2:26
Speaker 5: Kenan County Commission President Ben Selango. How you doing, my friend?
2:28
Speaker 5: Good morning, doing well? How much stuff? I am doing fine?
2:31
Speaker 5: Thank you for being here. Quick story that I mentioned yesterday,
2:35
Speaker 5: I thought, Ben, that was kind of funny. Someone incorrectly
2:39
Speaker 5: stated on the Metro News social media page that you
2:42
Speaker 5: were the owner of Metro News. So you're saying, now
2:46
Speaker 5: that's not the case. You mean someone posted something on
2:49
Speaker 5: social media that isn't true. Well, impossible, It has never happened.
2:54
Speaker 5: It happens from time to.
2:55
Speaker 6: I'm not the owner, but I did. When you said
2:57
Speaker 6: that to me, my response was, I'm giving all of
3:00
Speaker 6: my Metro News employees a fifty percent pay raise, except
3:04
Speaker 6: I have no Metro News employees.
3:06
Speaker 5: So it's it's a good idea in theory. Now, it
3:08
Speaker 5: was a mistake somebody made that. They they thought that
3:11
Speaker 5: the that you are the owner.
3:13
Speaker 6: I used to be a shareholder in HD Media, and
3:15
Speaker 6: I think that was the confusion. And then when I
3:17
Speaker 6: ran for governor in twenty nineteen, I divested of my shares.
3:21
Speaker 5: So you had enough of media and that's a few
3:23
Speaker 5: short years, right, Yeah.
3:24
Speaker 6: Yeah, Well, you know, my growing up, my parents had
3:26
Speaker 6: a little small They had this little advertising paper down
3:29
Speaker 6: in Rowley County covered all the southern West Virginia, and
3:31
Speaker 6: so yeah, they used to my mom used to type
3:34
Speaker 6: that up on a type like back in the day
3:36
Speaker 6: before their computer. She would type it up on a
3:37
Speaker 6: typewriter and then we would just basically copy it and
3:41
Speaker 6: then circulated all over southern West Virginia. So I was
3:44
Speaker 6: I was involved in that, you know, long before. I
3:48
Speaker 6: used to go and deliver papers and do all that
3:50
Speaker 6: when I was you know, seven years old, all right,
3:53
Speaker 6: and you had enough of it then you said I
3:54
Speaker 6: was doing with this and I'm not doing this ever.
3:56
Speaker 5: Ain. Okay, they're working on the lights in the studio here,
3:59
Speaker 5: just so you know, I mean people at home, it
4:02
Speaker 5: doesn't affect at all. But just so you know, Benzelango
4:05
Speaker 5: is completely in the dark. I'm always in the dark,
4:07
Speaker 5: but you're really in the dark right now. I'm going
4:10
Speaker 5: to presume that you're over there. I'm here some way,
4:12
Speaker 5: all right. So, uh, I did want to have a
4:18
Speaker 5: little fun with that. And also I didn't want to
4:20
Speaker 5: bring up the fact that Sunday was brutal for US
4:22
Speaker 5: Cowboys fans, was it not? You know, the know the
4:25
Speaker 5: bad part about football.
4:26
Speaker 6: So I'm a w Mountaineer fan, and I went to
4:28
Speaker 6: school there undergrad in law school, and then I'm a
4:30
Speaker 6: Cowboys fan. And so you go the week before W
4:34
Speaker 6: beats Pitt, the Cowboys beat the Giants, and I'm having
4:38
Speaker 6: a great week, like I could not be in a
4:40
Speaker 6: better mood. And then fast forward and the Mountaineers lose
4:44
Speaker 6: and the Cowboys lose. So it's it's tough to be
4:48
Speaker 6: a Cowboy and a Mountaineer fan.
4:49
Speaker 5: Well, here's what I would suggest to you. Instead of
4:51
Speaker 5: buying Metro News, how about you buy the Cowboys a
4:54
Speaker 5: secondary That would be really good because that one pass
4:57
Speaker 5: and you and I were texting during the game about
4:59
Speaker 5: this one pass that Caleb Williamshore on the fleet flicker,
5:02
Speaker 5: which I think was in the second quarter, got caught
5:04
Speaker 5: it out of there like a punt return. I mean
5:06
Speaker 5: it was like he was just standing around waiting on it.
5:08
Speaker 5: I mean there was nobody within like the thirty yards
5:12
Speaker 5: of him. And that's the kind of that's the kind
5:13
Speaker 5: of balls that players drop because it is so easy.
5:16
Speaker 5: I think I could have run that route. I mean
5:18
Speaker 5: it now, CD, he's going to be out four to
5:20
Speaker 5: six weeks and so on and so forth. Sertainly, Yeah,
5:22
Speaker 5: it's not it's not going to be a good it's
5:24
Speaker 5: not going to be a good season. All right, Let's
5:26
Speaker 5: talk to something, talk about something a little bit more
5:28
Speaker 5: positive politics, No boy, no, uh no, Actually I did
5:31
Speaker 5: want to ask you. There's something that I've heard a
5:34
Speaker 5: little bit about the Canawa County Law Enforcement Training Center.
5:37
Speaker 5: So you're saying I might finally get that opportunity to
5:40
Speaker 5: be a cop, now, yeah, well we hope. So I'd
5:43
Speaker 5: love you to go out there and try it. If
5:44
Speaker 5: it's a fifty five year old cops, there's a big
5:47
Speaker 5: market for them. Hey, if you can need the job.
5:50
Speaker 6: So the so what we've done, we've been working on
5:52
Speaker 6: this for a couple of years, you know, commission Wheeler
5:53
Speaker 6: and I now Commissioner Tenant, and we've been working with
5:56
Speaker 6: Sheriff Crawford.
5:57
Speaker 7: Uh.
5:58
Speaker 6: Right now, the shooting range at Camp can Vergel Tate
6:01
Speaker 6: is in disrepair. In fact, I think it's it's probably
6:05
Speaker 6: unsafe parts of it because there's a slip that's happening.
6:09
Speaker 6: So you've got part of the shooting range it's kind
6:10
Speaker 6: of falling over the hill. Not a good idea to,
6:13
Speaker 6: you know, have weapons and slide over hill gun but
6:16
Speaker 6: what could go wrong? So we've been looking at creating
6:20
Speaker 6: a new it's gonna be more than a shooting range.
