- 0:02Speaker 1: Yes, is this a great game or what? Host Tim Kirkton.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We've got half of the duo joining us right now
- 0:09Speaker 1: on FT as we get ready for the start of
- 0:11Speaker 1: the season. Tim, and it is great to have you
- 0:13Speaker 1: on here. We have a lot to get too. But first,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I think most importantly, we haven't had you on officially
- 0:18Speaker 1: since Is this a Great Game or What? Joined the
- 0:21Speaker 1: FT network. So welcome to the family. We love having
- 0:25Speaker 1: you on for guest spots, and now we are going
- 0:27Speaker 1: to see a lot more of you and your son Jeff.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and my son Jeff.
- 0:32Speaker 3: The other half is standing right here just in case
- 0:36Speaker 3: anything goes wrong with the technology. I drove up here
- 0:40Speaker 3: this morning from Maryland. Took three and a half hours.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I left my house at three forty five am so
- 0:47Speaker 3: I could get here in time to make sure nothing
- 0:50Speaker 3: went wrong with the first big taping of the year,
- 0:53Speaker 3: with opening day the real opening day on Thursday. This
- 0:57Speaker 3: is how I lived my life. I drive all the
- 1:00Speaker 3: world just so I can sit next to a magician
- 1:02Speaker 3: like Jeff in case the technology goes wrong, because I
- 1:05Speaker 3: have zero faith that I'll be able to figure this.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Out, and you get to do it with your son.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I mean that's pretty cool, right. Hey, the driving is
- 1:13Speaker 1: worth it when you get to go hang with family
- 1:15Speaker 1: and you call it.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Work, no doubt.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And he rebuilt the entire studio in here. It looks
- 1:22Speaker 3: absolutely great. My son is so talented at this boor
- 1:26Speaker 3: pop up is so bad at everything, and Jeffrey's so
- 1:29Speaker 3: good at all the things I'm bad at, which is
- 1:31Speaker 3: almost everything.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Well, we're going to get into the opening day episode
- 1:37Speaker 1: special that you guys have prepared, but first let's just
- 1:40Speaker 1: get over all thoughts on storylines and what you're excited
- 1:43Speaker 1: about heading into not just tonight, but the entire league
- 1:47Speaker 1: firing up officially.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, the ABS system is going to be really interesting,
- 1:52Speaker 3: and I talked to a bunch of players and managers
- 1:54Speaker 3: this spring about it.
- 1:56Speaker 2: One manager told.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Me, I think it's going to be okay, but he
- 2:00Speaker 3: worried that the strategy for when you challenge is sometimes
- 2:05Speaker 3: going to be more important than the actual playing of
- 2:08Speaker 3: the game.
- 2:09Speaker 2: That worried me a little bit.
- 2:11Speaker 3: And another manager told me that the whole system is
- 2:15Speaker 3: really going to help the short guys in the league,
- 2:18Speaker 3: which means if I had made a comeback, I would hit.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Three forty this year.
- 2:24Speaker 3: He had a guy on his team who listed himself
- 2:27Speaker 3: as five to eleven instead of six feet tall, thinking
- 2:30Speaker 3: it might help him in the ABS system. Yet another
- 2:34Speaker 3: manager told me, no, they measure guys all the time.
- 2:37Speaker 3: You're not going to get away with fake in your
- 2:39Speaker 3: height or anything else. I think this is a work
- 2:42Speaker 3: in progress. I can't wait to see how it goes.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I wouldn't say I'm really excited about it. I'm just
- 2:47Speaker 3: hoping that it works really well.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Tim. Is that what we've seen so many guys shrink
- 2:53Speaker 4: this spring? I mean Alex Bregnant went from six foot
- 2:56Speaker 4: to five ten. I mean there's some guys that have
- 2:58Speaker 4: gone lost like two and three inches. Is this like
- 3:01Speaker 4: back in the day when the guys were gaining three
- 3:03Speaker 4: years of their age once they started checking birth certificates.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Now we're getting shorter because they're actually measuring you.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I shrink every spring, by the way, AJ, But yes,
- 3:12Speaker 3: guys as always you Eric, all you ball players are
- 3:15Speaker 3: the same. You're always looking for an edge no matter what.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So it should be really interesting to watch. And I also,
- 3:22Speaker 3: by the way, it's switching subjects. I saw the Mariners
- 3:25Speaker 3: this spring, and I know this is this is kind
- 3:27Speaker 3: of common to go this way, but they're starting pitching
- 3:30Speaker 3: is great, and I think they've updated their lineup. I
- 3:33Speaker 3: think that they might be the team to beat in
- 3:36Speaker 3: the American League this year. And of course I saw
- 3:39Speaker 3: the Dodgers and fellas last six years, they won three
- 3:42Speaker 3: championships and played to a six thirty winning percentage.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And the last team to do.
