- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:1912 and we're going to do the whole chapter today and it's all
- 0:23of 6 verses. So looking forward to this time
- 0:26together, Isaiah chapter 12 and verse #1 we are jumping back
- 0:32into as Isaiah prophecies that just as Israel and Judah had
- 0:38initially been brought from Babylon to the land of Promise
- 0:43and then from Egypt in the Exodus back to the land of
- 0:48promise. That though they would be
- 0:51displaced by Assyria and eventually Babylon and spend
- 0:56those 70 years in exile. God would bring them back in
- 1:00another exodus in which the Messiah would be the one that
- 1:04would lead them in the right way.
- 1:07This root of Jesse, the the branch from the line of Jesse
- 1:12that that line of King David and there would be wonderful joy in
- 1:17the land. That's kind of the circumstances
- 1:19that we've been looking at. And this is where we find
- 1:22ourselves now in chapter 12 and verse one.
- 1:25On that day, that day of restoration, you will say, I
- 1:29will give thanks to you, Yahweh, although you were angry with me,
- 1:34your anger has turned away and you have comforted me.
- 1:38Indeed, God is my salvation. I will trust in Him and not be
- 1:43afraid for Yahweh. Yahweh Himself is my strength
- 1:47and my song. He has become my salvation.
- 1:52You will joyfully draw water from the springs of salvation,
- 1:55and on that day you will say, Give thanks to Yahweh.
- 1:59Proclaim His name, make His works known among the peoples.
- 2:03Declare that His name is exalted.
- 2:06Sing to Yahweh, for He has done glorious things.
- 2:09Let this be known throughout the earth.
- 2:12Cry out and sing Citizen of Zion, for the Holy One of Israel
- 2:17is among you in His greatness. So here it's just a short kind
- 2:23of song of praise. And I want to highlight two
- 2:26things real quick. I know absolutely that Psalm 96
- 2:30is in view here, and that's starting in verse #4 that Isaiah
- 2:37begins quoting that. You can read that in Psalm 96,
- 2:41verses one through 3. Sing a new song to Yahweh.
- 2:44Let the whole earth sing to Yahweh.
- 2:45Sing to Yahweh, bless His name, proclaim His salvation from
- 2:49day-to-day, declare His glory among the nation's, His wondrous
- 2:53works among all peoples. And then I believe that he's
- 2:56also referencing here Psalm 18. Yeah, right about there, that
- 3:03God has become my salvation, the one that I have turned to.
- 3:10Yeah. So all through Isaiah 12, it is
- 3:15not simply that. Isaiah is, if you will, I'll use
- 3:20it. I'll use this phrase.
- 3:21This is not a a necessarily the best way to phrase it.
- 3:24He's not just hallucinating visions of the future.
- 3:28Isaiah is meditating, contemplating on the word of God
- 3:33in the past. So I already talked about
- 3:35Exodus. We've talked at various points
- 3:38in Isaiah 1 through 11 already that Isaiah draws in pictures
- 3:43from the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve, eating of the good
- 3:47fruit. And when you eat the good fruit,
- 3:50you live. When you eat the bad fruit, you
- 3:52die. We talked about that a couple of
- 3:54times here going through the Psalms as he's talked about the
- 3:59one from the line of David that we would read about in Second
- 4:02Samuel 7. Even the prophet Isaiah, when
- 4:07the biblical prophets are, if you will, doing prophecy, there
- 4:11are things that God himself shows them from time to time.
- 4:16But the majority of the work that they are doing is knowing
- 4:19what God has already done and already said and then applying
- 4:24that into the future to say God is faithful to his promises.
- 4:28Therefore, if he said Israel, as they reject the Lord, will go
- 4:34back to the nation of Babylon that they were sent out from
- 4:37initially with Abraham, then God will be faithful to His promise.
- 4:41If God promised that David would always have a descendant sitting
- 4:45on the throne, or David would have a descendant sitting on the
- 4:49throne forever, rather, then God will be faithful to that
- 4:53promise. And if it's going to be forever,
- 4:57we've seen the regular line of David and we even saw David
- 5:01himself in in murder and adultery, the sin that he
- 5:05committed of having a census of the people in order to like
- 5:11establish military might in direct defiance of what the law
- 5:16of God said. So when you look at David and
- 5:20all of his line, you'd go, well, there's no way that God is going
- 5:23to allow this evil to continue forever.
- 5:26And so based on the word of God and the sign that God himself
- 5:30gave, that there would be a manual God with us, that somehow
- 5:37God would become the Son of David and even David in Psalm
- 5:42110 prophecies about that particular thing, that there
- 5:46would be this Messiah, the seed of the woman that was promised,
- 5:49and this one that is even a seed from the line of Jesse and David
- 5:55like it. It's so cool.