6:22
Speaker 6: We're gonna call the the Kenaw County Law Enforcement Training
6:24
Speaker 6: Center because there's a lot more than just target practice
6:27
Speaker 6: that goes on out there. So we are going in.
6:29
Speaker 6: We're gonna vote on this Thursday. I'm very optimistic that
6:32
Speaker 6: it will pass. It's gonna be about a two million
6:34
Speaker 6: dollar facility and it's gonna have a three hundred yard
6:38
Speaker 6: long gun range.
6:40
Speaker 5: Right now, we're.
6:40
Speaker 6: Captain about one hundred two hundred and fifty yards, So
6:43
Speaker 6: we're gonna put in a three hundred yard long gun
6:45
Speaker 6: range and we're gonna put in a covered not completely indoor,
6:48
Speaker 6: but a covered pistol range and also where our deputies
6:53
Speaker 6: and another other law enforced maage that can go out
6:55
Speaker 6: and train in real type scenarios. We're gonna we'll bring
6:59
Speaker 6: cars out. We actually do have a car out there
7:02
Speaker 6: now and we substitute the windshields out, so you've got
7:04
Speaker 6: they will train shooting from outside into a car and
7:08
Speaker 6: from inside the car. You know, sometimes these deputies have
7:11
Speaker 6: to in law enforce, have to shoot the inside their
7:12
Speaker 6: own car. Yeah, that changes the tradectory of the bullets.
7:15
Speaker 6: That changes everything. So they practice it. And we've got
7:18
Speaker 6: a we've got a contractor in agreement with a local
7:20
Speaker 6: windshield company. When they replace a windshield and there's a crack,
7:23
Speaker 6: they bring it over and we put it into the
7:26
Speaker 6: car and that's how they train. We'll be able to
7:28
Speaker 6: do that in a covered setting. Now it's going to
7:31
Speaker 6: be a lot better. So we'll be able to have
7:34
Speaker 6: more agencies training. We've got about forty two agencies. People
7:38
Speaker 6: don't know this, like agencies from all over the Kinwall
7:41
Speaker 6: County to train the FBI trains there. I'm looking at
7:43
Speaker 6: the news now, Ice, you know, got some issues.
7:45
Speaker 5: Ice right now. They train there.
7:47
Speaker 6: We've got a lot of agencies that come out there,
7:49
Speaker 6: a lot of municipalities come out. So this is this
7:52
Speaker 6: is going to be great. We're going to have it's
7:54
Speaker 6: going to be an upgraded facility and part of it
7:57
Speaker 6: will be covered uh. And that's the that's what's going
8:00
Speaker 6: to be on the agenda, and you're going to vote
8:02
Speaker 6: on this on Thursday night. Will vote on Thursday, and
8:04
Speaker 6: we think it's gonna be about two million dollars. We're
8:06
Speaker 6: hoping that we're hoping that we can avoid as many
8:11
Speaker 6: uh to put it in the new parts in the
8:13
Speaker 6: places that where there aren't slips. Okay, because anytime you
8:17
Speaker 6: start dealing with uh, you know, retaining walls and concrete
8:21
Speaker 6: to a certain extent on that price goes way up.
8:23
Speaker 6: But it is you know, that area does get a
8:25
Speaker 6: lot of water. It's kind of in a valley, so
8:27
Speaker 6: you're gonna have to deal with that. But that's that's
8:29
Speaker 6: what we're looking.
8:30
Speaker 5: And explain exactly where it is again in case people
8:32
Speaker 5: to dem.
8:32
Speaker 6: Virgil tastes currently at the at the shooting range, you know,
8:35
Speaker 6: they go out there and they train for different scenarios.
8:38
Speaker 6: We have a I call it a house, but it's
8:40
Speaker 6: not really a house. It's like, you know, a concrete
8:42
Speaker 6: structure that has rooms insides. So law enforcement can go
8:46
Speaker 6: and train as if they're inside of a house. And
8:48
Speaker 6: one of the things that I am hoping to do
8:52
Speaker 6: is maybe at some point we can open up certain
8:54
Speaker 6: times to the public, like for paintball or for youth
9:00
Speaker 6: training classes. I'd love to be able to have some
9:02
Speaker 6: of the law enforcement train kids on proper shooting technique,
9:06
Speaker 6: proper handling of weapons, you know, the things that you know.
9:10
Speaker 6: I grew up my dad teaching me. You know, you
9:13
Speaker 6: never point a gun, you know, always pointed in a
9:14
Speaker 6: safe direction, those types of things. You only shoot when
9:16
Speaker 6: you know exactly what you shoot, those types of things.
9:18
Speaker 6: Maybe we can do that at this facility. I can't
9:21
Speaker 6: tell it'll do our schools.
9:23
Speaker 5: And again I'm I don't have kids, so I'm kind
9:25
Speaker 5: of ignorant on this.
9:26
Speaker 8: Do it.
9:26
Speaker 5: Do our schools have shooting teams? I mean because I
9:29
Speaker 5: know some schools do I know?
9:30
Speaker 6: And I think there are archery teams, but aware of
9:34
Speaker 6: you know, Western University obviously, well they're one of the
9:36
Speaker 6: best in the in the nation. Year after year won
9:38
Speaker 6: the national championship again, I think like twenty years or something.
9:41
Speaker 5: We want it. But could this be a facility, Commissioner,
9:44
Speaker 5: Could this be a facility that maybe you mentioned the
9:46
Speaker 5: WVU rifle program that maybe they could have a meet
9:50
Speaker 5: oh down there at some point.
9:52
Speaker 6: I think at the three hundred yard level in particular,
9:54
Speaker 6: we'll be able to do things like that. And I'm
9:56
Speaker 6: not familiar with you know, that's that's like a different level. Sure, yeah,
10:00
Speaker 6: I go out, you know, I typically go down to
10:02
Speaker 6: Knaw State Forest and shoot. But this is this is
10:05
Speaker 6: something that I think will bring other agencies in to
10:10
Speaker 6: stay in Kanaw County and train there. But I also
10:14
Speaker 6: want to do everything we can to make it more
10:16
Speaker 6: accessible to the public. I mean, obviously we can have
10:19
Speaker 6: I don't want law enforcement out their training while the publicsher. Yeah,
10:22
Speaker 6: but we want to be able to try to open
10:24
Speaker 6: this up to the extent we can so people can
10:27
Speaker 6: come out. Particularly I want to focus on training youth.
