- 0:16Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in.
- 0:24Then long, slow, deep, relaxing breath, and as you exhale, allow
- 0:35your eyelids to close and with your eyes closed, feel a sense
- 0:42of release, releasing tension, stress and worry in your outward
- 0:50breath. Breathe in a feeling of calm
- 0:58relaxation, and on that long outward breath, give permission
- 1:10to your body to let go of any thoughts, worries, or feelings
- 1:19that have been bothering you either recently or in the past.
- 1:32Breathing in, that feeling of calmness.
- 1:38And as you exhale, just imagine as you're breathing out, it's
- 1:43like gently blowing on hot food or blowing out a candle that's
- 1:49far away. Slow, easy, controlled.
- 2:00And each time you breathe out your chest, your stomach relaxes
- 2:07even more. Not forced, just relaxing and
- 2:14loosening. And maybe your shoulders drop
- 2:22and your jaw relaxes. Maybe you notice your hands
- 2:31becoming still or twitching slightly, and you may even
- 2:37notice that your body already knows how to calm down and
- 2:50position your body in such a way where you can really feel safe,
- 2:55calm and relaxed. The deeper you breathe, the more
- 3:02relaxed you feel, and the more relaxed you feel, the deeper you
- 3:08breathe. And as your body relaxes, your
- 3:14imagination awakens. And I wonder if you can imagine
- 3:25a place where you feel completely safe.
- 3:32Maybe it's your room, your home, or a place you've been to
- 3:39because this is your imagination.
- 3:41It could even be a made-up place that doesn't exist, but you
- 3:46still feel safe. And in this place, I want you to
- 3:55imagine people that you love and love you that are there to help
- 4:05people who notice, people who come if you need them.
- 4:12Maybe you can imagine your mother, your father on hand if
- 4:17you need them. And in this place, within your
- 4:22imagination, you are never alone when you don't feel well.
- 4:32I don't need to notice what this place feels like.
- 4:37A safe place with help when needed.
- 4:42A place where feeling safe doesn't mean that nothing
- 4:46uncomfortable ever happens. Here, in this place, safe means
- 4:54that if something does happen, you are supported and just allow
- 5:03that thought to hold, to sink in.
- 5:11And now imagine the screen, maybe the kind of screen that
- 5:17you would watch a movie on or play a video game.
- 5:23And on that screen is playing a movie about a boy who had a
- 5:32really difficult evening while on that residential school trip.
- 5:40And you're not inside the memory.
- 5:43You're watching it like you're in a cinema, watching it on on a
- 5:49big screen. And in that movie, the boy
- 5:55didn't feel well. I want you to observe that boy
- 6:00vomiting not just once or twice, but for a long time.
- 6:06Maybe when others were sleeping, but they were vomiting for
- 6:09hours. And the hardest part wasn't the
- 6:15feeling in the stomach, it was feeling that they had to deal
- 6:20with it all by themself And just notice that and then pause that
- 6:29movie, freeze it, rewind it to before the vomiting even
- 6:36happened. And then imagine something
- 6:40different happening. I want you to imagine on that
- 6:45same residential, your parents were there.
- 6:50And when you start to feel nauseous or vomit, help is
- 6:55immediately on hand. Calm, kind, steady.
- 7:05These helpers sit beside that boy and they bring water.
- 7:15They ask if they're OK. They stay and they say I'm here.
- 7:27Watch that new movie and notice how you feel different and you
- 7:33can make that boy you if you want.
- 7:36Watch it again, and then rewind and then play the movie again.
- 7:48And as you play it again, suddenly that boy doesn't look
- 7:55so anxious, stressed or scared or worried.
- 8:01They still don't like the vomit, but they don't feel that it's
- 8:07unmanageable. And once you've seen it again,
- 8:14rewind it again. But then imagine going into the
- 8:18screen and feeling what you would feel like if, while on
- 8:25that residential school trip, people that cared were with you
- 8:34when you started to vomit. They had water medicine.
- 8:40They wanted to make sure you were OK and notice what it feels
- 8:47like when you didn't feel that you were alone and just allow
- 8:55that new memory to connect somewhere in your body, your
- 9:01chest, your gut, your head, how it feels different.
- 9:11Imagine leaving that memory and still being in that safe place,
- 9:16perhaps near that big screen, and then bring your attention to
- 9:22your stomach, your gut, and just to check it and just to notice.
- 9:28And I want you to imagine inside your body there's a a dial, A
- 9:38control switch, the kind of thing that you could change the
- 9:43volume of an old radio. And when you breathe out slowly,
- 9:51that dial turns down from an 8 to A7 to A6 to A5 to a four.
- 10:01And you're not forcing it to 0 just turning it down so you feel
- 10:06comfortable because your body listens to your breathing, and
- 10:15those long outward breaths can help calm your body so it
- 10:21doesn't feel like it's in danger or that something bad may
- 10:25happen. So every long slow exhale tells
- 10:33your stomach, your body calm down and let's try it now.
