- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything presented by on X. Hunt creators are the
- 0:22Speaker 1: most comprehensive digital mapping system for hunters. Download the Hunt
- 0:26Speaker 1: app from the iTunes or Google play store. Nor where
- 0:29Speaker 1: you stand with on X. All right, we're here, joined
- 0:38Speaker 1: in part by um Kurt. Was it harder than woodpecker lips?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Or tougher than woodpecker lips? Roscoe? Harder? Harder than Kurt,
- 0:46Speaker 1: harder than woodpecker lips? Roscoe? Out of Bozeman, Montain? Did
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know that that was your that's a guy wrote
- 0:53Speaker 1: in I remember you mentioned in that last time harder
- 0:56Speaker 1: than woodpecker lips. I don't think we had the saying
- 0:59Speaker 1: right at that point, though. You gotta trademark that. Yeah,
- 1:03Speaker 1: and I know now that you have. I've witnessed it now.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You're very you're monastic, um your sort of monastic food regimen. Yes,
- 1:17Speaker 1: it's pretty simple. I don't view it as simple. I
- 1:21Speaker 1: will see now I'd call it hardcore. Oh, it's totally hardcore.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's harder than a woodpecker's lips. Everything, everything about Kurt's
- 1:32Speaker 1: ship is so dialed. Yeah, I've just taken notes all week.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I felt like my I was just a hot mess
- 1:39Speaker 1: compared to Yeah. Just everything is his pack, his food's
- 1:44Speaker 1: a funny he's like his clothing system. Everything. Guy just
- 1:49Speaker 1: so fucking dial anytime I was drinking hot liquids, I
- 1:52Speaker 1: was like, God, I'm weak. Yeah Kurts from Kurts a
- 1:58Speaker 1: designer at Stone Glacier and like a founder at Stone Glacier. Yep. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 1: started in two thousand twelve, bought a Sola machine bot
- 2:08Speaker 1: asan machine ah years before that and like a little
- 2:11Speaker 1: old lady sewing away. Yeah. Uh. Curtis explained as before
- 2:16Speaker 1: is that you would modify your backpack so much that
- 2:21Speaker 1: you'd eventually wind up was sort of a different backpack.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Well that's really how it all started. Um, and uh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: it took a while. It took probably a couple of years,
- 2:32Speaker 1: but yeah, you keep tweaking on little things. Started with
- 2:35Speaker 1: the bags and started with the frame, and at the
- 2:38Speaker 1: end of it you end up something completely new. So
- 2:42Speaker 1: that that was really where the whole company started. I
- 2:46Speaker 1: want to detail his monastic food regimen. And it made
- 2:50Speaker 1: sense this trip because Kurt Ford goes see. Here's where
- 2:56Speaker 1: it gets a little bit like, this is where I
- 2:59Speaker 1: kind of got thrown off. I was telling the boys
- 3:01Speaker 1: last night, if I could, that's gonna sound it's gonna
- 3:04Speaker 1: make you uncomfortable. Kurt's comment, it's a compliment, but it
- 3:10Speaker 1: might make you feel uncomfortable. I was saying, if I
- 3:13Speaker 1: could vacate my brain for a while and go live
- 3:17Speaker 1: in a different brain, I'd probably like, I'd probably go
- 3:22Speaker 1: live in yours for a little while, like, and there's
- 3:25Speaker 1: not there's very very few people I would say. This's
- 3:28Speaker 1: about like if I could go occupy, like I would
- 3:31Speaker 1: live in my same house, family, like, same all stuff,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but just have like be in your brain for a
- 3:38Speaker 1: little while and be that um that Here's what I'm
- 3:45Speaker 1: trying to say to honors. Here's what I understand. You
- 3:48Speaker 1: don't like to when you're out. You drink coffee at home, Yeah,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but you won't drink coffee out hunting because it's too inconvenient. Uh.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And so you wake up and just energy bars and
- 4:01Speaker 1: instead of coffee, you take a coffee a caffeine goo yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and then you're out the door, yeah, of the tent. Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 1: But even in a situation where we had warm breakfast
- 4:14Speaker 1: and had coffee and you didn't have to make it
- 4:17Speaker 1: and it was there anyway, and it was just there.
- 4:21Speaker 1: You still wouldn't eat it, Like, why, what are you
- 4:24Speaker 1: trying to prove a point? No, No, I'm just h
- 4:30Speaker 1: and a lot of the things I do in life,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and hunting being one of them, I just kind of
- 4:35Speaker 1: get dialed in on my system. And and so when
- 4:40Speaker 1: I wake up in the morning part of this, I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: really hungry. So the first thing I'll do is roll
- 4:46Speaker 1: out of my bag and grab a bar to eat.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And then when I'm getting all my stuff packed and
- 4:52Speaker 1: getting dressed, so you're eating in your bag when I'm
- 4:56Speaker 1: starting to climb out. Yeah, so by the time I
- 5:00Speaker 1: have my boots on, my gators on, I'm gone. So
- 5:03Speaker 1: there's no cooking. It's uh, it's just kind of trying
- 5:08Speaker 1: to be efficient and not haven't get up earlier just
- 5:12Speaker 1: so that you can make coffee. That doesn't I'd rather
- 5:15Speaker 1: lay in my bed or in my bag and get
- 5:18Speaker 1: more sleep and be warm. But what was going on
- 5:21Speaker 1: when you, um, you wouldn't even you snubbed our campfire.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I didn't know it snubbed your campfire? Do you know that.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys knows Kurt wouldn't go
- 5:33Speaker 1: buy the campire. I didn't notice that. I didn't notice
- 5:37Speaker 1: that we were there, stood off in the distance. Fire.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You didn't want to be correct? Yeah, the fires too heatonistic.
- 5:44Speaker 1: He didn't want to be He's like, I don't want
- 5:47Speaker 1: to become soft by going by no campfire. That second night,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you were the last one by the campfire. Yeah. Maybe
- 5:56Speaker 1: he just didn't want holes in his gear. I want
- 6:01Speaker 1: to have a ton of spark holes. Uh, we're gonna
- 6:06Speaker 1: we'll get back to that. We'll get back some of
- 6:08Speaker 1: that stuff I want to I want to cover off
- 6:10Speaker 1: on a couple of things. Um, you'll appreciate this stuff.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Remember how we were just hunting in June, we hunted
- 6:16Speaker 1: orcs at the White Sands missile Range. We're not there.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I'll rehash off range in New Mexico. We had a
- 6:27Speaker 1: whole show about this, but I us explained it folks
- 6:29Speaker 1: real quick. In New Mexico, there's like two RICS hunts.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It's more complicating this, but just to simplify things, there's
- 6:35Speaker 1: two RICS hunts. There's on range, which means you get
- 6:38Speaker 1: to actually hunt the White Sands missile range, and it's
- 6:40Speaker 1: real hand holding, Like it's like a nine percent success rate,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but real handholding. You gotta go do a little seminar.
- 6:49Speaker 1: They kind of tell you you can go over there,
- 6:51Speaker 1: but you can't go over there. And at seven o'clock
- 6:53Speaker 1: you gotta be out of here and you can't start
- 6:55Speaker 1: until it's just very like you know, it's like being
- 6:59Speaker 1: in the army. Yeah, and it's on. It's that way
- 7:02Speaker 1: because on a military base secret they got unexploded ordinance
- 7:06Speaker 1: all around. Yeah, they got aliens locked up. It's like
- 7:10Speaker 1: they got all kinds of stuff going on there. So
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's real handholding, but you're gonna get one, like if
- 7:17Speaker 1: you show up, you'll get one, and they call it
- 7:19Speaker 1: once in a lifetime hunt. So once you draw on range,
- 7:21Speaker 1: you can't ever draw it again. Meanwhile, the rest of
- 7:24Speaker 1: the damn state is off range. And that's a very
- 7:27Speaker 1: low success rate. Um, what was it? I remember? What
- 7:32Speaker 1: what's the ten percent? Why do they fail? Just probably
- 7:35Speaker 1: don't show up up or their their day. Want a hog? Right,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you have no idea? And on range they got all
- 7:42Speaker 1: this other ship like they got a broken horn season
- 7:46Speaker 1: where you can shoot one with a busted horn. It's crazy,
- 7:48Speaker 1: but I'm trying to speak generally. Anyhow, when you're hunting
- 7:52Speaker 1: off range, you can hunt the whole damn state, but
- 7:54Speaker 1: it makes most sense to hunt along the fence line.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Then some bitch things hundred thirty miles and the at
- 8:00Speaker 1: the south. We just kind of worked one the western
- 8:04Speaker 1: We kind of worked the western edge within zero within
- 8:08Speaker 1: leaning on the fence, which I always felt guilty about.
- 8:12Speaker 1: When I leaned on that fence, I kind of leaned
- 8:13Speaker 1: flath handed so that my fingers didn't go into the
- 8:15Speaker 1: missile range. From leaning on the fence to five what
- 8:20Speaker 1: five six? We killed one what five miles off five
- 8:23Speaker 1: miles out of the range. You'll appreciate this story. Something
- 8:29Speaker 1: happens there where footprints, thousands of year old footprints get
- 8:34Speaker 1: solidified in that sand down there, Like when conditions are right,
- 8:39Speaker 1: someone can walk through and leave footprints in the mud.
- 8:42Speaker 1: That's what it is. When when it happens to be wet,
- 8:46Speaker 1: you leave a footprint, and the way it dries and
- 8:49Speaker 1: blows in, things that happened in the mud gets stuck
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the mud, Like what concrete sidewalkers. Check this out.
- 8:57Speaker 1: This is the coolest thing in the world. I like
- 9:00Speaker 1: to think Rick could appreciate it, but he uh, I
- 9:02Speaker 1: don't know. You have to tell us Rick. I wish
- 9:04Speaker 1: Rick had one of those dials. You could just tell how.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I want to get some dials installed in here where
- 9:11Speaker 1: people that are in can turn it up if they
- 9:13Speaker 1: like what they're hearing, and turn it down if they don't,
- 9:16Speaker 1: because it would improve the quality of the show so much. Yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 1: but you'd be looking at the dial. That's all I
- 9:20Speaker 1: would look at right now, I just look at the timer.
- 9:23Speaker 1: If there was a dial and all the dials minute
- 9:27Speaker 1: by minute ratings, that's what you want. Yes, I don't
- 9:29Speaker 1: know everyone in here had a dial, and in all
- 9:32Speaker 1: those dials, people don't know what they want. All those
- 9:34Speaker 1: dials were collated into a single meter. So Kurt might
- 9:37Speaker 1: be like zero zero zero doesn't like this story. Great,
- 9:41Speaker 1: could be like I love it, and Ridge poonders like
- 9:43Speaker 1: ten ten so it's throwing me or whatever. Five. That's
- 9:47Speaker 1: how you get mediocrity. I feel like when I tell
- 9:50Speaker 1: you what I'm gonna now tell you this, that son
- 9:52Speaker 1: of a bit should be code read ten. Okay, they
- 9:59Speaker 1: got some foot prints, hear this out? They have some
- 10:01Speaker 1: footprints today know are at least ten thousand years old.
- 10:08Speaker 1: In the White Sands. Outside of the closed area, they
- 10:11Speaker 1: can't follow the trail into the top secret part of
- 10:15Speaker 1: the missile range. They're not allowed to follow the trail
- 10:17Speaker 1: in it. It's a long trail of a barefoot person.
- 10:22Speaker 1: They feel it was a young mailer woman based on
- 10:25Speaker 1: shoe size, carrying a child on their hip barefoot. How
- 10:32Speaker 1: can they tell that because they think it was on
- 10:37Speaker 1: its carrying it on its left hip because now and
- 10:41Speaker 1: then they'd set the kid down. Oh, and they would
- 10:43Speaker 1: have the footprints. So it's a youngish male or female
- 10:50Speaker 1: carrying a child, occasionally setting the child down. The child
- 10:54Speaker 1: walks with when the child's not walking, the gate of
- 10:57Speaker 1: the person changes in their way. There a more weight
- 11:00Speaker 1: on the left HIPO. They walked one way and then
- 11:08Speaker 1: they came back on their same trail, and in the
- 11:12Speaker 1: time they were gone, a mammoth and a giant ground
- 11:17Speaker 1: sloth stepped on their tracks, and they're able to the
- 11:25Speaker 1: mammoth and ground sloth tracks on the person's tracks. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: then the person came back over the same trail, crossed
- 11:32Speaker 1: the mammoth and ground sloth tracks, not carrying the child.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Oh my god, not carrying the child, not caring. They
- 11:40Speaker 1: brought the kid, oh wherever. Someone's like, hey, can watched
- 11:45Speaker 1: my kid? And you're like, I slot, can you, like whatever?
- 11:52Speaker 1: Can you watch my kid today? I'm having a date night,
- 11:59Speaker 1: So if you don't mind, bring it back over to
- 12:01Speaker 1: my camp later. What wouldn't the climate have been ten
- 12:06Speaker 1: thousand years ago in New Mexico in that area they
- 12:15Speaker 1: definitely had and there was mud. Yeah, there was MUDs.
- 12:18Speaker 1: It's not like it wasn't frozen. But there's a mammoth.
- 12:22Speaker 1: That's why they know the date. I think it's like
- 12:24Speaker 1: it's obviously like you gotta think it wasn't the last mammoth,
- 12:29Speaker 1: but that it was the last mammoth that crossed her trail. Yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 1: so you know, the clock changes all the time, Like
- 12:41Speaker 1: the first humans to arrive here, the fashionable number used
- 12:44Speaker 1: to be like thirteen thousand years ago. Now they got
- 12:47Speaker 1: sites sometime around twenty years ago. Mammoths were largely gone by,
- 12:53Speaker 1: you know, twelve thirteen thousand years ago. So somewhere in
- 12:56Speaker 1: that window there's a theory that not really a theory
- 13:01Speaker 1: that you couldn't have peopled the America's prior to the
- 13:05Speaker 1: invention of the eyed needle. Like, they had to have
- 13:10Speaker 1: had tailored clothing because they came through Siberia. Oh yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: so these are people that had to have had to
- 13:19Speaker 1: have known how to make footwear, had to have known
- 13:22Speaker 1: how to make parkers because of where you know they
- 13:26Speaker 1: came from. Where's the meter at rick? Pretty high into it.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Tell me more, Steve, he could go Roger Ebert and
- 13:35Speaker 1: he'd be thrown a couple of thumbs right now, so
- 13:38Speaker 1: rix meters? Yeah, like high. So these tracks just the
- 13:44Speaker 1: sand eventually blew away and they walked in the mud.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'm looking. I got the thing right now, so it's
- 13:52Speaker 1: like sandstone now yeah, well no, because here's the thing.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I'm looking at the article trying to not just have
- 13:58Speaker 1: to read the damn article, but it they walked in
- 14:04Speaker 1: the mud, and we're sliding a lot in the mud
- 14:08Speaker 1: and wish they had some schnaze boots or something. Yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I wish they had crampons or something. They were sliding
- 14:13Speaker 1: a lot in the mud and dodging something like now
- 14:19Speaker 1: and then revering and hopping. They throw mud puddles, are
- 14:25Speaker 1: mammoth ship whatever. They had some hops, so yeah, they'd
- 14:33Speaker 1: set the kid down and rest down, then kid a
- 14:36Speaker 1: mill around. What what happens is um, So there's four
- 14:40Speaker 1: hundred footprints and they would make a track in the
- 14:49Speaker 1: mud and then things with dry and sand and blow
- 14:52Speaker 1: in the problem with they've known about the tracks for
- 14:55Speaker 1: a while. The minute you excavate the track and reveal it,
- 15:01Speaker 1: it's it vanishes. Oh man, So they film it or
- 15:06Speaker 1: some purposefully, don't you know, going and do them all.
