- 0:00Speaker 1: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Hands to Hester and Hester. Yep, got it.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Five out of five.
- 0:07Speaker 1: From carrying each other to a natty to carrying each
- 0:11Speaker 1: other on the air.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Flynn is back to throw for the end zone foul.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Live from the Raising Cane Studio. It's Off the Bench.
- 0:48Speaker 3: All right, welcome back in. OTB, hour number three here
- 0:54Speaker 3: on this Tuesday morning. Always want to remind you about
- 0:55Speaker 3: our friends over at Ochsner. Remember, there's multiple locations, obviously,
- 0:59Speaker 3: throughout the state of Louisiana. One of the ones that
- 1:02Speaker 3: we always talk about is the Full Orthopedic Clinic right
- 1:05Speaker 3: there on the campus of Elite Training Academy right off
- 1:08Speaker 3: Burbank in Baton Rouge. And it is a state-of-the-art facility.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And again, when I say Full Orthopedic Clinic, like if
- 1:13Speaker 3: you have a sports injury, you can go there. But
- 1:15Speaker 3: it's also an incredible rehab facility. center as well. They've
- 1:19Speaker 3: got all the bells, all the whistles, all the latest technology.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And again, it's very convenient right in the middle of
- 1:24Speaker 3: Baton Rouge, right there, Burbank and Lee at Elite Training Academy.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Go to Ochsner.org for more information. All right, let's get
- 1:31Speaker 3: to the phone lines now. We have got our guy. Actually, oh,
- 1:34Speaker 3: we do have him on FaceTime. Look at there. Nick Underhill,
- 1:38Speaker 3: New Orleans.football joins us. And Nick, I guess the first
- 1:41Speaker 3: question that I want to ask you is, do we
- 1:45Speaker 3: know what a fumble is and what a fumble is
- 1:47Speaker 3: not yet?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, I'd say a fumble is me and Flynn coordinating outfits.
- 1:51Speaker 5: It looks like I'm missing the white collar.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Look at that. Hey, because Nick, it made me so
- 1:59Speaker 3: mad watching the game. And for that to be the
- 2:01Speaker 3: call and for somebody, Mike Pereira to come on, he's
- 2:04Speaker 3: coming on my NFL show today. And I cannot wait
- 2:06Speaker 3: to grill him about this because like his intent was
- 2:10Speaker 3: to throw it forward. Well, my intent wasn't to fumble.
- 2:12Speaker 3: My intent wasn't to throw an interception. My intent wasn't
- 2:15Speaker 3: to miss my pass protection. But it is what it is.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I was in a situation like this where Phillip threw
- 2:21Speaker 3: me one time a swing pass, and it looked like
- 2:23Speaker 3: a four pass. It hits the ground. They don't blow
- 2:25Speaker 3: the whistle. The Patriots pick it up, and they go
- 2:27Speaker 3: the other way. And we're like, what in the world?
- 2:29Speaker 3: And that's a fumble. They called it a backwards pass.
- 2:32Speaker 3: It doesn't matter where your arm is. It's where the
- 2:35Speaker 3: pass ends up. For the history of football for me,
- 2:39Speaker 3: this is one that's going to be hard for them
- 2:41Speaker 3: to explain to me and for me to be like, okay,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I'm good with what you said.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Well, ask Pierre if New York calls him before they
- 2:47Speaker 2: call the guy on the field with the explanation, or
- 2:49Speaker 2: are they both on the same call?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Is it a group text?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah. I'm going to get after him.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They will grill the officiating decisions. When it's the NFL,
- 3:02Speaker 2: they know the most obscure thing that's never come up,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and they're treating us like idiots.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I can't stand that aspect of it.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I think the network should lose these guys if they
- 3:13Speaker 2: aren't going to just speak their actual mind because If
- 3:15Speaker 2: there's no disagreement with the call ever.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Like, what's happening here?
- 3:19Speaker 2: And it's in everybody's interest to make sure they're all
- 3:22Speaker 2: on lockstep and all selling the product so that, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: the casino ad up in the corner doesn't look too
- 3:27Speaker 2: weird or anything like that.
- 3:28Speaker 4: So, I don't, like, I'm just.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Kind of beyond it. The end zone view of that
- 3:33Speaker 2: thing was disgusting.
- 3:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:38Speaker 2: three decades plus of watching football games and watching fumbles
- 3:41Speaker 2: and knowing what they are and what they aren't. And
- 3:43Speaker 2: then all of a sudden that isn't it. Like, why
- 3:46Speaker 2: have we been debating at the hands going forward forever?
- 3:49Speaker 2: You know, every mistake I've made in my life, my
- 3:52Speaker 2: intent was to do something else, but I made the mistake.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So therefore that's why the word mistake exists. So like
- 3:58Speaker 2: intent doesn't matter on a mistake. If chase young blows
- 4:01Speaker 2: you up and you're trying to throw the ball and
- 4:03Speaker 2: it goes backwards, you shouldn't have tried to throw the ball.
- 4:05Speaker 4: That's a fumble.
- 4:06Speaker 2: That, that is, that is literally what the definition of
- 4:09Speaker 2: the play is to me. I'm sure you can find
- 4:11Speaker 2: some wording and do an interpretation, but like, come on, man.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Like it's an insult to us as, as viewers of
- 4:18Speaker 4: the game.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And like, why is it that every time the saints
- 4:21Speaker 2: play Jared Goff, there's a weird call. And I, I
- 4:24Speaker 2: would probably put money on one of the NFL sponsors partners,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, it go to their.
- 4:30Speaker 4: App or whatever it is.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And this guy will probably get the Superbowl because like,
- 4:33Speaker 2: that seems to be how it works with these officials
- 4:35Speaker 2: when they, They make one of these calls, I end
- 4:37Speaker 2: up there. But, like, miss me with the booth officials. And, like,
- 4:43Speaker 2: just the whole thing just feels insulting as a viewer. And, like,
- 4:47Speaker 2: this isn't a Louisiana thing. Like, you got everybody in, like,
- 4:51Speaker 2: the whole world's, like, talking about this.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Dan Campbell himself was like, yeah, we got one there.
- 4:56Speaker 3: It's absurd.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It's absurd.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And, like, the end zone view, man, the all 22
- 5:01Speaker 2: of it, like, it looks even worse.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Like, it's just, come on, man. Like, what are we
- 5:05Speaker 4: doing here?
- 5:06Speaker 5: Nick, it was like, and y'all already talked about it.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Like they're trying to talk to us like we're idiots
- 5:10Speaker 5: and trying to explain it to us by some letter
- 5:13Speaker 5: of the law that I still don't know if it
- 5:15Speaker 5: exists or how it exists. But I posed this hypothetical
- 5:19Speaker 5: question yesterday that I think like kind of encapsulates like
- 5:23Speaker 5: how idiotic this is. Like, let's just take that exact
- 5:26Speaker 5: same example. Let's put it one yard in front of
- 5:29Speaker 5: the line of scrimmage. Let's just say Jared Goff cross
- 5:31Speaker 5: line of scrimmage. Do they call that? an illegal forward
- 5:35Speaker 5: pass or do they call it a fumble? They would
- 5:37Speaker 5: have to call that an illegal forward pass. I like,
- 5:40Speaker 5: it's the most idiotic rule ruling. And if I'm the NFL,
- 5:45Speaker 5: like I'm sitting there and I'm like, this is a
- 5:48Speaker 5: good opportunity. I think for the NFL to read the
- 5:50Speaker 5: room and probably like gain a little bit of favor
- 5:53Speaker 5: with fans by just admitting that they're like, that was
- 5:56Speaker 5: a mistake.