- 3:46Speaker 3: That six year span three championships six thirty the fifty
- 3:50Speaker 3: eight fifty three through fifty eight New York Yankees. That's
- 3:54Speaker 3: how dominant the Dodgers are. And I think this is
- 3:58Speaker 3: the best Dodger team that I've seen this decade. The
- 4:02Speaker 3: rotation is ridiculously deep, the bullpen is way better, and
- 4:06Speaker 3: they've had the best you know, everyday right field or
- 4:10Speaker 3: all the free agent market. I'm not sure there's a
- 4:12Speaker 3: weakness on this team right now. That's what Those are
- 4:14Speaker 3: two things that I'm intrigued by. Are the Mariners this good?
- 4:18Speaker 3: And how good are the Dodgers?
- 4:20Speaker 4: All right? Well, then let's keep going down your list.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Who's going to be pushing who's going to be pushing
- 4:24Speaker 4: those two teams to try to beat them by the
- 4:27Speaker 4: end of the season.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw the Blue Jays eric all through the
- 4:32Speaker 3: postseason last year. They put it in play, they catch
- 4:35Speaker 3: the ball, they are young, they're athletic, they push the action,
- 4:39Speaker 3: they run the bases. So I really like the Blue
- 4:42Speaker 3: Jays still, and I think they've upgraded their starting rotation
- 4:45Speaker 3: just a little bit.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Dylan ceased, so.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I think they're right there with the Mariners. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Tigers with that starting rotation is very dangerous. I
- 4:55Speaker 3: saw the Red Sox. They're better than they were last year,
- 4:58Speaker 3: and they made the playoffs last year. I think the
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yankees are better than they were last year, especially with
- 5:03Speaker 3: Garrett Cole maybe being back end of March, Carlos Rodan
- 5:07Speaker 3: end of April.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I think we're going to have a.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Really interesting American League. I think, again, the Mariners are
- 5:14Speaker 3: the best team, but they are about five other teams
- 5:17Speaker 3: that could be the best team in the American League
- 5:19Speaker 3: once we get to October.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Is the American League still inferior? I get it, the
- 5:24Speaker 4: Dodgers are in the National League, but last year it
- 5:26Speaker 4: looked like the American League was still inferior to the
- 5:29Speaker 4: National League, even though the Blue Jays were this close
- 5:32Speaker 4: to winning the World Series.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the National League is catching up a
- 5:36Speaker 2: little bit.
- 5:36Speaker 4: More.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I still think the Phillies have a really good team.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I don't think the window has closed Christopher Sanchez and
- 5:43Speaker 3: the rest of that rotation. Andrew Painter has got a
- 5:46Speaker 3: chance to be pretty darn good as the fifth starter.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Zach Wheeler has some encouraging signs that he'll be back.
- 5:52Speaker 3: We never underestimate the Brewers. The Cubs are better than
- 5:55Speaker 3: they were last year. I think it's a pretty good
- 5:59Speaker 3: National League. I think it's a slightly stronger league than
- 6:02Speaker 3: the American League, but the Dodgers make it that way
- 6:05Speaker 3: more than any team.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Tim Are you a proponent like me that the games
- 6:10Speaker 4: should be one game on opening Day? Meaning I get
- 6:13Speaker 4: why we have the tennight as the Giants and the
- 6:16Speaker 4: Yankees on Netflix, and then tomorrow is more of the
- 6:19Speaker 4: standard opening Day on other channels, and then Friday we
- 6:23Speaker 4: have another to other teams that open. But wasn't it
- 6:25Speaker 4: kind of cool and when Cincinnati was always the first
- 6:29Speaker 4: game right and then? And listen, I get why, and
- 6:33Speaker 4: I get the money side of it, but it was
- 6:34Speaker 4: cool right when it was always Cincinnati and that was
- 6:36Speaker 4: a tradition for like one hundred years, and now we
- 6:39Speaker 4: have games all over the place. Do you kind of
- 6:42Speaker 4: wish we'd just go back to the one game and
- 6:44Speaker 4: go from there.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Look, Aj, I'm almost seventy years old. I'm a little
- 6:49Speaker 3: bit hesitant to change on things.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And yes, I thought it was.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Really cool that the baseball season always kicked off.