- 15:11Speaker 1: But they said, it's full of White Sands National Park.
- 15:13Speaker 1: It's full of these old prints. That's crazy. That's really cool.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And there's a slight shifting coloration that will reveal the
- 15:20Speaker 1: tracks when you guys were down there called ghost tracks
- 15:23Speaker 1: when you guys were hunting, did you was it that
- 15:26Speaker 1: that climate that you left your mark? Oh? I'm sure
- 15:29Speaker 1: someday they'll dig it up and be like, uh, they'll
- 15:33Speaker 1: find me in South in there real vibro logo. Some
- 15:38Speaker 1: guy really knew what was up with some dude kind
- 15:40Speaker 1: of I didn't really know what was up. You can
- 15:44Speaker 1: tell his tracks. No, that's great, that's an interesting story.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Now with your meters high, it's gonna make your meters
- 15:52Speaker 1: go lower. I had a I was telling a story
- 15:56Speaker 1: about my kid getting a nap a red legged fly
- 16:00Speaker 1: in his ear? Do you ever have that? Courts horrible.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I feel like you'd have that because you hunted him
- 16:07Speaker 1: Alaska so much and stuff. Well, yeah, the little no
- 16:09Speaker 1: cms that climbed around, but you never one against your
- 16:11Speaker 1: ear drum. No, not with the one that I couldn't
- 16:13Speaker 1: get out. It sounds terrible. It was in there, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: it was. It was so bad. It was affecting his
- 16:18Speaker 1: equilibrium and making him nauseous. Oh man, So how old
- 16:23Speaker 1: was he when this was happening? Just the summer hunting cariboo? Well,
- 16:26Speaker 1: we were actually butchering carriboe back at the air strip
- 16:28Speaker 1: at the not the air at the air carrier. So
- 16:31Speaker 1: was it alive and there kind of moving around and
- 16:33Speaker 1: freaking him out. I was with this dude, this old roommate.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I had this dude named Dan one time, and he
- 16:41Speaker 1: got a cat is fly. We're fishing. He had a
- 16:45Speaker 1: hell of a night that night. He caught a bat
- 16:47Speaker 1: on his back cast and he didn't like that one bit.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Then he uh got a cat is fly in his
- 16:54Speaker 1: ear and full whipped. Then he slept in his car
- 17:01Speaker 1: and wouldn't get out to peaks he thought a mountain
- 17:02Speaker 1: lion was going to get him. Um, that reminds me
- 17:10Speaker 1: real quick. I'm putting this. If you can go and
- 17:12Speaker 1: look on Instagram, you'll see this picture. Just dude to
- 17:13Speaker 1: send us a picture of a pelican that goes down
- 17:18Speaker 1: in his ditch and catches a carp. Tries to fly
- 17:23Speaker 1: away with the cart, but it's such a heavy load
- 17:25Speaker 1: he can't get elevation, goes into the power lines, hits
- 17:30Speaker 1: the power lines, catches on fire god lands and starts
- 17:36Speaker 1: a brush fire je and he sends a picture of
- 17:40Speaker 1: the pelican land there, hung up in a barbed wire
- 17:42Speaker 1: fence with a big fire scar moving away from it
- 17:45Speaker 1: across the ground, still with the cart hanging out of
- 17:48Speaker 1: his mouth. That kind of day. That's kind of day
- 17:51Speaker 1: this dude had. And we got it out with a
- 17:56Speaker 1: pair of fishing hemus like a hemostat. Oh you were
- 17:58Speaker 1: able to go in and do the catos when this
- 18:00Speaker 1: dude Dan had it happened to him and we practically
- 18:03Speaker 1: had to pin him down. Yeah. Um, well my boy
- 18:08Speaker 1: got it. Someone's like put hydrogen peroxide in there, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: we dumped hydrogen peroxide there and holy ship, that bug
- 18:14Speaker 1: come out in a hurry well. Our resident physician here
- 18:18Speaker 1: at Meat Eater, Adam Lazarre, wrote in advising don't do that.
- 18:26Speaker 1: He says, on average, he's an emergency room. He's been
- 18:29Speaker 1: on the podcast. Uh. When he was on the podcast,
- 18:34Speaker 1: the thing I remember most is that you remember, like
- 18:36Speaker 1: for our whole lives, for our everyone in this room,
- 18:39Speaker 1: our age group, car crashes where our lead cause of
- 18:43Speaker 1: death had always been that. When he was on um,
- 18:48Speaker 1: opioid overdoses had surpassed car crashes as the thing that
- 18:56Speaker 1: will kill you man, cardiac arrests. No, that kicks in
- 19:01Speaker 1: next between thirty and four year Yeah, it was like
- 19:07Speaker 1: it had always been like vehicular collisions would kick in
- 19:10Speaker 1: it like eighteen or something like that, or sixteen, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: then up to a certain date like that's what that
- 19:15Speaker 1: would be your lead cause of death, and then it
- 19:16Speaker 1: switches to like heart disease and all that. Ship. But
- 19:19Speaker 1: opioid overdoses for males, opioids were killing more dudes than cars. Jeez,
- 19:29Speaker 1: it's a real problem. I got a bug ear thing.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Could I didn't know? Please hold tight talks, let me
- 19:34Speaker 1: finish my thing. That's why, because I need to point
- 19:36Speaker 1: this out because he's like He gets people four and
- 19:40Speaker 1: five times this summer um in the emergency room, moths
- 19:45Speaker 1: and whatnot in people's ear canals. He uses a very
- 19:50Speaker 1: viscous light of cane to drown the bug and anesthetizes
- 19:55Speaker 1: the ear canal. Oh so he doesn't want because he's
- 19:58Speaker 1: a doctor and he has access though, and of cool stuff.
- 20:01Speaker 1: He like pain relieves and wipes out the bug. He suggests,
- 20:07Speaker 1: if you're gonna do this at home, dump mineral oil
- 20:09Speaker 1: in there. Huh, it's hydrogen peroxide is too strong of
- 20:17Speaker 1: an oxidizer. If you had a hole in your tympanic membrane,
- 20:24Speaker 1: the chemical could possibly damage the inner ear on the
- 20:27Speaker 1: other side of the membrane. Also, you don't want that
- 20:30Speaker 1: bug moving around vigorously drowned. You put that oil in there.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And he's like, he's not like, is that why your
- 20:41Speaker 1: kid ran into the truck with the snowblower this morning?
- 20:44Speaker 1: Is he all right? No, he just ran he also uh,
- 20:50Speaker 1: he also just he doesn't look where the snouts pointing,
- 20:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, just right in my face, man, and then
- 21:00Speaker 1: crashed into the Oh, he's having a great time. Crashed
- 21:04Speaker 1: into the truck. And then he like sees the neighbor
- 21:06Speaker 1: shoveling and abandons our whole project to go over there
- 21:09Speaker 1: and save the day with the snowblower. It's like, yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 1: go over He's like that first and stuff does he does?
- 21:16Speaker 1: He gotta matching many jigging ones. He like you you
- 21:18Speaker 1: g um go tell me your buckstory. Oh just on
- 21:26Speaker 1: fire and setsmate known about this too, But firefighters moss
- 21:31Speaker 1: in the ears. It's coming because if you're doing like
- 21:34Speaker 1: nighttime fireline cutting, all these bugs are flying around and
- 21:38Speaker 1: you've got headlamps and so a lot of times though
- 21:41Speaker 1: whatever whatever reason though right into the ear and they
- 21:45Speaker 1: drawn to the headlamps. So we had our superintendent on
- 21:49Speaker 1: the shot crew, got one stuck in for like a
- 21:53Speaker 1: day and just yeah, like you're saying, just driving him
- 21:56Speaker 1: make him nauseous. Yeah yeah, he was like, out, have
- 21:59Speaker 1: you been glad to be uh not firefighting this summer? Yeah? Yeah, no,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I mean you miss the camaraderie. But hell, hell no,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you don't get camaraderie hanging out with us. No, that's
- 22:09Speaker 1: what I mean. I got. I got that and that's
- 22:11Speaker 1: all that I got from firefighting. So that's all he
- 22:14Speaker 1: liked about it. Yeah, yeah, do you mind real quick
- 22:19Speaker 1: sharing what's going on with you guys, A little dipping,
- 22:22Speaker 1: like where you're at with the dipping right now? The
- 22:24Speaker 1: different products you guys are into now that Kurt reunited
- 22:27Speaker 1: Kurt's patch, that's one thing like that monastic bullshit that
- 22:31Speaker 1: falls apart. Dude, it's Kurt as a nicotine addiction. No,
- 22:34Speaker 1: but he stuck to his throwing a day. That's not added.
- 22:37Speaker 1: You haven't had one to day performance and hancing out
- 22:39Speaker 1: there and you've been around these guys. Yeah, and you
- 22:42Speaker 1: still Terence. You're stuck to not buying anything, yeah about anything.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Oh so that's why how you draw the line. Yeah,
- 22:50Speaker 1: but it's a little chink in your armor. Man, a
- 22:57Speaker 1: sucker person do Yeah, what what's product you're using nowadays?
- 23:01Speaker 1: I mean it's zen. It's just it's straight up science nicotine.
- 23:05Speaker 1: It's nicotine powder, so there's no tobacco product. So it
- 23:08Speaker 1: doesn't make you have cancer, that's what they say. But again,
- 23:11Speaker 1: as we're talking about at the trail Head, it's only
- 23:14Speaker 1: been out for like a year or something, a couple
- 23:16Speaker 1: of years. They don't know. It's probably worse for you
- 23:18Speaker 1: than but hasn't haven't we proven that nicotine can like
- 23:22Speaker 1: nicotine itself can cause cancer. That's what I had this
- 23:24Speaker 1: argument with someone I don't know, but I just assumed that. No,
- 23:28Speaker 1: I think, yeah, nicotine alone is a carcinogen or whatever.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I don't know about that. Yeah the fact checker, Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 1: fact checker, I definitely be wrong about but it is less.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It's definitely less abrasive and more convenient. So it's uh.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I I started him to quit chewing, and I just
- 23:48Speaker 1: double yeah. Yeah. Years ago, Garrett was down in South
- 23:57Speaker 1: America with his quit and plan was, did you bring
- 24:01Speaker 1: like a brand you were gonna quit while you're gone? Yeah?
- 24:05Speaker 1: And the plan was to bring a brand you didn't like, Yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 1: so you weren't gonna quit, yeah, it was yeah, it
- 24:13Speaker 1: was you're gonna bring a brand you didn't like. Well,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and so you brought Grizzly. Yeah. And then I ended
- 24:20Speaker 1: up finding when I ran out, I went a couple
- 24:23Speaker 1: of days and then like spent a week focused on
- 24:26Speaker 1: finding nicotine, and I found the general at a like
- 24:33Speaker 1: Norwegian hostel or something, and then you got dope. Yeah.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And then Garrett was saying he got back home and
- 24:39Speaker 1: went into a gas station and the cans were talking
- 24:42Speaker 1: to him from behind the counter and buy me. Okay,
- 24:50Speaker 1: so your flavor now with you like white brand it
- 24:52Speaker 1: school classic long cut in uh um, but you also
- 24:57Speaker 1: like have some of that and then you just have
- 24:59Speaker 1: straight nicotine and then you have some more long cut.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Well I used to put them both in at the
- 25:03Speaker 1: same time. I mean, if there's beers involved. Sometimes but
- 25:06Speaker 1: usually usually I would go but you'll find surprising. I'd
- 25:12Speaker 1: only do to choose in the morning, to choose in
- 25:15Speaker 1: the afternoon, and then you know, cocktail hour. It's kind
- 25:18Speaker 1: of game on the cocktail hour. Do you run one
- 25:24Speaker 1: long one or you rotated out between beers? Yeah, one
- 25:28Speaker 1: long one kind of is the two choose um one
- 25:31Speaker 1: right after another at in the morning and oh no, no,
- 25:36Speaker 1: it's it's up to me. But so if I burned
- 25:38Speaker 1: those two choose before tanna, I gotta wait till twelve
- 25:42Speaker 1: so I can't get you seft me down in the engineering.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So it looks great, it looks like so much more authority.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I know, whatever you said. But now i'd be like, oh,
- 25:52Speaker 1: you'll tell me more. That's like power sitting over this
- 25:57Speaker 1: this board, lights and knobs and slide. It's intimidating. But
- 26:02Speaker 1: now now instead of having a break from nickotine. I
- 26:04Speaker 1: pop his in in. Dude, I read one of those
- 26:06Speaker 1: ins yesterday for like four I'd like disintegrated my lips
- 26:10Speaker 1: and we were loping all the steep stuff that I
- 26:12Speaker 1: got all stressed out about. I ran it for the
- 26:14Speaker 1: whole day, which may or may not have helped, you know,
- 26:19Speaker 1: framed in our studio here is my favorite possession in
- 26:21Speaker 1: the whole world is when Dirt made the cover of
- 26:24Speaker 1: dip Aficionado magazine. Rick's photo when we were in uh
- 26:28Speaker 1: Wyoming Anglo punning. Um, I think chat was that you
- 26:32Speaker 1: that gave Rick one of those inns. Oh there's one
- 26:36Speaker 1: thing about this that cannot be spoken. What who was doing?
- 26:41Speaker 1: What dipping? Oh yeah, there's a top secret dipping. My
- 26:47Speaker 1: My dipping was not top secret. Don't tell any stories
- 26:52Speaker 1: about I had it in for like in it and
- 27:00Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yeah, I got all light headed.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I'm not a nicotine did you have to defecate? But
- 27:06Speaker 1: I know people use it for that reason. My brother,
- 27:09Speaker 1: his colon has a annex that there's a coal that
- 27:15Speaker 1: his colon has an offshoot colon that needs nicotine to
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's always loaded. Because he's like, I could taking a
- 27:27Speaker 1: growler could be the last thing on my mind, like
- 27:30Speaker 1: zero need to take a growler the minute he has
- 27:33Speaker 1: a dip. There it is. So the only explanation is
- 27:37Speaker 1: that there's a part of annex to his colon that
- 27:40Speaker 1: is activated, that's locked and loaded nicotine and the primer,
- 27:46Speaker 1: the primer that the spark, the flint and steel so
- 27:51Speaker 1: to speak, is uh dip because then there it is
- 27:58Speaker 1: over kind you had that happened at my oman camp.
