- 0:15From collector to promoter, I want to
- 0:18welcome my good buddy Greg, who is the
- 0:21showrunner for one of the best cons of
- 0:23the year here in the East Coast, King
- 0:25Con. So, Greg, welcome aboard. Thank you
- 0:26for doing the podcast, my man. Hey,
- 0:28thank you so much for having me, man.
- 0:30And thank you for all the support with
- 0:31the show, coming by, doing the uh
- 0:34sponsorship part. I mean, that was that
- 0:36was great. And uh I really appreciate
- 0:37your support.
- 0:39>> No, man. I I appreciate it. Uh I've been
- 0:41coming to your show, I want to say, for
- 0:43five years. How how long has the show
- 0:45been going on?
- 0:46>> Uh the first show was the fall,
- 0:48September of 2021. So, okay. Right. Kind
- 0:52of in like the the heart of the COVID
- 0:54times.
- 0:55>> Yeah. and the collectible boommed.
- 0:58>> I I want to say it's probably like four
- 0:59times then because I know I missed the
- 1:01last two years because I've been
- 1:02coaching basketball. But this year,
- 1:04fortunately, I was still coaching
- 1:06basketball, but it actually ended up
- 1:08working out well because the game was
- 1:09until nighttime. So, I was able to come
- 1:11in the morning till about 1:00. But I
- 1:13think a lot of people, especially
- 1:14myself, I want to get to know you a
- 1:16little bit. Uh obviously you're a comic
- 1:19collector just like I am. What kind of
- 1:21comics are you into?
- 1:23>> Well, yeah. I mean, I I always tell
- 1:25people I'm a collector first. So, the
- 1:28show I kind of approach at like uh an
- 1:31angle as a collector. I always try to
- 1:33approach it as the shows that I liked
- 1:34going to, the type of vendors I like to
- 1:37see there, uh the types of books that I,
- 1:40you know, look for. Um, and just the
- 1:43overall experience, you know, like I
- 1:44like the big cons. I've been going to,
- 1:46you know, New York Comic-Con since
- 1:48really like maybe a couple years before
- 1:50I feel like it really changed during
- 1:52like the Walking Dead era where it just
- 1:54like, you know, AMC. It was like just
- 1:56this huge explosion of The Walking Dead
- 1:58at New York Comic-Con and it just got so
- 2:00crazy. But I always liked those small
- 2:02comic cons, uh, conventions in like, uh,
- 2:04the hotels that I used to go to as a
- 2:07kid. Um, but to answer your question,
- 2:09um, I got into comics based off the 1990
- 2:14Impel Marvel cards. Uh, so I just
- 2:16collected like a lot of first
- 2:18appearances. Um, and that's how I really
- 2:20got into uh, collecting was hunting
- 2:23after first appearances like a lot of
- 2:25people.
- 2:26>> So like did were you ever into it as a
- 2:29kid or just mainly as an adult?
- 2:32>> I was into I mean I had the death of
- 2:34Superman. I had the Infinity Gauntlet.
- 2:36That was the stuff that I liked as a
- 2:38kid, but I didn't really collect a lot
- 2:40of physical comics. Uh, as a kid, I
- 2:43collected this the cards, the Marvel
- 2:45cards.
- 2:46>> Yeah.
- 2:46>> Uh, I was very into the video games and
- 2:48toys. Uh, but I was never and I still am
- 2:51not a very good reader. Um, I fall
- 2:53asleep when I read. My mind wanders. Um,
- 2:57I do love the stories. Uh, I try to to
- 3:00to read as much as I can. Um, but I am a
- 3:04collector. like I like collecting stuff.
- 3:06Uh so I got into that mainly. I started
- 3:09really collecting comics around 2003
- 3:12when uh Jim Lee came out with Hush and I
- 3:15was like full-on hunting down
- 3:17>> that whole series. Um but as a kid I was
- 3:20mainly into the characters, their
- 3:22powers, their abilities. Uh this I was
- 3:25into the story lines, but again I would
- 3:26just kind of have people tell me about
- 3:29them or read the backs of the cards and
- 3:31stuff like that.
- 3:33So 2003 is like right when I got back
- 3:35into it as like to me that's like a
- 3:37couple years after I got graduated
- 3:40college. I I finally got my own place
- 3:42and I started having a little bit of
- 3:43money. So I started going back into it
- 3:45around that time frame as well and
- 3:47that's when CGC came about. So around
- 3:49that time frame is when I first started
- 3:51like submitting a book for the first
- 3:52time, stuff like that. So it's it's fun.
- 3:55It's fun to see somebody kind of get
- 3:56into it for the first time as I'm
- 3:58getting in and for the second time. So
- 4:00that's pretty cool. But um what you
- 4:02mentioned other things like like cards,
- 4:03Marvel cards and stuff like that. As a
- 4:05kid, were you like really into anything?
- 4:08I mean, before we started filming, we
- 4:09talked a little bit about like TMNT and
- 4:11Ghostbusters. Was what was your main
- 4:12thing when you were a kid?
- 4:14>> Well, the first thing I was into was uh
- 4:16video games. Like I was playing
- 4:18Nintendo, obsessed with Nintendo. You
- 4:20know, I had an older brother who had
- 4:21friends and I would just like watch them
- 4:23play. And I had cousins that were uh
- 4:26older that lived in Staten Island and um
- 4:29Long Island and they would be they would
- 4:31have Nintendo and they they would have
- 4:32uh you know like pizza shops we'd go to
- 4:35that had like Street Fighter arcades and
- 4:36that was the first time I was introduced
- 4:37to stuff like that.
- 4:39>> So I was really into like video games uh
- 4:41before anything else. Um, I remember
- 4:45watching them play like Mike Tyson's
- 4:46Punch Out and I would do a lot of
- 4:47watching and uh until I was comfortable
- 4:50to actually pick up the controller and
- 4:52and you know play against you know Mike
- 4:54Tyson which was like absolutely
- 4:56terrifying as a kid. Um,
- 4:59so, so yeah, first the first thing was
- 5:02uh was video games. That was that that
- 5:03kicked it off. And then um I was really
- 5:07into TMNT toys and like the real
- 5:09Ghostbusters action figures. Um, and
- 5:11I've collected some of those. Uh, I only
- 5:13have so much space though. If I could, I
- 5:15would collect everything.
- 5:17>> Um, but the toys I don't really collect
- 5:19that much. I have a few figures. um like
- 5:22a graded Casey Jones from the 88, you
- 5:25know, series or 90 when whenever that
- 5:27exact figure came out
- 5:28>> in that series. But uh yeah, I was
- 5:31before
- 5:33getting into collecting comics, I was
- 5:36very into the toys and and video game
- 5:38scene and then I got into the Marvel
- 5:40cards in like 1990.
- 5:41>> Yeah, I think a lot of people got into
- 5:43the Marvel cards during that time frame.
- 5:45I remember like in 1990 for me like I
- 5:47was just about to go to to high school.
- 5:5091 I went to high school. God, I'm old.