- 6:56Speaker 2: With the parade in Cincinnati.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Every first pitch that was thrown for years and years
- 7:02Speaker 3: and years was thrown in Cincinnati. They still have the
- 7:05Speaker 3: parade there. And look, I understand this is all about money,
- 7:08Speaker 3: this is about networks, this is about growing the game.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I get it, but I think it's really I think
- 7:13Speaker 3: it's always right that all the teams play the first
- 7:16Speaker 3: day it starts in Cincinnati.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I mean, look at the Blue Jays.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I'm going to go to the blue Jays opener Friday
- 7:22Speaker 3: night and then I'll do their game on the radio
- 7:24Speaker 3: on Saturday. But so the season really opens on Wednesday
- 7:28Speaker 3: and the defending World champion American League champion Blue Jays
- 7:32Speaker 3: don't play until Friday. That's just kind of odd to me.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But there are a lot of odd things. I'm willing
- 7:37Speaker 3: to go along with it. But if I had my way,
- 7:39Speaker 3: all the teams would play on the same first opening
- 7:42Speaker 3: day and it would all start with a parade in Cincinnati.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Hey, it might be time to have a heart to
- 7:49Speaker 1: heart with your phone and be like, I love you,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but you cost too much.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not paying this much anymore. That's it. I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 4: why would I go more than fifteen dollars a month month.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Mintmobile can give that to me and I get all

- 8:24Speaker 1: mintmobile is for you. Shop plans at mintmobile dot com

- 8:47Speaker 4: All right, so what's your opening day routine? We talked
- 8:50Speaker 4: about oh, spring training routine. I think Jim Bowden would
- 8:53Speaker 4: buy sunscreen and sunglasses. Ruben Tomorrow is gonna wear his
- 8:58Speaker 4: blue suit with his Billies pledge pin, What is your
- 9:03Speaker 4: opening day routine?
- 9:05Speaker 3: Well, I get up really early, as I often do.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I drink a couple of diet mountain dews, not recommended
- 9:11Speaker 3: for most people, but I don't drink coffee. And I
- 9:14Speaker 3: just can't wait for the box scores of that first
- 9:17Speaker 3: game to come out because there's no telling what might
- 9:20Speaker 3: happen on opening Day. So my first full full opening
- 9:24Speaker 3: day when I was a beat writer, the primary beat
- 9:27Speaker 3: writer for a team. I was covering the Rangers in
- 9:31Speaker 3: nineteen eighty two and they opened in Cleveland and George Wright,
- 9:36Speaker 3: their rookie center fielder, went three for five on opening day.
- 9:40Speaker 2: So I'm the beat guy.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I go talk to George after the game because they won.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I said, George, you have.
- 9:44Speaker 2: A good time today. He goes, yeah, I've never been
- 9:46Speaker 2: to a major league game before.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So the first major league game he ever attended, he
- 9:52Speaker 3: got three hits. I mean, these are the crazy kind
- 9:56Speaker 3: of things that can happen on opening Day. I covered
- 9:59Speaker 3: opening Day at the Astrodome in nineteen ninety and Glenn
- 10:03Speaker 3: Davis got hit by a pitch three times on opening Day.
- 10:07Speaker 3: That was the first and only time that has ever happened.