- 28:04Speaker 1: You were having issues. Yeah, I mean it definitely keeps
- 28:07Speaker 1: me regular, that's for sure. Is that why you use it? Yeah?
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm kind of like Yanni when I think, yeah, once
- 28:14Speaker 1: you travel. Me and my brother one time we're on
- 28:17Speaker 1: an elk hunt. My brother is the same way, and
- 28:20Speaker 1: I swear we both didn't go for six days. But
- 28:27Speaker 1: our stomachs don't bloat. It's just like we eat, and
- 28:30Speaker 1: so it goes somewhere. It all up into the tobacco annex.
- 28:34Speaker 1: But that the the dip definitely helps the ends. Just
- 28:38Speaker 1: for my wife listening, it doesn't cause cancer. The research
- 28:45Speaker 1: didn't they say vaping was better for you than smoking.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I just looked it up. Nakeotine. They're doing some research
- 28:52Speaker 1: about its rolling as a cancer causing agent, and if
- 28:55Speaker 1: not itself, it metabolis metabolizes into some chemicals that are
- 29:00Speaker 1: cancer causing, so after you ingest it just pure nicotine.
- 29:04Speaker 1: They always thought that the other substances were the oh too,
- 29:08Speaker 1: but some of the you know, the gum and some
- 29:10Speaker 1: other stuff could still Yeah, but when it get like
- 29:13Speaker 1: if you go to like calor like, it can't be
- 29:15Speaker 1: like the California kind of cancer. Yeah, because that's heavy.
- 29:18Speaker 1: That's everything. Everything I buy you can't. He already knows
- 29:22Speaker 1: in California, get airplane, you're gonna get cancer for getting
- 29:26Speaker 1: on the airplane. Fishing. Fishing cancer known by the State
- 29:30Speaker 1: of California to cause cancer. A sinker, Yeah, but I
- 29:35Speaker 1: think nicotine is probably in a more reasonable category of Hey,
- 29:39Speaker 1: it's better than opioids though. Yeah. So I don't want
- 29:44Speaker 1: to be labor the thing. But I was telling you
- 29:45Speaker 1: what I want to do is get into um oh
- 29:49Speaker 1: the child. When we're down in New Mexico, I had
- 29:52Speaker 1: a dip off of a tell everybody what that was.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I liked a lot um it was. Yeah, I can't
- 29:58Speaker 1: remember that name. Mike Rule had it. I'm gonna remember
- 30:01Speaker 1: because Daniel Morgan wrote the best Daniel Boone, Robert Morgan,
- 30:08Speaker 1: the guy by the last name of Morgan, the best
- 30:10Speaker 1: Boone biography. So I'm gonna remember. I like Daniel Boone
- 30:14Speaker 1: and I like that. I remember because I used to
- 30:18Speaker 1: buy well, I used to dip or ch Levi Garrett
- 30:23Speaker 1: when I was like in college and stuff, just like
- 30:25Speaker 1: side hack? Was that a dude, Levi Garrett? I don't know,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it makes jeans too write or no, I don't know,
- 30:31Speaker 1: never mind, you know what. I'll tell you something. But
- 30:35Speaker 1: if like the Morgan ship was cheaper, so if I
- 30:39Speaker 1: was running low on fund said by Morgan instead of oh,
- 30:42Speaker 1: Morgan's cheaper than Levi Garrett. Yeah, so what this dude does?
- 30:46Speaker 1: This dude Mike Rule, uh, quit you but still choose.
- 30:58Speaker 1: How's that work? Because he beat the same thing. He
- 31:02Speaker 1: beat the addiction so thoroughly that he can now just
- 31:08Speaker 1: have a recreational dip and then not dip for weeks.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It's kind of like a dude that quit smoking cigarettes,
- 31:18Speaker 1: but like has a cigar every once in a while.
- 31:20Speaker 1: That's exactly That's a great way of looking at it. Yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 1: I'd argue that I'm a recreational dipper though, it's just
- 31:26Speaker 1: timelines different. I know Ronnie Bam, who mostly Ronnie Bam
- 31:33Speaker 1: got addicted to cigarettes through cigar smoking. He went to
- 31:37Speaker 1: the other directions. He started smoking stogies. He might tell
- 31:41Speaker 1: you this story a little bit differently for both my observation.
- 31:44Speaker 1: He's no, I think he'd agree. He started smoking like
- 31:47Speaker 1: old man type stogies, you know, like big fatties, then
- 31:54Speaker 1: started smoking like little dinkers and that was basically smoking stogies.
- 31:59Speaker 1: It looked like a brown cigarette, and then just went
- 32:02Speaker 1: to cigarettes. It's like one of those things like you
- 32:06Speaker 1: know those like evolution charts or like a little monkey.
- 32:09Speaker 1: He turns into a bro. It would be like a
- 32:11Speaker 1: dude turned into a little monkey his like path. Yeah,
- 32:19Speaker 1: so so he's off this because I remember on that.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I don't know where he's at right now, but he was.
- 32:23Speaker 1: He was chain smoking, uh Swisher sweets. Dude, he like
- 32:31Speaker 1: he like monkeys one off the other. Yeah. Yeah, Like
- 32:36Speaker 1: that's like smoking cardboard roll like tobacco rolling cardboard man.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Speaking of bone, here's the here's an art little thing
- 32:43Speaker 1: I want to talk about. Uh, this is this is
- 32:48Speaker 1: a this is applicable to me and Seth because me
- 32:50Speaker 1: and seth there are going on a muzzleloader flint lock.
- 32:54Speaker 1: We're gonna help with some flintlocks old old style hunting.
- 32:59Speaker 1: On a recent podcast US we were talking about, uh,
- 33:05Speaker 1: like did front did you did? Did users of muzzleloaders
- 33:12Speaker 1: not people who are like doing it for funzies, but
- 33:14Speaker 1: like people who are actually shooting muzzloaders. Um, did they
- 33:19Speaker 1: free poor powder or did they measure powder? And and
- 33:26Speaker 1: when you're watching old westerns, they're always free porn, right.
- 33:30Speaker 1: This guy rolled in, he said, there's this thing you
- 33:32Speaker 1: need to consider about this part of measuring today is
- 33:38Speaker 1: because we have standardized powder. Back then, he said, it
- 33:43Speaker 1: was way more art than science. And you're like, powder
- 33:46Speaker 1: was all it was highly variable And I forgot about
- 33:50Speaker 1: this detail. As Boon would even make his own powder.
- 33:54Speaker 1: How's that? Well? The first time he went over the
- 33:57Speaker 1: Cumberland Gap, he was going on a year long He
- 34:00Speaker 1: hunted and built up a small fortune of hides, otter beaver,
- 34:06Speaker 1: deer hides. The pawnees stole him, stole his stuff, decided
- 34:12Speaker 1: to stay an extra year, worked up another big load
- 34:17Speaker 1: they stole that came back empty handed. So he was
- 34:23Speaker 1: gone two years, ran out of gunpowder and he got
- 34:29Speaker 1: sulfur from deposit. He got burned willow, so he got
- 34:39Speaker 1: back guano for phosphate, phosphate batgwando for phosphate, burned willow
- 34:47Speaker 1: and had ash which was some component of it. Got
- 34:50Speaker 1: sulfur from uh like a lick, like a deposit, and
- 34:56Speaker 1: then use his own piss. They would wet the mixture.
- 35:01Speaker 1: They'd make the mixture and wet it with your own piss.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Then you'd spread it out and let it dry and
- 35:08Speaker 1: you'd make this poderway this dude wrote in talking about
- 35:12Speaker 1: that's insane. Then it was like what all powder was different?
- 35:16Speaker 1: So the fact that you're like old Bessie shoots best
- 35:18Speaker 1: with a hundred grains of powder would be depends on
- 35:21Speaker 1: it just wouldn't even be like in their thinking. It
- 35:24Speaker 1: would be that there's hot powders and shitty powders and
- 35:27Speaker 1: powders that got wet too many times and you drive
- 35:29Speaker 1: them back out and it would just be just very
- 35:32Speaker 1: touch and go all the time. Um, So you'd figure
- 35:36Speaker 1: out your powder amount for that batch that you had
- 35:40Speaker 1: just a very fluid. And I think you got to
- 35:43Speaker 1: think about like now when dudes, um, Now, when people
- 35:48Speaker 1: hunt with most loaders, do you use any kind of
- 35:52Speaker 1: like archaic ar chick technology. This is the thing I
- 35:55Speaker 1: ponder all the time. It's like you're abbling in a
- 36:00Speaker 1: thing that was just what people did and new. So
- 36:04Speaker 1: if you're let's say you're boone, your father had one
- 36:07Speaker 1: of these, you had one of these, shot one of these.
- 36:11Speaker 1: From the start, it was regarded as a technological advancement.
- 36:16Speaker 1: It was a cutting edge piece of equipment. It wasn't
- 36:22Speaker 1: you weren't like fussing. You weren't like messing with something.
- 36:25Speaker 1: You weren't like experimenting with something. It would be the
- 36:28Speaker 1: same as like their relationship to that technology would be
- 36:32Speaker 1: like your relationship to your phone, just very ingrained, daily ingigrained,
- 36:40Speaker 1: highly intuitive. It's like it wouldn't you know, it's not
- 36:44Speaker 1: like now like, oh, we have this date set where
- 36:46Speaker 1: we're gonna go shoot flintlocks, you know, and blow our
- 36:49Speaker 1: faces off. It would be just like you lived it
- 36:53Speaker 1: all the time. So I just probably didn't feel like
- 36:58Speaker 1: how we think it felt. But I'm sure there's improvements
- 37:01Speaker 1: within within each of those technologies that they're really excited
- 37:04Speaker 1: about totally, like little small things like like smooth board
- 37:08Speaker 1: to rifle barrels, yeah, or big advancement. What are what
- 37:13Speaker 1: are you guys shooting? Is it rifled? What's the range
- 37:18Speaker 1: for you guys? This hunt? I guess depends on the person,
- 37:21Speaker 1: but I'm I'm looking fifty yards and in tick liquor?
- 37:31Speaker 1: What's yours? Steve? Like close like the bull. I wounded
- 37:37Speaker 1: the bull and lost it last year with the not
- 37:40Speaker 1: even Yeah you didn't even have an explosion go off
- 37:42Speaker 1: in your face. Dude. That thing hit the ground too,
- 37:46Speaker 1: that bowl. Yeah, so they lose their the they're just
- 37:51Speaker 1: not they're not hauling ass. Yeah, they're not hauling ass.
- 37:55Speaker 1: I think you know, when I hit that bowl, I
- 37:57Speaker 1: think got you know, hit it high up on the shoulder,
- 37:59Speaker 1: like knocked down. But he just got up and left,
- 38:02Speaker 1: like left like country. Barely any blood either, It's like
- 38:05Speaker 1: very little blood. It was like punching him, but no,
- 38:09Speaker 1: like getting shot with a bulletproof. Vest On learned. I
- 38:14Speaker 1: learned my lesson on that ship. Man. Now I'm like
- 38:16Speaker 1: Johnny tight when it comes to I mean, granted that
- 38:20Speaker 1: thing was you know whatever, six hundred pounds and and
- 38:24Speaker 1: that was like a bullet type like guess what do
- 38:28Speaker 1: they call those sabbots? We're true to I think it's
- 38:31Speaker 1: true to Bore, wasn't it. We're gonna be running patch
- 38:33Speaker 1: and ball. Yeah. Man, I've greasing my ship with bear
- 38:37Speaker 1: grease too. D So you take like when you're shooting
- 38:40Speaker 1: a flint lock, you got well, you don't believe me, No, No,
- 38:44Speaker 1: it's just funny. No, I totally believe you down in
- 38:47Speaker 1: my mind. You get a little PATCHA it's a circle
- 38:51Speaker 1: of cloth. What are you? What are you smirking about?
- 38:54Speaker 1: I just this is all I've just I've never heard
- 38:57Speaker 1: of this, you know, the you know, the old like
- 38:59Speaker 1: talking him to it that's killed all kinds of very
- 39:04Speaker 1: high right. We should make our own patches out of it,
- 39:07Speaker 1: called a bed ticking. It was like a prison. It's
- 39:11Speaker 1: like a prison. Suits like blue and white striped ship
- 39:14Speaker 1: and you cut. I cut square patches, not round. Nope,
- 39:19Speaker 1: there are square patches. I learned all this from um,
- 39:22Speaker 1: good family friend, the FETs your family. That sounds like
- 39:25Speaker 1: a old muzzleloader family. That's yeah, that's who got got
- 39:30Speaker 1: me into it. Yeah, because it feels like the van
- 39:32Speaker 1: fausen Burghs, I'd like, um. But yeah, we would cut
- 39:40Speaker 1: our own patches and grease them up. And then they
- 39:44Speaker 1: would you use for Greece. I think we use I
- 39:47Speaker 1: don't remember exactly what it was. Oh, you know what
- 39:50Speaker 1: we could use bear grease would be spython oil. There
- 39:53Speaker 1: we go. Oh, I bet no one's doing that ship. No, man,
- 39:56Speaker 1: we'll bring python because I got a court burning home
- 39:59Speaker 1: in pocket. Python oil. Oh, we had the snake biologist
- 40:03Speaker 1: on works in the pythons down in Florida. He gave
- 40:06Speaker 1: me a court or rendered snake oil. Whoa, what do
- 40:08Speaker 1: you use it for? The grosses me out? And not
- 40:11Speaker 1: use it for anything. He gave it to me as
- 40:15Speaker 1: he gave it to me as a oddity. Oh not
- 40:17Speaker 1: as like here, cook your eggs with this. No, it's
- 40:19Speaker 1: like a thing that you have and then you when
- 40:21Speaker 1: people come to your house, you're like, see that he
- 40:27Speaker 1: didn't he sent to me without tightening the lid down
- 40:29Speaker 1: very tight? Oh yeah, Um, anyway, that's like utterly disgusting.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Does the smell gross? No, but just the thought of it. Yeah,
- 40:38Speaker 1: snake oil, snake oil. Oh yeah, medicine you're talking about drinking.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Would you drink that? Curt Absolutely not unless if it
- 40:48Speaker 1: increased your efficiency? Probably, I don't know. I don't know, man, Um,
- 40:53Speaker 1: but anyway they would they would pour their own they'd
- 40:56Speaker 1: cast their own balls caliber Fatskers, Fetzers, fetzers. Really, man,
- 41:05Speaker 1: we used to have cast No, I never cast my
- 41:07Speaker 1: own balls. We used to go down to the gun range.
