are all part
- 0:31of its broader strategy for compounding good. Anthropic launched a new Cloud
- 0:37for Nonprofits plugin created with 30 nonprofits to be more responsive to
- 0:41their specific needs. It will also broaden its Cloud Core program that
- 0:45embeds fellows with nonprofits to help them better utilize AI by also
- 0:49making consultants available to help organizations with smaller, shorter-term projects. This work
- 0:55is so core to who we are as a public benefit corporation.
- 0:59Elizabeth Kelly, Anthropics Head of Beneficial Deployments, told the Associated Press. We
- 1:04were founded to ensure that we're both developing AI safely and responsibly,
- 1:08and that we're deploying it in a way that really benefits everyone,
- 1:11including those who are too often left behind. Earlier this month, Anthropic
- 1:16announced plans to commit 5 of its shares to a new Anthropic
- 1:20public benefit fund that could be used for large-scale donations to nonprofits
- 1:24or directly distributed to groups of people adversely impacted by AI. The
- 1:29fund and still needs to be approved by shareholders once Anthropic completes
- 1:33its IPO, which could come as early as November. Critics say AI
- 1:38companies are using donations and non profit pledges as an attempt to
- 1:41generate goodwill with the public at a time when so many are
- 1:44worried about the potential dangers of the technology and its impact on
- 1:48jobs. However, Anthropic says that as a public benefit corporation, it balances
- 1:54its commercial interests with the interests of them, public good. Anthropic President
- 1:58Daniela Amadei told the Associated Press in a May interview that the
- 2:02company works to make that balance clear. I think there's something really
- 2:06valuable about that. As a construct, just to help investors and employees
- 2:10and outside people understand what our intentions are, and hold us accountable
- 2:14to them, she said. Other public benefit corporations include eyeglass maker Warby
- 2:20Parker, insurance company Lemonade, and Amalgamated Bank. Questioning whether public benefit
- 2:26corporations work for the public Bella Devon, director of the Charity Reform
- 2:31Initiative at the Institute for Policy Studies, said that public benefit corporations
- 2:36can be meaningful, but the federal government doesn't currently properly regulate corporations.
- 2:42Without tax reform and a change in what she calls the public
- 2:46permissiveness toward billionaire power in America, Devon said there is no guarantee
- 2:51that even public benefit corporations will act in the public interest. Their
- 2:56wealth belongs to the public in the first place. It's created by
- 2:59The country, and there's a sort of social wage owed to people
- 3:02who use their products, she said. I hope that when people use
- 3:06the ethos of Silicon Valley that gave birth to these companies, that
- 3:10have grand designs of changing the world, what they'll also think about
- 3:13how philanthropy could actually achieve charitable aims. Kelly said Anthropic's work with
- 3:19the nonprofit sector is part of the company's mission. The bulk of
- 3:23the twenty five thousand nonprofits currently using Claude for nonprofits have less
- 3:27than ten people on staff, so its impact on the organizations is
- 3:31often great. She points to Allies Against Slavery, the Texas based nonprofit
- 3:37fighting human trafficking, as an example of what is possible, after its
- 3:41only government affairs staffer used Claude to analyze more than seven hundred
- 3:45and fifty state level anti trafficking policies and turn them into recommendations
- 3:50for advocates. This is basically compounding good, she said. That's the kind
- 3:55of work that we're so excited to support here at Anthropic. Some
- 3:59nonprofits already find help from using Claude, but Montgomery
- 4:03County Food Bank president and CEO Scott Burns said his organization's use
- 4:07of clod has already generated significant savings that allow it to provide
- 4:12food to more people in his Texas county north of Houston. Costs
- 4:16have gone up for fuel, Byrne said. Costs have gone up in
- 4:19every area for proteins in particular. I still want to be able
- 4:23to do more without adding a bunch of additional resources, and Claude
- 4:26will enable me to do that. The Montgomery County Food Bank is
- 4:30one of the thirty nonprofits that has been working with Anthropic to
- 4:34better customize Claude for its specific needs. Burns said his team has
- 4:38already used it to optimize scheduling for food pickup and delivery and
- 4:42keeping better contact with donors. He is looking forward to welcoming two
- 4:47Claude Corps fellows into the organization soon to tackle its outdated inventory
- 4:51system and them scheduling of its Follitz volunteers. Burns said he is
- 4:55also hoping to share his findings with other food banks. Nonprofits were
- 5:00kind of an open book, he said. Why would I not share?
- 5:03It's only going to help get more people fed, right? Taproot Foundation
- 5:07CEO Kat Ward said her nonprofit is excited about working with Anthropic
- 5:11to provide pro bono expertise to nonprofits for specific projects. Nonprofits are
- 5:17as lean as they come, Ward said. They've got the ambition, they've
- 5:21got the vision. This is about empowering them with tools that'll help
- 5:24them go further faster. Associated Press Coverage of Philanthropy and Nonprofits receives
