- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey everyone out there, This is Clint from the Butterfly Effect,
- 0:03Speaker 1: just popped in to talk about the twenty one year
- 0:05Speaker 1: anniversary of our first album Begins Here, was kicking off
- 0:11Speaker 1: a national tour. I think it's the end of January,
- 0:14Speaker 1: isn't it in Canas. It's going to be crazy. It's
- 0:16Speaker 1: going to be taking in the length and the breadth
- 0:18Speaker 1: of the country. Check your socials for tour dates and
- 0:23Speaker 1: grab some tickets from the Butterfly Effect band dot com
- 0:26Speaker 1: and we will catch you somewhere along the road.
- 0:30Speaker 2: That almost sound a professional well done.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Of practice, let me tell you.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And I made always a pleasure catching up mane.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I love to be here.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's the place where I can let my hand down
- 0:40Speaker 1: literally and you know, talk the talk without walking the walk.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Oh anyway, So Butterfly Effect keep the party going in
- 0:50Speaker 4: twenty twenty five, hitting the road from January to thirtieth
- 0:53Speaker 4: for the twenty five date twenty one years and Begins
- 0:56Speaker 4: Here Regional Tour twenty twenty five.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Like it's a lot of shows made.
- 1:00Speaker 4: I thought you would have learned your lesson after the
- 1:01Speaker 4: Capital City twenty years to beginning here right early?
- 1:04Speaker 1: It is, Yeah, mate, I know I'm a sucker for punishment.
- 1:07Speaker 1: And what can I tell you? My bloody drama keeps
- 1:09Speaker 1: booking booking gigs, and I keep saying, and man, how
- 1:12Speaker 1: old do you think I am.
- 1:13Speaker 3: We're bloody round.
- 1:15Speaker 1: In the bend for fifty and I must say we're
- 1:17Speaker 1: looking very good for fifty. But yeah, thank you very much.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I'll be here all night, yeah mate. Yeah, it's amazing though.
- 1:25Speaker 1: But you know what the I'm going to need. I've
- 1:27Speaker 1: got to be honest with you, after this, toyear, I'm
- 1:29Speaker 1: going to need the whole rest of the year to
- 1:31Speaker 1: have off to recover. But apparently I've just got my
- 1:34Speaker 1: car back from the mechanics and I've got to do
- 1:36Speaker 1: a little bit of work to it. So you know,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm going to be going to have a kissing booth
- 1:41Speaker 1: off the side, you know, and.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Some extra dollars.
- 1:46Speaker 4: The hair.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Come and get down there. That's good, yeah mate. But
- 1:51Speaker 1: we're all really stoked, we're all really excited. Everyone's starting
- 1:55Speaker 1: to you know, ramp up to it. We're talking about
- 1:57Speaker 1: getting fit and healthy as a group. You know, you
- 2:00Speaker 1: have to these days. It used to be you know,
- 2:03Speaker 1: late nights and partying till you drop sort of thing,
- 2:06Speaker 1: But yeah, we.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Can't really do that anymore. It's it's the next day
- 2:10Speaker 3: that gets you.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We can still do it, but it's the next day
- 2:14Speaker 1: nos longer recovered on that. We're on about a three
- 2:17Speaker 1: or four day stretch.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Now it's tolerable.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So I'm sure there's a lot of people out there
- 2:21Speaker 1: that can sympathize, but there will be people out there going.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Oh, what's wrong with you?
- 2:25Speaker 1: You're bloody pussy. Yes, but you try jumping around for
- 2:29Speaker 1: an hour and a half and screaming your tits off
- 2:31Speaker 1: and then going and you know, partying the next day.