- 5:56Speaker 3: That's on us.
- 5:57Speaker 5: I'm like just making a simple, like that even have
- 6:00Speaker 5: to be an announcement. It's just like a little press release.
- 6:04Speaker 2: They'll never do that then because all the money they're
- 6:06Speaker 2: making off of gambling, then all those bets got to
- 6:08Speaker 2: be voided or something like it would just create a
- 6:10Speaker 2: massive problem. Like so they like they've almost backed themselves
- 6:14Speaker 2: into a corner where accountability then makes it look like
- 6:16Speaker 2: the fix is in. So they can't actually take accountability
- 6:18Speaker 2: of things or like it's just it's a nasty situation.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I mean, I think when you have like that marriage
- 6:24Speaker 2: of things and you've leaned so far into that direction.
- 6:28Speaker 2: like these calls have to be pristine in the calling.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Shouldn't be like, let's, let's apply something that helps the
- 6:33Speaker 2: team that's favored by seven.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Like, I just don't think that's okay.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And then the other part of it that really bothers
- 6:40Speaker 2: me is that the officiating guy gets like on TV
- 6:43Speaker 2: and like, there's, there has to be some like, man,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I don't know about this.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Like, it just feels like it's all being sold to us.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Like, okay.
- 6:50Speaker 2: They can get a call wrong, but like, in that situation,
- 6:53Speaker 2: there has to be some voice in the room. Like
- 6:55Speaker 2: this is maybe a stretch on how this is being
- 6:57Speaker 2: applied here. Uh, I understand it's written this way, but like, it's,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I don't know if I've ever interpreted it that way.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I've seen a lot go the other way. Like at
- 7:04Speaker 2: least like have the decency to treat us like there's
- 7:07Speaker 2: some intelligence on the other side of the TV where
- 7:11Speaker 2: it's like, Oh no, they're all going to buy this.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Like, just tell them, Hey, come on, man. Like, I
- 7:15Speaker 4: just don't, I don't like how it smells.
- 7:17Speaker 5: I guess kind of a powerful thing to say that
- 7:18Speaker 5: it's like, do you really think that the, gambling partners
- 7:22Speaker 5: where the NFL have something to do? I mean, not
- 7:24Speaker 5: with the call, of course, not with the call, but
- 7:27Speaker 5: with the, I guess the explanation of everything.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And no, I mean, like, I, I think that the
- 7:35Speaker 2: optics of it are real, even if it's not real,
- 7:37Speaker 2: like the optics of it have now become real. Like they,
- 7:39Speaker 2: they've introduced that aspect of it into the game. I mean,
- 7:43Speaker 2: so you can't have the name of the casino on
- 7:45Speaker 2: the building and then not have the casino mentioned when
- 7:47Speaker 2: something weird happens that could affect the outcome of payouts
- 7:51Speaker 2: and everything. So I think when you kind of get
- 7:53Speaker 2: into bed like that, those things kind of do go
- 7:56Speaker 2: hand in hand. But I do think that if you
- 7:58Speaker 2: are making hundreds of millions of dollars off of a
- 8:02Speaker 2: partner and a statement could affect them negatively financially, I
- 8:06Speaker 2: think that would affect how you communicate after the fact
- 8:08Speaker 2: for sure.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Because, okay, we can make this statement.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But now we're going to lose money 600 million dollars
- 8:14Speaker 2: or we're going to cost them money and they're not
- 8:16Speaker 2: going to re-up with us or it's going to cause
- 8:18Speaker 2: problems over here with these people that are that are
- 8:20Speaker 2: paying you know all these salaries and the growth of
- 8:22Speaker 2: the game and you know this is this is probably
- 8:25Speaker 2: the most lucrative partner we have going forward this side
- 8:27Speaker 2: of tv i i definitely think that you have to
- 8:30Speaker 2: have those conversations um you know our show's sponsored by
- 8:35Speaker 2: you know a ton of things if i had a
- 8:37Speaker 2: negative experience at one of those places i'm not i'm
- 8:40Speaker 2: certainly not going to get on a microphone and say
- 8:41Speaker 2: it you know So, yeah, I think those decisions definitely
- 8:45Speaker 2: come into mind.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Catching up with our guy Nick Underhill, New Orleans.football here
- 8:50Speaker 3: on OTB. Nick, I don't want to make it all
- 8:53Speaker 3: about the missed call that they had because I do
- 8:55Speaker 3: want to make it about the fight that the Saints
- 8:57Speaker 3: had in the second half. I thought Tyler Shuck was
- 8:59Speaker 3: the guy that looked like he hadn't played or dressed
- 9:01Speaker 3: in the preseason in the first half. And then he
- 9:03Speaker 3: settled in in the second half. Tyler Shuck, Chris Alave,
- 9:06Speaker 3: they were awesome. There's a lot of great things to
- 9:08Speaker 3: point out. about this team's performance. I love the decision
- 9:11Speaker 3: to go for two. I wish they would have run
- 9:14Speaker 3: something a little bit different, but I get it. You
- 9:18Speaker 3: were cooking. You had your offense going right down the field.
- 9:21Speaker 3: And also, you didn't stop them in overtime either. They
- 9:24Speaker 3: went right down the field. So if you give them
- 9:25Speaker 3: the ball back with a minute and a half left,
- 9:27Speaker 3: they got one of the best kickers in the NFL,
- 9:30Speaker 3: your chances aren't great. But I like going for two.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I like the aggressive nature, and I love the fight.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I know there's no moral victories in the National Football League,
- 9:37Speaker 3: but they showed a lot of fight against a good
- 9:39Speaker 3: team on the road down 21 to nothing. Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 2: So the not go for two thing wasn't even a consideration.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I've been like shocked. I've been shocked by that conversation. Like, Hey,
- 9:49Speaker 2: it's a loser move to play for the time.
- 9:51Speaker 3: No doubt. Like on the road, especially. Yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Like you go in the locker room.
- 9:56Speaker 2: How are you gonna sell that to your play like
- 9:57Speaker 2: i think in week one against that team you have
- 9:59Speaker 2: a chance to win and you play for the tie
- 10:01Speaker 2: and you're like trying to build a culture and everything
- 10:03Speaker 2: it like what do you what do you tell them
- 10:05Speaker 2: the play like i think.
- 10:06Speaker 4: The players would feel so flat after that.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Even worse, like, if you played for the tie, and
- 10:10Speaker 5: then you lose because they kick a field goal.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, like, it's awful. You can't do that. So, yeah,
- 10:16Speaker 2: if it's, like, week 15, and you see the playoff
- 10:19Speaker 2: odds or whatever, and you're like, man, a tie could
- 10:21Speaker 2: really help us win this division, sure. But at this
- 10:23Speaker 2: point in the season, no way you do it. And, yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 2: there's too much time. And in today's NFL, you get
- 10:27Speaker 2: 15 yards, and you're in field goal range. Like, it's just,
- 10:29Speaker 2: it was a weird debate to me overall on that.
- 10:32Speaker 2: As far as the play, like, I feel like, the
- 10:35Speaker 2: back corner option probably should have been Valle. Like the,
- 10:38Speaker 2: the you're screwed bail me out throw should probably be
- 10:41Speaker 2: the guy that makes the, you know, you're screwed.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I'll bail you out catches like that. That should probably
- 10:45Speaker 4: be how it is.
- 10:46Speaker 2: We saw that play in camp when they were fully
- 10:48Speaker 2: healthy and it was Tyson to the pile on Chris
- 10:52Speaker 2: on the hitch and Valle was, was the three where
- 10:54Speaker 2: Bryce Lance was.
