- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The imprinting of the Stigmata of Saint Francis, September 17 in the year of our Lord, 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, two years before his death, St. Francis retired to Mount Alvernia where he began a fast of forty days in honor of St. Michael the Archangel.
- 0:38And lo, in the midst of his meditation he saw a figure like a Seraphim with six wings dazzling and burning whose feet and hands were nailed to a cross. Aware that suffering is incompatible with the immortality of a Seraphic spirit he then understood that he would become more like Jesus and bear his cross after him, not by physical martyrdom but by a mystical kindling of divine love. And in order that this crucified love might become an example to us all, five wounds resembling those of Jesus on the cross appeared on his feet, hands, and side. From the latter blood flowed abundantly. The facts were so fully authenticated later that Benedict XI ordered them to be commemorated every year And Paul the fifth to kindle in the faithful the love of Jesus crucified extended the feast to the whole church.
- 1:56In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. God forbid that I should make a display of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ through which the world stands crucified to me and I to the world. Loud is my cry to the Lord, the prayer I utter for the Lord's mercy.
- 2:30Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. God forbid that I should make a display of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ through which the world stands crucified to me and I to the world. The Collect. Let us pray.
- 3:05O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst reproduce in the flesh of the most blessed Francis the sacred marks of thy own sufferings so that in a world grown cold, our hearts might be filled with burning love of thee. Graciously enable us by His merits and prayers to bear the cross without faltering and to bring forth worthy fruits of penitence. Thou who art God living and reigning with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians.
- 3:54Brethren, God forbid that I should make a display of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ through which the world stands crucified to me and I to the world. Circumcision means nothing. The want of it means nothing. When a man is in Christ Jesus, there has been a new creation. Peace and pardon to all those who follow this rule to God's true Israel.
- 4:31Spare me, all of you, any further anxieties. Already I bear the scars of the Lord Jesus printed on my body. Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. The gradual, right reason is on the good man's lips.
- 5:01Well weighed are all his counsels. His steps never falter because the law of God rules in his heart. Alleluia. Alleluia. Francis poor and humble enters heaven of rich man, and heavenly music does him honor.
- 5:23Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, If any man has a mind to come my way, let him renounce self and take up his cross and follow me. The man who tries to save his life shall lose it. It is the man who loses his life for my sake that will secure it.
- 5:57How is a man the better for it if he gains the whole world at the cost of losing his own soul? For a man's soul, what price can be high enough? The Son of Man will come hereafter in his Father's glory with his angels about him, and he will recompense everyone then according to his works. The Offertory. My faithfulness and mercy shall go with him.
- 6:32As my champion, he shall rise to greatness. The Secret. Hallow the gifts we are dedicating to thee, O Lord, and at the intercession of blessed Francis, cleanse us from all stain of sin through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 7:41We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 8:12Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He was a faithful and wise steward, one whom his master entrusted with the care of the household to give them their allowance of food at the appointed time. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 8:39O God, who didst by manifold revelation show forth in thy blessed confessor Francis the wondrous mysteries of the cross. We pray thee grant that we may ever follow the example of his self sacrifice and find strength in constant meditation upon that cross through our Lord Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 9:34Saint Francis, pray for us. Amen.