- 41:10Speaker 1: We gotta get to talk about what we're supposed to
- 41:12Speaker 1: be talking about. But real quick, I want to hear
- 41:14Speaker 1: what I want you to explain. It's more seth. But
- 41:16Speaker 1: we used to go down to the gun range and
- 41:19Speaker 1: sift through the bank the berm get the lead and
- 41:24Speaker 1: we would cast our own sinkers, you know. Cool. And
- 41:28Speaker 1: Ronnie Bam makes his own bird shot, yeah, which is
- 41:31Speaker 1: cool as ship. You ever see that done, Kurt, No,
- 41:34Speaker 1: I haven't. It's through a drop. It's just formed through
- 41:40Speaker 1: the air. That would be cool. Like they used. There's
- 41:43Speaker 1: a thing called a shot tower. I've heard of that,
- 41:46Speaker 1: but I didn't know how How how tall does it
- 41:48Speaker 1: have to be? Tower is tall? You're just like dripping
- 41:51Speaker 1: little driblets of lead and they fall down this shaft
- 41:55Speaker 1: and cool it formed into a sphere in the air
- 41:57Speaker 1: like a rain drop, and by the time they hit
- 41:59Speaker 1: the ground owned they're cooled. Ronnie's a little deal. Was
- 42:03Speaker 1: he doing an indo oil and water. I thought was
- 42:05Speaker 1: it water oil? I wasn't there. I just remember seeing
- 42:08Speaker 1: it on the show. I think he drops him into
- 42:12Speaker 1: I can't remember. But he's got this little thing. It's
- 42:14Speaker 1: got a little aperture on it. You melt lead, get cancer, dump,
- 42:20Speaker 1: dump the lead into this bucket, and the buckets got
- 42:23Speaker 1: a little tincy tincy apt a whole bunch like a
- 42:25Speaker 1: series of I can't remember twenty or a dozen little
- 42:28Speaker 1: apertures like pinholes. And the pinhole determines the shot size. Right,
- 42:34Speaker 1: So you dump the molten lead in, have a cigar,
- 42:39Speaker 1: drink a whole bunch of beer. It's like the Ronnie
- 42:41Speaker 1: Bam recipe. Sit in a closed area or whatever. Uh
- 42:46Speaker 1: and Out dribbles all of his But I mean this
- 42:49Speaker 1: dudes like a like a he's a tinker, Like he's
- 42:52Speaker 1: like he could make anything. He's like remember in the
- 42:55Speaker 1: end of the A Team, they'd always find like a
- 42:56Speaker 1: sweet shop. Yeah, like he Ronnie smoke. Those dudes on
- 43:00Speaker 1: from the A Team like to rig up ship in
- 43:03Speaker 1: a shop. Uh and Out would dribble all these little
- 43:07Speaker 1: dribbles and they'd fall through the air and land and
- 43:10Speaker 1: where would hell? He cooled it with oh some I'm
- 43:13Speaker 1: liquid water, water would cause bubbling in it. He dripped
- 43:18Speaker 1: into some kind of oil. But I don't remember dealing
- 43:21Speaker 1: with a bunch of oily ash shot. I was any
- 43:26Speaker 1: good at fact check, and he had this ship figure out,
- 43:29Speaker 1: so failing. Uh go back to the fencer's Yeah, no,
- 43:35Speaker 1: I'm just saying that they'd cast their own their own
- 43:38Speaker 1: balls and cut their own patches and grease the patch.
- 43:43Speaker 1: You don't know what they what it was, I don't remember.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I think it was just some sort of oil. You
- 43:49Speaker 1: just you stack a bunch of them up and it
- 43:53Speaker 1: soaked through. Yeah, so you take your empty bear, you
- 43:56Speaker 1: got your empty gun, pour a shot of powder downs,
- 44:01Speaker 1: put a patch, put a ball, then you gotta seat
- 44:04Speaker 1: that ball. Then ram at home. Yep. So it's powder
- 44:10Speaker 1: patch ball ram at home. And then if you're in
- 44:14Speaker 1: the Western and a dude charges you and you don't
- 44:16Speaker 1: have time to take the ramrod out, shoot him right
- 44:19Speaker 1: with that freaking ramrod man always thinking the lasting Mohicans.
- 44:23Speaker 1: When you talk about flint lock, did you do that
- 44:25Speaker 1: in there? Yeah? Shoot someone with the ramrod. No shoots
- 44:28Speaker 1: elk or something. It's like an opening scene, dude. Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 1: He's like chasing it or something. It's like very maneuver
- 44:36Speaker 1: in it. And when I did that, when I did
- 44:38Speaker 1: that g Q thing where it like called the breakdown, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 44:42Speaker 1: that would be covered that um yeah, sends that elk
- 44:46Speaker 1: a tea kettle, put that flint lock like it does
- 44:50Speaker 1: like a triple somersault off a cliff. So uh yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 1: And then the there's a frizzen up. It's a frien Well,
- 45:02Speaker 1: it's like this little it's hard. It's like a hard
- 45:04Speaker 1: steel that the flint strikes to cause the spark. And
- 45:09Speaker 1: there's a little buckskin. You got a little square flint
- 45:12Speaker 1: like maybe three quarters of an inch square half inch square. Yeah,
- 45:16Speaker 1: and there's a there's a little gripper, a spring loaded gripper,
- 45:20Speaker 1: and you line that spring loaded gripper with little chunk
- 45:23Speaker 1: of buckskin for grip stick the flint in that little
- 45:26Speaker 1: gripper cock the hammer. The hammer goes forward, hits the frizzen.
- 45:31Speaker 1: What explosion No, yeah, the explosion number one because under
- 45:37Speaker 1: that frizen is a little teency quarter teaspoon about of
- 45:42Speaker 1: fine powder. Yeah, Like the frizen is covering up a
- 45:45Speaker 1: pan full of fine powder. So when the hammer comes
- 45:48Speaker 1: down hits the frizzen and knocks the frizzen out of
- 45:50Speaker 1: the way, but still causes a spark, and then the
- 45:53Speaker 1: spark falls right into the flash pad. It's like a
- 45:55Speaker 1: rude it's like the rude Goldberg is contraption Goldberg contraption. So, yeah,
- 46:02Speaker 1: that's right. The frizzen fly is on a hinge, flies forward,
- 46:05Speaker 1: moves forward. This little quarter teaspoon of fine powder ignites,
- 46:12Speaker 1: and there's a thing called a touch hole, which when
- 46:16Speaker 1: your gun doesn't work, it's probably cause your touch holes
- 46:18Speaker 1: plugged up with the fine powder. Yeah, that little bucket,
- 46:21Speaker 1: that little quarter teaspoon, the wall of that bowl has
- 46:25Speaker 1: a pinhole through it that leads into the breach of
- 46:30Speaker 1: the flint lock. One of those sparks from that little
- 46:34Speaker 1: thing going off hops through the hole. He's surprise, and
- 46:40Speaker 1: then like he lights off everybody in there. So it
- 46:46Speaker 1: goes like clack boom boom, and you gotta hold steady.
- 46:53Speaker 1: The whole damn time is what you guys are doing,
- 46:55Speaker 1: like tree stands. It's like we're gonna do some little
- 47:00Speaker 1: to both that sounds setting and then some do some mooching,
- 47:04Speaker 1: some driving. Uh, you don't know this but I'll tell
- 47:08Speaker 1: you something. I didn't hunt it, but I killed a
- 47:13Speaker 1: bull buffalo um with a flint lock. No ship. We're
- 47:22Speaker 1: on a reservation and they had like they do like
- 47:24Speaker 1: these controlled harvests on this reservation, and like reservation members
- 47:29Speaker 1: can go out like however they want to do it,
- 47:30Speaker 1: they'll go out and you can get one and just
- 47:34Speaker 1: kind of I don't really, it's a little bit like
- 47:37Speaker 1: it's kind of like a weird sort of like you
- 47:39Speaker 1: like an experimentation with a live thing. I don't want
- 47:43Speaker 1: you want to sort that out right now. Many ways
- 47:44Speaker 1: we went out. I shot in the heart, shot in
- 47:48Speaker 1: heart in ninety yards. Dang, that's pretty good. Yeah, it
- 47:51Speaker 1: was like it was remember when about It took about
- 47:55Speaker 1: eight minutes, went laid down and died. No ship. Yeah,
- 47:58Speaker 1: I remember. One of the pretty most truth about Honey,
- 48:02Speaker 1: one of the elk Anny ones Will shoots a It
- 48:05Speaker 1: was in Colorado or somewhere. I think it was with
- 48:07Speaker 1: a flintlock too, but he shoots an elk with a
- 48:10Speaker 1: muzzle loader. It was either a flintlock of percussion, but
- 48:14Speaker 1: old like an old school I thought it was cool
- 48:17Speaker 1: as shit. Chester. You're gonna say something about the greasing. Well,
- 48:23Speaker 1: it wasn't very important. It was just about lead and water.
- 48:27Speaker 1: I used to build boat anchors, and any time lead
- 48:32Speaker 1: hit water, it was just it like explode on itself.
- 48:35Speaker 1: That's not well, oh that's right because remember yeah, I
- 48:40Speaker 1: was not explode, but it it loses its form. Yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 1: like pops and loses its form. It it forms into
- 48:46Speaker 1: weird shapes, just like Latin Yanni's laugh. Yeah. Remember when
- 48:51Speaker 1: we all had to throw the lead in the bucket
- 48:53Speaker 1: to predict our future? Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
- 48:56Speaker 1: You know about this, Chris, No, what's that? On New
- 49:00Speaker 1: Year's Latvians melt up some lead and throw a job
- 49:10Speaker 1: of it into a bucket of water, and it tells you.
- 49:14Speaker 1: And then you take that gob and it forms crazy shapes.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Then you get a light and shine it at a
- 49:21Speaker 1: wall and hold that gob will led that misshape and
- 49:27Speaker 1: gob will led to the light and it casts a
- 49:29Speaker 1: shadow and you twist it and see what you see
- 49:33Speaker 1: in there, and that tells you what will happen to you,
- 49:37Speaker 1: or it could inform your year. I generally tended to
- 49:42Speaker 1: see old arthritic imagery. Oh so it's kind of like
- 49:47Speaker 1: a roor shack thing. Like what you see is what
- 49:50Speaker 1: is gonna Yeah, I'm gonna try that with I gonna
- 49:53Speaker 1: lab be a neighbor across the street from us. I'm
- 49:55Speaker 1: gonna try it this year with her. Yeah, she should
- 50:00Speaker 1: test her knowledge about it. Oh, she knows. She hangs
- 50:02Speaker 1: out at some like l a Latvian camp. She like
- 50:05Speaker 1: it's like the Latin get together. Her name is Anga. Um.
- 50:10Speaker 1: She has some questionable opinions, didn't she. Yeah. I think
- 50:16Speaker 1: I had to walk away from a couple of convos
- 50:21Speaker 1: yet because commos I was like, you have a nice
- 50:25Speaker 1: day there, and he side and locked the door. Not
- 50:31Speaker 1: talked to you for a week. All right now, Um, Kurt,
- 50:48Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, Uh, I couldn't sleep last night.
- 50:52Speaker 1: I slept by, woke up many times understandable. Just uh.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I've ever been so um not have been just just distraught. Uh.
- 51:10Speaker 1: And largely I was telling these guys last night too,
- 51:13Speaker 1: I'm having three feelings, um, anger and disgusted at myself. Well,
- 51:21Speaker 1: I missed the mountain go to three I'll tell people
- 51:22Speaker 1: I just cut the chase. I missed a mountain goat
- 51:25Speaker 1: three yards. Nice, Big Billy Kurt feels that it was
- 51:29Speaker 1: an ex Yeah, I missed the mountain go to three
- 51:40Speaker 1: hundred yards, just missed right, like nicktim not shot some
- 51:46Speaker 1: hair off, shot some hair off. It's main, Um, I know,
- 51:51Speaker 1: we'll talk about why I think that happened, not that
- 51:53Speaker 1: like uh, I'll talk about why I think that happened,
- 51:58Speaker 1: but but not that like I have excuse, like there's
- 52:01Speaker 1: an explanation of the mistakes I made. Right. But the
- 52:06Speaker 1: three feelings I've been having. One is anger and discussed
- 52:09Speaker 1: self loathing. Two is why am I not more disappointed
- 52:13Speaker 1: than I am, um, because I feel like I should
- 52:16Speaker 1: be even more, have more self loathing and anger and discussed.
- 52:19Speaker 1: And three is just like, um, really feeling that I
- 52:21Speaker 1: let you down, Kurt, oh no, because I started trying
- 52:26Speaker 1: to draw him mount I first applied for a mountain
- 52:29Speaker 1: goat tag in nine and finally in twenty drew Mountain
- 52:39Speaker 1: go tag. I mean I've drawn him in Alaska, but
- 52:42Speaker 1: drew Mountain Goat tag and h we really poured the
- 52:48Speaker 1: coals to it for five days under Kurt's leadership. Uh,
- 52:55Speaker 1: snow cold Elevation train just struggles with visibility, but like
- 53:03Speaker 1: I mean, like finding goes but just like it wasn't
- 53:05Speaker 1: like it wasn't like a walk in the park, you know,
- 53:08Speaker 1: it was kind of like fog and whatever, just the
- 53:11Speaker 1: annoyance of cold, and then they're like just a chip shot. Yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 1: and I would have felt like, um, yeah, the primary
- 53:33Speaker 1: feeling I had was that, the primary like, if you
- 53:36Speaker 1: weren't there, I would have felt not as bad as
- 53:38Speaker 1: I felt, just really horrible waking up and just it's
- 53:46Speaker 1: like burned in my mind. I don't know, man, those
- 53:53Speaker 1: those things are all there. I feel like they're they're
- 53:56Speaker 1: they're part of the hunting experience. Yeah. Yeah, you have
- 54:01Speaker 1: to have the highs, you have to have the lows
- 54:04Speaker 1: to kind of have the full experience. Just like if
- 54:08Speaker 1: we would have walked in there and I found to
- 54:12Speaker 1: gout on the first day, walk up on it hunts over.
- 54:19Speaker 1: That was twenty two years. You put in for a
- 54:21Speaker 1: tag for one day. That's not much of an experience.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Like you know, now you have the whole process and
- 54:28Speaker 1: it's not over. No, it's definitely not over. Good way
- 54:31Speaker 1: to look at it. I like that. Yeah it is, man,
- 54:34Speaker 1: but um, it don't mean a lot more. Yeah. Well,
- 54:37Speaker 1: here's the thing I think about though, Uh, I'm forty six.
- 54:44Speaker 1: I'll point out your forty eight. Thank you for that.