10:31
Speaker 5: So if the Commission passes this on Thursday evening and
10:36
Speaker 5: during the meeting, you're very hopeful that that will be passed.
10:38
Speaker 5: Do you have any idea of a time frame yet?
10:41
Speaker 6: I mean, well, lsely, Yeah, the first thing we'll do
10:43
Speaker 6: is we'll get a We'll get a very comprehensive design together.
10:46
Speaker 6: I mean, I kind of we we know generally what
10:49
Speaker 6: it's going to look like in our heads, but we
10:50
Speaker 6: want to make sure that that smarter people than us
10:52
Speaker 6: go in and do the design. And then we'll need
10:57
Speaker 6: some We'll need to clear you know, about three hundred
10:59
Speaker 6: yards for the new long gun range, and I think
11:03
Speaker 6: that that's going to take a little bit of time,
11:04
Speaker 6: but my goal is to have it done within a year.
11:07
Speaker 6: We have the fund set aside. Obviously, we're going to
11:09
Speaker 6: apply for some grants because we've got a lot of
11:11
Speaker 6: federal agencies that use this facility.
11:13
Speaker 5: Hopefully they'll be willing to chip in. Uh So, I mean,
11:16
Speaker 5: I don't know why. If they've got the funds, I
11:17
Speaker 5: don't know why they wouldn't because it's just going to
11:19
Speaker 5: be a win win for everybody. I think so too.
11:20
Speaker 5: But and I think they will. But you know, so far,
11:23
Speaker 5: we haven't asked.
11:23
Speaker 6: But what we've done is we've earmarked or we will
11:26
Speaker 6: earmark some money even if we don't get any contributions,
11:29
Speaker 6: because I want to make sure that the Kenawha County
11:32
Speaker 6: Deputies and all of our municipalities can use it and
11:35
Speaker 6: go out there and train, and I think they're going
11:37
Speaker 6: to be I think they're really going to like this
11:39
Speaker 6: new facility. It's going to be much safer, it's going
11:41
Speaker 6: to be covered, it'll just be much much better.
11:45
Speaker 5: Talking with Kenawa County Commission, President of Binsi Lango, a
11:47
Speaker 5: Dave Island show on five eighty Live is brought to
11:49
Speaker 5: you apart but Live Healthy West Virginia presented by WVU Medicine.
11:52
Speaker 5: It's a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles and to be on
11:54
Speaker 5: the state Jack have a latest episodes wv metronews dot
11:57
Speaker 5: com under the podcast menu. All right, so lots going
12:00
Speaker 5: on in the county. First fall clean up happened last
12:03
Speaker 5: week at the old Hoover High School, and I think
12:06
Speaker 5: the next one's going to be in South Charleston coming
12:07
Speaker 5: up in October.
12:08
Speaker 6: Yeah, before our fall cleanups are probably I mean, people
12:11
Speaker 6: wait in line to bring things out there. And we
12:14
Speaker 6: started doing that years ago because we noticed that if
12:18
Speaker 6: you don't collect the tires, if you don't collect the
12:20
Speaker 6: you know, the various things, that they end up in
12:22
Speaker 6: creeks and they end up in culverts. And so we
12:25
Speaker 6: started doing that and it's been very, very successful, and
12:30
Speaker 6: so we're going to continue doing that as long as
12:31
Speaker 6: we can. There's the cost of it is going up significantly,
12:35
Speaker 6: but we want to keep doing that because that's how
12:37
Speaker 6: we keep you know, thousands and thousands of tires out
12:40
Speaker 6: of creeks and rivers.
12:41
Speaker 5: Yeah. What else is going on in the world of
12:44
Speaker 5: County Commission business? I had somebody ask me, Now, I
12:46
Speaker 5: know this is more of a City of Charleston thing,
12:48
Speaker 5: but you guys are you know, I mean, you guys
12:49
Speaker 5: work hand in hand and things. I had somebody in
12:51
Speaker 5: the office asked me today if you've heard anything about
12:53
Speaker 5: the municipal Auditorium.
12:56
Speaker 6: Uh no, and that is squarely within the city. Yeah,
12:58
Speaker 6: you know, I think I've chatted with the mayor once
13:00
Speaker 6: or twice a minute, but it's not something that the
13:02
Speaker 6: county deals with.
13:04
Speaker 5: But I know that, you know that.
13:06
Speaker 6: The good thing is we've got a good mayor that
13:07
Speaker 6: thinks about this stuff all the time. It's not like
13:09
Speaker 6: she's ever she ever turns her brain off. She's the
13:13
Speaker 6: one that will wake up at two am with an
13:15
Speaker 6: idea and then call or text somebody and I'll go say,
13:17
Speaker 6: then call somebody tell yeah, and you know she's out
13:20
Speaker 6: all the time. I tell this story. I dropped my
13:23
Speaker 6: car off at Firestone to get an old change, and
13:25
Speaker 6: it was like, I always always get to work early.
13:27
Speaker 6: I'm usually in the work in the office by six
13:29
Speaker 6: or six thirty. But I dropped my car off around
13:31
Speaker 6: five forty five and I was walking down Capitol Street
13:34
Speaker 6: and it was raining, it was dark, and this person yelled.
13:38
Speaker 5: Commissioner's a line go.
13:40
Speaker 6: I was like, oh boy, here we go. This is
13:41
Speaker 6: where I eat, this is where I meet my end.
13:44
Speaker 6: And uh, the lady comes running up to me and
13:47
Speaker 6: it was the mayor and she was out with her
13:49
Speaker 6: with the CARES team, talking to people, talking to some
13:53
Speaker 6: of the folks that are on the street, trying to
13:54
Speaker 6: figure out where they're from, getting family information, trying to
13:57
Speaker 6: reunite them with their families. But she goes out and
14:00
Speaker 6: does that and I offered her an umbrella and she
14:03
Speaker 6: said no, and then she ran and disappeared into the darkness.