- 2:34Speaker 3: That's it's so good.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Well, I like we're you're headed with this too, bro,
- 2:39Speaker 4: Like the twenty years it begins that you saw this
- 2:41Speaker 4: year ago, the twenty one years, it begins to your
- 2:43Speaker 4: next year. So you can keep milk on this until
- 2:45Speaker 4: the fifty that ambursery begins to you throw if you
- 2:48Speaker 4: really want.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It, oh one hundred percent.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Well that's it's it's going to be the tour
- 2:54Speaker 1: that never ends. And yeah, yeah, we'll just keep going
- 2:57Speaker 1: around around until no one comes, when no one comes
- 3:00Speaker 1: to the shows anymore, and then we'll retired disgracefully. But
- 3:06Speaker 1: it's kind of going back to grassroots, and this is
- 3:08Speaker 1: what we wanted to do. We wanted to say a
- 3:10Speaker 1: massive thank you to all the fans out there that
- 3:12Speaker 1: might not be able to get to cities. But also
- 3:15Speaker 1: we had lots of people saying to us, how come
- 3:16Speaker 1: you guys don't do regional runs anymore?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Well, here we are.
- 3:19Speaker 1: We're basically recreating one of the runs that we did
- 3:23Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three, more or less. But we threw
- 3:25Speaker 1: it to the crowd and the fans and said, where
- 3:28Speaker 1: do you want to see us play because we might
- 3:30Speaker 1: have missed a place or not thought about a place
- 3:32Speaker 1: for ages, to which you know, there was enough sort
- 3:35Speaker 1: of people throwing their hat into the ring saying hey,
- 3:38Speaker 1: come out here and.
- 3:38Speaker 3: We'll support you.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So that's kind of the way we went about it,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and I think it was a great idea. And yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 1: we just we really want to get back to that grassroots,
- 3:49Speaker 1: you know, just playing in front of fans that have
- 3:51Speaker 1: been with us from the get go.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Good on you, bro.
- 3:54Speaker 4: So the twenty year old sure did wrap up this
- 3:56Speaker 4: year in February. So how was that run of shows?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Yeah was amazing. Yeah, it was really good.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So I think everyone always has a favorite show, and
- 4:04Speaker 1: none of us can really agree on which one it
- 4:06Speaker 1: was because for some strange reason, we can never we
- 4:10Speaker 1: never really seem to all gel or play, you know,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that massive show at the same time. It's bizarre, but
- 4:17Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of bands out there can totally
- 4:19Speaker 1: relate for this next run. Yeah, so that's the thing.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Like everyone had a favorite show. One person was Sydney.
- 4:25Speaker 1: To our person was like second show Melbourne. Mine might
- 4:28Speaker 1: have been like, you know, the second Brisbane show, whatever, whatever,
- 4:31Speaker 1: But that was amazing coming off that run, the energy
- 4:34Speaker 1: that we were feeling coming off that, and everyone was like,
- 4:37Speaker 1: do you want to go back out and do a
- 4:39Speaker 1: big run? And everyone was like, hell, yeah, let's go.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So that was good.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And then it all just really fell together quite quite
- 4:46Speaker 1: organically because Benny just pretty muchly put out the word
- 4:49Speaker 1: and yeah, and then we started the crowd you know,
- 4:53Speaker 1: sourcing thing where we just threw it to the people
- 4:55Speaker 1: to tell us where they want to come, and it
- 4:57Speaker 1: was the response was excellent on being.
- 5:00Speaker 4: A regional tool, like are you going to be scaling
- 5:02Speaker 4: back things production wise a bit or are the regional
- 5:05Speaker 4: guys getting the same as a big.
- 5:06Speaker 1: City Oh no, that's a good question. No, we we
- 5:09Speaker 1: did have to scale it back a little bit, just
- 5:10Speaker 1: purely because of the size of stages that we're going
- 5:13Speaker 1: to be playing on. Unfortunately, we got to we can't
- 5:18Speaker 1: drag that big, bloody screen with us because I don't
- 5:21Speaker 1: think it's going to fit on a few stages. So
- 5:24Speaker 1: we're just going to take it back to the rock
- 5:26Speaker 1: show and literally recreate a sort of that ferocity and
- 5:32Speaker 1: intensity that we had, like, you know, twenty one years
- 5:35Speaker 1: ago essentially, which I think is really cool because when
- 5:38Speaker 1: we toured with she had they told us that they
- 5:40Speaker 1: did we were doing the same thing, and we're like, man,
- 5:42Speaker 1: that's really cool. So that's that kind of feeling, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 1: it teleports you back to that time, and it's just
- 5:48Speaker 1: going to be a dirty, smelly, sweaty, energetic, balls to
- 5:51Speaker 1: the wall rock show and the way it should be
- 5:54Speaker 1: done on.