- 10:55Speaker 4: And you know, that, that makes sense to me.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I probably would have put Lance at the second read
- 11:00Speaker 2: and Valle at the third just for the, Cause like
- 11:03Speaker 2: read to that guy actually has to be open. Like,
- 11:05Speaker 2: so yeah, I, I kind of, you know, in hindsight,
- 11:08Speaker 2: it's like, ah, why'd you run that? Um, you know,
- 11:10Speaker 2: I like that flood concept. They had that, they ran
- 11:12Speaker 2: a couple of times in short yardage where like Tyler's
- 11:14Speaker 2: on the move and then you kind of got like the,
- 11:16Speaker 2: the late looper going across the back of the, uh,
- 11:18Speaker 2: the end zone from the, from the backside and you
- 11:20Speaker 2: got the flood concept of the right. I would have
- 11:23Speaker 2: maybe liked that. It kind of felt like it was
- 11:24Speaker 2: one option or you're cooked.
- 11:26Speaker 3: That was, to me, it felt like it was one option. Now,
- 11:28Speaker 3: the back was, he would have walked in the end zone,
- 11:30Speaker 3: but you're not ever looking to the back on that.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I mean, he's just, he's there. He's there in name only.
- 11:36Speaker 6: People who say he should have taken the back are idiots.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you never even look over there. Like, it wasn't
- 11:40Speaker 3: even the play design, but for me, if Olave's going
- 11:44Speaker 3: to do that, he's got to threaten that he's going
- 11:46Speaker 3: to run a drag more. If you're going to run that,
- 11:47Speaker 3: you've got to run it like a whip route and
- 11:49Speaker 3: not just a motion directly to the flats. Because as
- 11:52Speaker 3: soon as you do that, you don't threaten the guy
- 11:54Speaker 3: that has you across the formation at all. So for me,
- 11:57Speaker 3: it's not even the play design. But you're right. It's
- 11:59Speaker 3: like one option or none. But if you go.
- 12:02Speaker 6: It wasn't his... He didn't have the right to do that.
- 12:04Speaker 3: No, no, no. That's what I'm saying. It's like... I
- 12:07Speaker 3: meant like them trying to get a lave to the
- 12:09Speaker 3: front pylon. I have no problem with that. But it's
- 12:11Speaker 3: got to be more of a whip route. By that,
- 12:13Speaker 3: I mean sell the drag for two steps and then
- 12:15Speaker 3: immediately come out. Nobody's keeping up with Chris LaVey in
- 12:18Speaker 3: a route like that.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So.
- 12:19Speaker 3: It's not even what they were trying to get done,
- 12:21Speaker 3: but I'd like to see it done a little bit differently.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and we just saw Baylor lose on that throw.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I saw everybody on Twitter being like, oh, if you
- 12:27Speaker 2: would have put it on Chris earlier, no, Chris would
- 12:29Speaker 2: have been stopped short. Chris isn't breaking a tackle and
- 12:32Speaker 2: getting in. We just saw DJ Lagway lose a game
- 12:34Speaker 2: on that same exact route.
- 12:35Speaker 4: It's just not happening.
- 12:37Speaker 6: It's a weak call.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Everybody does it, and it works 50% of the time.
- 12:41Speaker 5: It's a weak call. You are basically... Banking on them,
- 12:44Speaker 5: getting confused by the quick motion, the short motion in
- 12:47Speaker 5: by Olave. You were banking on that and didn't really
- 12:50Speaker 5: have an option afterwards. It was a bad call, and
- 12:51Speaker 5: it wasn't their first call. Detroit took a timeout, and
- 12:54Speaker 5: they burned that play.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But whatever.
- 12:57Speaker 5: But my question is, why does Tyler Shooks stink in
- 13:00Speaker 5: the first half, and is.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Superman in the second half?
- 13:03Speaker 4: It's unbelievable, man.
- 13:04Speaker 6: Objectively, he stunk. And then objectively, he was incredible.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, like, we've seen a version of this
- 13:10Speaker 2: game five different times, and it's not even, like, this
- 13:14Speaker 2: was probably the starkest, like, start to comeback.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Like, it was very, very dramatic.
- 13:19Speaker 2: The first half, if you weren't sitting there asking yourself
- 13:22Speaker 2: questions about, like, what the hell is going on? Are
- 13:24Speaker 2: things okay here? Has something been figured out? You're lying,
- 13:27Speaker 2: because everybody was. Like, that first half was confidence-rattling, like,
- 13:32Speaker 2: from every front, and then he comes back. His like
- 13:35Speaker 2: if you want to get to the nerdy stats here,
- 13:37Speaker 2: like his EPA per drop back in the first and
- 13:39Speaker 2: second quarter or like extremely negative. And then the third quarter,
- 13:43Speaker 2: it's positive. Like it's a trend going throughout all the
- 13:46Speaker 2: games here. You go to Kellen Moore. His history is
- 13:49Speaker 2: a play caller. EPA per play first and second quarter.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Really bad third quarter.
- 13:53Speaker 4: It's good.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So is it a shock thing or is it a
- 13:57Speaker 2: offense thing or is it a little bit of both thing?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Like are both these guys kind of built like that?
- 14:01Speaker 2: I don't know what the answer is. I've been asking
- 14:03Speaker 2: the same question going on, you know, going into a
- 14:06Speaker 2: second season now.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Why can't you guys start faster?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Why can't whatever you're doing in the third quarter happen
- 14:12Speaker 2: after a drive or two in the first quarter? Like,
- 14:14Speaker 2: this can't be a thing where you're giving away half
- 14:17Speaker 2: the game every single time. And, like, my optimistic brain says, yeah, like,
- 14:22Speaker 2: they'll still figure this out. But then the logic is like, geez, like,
- 14:26Speaker 2: you're looking at this. This is an ongoing trend. at
- 14:29Speaker 2: some point I feel like they got to break through
- 14:31Speaker 2: and score on an opening drive. Like it just doesn't
- 14:33Speaker 2: feel like you can keep going like this and that
- 14:35Speaker 2: much firepower. Like it seems like at some point it's
- 14:38Speaker 2: just going to accidentally show up early on and maybe
- 14:40Speaker 2: you figure something out, but it's, it's absolutely a problem.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And I think it's on that, that list of things
- 14:46Speaker 2: that you got to keep an eye.
- 14:47Speaker 4: On going forward.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And you know, after a certain point in time, it's
- 14:50Speaker 2: not like, ah, they'll just, this will fix itself.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Like they have to actually.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Find a fix here because, I don't know what's going
- 14:56Speaker 2: on with it, but it is extremely weird that you
- 14:59Speaker 2: can be that good but start that bad week after
- 15:02Speaker 2: week after week.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Nick, one of the things that was not good for
- 15:06Speaker 3: the game was the right side of your offensive line.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Do you say that's okay, you faced Aiden Hutchinson, and
- 15:12Speaker 3: that's the reason why you were poor? He had two
- 15:14Speaker 3: sacks in the game, but he had a lot of
- 15:16Speaker 3: pressure throughout the game. Or is that continued trouble with
- 15:19Speaker 3: your right side of your offensive line? I mean, obviously,
- 15:21Speaker 3: Cesar Ruiz is somebody we've talked about often here.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, man, going to the other sideline, that
- 15:28Speaker 2: spin move that Hutchinson had on Banks, I don't know
- 15:30Speaker 2: if you guys saw that play.
