- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Stable Roots.
- 0:07This week I'm going to be talking about the ghost of Christmas
- 0:10present and finding
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: richness in the unseen.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Christmas presents.
- 0:19I'm posting this week's musings in Stable Roots a day early
- 0:24because it feels silly
- 0:25to talk about Christmas the day after the event just because I
- 0:29love order and
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: consistency and can't abide change.
- 0:34Also,
- 0:35I did Charles Dickens a disservice when I mentioned I was tired
- 0:38of him.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Charles.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I'm making up for it this week with a nod to you in the title.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Dickens was the master of producing serialized writing,
- 0:49leading the way for peons like me to arrive in your inbox every
- 0:53Thursday or Wednesday.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: We have a lot to thank him for in the mass production of Story.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: We've taken Christmas down a notch in the farmhouse.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: We sourced a tree from the fence line and the decorations are up.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But we've taken the pressure away from gifting each other extravagantly.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Experiences and presents are at the top of our wish lists.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Speaking of wish lists,
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Daniel Ruda and his family in Swannanoa,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: North Carolina lost their house,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: their belongings,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: their vehicle,
- 1:29and tools for working when Hurricane Helene cut a path through
- 1:33their community.
- 1:35Daniel posted an Amazon wish list and was slayed on the
- 1:38internet for listing
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: something as frivolous as a drone.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: How dare he have wants instead of needs?
- 1:47What people didn't understand was that he needed the drone for
- 1:49his construction business.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Tamar Reno and I spoke about his story,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: a drop in the bucket of stories from the mountains,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: on a recent episode of my podcast.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Tamar's wish was that Daniel would receive a drone,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: and that need was fulfilled by someone from our beloved farm community.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: I cannot thank them enough.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I went from feeling meh about the Christmas season to being all fired up.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: This is the sort of present that matters now in the present.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: How can we show up in the here and now and be of some service?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And if you click on this post for Stable Roots,
- 2:31it'll take you to Daniel Ruta's family's Amazon wish list and
- 2:36also their GoFundMe.
- 2:38And you can also click on the link for my ever-changing list of
- 2:43other people who
- 2:44need your help as they rebuild their entire lives after the
- 2:47destruction of
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Hurricane Helene.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: In this week's post,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: I'm sharing three views of the holidays and how the present,
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: our presence,
- 2:59and the prescience of the unseen world weave together in a web
- 3:04of connection.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Let's get started.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Walt Whitman.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Present.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Night roads in the country remind me of the limitations of my vision.
- 3:26The headlights reveal just enough to move me forward one
- 3:30illuminated stretch at a time.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: It's Christmas Eve,
- 3:35and I slow my car to watch a woman pull a long stretch of water
- 3:38hose across the
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: narrow street to a pasture fenced in sagging wire and hickory posts.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: This woman and I once shared barn space together, our herds mingled.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: She knows me better than my family.
- 3:55We've not spoken in years because the raw places in my heart
- 3:59brushed against the
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: metal of her rightness and ignited in a slow burn of resentment.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: That's how the cycles keep spinning with the planets.
- 4:09We're still convinced our sun is at the center of the universe
- 4:12because that's all we can see.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: My headlights blind her.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: She can't see who is behind the wheel.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: I could dim my lights,
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: pull over on the wide winter grass shoulder of the road,
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: and help her water the far pasture.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I've walked this land since I was newly made,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: filled with stories and yearning,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: spending an hour with a dragging halter trying to catch my horse.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I can feel my way through it in the dark.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: I could tell her how frustrated I was, how sorry I am.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: In farms, olive branches come wrapped in help.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I could tell her that my temper is a form of protection,
- 4:58that it's the sharp barbed fence I use to keep my uncatchable
- 5:02horses safe.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: If I can't tame them, I can hold them.
- 5:09A watcher move beyond the edges of the headlights to the gate I
- 5:12know by the rough
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: touch of rust,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: the chain that will slip from her fingers and drop to the ground.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: There will be time.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: There will be time to ask forgiveness.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: There will be time.