- 5:55Speaker 2: The way it's not done very often these days.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Well, last time we spoke was before the first run
- 6:02Speaker 4: of shows, and we discussed the difficulties to playing a
- 6:05Speaker 4: whole album back to back because he didn't really ride
- 6:08Speaker 4: it with that in mind when you started. So, were
- 6:10Speaker 4: there any songs Aventure that just didn't fucking didn't work
- 6:14Speaker 4: for you, like they were too hard.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Oh no, Actually it's interesting because yeah, you would think
- 6:19Speaker 1: that we kind of had that trepidation where we were like, oh,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, which song you know, is this going to work?
- 6:25Speaker 3: That going to work?
- 6:26Speaker 1: But you know, you always zig when you when you
- 6:30Speaker 1: need a zag sort of thing. But funnily enough, we
- 6:33Speaker 1: we stumbled onto doing the acoustic version of Overwhelmed, which
- 6:36Speaker 1: worked really well. And it's that moment in the set
- 6:39Speaker 1: everyone gets to sort of, you know, take a breath.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's not really loud, we sort of draw the crowd in.
- 6:44Speaker 1: So no, there was I think we've tailored it pretty
- 6:47Speaker 1: much to the way the band plays now and what
- 6:49Speaker 1: we could do. But also these days with Bloody, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 1: we've we've got a thousand musos and a box up
- 6:55Speaker 1: the back, and we've got all the you know, the
- 6:57Speaker 1: orchestra tracks and stuff like, you know, just just basically
- 7:00Speaker 1: and stuff which just fills out the sound, which is
- 7:02Speaker 1: lovely and that works really well.
- 7:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:06Speaker 1: We've also we're taking a keyboard player. Actually, I'm just
- 7:10Speaker 1: wondering if we're taking a keyboard player and tell us.
- 7:12Speaker 2: With this.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Dude, ah man that's always the way, and bloody, no
- 7:18Speaker 1: one tells me anything. They just keep me in the
- 7:20Speaker 1: dark and keep feeding me bullshit.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm not even going to comment on that.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Back back when begins here, it came out bro like
- 7:29Speaker 4: always one Second of Insanity, Beautiful Mind and Pray were
- 7:33Speaker 4: probably the best relentus, even the most popular ones. But
- 7:36Speaker 4: did you find on this run, like two decades on,
- 7:38Speaker 4: that people were connecting with different songs from the album.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good question.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I think, you know, I think that our whole, the
- 7:45Speaker 1: album as a whole, has always connected with those people
- 7:48Speaker 1: that loved it, do you know what I mean? For me, though,
- 7:51Speaker 1: things have certainly changed, Like it used to be like
- 7:54Speaker 1: perception tween and one second, we're all the big bangers,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I want to be as
- 7:57Speaker 1: loud and as raucous and as out there as we
- 8:00Speaker 1: could possibly be, always stuff like that. But now it's
- 8:03Speaker 1: becoming about more so the nuance and the and the
- 8:06Speaker 1: dark beauty inside Beautiful Mind. So that's that's become a
- 8:12Speaker 1: real crowd favorite. And but also for me, it's a
- 8:15Speaker 1: it's a really nice moment in the set when we
- 8:17Speaker 1: play it, because we break it down to just keys
- 8:19Speaker 1: Cello and myself, but also I'm like finding, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 1: little bits of other songs, like the middle section of
- 8:25Speaker 1: Feeling Silence for instances like really tickling me every night.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I love getting to that section.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and just Ad that was that was a sleeper.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I'd kind of forgotten about that song until we took
- 8:36Speaker 1: it out on the road or even started practicing it,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and then I was like, oh, man, this is a
- 8:40Speaker 1: really good song. Yeah, so we're man, it's almost like
- 8:45Speaker 1: we're getting to relive the energy and the excitement we
- 8:49Speaker 1: felt through these songs when we first wrote them.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I chucked on begins here and how to listen to
- 8:56Speaker 4: while I was writing these questions made and I've forgotten
- 8:58Speaker 4: what a fucking good album it is. Like it improves
- 9:01Speaker 4: a theory that good music is timeless, no matter when
- 9:03Speaker 4: it was made.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent. It's got a darkness to it.
