- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Our last two segments feature Maggie Veoni, who has seen
- 0:05Speaker 1: every Ukon game like I have this seasonct insider dot
- 0:09Speaker 1: Com basically most of the newspapers across the state, including
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Journal Inquirer in the in the greater Hartford area. Maggie,
- 0:17Speaker 1: first of all, thanks for doing this. Now you're in
- 0:20Speaker 1: Cincinnati with us. You went to the Montgomery in I
- 0:23Speaker 1: guess for the first time. Now, that wasn't on my
- 0:25Speaker 1: radar of this trip. I just felt like I saw
- 0:27Speaker 1: McCormick and Schmid's downtown. So that's where dem and I went.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But what was your first experience to Montgomery in the
- 0:32Speaker 1: boathouse right along the river. What was that like for you?
- 0:35Speaker 2: She went to the original one in Montgomery. Okay, that's
- 0:39Speaker 2: the one that Vicky told me to go to, so
- 0:41Speaker 2: I did. But it was delicious, new walk in and
- 0:45Speaker 2: it's just like Ohio Sports Membobilia everywhere, like every walls
- 0:49Speaker 2: covered in it and it was huge. I had the
- 0:52Speaker 2: pork rooms and they were delicious. Bart off the bone,
- 0:57Speaker 2: super meati, super flavorful, had a sweet potato, which is
- 0:59Speaker 2: my fait. It was really good.
- 1:03Speaker 3: It was. It made Ohio beautiful.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Maggie Veoni food critic. We got Dan Connelly, the ice
- 1:10Speaker 1: cream critic. Now you're the food critic, so we're good
- 1:12Speaker 1: on it. I mean you can be.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I will take that title. All right.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Eight games into the season, what are you some of
- 1:18Speaker 1: your overall thoughts on what this team's done so far?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Because outside of the fourth quarter against Louisville and the
- 1:24Speaker 1: second half against Michigan, they have not really been challenged.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, they look really good.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I think it was yesterday or twodays ago at the
- 1:33Speaker 2: the South Florida coach Michelle Woods Baxter, so that they
- 1:36Speaker 2: look even better than they did last year in terms
- 1:38Speaker 2: of Yukon and I think they the combination of Sarah
- 1:42Speaker 2: and Asy is just so lethal itself. But then you
- 1:45Speaker 2: add in Blanca, you add in Sarah Williams.
- 1:46Speaker 3: You're adding in now you know, Kayley, Heckel and KK.
- 1:50Speaker 3: You're adding all these pieces that are such.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Good additions that the mesh so well with Easy and
- 1:56Speaker 2: Sarah and doesn't have to be just Asy and Sarah
- 1:59Speaker 2: every night like we've seen the past two games, right,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I think Azy had ten points, Sarah had fourteen. You know,
- 2:05Speaker 2: they don't have to go out and shoot light out
- 2:06Speaker 2: every single day. And they have these shooters now that
- 2:08Speaker 2: can they can like that jump in with their numbers
- 2:12Speaker 2: called They don't miss it beat, even though maybe their
- 2:14Speaker 2: roster is young and a lot of the new pieces,
- 2:17Speaker 2: they just they act like they they perform. I said,
- 2:20Speaker 2: they've been to this whole team together for a long
- 2:22Speaker 2: long time, if that makes sense. I've been really impressed.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think everyone looks better than they did last year.
- 2:27Speaker 2: KK looks way improved, Asy looks way improved. Sarah looks
- 2:31Speaker 2: crazily even better. And we didn't think that it was possible.
- 2:34Speaker 3: What she does?
- 2:37Speaker 1: You know, I think of Sarah and I think of
- 2:39Speaker 1: the closest thing to Maya Moore since Maya Moore in
- 2:42Speaker 1: a Yukon uniform and in a game against USF Tuesday night,
- 2:47Speaker 1: she's diving on the floor going for loose balls. Your
- 2:49Speaker 1: best player's doing that, that's a great sign.
- 2:52Speaker 3: She did that twice, I think in the first quarter. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 3: just threw her body at it.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I was just like, oh, what can't does girl do
- 2:58Speaker 2: like she is just she's clearly the front runner for
- 3:02Speaker 2: National Player of the Year, and rightfully so.