- 5:29I wait for the movement in the water hose to settle and the
- 5:33gate to close behind
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: her before I creep the car slowly forward and drive away.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And my note at the end is this.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: The time to offer the olive branch of help is the present.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I recently learned of Marilyn Wren's passing.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I did eventually speak to her.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: We picked up as if nothing had happened.
- 6:00But I regret not stopping to offer help watering the far
- 6:03pasture that Christmas Eve.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I regret not being brave enough to say I'm sorry.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Deep peace to you, Marilyn.
- 6:15Presence It's like speeding through red lights to reach the
- 6:21party at the same time
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: I'd arrive if I went the speed limit.
- 6:25This is what Christmas feels like,
- 6:28the part I begrudgingly agree to attend.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: If I can rush through it, I can speed home to sit still.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: The pressure to buy and to be and to perform.
- 6:41Holiday parties were jewels of the seasonal crown when my
- 6:44family was alive and together.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Together can have many meanings.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: We dressed and packaged and arrived to houses, restaurants, offices.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: The decorated trees,
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: pre-strung in their cardboard storage boxes,
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: smelled musty and bound like old books,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: fiberglass flecked from the attic.
- 7:06I picked the tinsel apart with my fingers,
- 7:09every strand placed in just the right spot.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Christmas taught me the bone-deep urgency to produce,
- 7:18how this could become a way of being when cooked with a precise
- 7:22pinch of expectation.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: How wrapping paper is rolled in lineage,
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: the cheap pieces easy to tear and wrinkle,
- 7:31the expensive fibers thick against my hands and straining to
- 7:36bounce back into its memory,
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: a paper-cut reminder of the sharp cost of blood.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: I don't dress for Christmas anymore, but when I did, I started early.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Little velvet dresses and patent leather shoes that pinched my heels.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I understood that pain was important to beauty,
- 7:57that the bow on the package needed to be perfect before it was
- 8:01unwrapped and discarded.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: But there is only so much my feet could stand.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: As the crowds thin to murmurs in the corners of the room,
- 8:11I kick my shoes off and stalk a path to the hair tonic and
- 8:15whiskey of my grandfather.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I don't remember specifics of gifts or guests or conversations,
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: but I remember this with detail that has been sewn into my hymns.
- 8:28My sock feet on top of his polished shoes as I leaned into his
- 8:33legs and danced with him.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I remembered time with my grandfather,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: his attention to my questions,
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: the box step of us moving together,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: the wire-handled box of fortunes in my small hand,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: his presence,
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: a gift to my future.
- 8:58the willing suspension of disbelief for the moment,
- 9:02which constitutes poetic faith.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Samuel Taylor Coolridge Presence I don't dress for Christmas anymore.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: I stalk a path down to the barn at midnight,
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: wrapped in the memory of a language I have never learned.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Horses don't tell time, but they get by just fine without it.
- 9:30The old stories marvel at the miracle of animals talking at
- 9:34midnight on Christmas Eve,
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: the darkness leading to the light of morning,
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: a throwback to the manger,
- 9:42and the wise men traversing deserts to gift rich resins to
- 9:46divine inspiration.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: The legend of speaking animals goes back to Roman Saturnalia,
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: a solstice feast where roles are reversed.
- 9:58My Turkish ex-in-laws celebrated with costume parties of
- 10:02switched-gender outfits
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: before the holy January of Gregorian Christmas.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Dark becomes light.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Fear becomes hope.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: Christ arrives with a promise.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: The seasons shift.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: If our stories are primary colors,
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: the ingredients simmered down to a rue,
- 10:25what does it mean when our holidays are not an obligation of
- 10:28pantomimed abundance?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: When do the animals speak?
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Because I want to be there.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: There's frost on the fallen tree limbs,
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: and the inky sky is dull with starlight filtering through the city glow.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Deer graze the kitchen scraps on the compost pile.
