- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be here again. Lucas: We have been very busy exploring the human body lately. Luna: Yes. We did neck, shoulder, tongue, tooth, face, lip, throat, belly, stomach, knee, ankle, finger, thumb, elbow, and wrist. Lucas: That is quite a tour. Today we move to the center of the body. Luna: The back and the belly? That sounds important. Lucas: It is. Let us start with the back. The word is de rug. Luna: De rug. Okay. De rug. Lucas: Good. Now let us make it into a sentence. If your back hurts, you say: Mijn rug doet pijn. Luna: Mijn rug doet pijn. Wait, let me try that. Mijn rug doet pijn. Lucas: Perfect. Your pronunciation is very clear today. Luna: I feel confident. So, if I sit at my desk all day, I might say Mijn rug doet pijn. Lucas: Exactly. It is a very common complaint. Now, what about the front part? Luna: The belly. In Dutch, is that not de maag? Lucas: Ah, careful. De maag is the stomach organ itself. For the belly area, we use de buik. Luna: De buik. Got it. De buik. Lucas: Right. And if your belly hurts, you do not usually say Mijn buik doet pijn. You say something different. Luna: Oh really? What do you say? Lucas: You say: Ik heb buikpijn. Literally, I have belly-pain. Luna: Ik heb buikpijn. That sounds so much easier than making a long sentence. Lucas: It is. Dutch loves compound words. Buik and pijn become buikpijn. Luna: Let me practice that. Ik heb buikpijn. Ik heb buikpijn. Lucas: Very good. Now, imagine you are at the doctor's office. Luna: Okay. I have already seen the doctor many times in our episodes. Lucas: True. But sometimes you need to know how long the pain will last. Luna: Yes. How long until it heals? Can we ask that? Lucas: We can. The phrase is: Hoe lang duurt het voordat het geneest? Luna: Hoe lang duurt het voordat het geneest? That is a mouthful. Lucas: It is a bit long. Let us break it down. Hoe lang means how long. Duurt het means does it last. Voordat het geneest means before it heals. Luna: Okay. Hoe lang duurt het... voordat het geneest? I think I got it. Lucas: You did. It is a polite way to ask for a prognosis. Luna: Let us put it all together. My back hurts. I have a stomach ache. When will it heal? Lucas: Good summary. Let us repeat the key phrases one more time. Luna: De rug. Mijn rug doet pijn. Lucas: De buik. Ik heb buikpijn. Luna: Hoe lang duurt het voordat het geneest? Lucas: Excellent. You are learning so much about health and bodies. Luna: I feel like I could treat a patient now. Lucas: Maybe not a real one, but you can certainly talk to your friends about it. Luna: That is enough for now. I need to go drink some water. Lucas: Smart choice. Staying hydrated helps with everything. Luna: Speaking of which, if this show has helped you learn Dutch... Lucas: Then your support keeps it going. We keep these episodes ad-free because of you.