- 9:06Speaker 1: It's got this mood and energy on it, and it's
- 9:09Speaker 1: this kind of thing that I explains it's in between,
- 9:12Speaker 1: like when you look at the wave files of all
- 9:14Speaker 1: of the music, there's this kind of negative space in between,
- 9:17Speaker 1: and there's something very interesting that happens on this album,
- 9:20Speaker 1: especially that fills in those gaps. It's almost like you
- 9:23Speaker 1: can hear through the slices of it where the instruments sit,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and there's this kind of mood and this vibration that happens.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Not to get too crazy out there, but it's amazing
- 9:32Speaker 1: to me that the album still holds up and lyrically,
- 9:36Speaker 1: it's still my favorite album that we've written. And I
- 9:39Speaker 1: just think it was going back to what I said
- 9:41Speaker 1: at the start. It was four fearless young men in
- 9:46Speaker 1: a room, all pushing in the one direction. This is like,
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know, before the in fighting sort of started, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: before the relationships started to break down to a point
- 9:54Speaker 1: where you know, it was hard to write together. But
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know, like Kirk could have walked into the room
- 10:00Speaker 1: with any kind of riff and I would have gone, bang,
- 10:02Speaker 1: here it is, let's go, and it would have been
- 10:04Speaker 1: amazing to me. And that's what I was talking about earlier.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I was saying, bands that are genuine and stay true
- 10:11Speaker 1: to themselves and right for themselves will last longer than
- 10:16Speaker 1: bands that are trying to catch the commercial dollar, because
- 10:18Speaker 1: that's fraudulent, like you're not your authentic self. And that's
- 10:22Speaker 1: my advice to any young music out there, Be fearless,
- 10:25Speaker 1: be yourself right the way you want to write, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: do it your way, because if you hit the jackpot
- 10:31Speaker 1: and you get there, like you will be a better
- 10:33Speaker 1: version of yourself, a truer version of yourself.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Because of that fan classic Raynond And you actually bring
- 10:40Speaker 2: up a good point earlier on in that too, like
- 10:42Speaker 2: it's gonna look like we've worked these questions out in
- 10:44Speaker 2: advance because you give me the perfect segue.
- 10:46Speaker 4: But the one thing that really stood out for me
- 10:49Speaker 4: begins here was how much you actually let the songs
- 10:52Speaker 4: breathe like I got good friend of mine once told
- 10:54Speaker 4: me that it's not what you put into a song,
- 10:56Speaker 4: it's what you leave out of it. And it took
- 10:58Speaker 4: me fucking ages actually stand what he meant.
- 11:00Speaker 2: But when you.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Listen to an album that begins here, you sort of
- 11:05Speaker 4: don't realize how how ruster or how forced music is
- 11:08Speaker 4: these days, because too many bands try and put everything
- 11:10Speaker 4: into one song and they destroy the soul of it.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And then you know what, It's interesting that when Richard
- 11:17Speaker 1: Kingsmill from Triple J first heard our stuff, he said,
- 11:21Speaker 1: there is a there is something about it. It's what
- 11:25Speaker 1: we haven't put into it, and that struck me. And
- 11:27Speaker 1: it's interesting that you say that because so I have
- 11:30Speaker 1: not thought about that comment for twenty yeears, which is amazing,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and I thank you for bringing that back up, because yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: it really is.
- 11:39Speaker 3: It's about what you know.
- 11:40Speaker 1: You don't have to pack it with everything, and you're right,
- 11:43Speaker 1: begins Here has and that's what I was talking about,
- 11:46Speaker 1: that negative space.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It's the musical glue.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It's what's not there that is actually creating that depth.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And it's and it breathes.