- 10:49A doe watches me curiously,
- 10:52a spiral of tangerine peel hanging from her delicate lips.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: The horses are sleeping, some lying, some standing.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Their eyes slip open as they hear my steps.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: A blow, a snort, a cough.
- 11:10Please talk to me,
- 11:12I say to the herd,
- 11:13a gathering I've never had to dress for.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: I've brought you peppermints.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: The plastic crinkle of the wrapper brings the barn into full wakefulness.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Bribery slash gifts,
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: dart slash light,
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: two sides of the same offered coin,
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: a token for the ferryman.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: I sit on a mounting block step and wait.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: The air is colder when my body is motionless.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: This is where I'm at, I say to the barn.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I want to learn your language, but Rosetta Stone doesn't offer a course.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: I need you to dumb it all down for me.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Frequencies are my life's blood.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Radios built my family.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Information crossing through the unseen.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I suspect that hearing the horses works in the same way,
- 12:13but I've swam too long in science to be conscious of the
- 12:16mystery when it comes.
- 12:19I settle into my breath and listen to the warm air through the
- 12:22horse's soft nostrils,
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: touch and sense and faith.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: I'm hungry for miracles,
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: but I suspect we all are right now,
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: each of us craving toward the divine light of inspiration.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: A horse lowers her head and reaches toward me.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: I stretch my hand out and offer a peppermint.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: There is an understanding in the milky current of this exchange.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: I'll work on listening better,
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I say,
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: or I will learn to listen differently,
- 12:57listening with my skin and breath and teeth and the atmosphere
- 13:01that descends on a
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: place where a herd of any type gathers.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: I will lean into it all and listen.
- 13:10Maybe the magic isn't in the tangible,
- 13:12but is nestled somewhere in the promise.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Maybe we find it when we stop looking.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: The deer steps deeper into the forest,
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: and I watch my breath in the space between my world and theirs.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Knowledge, like mist, is porous, moving, present.
- 13:33There is no actual mention in the Bible of animals being
- 13:36present at Christ's birth.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: We've collectively added them into the mangers of our memory,
- 13:42or maybe we've always known that animals have a deeper sense of
- 13:45the mystery than we
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: have learned to grasp.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Animals see what is in front of them.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Animals don't talk themselves out of believing.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Animals listen with their hair and skin and feet.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Animals read the frequencies.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: As midnight passes into the early hours of Christmas morning,
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: I realize I don't need a miracle to prove my belief.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Faith works beyond science.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And as for the animals talking,
- 14:19when my thoughts and questions quieten past the crashing waves
- 14:23of my expectations,
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: I realize that they've been speaking to me all along.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Luke 2, 19
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I'm sending you so much love this Christmas.
- 14:50I wish you presents,
- 14:51the present,
- 14:53presents,
- 14:54and presents this holiday season.
- 14:57I've even made a Christmas card,
- 14:59and you can see it if you click on this post.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: I might have been married before,
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: but this is the first time I wanted to stick it on a Christmas card.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: And that is how I know he's the right one.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: In all seriousness,
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I get a lot of comments from strong,
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: beautiful women who believe balanced,
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: mature,
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: safe love is a myth.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I had given up looking.
- 15:23It's absolutely okay to not want anything to do with finding
- 15:27someone and to build
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: your life fundamentally around your wisdom.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: We don't have to be with another person to have a rich existence.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: But if you're looking,
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: you don't have to buy the expectations,
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: fabrications,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: and myths that we've been sold about what the perfect partner is.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Mine was right beside me my entire life,
- 15:47and I was too blinded by dogma to see him until he patiently
- 15:51waited for me to
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: accept what he offered.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: I talk about this in 6,000 other things here at Stable Roots,
- 15:59and you can find the first chapter of my love story if you
- 16:03click on my post or on
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: the navigation of the Stable Roots page.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: On this Christmas, I wish you peace and a felt sense of your inner light.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Your body knows its truth.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Your spirit is ready to nourish you,
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: and your mind is ready to be transformed by the awe of nature.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: There is still magic in this world.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Let's find it together.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Love, Kim
