- 0:00Speaker 1: The popcorn moment. Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
- 0:04Speaker 1: It's the story you need to hear to believe.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Then grab your popcorn, because there is more Indiana primaries
- 0:09Speaker 2: last night and President Trump turning point Action turning point
- 0:12Speaker 2: USA winning big.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Was it all about redistricting?
- 0:17Speaker 2: The governor of Indiana joins us right now, Mike Brown,
- 0:19Speaker 2: and I appreciate you taking the.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Time, Governor to be with us.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Let's just start with a general your take on the
- 0:25Speaker 2: primaries last night.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Well, with all the handicappers saying that we'd be lucky
- 0:31Speaker 3: to win one or two, obviously that one the case.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I think it was an excellent evening. I think it
- 0:39Speaker 3: calls out the folks that dug in in the Senate
- 0:43Speaker 3: and in our own support. We had twenty five wins
- 0:48Speaker 3: and three that didn't make it and two too close
- 0:51Speaker 3: to call. That's about it as good as it gets
- 0:54Speaker 3: in the business of endorsing. So I think it was
- 0:58Speaker 3: clear if you get to the reasons of why redistricting
- 1:01Speaker 3: was brought to Indiana and elsewhere, is the Democrats have
- 1:05Speaker 3: jerrymandered so effectively over the years. New England as an example,
- 1:11Speaker 3: our neighbor to the West, which is I think that
- 1:14Speaker 3: was a fifty three forty seven.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Election last time.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And they've got to think of their seventeen congressional districts,
- 1:21Speaker 3: fourteen of them, you know, were blue.
- 1:24Speaker 4: So I think the reason.
- 1:26Speaker 3: For doing it made sense in Indiana, digging in with
- 1:30Speaker 3: the leadership being so staunchly against it, when at the
- 1:34Speaker 3: closing line close to eighty percent of conservatives and Republicans
- 1:39Speaker 3: thought it was a good idea. They're paying for the
- 1:41Speaker 3: consequences of it, just like I predicted back then.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Now when we take a look at redistricting to which
- 1:49Speaker 2: I favored, and I was a very very loud voice
- 1:54Speaker 2: of and continue to be. I have made the statement
- 1:58Speaker 2: quite clearly that redistricting was handled properly the whole the presentation,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and I said this, sir, about your office, I said
- 2:06Speaker 2: this about the Vice President, Jade Vance, the entire thing.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I think that we could have handled this better and
- 2:12Speaker 2: gotten a better result from the beginning. So if we
- 2:16Speaker 2: had approached redistricting differently, do you think we would actually be.
- 2:20Speaker 1: In this moment today? Were any of those senators people.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Who could have been moved by a better presentation and
- 2:27Speaker 2: a better conversation before we got to that vote in
- 2:31Speaker 2: the Senate, Well, I don't remember what the particulars were
- 2:34Speaker 2: of what you would have suggested, but I think all
- 2:36Speaker 2: of us did to the extent we could do.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But when you had one individual and I'm calling for
- 2:42Speaker 3: leadership change there after this In terms of sender Bray,
- 2:47Speaker 3: he obviously was using methods that scared off the individuals
- 2:53Speaker 3: that were thinking about it and was going to happen.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And I think when you have someone that has that
- 2:59Speaker 3: kind of paser and digs in regardless of what you
- 3:02Speaker 3: could do, I'm not going to say to you, well,
- 3:04Speaker 3: I always love to learn from what you go through
- 3:08Speaker 3: and distill it. But in this case, he made that
- 3:12Speaker 3: decision and figured there probably wouldn't be any consequences. These
- 3:16Speaker 3: margins were unbelievable when almost anyone in mainstream media was saying,
- 3:23Speaker 3: lucky if we pick up one or two. So I think, yes,
- 3:26Speaker 3: always go back, debrief, see what you can do better.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You may be right, but in this business, you deal
- 3:32Speaker 3: with what happens in the moment and then you do
- 3:35Speaker 3: react to it. And I think this is a clear
- 3:37Speaker 3: statement of where they were wrong. And I think the
- 3:40Speaker 3: way you prevent stuff like this in the future is
- 3:43Speaker 3: make sure whoever leads your chamber is going to be
- 3:46Speaker 3: more in line with the pulse of what's going on
- 3:49Speaker 3: not only in your own backyard, in the country as well.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So let's make sure we go a little bit deeper
- 3:55Speaker 1: on this.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Talking to the governor of Indiana, Mike Brown, are you
- 3:58Speaker 2: calling for the center pro Tim rod Bray to step
- 4:01Speaker 2: down from leadership?
- 4:03Speaker 3: Well, I think with this statement that was so crystal clear,
- 4:09Speaker 3: I think that if he doesn't, it probably won't happen
- 4:12Speaker 3: within their own caucus.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Anyway. I'm not going to be I'm one that.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Figures once you have something like this, however it occurs,
- 4:22Speaker 3: it's the harbinger of change. And my main issue was
- 4:28Speaker 3: not even redistricting. The Senate has been the place where
- 4:32Speaker 3: a lot of good conservative entrepreneurial legislation seems to die.