- 54:48Speaker 1: I was like the other day, I was like, I
- 54:49Speaker 1: was trying to like as we're walking out, you know,
- 54:54Speaker 1: like the walk of shame, right walking down the mountain
- 54:58Speaker 1: after missing him. Uh, I'm like, man, really valuable lesson.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Like I'll point out a handful of things. Uh again
- 55:08Speaker 1: not excuses, but like a guess at where I screwed up? Um,
- 55:18Speaker 1: they got their winter coats, yea, and I failed. And
- 55:22Speaker 1: Kurt later pointed out, when you're looking at the outline
- 55:26Speaker 1: of that goat, there's a six inch buffer. It's not
- 55:30Speaker 1: a goat. No, especially this time of year, because it's
- 55:33Speaker 1: kind of that even though they're starting as you could see,
- 55:36Speaker 1: they're starting to come into their winter coat, especially on
- 55:39Speaker 1: those billies, the hair isn't so long that it's falling
- 55:43Speaker 1: over because when it when it starts to get really long,
- 55:46Speaker 1: it kind of splits down the middle like a hairline
- 55:49Speaker 1: like on the moscot, and it starts to drape. But
- 55:52Speaker 1: right now down the middle, yeah yeah, no, Like right
- 55:56Speaker 1: now it's it's like a buzz cut and everything's sticking
- 55:59Speaker 1: straight up. So it could have been more than that.
- 56:03Speaker 1: There's a bunch of goat. It's not a goat, there's
- 56:06Speaker 1: a yeah, a bunch yeah. And I was when I
- 56:11Speaker 1: killed one the only mountain goold I got before. It
- 56:14Speaker 1: was a nanny I shot in Alaska, and uh, when
- 56:22Speaker 1: I hit it, it had enough umph left to take
- 56:26Speaker 1: a couple of steps and go off. The abyss said, right, yeah,
- 56:33Speaker 1: I mean I can show you like where this happened.
- 56:36Speaker 1: I remember creepy like, how could it? I was like,
- 56:37Speaker 1: I could show you exactly how it felt. That fired
- 56:39Speaker 1: me like a like a face like you wouldn't believe,
- 56:42Speaker 1: and then got so much a nurse, you're going that
- 56:45Speaker 1: When it did hit the slope below it, it just
- 56:47Speaker 1: continued to go down the wet snow. Um. Anyways, it
- 56:54Speaker 1: was demolished. It Uh, its brain was gone, It's skull
- 56:59Speaker 1: split open, the horns were gone, the brain was gone.
- 57:04Speaker 1: One of its lungs was tucked up into its front
- 57:08Speaker 1: right ankle gee. The hide came loose but didn't come off,
- 57:14Speaker 1: and somehow when the chest cavity erupted in the fall,
- 57:18Speaker 1: it like sent a bunch of that stuff through and
- 57:21Speaker 1: so it was like up against its knee. Oh huge, anyways,
- 57:29Speaker 1: something to try to avoid. So then it's like, don't
- 57:32Speaker 1: you don't want them if you hit him, you don't
- 57:34Speaker 1: want them taking a step. It's not like like generally
- 57:37Speaker 1: big game hunting, I just play it safe and give
- 57:39Speaker 1: myself a huge margin for air. And I typically, like
- 57:45Speaker 1: my typical hold is halfway up and down, two or
- 57:50Speaker 1: three ribs back from the shoulder. It's like that's you know,
- 57:53Speaker 1: and granted's gonna whatever. It might take a step or
- 57:55Speaker 1: two whatever, but it's just generally like done me very
- 57:58Speaker 1: well as a as a just a you know, general
- 58:02Speaker 1: little aim spot um. Maybe a little lower than halfway,
- 58:06Speaker 1: but either way, I was like, I gotta I was gonna.
- 58:09Speaker 1: I wanted to hit it in the high shoulder, hoping
- 58:11Speaker 1: that it would not go off the cliff behind it
- 58:14Speaker 1: or wherever walk off from fall off a cliff, and
- 58:17Speaker 1: then zero my rifle at a much lower elevation. And
- 58:25Speaker 1: the higher elevation is uh, you know, there's less friction,
- 58:31Speaker 1: so you gotta cop. So that's gonna make you a
- 58:32Speaker 1: little bit higher. I was shooting for a high shoulder,
- 58:34Speaker 1: not accounting for all that hair um and dialed and
- 58:42Speaker 1: was dialed for perhaps a little bit like a tad
- 58:45Speaker 1: longer than it was maybe maybe, and just sent through
- 58:51Speaker 1: two of them, like through its right over the top
- 58:57Speaker 1: because the that steeper angle to your at appreciate deep
- 59:00Speaker 1: angle sharp angle, Yeah, which becomes harder to get to
- 59:06Speaker 1: get an exact range because it really depends on exactly
- 59:12Speaker 1: where you're picking. Well to a factor that we were
- 59:16Speaker 1: talking about last nights. I mean we're posted up for
- 59:20Speaker 1: a while waiting, which in my mind for me not
- 59:23Speaker 1: being near as successful or tenured as you is shooting,
- 59:28Speaker 1: would mess with me, you know, with scope on the
- 59:32Speaker 1: animal for thirty minutes or whatever. That that wasn't it. No,
- 59:36Speaker 1: I was aware of we should back up. Well, I
- 59:38Speaker 1: might back up and tell the story a little bit so,
- 59:41Speaker 1: but yeah, to get to that part. It was better
- 59:44Speaker 1: than we were having to wait for the get up.
- 59:47Speaker 1: And I was nervous about um getting chili. Yeah, sitting
- 59:53Speaker 1: in the snow and then in the little gap of
- 59:55Speaker 1: visibility was so narrow that you couldn't like go and
- 59:59Speaker 1: start the proble sense of trying to put a warmer
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: clothes on, because then you might get I killed a
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: nice buck one time, my pants down, not like what
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: you think, putting trying to get my long John's on,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: trying to get more before the Zippies. Before the Zippies,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: I hiked up to a spot, got where I wanted
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: to be for the evening sit. Got to the evening sit,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: thought I'm gonna get bundle luck so I'm gonna start
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: freezing my ask because it's all sweaty, and got my
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: pants off, started putting my l j's on lj is
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: around the ankles and then it kind of had my
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: lj's up, was getting getting back into my pants, and
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: all of a sudden, looking, here's the buck I was
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: trying to find. I got him too. I had to
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: pull my pants up to run over there, um, but
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: didn't want to do that because I was afraid the
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: goat would stand up and move while I was like
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: one arm in a coat. So I was nervous that
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I would started getting shivery, but I never got I
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: wish I could say that I got shivery, but I
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: never got shivery. Oh my god, I feel like such
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: a loser. Oh point I was trying when I was
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: pointing out our ages. Let me get back to that now,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: when we walk The whole story pointing out our ages is.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: When we were walking out, I was like, what a
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: learning lesson? What a learning lesson. But then I'm like,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I feel like learning should be about wrapping it up.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: My kid he did his first two big game hunts,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: so he's tanned. You got a mule deer in a
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: cariboo this year, he's in. He's learning, right, I did
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: a lot of learning in my twenties. I feel like
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the learning is about done. No, man never ends because
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: at a point your performance goes. It's like, I should
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: be at the the apex are apex guy? Still have
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: my physical abilities, I stive my cognitive abilities, and I
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: have uh like a tremendous amount of honey experience that
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I've been um able to get through my career. Right,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: So I'm probably I should be this should be like
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: at late forties, should be like what like you'd think
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: that right now would be this moment of just perfection
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: and you don't make mistakes. It was damned close, right,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: I mean it was that goat was in a real
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: tough spot to get on and it took us a
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: lot of patients to work through that country. It that
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: that wasn't a slam dunk, that wasn't let's climb up
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: over this ridge and as soon as you look over
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: the top how long did it take us to get
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: in a spot where you get a shot five hours?
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: It was five hours in and out of view for
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: a majority of it. So there's a lot that can
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: go wrong in that. So yeah, I mean to your point, yeah,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: we should. You feel like you should have every base covered.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: But then in hindsight, I looked back and given the
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: information we had at the time, I wouldn't have changed
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: anything that we did. Absolutely not. When I was sitting
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: there when we finally found him yards way and his
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: head away from the stand up, I was sitting there
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: being like, uh, astounded by the good fortune m hm.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Because there was a lot of ways when we were
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: trying to put that little puzzle together, there was a
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: lot of ways. I also wanted to point I was
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: called in the middle of the night when I was
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: sitting there, awake my Once we got up there and
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: looked when I was flirting with storming his ridge top
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: would not have been a good plan once I saw
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: what it was actually like up there, umen Like you know,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: you ever know, when you go storm a ridge, it
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: could go like you never know, But it wouldn't have
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: been a great ridge storm. It would have been like
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: you could have killed him with a knife. It would
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: have been like either didn't get him or got him
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: with a knife by the time you like when you
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: when you arrived in his zone, you'd have been like
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: on him in presume, but he would not be there anymore.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: But let's say he was sort of deprived of smell,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and let's say there's no sense of vision and no
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: sense of smell, or sorry, no sense of hearing and
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: no sense of smell. It would have been a knife
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: fight and you would have gone off the other edge. So, yeah,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: I wanted to point out to you, Kurt, that you're
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: feeling that storm and the ridge was not smart Um
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: it was not. Yeah, you were that that perspective of
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: yours was validated by the actual layout, which was not
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: quite how I envisioned it. Yeah, it was a lot
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: smaller there. Everything just looks a little bit larger. For example,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: we thought that he was sixty or eighty yards from
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: that pinnacle, and you get up there and find out
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: that man that's only ten or fifteen yards or twenty yards.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: It's just it's weird how perspective from that lower elevation,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: as you're working up into that country, how it changed
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: changed so much man um dirt head pointed out on
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: this billy goat weird stock and uh dirt to point
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: out he was bedded on a knife ridge. So it's
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: like kind of like the primary range, not even the range, boy,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: it it's like sort of the primary ridge line. Andre's
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: he's like a very steep night finger ridge that comes
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: off it. And he's better there. He can look everything
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to the right, everything to the left, and then straight
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: ahead is just sky. But it doesn't matter because nothing
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: come up that thing. And uh, he's betted on a ridge.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: It's no wider than him. Yeah, he was like his
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: body consumed the entire width of the ridge top. It
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: was like laying on a knife Yeah. I was impressive.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: And if you roll the foot, you know, the opposite
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: way that he was looking, he would have fell several ft.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I wouldn't be able to sleep up there. No, no,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: you roll off those things like heights. Yeah. We slept
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: down a goofy little ridge like that one time sheep hunting,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and my brother Matt said, if I'm not here in
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: the morning, throw my boots off. Can I ask her
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: the question just to your point about you think you
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: should get to a point where you're not learning. I mean,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: you've accumulated so much knowledge there shouldn't be learning process
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and experience. Did you learn something new this week? Oh yeah,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: yeah absolutely. Um. I think the communication portion. I thought
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: about that where we were in the spot where you
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: were set up, and I was trying to one of
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: the things that we hadn't talked about his shot placement,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: especially to your point about hitting them in the shoulder,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: and when we are trying to kind of communicate back
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: and forth that both of us were on the same
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: page to try to hit in that shoulder. Afterwards, I
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: thought I should have communicated more on the hair that
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you've just done that had done that, I'd be picking
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: blood off from my so so really it's my fault.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: I hope you woke up two in the morning. Yeah.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: When I woke up last night, I was like I
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: was up for a very long time. I remember looking
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: at my phone be like, how is the only two man?