14:06
Speaker 6: You know, so she is she is a hands on are.
14:09
Speaker 5: She was actually there. She was there unless I was elusive.
14:13
Speaker 5: It was early, all right, mister. Anything on Capital Sports
14:17
Speaker 5: Complex always it's the it's the obligatory question.
14:20
Speaker 6: Yeah, so I you know what, I check my email
14:22
Speaker 6: every single day hoping that we get in Dearbark and
14:25
Speaker 6: we've put in a request. The city has and the
14:27
Speaker 6: county has.
14:28
Speaker 5: Uh.
14:28
Speaker 6: I know that our US senators know how important this is.
14:32
Speaker 6: You know, Senator Capital, she's been she's been great with
14:35
Speaker 6: Knawk County and Senator Justice as a Senator and also
14:39
Speaker 6: as governor has he gets he gets what we're trying
14:42
Speaker 6: to do. He understands it. But that doesn't mean it
14:44
Speaker 6: can always happen. You know, even if they put in
14:46
Speaker 6: their quest, even if they argue for it or fight
14:48
Speaker 6: for it, it doesn't always happen because you're dealing with
14:50
Speaker 6: forty nine other states and everybody wants something right. So, uh,
14:54
Speaker 6: we're optimistic. So we're just kind of watching it. I
14:57
Speaker 6: think if that's kind of the final piece of the puzzle.
15:00
Speaker 6: But if it doesn't happen this year, perhaps it happens
15:02
Speaker 6: next year. But we're going to keep fighting for it,
15:04
Speaker 6: keep trying to make it happen. Ultimately, before I die,
15:07
Speaker 6: the place is going to be there.
15:09
Speaker 5: Okay, Well, and I hope it's not at the hands
15:11
Speaker 5: of a of a figure at five thirty in the
15:14
Speaker 5: right on Capitol Street. You want to stick around and
15:17
Speaker 5: help Stephanie work on the lights? Absolutely? Uh, you're you're
15:20
Speaker 5: you're a handy guy. I can't even program. I try.
15:23
Speaker 6: I had to call my son the other day because
15:24
Speaker 6: my remote control on the TV stopped working, and so
15:28
Speaker 6: now I just go to YouTube or chat GPT. Okay,
15:30
Speaker 6: and I figured it out. You let me take a
15:32
Speaker 6: picture of that on chat GPT and ask it how
15:33
Speaker 6: to fix it.
15:35
Speaker 5: Well, they're working on it, because then it's gone because
15:36
Speaker 5: this show is not on camera. So now it's the
15:38
Speaker 5: time they have to work right now where they work
15:40
Speaker 5: on it. So I don't know that one. I think anger.
15:42
Speaker 5: I think we can fry bacon under that one. It's
15:45
Speaker 5: all the soft lighting I can get. I'm getting old,
15:48

Speaker 5: County Board of Education named Mike Arbogast as the new
19:06
Speaker 5: member of the board here in Kanawha County, as he
19:09
Speaker 5: will be replacing Tracy White. He joins us in studio
19:12
Speaker 5: along with Cavita Board President. How you doing, mister Cavender?
19:15
Speaker 12: Well was there?
19:16
Speaker 5: How you been? I'm doing fine, mister Arbagast. Welcome to
19:18
Speaker 5: the showing.
19:18
Speaker 8: Thank you for having me.
19:19
Speaker 5: Mike and I go back a few years when I
19:23
Speaker 5: was in state government. I used to go to South
19:24
Speaker 5: Charleston High School and do voter registration drives. Okay, so
19:28
Speaker 5: big on that, big, very big on that, very big
19:31
Speaker 5: on that. All right. So I'm gonna start with you,
19:32
Speaker 5: and then Rick, I'm gonna bring you in to talk
19:33
Speaker 5: about some things some other things on the board, and
19:35
Speaker 5: you can jump in at anytime. So you've been around
19:38
Speaker 5: the school system, Mike for a while now, yes, sir,
19:42
Speaker 5: forty years.
19:44
Speaker 13: That's hard to believe that I actually got hired when
19:46
Speaker 13: I was nineteen years old as a teacher aide, and
19:47
Speaker 13: I worked myself through college at night and went in
19:51
Speaker 13: summertime finally graduate and started teaching and coaching at the
19:54
Speaker 13: Dunbar Junior High School and eventually went to South Charleston
19:57
Speaker 13: High School as a basketball coach and golf coach and
20:00
Speaker 13: thought there in nineteen ninety came an athletic director there,
20:05
Speaker 13: vice principal, and then finally principal of school in two
20:08
Speaker 13: thousand and seven, and stayed there till twenty eighteen.
20:11
Speaker 5: So what was it that made you want to go
20:13
Speaker 5: into education to begin with? And your story is really
20:16
Speaker 5: unique because as you said you started as a as
20:18
Speaker 5: an aide and worked your way up. What was it
20:21
Speaker 5: that appealed to you about education in general?
20:24
Speaker 13: You know, it's funny you say that, because I can
20:27
Speaker 13: remember being in sixth grade, believe it or not, and
20:30
Speaker 13: Missus Dodd's class. I remember her vividly. She was a
20:33
Speaker 13: great influential teacher for me. But I remember it was
20:35
Speaker 13: pouring the snow outside and I felt so warm and
20:38
Speaker 13: safe in there, and I thought, you know, what, I'd
20:41
Speaker 13: really like to be a teacher. And then, of course
20:44
Speaker 13: I was an athlete, not a great athlete, but I
20:46
Speaker 13: played sports and I wanted to get into coaching. And
20:49
Speaker 13: I think lastly, my father was a principal in knaw
20:53
Speaker 13: Kay schools. He was principal at Nitro High School in
20:55
Speaker 13: later Dunbar Junior High School. And my mom was an
20:58
Speaker 13: elementary teacher. She ended up getting lafoma in her thirties
21:03
Speaker 13: when I was seven years old, and she passed early.
21:05
Speaker 13: But so education has been always in my life, that background,
21:10
Speaker 13: and I have no regrets. I have enjoyed every day
21:14
Speaker 13: of my career and building relationships with kids and teachers,
21:19
Speaker 13: and I enjoy I've enjoyed to write was.
