- 0:04You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast the First
- 0:06Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:09On this podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:12to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:15what God is doing in us and in our community.
- 0:18This fall, we're living in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke,
- 0:21and John and learning how to live from our model, Jesus.
- 0:25This sermon is part of our series The Gospels.
- 0:28You can find out more information about our church at

- 0:39This morning scripture is from the Gospel of John chapter 5,
- 0:46starting verse 16. So the Jewish leaders began
- 0:51harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.
- 0:54But Jesus replied, My Father is always working, and so am I.
- 1:00So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill
- 1:05him. For he not only broke the
- 1:07Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself
- 1:12equal with God. So Jesus explained, I tell you
- 1:17the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself.
- 1:20He does only what he sees the Father doing.
- 1:24Whatever the Father does, the Son does, also does.
- 1:28For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is
- 1:32doing. In fact, the Father will show
- 1:35him how to do even greater works than healing this man.
- 1:39Then you will truly be astonished.
- 1:42For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the
- 1:46dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.
- 1:50In addition, the Father judges no one.
- 1:53Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge so
- 1:58that everyone will honour the Son just as they honour the
- 2:02Father. Anyone who does not honour the
- 2:05Son is certainly not honouring the Father who sent him.
- 2:09I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe
- 2:13in God who sent me have eternal life.
- 2:17They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have
- 2:20already passed from death into life, and I assure you that the
- 2:26time is coming. Indeed, it's here now when the
- 2:30dead will hear my voice, the voice of the Son of God, and
- 2:34those who listen will live. The Father has life in himself,
- 2:39and He has granted that same life, giving power to His Son,
- 2:45and He has given Him authority to judge everyone because He is
- 2:49the Son of Man. Don't be so surprised.
- 2:53Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves
- 2:57will hear the voice of God's Son, and they will rise again.
- 3:01Those who have done goodwill rise to experience eternal life,
- 3:05and those who have continued in the evil will rise to experience
- 3:09judgment. I can do nothing on my own.
- 3:12I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just
- 3:17because I carry out the will of the One who sent me, not my own
- 3:22will. This is the word of God for the
- 3:25people of God. Thanks be to God, Amen.
- 3:31We're going to keep talking about John's Gospel.
- 3:35All right, we, we started last week in John chapter 2 and, and
- 3:40after the cleansing of the temple that we spoke last week,
- 3:42we see one of the religious leaders, right?
- 3:45If we're working our way through John, we see one of the
- 3:48religious leaders, A Pharisee, a man by the name of Nicodemus.
- 3:52He comes to Jesus at night, right, to avoid people seeing
- 3:57him talking to Jesus, right? He, he wants to go and talk to
- 4:02Jesus. He's seen what Jesus is doing.
- 4:04He's, he's actually coming to believe that Jesus has been sent
- 4:08by God. And Nicodemus has questions, but
- 4:13he doesn't want anybody to know he has questions for Jesus.
- 4:16So he goes to Jesus and I then, then Jesus and the disciples
- 4:19say, leave Jerusalem. They go out into the Judean
- 4:22wilderness near the place where John the Baptist has been
- 4:25baptizing people. And and John the Baptist at this
- 4:29point is very clear with his followers that he is not the
- 4:32Messiah. And he points them to Jesus
- 4:36right, even identifying him as the Son of God.
- 4:40They spend some time there, and after some days, Jesus and the
- 4:43disciples, they begin their journey back up to Galilee.
- 4:46But rather than than taking the road more travelled, Jesus bucks
- 4:51against the Jewish tradition of avoiding the whole region of
- 4:55Samaria. And instead he walks right
- 4:58through it. During that journey that he sits
- 5:03down at Jacob's well one day and and he has that famous
- 5:07conversation with the Samaritan woman which leads not just to
- 5:12that woman coming to believe in Jesus, but her whole village
- 5:17believed because of her testimony.
- 5:21Jesus then returns to Galilee, where people were all abuzz
- 5:27about the things that they had seen Jesus doing in Jerusalem
- 5:31around the Passover celebration. And there's a certain government
- 5:35official, right, who, who probably worked for King Herod.
- 5:40He, he lived in a bigger town just over from where Jesus was.