- 10:09Speaker 3: He told me after the game. He says, it's never
- 10:12Speaker 3: a good idea to have bruises on three parts of
- 10:15Speaker 3: your body on opening Day. That's what happened to him.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And in twenty twenty two, this is how pathetic I
- 10:22Speaker 3: am in my life. I was doing a game between
- 10:25Speaker 3: the Reds and the Braves. I was the clubhouse, I mean,
- 10:29Speaker 3: the dugout reporter, and I realized that Joey Votto had
- 10:32Speaker 3: never popped out to the picture in his career. You know,
- 10:36Speaker 3: he never hit infield pop ups anyway, but had never popped.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Out to the picture ever.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And I flew to Atlanta thinking, this would be the
- 10:43Speaker 3: greatest thing ever if Joey Vado did this in a
- 10:47Speaker 3: game that I'm covering on opening Day.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And in the fifth inning he fouled out.
- 10:51Speaker 3: He hit a foul ball in the foul territory, and
- 10:54Speaker 3: Max Fred great fielding Picture went and caught it for
- 10:57Speaker 3: the first p one in the history of Joey Vado's career.
- 11:02Speaker 3: These are the stupid things that I pay attention to.
- 11:05Speaker 2: On opening Day. But that's what makes it so special.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Crazy weird, quirky things happen on opening Day all the time.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's why people listen to you, because they
- 11:15Speaker 4: want to hear the crazy, weird things. But they also
- 11:17Speaker 4: want to hear your predictions because you've had You've been
- 11:20Speaker 4: alive for seventy opening days, and I don't think you've
- 11:23Speaker 4: gotten one prediction for the season right so far. So
- 11:27Speaker 4: that's why they want to hear it. Give me your
- 11:29Speaker 4: division winners in the National League.
- 11:32Speaker 3: All right. In the National League, I'm going to go
- 11:34Speaker 3: with the Phillies and the Cubs and the Dodgers. In
- 11:37Speaker 3: the American League, I'm going to go with the Blue
- 11:41Speaker 3: Jays and the Tigers and the Mariners. Those are my
- 11:44Speaker 3: division winners. And you're right, Eric, if I'm six for six,
- 11:48Speaker 3: that'll probably be a first. And I'm never apologizing for
- 11:52Speaker 3: getting a prediction wrong.
- 11:53Speaker 2: This is baseball. It's way too good to be able
- 11:56Speaker 2: to be predicted.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Is this the easiest prediction year of all time? Ten?
- 12:04Speaker 4: For you?
- 12:05Speaker 2: Well, the Dodgers are pretty easy. You know.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Every year people ask me like, who's the presumptive favorite,
- 12:11Speaker 3: who's the prohibitive favorite, and every year, they're like five options.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think there's only one option. That's how good the
- 12:17Speaker 2: Dodgers are.
- 12:18Speaker 3: But like you said, the American League is going to
- 12:20Speaker 3: be a fistfight from five or six different teams. So
- 12:23Speaker 3: I think it's far less predictable in the American League.
- 12:26Speaker 3: But fellas you know this, the beauty of baseball is
- 12:29Speaker 3: we never know who's gonna win ever. I mean when
- 12:32Speaker 3: when Jordan's Bulls were great, you kind of knew they
- 12:35Speaker 3: were going to win, and you kind of knew how
- 12:38Speaker 3: the game was going to be played because Michael touched
- 12:40Speaker 3: it on every possession. He dominated every game. It doesn't
- 12:44Speaker 3: work that way in baseball. Showhy can only pitch once
- 12:47Speaker 3: a week and the only bats four times in games,
- 12:50Speaker 3: So that changes everything, and to me, that's why baseball
- 12:53Speaker 3: is always the best game ever.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Hey, Tim, quick question on a specific player that I'm
- 12:59Speaker 1: curious to see and I want to see what his
- 13:01Speaker 1: path looks like. Roki Sasaki had a ton of fanfare
- 13:04Speaker 1: coming over to the major leagues and then last year
- 13:07Speaker 1: obviously didn't go the way he wanted to until he
- 13:10Speaker 1: magically rescues the team as a closer for part of
- 13:13Speaker 1: the playoffs. Now fast forward to spring training and he
- 13:17Speaker 1: can't find the zone, and hitters also look like they
- 13:20Speaker 1: have a very distinct plan against him, and he looked
- 13:23Speaker 1: awful in his last start. They're still giving him an opportunity.
- 13:26Speaker 1: So how curious are you to see how this goes
- 13:29Speaker 1: not just on the field, but also with a team
- 13:32Speaker 1: that clearly recruited a player and promised him playing time.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I mean, any team would do that, right if you're
- 13:38Speaker 1: trying to recruit a player and it's not just about money,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you have to say, hey, we're going to give you
- 13:42Speaker 1: every pathway to succeed with development but also with playing time.