- 11:54Speaker 1: The album breathes because you can it can punch you
- 11:56Speaker 1: in the face and keep stomping you and then.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Let off and you whoa. You know what I mean.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So that's and you don't get that with.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Many albums like Anywhere there's you know, and you're write
- 12:06Speaker 1: about timeless albums. For me, I think begins Here has
- 12:10Speaker 1: always been that album I can listen to anytime, and
- 12:13Speaker 1: I do. I listened to benz Here at least once
- 12:15Speaker 1: a year to remind myself what I was doing before
- 12:19Speaker 1: my memory goes fully. But it's it's it is actually
- 12:24Speaker 1: for me. It's a very beautiful album and the way
- 12:26Speaker 1: it's sequenced as well, the way it moves through it,
- 12:28Speaker 1: you know, it's various phases, is excellent.
- 12:32Speaker 4: And I also found out something else to do some
- 12:34Speaker 4: research tod a too bro like. I always assumed that
- 12:37Speaker 4: you're in butterfly effect from the very beginning, but that's
- 12:40Speaker 4: not the case.
- 12:41Speaker 2: You're a ringing.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I was the second singer. Yeah, I was the second
- 12:45Speaker 1: singer on the Grassy Nol Lookout.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 1: So look, I was just really lucky because I moved
- 12:52Speaker 1: into a sharehouse and new farm with a guy from
- 12:55Speaker 1: West Ozzie who knew Kim from Dead Letter before they
- 12:57Speaker 1: were dead Letter, and he said to me, he goes, oh, man,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I've got this muso friend. Because I started singing around
- 13:02Speaker 1: the house playing guitar whatever, and he said, man, I've
- 13:04Speaker 1: got this muso friend. You might you know, you guys
- 13:07Speaker 1: might click. And Kim came over and we became fast friends.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And he said, he goes, oh.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I did.
- 13:12Speaker 1: We're a practice in this practice room on Adelaide Street
- 13:14Speaker 1: in Brisbane with this band that you might be looking
- 13:17Speaker 1: for a singer. And I was like, cool, man, I'll
- 13:19Speaker 1: come and light hang out. And it was yeah, it
- 13:22Speaker 1: was the guys, and they gave me a demo tape
- 13:25Speaker 1: and and off we went and the rest, as they
- 13:27Speaker 1: say as history.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I know that is mate.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So after I suppose the Butterfly Effect going to be
- 13:33Speaker 4: one of those nostalgic bands for now to just continue
- 13:36Speaker 4: to try the older material because.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's so good, or you plan to keep it, or
- 13:39Speaker 2: listening to new music movingboard.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you we're going to try some new music.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I really want to go sort of into a more anthemic,
- 13:49Speaker 1: like a more like a bigger vibe, kind of like
- 13:51Speaker 1: World's on Fire. I'd like to write sort of big,
- 13:53Speaker 1: sort of six seven minute epics. That's where I would
- 13:56Speaker 1: like to take it, because I'm just thinking, man, we're
- 13:58Speaker 1: not a commercial rock band. Who cares about that shit anymore? Anyway,
- 14:02Speaker 1: Let's right go back to what we want to write.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Not that we've ever really written for commercial radio.
- 14:07Speaker 1: It just didn't work for us, and and case and point.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Everyone thought we were metal. And it's like I had
- 14:12Speaker 1: an argument with music director from a big commercial radio
- 14:17Speaker 1: station because he said, you guys are too metal for
- 14:19Speaker 1: our format, and I was like, are you are you kidding?
- 14:22Speaker 1: I was like, and and case and point that that
- 14:25Speaker 1: radio station now plays a lot of music that sounds
- 14:28Speaker 1: a lot heavier than us.
- 14:30Speaker 3: So there you go. So there you go. So you
- 14:33Speaker 3: know what, and I you know what.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I respect everyone's right to think what they want. But
- 14:37Speaker 1: it is I've always been saying this, it's a little
- 14:40Speaker 1: bit sad that that commercial radio station doesn't sort of
- 14:42Speaker 1: champion more Aussie bands during the listening hours from six
- 14:48Speaker 1: am to six pm. And you can shove all the
- 14:51Speaker 1: Aussi music you want up between twelve and five o'clock
- 14:54Speaker 1: in the morning.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Mate, It's not going to make a lick at difference.
- 14:57Speaker 3: So you know that's that's my contention.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I'll run with that, bro.
- 15:01Speaker 4: So before we let you go, I've started a new
- 15:04Speaker 4: segment with Heavy. So before we speak, I actually troll