- 15:33Speaker 3: That's one of those ones you tip your cap.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Yeah, that one was nasty.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You know, I know the stat grading service that everyone uses,
- 15:42Speaker 2: but one of those sacks on Fuego, but it was
- 15:45Speaker 2: like a corner blitz. And I don't think it was
- 15:48Speaker 2: his responsibility.
- 15:49Speaker 3: It wasn't even like, yeah, it wasn't even the sacks.
- 15:50Speaker 3: It was kind of like, I was surprised the push
- 15:52Speaker 3: that they got on his side. Cause typically he anchors
- 15:54Speaker 3: really well.
- 15:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I thought they were just, there's too much investment in
- 15:59Speaker 2: that line overall. Like it's too shaky, regardless of like
- 16:02Speaker 2: what degree of shakiness we're talking about.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Like the, the table shouldn't wobble.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Like you shouldn't have to look at it and like where,
- 16:08Speaker 2: you know, where do I put the sugar packet underneath
- 16:10Speaker 2: here to make this table not wobble? Like you have
- 16:13Speaker 2: way too many first rounders. You have way too much
- 16:15Speaker 2: money invested in David Edwards. Even if you think Caesar's shaky,
- 16:19Speaker 2: you should be able to hide.
- 16:20Speaker 4: A right guard.
- 16:21Speaker 2: That's where you want to hide somebody on your offensive line.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And it just doesn't, it doesn't feel like it's there.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Now they were blitzing a lot in the first half
- 16:30Speaker 2: and they were doing a lot of different stuff. But
- 16:32Speaker 2: you should have expected it too. And going back to,
- 16:34Speaker 2: you know, Matt's question, like, why did they start so well? Like, Yeah,
- 16:37Speaker 2: they were playing more cover four than they.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Did last year.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Like they didn't do any of that last year. They
- 16:40Speaker 2: were marrying cover four to the blitz last year. They
- 16:43Speaker 2: had six reps the whole entire season where they blitzed
- 16:46Speaker 2: out of a cover four. Look, they had six in
- 16:48Speaker 2: the first half this week. So like, yeah, there's little
- 16:50Speaker 2: things to figure out, but also they didn't have either
- 16:52Speaker 2: of their safety. So like, what kind of defense do
- 16:54Speaker 2: you think they're going to play? Like, and how are
- 16:56Speaker 2: they going to hide a weak secondary? Well, they're going
- 16:58Speaker 2: to blitz more. So like the adjustment to that is
- 17:00Speaker 2: really weird to me. And it just felt like they
- 17:02Speaker 2: didn't have the protections to handle a lot of this stuff. Now,
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think one of them was on Tyler for sure.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Like he slid a protection where they had six guys
- 17:09Speaker 2: in protection and then Kendra ends up one-on-one on Aiden Hutchinson.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Like I, you know, that probably shouldn't happen. So like,
- 17:16Speaker 2: I think, I think there's some stuff happening on the field,
- 17:19Speaker 2: but I also think that there's just like a lot of,
- 17:22Speaker 2: at some point, like if this doesn't, again, it's week one,
- 17:26Speaker 2: so I don't want to overreact anything. And you've added
- 17:28Speaker 2: David Edwards, but like we're going back to last year too.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Like at some point, like if the line doesn't become
- 17:33Speaker 2: a strength, I don't think it's the talent you have.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Like I think the talent that you have should be
- 17:38Speaker 2: performing way better than it is here. And it hasn't.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And I was a little disappointed by the run game too.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Like they went more outside zone than inside. We kind
- 17:45Speaker 2: of expected that, but like the commitment to it didn't
- 17:48Speaker 2: make sense. So I just feel like that should be
- 17:52Speaker 2: the strength and identity of the team. And it's not yet. Again,
- 17:56Speaker 2: week one, it should get better. Really tough matchup. I
- 17:59Speaker 2: don't know that we see drastic improvement in week two
- 18:01Speaker 2: against Baltimore, but like, you know, these are things that
- 18:04Speaker 2: should get better throughout the season, but when it hits
- 18:07Speaker 2: kind of some of those spots from last year, I,
- 18:09Speaker 2: you know, I feel like it's on that list of
- 18:10Speaker 2: stuff to keep an eye on.
- 18:12Speaker 3: All right. There he is. Our guy, Nick Underhill, new
- 18:14Speaker 3: Orleans dot football, breaking down the saints loss in Detroit
- 18:18Speaker 3: and real quick, it doesn't get much easier. Nick, the
- 18:21Speaker 3: saints are now going to Baltimore to face the Ravens.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And that's also what makes this game having a chance
- 18:27Speaker 3: to win it in regulation, a chance to win it
- 18:29Speaker 3: at the end of overtime. So heartbreaking to, is because
- 18:32Speaker 3: we knew the schedule was going to Baltimore coming up
- 18:35Speaker 3: this week on the road.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Declan Doyle, OC there, used to be the tight
- 18:39Speaker 2: ends coach here. Kind of crazy to see him. That's
- 18:41Speaker 2: one of those things where you look at the league
- 18:43Speaker 2: and it makes you feel really old.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Yeah, mine's always when guys I've played with are head
- 18:48Speaker 3: coaches or coordinators or something like that.
- 18:50Speaker 6: It's going to be a big win this week. Minor
- 18:52Speaker 6: setback for a major comeback.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Okay, there you go. Nick, we appreciate it as always, sir.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Take it easy, guys.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Oh, a little click. I think we should play the
- 19:04Speaker 3: two-point conversion and kind of just maybe use our fingers.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I don't know where to get the film from that. Well,
- 19:10Speaker 3: I mean, we can get the TV copy. We don't
- 19:11Speaker 3: need a whole lot of. There is something I do
- 19:14Speaker 3: want to do. We need to ask Nicholas where he watches.
- 19:17Speaker 6: There's something I want to do. His NFL tape.
- 19:20Speaker 5: There's a lot of people out there on the interwebs
- 19:23Speaker 5: talking about a receiver for LSU, talking about how he
- 19:26Speaker 5: made a loaf and was lazy on a play. And
- 19:29Speaker 5: I want to defend him a little bit.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Do you do? Sure do. You want to defend a loaf?
- 19:37Speaker 3: I want to defend a player. Oh, okay. We'll do
- 19:40Speaker 3: that when we come back. Sure. OTV?
- 19:44Speaker 4: Off the bench.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn, presented
- 20:13Speaker 1: by Community Steel.
- 20:14Speaker 8: All right, welcome back here, Off the Bench, where we
- 20:33Speaker 8: get this stuff.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Segment started. I want to tell you about our good
- 20:35Speaker 6: friends over at Catalyst.
- 20:36Speaker 5: When you think about Louisiana, you think about energy. And
- 20:39Speaker 5: one company helping shape the future is Catalyst. Catalyst is
- 20:42Speaker 5: developing the Commonwealth LNG Export Facility over there in Cameron Parish,
- 20:45Speaker 5: connecting American natural gas with customers around the world. Now
- 20:49Speaker 5: under construction after reaching its final investment decision in 2026,
- 20:51Speaker 5: the project represents a major investment in Louisiana's future.
- 20:56Speaker 6: But it's about more than just exporting energy.
- 20:57Speaker 5: It's about creating jobs, supporting local businesses, strengthening communities, reinforcing
- 21:01Speaker 5: Louisiana's position as one of the world's leading energy hubs.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Through its natural gas production, Caterus is helping build an
- 21:08Speaker 5: integrated energy platform that connects domestic resources with the growing
- 21:11Speaker 5: global demand. As construction continues across Louisiana's Gulf Coast, Caterus
- 21:15Speaker 5: is proud to invest in American energy, American workers, and
- 21:18Speaker 5: a stronger economic future. Caterus, connecting Louisiana energy to the world.