- 3:05Speaker 3: And this is just near two.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I as a viewer of basketball and fan of basketball,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I am just excited to see what year three in
- 3:11Speaker 2: your four brings.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's scary what Sarah can do. The thing about
- 3:16Speaker 1: this Yukon team is the depth that they have. I
- 3:19Speaker 1: know that this has been talked about. I think you
- 3:21Speaker 1: wrote about this this week, is the depth. The second
- 3:24Speaker 1: team can be as productive with the right combinations. But
- 3:27Speaker 1: certainly when you're going eight maybe nine deep, with the
- 3:30Speaker 1: talent they have coming off the bench and the constant
- 3:32Speaker 1: pressure that they bring, which Gino likes to do, that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: usually a pretty good sign. And they've shown that so
- 3:38Speaker 1: far absolutely.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I mean, look at Ali'sabelle, right, She's come off the
- 3:41Speaker 2: bench and just thrived and this role as an energy starter,
- 3:46Speaker 2: as a spark plug. I think having her, having Kaylee,
- 3:50Speaker 2: having all these pieces that have some experience another built right,
- 3:54Speaker 2: Ali played last year, but a lot of ton same
- 3:56Speaker 2: with Kaylee at USC. It just helps that their depth
- 3:59Speaker 2: is quality depth, not just quantity death and you Gino's
- 4:03Speaker 2: mentioned that a lot of having actual eeasable pieces that
- 4:06Speaker 2: can fit in anywhere. Right, he can plug them in
- 4:08Speaker 2: with Sarah and easy, he can plug them in alone.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Maybe Caroline who has experience, so that death I think
- 4:14Speaker 2: is probably arguably their most important piece this season.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You know, I told Gino I think opening night that
- 4:20Speaker 1: Sarah will probably lead this team and assists by the
- 4:22Speaker 1: time the season's over, and so far that's the case.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But even with Paige and Caitlin Shed and God, they're
- 4:27Speaker 1: still averaging close to twenty four assists per game. That's impressive.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's I think South Florida was seven
- 4:33Speaker 2: straight games with twenty or more assists, right, which is
- 4:37Speaker 2: just like mind boggling. They're moving the ball so well.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I asked Sarah about it after South Florida and she said,
- 4:43Speaker 2: you know, this team, they're smart teams. They make the
- 4:46Speaker 2: right reads. They have a lot of chemistry. They're able
- 4:49Speaker 2: to know where each other wants the ball, where each
- 4:51Speaker 2: other is going to be to get the ball. And
- 4:53Speaker 2: I think that's kind of rare of a team that
- 4:56Speaker 2: has this many new pieces and as many young pieces.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You're right here, twenty assists plus and seven straight games
- 5:03Speaker 1: I might get for Sunday.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Look at that, I read.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my cheat sheet. Maybe you should take a
- 5:08Speaker 1: picture and share it with the folks for a news
- 5:11Speaker 1: story someday, or at least on social media, like I do.
- 5:14Speaker 1: What are your thoughts at asy so far? Finally healthy.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You've seen the benefits of her being in the gym,
- 5:20Speaker 1: not rehabbing per se, but just getting herself in the
- 5:24Speaker 1: best shape of her life. I mean, this girl's got guns.
- 5:27Speaker 1: If you haven't noticed, I like that.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, she looks you can just feel the confidence excluding
- 5:34Speaker 2: that Kim knaws that word off of her like it's
- 5:36Speaker 2: just like it's so like infascuating and just what's the
- 5:42Speaker 2: word I'm looking for, Like just contagious? Right Like, you
- 5:44Speaker 2: can see that when she walks around, her shoulders are back.
- 5:47Speaker 2: She doesn't have any doubt in her game, any doubt
- 5:49Speaker 2: in her knee Like. She looks like she's walking and
- 5:53Speaker 2: talking as if she is a fifth year senior, right Like,
- 5:55Speaker 2: she looks like she knows what she's doing.
- 5:57Speaker 3: She's happy to wear the.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Responsibility of being the leader, of being a Phisier senior,
- 6:03Speaker 2: of having all these eyes on her.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:04Speaker 2: You know, she's expected to go one, two, three, four
- 6:07Speaker 2: in the in the in the lottery draft in April,
- 6:10Speaker 2: So I feel like she has a lock this new
- 6:13Speaker 2: part of her game.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I think winning final foremost outstanding.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Player have really helped booster confidence and proving her look
- 6:19Speaker 2: like you are better and you are back right like you.
- 6:22Speaker 3: This is the easy.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Fund that we all thought was coming to Yukon, that
- 6:25Speaker 2: did come to Yukon for a brief minute and then
- 6:27Speaker 2: obviously got sidelined with the injuries, but has really come
- 6:31Speaker 2: back from those injuries even better than what we thought.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Maggie will wrap up the show with me in our
- 6:37Speaker 1: next next segment when we come back and is the
- 6:38Speaker 1: Ukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show here on Learfield Back in
- 6:41Speaker 1: a minute