- 13:45Speaker 1: But it happens to be a team that's a World
- 13:46Speaker 1: Series contender, right.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Again, Scott, the beauty of baseball.
- 13:51Speaker 3: The light goes on, the light goes off for guys
- 13:53Speaker 3: with absolutely no explanation. Roki Sazaki was pretty bad last year,
- 13:58Speaker 3: and then he pitched one uninning and relief. We saw
- 14:02Speaker 3: that great split, and he was basically great for the
- 14:05Speaker 3: rest of the postseason. How does anyone explain how one
- 14:09Speaker 3: inning and relief can turn a guy?
- 14:10Speaker 2: But it did. So That's why I'm not too.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Worried about Roki Sazaki this spring because We've seen him
- 14:16Speaker 3: terrible and we've seen him really good. But the light
- 14:18Speaker 3: goes on and offer him easier than most guys. I
- 14:22Speaker 3: fully expect him to be a quality pitcher, either as
- 14:25Speaker 3: a starter or reliever as this season goes along, but
- 14:28Speaker 3: he is off to a ragged start. Look great, NBA
- 14:32Speaker 3: jump shooters don't shoot fifteen percent for the floor one
- 14:35Speaker 3: season and then forty eight percent for the three the
- 14:38Speaker 3: next season. It never happens like that, but in baseball
- 14:41Speaker 3: it does all the time.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Which again makes it such a beautiful sport.
- 14:46Speaker 4: I need your award winners. Obviously shows the MVP. So
- 14:50Speaker 4: there's there's that, but there's also MVP, and I need
- 14:53Speaker 4: to say Young's and if you have a Rookie of
- 14:55Speaker 4: the Year, everybody will be watching.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Uh yeah, well I'll be wrong, all right.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I'm just gonna go Chalk because I'm just going Judge
- 15:04Speaker 3: and O'tani. They're the two best players in baseball. They're
- 15:06Speaker 3: ridiculously good. I'm gonna go with Chalk on the on
- 15:10Speaker 3: the starting pitchers, you know, Paul Skins is the best
- 15:13Speaker 3: picture in the National League. Trek Scooble is the best
- 15:15Speaker 3: picture in the American League. I'm gonna go with Nolan
- 15:18Speaker 3: McClain as the rookie of the Year in the National League.
- 15:20Speaker 3: And I'm gonna go with Kevin McGonagall as the rookie
- 15:23Speaker 3: of the Year in the American League, just because he
- 15:26Speaker 3: made the Tigers that gave him number seven. I saw
- 15:30Speaker 3: him in spring training. There's something about that kid that
- 15:32Speaker 3: is so impressive.
- 15:33Speaker 2: So those are my picks.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I'm sure I'll be wrong on those also, and I'm
- 15:37Speaker 3: not gonna apologize for that either, because I repeat, baseball
- 15:41Speaker 3: is too good to know what's gonna happen six months
- 15:44Speaker 3: from now, when we don't know what's gonna happen six
- 15:47Speaker 3: minutes from now.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Hey, let's finish with this, give us a preview and
- 15:52Speaker 1: just more on is this a great game or what?
- 15:55Speaker 1: You have a special game changer Opening Day episode looming.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Right, So we're gonna look mostly at opening Day. I'm
- 16:04Speaker 3: gonna do a team tim which I do for every episode.
- 16:08Speaker 3: So I'm gonna take each position, catcher through pitcher and
- 16:11Speaker 3: pick the greatest performance on opening Day nineteen forty.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Of course, Bob Feller pitched.
- 16:18Speaker 3: A no hitter on opening Day, so he is one
- 16:21Speaker 3: of our pitchers. Ozzie Smith is our shortstop because he
- 16:24Speaker 3: did that ridiculous, amazing backflip to start every opening day.
- 16:29Speaker 3: So that's just one factor. We'll have quirk gins, which
- 16:32Speaker 3: will be the quirkiest things that have ever happened on
- 16:35Speaker 3: opening day. Those are just two things that we'll go into.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Plus we have a few new bells and whistles this year,
- 16:41Speaker 3: which Jeffrey and I have come up with.