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I'm already like up, just up obsessing. It just turned
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: into anger for Kurt. I wanted to know the answer
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: on my phone now is if it rings it to
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: this morning? Yeah, in the end of apocalypse now, Uh,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Kurts doesn't he talk about a vision of a snail
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: inching along a razor's edge. Fact check, that might have
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: been re dux. It might have been the extended cut. No,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: he like talks about floating the Ohio River. Is when
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: he's he's like out of his mind. When Willard and
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Kurt's finally meet, Kurt's talks about floating down the Ohio River.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: And because Willard catain Willard's from Ohio, Kurt's talks about
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: that he flow to the Ohio River as father, and
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: he remembers all the smell of the Guardinia's talks about
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: a snail on a razor blade, talks about a concept
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: hitting him like a diamond bullet. That's good ship man. Anyways,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: that goat was laying out there like a snail on
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: a razor blade. Uh. To back up, describe the area
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: we went into, Kurt Um. It's it's in a very
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: long drainage. I'm going to say the entire drainage is
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: probably close to twenty miles long. Uh. There's a road
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: that runs up somewhere in the ten twelve mile range,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: So there is a major portion of the upper end
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: of that drainage that doesn't see a lot of foot traffic.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: There's a lot of cliff bands, old growth timber where
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: I wouldn't say old growth, more like dark timber patches
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: that run down through. And then there was a burn
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: that had rolled through a portion of it as well,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: So it's it's really good goat country. Um, a lot
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: of escape cover, um. And and then because of the burn,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: there's a lot of feed because a lot more of
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: its open right now than let's say it was twenty
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: years ago. And it ties into the back side of
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: of a lot of roadless area as well. So you
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: see these goats being able to use multi pulled drainages
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and move between them where you have a fairly large
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: circumference of area that doesn't see a lot of traffic,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: especially once they're snow on the ground. And um, most
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: of it's in the nine to ten thousand foot range
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: where the goats are living, and um they're typically later
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: in the year like we're at right now. There isn't
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: a lot of elk population or deer population, which also
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: doesn't you don't see a lot of hunters either, primarily
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: because of that, and access becomes very difficult when the
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: snow gets deep. So it's it's real ideal goat country, um,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: but can get a little bit tricky late in the season.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: The lack of other games really noteworthy. Man, it is
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: it is, And I've been hunting that area for twenty
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: five years, and as we had spoken about before, I've
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: seen a very noticeable differ prints in primarily elk populations.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: It used to be phenomenal elk counting, and I think
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: that there's lots of different discussions about why, uh, some
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: people would like to point the finger at wolves. There
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: seemed to be a transition somewhere along that line. I
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: can't for sure say that that's exactly what it is,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: but as we were driving into the area, I think
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: something that was very telling was down in the valley
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: floor in the farmland there had to be two hundred
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: head of elk out there in out in farm ground
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: that you would years ago you would never seen that.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: And so whether migrations are changing or actual what they're
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: preferring for habitat, it's kind of anybody's gas. But back
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: to your original point, it's it's really neat area in
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: in the fact that it doesn't draw a lot of
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: people in after say September, and so it's it's a
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: pretty cool experience being able to go on these types
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: of hunts where you're not seeing other boot tracks, um,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: and you're just not seeing a lot of pressure. Yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: it just takes twenty some years to twenty two years.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: And then we saw a number of big horns and
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: it was like like one tag. How many tags are
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: in there? Yeah? I think one tag and that unit
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: and that'll take a lifetime to draw, oh for sure. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: if you're lucky. Um, we went in there and it's
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: like there's a thing that happens this time of year.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I guess it could happen anytime of year. Uh. To
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: film hunts, you know, there's a lot of there's a
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: lot of logistics and crew and people got a plan
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: for it, right, And you need film permits, and when
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: you get a film permit, you need to like apply
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: for certain dates. Right. It's you wind up where you
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: have you like settle on a date window and there's
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: a lot of that date establishes a lot of inertia, right,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: It's like like that's the date, you know, because so
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: and so we got you know, camera guys booked, and
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: we got our permits for that date. And then as
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the date gets closer than you kind of go like,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: oh yeah, I forgot about the whole weather part of this.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: And as the trip's coming up, it just gets like
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: just the picture just gets bleaker and bleaker. Um of
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: early kind of not I don't want to say freak.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: It's definitely not freak, but a significant early snow storms,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: a series of early snowstorms. Yeah, to winter storm warnings
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: while we were out, like actual like Weather Service winter
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: storm like advisories for the area. Yeah, like today we
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: shouldn't be sitting here right now, we should be up there.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: But it's supposed to get fifteen inches of snow there
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: today and we already got like what foot overnight it
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: would have been. Yeah, and then the and as this
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: as the as our goat hunts coming up and I'm
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: looking at the weather, there's sort of like comfort and
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: it was a comfort factor, which I don't want to
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: sit and act like isn't a thing. It's like, of
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: course it's the thing. You know, you can talk through
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: it and you have the right gear and make it.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: But it's still like an issue. Comforts and issue, um
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: not nearly the significant of an issue is difficulty and travel.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: So you're already in very precarious just steep ship. Right,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: you're a lot of steep ship. And there's a lot
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: of routes that you can't take. There's a lot of
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: places you'd like to get to that you can't just
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: go in the way that would you know, just like
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: go to it. It's a lot of like this and that,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: and you know down when you should be going up
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: and around, you should be going straight in order to
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: arrive at these like points you want to get to
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: because the cliff aces and and other things, and you
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: add snow on there and it just adds this like
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: a little it's like a level of stress. And like
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: even that level of stress is like a real thing. Um,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: you can tough through it and have the right gear,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: but it's like just a thing that's there, and it's
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: it just changes the experience. But the primary thing is
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: a visibility. Um. When I talked about getting that killing
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: that nanny that I killed some years ago, Ah, we
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: went into an area and sat in the fog, just
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: got to our hunt area, sat in the fog for
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: three days. Then all of a sudden, poof it was gone,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: and we realized that rimming the canyon walls above us
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: was mountain ghosts that had been listening to our conversations.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: I mean this week, yesterday was the only day that
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: we had visibility all day. It was every other day.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: It was a window of of clear Yeah. Um, we
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: we went in and hiked in and just right away
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: we went in doing good visibility and right away just
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: like seeing goats and when you draw a goat tag, uh,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: you're allowed to hunt a nanny or ability. You're allowed
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: just like a goat, write a mountain goat. They would
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: prefer strongly, I shouldn't say they people that want there
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: to be a lot of mountain goat hunting opportunities. UM
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: and state game agencies which really prefer that you shot
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: a billy. And they'll actually make like I make instructional videos.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: I voiced, I didn't like come up with the material,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: but I've voiced a video one time, like read the
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: script for a Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance video about how
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: to um how to tell nanny from ability. They wanted
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: to kill the males, and I read some statistic ones
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: that if goat hunters off mountain goat hunters only killed males,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: only killed billies. I don't know this is a statistic
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I heard. I don't know if it's how valid. Is
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: if they only killed billies, there will be four times
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: as many mountain goat tags. I don't know if that's
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I don't know if that holds up. I read that
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: somewhere they don't want you shooting the females. Um. I
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: voiced that video, which I'll point out like I voiced it,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: but I'm not uh good at it. I'm not like
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: great at identifying. Um. I sit there a lats scratch
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: my head looking at a lot of goats. Uh. For me,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: it's like when you see a kid, like a nanny
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: with an offspring, I'm like, that's a female. Other than that,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: I'm like, damn that. My mind tries to turn everything
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: into a billy. Well, I didn't. I didn't realize, which
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: I'm sad to say. The nanny's had significant horns. I don't.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I don't know if many people know that they gotta
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: they got a horn. I mean they look and it
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: was tougher than I ever imagined to just distinguish other
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: than they're being, like you said a group of them
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: that it would be like, oh, those are nanny's Kurt
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: pointed this out, and it's actually remember just being in
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the past is like another time I drew a goat
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: tag on the Key nine, didn't get a one because
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: we passed up many opportun females. I remember, like every
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: female you look at your like trying your hardest to
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: turn it into a mail. But then you see a
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: billy and it's like, there's a billy. Yeah, And I
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: remember we had that same thing out of kena fence.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: You saw a billy. We're like, oh, all the time
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: we've been spending trying to like talk these nannies into
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: being billies, Like that's the sun bitch and billy, you know,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: and you just know what knows that was true on
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: this one. But seeing all kinds of nannies, man. And
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: then the second day of the hunt, we woke up
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: and you couldn't see ship anything until like what time
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: of day one too, It was one o'clock fourth things,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: and then you're just seeing parts and pieces. Well, it
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: was funny. The funniest thing about that day that really
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: stuck sticks with me is that we went to a
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: little glass and look out and we just went there
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: and we couldn't see anybody. Just went there anyways to
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: sit and see if we get some Claire windows. And
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: Kurt knew about another little looking spot he wanted to
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: go check out. That was a twenty minute walk if
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: at more, just like wrap along, wrap across the ridge
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: top and an upward direction, and you get a look
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: into this other bowl that actually drains down into a
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: different drainage. And uh, at one point where let's go
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: check it out, let's go verify that it's too foggy.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: So we very if we walk up the like, oh wow,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: it's foggy over here too, just like we expected, and
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: walked back and we get and here's the set of
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: tracks solo, a single set of mountain boat tracks that
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: not only walked through our We're like literally walked through
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: where we were sitting, we later learned, walked between two
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: of our tents and actually followed our bootprints in our
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: absence in the in the forty minutes that we were gone,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: came through our tents, followed our boot tracks through our
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: glass and spot, and then walked and wrapped around the hill.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Yeah literally, like if it was two inches to the right,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: it would have tripped on my my guides from on
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: my tent, walked like walked next to the tent within
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: well within three ft of our fire ring. Yeah, oh yeah,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: they're like, I mean, there must have been so much
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: scent in that zone of us that it just was
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: and it just walked right through it. That's that's Murphy's law.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: I know it's overdone, but that is Murphy's love. I
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: don't think that's Murphy's Murphy, what's your impression of Murphy's
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: lawder if it could go wrong? But that's not wrong.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: You know. Actually I'm gonna adjust that if a goat,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: in my mind, Murphy's if a goat were to walk
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: through camp and a glass and knob, it would happen
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: while we're looking. Oh yeah's you're right. You're right. It
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: is Murphy's lost through when you're sitting there. Just I
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: think that they like, I think the only thing they
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: I think they care a lot about what they see.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: The smell is an so I think like their whole
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: groove of how they stay alive is based off um,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I'll see the problem and I'll go to a place
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: where nothing's gonna mess with me. Mm hmm. Well, and
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: that that saddle, that pass that we were in when
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: I had the tag last year, the exact same thing happened.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: It was just over a longer course of time. I
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: had left camp, went up where we went, but then
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: I had gone up over the peak down the back
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: side and was probably gone for three hours. Came back
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: and there were three sets of tracks that came right
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: by my tent, right through that. So it's a little
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: goat mag it is it is, and that that that
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: bowl that we saw, I was coming right up through
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: there as well. I think it's almost like a funnel. Yeah,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: a little hot like a little hot tip. Is we're
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: a bunch of ridges whatnot, kind of like collide together
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: in a low benchy saddle, it's gonna come through. Yeah,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: it's just like a little funnel. Yeah, there was what
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: three or four three drainages that or you know, the backside,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: there was a lot coming to that saddle. There was,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: um but yeah, we lost a half day there. Just
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: don't add their chester. Yeah, that happened actually multiple times,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: not just that one time. Uh, as I was going
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: to glass that night, there were more tracks in our
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: tracks going for the opposite direction. Um, like four sets
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: of tracks in our tracks going right up past our
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: camp again right in our tracks um, have you been
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: telling a lot of people that you got to play
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: guitar with Luke Holms? You got to play Luke Holms
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: guitar and sing? Chester is not even though, No, I haven't.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Haven't told a lot of you haven't leveraged it socially. No,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: he's got a wife. Yeah, I got a wife and
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: I liked being a little incognito. Do you real quick?
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: How you how you been enjoying your marriage? You've been married?
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: How long? Though? I've been married since August nine and
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: things are pretty good. I haven't got kicked to the
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: couch at or the doghouse, so I feel like I'm
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: doing pretty good. Did you guys know Chester got married
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: in a homemade bolow time made out of elk candler.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: I don't know that, but I know did Chester make it?
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: I didn't make it. You're an artist who made it?
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: You like such a little craftsman. Sounds like a little
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: bird too. One of Danielle's friends made him for us.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Seth has one too. Yeah, he was in my wedding.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: When I saw a picture of Seth, he was basically
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: I saw a picture of Seth a wedding. He was
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: basically at the point where like some uncle has his
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: neck tie tied around his head like a headband. There
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: was a lot of chest in the night, like a
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: cloud of smoke around him, like one aisle open. He
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: probably it looked just look like he just caught the
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: guard belt. I think if there have been a series
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: of photos, like a burst of photos, it just would
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: have been that picture and then another following frames of
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Seth just slowly tik me down to the ground. If
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: you'd have had the next time would have been tied
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: around your head. This is like dancing like. Sethi was
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: like ready to dance on the table. Yeah. No, I
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: had been dancing very hard. He was like, can they
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: play Money Money again? I was ready to do anything
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: at that point. Yeah. He's like, oh, they could just
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: play Celebrate one more time. If they've turned on Mombo
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: number five, I'm gonna burn this place. That's probably the
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: most tuned up I've ever seen you, Seth. Oh, is
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: that right? It was a good reason to party, man, Yeah, yes,
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: you're getting married. Seth was saying he wants to um Seth.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I don't know if you caught that, but Seth's kind
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: of wants to go to a bar with me. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: that's one of my life goals is to go to
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: a bar with Steve. But we could we go to bar,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: does it? What do you do you mean that because
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: you think that that would mean I'll be real drunk
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: or just that that will be just I just like
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: going to dive bars, and I think it'd be cool
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: to just But what would you want me to do there?
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Be be drunk and start a fight? Yeah I would
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: like that, I mean somebody with a stool to But no,
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I just like chat and I go to dive bars
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: all the time. Just have a beer. Just oh I
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: would love to shoot. I want to set a date
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: to go just after you get your goat, I thought
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: getting the shot. Oh yeah, I'll do that right down
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: right down the street. You got it all picked out? Yeah,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: just cross the railroad tracks. What we set I can't
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: perfect spot? Oh yeah that place? Oh yeah? Oh so
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: we want to get back to this thing though, But no,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: go I'll go. I don't go to bars, but I'll
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: go to a bar. We could buffer you too, because
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: I don't want to get the see one niner man.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: I's gonna wear my mask with a straw. My brother
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: thinks they ought to rebranded to see one niner. He
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: likes the sound of that better. It sounds more aggressive. Um,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: we're trying to get a mask and poke a hole
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: in it and run a straw. That's drink my shots
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: like that. That should be mandated'll be like z's free drinking.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: How do you close the gap? You're gonna have to
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: like Chester Cocke, he's a he's a crafty guy. It
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: is a bummer coming back into town after being in
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: the mountains for a couple of days. You're like, you
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: do forget about COVID and like all the crazy stuff
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: going on. You're just like, yeah, that's all still here.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: You know. It's better than a straw. Is a big
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: hood where you can do all your hand functions in
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: a thing like a bubble. Yeah. Oh yeah. There's like
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: a little pass through port where they can hand glasses. Yeah,
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: what's those balls down a hill? You know one of
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: those Remember when Et like when he got all sick
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: that thing, right, Yeah, be like get to go to
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: the bar and at I'll go down there and get wasted. Yeah,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: but I don't like having the part of the reason
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: I quit drinking a lot like the part of reason
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: I quit getting drunk, um was because I didn't think
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: it was fair to my kids, who didn't ask to
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: be born, right, they didn't like request to be born.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: I didn't think it was fair to them to be
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: hungover in the morning. Yeah, that's some that I mean.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: And I found myself being like irritated on days that
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: I would be hung like on a Sunday or whatever, Saturday, whatever,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: hell be hungover and sort of like irritated by their
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: presence when they were little because they were needy in
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: the minute. I had that feeling and be like, dude,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: they didn't like ask to come live in the house.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: It's like you had him and brought him and now
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: you're annoyed at him. Should a made some different decisions, man. Yeah,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: that's when I wanted to quit being drunk. No, that's
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: that's smart. A lot of people don't do this. Sick
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: of being hungover. Man. But I had two little cocktails
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: last night. I had a coffee that you had a
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: little coffee. I had a coffee and then I had
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: a giant uh rum cocon party and coconut. What do
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: you call that? It's called Jimmy Buffett. I was reading
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: an article one time in a magazine. It was about
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: like what celebrities like drink, and I took note of that.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: There was Jimmy Buffett was being featured and he was
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: saying how you can't get hung over coconut water drinking
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: coconut water and rum. I've disproven that, disproving that, but
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: it's a safe bet zero hangover this morning. Oh yeah, Mr.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: Half day because the fall m yep tons of Nanny
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: show could have a lot of shot opportunities on Nanny's
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: stock opportunities, a lot of me thinking Nanny's were billies,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: a lot of me trying to talk him into being billies,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: just at least giving them the benefit of the doubt. Yeah,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: But then what was it the second or the third
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: day that we ended the third day that we spotted
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: the one billy that we believe that it was the
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: one that we got on three days later. So and
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: there were a couple of goats obviously that we're in
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: spots that were so far off the by themselves that
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: you would suspect that they were billies, but you just
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: couldn't verify it. Whether rolled in on a couple that
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: were up high. Do you think trusting that we can
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: get it worked out and you're able to adjust your
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: schedule him go back out again. Um. I feel that
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: we would if we if we spend and we should
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: spend a day or two on this, I feel like
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: we would find that billy again. Yeah, yeah, I I
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: as long as he don't know, I would make that
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: my plan. But I wouldn't be surprised, and it would
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: you never really know, But I wouldn't be surprised that
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: you'd be like, oh, he's like back in one of
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: those zones that we know him doing the habit. That
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: would not surprise me in the least. You know what
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: you said when you spotted him. Huh, well, yeah, I
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: don't think you can stay it here. Oh no, no,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: you had just spotted a ram and then you said bingo,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: oh yeah, which is totally family friendly. That is family friendly,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: he said, bingo. You would you would know if if
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: you shot that goat, probably if it was the same one,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: because there might be a little tough to hair missing,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: like that bear in the great outdoors. Yeah, oh my god. Man. Um,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: there's six weeks. This is the will There'll be a
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: part two to this. There's six weeks of season left. Um,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I just really ah um, just so disappointed myself. I
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: was really disappointed for you at the time. You give
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: me a hog, I would have too, I'd still do it,
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: but I looked that down. Yeah, I think I think
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: it's just a little bit of perspective because back to
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: when we were talking about it earlier, when you put
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: in for something like this for twenty two years, I
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: think it's safe to say that you don't put in
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: for it because you want to go, yes, I'm doing
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: this like it would make an exchange. Yes, it is.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: It is vastly about the experience that you have, the
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: memories that you make, um, the things that you learn,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: and kind of at least for me, and one of
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: the things that I really enjoy about this style of
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: hunting is that it's always pushing your envelope just a
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: little bit. Um that you're you're staying out when it's colder, Um,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: you're accessing country that maybe you don't feel comfortable in.