- 5:51But like around that time frame, I was
- 5:53in eighth grade around that time frame
- 5:54and I had a lot of friends between that
- 5:57um like they started releasing all those
- 5:59those Marvel toys and those DC toys
- 6:01again. Again 89 was the Batman movie. So
- 6:04it was really really hot around that
- 6:06time. So again, same time frame. But
- 6:08that's cool. I mean like you still
- 6:09collect all that stuff today, you think
- 6:10or no?
- 6:12>> Yeah. I mean I have sealed boxes of the
- 6:14I don't have a sealed box of the N of
- 6:16the Impel the 1990. I have the second
- 6:18series and the third series. I am always
- 6:20looking on eBay for like a nice minty
- 6:23box of the original. I'm looking at I
- 6:25always look for the holograms graded um
- 6:27because those are so tough to grade. But
- 6:29that was the first experience I had of
- 6:31like really chasing anything was those
- 6:34holograms. I don't know if you remember.
- 6:36>> Yeah.
- 6:36>> You know, those those are still awesome.
- 6:38They just look so cool. Like the
- 6:39Wolverine and the Silver Surfer and the
- 6:41Cosmic Spider-Man. And I just remember,
- 6:44you know, as a kid going to these shows
- 6:46and and um trying to feel like the
- 6:48packs. It did absolutely nothing. I
- 6:50never was able to, but you think you
- 6:51could feel like the side of it, you
- 6:53know. Um but it's just so funny, you
- 6:55know, today it's kind of the same thing.
- 6:57We got people going to to Targets
- 6:59unfortunately and like weighing stuff.
- 7:01Um
- 7:02>> but yeah, cards are bigger than they
- 7:05were when I was a kid now, you know.
- 7:07>> Yeah, absolutely. And when I when I was
- 7:09at the show this year, we had about like
- 7:1010 minutes of of talking before the show
- 7:12started, you and I. And I I know you
- 7:14mentioned that like uh one you're you
- 7:16were a WWF fan because you saw my video.
- 7:18You didn't know I was a fan. So uh like
- 7:20what did you collect those figures
- 7:22growing up or anything related to
- 7:23wrestling?
- 7:24>> Yeah. Yeah. So I got into wrestling. I
- 7:26mean my family we my my grandma and my
- 7:30my dad and my mom would you know I would
- 7:32just see these figures we had around
- 7:34like they were like bath toys to me.
- 7:36Hulk Hogan, Iron Chic, stuff like that.
- 7:38Like the old rubber ones.
- 7:41But I really didn't know. I mean, I was
- 7:43barely like a conscious human being at
- 7:45that point, you know? I just saw they
- 7:46were there. Um,
- 7:48>> and but I really started getting into
- 7:50wrestling around like '92, 93. Um, I
- 7:54remember I feel like one of the first
- 7:56things I saw on TV, there was like a a
- 7:59match of Razor Raone versus Undertaker.
- 8:01And I thought they were I mean
- 8:02Undertaker was just like so so amazing.
- 8:04like I was terrified of him,
- 8:06>> but then I remember really uh being
- 8:08traumatized by the Papa Shango Curse on
- 8:11the Ultimate Warrior.
- 8:13>> Uh, and so yeah, I got really into that,
- 8:15but then I got really into like Bret
- 8:17Hart and I I really kicked it into gear
- 8:19around like 93 94. The first
- 8:22pay-per-view I ever ordered was the uh
- 8:24'94 Royal Rumble. I had a friend over. I
- 8:26was like eight or nine. That was the
- 8:28double win with Lex and Brett.
- 8:30>> Yeah. Um, I would started going to like
- 8:33Wrestlemania parties. Wrestlemania 10 is
- 8:35like one of my favorite Wrestlemania.
- 8:36Owen verse Brett. That whole storyline
- 8:39was is still like like so like
- 8:43solidified into my childhood as a
- 8:44wrestling fan. Um, Yokazuna being the
- 8:47bad guy. But yes, to answer your
- 8:49question, I have a bunch of Hasbros. Um,
- 8:53and I have a couple that are signed. I
- 8:54have a Bret Hart. Uh they're all this
- 8:57the sealed the Mox uh mint on card and I
- 8:59have a Deviosi signed one. I have a a
- 9:02Bret Hart signed one. Unfortunately like
- 9:05the Razors I couldn't get to. I've met
- 9:07Scott Hall. He was amazing. Uh awesome
- 9:09guy, but I didn't have like the figures
- 9:11at that time for him to sign stuff like
- 9:12that. It's so unfortunate because a lot
- 9:15of these guys passed away.
- 9:24All right. So, you are obviously a
- 9:26collector just like I am, just like a
- 9:27lot of people out there who listen to
- 9:28the podcast. So, how did you go from
- 9:31being a collector into wanting to put on
- 9:33your own show?
- 9:35>> Well, it was the uh man, it was around,
- 9:39you know, like I said, 2020, 2021,
- 9:42I was uh, you know, collecting again and
- 9:45collecting a little more heavily. Uh, I
- 9:47was older. I had a little bit more money
- 9:50from work and stuff like that. So, I was
- 9:52actually able to obtain um some bigger
- 9:55keys and stuff like that. So, I was just
- 9:58into the scene a little bit more. And
- 10:00then um
- 10:02uh I guess you know around the COVID
- 10:04period, everything was just going so
- 10:05well. And I felt like I wanted to just
- 10:09put on a local show that was uh kind of
- 10:13based off of like the people that I knew
- 10:15on Instagram. Um, I had a good uh
- 10:18relationship with a lot of people and I
- 10:20wanted to get all like kind of the
- 10:21Instagram community together and run a
- 10:24show that wasn't a huge mega, you know,
- 10:27uh, show. Um, you know, my first show,
- 10:30we didn't have artists for the first
- 10:31couple of years. I just wanted it to be
- 10:33like a show you could go to, like an old
- 10:34school style comic show in and out, find
- 10:37what you're looking for, talk to and
- 10:39hang out with the people you know from
- 10:40Instagram that you may not have ever met
- 10:42before, but you see them on all the
- 10:43time. And uh we found like a Holiday Inn
- 10:46that was close by and uh you know that
- 10:49was that.
- 10:51>> So was it obviously you're saying you
- 10:53didn't have artists. It was more of a
- 10:54basic just a comic show. What was the
- 10:56space like? Obviously I've been to the
- 10:57the one at Eastland a bunch of times but
- 11:00the one in the Holiday Inn, what was the
- 11:01space like? Is it comparable to the one
- 11:03we were just at?
- 11:04>> No, it was it was small. It was and it
- 11:07it was broken up between a couple rooms
- 11:09too. Um it was a nice space for the
- 11:11first one, but it was like crowded. Um,
- 11:15and the parking situation was a little
- 11:17tough, uh, because a bunch of people
- 11:19came. Um, but yeah, the the two separate
- 11:23room thing didn't really work out. Um, I
- 11:27mean, it still could, you know, for a
- 11:29smaller show. I mean, I I went to a card
- 11:30show at that same exact spot on
- 11:32Wednesday. Uh, and it and it worked.