- 10:40A big slow breath in, but an even longer breath out.
- 10:50And just imagine dialing down just one number, and maybe that
- 10:57number represents nausea or worry, discomfort.
- 11:05But each time you have a long breath out, it reduces by one
- 11:12number, just dials it down. And I want you to imagine what
- 11:18it would feel like, that you are learning control with that long
- 11:24outward breath. And there's something important,
- 11:34a new way of thinking. Vomiting is unpleasant.
- 11:39Nobody likes to feel sick. But it is temporary and it's not
- 11:47dangerous. And it doesn't mean that you're
- 11:51on your own. And there will be sometimes that
- 11:56your body needs to do it and it does it, and then it stops.
- 12:09And sometimes, sometimes there's big storms that happen but don't
- 12:16last very long, but they always pass.
- 12:24And I want you to say quietly, just in your mind, even if I
- 12:30feel sick, I can handle it. Even if I feel nauseous, I can
- 12:39manage. And even if I do vomit, I can
- 12:48cope. And it's not because it's nice,
- 12:53it's because you are stronger than the nausea, stronger than
- 12:58the vomit. And each time you feel that you
- 13:03can manage it well, it makes you stronger for the next time.
- 13:12And I want you to think of a memory before that school trip.
- 13:18Maybe you can see yourself on that screen again with your
- 13:24friends or with your family, going about places.
- 13:31I don't need to Think of a time when even if you ate a lot, even
- 13:36if you were eating spicy food, you didn't feel worried.
- 13:40You didn't feel scared and just step into that version of you,
- 13:48like putting on clothes, but you're just back inside that
- 13:54version of you. Like you're a character in a
- 13:57computer game experiencing the world through their eyes.
- 14:03And I want you to breathe how that version of you breathed.
- 14:07Think what they thought. Think of a time when you felt
- 14:11nauseous all the way back then and think that way again.
- 14:21You don't like it, but you know that you can manage.
- 14:26And that version of you, it's still here.
- 14:30Nothing was taken away. But after that residential, your
- 14:35brain just went into protection mode.
- 14:41And that may have been useful for a few days, but you don't
- 14:45have to stay there. And even if there are loud
- 14:49noises or scary news, your brain knows how to tell the difference
- 14:55between real danger and things that just seem a bit scary.
- 15:06But not every loud sound means something's wrong, and not every
- 15:12time you feel nausea means you're going to be sick.
- 15:21These feelings that you have, these sensations don't mean
- 15:25you're alone. If you need to be sick, your
- 15:31body will be sick, but that doesn't have to mean you're on
- 15:36your own or that you can't handle it.
- 15:40So take another slow breath out and dial down one more number,
- 15:47and maybe it's already at four or three or two.
- 15:52Every outward breath that's intentional takes it one number
- 15:56lower. The nausea decreases, any
- 16:00anxiety or worry decreases, and I want you to imagine a future
- 16:07moment that hasn't happened yet. A time when you feel a bit
- 16:14nauseous, queasy in your gut, a sensation in your stomach.
- 16:23Not big, something mild. And then imagine what you feel,
- 16:30that feeling. You breathe out slowly and
- 16:34imagine dialing down that sensation, reducing it.
- 16:41And you've done that before. You've played a video game where
- 16:46the volume was so high and you know how to turn down the
- 16:49volume. So just imagine you can turn
- 16:52down that sensation. You remember that you're not
- 16:57alone and that feeling gets less and less so that your body
- 17:04doesn't panic or escalate. And just imagine that future
- 17:10moment where you feel that you can handle it, just like you did
- 17:15in the past before that residential.
- 17:22You are not fragile, your body is strong.
- 17:27There were people around you that care, and you were learning
- 17:31to be the boss, the leader. And every time you breathe out
- 17:41long and slow, you're training your nervous system to relax and
- 17:47calm down. Every time you calm down, even
- 17:53for 10 seconds, your body can cope better than it did before
- 18:00and you don't have to feel perfect.
- 18:04You can just remember that you are supported, you are safe, you
- 18:11can handle discomfort. That's it.
- 18:16It's time to leave this place in your imagination.
- 18:19So just imagine leaving any screens or memories or ideas of
- 18:24the future and returning all the way to your present.
- 18:31Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 18:36nose. Just wiggle your fingers, wiggle
- 18:40your toes. Connect with your body right now
- 18:46as I count from 1:00 to 10:00 and you will awaken feeling
- 18:52calmer and I'm confident about the future.
- 18:58Starting to count 123 Waking up 456.
- 19:04More alert 7-8. Open your eyes.
- 19:08Open your eyes, 910. Wide awake, wide awake, wide
- 19:14awake.