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: And every time you push that envelope, your envelope becomes
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: larger and you become more experienced, and you you become more confident,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: and you don't I don't necessarily get that with other
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: styles of hunting that you do with the alpine style,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: and so where your experience putting in for this for
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: twenty two years could have ended at five days. It's
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: almost like a gift, you know, you get your tag again,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: you get to go again, you get to go have
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: those experience because it's so much different than than any
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: other style hunting, at least that I do well. She
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: hunting is very similar, but I don't know that. I
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: think that's why it's it's my favorite favorite time in
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: the outdoors, and it's not always the most fun at
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: the time. It's often the most challenging. I had been
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: in on a couple of one day go once and
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: it was a little bit of like my impression. My
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: old girlfriend has to the molaster, drew it once and
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: we got it in today. My brother drew it, got
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: it today. Yeah, I feel like they can go either way.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: I've heard. I've heard lots of stories and and the
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: odds definitely go up if you go in on the
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: earlier season. Everything becomes more complicated in the late season.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: You have to have a different kid of gear, travels
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: different obviously, whether locating them becomes as we have seen,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: extremely tough. What makes you want to weight just for
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: people to weariness. What makes you want to wait is
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: that they get that big crazy hair. Yeah, because no
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: one in the world is gonna get a mount and
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: goat and not have it the rug Tand yeah, I mean,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I'm sure it happens, but that's generally like it's like
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: a muskox hide. You're like throwing a dumpster hopefully not. No,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: it's like a thing of great beauty. It is. Yeah,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: it's amazing, and especially this time of year they get
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: that thick wool because they end up with the longer
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: guard hairs, the hollow guard hairs, and then they get
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: that real fine wool, uh right next to skin and yeah,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: there's nothing like it. So it's beautiful. Oh, Rich are
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: you willing to talk about your your Oh yeah, talk
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: to lay out your little decision making process there day. Well,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: so yesterday we got into uh, going up to get
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: that go that we spotted, and we got into an
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: avalanche shoot and I don't really know what happened, but
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: we got to a spot where we had kind of
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: tucked around. It's like pretty mellow climb right, like you
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: could have gone up that in view of the goat
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: but that stretch was like wide open. It was almost
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: like pastory, like very mellow, but it was in view
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: of where the goat could have been. So to avoid
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: going up that and getting spotted and blowing the goat out,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: we wrapped around the edge of that, which happened to
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: be one side of a pretty steep avalanche shoot and
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: below is just like a river of timber and then
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: a little creek below that and the river of down
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: timber debris field from an avalanche like pungee sticks of
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: like giant break yeah. Um, and we like started going
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: up that and then I think Kurt spotted the goat
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: right where you guys were pretty far away from me
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: and Garrett, and I think Garrett was in front of me,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: And then we had to down climb that. I don't
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: know what that was like sevent was that too much?
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Pretty accurate? And that was I don't know what what
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: was the angle? It was steep. I remember looking at
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Garrett and being like, this looks damn near vertical. Man.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: You stick your arm out and you're touching the ground.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: I mean if you stick your arm out horizontal. And
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: we had crampons at this point and ice acts. We
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: weren't on ice. It was still like soft soil, so
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: you had purchase snow. Snow though wet snow so it's slippery.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: And I don't know what happened, Like something just gripped
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: me and I just got like way out of my
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: comfort zone. And I've never had that happen on any
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: Meat Eater shoot. I've been shooting the show for five years,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: and I've never gotten like totally freaked and just not.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I just felt like out of my ability to keep moving.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: And there's a thing like in climbing where you just
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: like freeze and you can't you just like don't know
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: how to make your body move. And that happened to
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: me like multiple times on that down climb, and it
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: was just so weird, like a hummingbird's lips, yeah, not
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: a woodpecker. And uh so we find I get down,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: we get down to this little spot where there's this
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: frozen waterfall, and yeah, I was just like I feel
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: totally out of my ability to do this. And then
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: you guys were all, you know, super super nice and
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: very supportive and and we're like, if you know, if
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: you don't want to do it, you don't have to
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: do it. And I made the call to to leave,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: and it was a really hard decision. I felt very guilty,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: really extremely But then you shared with this that you
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: had had but then you'd had this feeling of that
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: something bad is gonna happen. I didn't want from that.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: I know the last thing you left us with was
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: I'm feeling something bad's gonna happen. Well, I remember looking
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: at you guys just bee like be really really fucking safe,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: and because something just felt fucking weird about the whole thing. Man,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I mean, do you think it was totally my head?
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: But you know, like once you get in your own
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: head about stuff, it's hard to get out of it.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: But like, yeah, I noticed, like I could see it
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: was funny because just having been with you in a
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: lot of yeah, well, I mean there's a lot of situations,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: including a bunch of situations of steep stuff, wet snow
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: and just skipping along problem you go lucky. Um. I
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: it was like I watched you sort of have um
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: like I was like you would you You're totally fine,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: Like I've just seen you do this so many times,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: but you just had like a thing entered your head.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: Something happened. Yeah, it was really weird and like not
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: to not to say you shouldn't pay attention that you
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: have to pay attention to it, but to your point,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: like the day, the last day that we had camped
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: before we rolled out because that big storm was coming in,
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: we had gotten up on that one glass and knob
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: that was like when we were out on the end
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: of it man, and if you had fallen off, you
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: would have been toast and we're skipping around him there
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: filming ship and like you were like you were disappointed
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: that that in that area, we were like mindful of time,
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: didn't want to go down in the dark. I couldn't
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: really see any reason to keep going. It was like
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: very dicey to keep going for like no reason. It
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: was like it wasn't like we were stalking something. It
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: was just like trying to find the source of a
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: set of mountain goat tracks. And you were like wanting
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: to keep going. And in my mind that would have
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: been like kind of like borderline stupid, yeah, because we
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: weren't like after something. It was just to the point
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: where like I would go if there was a thing there,
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: if there was like a shot operate, like if we're
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: like Okay, there's ability, let's try to get a shot.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: Then I'm like, okay, let's just go. But I would
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: never be like just to get another twenty yards of
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: visibility over the top of the ridge. It just wasn't
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: worth it to me. Yeah, that didn't freak me out
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: at all. But then you entered a little mind space.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: There was just something about I just kept looking down
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: at that that avalanche shoot and just like I could
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: just like see my body all crumpled up like that
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: fucking goat. You shot my brains, fucking goneng by my
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: wristwash and I just like, yeah, man, I just got
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: like so rattled, and yeah, I don't. We sat there
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: for a long time, and you got like we gotta
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: like the goatskin way around all day. It was a
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: hard decision, man, it was really I came down bombed,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: and I came down and talked to these guys. They
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: saw me come down the trail and they were all
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: worried all day. Chester ran up and thought everybody died. Yeah.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: The look on Chris's face, big wide open eye is like,
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: I mean, in some ways it kind of has a
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: symmetry to Steve's miss shot, and that there's this sense
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: of of like I let the the greater hole down. Yeah, definitely,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: uh yeah, I mean yeah, Chris, you were obviously like
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: very frazzled by not the decision, but the fact that
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: you made the decision of that make sense. And it's
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: not like I'm not afraid of like not like I'm
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: not trying to be macho and me like, oh, I
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: can just do it. And what it was just like
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: I don't care about that. The thing I care. I
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: just don't want to not one do the thing that
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: I'm here to do, which is to film the show,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: and also not have this experience that I love having
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: with all you guys. So like it was, Yeah, it
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: was just a it's weird, man, It's I'm gonna be
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: thinking about it for for a long time, much like your
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: goat thing when you wake up too in the morning.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: Let's talk about talking. Why don't you tell me about
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: the hair thing? Go ahead, Chester, then we're gonna we're
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: gonna wait and then we're gonna we're gonna wrap her
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: up because then we're gonna part two. Man, I'm gonna
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: call that episode the return. This episode be the miss
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: the reason why I think these guys all like passed
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: away up there is because you didn't hear what I said.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: You were walking down the trail Chris towards me and
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: I said, is everything okay? And you kind of had
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: this You shook your head no and you had your
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: head down. And at that moment, I trying to give
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: you guys a thumbs up because that entered my head
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: that like, oh, they're probably thinking something bad happens. So
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: I try to be like, no, it's all good, gone
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: to Heaven up they're up. Ah, yeah, man, Yeah it
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: was weird. It was a weird one long time left. Yeah,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I just am So. You know what celebrities do a
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: thing that they got to apologize on Instagram, They make
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: the apology video. I'm doing a lot more listening than
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: talking these days. That's like one of the things. And
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: you also have to um be like I'm very humbled.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: I'm humbold. Yeah. If I didn't do anything bad, I
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: didn't do like a celebrity mistake. I'm just humbled, humbling
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: train the whole deal is humbling about the miss dude,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: I know, but it's it's all part of it. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: I say, if you're if you're not learning you ain't earning.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, buddy poetry, how's that go again? If you're
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: if you're not learning, you ain't earning. That's what I'm
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: gonna call this episode. That's a good one. And then
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: the next episode will be the second miss or it'll
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: be the fall of the Goat, the lost the lost
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: body be like an Evert an Everst character. All right, man,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: we'll be back with a dead goat. With Noble Steve
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: so struck with grief and saddled with self loathing. We
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: knew he'd have to try again or else he'd risk imploding.
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: So we mobilize the cavalry, the whole meat eater crew,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: and sent Noble Steve back on the hunt. Here's the
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: story of Attempt number two. Okay, we're back for part two.
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: The only difference now is that it'll you'll you'll notice
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: a slight sound difference because we're not in our studio.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: And also you'll this part to the Mountain got deal
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: and uh, Chris Ridge Pounder Gil is not with us.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: Oh than a remind refresh everyone's memory. Who's here. I'm
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: feeling a lot better. I feel a lot better. Rick. Yeah,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: I'm I'm happy that you feel better, because when you
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: feel better, that means we don't have to keep going
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: out there because I know, yeah, people were worried. Chester
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: still here, Chester still here, Seth. Even though to you
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: the listener, this this part one just rolled into part two.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: But what you don't realize that, uh, it's a long
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: time later. Summer, summer came back, Summer came back. Winner
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: just showed up, Seth. Girlfriend shot a testicle. This dear yep,
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: real nice cactus buck fatty right, fatty dirt got dere
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: Kurt hasn't got shipped, Andrey got here too. Prospects though,
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: um uh, we'll get back to the mountain, go and
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: conclude our saga. But but talk about the explain the
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: cactus buck deal. I think people think so this is
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: a crazy story. Um my girlfriend Kelsey, she was it.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: Last last week, No, a week and a half ago.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: We spent a week out in eastern Montana deer hunting,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: first week of the season. And um, the one night
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: we went out with Kelsey to try and find her
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: a buck, and we were six miles from our camp
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: and we found this really cool cactus buck, still in velvet.
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: Its right side was somewhat normal, left side. It was
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: just like a just like six points sticking out of
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: the base of its antler, where like an aniler should be. Yeah,
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: this is like a hormonal imbalance, right and um. For
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: whatever reason, we couldn't get on that buck that buck
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: that evening. We'd like crest the hill and he'd be
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: a thousand yards away, and then go over hill. We
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: get to that hill, he'd be a thousand yards away.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: He's out trying to find his testicles. Maybe I don't know,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: he's not gonna find him. Oh, I you know what
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: you know, I stopped the other day, take my ljs off?
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: What you know how I took the other day? I
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: got hot and stopped and took my long John's off. Left.
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: Those sons of bitches layd there. Who walks away from
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: their long John's. Guess he's walking away from a track
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: and bowl to stand up and walk away from your
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: long john more priorities. So someone's gonna be like, oh,
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: it's weird fair long johns. Maybe the long Johns. I
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: started looking for the corpse that would be mum anyway. Um,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: So we didn't get on that buck that even the
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: next morning, we decided to go on a quick bird
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: hunt in the morning rather than deer hunt, because there
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: was birds everywhere. And we're back at our camp, and
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: we left camp and walked over this one ridge and
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: I glassed up on the hill and sure enough there's
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: that same book six air miles from where we had
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: seen him the night before. Who knows how how far,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: like with you know, he could to walk twelve miles
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: that night, hard to say, And it was, so it's distinct,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: and it's without a doubt because it's such a weird
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: like how many like bucks in velvet with a weird growth? Yeah,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: which the weird thing was that area. We had seen
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: seven different bucks in velvet that there's a thing on code.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: There's if you've heard of on Kodiak. There's like an
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: area that's famous for these these hormonally imbalanced cactus bucks
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: that like have weird formation in the velvet dries on
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: the rack. When you say cactus buck, I mean I
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: got that. They get these thorny looking antlers, these like
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: clubby Goofy's not the whole time I've been alive, I
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: didn't start hearing It's like I never heard about this.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: Now every other day I hear about it from somebody,
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: And just just by thumbing through Instagram, I have seen
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: several deer that have been taken this year. They were
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: still in velvet, different dates to Montana, Utah. Deer are
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: getting less manly. Yeah, crisis of masculinity and the deer population.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: And this deer, this man some academic papers. All the
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: bucks that we had seen that week, we're hanging out
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: with other bucks. Up until this point, that was the
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: only buck that we had seen. It was hanging out
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: with those like he just thought he was just one
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: of one of the ladies, you know. And then his
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: berries were I was saying that he had lost him,
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: but they were dwarf. They looked normal there. He had
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: a intact sack, and when I felt that, it just
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: felt like there was nothing there. There's nothing in there,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: not the sender or something like it. Did you had,
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: you know what, maybe that's what happened. It didn't even
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: feel like there were any little raisins in there, you know,
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: like he had the coin theres but there was no
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: change in drop. So you could just go on and
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: on with these metaporters. It's endlessly amusing. It's interesting, man
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: um Anybody if you want to read up on this
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: just go type in like cactus buck and there's all.
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: There's way better explanations than we're providing. But it has
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: to do with like it not having it's uh, the
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: proper dose of its masculine hormones, and for somehow it
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: like leads to weird antler growth and then the velvet
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: tends to dry yep on them, you could see a
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: The funny thing is at six miles that it traveled,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: you could see like a really ruddy buck, you know,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: cruising that distance. But why why you know, hermaphrodite dear
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: or whatever you want to call it traveling? That doesn't
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: make any sense. I don't know. I picked up and
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: moved that far that night he was looking was poor
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: poor choice on his part because and again pushed around
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: like others. Yeah, maybe he gets his ass kicked all
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: the time. Maybe he just doesn't have the same amount
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: of one of the biggest body deer though I've ever
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: seen my life. Yeah, that's odd thing too, just huge.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Did you guys taste it yet? Um? I don't know.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: We we we didn't do a good job of keeping
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: track of well, once you got home, everything got all
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: mixed up. Yeah. Um, so we went back like ended
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: the mountain go hunting in despair. I had a midlife crisis.