- 4:38Speaker 4: And if we're going to be a state that is
- 4:41Speaker 4: going to do things above.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And beyond the normal, you can have as your default
- 4:45Speaker 3: a wet blanket and I'll let things evolve here forward
- 4:50Speaker 3: within their own caucus, and I think it's going to
- 4:52Speaker 3: be clear, you know what should happen.
- 4:54Speaker 4: We'll see if it does.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Well, that was a mouthful.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I mean referring to the Center pro tem as a
- 5:04Speaker 2: wet blanket. You now have to go about getting these
- 5:07Speaker 2: candidates to win the general election.
- 5:09Speaker 1: What have you heard from groups.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That were out there engaged in this fight, whether it's
- 5:13Speaker 2: Turning Point USA, Turning Point Action Club for Growth. I
- 5:16Speaker 2: believe in others who spend a tremendous amount of money
- 5:18Speaker 2: in Indiana. What are you hearing from them about their
- 5:21Speaker 2: commitment to see it through and get these candidates elected
- 5:25Speaker 2: in a general?
- 5:26Speaker 3: You know, I think if you just extend the equation logically,
- 5:30Speaker 3: they're probably not interested in the spending this much and
- 5:33Speaker 3: then seeing it fall flat in the general. There's been
- 5:37Speaker 3: no particular conversation on it. I mean, I think we're
- 5:40Speaker 3: kind of savoring what happened last night. It was such
- 5:43Speaker 3: a clear statement with such wide margins. I think the
- 5:47Speaker 3: rest is a simpler equation. And in these places, some
- 5:51Speaker 3: of these districts are going to be maybe close to
- 5:56Speaker 3: where they could go either way, and most of them,
- 5:59Speaker 3: though or solid Republican Senate seats to where there won't
- 6:04Speaker 3: be any question. A few of them will be ones
- 6:08Speaker 3: where you will have to put resources into it, and
- 6:11Speaker 3: I think it will be good money after good.
- 6:13Speaker 2: When you do it, let's talk about what comes next,
- 6:18Speaker 2: because you now have two years to work with this
- 6:21Speaker 2: potential new crop of GOP state centators. Talking to the
- 6:26Speaker 2: Governor of Indiana, Mike Brawn, are you going to take
- 6:29Speaker 2: another bite at the apple on property taxes and make
- 6:31Speaker 2: any changes that provide further relief? Because a little bit
- 6:36Speaker 2: was seen this year, I don't think as much as
- 6:37Speaker 2: people wanted to see serious relief, not even a little relief,
- 6:41Speaker 2: serious relief for hoos your taxpayers, because of the size
- 6:44Speaker 2: of property taxes that we have all been experiencing.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Well, it was one point three billion over three years,
- 6:52Speaker 3: passed by two votes, mostly due to Senate leadership. When
- 6:57Speaker 3: they give you SB one and gut it down onto
- 7:00Speaker 3: a hollow shell. Took us four months to build it
- 7:03Speaker 3: back in the House. And when you look at homes
- 7:07Speaker 3: being two thirds exempted regardless of value over the next
- 7:12Speaker 3: five years, that's about as much as the.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Cash flow could stand anyway.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And remember most of the criticism of that would have
- 7:19Speaker 3: been from Republicans that run local government. So I think
- 7:23Speaker 3: there's always room to do more. The key thing, Tony,
- 7:27Speaker 3: you got a cash flow and our economic development that
- 7:30Speaker 3: we put into place in the year and four months
- 7:33Speaker 3: is knocking it out of the park. We're getting it
- 7:36Speaker 3: across the state with a regional approach. And here's the
- 7:40Speaker 3: other dividend we're getting. I was asking for agencies to
- 7:43Speaker 3: run themselves more efficiently after the COVID glut of funds
- 7:48Speaker 3: and all the things that we were doing. That was
- 7:52Speaker 3: growing government faster than ever before in Indiana. We're really
- 7:57Speaker 3: realizing that. And when that faulty forecast from April of
- 8:01Speaker 3: twenty five was vindicated by an accurate one in December,
- 8:05Speaker 3: we're in a trajectory of being in the best shape
- 8:08Speaker 3: we've ever been in. And I'm going to credit that
- 8:10Speaker 3: to a great entrepreneurial team that I put together of entrepreneurs,
- 8:15Speaker 3: private sector folks that we're willing to come into government.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And we're seeing in across the policy silos of healthcare
- 8:23Speaker 3: and education, utility rates restructured to IURC to make them
- 8:29Speaker 3: a ratepayer attentive, froze tuitions at the public schools. I mean,
- 8:35Speaker 3: that affordability issue is real, and I want to end
- 8:38Speaker 3: with this on that issue. Biden gave it to us
- 8:42Speaker 3: over those three years of twenty two, three and four
- 8:45Speaker 3: cumulative inflation of twenty five percent.