- 11:34It's tight, but um, it was it was the
- 11:37good perfect, you know, stepping stone.
- 11:40>> So, any issue I hate to bring this up,
- 11:42it's good conversation. any issues with
- 11:44that first show? Was it like daunting?
- 11:46Were you like nervous? Was it any
- 11:47struggles?
- 11:49>> Yeah, I mean I'm nervous all the time.
- 11:50I'm like a nervous person. I you know
- 11:53I'm always anxious. I'm always thinking
- 11:54like but that's kind of what helps me
- 11:56keep the show running kind of smoothly
- 11:58is because I'm always my personality is
- 12:00like what I'm trying to think of what
- 12:02could go wrong. You know what I mean?
- 12:03And obviously you can't please everyone.
- 12:05So I do my best. But um the first show I
- 12:10was just like kind of I would wake up in
- 12:12the morning I remember and be like why
- 12:14did I like why did I think I this was
- 12:16like a good idea. You know what I mean?
- 12:18Being like nervous. I can't believe like
- 12:20one one morning I'm going to wake up and
- 12:22this I'm going to have to put on this
- 12:24event. You know what I mean? Where it's
- 12:26like fun to think about this stuff. You
- 12:28know you could think about hitting a
- 12:29home run in the World Series all you
- 12:31want but when you step up to the plate
- 12:33you got to actually do it. You know what
- 12:34I mean? So, it kind of felt like that on
- 12:36a on a much lesser scale. Um, but yeah,
- 12:41I mean, even to this day, I get nervous
- 12:43like what if no one should I I'll have
- 12:44these anxiety dreams that I'm setting it
- 12:47like first of all that I never I didn't
- 12:49promote it. It's in the wrong space and
- 12:52no one like so like no one knew about
- 12:54it. So, like I'm putting on this show
- 12:55and and people are like, "Oh, but you
- 12:57know, I didn't even know it was today.
- 12:58You didn't tell anyone the dates." Stuff
- 13:00like that. So, yeah, it it's very uh
- 13:03it's it can be very stressful and
- 13:04there's a lot of anxiety behind it, at
- 13:06least for me.
- 13:08>> Is there like for that first show, was
- 13:10there like that one thing that was like
- 13:11you kind of realized after the fact and
- 13:13you fixed it later on or no?
- 13:16>> Um I think it took a a couple shows in
- 13:19to um even even still like now you learn
- 13:23from every show. This last show was one
- 13:25that I felt like really like encompassed
- 13:28everything that I wanted out of a show.
- 13:30Um because I always felt like I could do
- 13:31more on on one sense. But uh the first
- 13:34show I think we needed a space that had
- 13:37some better parking um because that was
- 13:39people kept coming in being like just so
- 13:41you know I couldn't like it took forever
- 13:42to park and parking is like a huge deal
- 13:44which I've
- 13:45>> Yeah.
- 13:45>> Yeah. for people, free parking, enough
- 13:48spaces. Even I went to a show a couple
- 13:50weeks ago and it was out in Montlair and
- 13:53I couldn't for the life of me find
- 13:56parking and it was just like, man, like
- 13:58I don't think I'd come back to this, you
- 14:00know, because of the parking. Um,
- 14:04>> I was going to say you rectified that
- 14:05because the place that you you've had
- 14:07the show for the for the past however
- 14:08many so years. I know that you did the
- 14:10one time up by me, but uh they got a ton
- 14:13of parking. So that's that's always been
- 14:14good since you've been there.
- 14:16>> Yeah. Yeah. They have like 900 spots and
- 14:19it's just now there's like it's in New
- 14:21Jersey and I'm sure you know there's
- 14:23just a lot of competition. There's a lot
- 14:25of people coming out, especially on the
- 14:26card scene, not as much on on the
- 14:28comics, but it's hard to find spaces
- 14:30that are not already taken or booked or
- 14:33you're not I mean, there'll be
- 14:36>> two comic shows maybe one day and like
- 14:38four card shows, you know, and there's
- 14:41only so many people that you could try
- 14:42to get. So, uh it's just it's just
- 14:45becoming increasingly difficult to
- 14:47compete um in this state at least.
- 14:50>> Yeah. Can we pull that back the curtain
- 14:53a little bit? I could ask you a couple
- 14:54questions about running the actual show,
- 14:56like what goes into running a comic
- 14:59show, even though on your level, I know
- 15:00it's a smaller show, but kind of what
- 15:02goes into it for people out there who
- 15:03don't know.
- 15:04>> Um, basically, you want to try to just,
- 15:08you know, you got to you got to, you
- 15:10know, I like to have vendors there that
- 15:14I purchase from and have experiences
- 15:17with because I want that experience. I
- 15:19want to know firsthand like what kind of
- 15:21experience the attendees are going to
- 15:22have. And that's not saying that if I've
- 15:24never done business with you or anything
- 15:25like that and and you don't, you know,
- 15:27>> it's just I don't do like a general sign
- 15:29up form because I like to kind of curate
- 15:31>> the people that are going to be there
- 15:32and I know what they're going to have
- 15:33and I know the type of people they are.
- 15:35It just makes me feel more comfortable
- 15:36as a showrunner. Um so it's kind of the
- 15:39vendor aspect
- 15:41um that goes into that. Obviously you
- 15:44have to negotiate with the hotel, you
- 15:47have to you have to have a floor plan.
- 15:50That was something that was a big
- 15:51struggle. Um because I'm not very good
- 15:54with like I I I could say I've gotten
- 15:57better, but off the bat I didn't think
- 15:59I'd be good at like, you know, all the
- 16:01measuring that goes into it and making
- 16:03sure people have enough space. It's not
- 16:04just like you don't just throw out and
- 16:06just like it just doesn't work. You
- 16:07don't just have tables and set them up.
- 16:08You especially with comics because
- 16:10people have the the walls, you know, and
- 16:12they need a certain amount of space, you
- 16:14know, from the table to the wall. So
- 16:17there's a lot of like physical
- 16:19organization, mental organization, um
- 16:22numbers games, um making sure that you
- 16:26leave enough room for the vendors to do
- 16:27well, you don't lose money. The it's not
- 16:30too expensive for the attendees. It's
- 16:32just like an all-encompassing
- 16:35um you know organized process that uh it
- 16:38it takes a lot even though it's one day
- 16:40once a year you're kind of timing it
- 16:43throughout like throughout the year it's
- 16:44like the three men swap will happen and
- 16:46I'm like okay that's like
- 16:48>> that's done with the what's next
- 16:50terrific you know once terrific usually
- 16:54done and I'm not you know this that's a
- 16:55huge show you know I'm not saying
- 16:57anything as far as like comparison but
- 16:58as far as timeline goes okay
- 17:01>> the summer's October basically. Now I
- 17:03got to start ramping up and I like to
- 17:05usually have an announcement about the
- 17:06next show around like Labor Day.
- 17:10>> Yeah.
- 17:11>> Yeah. Like how like obviously we last
- 17:14month or or I forgot was it last month?
- 17:15Was it the beginning of of March?