- 5:45And he came to Jesus begging for Jesus to come and heal his son
- 5:51before he died without ever leaving the village where he was
- 5:56to go to Capernaum where the boy was.
- 5:59Jesus heals the boy and he lives.
- 6:04And it's after this episode in the life and ministry of Jesus
- 6:08that John has Jesus returning to Jerusalem for another festival
- 6:13celebration, right? Doesn't specifically say which
- 6:17one, but, but Pentecost would make sense, right?
- 6:21As as one of the three pilgrimage festivals that that
- 6:24Jewish people were expected to go down to Jerusalem and and
- 6:29being less than two months after Passover, time wise, it kind of
- 6:33makes some sense, right? And that that two-month period,
- 6:37it's just like the church still celebrates Pentecost 50 days
- 6:41after Easter, right? So Jesus is in Jerusalem for the
- 6:46festival. He's in the city and on the
- 6:49Sabbath, and Jesus heals a man, a man who is lame.
- 6:55He couldn't walk. He tells him to get up, pick up
- 6:58his mat that he was lying on, and walk.
- 7:03When the Jewish leaders heard about it, they objected to the
- 7:07healing, not because they thought the healing was wrong,
- 7:11but because it happened on the Sabbath, right?
- 7:16They, they, they have some tension about that.
- 7:18The 7th day of each week, it was the Sabbath.
- 7:21It was set aside as a 2 fold memorial for God's people,
- 7:26right? One, because God rested from his
- 7:29work of creation on the 7th day. If you go back to Genesis, you,
- 7:33you can read that story. God did all of his creating work
- 7:37in six days and on the 7th day he rested.
- 7:40But secondly, all right, the the book of Deuteronomy tells us
- 7:44they were supposed to remember the Sabbath because their
- 7:48ancestors had been slaves in Egypt.
- 7:52They had never been given a day of rest.
- 7:57So the Sabbath was to be a day of rest, the day set aside, a
- 8:01day when no work was to be done. And so to protect people from
- 8:08breaking the Sabbath or God gave some very specific illustrations
- 8:13of what constituted work and what didn't, right.
- 8:18You're allowed to let your animals out of their pens so
- 8:22they could go and, and drink some water, but you weren't
- 8:24allowed to lead them out to pasture, those kind of things.
- 8:28But then, as we tend to do, the religious leaders wanted to make
- 8:36sure that no one accidentally broke the Sabbath, right,
- 8:40because it was breaking the covenant that led to the
- 8:44destruction of the temple and the exile for the people of
- 8:47Judah. And so the religious leaders
- 8:49made even more laws about what you could or couldn't do on the
- 8:55Sabbath, which included, you know, how far you could walk on
- 8:58the Sabbath before it became walk, before it became work.
- 9:01And things like carrying a map, carrying your bedroll couldn't
- 9:09do it. So this healing of this lame
- 9:13man, it, it brought Jesus into further conflict with the Jewish
- 9:18leaders. It had begun with the clearing
- 9:21of the temple, but now it was escalating even more.
- 9:25And then that's where our story finds us this morning.
- 9:30After this healing of the lame man, the Jewish leaders begin
- 9:35harassing Jesus. Some translations say
- 9:38persecuting Jesus, they're not happy because he's breaking the
- 9:44rules. The rules about what you could
- 9:47and couldn't do on the Sabbath. You know, part of what makes
- 9:52good religious people is that they like rules, right?
- 9:57They like feeling like they can understand the expectations.
- 10:01They know what's allowed. They know what's not allowed.
- 10:04They want to know whether they're on the inside or on the
- 10:08outside. And behavior based rules provide
- 10:12a nice little checklist to be able to know where you stand
- 10:16right now. I don't want to oversimplify the
- 10:20the motivations of of good religious people, but I hope you
- 10:25can see that this isn't just a Pharisee kind of thing right
- 10:30there. There are plenty of people today
- 10:32who are good church people. There's a temptation even today
- 10:37as we try to follow Jesus, to make our faith in God about
- 10:42behavior. Because it's easy to measure
- 10:46behaviors, or at least it's easier to measure behaviors than
- 10:49it is to measure what's happening in someone's heart.
- 10:53Now the ditch on the other side of that road is to make our
- 10:57faith in God all about beliefs, right?