21:22
Speaker 5: Being on the board something that you maybe as when
21:25
Speaker 5: you were a teacher or you know, when you were
21:28
Speaker 5: in the system and you thought, well, maybe this is
21:30
Speaker 5: something i'd like to do. What made you make that decision?
21:33
Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, not really I never had that thought before.
21:37
Speaker 8: I'm not a politician.
21:38
Speaker 13: I'm an educator, you know, I had said one and
21:43
Speaker 13: Tracy was one of my parents, and I think she's
21:46
Speaker 13: a great person. I've known her and Jerry for a
21:47
Speaker 13: long time because I had the kids in school. And
21:51
Speaker 13: she's not replaceable.
21:53
Speaker 5: You said that in a quote I read from you.
21:54
Speaker 5: You said, I'm not replacing Tracy White.
21:56
Speaker 8: Yeah.
21:56
Speaker 13: She she's you know, she's her own person. I'm my
21:59
Speaker 13: own person. I have a great deal respect for Tracy,
22:01
Speaker 13: and like say, I think the world of her. But
22:03
Speaker 13: you know, I got several phone calls saying, you know,
22:06
Speaker 13: you might be ideal for this, and I've seen on
22:08
Speaker 13: social media where people said, hey, it's a conflict of
22:10
Speaker 13: interest because he's in education, and I thought, why would
22:13
Speaker 13: you not want an educator on the board of education.
22:15
Speaker 8: You know, I'm going to be on a learning curve.
22:18
Speaker 13: I get that I'm going to have to depend heavily
22:21
Speaker 13: on Rick and the other board members to help guide
22:23
Speaker 13: me through what's going on. But I do understand procedure
22:28
Speaker 13: and processes of the Board of Education because I've been
22:31
Speaker 13: in the trenches for so long, and I feel like
22:34
Speaker 13: I want to be able to come in and compliment
22:36
Speaker 13: what these people are doing. Personally, I think we have
22:38
Speaker 13: a good Board of education right now in Knaucay Schools,
22:41
Speaker 13: and I have continued to pay attention to that, you know,
22:44
Speaker 13: after retirement. I think they've been financially responsible. They've had
22:48
Speaker 13: to make tough decisions.
22:49
Speaker 8: I get it.
22:50
Speaker 13: We got a client enrollment funding is different, the formula
22:53
Speaker 13: changes all the time, and I think they've made great hires.
22:56
Speaker 8: And I think the world of doctor Potter. She was
22:58
Speaker 8: my vice principal when I.
23:00
Speaker 13: Say, athletic director at South charlest and so I had
23:03
Speaker 13: a working relationship with her as well.
23:06
Speaker 5: Rick, let me bring you in, Rick cavantur Uh, the
23:08
Speaker 5: president of the Canoa County Board of Education. What do
23:10
Speaker 5: you see in this gall out of here?
23:12
Speaker 12: Well, you know, Mike or Mike, this is Mike your day,
23:14
Speaker 12: Dave Still, I haven't had coffee yet, and the plus
23:17
Speaker 12: it's it's the like.
23:20
Speaker 5: No, no, no, David.
23:20
Speaker 12: So you know, what is really important for a really
23:23
Speaker 12: well rounded board of education in any county is that
23:26
Speaker 12: the members represent a diverse background. And it is as
23:32
Speaker 12: just as important as it is to have educators on
23:34
Speaker 12: the board, it's important to have other perspectives. Or right
23:37
Speaker 12: now we have an attorney on the board, we have
23:40
Speaker 12: someone in social work, we have a former educator. Now
23:43
Speaker 12: we have another former educator.
23:45
Speaker 7: Uh.
23:45
Speaker 12: And of course I've been in the nonprofit sector for
23:47
Speaker 12: the past eight and whatever it is that you do,
23:49
Speaker 12: whatever it is that I do every day. Yeah, yeah,
23:51
Speaker 12: but business development is really easy, you know my focus.
23:55
Speaker 12: But you know, from my perspective, it's really important that
24:00
Speaker 12: we have that, as Mike just pointed out, that person
24:04
Speaker 12: who has been in the trenches for so long, who
24:06
Speaker 12: understands the system itself here in Kannall County, who has
24:08
Speaker 12: already built all those really important relationships over the past
24:12
Speaker 12: forty years and understands the challenges, understands the successes and
24:17
Speaker 12: the ins and outs of the system. And so, you know,
24:20
Speaker 12: when we were going through this process, you know, it
24:23
Speaker 12: became really evident quickly that you know, Mike was definitely
24:26
Speaker 12: the best choice for what we need right now here
24:28
Speaker 12: in Kannall County.
24:30
Speaker 5: If you're wondering why Dale Cooper sending beside you, he's
24:32
Speaker 5: he's playing he's playing a model right now because they're
24:35
Speaker 5: working on the lights and they needed a body that's
24:37
Speaker 5: set there, and so they go to management and find
24:40
Speaker 5: somebody that wasn't doing anything. Yeah, I'm kiddy. It's the
24:42
Speaker 5: hardest working man in Oh I know here. I've done, kiddy.
24:45
Speaker 5: And plus he's my boss. Yeah, so I have to
24:47
Speaker 5: say that.
24:48
Speaker 14: I have to.
24:48
Speaker 5: We're obligated. So let Michael, let me let me go
24:51
Speaker 5: back to you just for a moment. What's uh when
24:54
Speaker 5: you you were named in this position Monday evening and
24:57
Speaker 5: that's that's when your name was brought up and you
25:00
Speaker 5: are officially now on the board.
25:01
Speaker 8: Right, Well, I have to be sworn.
25:03
Speaker 5: I got to be sworn in, Okay, so that's got
25:04
Speaker 5: to happen. Yes, all right, But what are some of
25:07
Speaker 5: your areas of focus going to be? I always asked political.
25:10
Speaker 5: I know you said you're not a politician, but I
25:11
Speaker 5: always ask political.
25:12
Speaker 8: Okay.
25:12
Speaker 5: I always ask political people like what's the thing you
25:14
Speaker 5: want to hit the ground running on? And of course
25:17
Speaker 5: you have to work within the confines of the other
25:19
Speaker 5: board members and the superintendent as well, But everybody's always
25:23
Speaker 5: got something that's well. I'd like to see if we
25:24
Speaker 5: can get something done about this, And is there certain
25:27
Speaker 5: certain areas that you're looking at, Mike.