- 17:17Beginning of March. It was right
- 17:19>> the show. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So how long
- 17:21how long before you start going and
- 17:23preparing the next one? I'm already kind
- 17:26of thinking about the next one before,
- 17:29you know, like the current one's done.
- 17:31You know what I mean? Especially because
- 17:32I do all those kind of those themes, you
- 17:34know, like with the graphics, which I
- 17:36that's the part that I have a lot of fun
- 17:38with because it helps me bring back like
- 17:40that nostalgia aspect like the Mortal
- 17:42Kombat, we've done Rocky, we've done
- 17:45Predator, all all that stuff that, you
- 17:47know, kind of isn't always comic
- 17:49related. Like I my friend uh who comes
- 17:52to the show with his kids was like
- 17:53should I dress them up as like Scorpion
- 17:55and Subzero? I'm not really
- 17:56understanding the Mortal Kombat aspect
- 17:58of it here. Like what's the like what
- 18:01what does this have to do with more? I'm
- 18:02just like it's just the nostalgia thing.
- 18:04It's just that's what I grew up liking
- 18:06and it's fun to put the gorilla theme
- 18:09into different you know arc styles and
- 18:13themes. That's one of the best things
- 18:15that I think you've done a really good
- 18:16job of because every year you're kind of
- 18:18waiting to see what that next show is
- 18:20going to kind of feature and you're
- 18:21going to do. So like I remember the year
- 18:23the year before the one year was like
- 18:24Miami Vice or No, it was um
- 18:26>> it was uh Vice City.
- 18:28>> Yeah, it was that. So I mean that was a
- 18:29good one. Wasn't there like um
- 18:31>> the one before that? I'm forgetting.
- 18:33There was just the one where the King
- 18:34Kong was wearing the crown but he was
- 18:36just in the circle. I forgot. That was
- 18:37the one a couple years ago. I forgot.
- 18:39>> There was like an original one. Yeah.
- 18:41And then the second one, he's like, it's
- 18:43kind of like the first one, but he's
- 18:44holding out like a a number two. And
- 18:46that was kind of based off like the
- 18:48Ghostbusters 2 emblem where he's putting
- 18:50the two out. And then three was the
- 18:51Rocky 3.
- 18:53>> And then four was the uh the Predator
- 18:56where he's on top of the buildings, you
- 18:57know, stuff like that. So, it's kind of
- 18:59just gotten a little more detailed and
- 19:00fun each time. And uh
- 19:03>> last question on like the setup and
- 19:05putting your stuff through the con for
- 19:07now, but like what do you think the
- 19:08hardest part about putting a show
- 19:09together is?
- 19:12Um,
- 19:14I guess it's like uh the hardest part,
- 19:18the most stressful part for me. I mean,
- 19:20some people might find like the hardest
- 19:22part like actually organizing
- 19:25everything, getting everyone together as
- 19:26far as the on the vendor side or
- 19:28affording it, stuff like that. Um,
- 19:30because it is expensive. But the hardest
- 19:33part I think is um trying to get as many
- 19:36people through the door as possible
- 19:38because it's comes down to one day. It's
- 19:41New Jersey, you know, the weather is
- 19:43just nuts. You know, like two weeks
- 19:45before this last show, there was like a
- 19:47blizzard, you know, with like 13 inches
- 19:50or more of snow.
- 19:52>> Um I had put road signs out and then
- 19:55they all got destroyed basically. So I
- 19:57luckily I ordered enough that I went
- 19:59back out and put them out again. Um so
- 20:02it just it's just like the
- 20:03unpredictability you know a lot happens
- 20:06in a year you know a lot changes you
- 20:09know we lose people we gain people
- 20:12>> um I mean since I started running the
- 20:14show I have you know I didn't have I had
- 20:16one daughter now I have two
- 20:18>> you know what I mean a lot changes um so
- 20:20I think it's just kind of the
- 20:22unpredictability the market changes
- 20:24obviously Yeah.
- 20:31>> What are your thoughts right now? Like
- 20:32do you think cons are are kind of
- 20:34getting busy again? Are they kind of
- 20:35stagnant for where they've been?
- 20:36Obviously, it's not 2020 2021, but um we
- 20:40talked about a little bit how it's
- 20:41gotten harder to kind of maybe attract
- 20:43people. What are you seeing right now?
- 20:46I think the our roughest year as a show
- 20:48was the Vice City one, the one in Park
- 20:50Ridge because that was like 2024
- 20:54and it was early 2024. So like 23 24
- 20:57there was I feel like a lot of hesitancy
- 21:00with the market like stuff was still
- 21:03really coming down but stuff was still
- 21:05priced very expensive.
- 21:07>> Yeah.
- 21:07>> And that one I felt was the most unsure
- 21:10people were about actually buying and
- 21:12attending. Um, which was unfortunate
- 21:15because that show cost uh a decent
- 21:18amount of money and that was like one of
- 21:20our shows that we were trying to like
- 21:21really upgrade and um we got we had a
- 21:24lot more vendors but you know it just
- 21:27like it we also went for a bigger look
- 21:29so it was further up north in New
- 21:30Jersey.
- 21:31>> Yeah. It's right by me where I live.
- 21:33>> Yeah. Yeah. It was a nice venue and it
- 21:35looked great and everything like that
- 21:36but I feel like the market was just so
- 21:38weird at that point. Um
- 21:41and then so we scaled back and then last
- 21:43year um I felt like was it was it was a
- 21:48much stronger turnout than the prior
- 21:50year and I felt like good. I was like
- 21:51all right that felt like solid, you
- 21:54know, like but I and the vendors all did
- 21:56really well.
- 21:58>> Um and this year was our biggest
- 22:01turnout. We had uh about 530 people
- 22:05through the doors, which is great for
- 22:07our show. And um and uh I feel like the
- 22:11vendors did awesome again. Um and I
- 22:14think we've hit a comfortable zone with
- 22:17collecting, at least from what people
- 22:19are telling me, you know, because I'm
- 22:20pretty good friends with like Ben from
- 22:22Zap and I talk to him a lot about like
- 22:24he tells me like what's selling and
- 22:25stuff like that
- 22:27>> and just other people that that vended
- 22:29there. Um, and everyone feels really
- 22:31comfortable kind of where the market is
- 22:32right now. I'm comfortable like as a
- 22:34buyer right now. Like I'll still check
- 22:37to see, but um, you know, some trends,
- 22:41>> but I'm comfortable with where stuff is
- 22:43right now. I think there's still some
- 22:44stuff that's maybe a little high, you
- 22:46know, but um, it hasn't really proven
- 22:50that it shouldn't be. But just for for
- 22:52me as a buyer uh, right now, I think um,
- 22:55we're in a comfortable spot.
- 22:57>> Yeah, I I think so as well. And you
- 22:59mentioned Zap Ben. Uh he actually
- 23:01offered to come on the podcast. So we're
- 23:02going to get that going at some point as
- 23:03well. So I'm looking forward to that.
- 23:05But do you think right now there's maybe
- 23:07too many shows that are on the East
- 23:08Coast? You mentioned a few. I I know you
- 23:10go to Terrific. I've been to Terrificon.