- 21:24Speaker 3: All right. Welcome back in. A little OTV Tuesday shows
- 21:27Speaker 3: brought to you by our friends at Community Steel, communitysteelco.com,
- 21:30Speaker 3: right there in Gonzales, Louisiana. Go check them out today. Matthew,
- 21:35Speaker 3: you said that you had a player that you wanted
- 21:38Speaker 3: to bring up that was catching some criticism over the
- 21:42Speaker 3: weekend for potentially having a loaf, but you had some
- 21:45Speaker 3: numbers that you wanted to try to defend.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I do. Look, let's call it what it is.
- 21:50Speaker 5: There was a play from Winnie Watkins during the game
- 21:55Speaker 5: that everybody got. Can you pull up my screen? We'll
- 21:58Speaker 5: show the clip. Let me pull up the play first.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 22:02Speaker 5: I was doing a lot of things here. So this
- 22:04Speaker 5: was the last play of a very long drive. This
- 22:08Speaker 5: was a pick six. Obviously, this helped Louisiana Tech stay
- 22:12Speaker 5: in the game. This was one of the more frustrating
- 22:16Speaker 5: plays that LSU had throughout the game because it was
- 22:20Speaker 5: a very good drive.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I mean, 20 plays.
- 22:24Speaker 5: So LSU's going to line up here, and they're going
- 22:27Speaker 5: to do a little short motion, and they are going
- 22:30Speaker 5: to run... And they're playing man to man.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 22:33Speaker 5: So they, uh, they're going to run a corner route
- 22:36Speaker 5: from the inside and then pretty much like a little
- 22:39Speaker 5: arrow route, quick slant underneath type route to the outside.
- 22:44Speaker 5: And it gets beat to the ball, ball tips up.
- 22:47Speaker 3: In the air.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And of course our guy, when are you right here?
- 22:52Speaker 5: It looks like he doesn't really, really know what to do.
- 22:54Speaker 5: He kind of stops and we got a little bit
- 22:57Speaker 5: of a loaf situation, but it's very frustrating because.
- 23:00Speaker 3: We don't know.
- 23:01Speaker 5: His guy certainly makes the pick. Now, a lot of
- 23:04Speaker 5: people said, man, this is clearly a pick play. It
- 23:08Speaker 5: could be a pick play, but he can't pick that guy.
- 23:10Speaker 3: That's illegal.
- 23:11Speaker 5: There is a certain technique that is supposed to be
- 23:13Speaker 5: used for that. And this close to the goal line,
- 23:18Speaker 5: these guys, these zebras are on high alert for it.
- 23:20Speaker 5: I've never seen necessarily a pick play like this. Now,
- 23:24Speaker 5: they probably have a play where he comes down the
- 23:26Speaker 5: line of scrimmage and he goes and picks them. Now,
- 23:27Speaker 5: if this guy is lined up press man on the
- 23:29Speaker 5: line of scrimmage, then he can go. If he's within
- 23:31Speaker 5: a yard of the line of scrimmage, I believe he
- 23:33Speaker 5: can go pick them. Now, this is not necessarily like
- 23:37Speaker 5: I'm familiar with this concept too much, so this could
- 23:40Speaker 5: be a pick play. It looks like he does certainly
- 23:43Speaker 5: get confused.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely think it's not a rub, but definitely a, hey,
- 23:49Speaker 3: get in his way with your body.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Yeah, so this is the play that I'm more... accustomed
- 23:54Speaker 5: to sand.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Well, are you ready for this new tool?
- 23:56Speaker 3: Watch this.
- 23:57Speaker 6: This guy's going to run a corner right here, right?
- 24:00Speaker 4: Yep.
- 24:00Speaker 6: So he's going to go and come underneath right here.
- 24:02Speaker 3: That looks noise. Okay.
- 24:05Speaker 5: This is usually the route that I see is he's
- 24:08Speaker 5: going to come here and then he's going to come
- 24:11Speaker 5: back that direction. That's usually what I see. You give
- 24:14Speaker 5: him presence. Now that is, I think what was probably
- 24:18Speaker 5: supposed to happen. And if it's man to man, usually
- 24:21Speaker 5: a corner routes, kind of what you see, but, um,
- 24:25Speaker 5: This doesn't happen. And look, he looks confused. There's a
- 24:27Speaker 5: lot of communication happening from the sideline too. Three's kind
- 24:31Speaker 5: of telling him he's off the ball. They're communicating a
- 24:34Speaker 5: little bit. Line's communicating a different play. Tekken's a bringing.
- 24:40Speaker 5: He looks up, and I think he gets confused. But
- 24:44Speaker 5: this is where I want to defend him a little
- 24:45Speaker 5: bit because as one individual play, this looks really bad, right?
- 24:51Speaker 5: This looks like you got a player that is loafing,
- 24:54Speaker 5: not giving everything he has to the team. He doesn't
- 24:58Speaker 5: understand his assignment. If you're going to make a mistake,
- 25:00Speaker 5: at least make it full speed. You can say a
- 25:02Speaker 5: lot of different things. But I'm here to defend Mr.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Winnie Watkins.
- 25:05Speaker 5: While this play, by itself, stand alone. And that is
- 25:11Speaker 5: the challenge with Lane Kiffin offense. Picking and choosing individual
- 25:16Speaker 5: plays to... to criticize or to celebrate for the same,
- 25:21Speaker 5: because guys look like they might be loafing here or there.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Can I tell you, this one drive, it was the
- 25:27Speaker 5: 20th play of the drive with no substitutions. Going extremely fast. Taylor,
- 25:33Speaker 5: pull up that graphic, me and my buddy, George Paul
- 25:37Speaker 5: Thomas made.
- 25:40Speaker 3: GBD.
- 25:42Speaker 9: You said that like I was supposed to know.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Who that was. That's George Paul Thomas. All right, Wendy Watkins,
- 25:48Speaker 6: look at this.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Look at this graphic. Are you kidding me? Got Death
- 25:51Speaker 3: Valley in the background and everything.
- 25:52Speaker 5: All right, we got 20 total plays, 13 pass plays,
- 25:56Speaker 5: seven run plays.
- 25:57Speaker 6: You would think, okay, run play, whatever. You know, run play,
- 26:00Speaker 6: he's not really doing anything. Well, guess what?
- 26:02Speaker 5: He's making a sustained block in these run and plays.
- 26:04Speaker 5: So he's making physical contact, which is, you know, you
- 26:09Speaker 5: can train all you want. You can run all you want.
- 26:11Speaker 5: But Jacob, as you know, physical combat with somebody makes
- 26:14Speaker 5: you more tired than anything.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 3: During his total output. I like that he autographed this. Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 3: I sent it to him. He autographed it.