- 11:01The the things we give mental assent to where we can measure
- 11:04where we or others believe the right things regardless of how
- 11:09we actually live day-to-day. The old holiness movement people
- 11:17summed up this kind of behavior based approach to discipleship
- 11:21like this. They'd say, I don't dance,
- 11:25drink, cuss or chew, and I don't run around with those who do.
- 11:30Right now, I don't know that anyone actually said that, but
- 11:34it was true enough that it became a say.
- 11:37And there's something appealing about that, right about that
- 11:42because it makes things black and white.
- 11:45Either you do or you don't. But at least part of what Jesus
- 11:53is wanting to show to the religious leaders, I think here
- 11:57in this story especially, it is that faith in God isn't
- 12:02primarily about the things we do or don't do right.
- 12:07It's not primarily about our behaviors.
- 12:09Our faith in God is primarily about the relationship we have
- 12:16with God. But that makes it a lot harder
- 12:21to judge. So Jesus's response to these
- 12:26leaders objections is that he isn't doing anything wrong
- 12:31because he's merely acting as an apprentice to his Father's work,
- 12:37right? And since God is always working,
- 12:39so is Jesus. But 1st century Jewish thought
- 12:46said that even though God modelled Sabbath rest from his
- 12:49creative work, God never actually stops working right?
- 12:54Because after creation, God's God's work is sustaining and
- 12:58governing all that he created. And so the need to observe
- 13:03Sabbath was actually one of the distinctions between God and
- 13:09humanity. It's this response that makes
- 13:15the leaders want to find a way to kill Jesus all the more,
- 13:21right? It wasn't just that Jesus was
- 13:23breaking the Sabbath and saying that he didn't have to follow
- 13:27their rules about the Sabbath. He was claiming to be God,
- 13:33right? He called God his Father.
- 13:35He wasn't just breaking the covenant.
- 13:38This was now blasphemy, and blasphemy deserved death.
- 13:47So Jesus tries to explain this all to the Jewish leaders.
- 13:50He begins by expanding on this idea of being an apprentice to
- 13:54his father, right? An idea that they all would have
- 13:56been intimately familiar with. It was the standard expectation
- 14:00that sons would follow their fathers into the family
- 14:04business, right? They'd learn the trade, whether
- 14:09it was baking or farming or even being a priest.
- 14:14Aren't you boys glad you have some choices these days?
- 14:17I'm looking at my four boys right here across the front.
- 14:22But they'd learn those, those trades, those professions by
- 14:26watching their fathers work day after day until they learned
- 14:31enough to help. And eventually they they would
- 14:34have shown a level of skill to where they would be doing the
- 14:38work. And the father would just give
- 14:40some help or correction or instruction along the way until
- 14:43they had mastered the skills of the trade.
- 14:48And this, this is the kind of relationship that Jesus is
- 14:53claiming with his Father God. Jesus said he wasn't doing
- 15:00anything on his own accord. He was simply doing what he saw
- 15:05the Father doing. In the case of this man, Jesus
- 15:09just gave him back his life because he saw God as the one
- 15:14who gives life even on the Sabbath.
- 15:21So as the story goes on in verse 20, Jesus explains that that
- 15:24this this showing and this seeing what what I think we
- 15:29could rightly call revelation, right?
- 15:31It was an expression, it was in the context of the love and
- 15:37intimacy shared between the Father and the Son Jesus.
- 15:42His own expectation was that God was going to show him even more
- 15:48how to do even more than he was already doing truly amazing and
- 15:53astonishing things. As if telling someone to get up
- 15:58and walk wasn't astonishing in and of itself.
- 16:03Right. But it's, it's almost like Jesus
- 16:04said, Oh, you're, you're amazed by this, by me telling a man to
- 16:08pick up his mat and walk. Just wait, you ain't seen
- 16:13nothing yet. And then it's in verse 21 that
- 16:20we see what I think is one of the keys to how Jesus saw his
- 16:26ministry. It says for justice, the Father
- 16:29gives life to those he raises from the dead.
- 16:32So the Son gives life to anyone he wants, right?
- 16:38If God the Father is in the business of giving life where
- 16:42there was no life even to those who were dead, then that's the
- 16:49same kind of work the Son was going to do.