- 16:43Speaker 2: So again our podcast, we laugh and we learn.
- 16:46Speaker 3: We don't have really hot takes. We're not making solid
- 16:49Speaker 3: predictions or anything. We're hopefully here to entertain you and
- 16:53Speaker 3: educate you on the best game in the world. That's
- 16:56Speaker 3: when we have in store for tomorrow tomorrow's episode.
- 17:01Speaker 1: We're excited about it. Yeah, and that episode will all
- 17:03Speaker 1: be sponsored by Game Changer. You'll learn more about that
- 17:06Speaker 1: actually coming up on our show, but also on Tim
- 17:09Speaker 1: and jeff show. Tim, awesome, awesome to talk to you.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Happy opening, Daitya, and we're excited to see the brand
- 17:14Speaker 1: shiny new set.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Yeah, which Jeffrey decorated completely, including he's got a bottle
- 17:22Speaker 3: of wine back here that he says he's gonna it's
- 17:24Speaker 3: got my name on it. He's going to open it
- 17:26Speaker 3: when I die which I had to explain. I'm sixty
- 17:30Speaker 3: nine years old. I'm not ninety nine years old. I'm
- 17:32Speaker 3: not planning on dying anytime soon. And that bottle of
- 17:36Speaker 3: wine is right back here.
- 17:38Speaker 1: That might be I hope that that wine doesn't taste
- 17:42Speaker 1: good by the time he opens it, which would mean
- 17:43Speaker 1: he waited too long and you lived too long. So
- 17:47Speaker 1: let's put it that way. Tim, thank you, your Jem,
- 17:49Speaker 1: appreciate you, and we'll look forward to the episode for
- 17:52Speaker 1: opening day.
- 17:54Speaker 2: All right, Thank you, Eric, thank you, Scott, thank you Age.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Talk to you soon.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Hey, Have you at the age wherever thing feels a
- 18:00Speaker 4: little bit more difficult the Jim, yes, but everything like
- 18:04Speaker 4: energy crashes in the afternoon.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You know, you might have been reading about low T
- 18:11Speaker 1: and you see your doctor about it and they want
- 18:14Speaker 1: to give you basically shots every week for the rest
- 18:17Speaker 1: of your life. Oh cool, that sounds fun. And then
- 18:20Speaker 1: you dig deeper and you realize what you're signing up for,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and it's three grand a year to shut down your
- 18:24Speaker 1: body's natural production forever. That is brutal.

- 18:55Speaker 1: you where you heard about them. Please support our show
- 18:57Speaker 1: and tell them we sent you. Yeah, that's what he's
- 19:00Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 19:02Speaker 4: That's what he said.
- 19:03Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Hey, we have good quotes from a story put out
- 19:09Speaker 1: in The Athletic by Evandralik and Ken Rosenthal. MLB based
- 19:12Speaker 1: coaches say the new rule to curb pitch tipping has
- 19:14Speaker 1: put them in harm's way. Aaron Boone said that exactly
- 19:19Speaker 1: in the quote in the story. They are in harm's way.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Bottom line. And by the way, we miss you. Aaron.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Come back on the show soon if you can. Here's
- 19:28Speaker 1: one from Quintin Barry. He said he's the cub third
- 19:32Speaker 1: base coach. He said, every third base coach, we've all
- 19:35Speaker 1: been talking about how you're constantly in danger. They have
- 19:38Speaker 1: to stay in their coach's box now and they can't
- 19:41Speaker 1: move away. For example, Sandy Alomar, who's the Cleveland first
- 19:45Speaker 1: base coach, said, it's a dangerous situation. Imagine Jose Ramirez,
- 19:49Speaker 1: HiT's up all one hundred and fifteen miles an hour,
- 19:51Speaker 1: pull side. You don't have time to react. And I'll
- 19:54Speaker 1: go back to Barry here.
- 19:55Speaker 4: He said.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You never get a chance to get out of there.
- 19:57Speaker 1: You can't get out of harms way ever. And I
- 19:58Speaker 1: get what they're trying to do, but you're not going
- 20:01Speaker 1: to stop anything by putting people in a box. He
- 20:04Speaker 1: essentially said, base coaches are still going to be watching
- 20:08Speaker 1: pictures and looking for tips even if you tell them
- 20:11Speaker 1: they can't take three steps to their left or right.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So what do you think about this? And is there
- 20:15Speaker 1: a solution to this?