- 23:12Obviously your show. Um you talked
- 23:14earlier about you've gone to card shows
- 23:16in the area. Can you talk a little bit
- 23:17about how like that impacts your show
- 23:21and do you think there are too many cons
- 23:22going on right now?
- 23:25>> I don't think there's too many. Man,
- 23:27it's tough with comic shows. It's like
- 23:29the because you get the big mega shows
- 23:32and then you have, you know, like the
- 23:34monthly shows which are are great. So, I
- 23:36don't I don't feel there's an
- 23:38overabundance of comic shows. Like,
- 23:40there's definitely times during the
- 23:41month where I'm looking and wishing
- 23:43there was a show like that I could go
- 23:45to. Um,
- 23:47but I also don't travel like extremely
- 23:49far. I'll go to like Clifton, which you
- 23:50go to, right? And Old Bridge, I'll go to
- 23:52that one.
- 23:53Um, card shows there's a lot, but
- 23:57they're able to have a lot. Like I go to
- 23:59these and they are packed. They'll be
- 24:01packed in the middle of the week on a
- 24:03Tuesday, on a Wednesday, on a Friday.
- 24:05Like they could just have them. And
- 24:06that's right now. Now we've been in the,
- 24:09you know, like the boom before. Now
- 24:11cards are a different animal, but like
- 24:14sometimes you feel like how long can can
- 24:16that last, you know? But I hope it lasts
- 24:18forever, you know? That would be
- 24:19amazing. But
- 24:21>> I What were you gonna say?
- 24:24>> I was going to say, did you do you set
- 24:25up there or you just go as like a buyer?
- 24:27>> I set up at my first card show uh a week
- 24:31a week or two ago. Um because I've been
- 24:33into the card scene now a little bit.
- 24:35I've I'm I'm still collecting comics,
- 24:37but I've hit a lot of my collecting
- 24:39goals.
- 24:40>> That's what I feel like a lot of people
- 24:42out there right now, like including
- 24:43myself, like I I've I've I've owned the
- 24:45books that I I've really wanted to own
- 24:47in my lifetime. So you're starting to
- 24:48see other people maybe go to Pokemon,
- 24:50they're going to toys, they're going to
- 24:51video games. There's so much out there
- 24:53>> of what I call cross collectors that
- 24:55that collect a lot of things. So
- 24:58>> yes, and I definitely consider myself
- 24:59one of those. But I mean, I was gung
- 25:01like ho to hit goals for comics for
- 25:05years, you know what I mean? And I and I
- 25:07feel like I achieved there's definitely
- 25:08still books that I want out there. Um,
- 25:11but right now I feel like um cards are
- 25:14in a space where they're a little easier
- 25:15to trade, to buy and sell. Um, it's
- 25:19really almost like like a like the floor
- 25:22of Wall Street. I feel like a stock
- 25:24market, you know, like you're in there
- 25:26and people are making trades, kids are
- 25:29making tra. It's just so it's so busy.
- 25:32>> It's it's crazy. And I'm not knocking
- 25:33comics at all. like I wish, you know, I
- 25:36think there's there's room for um like a
- 25:39younger generation to kind of take that
- 25:41energy and bring it into the comic
- 25:42market. Um but right now it seems like
- 25:45the card shows are just uh you know
- 25:47where where a lot of the energy is. And
- 25:49that's why
- 25:50>> I felt like for this last show I brought
- 25:52I was I I felt like it needed a little
- 25:55bit of a breath of fresh air. I we had
- 25:5821
- 26:00comic vendors in the last the previous
- 26:03show before this past one. This last
- 26:05show I was like I had this whole space
- 26:07where I I could add vendors
- 26:12but with comics and the walls that
- 26:15people have it doesn't it wouldn't that
- 26:18space wouldn't have made sense and I
- 26:19didn't want to cannibalize the rooms and
- 26:22the other vendors with more comics. So,
- 26:24I was like, I'm going to make the jump
- 26:26and try to get some card vendors in
- 26:28there, which I did. And I was a little
- 26:29nervous. I see how people would react to
- 26:31that. But, it was great. And most people
- 26:34that we asked that were coming in
- 26:36through the door when I would, my wife
- 26:37and I would ask them what you're there
- 26:38for, the majority of people said both
- 26:41comics and cards, which I found
- 26:42interesting and goes back to what you
- 26:44were saying about cross collecting.
- 26:45Yeah.
- 26:46>> I think a lot of people too maybe who
- 26:48haven't collected comics in the past,
- 26:50they're going into the show for Pokemon.
- 26:51All of a sudden, they're seeing all the
- 26:52comic vendors. are like, "Oh [ __ ] I
- 26:54didn't know about this. I didn't know
- 26:55about this. This is cool. Can you tell
- 26:56me about it?" So, that that's a good
- 26:57thing as well, right? Yeah,
- 26:58>> 100%. And I think it goes both ways. But
- 27:01yeah, I mean, look at the
- 27:03>> you know, I'll say I I'm pretty sure I
- 27:05feel like Spider-Man's more iconic than
- 27:08>> probably poke Pokemon, at least for for
- 27:11us. And you know, I don't know how long
- 27:13for I don't know if that's going to be
- 27:14forever, but I mean, you you go into a a
- 27:17a comic show for cards
- 27:20>> and you might take a little detour
- 27:22through the ballroom and see like, oh,
- 27:23what's that? SP look at that. It's just
- 27:25like looks like an oversized card and
- 27:27it's got some cool artwork on it, you
- 27:29know? Um, Spider-Man. I love Spider-Man.
- 27:32I love the Avengers. I mean,
- 27:33>> this Gen Z generation grew up with the
- 27:35Marvel movies, you know what I mean? So,
- 27:37why wouldn't they possibly be interested
- 27:39in both, you know? Yeah, I totally
- 27:41agree.
- 27:46Back to the topic of of talking a little
- 27:48bit about your show or maybe maybe you
- 27:50know other promoters out there. Do you
- 27:52guys ever get nervous about like dealers
- 27:54and their pricing? Like cuz you know
- 27:56somebody walks into a show, I hate to
- 27:57say it, but like I've gone into shows
- 27:59and I I've looked at some of the books
- 28:00on some people's walls and I just been
- 28:02like totally dejected and just kind of
- 28:04move on. Mhm.
- 28:05>> As a promoter or knowing anybody who's
- 28:07also promoted a show, have you ever
- 28:08gotten like nervous about that?
- 28:11>> Um,
- 28:13I feel like I don't I I feel like I
- 28:16know, you know, like I was talking about
- 28:17earlier, like the the vendors that I
- 28:19have, I kind of know how they work and
- 28:22their personalities and stuff like that.
- 28:24>> Now, will everything be exactly at
- 28:26market or under? I don't know. I don't
- 28:28know how much room they have on it, but
- 28:29do I think anyone's going to try to take
- 28:30advantage of anyone? No. Um,
- 28:34and other promoters, I'm I'm not sure.