- 16:51It's like when Jesus contrasted his work and the work of the
- 16:55devil in John 1010, when he said the thief comes only to steal
- 17:00and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life
- 17:06and have it abundantly right. Jesus came part of the the the
- 17:12main reason he came was so that people couldn't have and know
- 17:19abundant life. And in this passage, Jesus is
- 17:25promising that those who would listen to his message and
- 17:30believe that God is the one who sent him, they would have this
- 17:35eternal life he was talking about.
- 17:36This is the authority that the Father had bestowed on the Son,
- 17:41the authority to give life, the authority to judge.
- 17:45And and with that authority to judge, Jesus is either able to
- 17:48condemn people to continue death or raise them up to new life.
- 17:56Because you see, as part of fallen humanity, we're already
- 18:02dead, right? Paul wrote in Ephesians chapter
- 18:072 first 3 verses. He said once you were dead
- 18:11because of your disobedience and your many sins, you used to live
- 18:15in sin just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil, the
- 18:19commander of the powers in the unseen world.
- 18:22He is the Spirit at work in the hearts of those who refused to
- 18:25obey God. God, all of us used to live that
- 18:28way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our
- 18:33sinful nature. By our very nature, we were
- 18:36subject to God's wrath, His anger, just like everyone else,
- 18:44right? Because apart from Jesus, when
- 18:49we live according to the way of the world, when we are ruled by
- 18:54the lusts of our sinful nature, we are already dead.
- 19:03I think this is something we sometimes miss, right?
- 19:07We hear people raise objections to Christianity saying, well,
- 19:11how could a loving God condemn people to eternal death?
- 19:17The reality is, we're already dead.
- 19:21It's God, in his rich mercy and love, who made a way through the
- 19:26sun for us to have life. God could have just left us in
- 19:31that sinful state, condemned to death without hope in this
- 19:35world. But he didn't.
- 19:39He didn't. He came for us.
- 19:44He invites us to be raised from death to new life, not just in
- 19:50some future eternity that we enter into upon our physical
- 19:54death, but now, here in this world, in this life.
- 20:02Jesus offers us a new way to live.
- 20:07Eternal life begins. When we hear his voice and we
- 20:11listen to his message and we put our trust in Jesus, that's the
- 20:18authority that the Father has given to the to Jesus, to the
- 20:23Son. Verse 26 it says the Father has
- 20:25life in himself and has granted that same life giving power to
- 20:31his Son. More or less the same as that
- 20:38version. This is the life and
- 20:43relationship that through Jesus we have been invited into,
- 20:54right? Because while we will never be
- 20:57the Son of God in the same way that Jesus was the eternal Son
- 21:01of God, like we said in the Nicene Creed, light from light,
- 21:04true God from true God, begotten, not made, but in the
- 21:09work of Christ, we have been adopted into the family of God,
- 21:16right? We've been made sons and
- 21:18daughters of God. And by adoption, then we've been
- 21:24brought into the family business too.
- 21:27We've been entrusted with a measure of authority and a
- 21:31responsibility of bringing life to dead people.
- 21:36In John 20 and Matthew 18 and Mark 11, we read that Jesus gave
- 21:42his followers authority to bind things and loose things, to free
- 21:47things, to forgive sins and help people find life.
- 21:55But if we expect to be able to do the things that Jesus did to
- 22:00demonstrate that authority, we also have to learn to do the
- 22:05things that Jesus did to develop the intimacy with the Father
- 22:10that was the very source of all of that which supported
- 22:13everything that Jesus did. Jesus said he only did what he
- 22:18saw the Father doing. He did nothing on his own
- 22:21accord. He only did what the Father told
- 22:25him to do. Jesus learned what the Father
- 22:32wanted him to do, not just by doing the right things or by
- 22:36believing the right things. He learned them by being in this
- 22:40right relationship with God, with the Father.
- 22:45Jesus had a rhythm of life that supported this intimacy he had
- 22:51with the Father right. His times of of fasting and
- 22:54solitude and silence and prayer. His practices of reading and
- 22:59meditating on scripture, of worshipping together in
- 23:03community on the Sabbath. These practices and and others
- 23:07that they created the space for the Father to apprentice Jesus
- 23:13in the work of bringing life. So when we say that we want to
- 23:21be used by God, but we don't put ourselves in the position to be
- 23:28led by God, we don't put ourselves in the position to be
- 23:32taught by God, apprenticed by God.