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: And it was winter. It was cold, cold. I went
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: through a midlife crisis. It's over now. I didn't buy
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: a car or anything, but I had a midlife crisis.
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: It kept you awake at night, kept me awake at night.
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: Not only that, my wife noticed the difference in me.
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: She knew that the missing hurt me hard. I heard
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: she was making fun of you for it made fun
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: of me. I felt embarrassed whenever I was around Kurt
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: when Jimmy, really, you go blow Kurt? If I only
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: could know, Uh, my wife is friendly with Kurt's wife.
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: So I'll eventually find out what Kurt said about truly
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: felt What about your your boy? That company? Oh, Jimmy
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: was not so you disappointed in your dad? My boy
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: was not happy, just very like what Mr Pierce doesn't
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: understand how it could happen? Turned into summer again, turned
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: back in the winter, and um, we went back into
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: the same vicinity and it was just like it felt
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: to me like I mean, there was always it felt
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: to me like a lot of mountain golts had moved
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: into that valley for whatever reason, yeah, or I don't know,
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: didn't it. Oh yeah, they were just everywhere. They were everywhere. Yeah.
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: How many did we count that first day in the
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: zone that we were in and we were only in
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: one couple dozen once. I mean, it wasn't a small job,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: but it was just a fraction of the area. So
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: we went back, had a great beautiful weather window, got
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: after one billy that laid up in a in a
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: spot that made it very difficult to shoot at him,
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: almost like he tends it, almost like it was his notion,
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: almost like he meant it. Um didn't work out. The
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: next day went out and we realized something was happening
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: that I didn't really even going into this, didn't wasn't
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: aware of. Is that you enter into that you start
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: getting close to the mountain go rut. Yeah. So the
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: we found two bands, like two groups of nanny's what
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: like six to a dozen, I don't know, and each
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: of them had a billy mixed in. Yeah, and they
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: were close to one another. They were only yards apart. Yeah, definitely,
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: like like the groups would definitely be aware of each
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: other and and you know, like interacting in somewhere or another.
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: And it made it, Uh, after a lot of frustration
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: and looking at billy's that were hard to get to
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: or wanting how you're going to get to them, and
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: wondering where you're gonna shoot from if you do get
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: to them. It was like, Um, it was as though
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: one laid it out on a blueprint. You're talking Saturday,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: What did I'm sorry if I'm not being clear. Yeah,
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: the one we got was so perfectly positioned two where
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: if you imagine like a little crease in a mountain,
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: it's like on one side of the crease and the
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: opposing ridge you could just sneak up, walk up, pop over,
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: shoot across everything perfect. Yeah, when there's six of us
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: versus just two people that you know are it's like
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: a whole different footprint for for travel. So having that
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: goat in a good position otherwise it's just like six people,
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: are you know something? You know even if you sneak
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: around pretty good, something's gonna Did you guys end up
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: seeing another billy when you popped up? Did not Kurt
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: look forward to? Yeh? I find that there's some poetic
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: poetic justice. Maybe that's not the word. Um that the
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: shot difference, It was the exact same shot, and uh,
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: I didn't have my struggles this time, didn't miss. It
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: was a little it was three or five, right, three
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: or six. But I found out in the days after
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: with ing my shot and contemplating it, I found out
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: a number of things, a bunch of little perfect like
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: a bunch of small things that added up. I went in.
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: I had a rifle that I had said at a
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: two yard zero without actually making an actual two yards zero,
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: like I arrived at it through math what my two
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: yards zero is, and in that process screwed up so
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: that my two yards zero was already high. Anyway. Then
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: I had like a a dope chart, you know, like
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: a drop chart, and I think that I think that
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: when I pulled that chart up, I was being lazy
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: and maybe even um I don't know if the auto
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: filled that sea level or whatever. I don't know, but
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: I was already high. My little dope chart was off
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: to make it more high. And then I was trying
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: to shoot the mountain go in the high shoulder, not
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: accounting for the massive amount of nothingness beneath the hair,
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: so that I was probably already kind of aiming at
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: not even aiming at the mountain Go anyways, and yeah,
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: just shot over his back and this time I went
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: back to normal aim and got him. Yeah that's a
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: good group. Um yeah, I forgot what you said when
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: we walked up to that goat, but when we skinned him,
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: you said, like, that's that looks like a pretty tight
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: group right there. Yeah. Yeah, a couple of shots, a
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: few shots there that that all seemed to be like terminal.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: But he didn't show like Kurt confirmed the first hit
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: was a hit, but he sure didn't show the signs
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: of that. Yeah, he soaked up some rounds. Yeah, I
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: was surprised. Um four and a half years old and
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: the bile I went, I just this morning took it
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: to get it check. You have to with a mountain goot,
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: you have to take it in to get it examined.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: And they pull a tooth and by looking at the
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: tooth eruption, well looking at the annual I so you
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: can count growth rings out him and Kurt, you had
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: a peg to four and a half years. But you
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: can see the lamb tip or the kid tip. I
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: guess like this first year growth and you see the
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: annually rings. Kurt pegged it at four and a half. Um.
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: The biologists also felt four and a half based on
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: the annually and then the tooth eruption. The dental pattern
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: also backed up four and a half. But then they'll
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: send it off for like a cementum analysis. And an
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: old goat is like ten years older, and Kurt shot one.
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: It was, Yeah, I shot one of those eight And yeah,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: I've heard of multiple goats being in that ten and
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: I think from what I've seen, very similar to what
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: you'll see with sheep where they can get twelve thirteen. Wow,
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: But I know it gets it gets really tough to
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: count those rings when you have a goat that old,
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: because they all stack up right there at the bottom.
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: And yeah, it's not like a sheet where it's spread
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: out over thirty six to you or whatever. So this
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: thing's horn, it's long horn was nine inches and it's
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: shorter horn was I think eight and five six eight
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: or something like that, eight in five eighths. I can't remember.
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: Very very sharp horns on it, very long, like long
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: winter coat, but not old like not a giant tasty,
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: very tasty. And when I was down today getting my
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: thing checked, the guy, I don't know if I told
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: you guys this. The guy was in there with two
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: big horn deadheads, very old, look the same vintage, looked
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: like the same where on him one of them had
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: a little bit of sheath on it still, and he
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: was getting him checked in and so he could keep
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: him for himself. Oh, he just found him, brought him
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: in to get him, brought him in to get him certified.
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: Like you uhould not be able to have it at all.
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: Right now, if you find when you can get it
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: checked it, did that change it this year? Last year?
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: It was either last year or the year before. It's
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: just just as I think this is the second hunting
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: Sea and where if you found something you could take
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: it in everywhere, because I mean I was, I was
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: telling you guys, we found that one on Grand Canyon
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: and you couldn't keep it. Yeah, and and I believe
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: it's it's it's obviously different between types of land national
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: forests or public ground post too. Oh. I wouldn't even
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: see a public ground, but I like parks and that
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: that's that's outside of that realm. So you didn't have
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: to check that at one time. Did a thing at
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: the New Mexico Fishing Game has this fundraiser where they
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: sell they auction. It's like for the it's like for
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: a group that's sort of supported. I can't hember how
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: it works. New Mexico Fishing Game Department, like some affiliate
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: organization or them. They have an annual auction where they
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: um they auction off like tags and stuff, governors tags one.
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: I think they do it at this, but they also
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: auction off all the ship that gets hit by cars,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: all the poach stuff, all the stuff that people find.
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: And they had all kinds of big horn heads down there.
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: It was for whatever you found it, laying um confiscated stuff. Uh.
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: I heard about a guy at one time that had
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: killed a bear in self defense and had to turn
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: into hide and skull, and then later went down to
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: the auction just as an anonymous person and bought his
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: bear back, and he had skinned it in some weird way,
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: so he had like made the cuts in some unorthodox
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: fashion so that he knew for sure it was the one,
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: because they then got it tanned, and he went down
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: and bought it at auction and knew it was his
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: because he'd skinned it in some way to leave his
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: mark on. And so now he's got his own totally legal,
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: but got his own thing back. What are you with
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: your goal? You're gonna how are you gonna have that?
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: Finished out? A rug with the head in? I had
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: a I had a tar him alan tar like that that.
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: I gave you a buddy. Imagine like a classic bear
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: rug with two horns sticking out the top on the floor.
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: Is it gonna be draped on the wall? The horns
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: are too sharp? Danger? I got a mountain lion I
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: did like that. That's on the wall. Um, I got it,
- 2:02:21Speaker 1: like I said, I gave that tar away and then yeah,
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna hang on the wall because the horns of
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: your kids can't be running around on that. No trip
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: trip on that thing came over, dude, its sharp, man.
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: I was surprised by that. You attack it to the
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: ceiling maybe so now, Um no, I'm gonna put it
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: on the wall. Yeah, you don't got much wall space.
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: I got a little spot for it. Okay, real quickly.
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: You know that giant buck dug during shot all those
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: years ago, they call the standards. Doug took it down.
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: Uh dog took it down to the tax and there
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: I was. You know, this is a good story. He
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: takes his buck down to the tax there was and
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: people are out dropping all their stuff off. But like
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: the text and it was just like get all these
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: cars out of the way, you know, let this guy
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: pull in. And and a guy asked Doug, um what
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: he's gonna do with it? And dogs like you've never
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: taken anything to a tax nervous before you noise? I
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: don't know. I guess I just like to get the
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: head mounted. And he said this, gaggles, that was my dear.
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: I had stuffed the whole damn thing and I got
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: a place where I could put it. All right. We
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: had agreed that, um, wasn't it. We're supposed to have
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: a shot. That's chester Chester's rule. This is like a
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: like a like a Wisconsin celebration. Yeah, kind of we
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: were in Wisconsin and you shot a buck, we'd have
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: some kind of drinking that that conversation, remember we were
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: talking how we would like to go to a bar
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: with Steve, but I don't go to bars, but you
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: don't go to bars. And then this it turned into
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: chat saying if you get one, we need to have
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: a shot. You know, when I get s one niner,
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: it's not gonna because I got that a bar. Yeah,
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: I wish I could say the same. I want. I
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: don't want it to be that. I was like, oh yeah,
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: he got C one nine? Or is that a bar?
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: What are you? What's the cheers? Was Johnny was here,
- 2:04:27Speaker 1: he'd probably have a laughing one to a success you got,
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: you got a good sky each year. Um to the
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: good ships, the bad ships and chips that sail the sea.
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: But the best ships are friendships, and may they always
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: be box big goats. O. IM pretty sure that's an Irish.
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: My problem is I was gonna slurt mine just to
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: make a loud noise so people people could have an
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: experience with me. But holy ship, that's smooth, right, he's
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: already looking at the bottle? Was that booned Crocket Club
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: whiskey seven? Seth gave me a bottle of that for
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: my birthday. Steve was over there that day and I
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: think we finished the whole bottle off that night. Okay,
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: here's we were saying earlier. I first applied for mountain
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: goat tag in this state. Uh, and finally Drew kurt you,
- 2:05:34Speaker 1: I don't know what you You probably applied since you
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: were a little kid. Is this your first mountain coat tag?
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: Last year, or had you drawn before in Montana? I
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: was the first one, and you had you been at
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: it for forever. I hadn't because the whole time I
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: lived in Alaska, so we just hunted gold up. Just yeah,
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: so I wasn't until I move back. Got you started
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: putting in getting points. But um, you're prohibited after you draw.
- 2:05:58Speaker 1: You're prohibited from even a lying for seven years. Correct,
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: So you're six years You got six years to go.
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: I'm entering my seven year hiatus, hiatus from even applying.
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: It took me twenty two years to draw last time.
- 2:06:14Speaker 1: I'm forty six. That puts me the I can't do
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: that kind of that level of arithmetic. If I wait
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: the seven and then go twenty two, who's good a math?
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: Seventy five years old SI plus twenty nine, sty're looking
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: into an easier unit. Let's even if even if you
- 2:06:40Speaker 1: only go ten or fifteen, you're still you're still in
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: your sixth decade. Yeah, I don't know how many more
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: years I got, how many more years of this I
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: got left in me? That's a that's a tough I
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: like it. The Kurts older me because he's fine. Oh yeah,
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: he's better than I am he's more spry. You guys
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: are both real spry. I was really happy to hear
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: that you were feeling bad because it helps. Dirt diagnosed
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: me not having enough of Regano extract. I got something.
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: Steve was complaining about jello legs as we're, you know,
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: going up three thousand vertical feet and uh, I mean,
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: you gotta take your time no matter what. But that
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: helps me out toning along a camera. Yeah, yeah, that
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: was a big hike Friday. That wasn't That was the
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: biggest hike at the trip. I think big and slow
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: as far as gain Friday, Yeah, yeah, by that not Saturday. Okay,
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna have the rest of my shot. All right,
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: everybody out there listening, Uh, rest easy. My midlife crisis
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: is over. I got my mountain go seven years. I'm
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: gonna be back into the game. Or like Sid, get
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: the get the kids, take the kids out. Listen, man,
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna see how many how many points do they have?
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: My five year old has two points? How manna ways?
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: Jimmy f too? Oh he does? I have four? This
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: is gonna be a while. Yeah yeah. My kid will
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: turn twelve when he's first able to apply for a
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: limited permit. He'll be coming into the draw. I can't
- 2:08:11Speaker 1: do that level of math. I don't know. He'll have
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: nine points I did do it. Is there an average
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: on how long it takes is twenty two years? Comment.
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: What this state does is they square your points. So
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: let's say you accumulate a point one times one is one,
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: so you're in the draw once. But let's say you're
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: a feller like me who's accumulated every bonus point you
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: could get. And I don't know when they put the
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: system into effect, but it's a long time ago, in
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: the teens. So you have like fifteen times fifteen points. Dang, sure,
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: odds are way better exponential. So but then everybody's like that.
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: So everybody's in there. Everyone's name is in the hat
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: like some odd hundreds. Yeah, you had name T Eggs
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: in there. So I have sixteen points. Now away do
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: you have jet You probably have more than everyone's sitting here.
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: I don't know. Oh so yeah you got two hundred.
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: You got two hundred and fifty six bonus points. My
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: kids got two. No, he's got two times two four. Yeah,
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: so you still got slightly better draws and than he does.
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: So yeah, but still he's gonna be a while, all right, everybody,
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: rest easy on my behalf. Oh plus them and go
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: tasted real good man, Yes, very good. Hot tip if
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: you want to have you being uh people out there,
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: if you want to have something good to eat. Danielle,

- 2:10:30Speaker 1: bit like I would never say this in front of
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: Jesse Griffith's, but she's kind of becoming like my favorite
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: wild game. Don't tell Jesse I said that I just
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: ated his restaurant here at night, So I feel pretty
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: bad if word got out. He's been replaced. He's been replaced. Danielle.
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: I like Danielle better than just It's not like anybody
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: listens to this podcast. When I was searching up that thing,
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: you know what I found it was surprising. Is it's
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: like a thing that happens where if you like auto Phil,