- 28:37Uh, but that's why I don't just kind of
- 28:39let anyone vend if I don't know you or
- 28:42if you know, even if someone I don't
- 28:43know, I'll check out their Instagram.
- 28:45I'll look at their eBay maybe and and
- 28:47see see what's going on. It definitely
- 28:48is a thought.
- 28:50>> Of course, I want people to have the
- 28:51best experience possible that are coming
- 28:53to the show. But even for the card guys,
- 28:55the ones that the card people that I
- 28:57got, those are all people for the like
- 28:5999% that I had bought stuff from before.
- 29:01And I think that's a smart way to go
- 29:03about it because I want to pass on my
- 29:04good experience to people attending the
- 29:06show. And again, it's not that I'm if
- 29:09you're not there, I don't or never
- 29:10reached out to you or bought from you. I
- 29:12don't think any, you know, it's not I
- 29:14don't think you're not worth anything or
- 29:16you know what I mean. I don't want to
- 29:18take offense to Yeah. So,
- 29:21>> I was going to say I think for the
- 29:22people who listen who haven't been to
- 29:23King Kong before, this kind of gives you
- 29:24a little bit of an inkling of how Greg
- 29:27runs the show and what you're walking
- 29:28into, right? He obviously he knows all
- 29:31if if not most of the vendors that set
- 29:34up at his show and that's why I always
- 29:36say it's one of the better shows of the
- 29:37year and that of course add on top of
- 29:39that is the people you know from you
- 29:42know our side of the country the east
- 29:43coast Jersey you know New York,
- 29:45Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
- 29:46whatever. So like that that is is goes
- 29:49without saying. So, if you haven't been
- 29:50to King Kong before, make sure you next
- 29:52year that you guys get to it because it
- 29:54really is a wellpriced show and it's a
- 29:56fun show to boot. As far as like all the
- 29:59available avenues to buy comics and
- 30:02collectibles right now, obviously eBay,
- 30:04whatnot, Instagram, obviously we have
- 30:06in-person shows, all that stuff. Do you
- 30:09think it hurts the con at all?
- 30:12No, because I still think people want
- 30:14that human, you know, interaction. I
- 30:16still especially with comics I like to
- 30:19raw comics I'll say even even slabs I
- 30:22like to buy in per I mean there's sites
- 30:24I trust like I mean I don't love eBay
- 30:26because of all the fees that that's a
- 30:28no-brainer I love buying stuff from
- 30:30Elite when I can uh Elite Comics on
- 30:32Instagram.
- 30:34>> Um I just feel safe buying from them. Um
- 30:37but when it comes to RAWs I I personally
- 30:40like to just look at the book myself
- 30:43when I'm buying it. Um
- 30:47there there are there are so many ways
- 30:48to buy stuff online, but uh I don't
- 30:51think it hurts the shows because I think
- 30:53people like getting together and people
- 30:54were who come to our show usually stay
- 30:56like you know there's very few people I
- 30:58see that come in and then five minutes
- 30:59later they're out. You know what I mean?
- 31:01>> Yeah.
- 31:02>> Um I think it's important for people to
- 31:04that's part of the hobby is to to go and
- 31:08>> I like talking to vendors too. Like when
- 31:10I go to these shows sometimes I'll just
- 31:12talk to like you said Ben or
- 31:14>> uh you know um absolutely awesome
- 31:17collectibles like Gary and Spiro you
- 31:19know they've been in the game for so
- 31:20long. I love talking to those like old
- 31:22school vendors who have been vending
- 31:24since the late 80s or 90s and just
- 31:27>> I get such like invaluable
- 31:30uh feedback from them. You know what I
- 31:32mean?
- 31:32>> That's why like that's why sometimes the
- 31:34smaller show is a lot more fun because
- 31:35you try doing that stuff at like a New
- 31:37York Comic-Con, forget it. There's
- 31:38people everywhere. You're bumping into
- 31:40one another. People are trying to dig
- 31:41through all the boxes and there's just
- 31:42like freaking 50 people at one booth.
- 31:44It's a little hard to do that because of
- 31:45the size of the venue. But, you know,
- 31:47the smaller shows, yes, there's still a
- 31:49lot of people. This year was it was
- 31:50packed. So, like I was walking around
- 31:52like talking a lot of people, but like
- 31:54you could still get in there and chop it
- 31:55up with a lot of the dealers and kind of
- 31:57find, you know, what people are looking
- 31:59for, you know, what they have, what they
- 32:01may have that they didn't bring, stuff
- 32:02like that. So, I agree with you. It's
- 32:04it's I think a smaller show is really
- 32:07fun for doing that.
- 32:08>> Yeah. And again, I think, you know, if
- 32:11if you're comfortable with just talking
- 32:13to the vendors and, you know, asking
- 32:15questions about the books you're buying,
- 32:18I think, you know, that beats a DM. And
- 32:22because when I'm DMing people, I feel
- 32:23like I'm bothering them more than when
- 32:25I'm just like having a back and forth.
- 32:26You know what I mean? cuz uh so yeah, I
- 32:29I don't I don't think
- 32:31>> if anything I think now it's better than
- 32:33it was as far as the the cons. People
- 32:37people just like going out. I mean in
- 32:39New Jersey especially I think around
- 32:42March and this time people are this this
- 32:44winter and you know was brutal.
- 32:46>> Yeah.
- 32:47>> Yeah. It was like 20° or less for since
- 32:51December and I once like March came
- 32:54around I feel like people were ready to
- 32:56go out. I know a bunch of shows that I
- 32:58were was planning to go to were
- 33:00cancelled a few times uh throughout the
- 33:03winter because of the weather. So, I do
- 33:06think the benefit of shows in New Jersey
- 33:08is even though there's so many is that
- 33:10once that winter, you know, cabin fever
- 33:13wears off, you're ready to get out and
- 33:15and you know, socialize a bit.
- 33:18So, being that you've talked to some of
- 33:20the dealers and you have been, you know,
- 33:21kind of still collecting, what I mean,
- 33:24has anybody told you what people are
- 33:25looking for? Like, regarding comics?
- 33:27Obviously, Pokemon probably anything
- 33:29right now is probably sellable or
- 33:30viable, but comics wise, what do you
- 33:32think or what have you been told that
- 33:34people are looking for?
- 33:36>> I always hear this, oh, Spider-Man is
- 33:38like the king, you know? I always hear
- 33:40the classic ASM are always the king. You
- 33:42know, X-Men 2, but not as much as
- 33:44Spider-Man. Um, I had some people leave
- 33:47and they'll show me what they picked up
- 33:49and a lot of people were picking up some
- 33:51cool golden age books at the show.
- 33:54>> There was a lot of great books at the
- 33:55show this year. A lot.
- 33:56>> Yeah. Yeah. So, stuff like that. But I
- 33:59think it's always early ASM keys is
- 34:03that's just
- 34:04>> I mean you you're you're a big fan of
- 34:06that. So am I.
- 34:07>> Um, that's I think is the king. But I
- 34:10think Claremont X-Men always does well.
- 34:12Um, early X-Men. I think X-Men and and
- 34:16Spider-Man are usually the top books
- 34:18that people are going for.