25:29
Speaker 8: I'm all about kids, have been my whole life.
25:32
Speaker 13: I think we need to continue to focus on providing
25:35
Speaker 13: a world class education for our students. They're going to
25:38
Speaker 13: be contributors in society. Wants to get out of high
25:40
Speaker 13: school and continue to build those relationships. I'm a great
25:46
Speaker 13: supporter of teachers. I have seen the most talented people
25:52
Speaker 13: that I've ever met in my life that are in
25:54
Speaker 13: schools teaching. They didn't do this to get rich, you know.
25:57
Speaker 13: In the criticism they take sometimes as unfair because there
26:02
Speaker 13: are really great teachers out there, all of them perfect.
26:04
Speaker 8: No they're not. I'm not perfect.
26:06
Speaker 13: I made tons of mistakes during my tenure as a
26:09
Speaker 13: teacher and coach and a principal, but some of them
26:12
Speaker 13: need to be brought along.
26:13
Speaker 8: I get that.
26:15
Speaker 13: But here again, I think a focus on what we're
26:19
Speaker 13: doing in the classrooms to prepare our students for an
26:23
Speaker 13: ever changing world is greatly important.
26:27
Speaker 8: I also think that.
26:32
Speaker 13: I personally want our kids not only to be contributors
26:35
Speaker 13: to society. But I want them to have success and
26:38
Speaker 13: enjoy life. And I used to tell my kids at
26:40
Speaker 13: the high school that all time, not everybody's going to
26:43
Speaker 13: be an attorney or a doctor, but you can still
26:46
Speaker 13: find your niche pursue that, pursue your dreams, pursue your passion,
26:51
Speaker 13: and here again pursue happiness in life.
26:54
Speaker 5: Talking again with Mike Harvergast, who's the new member will
26:56
Speaker 5: be when he's officially sworn in on the Canon County
26:58
Speaker 5: Board of Education also board presient and it Rick Cabinder
27:01
Speaker 5: is here. Mike and Rick you can win in on
27:03
Speaker 5: this as well. It's it's been a difficult not just
27:06
Speaker 5: in Kanawa County, but across the state of West Virginia
27:08
Speaker 5: and really across the country. It's difficult times, uh, in
27:11
Speaker 5: the world of public education because there's, uh, there's there's
27:13
Speaker 5: a lot of different options now and and and you know,
27:16
Speaker 5: there's all these different you know, homeschooling, there's all these
27:19
Speaker 5: different things and uh and and you know, it's it's
27:23
Speaker 5: a challenging time, you know, for public education across this
27:26
Speaker 5: country right now.
27:27
Speaker 14: It is, uh.
27:29
Speaker 13: And I'm all in favor of parents doing what's right
27:32
Speaker 13: for their kids. And quick homeschool story. I always opened
27:35
Speaker 13: up my school to homeschool parents. They would come to
27:39
Speaker 13: me and say, Mike, I can't do trigger am Trier,
27:43
Speaker 13: I can't do physics. Can I enroll my child here
27:45
Speaker 13: for one class a day? And every time I was like, yeah, absolutely,
27:48
Speaker 13: and it was almost like they were surprised by that.
27:51
Speaker 13: But here again, I'm about kids. I'm about trying to
27:54
Speaker 13: help people to grow and prosper in life. And so
27:57
Speaker 13: I would pick them up and they would participate in
28:00
Speaker 13: the class, and when they were done with it, you know,
28:02
Speaker 13: a lot of times they'd end up saying, hey, I
28:04
Speaker 13: want to go and go to school here, and they'd
28:06
Speaker 13: come in with us and stay full time. And other
28:08
Speaker 13: times we drop them from from our roles.
28:10
Speaker 5: And I didn't know you could do that.
28:12
Speaker 8: Again, Well I did it.
28:14
Speaker 13: I've maybe on me about that, but I will tell
28:17
Speaker 13: you that, you know, they did count against my dropout wreck.
28:20
Speaker 13: So you look at that formula, say, well they had
28:22
Speaker 13: an eight percent dropout right at the school. Well, you know,
28:25
Speaker 13: I had five homeschool kids and entertaking a class account
28:27
Speaker 13: against me.
28:28
Speaker 8: At the time. But that's another story for another day.
28:30
Speaker 13: But uh, and I think the State Department actually has
28:34
Speaker 13: has looked into that, and I'm not sure that that's
28:36
Speaker 13: still the policy it is now. So here again when
28:39
Speaker 13: I say that, I do support all kids, and I
28:41
Speaker 13: support parents' rights to you know, you you raise your
28:44
Speaker 13: child the way you want to raise your child, and
28:46
Speaker 13: I'm going to respect that. I might not agree with
28:48
Speaker 13: everything that happens, but I'm going to respect and do
28:51
Speaker 13: everything I can to help. But back to the challenging times.
28:54
Speaker 13: I know, I know, you know, by and large, I
28:57
Speaker 13: am anti consolidation by and oh tax payer dollars. And
29:01
Speaker 13: you know, we got decline enrollment, and you know, we
29:04
Speaker 13: have a declining population here in the valley, and I
29:07
Speaker 13: know there's going to be challenges and hard decisions have
29:09
Speaker 13: to be made, and I'm not sure that's not really
29:12
Speaker 13: on the table, I don't think right now. But I'm
29:14
Speaker 13: just saying I think this Board of Education, you know,
29:18
Speaker 13: as hard as those decisions are to make, I think
29:21
Speaker 13: they've been financially responsible and had to make some tough
29:25
Speaker 13: decisions that certainly not everybody that's going to be happy with.
29:28
Speaker 5: And look, I don't think anybody in the world of
29:30
Speaker 5: education wants to close schools, wants to consomidate some. I mean,
29:34
Speaker 5: you'd like to leave every one of them open if
29:36
Speaker 5: you could.
29:36
Speaker 12: Well, you know, Dave, and we've talked about this before
29:38
Speaker 12: here on the show over the past couple of years.
29:41
Speaker 12: You know, we're facing two challenges as a state here.