- 26:24Speaker 5: During the play, he had around probably three. It's probably
- 26:26Speaker 5: more than this. I'm just counting in my head when
- 26:29Speaker 5: I'm watching him run routes. Full sprint over 340 yards. Now,
- 26:33Speaker 5: this is all taking place very quickly because they're getting
- 26:35Speaker 5: the line of scrimmage very fast. And he had probably
- 26:38Speaker 5: equal that, maybe a little bit less than that, of
- 26:41Speaker 5: running back to the line of scrimmage. And also, don't
- 26:43Speaker 5: forget motions, things like that. He caught a couple passes,
- 26:48Speaker 5: and he carried the ball on a run as well
- 26:50Speaker 5: during that same drive, and he got tackled pretty hard
- 26:52Speaker 5: three times. A lot of them, like, there are two
- 26:54Speaker 5: of them on the sideline. And, again, there's nothing that
- 26:57Speaker 5: gets you more exhausted than, like, hitting and getting tackled
- 27:00Speaker 5: and having to pick yourself up. And then, oh, yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 5: running back and then doing all different motions and things
- 27:05Speaker 5: like that. He had four times where he had, like,
- 27:07Speaker 5: actually good, hard, sustained blocks. One time he was, like,
- 27:11Speaker 5: a lead blocker for somebody in the C-gap. I was like,
- 27:15Speaker 5: so he's doing a lot. The 20th play of doing
- 27:18Speaker 5: all this, very rapid fire. Just think about it. You're exhausted.
- 27:23Speaker 5: You're tired. It's no excuse for a loaf, but it's
- 27:26Speaker 5: an excuse for probably a mental error. He got a
- 27:30Speaker 5: little bit confused at the play because there's this very
- 27:32Speaker 5: specific and a challenging technique to running around and having to,
- 27:37Speaker 5: quote unquote, pick somebody without picking them, right? You can't
- 27:41Speaker 5: do it because it's illegal. So there's a certain technique.
- 27:43Speaker 5: I think the situation was he was exhausted. He got
- 27:47Speaker 5: a call, and he got a little bit of mental
- 27:49Speaker 5: fog going on, which is probably an excuse because I
- 27:53Speaker 5: can tell you, you watch the whole game tape of
- 27:56Speaker 5: that fellow right there. There ain't a lazy bone in
- 28:00Speaker 5: his body. I watched him play his ass off the
- 28:02Speaker 5: entire time, and it's not going to just show up
- 28:05Speaker 5: on the stats. It's going to show up in his
- 28:08Speaker 5: blocking downfield. His sprinting, how many times was he either
- 28:12Speaker 5: open or running his ass off down the field on
- 28:15Speaker 5: a route or a post route? I think the first play,
- 28:19Speaker 5: they come back after this drive. Now you've got to admit,
- 28:22Speaker 5: they just went 20 plays. They come back, it was
- 28:25Speaker 5: a pick six. So there is no time, maybe two
- 28:28Speaker 5: to four minutes in between that pick six and the
- 28:31Speaker 5: next play. They go two minutes. I think it was
- 28:33Speaker 5: eight or nine straight plays of two minutes where it
- 28:37Speaker 5: was all pass plays. And the first couple were like
- 28:39Speaker 5: 45-yard routes down the field. One of them was a
- 28:43Speaker 5: bad throw by Sam because of bad footwork. And he
- 28:45Speaker 5: had a touchdown. And he dives, hits the ground. He's
- 28:49Speaker 5: got to jog all the way back. And he was
- 28:51Speaker 5: running his tail off the entire time. Second half, same thing.
- 28:55Speaker 3: I'm defending that man.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Can't happen. Mental errors can't happen. But I can understand why.
- 28:59Speaker 5: I'm going to defend him by saying he is not
- 29:02Speaker 5: a lazy player by any means. And I know you've
- 29:05Speaker 5: got to be careful. that one specific play, if you
- 29:08Speaker 5: just take it by itself and encapsulate that one play,
- 29:11Speaker 5: it looks bad, but you got to take everything else
- 29:14Speaker 5: into account. The same way with other players. There's some
- 29:16Speaker 5: plays where trade as runs terrible routes. There's plays where
- 29:20Speaker 5: receivers are getting to the top of the routes and
- 29:22Speaker 5: it looks like they kind of trip and they run
- 29:24Speaker 5: into the defensive back.
- 29:26Speaker 3: I'd sent you that one.
- 29:27Speaker 5: You sent me that one, but then I watched it
- 29:28Speaker 5: again and I was like, my God, this is play 18.
- 29:30Speaker 5: They've already like sprinted for 600 yards without and i
- 29:35Speaker 5: was like why aren't they they got 58 receivers like
- 29:38Speaker 5: maybe you know rotating every now and then i don't
- 29:40Speaker 5: know maybe not mid drives i know you want to
- 29:42Speaker 5: go fast but man these guys are working their tails
- 29:45Speaker 5: off and not everything's going to look crisp and clean
- 29:47Speaker 5: when you get to the middle or back half of
- 29:49Speaker 5: some of these long drives especially if there's a pick
- 29:52Speaker 5: six and there's no time in between.
- 29:53Speaker 3: For a job like that Would you want to see them,
- 29:58Speaker 3: and I know you talked about this yesterday, maybe just
- 30:00Speaker 3: rotate the receivers per series, but if you're on play
- 30:02Speaker 3: number 18, 19, 20, I know they don't want to
- 30:05Speaker 3: sub because then it gives the defense a chance to sub,
- 30:08Speaker 3: get new defensive linemen onto the field. Yeah. But at
- 30:10Speaker 3: that point, do you take a look at it and say, hey,
- 30:13Speaker 3: is the juice worth the squeeze to keep those guys
- 30:15Speaker 3: out there? Do we want to get some fresh legs? Sure.
- 30:18Speaker 3: The D-line's going to be fresh, but we'd rather get
- 30:21Speaker 3: three new receivers in there.
- 30:23Speaker 5: I don't think it's a bad idea. Like I'm not
- 30:25Speaker 5: going to pretend that I'm going to run Wayne's better
- 30:27Speaker 5: off as better than him.
- 30:28Speaker 3: No way.
- 30:28Speaker 5: But like in critical situations, it might seem like a
- 30:32Speaker 5: third down situation or like a third and goal or
- 30:35Speaker 5: third and where, you know, you want to draw up something.
- 30:37Speaker 5: Maybe it's also advantageous to.
- 30:42Speaker 6: Go fast.
- 30:43Speaker 5: I mean, there's, it's probably, they probably believe that it's
- 30:45Speaker 5: more advantageous to go fast than to get the exact
- 30:48Speaker 5: right people.
- 30:49Speaker 6: I would just look at if there is a pick-six
- 30:50Speaker 6: situation like that.
- 30:51Speaker 5: And you know you're about to have to go to
- 30:52Speaker 5: two-minute where they're running routes all the way down the field.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Of course, you want your best players out there. And
- 30:57Speaker 5: when he's earned that right to be one of the
- 30:58Speaker 5: best players at receiver.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:02Speaker 5: But I think you also kind of– I think they
- 31:04Speaker 5: probably learned a lot as a staff and as players
- 31:06Speaker 5: and everything what to expect. But you want your best players,
- 31:09Speaker 5: but also they– The best player running at 75%, it's
- 31:13Speaker 5: not as good as the second best player running 100%.
- 31:15Speaker 3: 100%, yeah.
- 31:16Speaker 6: You know, so it's just.
- 31:17Speaker 5: One of those things where you probably got to feel
- 31:19Speaker 5: out a game, feel out their legs. And I'm sure
- 31:21Speaker 5: when he was like, yeah, I'm good, I'm good, I'm
- 31:23Speaker 5: ready to go. I mean, that dude's in shape. All
- 31:25Speaker 5: those receivers are in great shape, but what can you
- 31:27Speaker 5: do 20 plays in?
- 31:30Speaker 3: It feels like, you know, when you– well, actually, I
- 31:32Speaker 3: don't know because I'm a little bit older. Like when
- 31:35Speaker 3: I was first learning to drive and it was standards.
- 31:39Speaker 3: That's like the first car that I'm learning to drive.