- 34:20>> I agree. And that I think that says a
- 34:22lot about the market and who's buying
- 34:23those books, right? I don't think you
- 34:24buy Spider-Man X-Men without being a fan
- 34:27for the most part. So, that's good. That
- 34:28that tells you who's coming into the
- 34:30market. It's not all dealers buying this
- 34:32stuff. It's actual collectors and fans
- 34:34of these actual characters. But, um,
- 34:36>> it's funny because you know what? When I
- 34:38was at the show this year, I was talking
- 34:40to a few people and I saw a lot of
- 34:41people buying like obscure things as
- 34:43well. Like
- 34:44>> Mark Mark Jeweler stuff. I saw a bunch
- 34:46of people like, "Oh, Mark Jewelers, let
- 34:48me get that." Uh books that like there
- 34:50was one dealer had a couple of copies of
- 34:52Cocaine Comics. People were asking about
- 34:53that. Like you know what? A lot of stuff
- 34:55that like you don't see all the time.
- 34:56And that's what made the show like
- 34:58really good this year because there was
- 34:59a lot of books that were like, "Holy
- 35:00[ __ ] I haven't seen that before." for
- 35:02or like a lot of people looking for for
- 35:04some really like weird stuff which I you
- 35:06know right now like we talked about
- 35:08before about me kind of going through
- 35:10and and buying everything that I've
- 35:12wanted to. So when I'm seeing new things
- 35:14that that's really good and I think
- 35:15that's also how other collectors are
- 35:17feeling as well. That's what I'm doing
- 35:19too is I'm looking for obser. I was
- 35:21looking on eBay earlier because I saw
- 35:23someone post a Nintendo Power graded a
- 35:26graded Nintendo Power of uh I think it
- 35:29was a WWF game and the cover is that I'd
- 35:31never seen before. The cover is Hogan
- 35:33leg dropping earthquake. Do you know the
- 35:35Nintendo Power cover I'm talking about?
- 35:37>> I I don't know that cover, but I'm still
- 35:38trying to find number one complete
- 35:40because that it's really hard to find
- 35:42like the map and everything inside.
- 35:43>> Oh, okay. So, I think those are that's
- 35:45stuff that I'm kind of interested in
- 35:46now. I'm like very bullish on uh like
- 35:49Nintendo comics and stuff like that. Um
- 35:52I'm trying to get a Zelda back in. I had
- 35:54sold a Zelda uh first appearance for
- 35:56you. I had done a big trade to upgrade
- 35:58some books. Um but yeah, I love stuff
- 36:01like that. Like Nintendo Power Sports
- 36:03Illustrated. I have some like WWF, what
- 36:06was it called? Battle
- 36:08Battle World or Battle Stars or
- 36:10something, you know, with Ultimate
- 36:11Warrior and Undertaker on the cover.
- 36:13Like I like I've been into that kind of
- 36:14stuff on the comic side more than like
- 36:16the traditional keys.
- 36:18>> When you're at your when you're at your
- 36:20own show, is it like hard to like not
- 36:22shop around yourself? Cuz I know you got
- 36:23a million things going on when you're at
- 36:25the show. But
- 36:26>> yeah, I usually this this show to be
- 36:28honest, even my brother who who who
- 36:30helps me there and and uh my wife. This
- 36:33was the busiest we were that we barely
- 36:35were able to like leave the table. Um it
- 36:38was just it was non-stop all day. And
- 36:41the interesting thing was once it was
- 36:42done, all the comic guys cleared out
- 36:44pretty quickly, but there were people
- 36:46still making like big card deals, like
- 36:48sitting together finalizing trades and
- 36:51stuff like that, which was awesome
- 36:53because I was nervous for uh for the
- 36:56Pokemon guys a little bit because it was
- 36:57the first time I had them there. Their
- 36:59card shows are guaranteed to do well for
- 37:02the most part. So, I had gotten a lot of
- 37:04people that said, "No, I'm not really
- 37:05interested in doing a comic show." And I
- 37:07was like, you know, totally understand.
- 37:09But then I think the people that did do
- 37:10it were smart because they had a lot
- 37:12less competition than they normally do
- 37:15at at these car shows where there's like
- 37:1740 or 50 vendors, you know, they were
- 37:19one of 10 or 11 and they did really
- 37:22really well and all of them were like, I
- 37:24definitely want to come back next year
- 37:25if I'm able to, you know, but um
- 37:30I forgot what your question was. I went
- 37:31off on a
- 37:33>> All good. All good. I I'll go right into
- 37:35the next one. Like obviously we are
- 37:37where we are. We came from 20 2021.
- 37:39Where do you see conventions going in
- 37:41the next five to 10 years? Are we gonna
- 37:42kind of grow or are we going to stay the
- 37:44same or you think we're going to regress
- 37:45a little bit?
- 37:46>> I don't think we're going to regress. I
- 37:48think I mean I think it's I I encourage
- 37:53anyone to, you know, try to to run a
- 37:56show. Just make sure you know the prices
- 37:59are fair and make sure you have like a
- 38:01kind of a goal of what you want. Um, as
- 38:03far as the big shows,
- 38:06I don't know. I don't know. I don't know
- 38:08how long they're going to do well. I
- 38:09mean, no matter what. But I think I see
- 38:11a lot of them relying more on like the
- 38:12guests, you know, that's what I see.
- 38:14Like I mean, if I'm I don't need to go
- 38:17to New York Comic- Con, me personally,
- 38:19to find comics. And I'm sure you don't,
- 38:21you know what I mean?
- 38:23>> Um you and I don't know 100% like if
- 38:27you're going to get the best deals
- 38:28there. um you know, I'm not that's not a
- 38:32knock to the vendors or anything like
- 38:33that, but I know their overheads are a
- 38:35lot and
- 38:35>> yeah,
- 38:36>> just not where I would go anymore to to
- 38:39like buy big books. Um but I do think
- 38:43they'll thrive because I think the
- 38:45culture is so big. People love dressing
- 38:48up. People love going out there. People
- 38:50love meeting the celebrities. People
- 38:51love getting stuff signed. Um
- 38:54so I think they'll continue to grow. I
- 38:57just don't know how much the the comics
- 39:00side of the the shows will continue to
- 39:02grow because I know New York Comic- Con
- 39:04it's starting to shrink a little bit.
- 39:05That comic section always seems a little
- 39:06smaller.
- 39:08>> Um but I I love Terrificon.
- 39:10>> I love Terrificon too. I I didn't go
- 39:11last year. Um it's not because of
- 39:13Terrificon, but like when you go to
- 39:14Terrific, you're in Moheaggan. Yes, you
- 39:16could stay outside the hotel, but for me
- 39:18personally, I want to stay in the casino
- 39:20casino and it's expensive. Like to stay
- 39:22in the casino, it's expensive. So to me,
- 39:24if I'm not going to look to buy a lot of
- 39:26comics right now to to spend that kind
- 39:28of money and stay there a couple of
- 39:29nights, uh it's it's a lot. So that's
- 39:32why I didn't go last year, but this year
- 39:33it might be different.