29:44
Speaker 12: We are declining population, as Mike just pointed out, and
29:47
Speaker 12: as we've talked about several times, and we don't see
29:49
Speaker 12: that changing. And we're also seeing a shift in the
29:52
Speaker 12: view of public education at the state level. You know,
29:55
Speaker 12: as far as our lawmakers are concerned and and what's
29:58
Speaker 12: happening there, and we as any boards are are sort
30:02
Speaker 12: of constantly challenged to make the best decisions we possibly
30:04
Speaker 12: can within the confines of our space in the county.
30:08
Speaker 5: Right and.
30:11
Speaker 12: Unfortunately, to your point about consolidations, we never want to
30:13
Speaker 12: see that happen. But declining population, uh, you know, it
30:17
Speaker 12: dictates that unfortunately. And you know, as and as far
30:20
Speaker 12: as the other options that have been presented to parents
30:23
Speaker 12: and students outside of public education, we can't control that either.
30:26
Speaker 12: Have my opinions on it, It really doesn't matter as
30:29
Speaker 12: far as as far as I'm concerned. But we as
30:32
Speaker 12: a board have to take those challenges and do the
30:34
Speaker 12: absolute best we can with it. I can tell you
30:37
Speaker 12: with our rockstar superintendent, Doctor Paula Potter, and and her
30:41
Speaker 12: incredible leadership and her leadership team, and all the wonderful
30:45
Speaker 12: administrators and teachers we have in this county, I can
30:47
Speaker 12: tell you can County offers a world class education. I
30:51
Speaker 12: would venture to say that we also are setting a
30:53
Speaker 12: standard for the rest of the state on how we
30:55
Speaker 12: not only operate as a board, but how we provide
30:58
Speaker 12: the education to our students. The end of the day,
31:01
Speaker 12: we're responsible for creating the future's workforce, right, And that's
31:05
Speaker 12: why I got interested in running eight nine years ago,
31:08
Speaker 12: was because of the work that I do every day
31:10
Speaker 12: in building and helping build small business here in the
31:12
Speaker 12: in the Charleston area, realizing how close that ties to
31:16
Speaker 12: public education and making sure that equality education will lead to,
31:20
Speaker 12: as Mike pointed out, you know, shaping and molding you know,
31:24
Speaker 12: the future members of society that they can contribute back
31:27
Speaker 12: to society but also experienced success themselves and make our
31:30
Speaker 12: state and make our region better. So that becomes a
31:35
Speaker 12: bigger challenge when we're seeing population decline and when we're
31:37
Speaker 12: seeing so many other options presented to parents and students
31:40
Speaker 12: that are outside of public education. But I'm very confident
31:43
Speaker 12: that we still offer the best option for making sure
31:46
Speaker 12: that we're preparing our workforce for the future.
31:47
Speaker 5: We talked about consolidation a little bit earlier, and I
31:50
Speaker 5: will say one of the schools has got a new name.
31:53
Speaker 5: They decided the name last week. We have Country Country
31:56
Speaker 5: Roads Elementary School, and that was chosen by you may
32:00
Speaker 5: not been on on the record exactly how they did it,
32:02
Speaker 5: but that was choosen by the public right well, that community.
32:05
Speaker 12: So they based on the student vote and fifty on
32:10
Speaker 12: the community and parent vote in the DuPont City the
32:15
Speaker 12: four elementary schools, so that we had to vote to
32:17
Speaker 12: consolidate in the eastern part of the county last year.
32:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, and so and so the elementary school will be
32:23
Speaker 5: called Country Roads.
32:24
Speaker 12: Roads Elementary School.
32:25
Speaker 5: Did they have a nickname yet, because I like a
32:27
Speaker 5: mascot or mascot.
32:28
Speaker 12: I don't think so they'll choose that as well. They
32:30
Speaker 12: choose that fully, we have to vote. They bring the
32:33
Speaker 12: name to us after they went through the process, and
32:35
Speaker 12: then we vote as a board to approve it. And
32:36
Speaker 12: of course we voted for what they wanted. So Uh No,
32:40
Speaker 12: I think it's great and that that just that builds
32:43
Speaker 12: spirit in that community, right, It gives them buy in
32:46
Speaker 12: and builds spirit in that community. And I'm really excited
32:48
Speaker 12: to see what happens on Stephanie.
32:49
Speaker 5: One of our producers suggested that they call them the
32:51
Speaker 5: John Denvers.
32:52
Speaker 12: The John Denvers, and then with that mascot mascot would
32:55
Speaker 12: just be a big John Denver.
32:56
Speaker 5: And who was I I was. I interviewed somebody in
32:59
Speaker 5: there that said call them the Mountain Mamas. I said, well,
33:01
Speaker 5: I don't know that a ten year old boy he's
33:03
Speaker 5: gonna win and want to be playing for the Mountain Mamas.
33:05
Speaker 5: You know, I don't know. There's all kinds of things
33:07
Speaker 5: that could go wrong with that. Mike, you're a sports guy,
33:09
Speaker 5: you know all about that. Yes, sir, Mike, I got
33:12
Speaker 5: a text here that says, my daughter and son both
33:15
Speaker 5: graduated South Charleston twenty twelve and twenty thirteen. Mike was
33:18
Speaker 5: so great to the kids and to the parents. He's
33:20
Speaker 5: blunt and straight to the point when speaking. Reminds me
33:23
Speaker 5: of the late Pete thal Oh, that's what the Texters says.
33:26
Speaker 13: I appreciate that boat of confidence, and I actually had
33:29
Speaker 13: a good working relationship with mister Fall and I'm going
33:33
Speaker 13: to do the best I can. You know, this is
33:35
Speaker 13: the first time I've ever personally met wreck by Bay.
33:39
Speaker 13: I don't know what's out there, I haven't seen it,
33:41
Speaker 13: but I am looking forward to working with this sport.
33:45
Speaker 13: I'm sure I'm not going to be perfect. I'm sure
33:49
Speaker 13: I'll have to make decisions that doesn't please everybody, But
33:51
Speaker 13: you know what, the same kind of deal with being
33:53
Speaker 13: a principal. I had to make decisions that I thought
33:55
Speaker 13: was best for the masses, and the best are for
33:57
Speaker 13: our students and our teachers, and we move forward from it,
34:01
Speaker 13: and we can have a disagreement with mutual respect, and
34:05
Speaker 13: I'm okay with that.