- 31:42Speaker 3: And you don't quite have it yet, and you go
- 31:45Speaker 3: and you press the gas, and you want to go fast,
- 31:47Speaker 3: but then you get– and you just– that's what it
- 31:50Speaker 3: felt like in that play. It looked like he went
- 31:52Speaker 3: to go fast.
- 31:53Speaker 6: And then– He went to go fast.
- 31:54Speaker 3: He went to go put in third.
- 31:55Speaker 5: He's like, wait a minute. I know I can't pick him.
- 31:57Speaker 5: Then he turns around, and he's probably frustrated because he
- 31:59Speaker 5: knew he messed up. But then also he's exhausted mentally
- 32:03Speaker 5: and physically.
- 32:04Speaker 7: It also kind of looked like the guy was out
- 32:06Speaker 7: of his reach by then.
- 32:08Speaker 9: Like, fully.
- 32:09Speaker 6: And I'm not really talking about, like, the effort to
- 32:10Speaker 6: try to catch him.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:12Speaker 6: But the whole thing. That looks bad, but the whole
- 32:14Speaker 6: thing kind of looks.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, it. All right. We got to take
- 32:18Speaker 3: a break.
- 32:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 7: I know.
- 32:19Speaker 3: We'll take a break. More on TV when we come
- 32:21Speaker 3: back here live from the Raising Cane Studio.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Off the bench.
- 32:25Speaker 3: All right. When it comes to your roof, you want

- 32:33Speaker 3: be our friends over at Pelican Roofing. Whether you need

- 32:45Speaker 3: a storm that rolled through. Maybe you don't, though. But
- 32:47Speaker 3: they're going to come out and they're going to tell you, hey,
- 32:49Speaker 3: you're good to go and it cost you nothing. Or
- 32:51Speaker 3: maybe they say, no, we need a small repair. Maybe
- 32:53Speaker 3: it's even more damage than it is at full roof replacement.
- 32:57Speaker 3: But have them come out. Schedule that consultation today. It's

- 33:57Speaker 1: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn, presented
- 34:01Speaker 1: by Community Steel.

- 35:01Speaker 3: Click on that. It's going to give you all the information. Again, palagroup.com.
- 35:10Speaker 3: I will say this about your last segment. I will
- 35:16Speaker 3: say chasing somebody down on a pick six, that's what
- 35:19Speaker 3: got me drafted. Yep. So you got to take those
- 35:22Speaker 3: opportunities when you can. And that guy was a first-round corner,
- 35:26Speaker 3: and he got hawked by a little bow-legged white running back. Stumpy.
- 35:31Speaker 3: But he got hawked. He was probably tired. I don't know.
- 35:36Speaker 3: It was midfield, so it couldn't have been that far
- 35:38Speaker 3: into the drive. Did you ever thank him? Did you
- 35:39Speaker 3: ever send him, like, an edible arrangement or anything?
- 35:42Speaker 8: No.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 35:45Speaker 6: This was Alabama. Was that Javier?
- 35:47Speaker 3: Javier. No, Kareem Jackson.
- 35:50Speaker 6: Oh, Kareem Jackson.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 5: As we all learned, it was the last time an
- 35:53Speaker 5: LSU quarterback threw three interceptions in the same quarter.
- 35:56Speaker 9: Wait, who was that?
- 35:57Speaker 3: This guy. This guy. Right there. Self-awareness. Hey.
- 36:01Speaker 6: Oh, that was loud. Matt, LSU is 2-0 when they
- 36:04Speaker 6: do that.
- 36:04Speaker 3: 2-0, that's right.
- 36:07Speaker 6: We should do it more often. It's always the second quarter, too.
- 36:11Speaker 3: It's true. Just like Sam. Witness fault. God, they had
- 36:14Speaker 3: three interceptions. I can't wait for later. In the second quarter.
- 36:17Speaker 9: Hire me as a signal caller.
- 36:18Speaker 3: And they had a punt return for a touchdown. Javier
- 36:20Speaker 3: Arena said, and they still lost. Yeah, I know. You suck.
- 36:24Speaker 3: You suck. Sorry.
- 36:28Speaker 4: Anyways.
- 36:28Speaker 6: You got to be real gritty to come back from that.
- 36:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 9: Okay, so the signal callers, right? Behind them, there's like
- 36:36Speaker 9: these big LSU. Have you seen them? They're like LSU
- 36:39Speaker 9: flags kind of.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 36:41Speaker 9: It's hiding it.
- 36:42Speaker 3: To hide it from the coach's booth.
- 36:44Speaker 9: Oh, okay, okay. Because I was like. The people across,
- 36:48Speaker 9: that's what I assumed at first.
- 36:50Speaker 5: That's where the real talent shows itself, is when you
- 36:52Speaker 5: can do it from the sideline. Anybody can get a
- 36:54Speaker 5: pair of binoculars, and anybody can do that. The real
- 36:57Speaker 5: talent really shows itself.
- 36:59Speaker 3: To Alonja's point, though, and I think what she's getting at,
- 37:02Speaker 3: is you can see them clearly across the field.
- 37:04Speaker 9: From across the sideline, yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 7: So the other sideline could still.
- 37:09Speaker 3: I would actually think you could see them better from
- 37:11Speaker 3: across the sideline than up in the booth.
- 37:15Speaker 7: I assume that it was for hiding the signals, but
- 37:21Speaker 7: I still felt the sideline.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Because you've heard Matt say that he's been on the sideline.
- 37:25Speaker 9: He's been stealing them from the sideline.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Matt's been a thief for years.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Matt.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Yes.
- 37:30Speaker 6: You have a rebuttal. When it comes to signal stealing, accurate.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Hands up. Got me red-handed.
- 37:40Speaker 9: He was Connor Stallions before Connor Stallions.
- 37:43Speaker 6: There's not a signal safe out there when I'm around.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Let me tell you that. I'll rip them so fast,
- 37:49Speaker 3: make your head spin.
- 37:51Speaker 5: Now, what I do with that information depends on how
- 37:54Speaker 5: you treat me.
- 37:57Speaker 3: Treat me nice, I'll give it to you.
- 37:58Speaker 9: They have three, so one's a decoy.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Seattle, you don't treat me nice. You'll never know I
- 38:02Speaker 3: got them. Or maybe two or three points? I'm not
- 38:07Speaker 3: giving you anything. Until it's too late. Until it's too late, pal.
- 38:14Speaker 3: And also, you could be signaling so many different things, and, like,
- 38:21Speaker 3: one person is actually live, and that person changes. And so, like,
- 38:24Speaker 3: you've got to know who to read and who to–
- 38:26Speaker 3: and also with the communication now on the helmet, too.
- 38:28Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker 3: That changes the game.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Do y'all do, like– third base coaches where like something
- 38:34Speaker 7: is the indicator, the indicator, like, yeah, it makes it
- 38:37Speaker 7: like my coach would always go across the belt. And
- 38:40Speaker 7: after the belt, that's when you would pay attention to
- 38:42Speaker 7: what she was doing.
- 38:43Speaker 9: Cause that's when, but.
- 38:45Speaker 3: There's different forms of that. There's different forms of that.
- 38:47Speaker 5: A lot of times coaches are signaling to a defensive
- 38:50Speaker 5: back and they're not paying attention to them, but they
- 38:53Speaker 5: know on a certain call, they got to look at
- 38:55Speaker 5: the sideline. Most calls they don't. And it comes from
- 38:58Speaker 5: a lot of different people. And then there's certain calls
- 39:00Speaker 5: where depending on, so like, You get one defensive call.