- 20:19Speaker 4: Let them go where they want. I mean, just don't
- 20:21Speaker 4: I mean, just make sure if you're the pitcher, that
- 20:22Speaker 4: you have your own guys watch you in spring training
- 20:26Speaker 4: and stuff to watch you if you're tipping or not.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I mean, I never understood the base coach box thing anyways,
- 20:32Speaker 4: because I wouldn't want to be standing there, and God
- 20:34Speaker 4: forbid we have a situation like we did a few
- 20:36Speaker 4: years ago where a guy got hit and died because
- 20:38Speaker 4: he was close. And now that's why they have to
- 20:40Speaker 4: wear the helmet, a little teeny tiny helmet that doesn't
- 20:42Speaker 4: really cover their whole head anyways. So I think that, yeah,
- 20:48Speaker 4: I don't get it. It's just the rule to make
- 20:50Speaker 4: a rule to try to stop something. But I fully
- 20:53Speaker 4: expect unless some team really complains that the third base
- 20:56Speaker 4: coaches and the first base coaches are going to move around,
- 21:00Speaker 4: it'll be a year.
- 21:02Speaker 1: It'll be you think, what a year of what the
- 21:05Speaker 1: umpires smoked?
- 21:07Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, It'll be a year where the
- 21:08Speaker 4: umpires are like, no, you got to be in the box.
- 21:10Speaker 4: You got to be in the box. And then there's
- 21:12Speaker 4: gonna be you know, there's gonna be a few that
- 21:15Speaker 4: allow it to happen. But hey, don't don't get out
- 21:17Speaker 4: of control. Every step helps to me. I'm not worried
- 21:21Speaker 4: about the third base coaches as much, sorry Quinton Berry.
- 21:24Speaker 4: But they can move. They can move farther into foul territory,
- 21:29Speaker 4: they can move closer to you know, out of because
- 21:33Speaker 4: it's not just it's not a complete box, it's an
- 21:35Speaker 4: open box. Farther into foul territory. You just can't get
- 21:38Speaker 4: closer or farther back behind third, and those guys then
- 21:43Speaker 4: can move up as the runners coming to third to
- 21:46Speaker 4: be able to wave them in. First base coaches, you
- 21:48Speaker 4: got to be close because you're relaying the times to
- 21:51Speaker 4: the guy at first. You're doing, you're doing a lot
- 21:53Speaker 4: of stuff. Good first base coaches are always in there
- 21:56Speaker 4: with the with the runner, and if they get out
- 22:01Speaker 4: of there, if they have to be farther away, like
- 22:04Speaker 4: closer to the dugout so that they're out of harm's way,
- 22:07Speaker 4: they're just they're not able to do their job very well.
- 22:13Speaker 1: What about right now? Right now guys can't move. They're
- 22:18Speaker 1: going to be strict about it. It just got enforced, reinforced.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Do you think that it's a serious problem? Like when yes,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I just hope no one gets hurt, that's all. I
- 22:27Speaker 1: just hope no one gets hurt.
- 22:28Speaker 4: That's it. I just hope nobody gets hit and gets hurt.
- 22:30Speaker 4: And God forbid, was I think his name was Mike Coolbaugh,
- 22:33Speaker 4: the guy who unfortunately passed away from getting hit by
- 22:35Speaker 4: in a line drive. I hope nothing like that happens.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Because we talk about safety all the time on Major
- 22:41Speaker 4: League Baseball. But then we're doing things that people are
- 22:44Speaker 4: saying isn't safe. Then we move the coaches boxes. They
- 22:48Speaker 4: have to be farther down the line when the pitch
- 22:50Speaker 4: is made because some of the third basement get really close.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Third base coaches get really close and there's a guy
- 22:54Speaker 4: on second and they and they, you know, are worried
- 22:56Speaker 4: about the runner and stuff like that, or there's a
- 22:57Speaker 4: runner on third. So I mean, I don't know. I
- 23:01Speaker 4: just think this is this is silly, silly talk.