- 5:56The Bible all fits together and I I love.
- 6:00I've mentioned here many times the Bible project that the Bible
- 6:04is 1 unified story that leads to Jesus.
- 6:09And on every single page of scripture you can see Jesus
- 6:12either things that are directly pointing to Jesus as the
- 6:16Messiah, as God. Especially in the New Testament
- 6:21you can see what Jesus character is like.
- 6:25As you see the character of God himself in the Old Testament,
- 6:28you can see the things that Jesus would not do, and that
- 6:33thereby informs you about his character as you look at his
- 6:37family in the Old Testament and you go, yeah, Jesus is part of
- 6:41this family, but he doesn't behave in all the ways that they
- 6:43behaved. And he won the battles that his
- 6:47ancestors lost over and over and over again.
- 6:51And so it gives us confidence in Jesus.
- 6:54It means that every time that I read my Bible, I am on a
- 6:58treasure hunt for the King of kings and for the Lord of Lords.
- 7:02I want to find Jesus within the pages Scripture.
- 7:07One of the reasons that I love the Bible project so much is it
- 7:11incessantly draws that line from here's what the passage says,
- 7:16here's the truth that it's communicating and here's how
- 7:19this points us to Jesus. And that is a wonderful mindset
- 7:23to go through. If you're doing like the Bible
- 7:26in a year reading or something like that, that can be really,
- 7:29really helpful, especially as you go through some portions of
- 7:31the Old Testament law as you go through as we are here, the
- 7:35prophets. If you're looking for Jesus, it
- 7:38will make these things come alive.
- 7:40Now you do got to know some of those interconnections and
- 7:43that's why here on Tabernacle talk I spend time trying to
- 7:46highlight here's all of these things being tied together so
- 7:50that you can rejoice with me and man.
- 7:54We can see Jesus in this passage.
- 7:57So Isaiah here is walking through some of the Psalms to
- 8:03rejoice in this future that God has already promised through
- 8:09here, through songs, through praise inspired by the Holy
- 8:13Spirit given to God. And I want to take just a moment
- 8:17and, and walk through these and if you will praise with Isaiah
- 8:22and with the psalmist and with you all this God who is worthy
- 8:26says, I'll give thanks to you, Yahweh.
- 8:28Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and
- 8:32you have comforted me. God's anger towards us is never,
- 8:38if you will, it's never everlasting for the child of
- 8:41God, because as his anger turns towards us, it is to, if you
- 8:46will, rid us of sin in our life so that we would forsake sin,
- 8:52forsake evil, which is what kills us.
- 8:55And instead we turn to God's way, which is the way of life.
- 8:57And there is no anger of God in that way of life.
- 9:02As we walk with him, there's no residual anger.
- 9:05And so the anger of God aimed at sin is turned away.
- 9:09As we recognize our evil in the sight of God, we repent and we
- 9:13walk his way instead. And not only is it that God's
- 9:19anger is no longer honest, but I love there at the end of verse
- 9:21one that it says and you have comforted me.
- 9:23Your anger is turned away and you have comforted me.
- 9:27There's no comfort like the comfort of God.
- 9:29I know in my life there have been times where I had regrets
- 9:33and I had sadness and places like Ephesians one super
- 9:38comforted my heart to know here's who I am in Jesus.
- 9:42Here's what God thinks about me. Here's the value that God puts
- 9:45on my life, not as a result of how perfect I am, but as a
- 9:49result of how perfect Jesus was and because Jesus bought me and
- 9:53I believe in Jesus, that way I can experience the comfort and
- 9:58the joy and the value of God. Verse #2 it says indeed God is
- 10:03my salvation. I will trust Him and not be
- 10:06afraid for Yahweh. Yahweh Himself is my strength
- 10:11and my song. He has become my salvation.
- 10:15The antidote to fear in my life and in your life here is God
- 10:20Himself. It is a trust in His goodness
- 10:23that though not all circumstances are good, God will
- 10:26work all things together for good for those who love Him and
- 10:30who are the called according to His purpose.
- 10:33And so I need to in my life because I don't know if I've
- 10:36mentioned it much on here with you guys.
- 10:39I tend to be a very anxious person as I think about my life,
- 10:42even over, you know, the past couple of weeks there have been
- 10:45different like maintenance things that I wouldn't know
- 10:48personally how to fix. And like I had some mice and
- 10:54chew through a couple of wires on my car.
- 10:58And so how to go get that taken care of.
- 11:01But it was just a very scary situation that I didn't know
- 11:05what the solution would be, but I needed to trust God and say
- 11:09God, I believe that you will take care of me.