- 39:03Speaker 5: If they come out in three by one, you're going
- 39:05Speaker 5: to run some sort of 33 buzz situation where it's
- 39:08Speaker 5: cover three, but the safety goes inside the nickel. Now,
- 39:10Speaker 5: if they come out in two by two, you might
- 39:12Speaker 5: go quarter, quarter, half. A lot of times, it's up
- 39:15Speaker 5: to the defensive backs what they're running based on the look.
- 39:18Speaker 5: A defensive coordinator could call that offensive two times in
- 39:22Speaker 5: a row, and it might look two different ways. So
- 39:23Speaker 5: you've got to kind of in Kansas city back in
- 39:26Speaker 5: the day, they used to their defensive backs, each side,
- 39:30Speaker 5: they would run too high safety, but their defensive backs
- 39:34Speaker 5: on each side could choose themselves, whether they wanted to
- 39:38Speaker 5: run quarters or they wanted to run cover two on
- 39:40Speaker 5: that side. So they would kind of choose their coverage,
- 39:42Speaker 5: which was there. They were a little bit different than
- 39:44Speaker 5: a lot of people. So they, they could make up
- 39:46Speaker 5: their mind in the snap.
- 39:47Speaker 3: It wasn't called.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 39:50Speaker 3: Interesting. So they were always signaling to each other. It
- 39:55Speaker 3: is very hard to signal whenever you, like on offense,
- 39:57Speaker 3: when you have a lot of shifts, a lot of
- 39:58Speaker 3: motions and different things too. Like a lot of ones
- 40:00Speaker 3: that really count on the signals are the ones that
- 40:02Speaker 3: are just going to kind of line up and run
- 40:04Speaker 3: who they are. Yeah. It's tough to do motions and
- 40:08Speaker 3: any kind of like, so with Norv, like we used to,
- 40:10Speaker 3: we never like started in what we were going to run.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Like we were going to shift to it or we
- 40:15Speaker 3: were going to motion to it. And that was all like,
- 40:17Speaker 3: I would line up a receiver all the time and
- 40:18Speaker 3: then motion into the backfield and just because he wanted
- 40:21Speaker 3: to get an idea of what it was. You've got
- 40:23Speaker 3: to have both.
- 40:24Speaker 5: You've got to line up and run it, and then
- 40:25Speaker 5: you've got to have a lot of the shifts and
- 40:26Speaker 5: the motions because if you line up and run it,
- 40:29Speaker 5: then you have to show everything quick. If you just
- 40:33Speaker 5: shift in motion every time, you don't show it immediately.
- 40:35Speaker 5: So you've got to do a little bit of both,
- 40:37Speaker 5: kind of like playing poker. You've got to bluff, and
- 40:39Speaker 5: you've got to play strong when you are strong.
- 40:43Speaker 3: On that note, we'll take our last break. It's a
- 40:44Speaker 3: show called Ask the Bench, brought to you by DevSec.
- 40:47Speaker 3: He's when we come back.

- 41:58Speaker 1: Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn, presented
- 42:01Speaker 1: by Community Steel.
- 42:16Speaker 3: All right, welcome back in. One final segment here. A
- 42:18Speaker 3: little Ask the Bench brought to you by Ice Cold
- 42:20Speaker 3: Dos Equis. It's always a great time to go for dos.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I believe we have an audio message that we want
- 42:28Speaker 3: to play here. Did we screen this?
- 42:31Speaker 9: I didn't screen it. I listened to some of it.
- 42:33Speaker 9: I listened to like the last 10 seconds.
- 42:35Speaker 7: Who cares?
- 42:35Speaker 3: We'll just cut it if it cusses.
- 42:38Speaker 10: If the rule applies the way that Mike Pereira explained
- 42:41Speaker 10: it in regards to the Jared Goff fumble. Why doesn't
- 42:45Speaker 10: a quarterback who's about to get sacked just pull his
- 42:48Speaker 10: arm back, take the hit, lose the ball, caught an
- 42:54Speaker 10: incomplete pass as opposed to a sack.
- 42:56Speaker 4: And lose 10 yards, 15 yards?
- 42:59Speaker 10: Because if he pulls his arm back and intends to
- 43:02Speaker 10: throw the football, take the hit, lose the ball, and
- 43:06Speaker 10: it's an incomplete pass.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 43:10Speaker 3: I know what he's trying to say, but I'll tell you.
- 43:12Speaker 3: I'll throw this one to you because he's saying like, Hey,
- 43:15Speaker 3: you're about to get hit. You got a guy around
- 43:16Speaker 3: your waist and you just have your arm and then
- 43:18Speaker 3: you act like, Oh man, he, he spun me out
- 43:20Speaker 3: and he just throw it into the ground real quick.
- 43:22Speaker 3: That's a lot of heavy lifting in the moment to
- 43:24Speaker 3: be able to do that mentally. Yeah. Just think about like,
- 43:27Speaker 3: if it was an incomplete four pass, wouldn't it be
- 43:29Speaker 3: intentional grounding? I think he's saying, like, if you do
- 43:32Speaker 3: like this.
- 43:33Speaker 6: I'm just saying, like, that example. I think it's not
- 43:35Speaker 6: a fumble.
- 43:36Speaker 3: It should be, but he's, like, saying if the guy's, like,
- 43:38Speaker 3: around your hip and you almost, like, overreact and be like, oh,
- 43:41Speaker 3: my gosh, he's spitting me all the way around. You
- 43:43Speaker 3: just throw the ball into the ground. That's what I
- 43:45Speaker 3: took from it. I'll just take it. It's just a
- 43:47Speaker 3: real stupid explanation and stupid call. Yeah, I mean, I'm
- 43:52Speaker 3: just definitely. Fascinating.
- 43:54Speaker 6: Nick's taking the whole gambling situation, too.
- 43:56Speaker 3: It is fascinating.
- 43:57Speaker 6: I don't think you would void a bet, though, if
- 43:59Speaker 6: you just say it was a bad call.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Because baseball has bad calls all the time. A lot
- 44:02Speaker 3: of sportsbooks would honor that, honestly. The outcome doesn't change.
- 44:07Speaker 3: I'm going to ask for a little bit later on today.
- 44:08Speaker 3: I'm just going to be like, but we're not supposed
- 44:11Speaker 3: to be able to flag intent. Intent is supposed to
- 44:17Speaker 3: be to the letter of the law. When they brought
- 44:20Speaker 3: intent into it, that's where they messed up. That word
- 44:23Speaker 3: always works really well.
- 44:24Speaker 6: It worked really well with Targeting.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Right. Yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 5: That's a great way to put it in rules.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Dan Campbell is the head coach and he came out
- 44:36Speaker 3: and said, we got one. And that's, that's one of
- 44:39Speaker 3: the reasons I love Dan. Dan's not going to sugarcoat it.
- 44:41Speaker 3: They got one. It happens. And you just say NFL, man,
- 44:45Speaker 3: we messed up. Hold yourself accountable. Say, we'll be better.
- 44:50Speaker 3: This happens in other sports. The Premier League, they messed
- 44:54Speaker 3: up something over the weekend. And before everybody woke up
- 44:58Speaker 3: the next morning, they had a full statement saying, we
- 45:00Speaker 3: messed up. Barr messed up this decision. That's on us.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Pat your chest one time. Yeah.
- 45:06Speaker 5: And it doesn't change an outcome for, like, the gambling partners.
- 45:09Speaker 5: It doesn't change the outcome. So you can't, like, reverse anything.
- 45:12Speaker 5: It's just a bad call.