- 23:35We're not serious about a relationship with God, we just
- 23:42want the power of God without the surrender to God that we see
- 23:48in the life of Jesus. The religious leaders were upset
- 23:56because they felt like Jesus was making himself equal with God.
- 24:04The reality is that Jesus never felt that his equality with God
- 24:08was something to be grasped, something to be held on to and
- 24:12used for his own benefit. Jesus says equality with God
- 24:18never meant for him. Independence from God or Jesus
- 24:24lived in complete surrender to the Father, even though the
- 24:28Father had bestowed all authority to him.
- 24:35And so I think before we get to the end of this series in the
- 24:39Gospels, which isn't this week but it's next week, this series
- 24:45in which we've been looking at what we learn from Jesus's life,
- 24:50about what it means to live like him.
- 24:56I think we have to get honest with ourselves about where we
- 25:01are with Jesus. Maybe this morning or or
- 25:07somewhere over the course of this series, you realize that
- 25:12you you thought you were following Jesus, but you've
- 25:17never actually received this gift of life that he offers.
- 25:23You can do that this morning. You can confess to Jesus that
- 25:28that you have still been living according to the ways of this
- 25:32world, but now you've heard his voice and you believe that God
- 25:36sent him and that he is the source of life.
- 25:41And if that's you this morning, God longs to raise you from
- 25:44death to life. He can do that this morning.
- 25:51But maybe this morning or over the course of this series
- 25:55somewhere, as we've heard these stories about Jesus and his
- 26:01interactions with these Jewish leaders, maybe you've realized
- 26:04that you thought you were following Jesus, but you've
- 26:09actually been living as a good church person, a good religious
- 26:16person. You haven't really known the
- 26:20kind of intimacy with God which leads to abundant life that
- 26:25Jesus talks about. You can acknowledge that this
- 26:30morning to Jesus. You can decide to to turn toward
- 26:35him, to lean into him, to lean the full weight of of your being
- 26:42on him, trusting that he will receive you with open arms as a
- 26:47son or daughter. But maybe this morning or
- 26:55somewhere over the course of the series, you've heard the stories
- 27:00of Jesus, our example of of what is possible in a human life,
- 27:06surrendered to the Father and empowered by the Spirit.
- 27:11And it's stirred a longing in your heart, a longing for for
- 27:17that to be true in your own life, that you long to see more
- 27:23of what God is able to do in and through your own life.
- 27:29Friends, he's a good father and I think he longs to give us
- 27:35those gifts. He he wants that intimacy, too.
- 27:39He wants to show you, to reveal to you where he's working, what
- 27:44he's doing, and how he wants to use you to bring the dead to
- 27:50life. I think he's waiting for you to
- 27:54ask. He wants you to ask and he wants
- 28:01to teach you to apprentice you to, to show you how to do it.
- 28:08So if this morning you sense God speaking to you, don't miss him.
- 28:19Don't worry what other people might think.
- 28:21Don't second guess whether or not you're you're really hearing
- 28:25from him. Remember, Jesus said those who
- 28:28listen will live. He's offering life, abundant
- 28:36life this morning. So if he's speaking to you this
- 28:41morning, respond the altar. It isn't magical.
- 28:46God doesn't live at this wooden rail somehow more than he does
- 28:51anywhere else. But there is something about
- 28:54responding with everything that you are, Not just your mind, not
- 29:00just your heart, not just your spirit, but joining even your
- 29:04body into your response to what God is doing.
- 29:08If He's speaking to you, come meet him this morning at the
- 29:14altar, or stand where you are, or turn around and make your Pew
- 29:18an altar. But let's not miss His voice
- 29:24this morning because He's speaking and if we'll listen, we
- 29:30will find that life that He's talking about that is truly
- 29:35life. Would you pray with me this
- 29:38morning? Jesus?
- 29:45We are so grateful that you are the God of life and that your
- 29:51offer to us isn't just more rules and regulations and
- 29:56obligations. Your offer to us is intimacy and
- 30:01life. You want to adopt us into your