- 23:03Speaker 1: But what do I know if you were a commissioner
- 23:05Speaker 1: for a day and you have a number of people
- 23:07Speaker 1: within the league complaining about where bass coaches are staying,
- 23:10Speaker 1: tell their pitchers not to tip.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Huh case closed salt solf scout. It's it's a it's
- 23:25Speaker 4: a very it's a easy it's an easy solution. I
- 23:29Speaker 4: think it was Miles Michaelis who was saying, you know,
- 23:32Speaker 4: they're they were getting it from Okay, they're getting it
- 23:35Speaker 4: from over here, put it down, put it in whatever
- 23:41Speaker 4: it is, like, maybe get it here and then as
- 23:45Speaker 4: you're coming, as you're throwing the pitch, change it. Like
- 23:48Speaker 4: I don't know, I just I have a hard time
- 23:50Speaker 4: with a rule that you're moving somebody into harm's way,
- 23:54Speaker 4: Like they would never put a player into harm's way,
- 23:58Speaker 4: but they're willing to put the most underpaid coaches on
- 24:02Speaker 4: every staff into harm's way. I just I have a
- 24:06Speaker 4: hard I have a hard time with it.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I have a thought. We're going to talk to Rob
- 24:13Speaker 1: Freeman soon pitching Ninja, and within that conversation will go
- 24:17Speaker 1: over how pitching has advanced more than hitting based on
- 24:21Speaker 1: the tools that are available. Is it the worst thing
- 24:23Speaker 1: in the world if you catch a tip every once
- 24:27Speaker 1: in a while and a pitcher gets lit up and
- 24:29Speaker 1: the hitter gets an advantage. I mean, I know you
- 24:31Speaker 1: guys are hters, so you're probably gonna agree with this,
- 24:32Speaker 1: but you also were catchers, so you're looking out for
- 24:34Speaker 1: your pitcher. But it's not like everybody tips.
- 24:37Speaker 4: No, I mean some people think everybody tips. What they don't. No, listen,
- 24:41Speaker 4: if you're tipping, then you're tipping. And if people figure
- 24:43Speaker 4: it out, are smart enough figure it out, then good
- 24:45Speaker 4: for them. Then change it. But you also should be
- 24:47Speaker 4: self scouting and have If they're running an AI program
- 24:50Speaker 4: and you're doing something, you should be running a program
- 24:52Speaker 4: similar to figure it out. And now with MLB doing
- 24:56Speaker 4: all the same technology for all the teams, they all
- 24:58Speaker 4: should have the same programs. They also be able to
- 25:00Speaker 4: look at each other and say, hey, we shouldn't do
- 25:02Speaker 4: this anymore. So Ryan Dempster, where he did his glove
- 25:04Speaker 4: thing every time he threw a pitch. I mean, there
- 25:07Speaker 4: are ways to avoid. This is not the coaches, okay.
- 25:11Speaker 1: So just to be clear, it sounds like a j said, yes, Kratz,
- 25:15Speaker 1: if you were a commissioner and let's say you come
- 25:18Speaker 1: in today, you start today, and they just enforced that rule,
- 25:21Speaker 1: you would get rid of the rule with the base
- 25:23Speaker 1: coaches and be like, yeah, I hear you. This is
- 25:25Speaker 1: too dangerous. We're overthinking this. You can go back to
- 25:29Speaker 1: roaming around outside of the coach's box.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Or or I'm okay with saying, hey, you know what,
- 25:36Speaker 4: let's let's keep it. Let's let's keep you in that box,
- 25:40Speaker 4: or a little closer, like to see an actual tip
- 25:43Speaker 4: from a pitcher. It's here, it's there, whatever it is.
- 25:48Speaker 4: You got to get a little bit far farther down there.
- 25:50Speaker 4: So it's okay if you're like, you don't have to
- 25:53Speaker 4: quite you in the box. We want you to be safe,
- 25:55Speaker 4: but tell the umpires, hey, you know what, just just
- 25:58Speaker 4: peek at it a little bit. You're not you're not
- 26:00Speaker 4: looking at a whole lot at that time. Keep them
- 26:03Speaker 4: closer to the box, just so they're not confined to
- 26:06Speaker 4: a box. I don't want anybody getting hurt, and I
- 26:09Speaker 4: feel like that's what's going to happen.