- 39:34>> Yeah, we we I haven't gone uh we didn't
- 39:37go last year, but we we went like the
- 39:39last three or four years before that.
- 39:41It's just coming in a little harder for
- 39:43someone to come watch the kids.
- 39:45>> Um but that's a show where you get a
- 39:48good a lot of good dealers because
- 39:50there's some of the ones that that do
- 39:52King Kong as well. Um, it's good to hunt
- 39:55books there. Uh, and the guests are
- 39:58always awesome. But the whole
- 40:00experience, too, is like you can leave,
- 40:02go, you know, do some casino stuff, go
- 40:05get some food, go lay down in the hotel.
- 40:07It's like you're you're you're like
- 40:08there for it's like a, you know, like
- 40:10it's almost like being at Disney. You're
- 40:12like in a little bubble, you know what I
- 40:13mean? So, that's one of my favorite
- 40:15shows.
- 40:16>> Uh, as far as the bigger shows to go to,
- 40:18and they always have awesome guests. I
- 40:20mean, um, I met Michael Bean there a few
- 40:23years ago. I'm a big Terminator fan and
- 40:25Aliens fan and, uh, I talked to him for
- 40:28a while and so that was awesome. Um,
- 40:30>> the guests, the guests at Terrific are
- 40:31always topnotch. That's the big reason
- 40:33to go there. If you want to meet actors,
- 40:35creators, artists, writers, it's really
- 40:38like second to none as far as having
- 40:41guests there. Because to me, outside of
- 40:43maybe, you know, San Diego, New York
- 40:44Comic-Con, where it's so much bigger
- 40:46than the Terrific Con, even though
- 40:48Terrificon is still pretty big, the
- 40:49amount of guests they have there and the
- 40:51quality guests is is just awesome. Um,
- 40:53you know, I I'd be remiss if I didn't
- 40:55ask you this question because I have
- 40:56thought about this going to your show
- 40:58and that's ever think about doing a
- 41:00second show during the year. We did the
- 41:03first c the first couple years we did uh
- 41:05we did a fall and a spring and um
- 41:09we felt like the fall always like didn't
- 41:12do as well. Um and I so I don't know if
- 41:16it was we felt like it kind of you know
- 41:18and then you know I had another kid and
- 41:20it just it just got it got a lot to kind
- 41:23of manage too but it's definitely
- 41:26something I've I've thought about. I
- 41:28just don't know if it fits into my
- 41:30schedule. Um, and it would, you know, I
- 41:34feel like, yeah, I just don't know. I
- 41:36don't know. I guess I'm a little like
- 41:37gunshy about going back to that.
- 41:40>> And same thing with like upgrading. I
- 41:42know people I have seen comments on
- 41:44YouTube and stuff that this one was
- 41:45really crowded and they they need to get
- 41:48a bigger space. But it's tough because
- 41:50that it's not just like I snap my
- 41:52fingers and I have a bigger space. It's
- 41:54New Jersey, man. These are ballrooms
- 41:55that cost over 10 grand.
- 41:57Then you got to start thinking about
- 41:59charging higher ticket prices and
- 42:01charging more for the vendors and you
- 42:04know then you get people saying it's too
- 42:05expensive. You know what I mean? It's
- 42:07like you gotta it's just like a a
- 42:09balance you know.
- 42:10>> Yeah. At the end of the day you have to
- 42:12make sure like you said before about
- 42:14parking. You have to make sure that um
- 42:15everybody can get in and that the
- 42:17quality of vendors are there. That's the
- 42:19biggest thing for me whenever I go to a
- 42:20show. It's like I hate to say this but I
- 42:23went to a show this morning. It was a
- 42:24toy show and I got to be honest, there
- 42:26wasn't much there that I was interested.
- 42:28The show was packed. Don't get me wrong,
- 42:29it was packed, but like from a vintage
- 42:31aspect, if you're a vintage collector, I
- 42:33wanted to see more vintage stuff. So,
- 42:35>> yeah.
- 42:35>> Uh, as we wind this down, let me ask you
- 42:38something. If somebody wanted to start
- 42:40looking into doing their own show,
- 42:42what's the best advice you can give
- 42:43them?
- 42:45um start going to shows like more
- 42:47consistently and see what you like and
- 42:50you know just start analyzing the
- 42:52process uh of what you're you know
- 42:55experiencing
- 42:57and how you would translate it and what
- 42:58you do like and what you don't like what
- 43:00you would what you would fix. Make sure
- 43:02you can afford it just it doesn't hurt
- 43:04to talk to a hotel or even a VF hall or
- 43:07a school. Um, and the best way to do it
- 43:11is just to to do it and because you're
- 43:12going to make mistakes, something is
- 43:14going to go wrong. It's impossible for
- 43:16it not to, but that's how you learn. I
- 43:18mean, with everyone, even my my
- 43:20full-time job, like sometimes something
- 43:21happens, and that's the only way you're
- 43:24going to learn is if something happens
- 43:25that wasn't supposed to, and then you
- 43:27learn how to make it not happen the next
- 43:29time. But
- 43:30>> I would start by just kind of going to a
- 43:33show, seeing what you like, what you
- 43:34don't like, what you feel like works,
- 43:35and obviously have a real passion for
- 43:37it. You know, you don't want to do it.
- 43:39Don't do it for the money because it's
- 43:40it's not like a lucrative
- 43:42>> thing, you know, you just have to I
- 43:44loved shows as a kid.
- 43:46>> Uh, and I kind of wanted to just
- 43:48recreate that um passion, you know, as
- 43:50an adult.
- 43:52>> That's awesome, man. Well, listen, I
- 43:53really want to thank you for coming on
- 43:54the show today. Tell everybody out there
- 43:56where they can find you, all your
- 43:57socials, things like that.
- 44:00>> Uh, you could find me basically just
- 44:01follow me at KingChan Show on Instagram.
- 44:05Um,
- 44:06I am going to be vending uh some cards.
- 44:11So, um, uh, at shows. So, I'm going to
- 44:13be posting some stuff on there. And I
- 44:15think I'm I'm planning on trying to vend
- 44:17at the Three Men Swap and, uh, for
- 44:19comics and maybe cards at their uh,
- 44:21Connecticut Comic Swap. Um, so yeah,
- 44:24follow me at King Con Show. There's no
- 44:26G. And then keep keep an eye out for
- 44:28updates, you know, like uh I haven't
- 44:30reached out to the hotel again yet and
- 44:33uh about anything. Um it's just uh you
- 44:37know, we feel like the show just ended
- 44:39like three weeks ago, so I'm still kind
- 44:41of like winding down from that last one,
- 44:43but just follow me there and you know,
- 44:45you'll see some updates.
- 44:47>> Exactly. We're all looking forward to
- 44:48see what the next Guerilla and the
- 44:51promos are going to be, man. That's what
- 44:52I'm looking forward to most.
- 44:53>> I know. I know. Yeah. I just can't, you
- 44:56know, I think I think it it'll be uh I
- 44:58think it'll be a hit.