- 11:12Or even over this past weekend, my fridge started making some
- 11:20not great noises. And so I'm going to have to get
- 11:22that checked out. But in those moments, I can
- 11:25either choose despair and fear and panic, or I can say God has
- 11:31a plan and God will make all things right in my life and so I
- 11:36can trust in God and not be afraid.
- 11:38I can either say this thing is going to get me or God is going
- 11:43to get me. And I want to have more
- 11:45confidence in my God's ability to rescue than in this broken
- 11:50world's ability to destroy me or to kill me or to strip me of
- 11:57everything that is good in life. I want to believe in my Lord who
- 12:01can sustain me. And then I love how he describes
- 12:04Yahweh. He says he's my strength when
- 12:06when I have no strength, when I don't have enough power of will
- 12:10to, to go through sick situations, Yahweh is my
- 12:16strength. I can say, yeah, I can't handle
- 12:18this. I firmly believe that God can
- 12:21handle this and he is the one that I'm relying on, not on my
- 12:24own will, not on my own bank account, not on my own ability
- 12:28to problem solve. I am relying on God.
- 12:32And God may use my bank account or my will or something to, to
- 12:37accomplish some things, but my, my trust has to be he will make
- 12:42a way when there seems to be no way.
- 12:44And I love that it says Yahweh is my song.
- 12:47He is the one that I am consistently praising.
- 12:52And for people to know me like what's my song?
- 12:56What what's the theme song of Brian's life?
- 12:59My firm prayer is that my song would be God.
- 13:04It would be Jesus over and over again that He is faithful and He
- 13:08is the one to be adored. Verse #3 Isaiah says you will
- 13:11joyfully draw water from the springs of salvation.
- 13:15This is what Jesus was telling the woman at the well in John
- 13:18four said, ask of me and I would give you living water, this
- 13:23water of salvation that is brought from that wellspring of
- 13:28life, who is our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:31And if you need salvation, if you need forgiveness for your
- 13:35sins, you can go to Jesus and you can find full salvation.
- 13:40And on that day, that day of salvation, we will say, give
- 13:43thanks to Yahweh, proclaim His name, make His works known among
- 13:47the peoples, declare that His name is exalted.
- 13:52God is always worthy of the attention, worship, praise,
- 13:57bragging that we can put on him. So do that.
- 14:01Do that in your life. Do that with your family.
- 14:04Do it with those that you're having conversations with.
- 14:06Brag on the God who loves you, who has given you salvation, who
- 14:10has given you everything in your life, who has given you an
- 14:13eternal home with Him. You can brag on God.
- 14:16You can tell other people about what God has done for you and in
- 14:21you and through you. That would be a good thing to
- 14:24do. Verse #5 Sing to Yahweh, for
- 14:26He's done glorious things. Let this be known throughout the
- 14:30earth. Said 1000 times.
- 14:32I'll say it again, sing. Sing because God is worthy.
- 14:35Don't sing because you have a great voice.
- 14:37Don't sing because perhaps whatever song they're singing on
- 14:41Sunday is your favorite song. Sing because God commands it of
- 14:45you. Sing to the Lord.
- 14:47Verse number six, cry out and sing.
- 14:49Citizen of Zion. That is a one who belongs to the
- 14:53Kingdom of God, for the Holy One of Israel is among you in his
- 14:59greatness. And certainly we can think of
- 15:02God's own presence with us right now and the person of the Holy
- 15:05Spirit that God himself lives inside of me and in you, if you
- 15:09have professed your faith in Christ.
- 15:11And what a joy that that is. God's presence in my life
- 15:15demands that I sing. And one day we will get to sing
- 15:20in the presence of Jesus himself, bodily, this God who
- 15:25became man for us, not losing any of his deity, but taking on
- 15:31to his deity humanity as well. And on that wonderful day, what
- 15:35will it be like to hear the songs?
- 15:38The praises of God come from the mouth of the Infinite Incarnate,
- 15:44Eternal Word from the beginning. I'm looking forward to that day,
- 15:49man. And hopefully, maybe even by the
- 15:52time that this episode airs, Jesus will have come back.
- 15:56But I want to encourage you, if you don't yet know Jesus as your
- 15:59Savior, make that choice today. The Bible says whosoever shall
- 16:03call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 16:06For with the heart man believeth, resulting in
- 16:10righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made to
- 16:13salvation. So if we confess with our mouth
- 16:15that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God has
- 16:18raised him from the dead, we will be saved.
- 16:21And that's the word of the Lord. So thanks for tuning in today.
- 16:24We'll pick up next episode in Isaiah 13.