- 8:49Speaker 4: We're living with that hangover.
- 8:51Speaker 3: We can't forget why we've got affordability issues. I'm going
- 8:55Speaker 3: to do everything to mitigate it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: As governor.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Shown that with stuff that we've done over these last
- 9:03Speaker 3: four months.
- 9:04Speaker 4: When in twenty six.
- 9:05Speaker 2: When this new crop of senators, if they should all
- 9:08Speaker 2: win the general are sworn in, just a quick yes
- 9:11Speaker 2: or no, we could do a round robin right here,
- 9:13Speaker 2: are you going to take another bite at the apple
- 9:14Speaker 2: to further lower property taxes?
- 9:17Speaker 3: Property taxes are always going to be on the table.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I feel that after a certain point in time, especially
- 9:24Speaker 3: after you've paid off your mortgage, that you probably shouldn't
- 9:27Speaker 3: have another expense out there. Several different angles to do
- 9:31Speaker 3: more and add to that is always going to be
- 9:34Speaker 3: on the table. And again focus on our state senate,
- 9:38Speaker 3: whoever might remain that was against more aggressive property tax reform,
- 9:43Speaker 3: we're certainly going to have a different complexion there.
- 9:46Speaker 4: So yes, it is on the table.
- 9:49Speaker 2: When it comes to gas taxes, will we see the
- 9:52Speaker 2: gas tax holiday continued? Do you want to make that
- 9:55Speaker 2: announcement right now that we've got another month of reduced
- 9:57Speaker 2: gas taxes.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I tell you what I am going to do.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I'm going to break the news that I'm going to
- 10:02Speaker 3: make an announcement later this afternoon, So stay tuned.
- 10:06Speaker 1: See, that's not what we need. We don't need announcements
- 10:08Speaker 1: this afternoon. We need announcements now. We will tune in
- 10:13Speaker 1: for that. Are the Chicago Bears coming to Indiana?
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yes? Or no?
- 10:18Speaker 3: Well, where would you like to spend the next fifty
- 10:20Speaker 3: years if you were starting a business on the outskirts
- 10:23Speaker 3: of Chicago, in a state like Illinois that is legging
- 10:27Speaker 3: in every category, or a place like Indiana where the
- 10:30Speaker 3: economic growth is twice that of Illinois, where you've got
- 10:33Speaker 3: reasonable regulations, where you've got plenty of territory, where logistically
- 10:38Speaker 3: it'd probably be easier to get to the game. But
- 10:40Speaker 3: most importantly, they're a business. And who do you think
- 10:43Speaker 3: is going to pay for all the mismanagement in Illinois.
- 10:48Speaker 3: It'll be the businesses, the major enterprises that do so
- 10:51Speaker 3: the way they govern I think that'll be the driving
- 10:54Speaker 3: factor in terms of what they do over the next
- 10:56Speaker 3: month and.
- 10:56Speaker 4: A half or two.
- 10:57Speaker 2: But the Bears haven't asked for anything else. We haven't
- 10:59Speaker 2: offered anything else. No one's trying to make some desperation,
- 11:02Speaker 2: plead for the Bears. We've made our case and now
- 11:04Speaker 2: the Bears have to do the right thing. Is that
- 11:06Speaker 2: where we're at.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I think that's where we're at.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And we can see by the due diligence that we're
- 11:11Speaker 3: checking off week after week, Mayor McDermott and Hammond has
- 11:15Speaker 3: been doing a yeoman's.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Job up there.
- 11:19Speaker 3: It looks good that it's plot kind of going in
- 11:22Speaker 3: that direction. About the speed we figured once things passed
- 11:26Speaker 3: the threshold of legislation and their strong statement.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think back in February, last but not least, when
- 11:33Speaker 2: do I get named trade Ambassador of Indiana and you.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Publicly are still interested in doing it. So we're going
- 11:39Speaker 3: to actually probably make that happen if you're serious about
- 11:44Speaker 3: in your spare time trying to bring economic development to Indiana.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And I think you're targeting the state of New York.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I correct there in New York, California, Illinois, any place
- 11:56Speaker 2: that has horrible politics, but they can't bring the politics
- 11:59Speaker 2: with them.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And only I deliver that message. Yes, sir, let's.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Let's get this done.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Low hanging fruit to pick there, and you'd be a
- 12:05Speaker 3: good one to do it.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Let's I look forward to my sash and my scepter,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and of course my good parking spot. Most importantly getting
- 12:14Speaker 2: the job done. Governor Braun, I appreciate you taking the
- 12:17Speaker 2: time to be with us. Governor Mike Braun, the governor
- 12:19Speaker 2: of Indiana. We will have traffic for you on the
- 12:22Speaker 2: fives at seven thirty five. Keep it right here. Tony
- 12:25Speaker 2: Katz ninety three WIBC, Good morning,