34:06
Speaker 12: That's one thing that we always, uh we've always talked
34:08
Speaker 12: about as far as our board is concerned, is that,
34:10
Speaker 12: as you've seen, we've not always had a five zero
34:12
Speaker 12: vote on everything we've We've never not always agreed on
34:15
Speaker 12: every single vote.
34:16
Speaker 5: I don't know Rick that if it's always some things
34:19
Speaker 5: are obvious are going to be obvious. I don't know
34:21
Speaker 5: that you want to have a year so straight five
34:23
Speaker 5: of them right, and and it's.
34:26
Speaker 12: Good to get those different perspectives and opinions, and it's
34:29
Speaker 12: good sometimes for for for the public to see that
34:31
Speaker 12: we're not always going to all agree on everything, uh,
34:34
Speaker 12: but we no matter what, we're very very professional board
34:38
Speaker 12: and we always respect each other at the end of it,
34:39
Speaker 12: at the end of the meeting, we move on and
34:41
Speaker 12: we go to the next thing. And that's one that's
34:45
Speaker 12: one aspect of this board service that I've always been
34:48
Speaker 12: proud of is the fact that no matter if we
34:50
Speaker 12: do agree or not, we're going to respect each other.
34:53
Speaker 12: But again, a lot of that is a lot of
34:55
Speaker 12: that comes with the leadership of the superintendent and the
34:57
Speaker 12: working relationship we have with the superintendent and you know,
35:01
Speaker 12: letting her lead this county and you know, with our
35:05
Speaker 12: of course, with our advice as a board, but we
35:08
Speaker 12: put that trust in the superintendent to do to lead
35:11
Speaker 12: the day that day to day operations of this system.
35:14
Speaker 12: And you know, again we may not always agree, but
35:16
Speaker 12: we always respect one another.
35:18
Speaker 5: Cavender, Mike Carbagas, I appreciate you both being here. I'll
35:20
Speaker 5: leave you with this and I think I've told Rick
35:22
Speaker 5: the story before. My U, my cousin was the board
35:26
Speaker 5: president UH in Logan County, and he told me one time.
35:29
Speaker 5: He said, I think everybody should have to serve on
35:31
Speaker 5: the Board of education like jury duty, because it because
35:34
Speaker 5: because then you'll get to see what it's like.
35:36
Speaker 8: Rot. I'm not sure what it's going to be like,
35:40
Speaker 8: but I'm excited to give it a shot.
35:42
Speaker 5: I'm sure you'll do good things, all right, mister Cavinder.
35:44
Speaker 5: Always pleasure to have you here, and Mike, good to
35:45
Speaker 5: see you again. And you'll be sworn in this week,
35:49
Speaker 5: right this week.
35:50
Speaker 12: I think it's the sixth, the October sixth, that will
35:52
Speaker 12: be the ceremonial swearing and we we do you know,
35:54
Speaker 12: we have an official swearing and that happens beforehand and
35:56
Speaker 12: then that we do a ceremonial swearing in. I think
35:58
Speaker 12: Mike's first meeting will be October.

Speaker 5: Different company we have we share the call letters or radio.
42:53
Speaker 5: THEIR television i say that because we got we've been
42:57
Speaker 5: getting quite a bit of phone calls here at the
42:59
Speaker 5: front desk for about the About The jimmy kimball situation
43:05
Speaker 5: And The sinclair group of stations opting not to Air
43:08
Speaker 5: The Jimmy, kimmel show which THEY Own wchs television Here. In,
43:12
Speaker 5: charleston uh but we have nothing to do. With that
43:14
Speaker 5: We receive facebook messages and you know it's it, ain't
43:17
Speaker 5: us that's. Not us they're not. Bad People and i'm
43:20
Speaker 5: gonna EXPLAIN what i mean by that coming up here
43:22
Speaker 5: in a couple. Of moments the decision was made on
43:24
Speaker 5: a corporate level not to Air The. Kimmel show it
43:27
Speaker 5: was not the decision of the. Local folks so if
43:30
Speaker 5: you could please stop harassing. These people it would, be
43:36
Speaker 5: like here's AN example i came, up with and This
43:38
Speaker 5: is i'm pretty bad at coming up. With analogies it'd
43:40
Speaker 5: be like going into your local McDonald's and demanding that
43:43
Speaker 5: they make you a roast. Beef, sandwich well they don't
43:46
Speaker 5: sell roastby sandwiches. At McDonald's and you wouldn't yell at
43:50
Speaker 5: the person behind the counter, AND say, i said make
43:53
Speaker 5: me a roast beef sandwich because corporate won't. Allow it it's.
43:56
Speaker 5: That simple so it's not the fault of the local
44:00
Speaker 5: station that they are owned by a much larger Company
44:04
Speaker 5: called sinclair that opted not to carry carry. The Show
44:08
Speaker 5: next star also opted not to Carry The Jimmy Kimmel
44:12
Speaker 5: So next star does not own the station Here. In
44:14
Speaker 5: charleston they own, another station, you, know thirteen which is,
44:17
Speaker 5: totally unrelated, uh to to any. Of THIS but i
44:20
Speaker 5: did want to point that out that it's not, the folks,
44:22
Speaker 5: you know it's not it's not it's not the fault
44:25
Speaker 5: of the folks that Are locally this was a corporate
44:28
Speaker 5: decision Made by sinclair and calling and complaining to them
44:31
Speaker 5: locally is not gonna not. Gonna help your issue Is,
44:34
Speaker 5: with sinclair it's not with the. Local. Folks uh as
44:36
Speaker 5: for the, SHOW itself I didn't i didn't, watch IT
44:39
Speaker 5: but i heard the audio and the radio driving in
44:41
Speaker 5: in the. MORNING news. I thought I Thought jimmy kimmel
44:45
Speaker 5: did a good job of stating he did not mean
44:46
Speaker 5: to harm the Memory Of charlie kirk or. HIS family
44:49
Speaker 5: a good, job THERE and i believe him on that
44:52
Speaker 5: Quote from, kimmel though a government threat to silence a
44:56
Speaker 5: comedian that the government doesn't like Is anti america and.
45:00
