- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Scheger. I am
- 0:29Speaker 1: Peter Schrager. I am joined by my producer and friend
- 0:32Speaker 1: Aaron wang Kaufman, and also Jason English from the iHeartMedia team.
- 0:38Speaker 2: What forty eight hours for New York Football? I got
- 0:43Speaker 2: to start in New York as we go to the
- 0:45Speaker 2: Sunday Night experience to the Monday night experience and do
- 0:48Speaker 2: a quick snippet on just the total polar opposites of
- 0:52Speaker 2: how you can feel after a loss Jets Sunday Night, Aaron,
- 0:58Speaker 2: They're down seventeen to nothing. They start with this ridiculous
- 1:02Speaker 2: safety and then they get a field goal of seventeen
- 1:04Speaker 2: to five, and then all of a sudden it starts
- 1:06Speaker 2: clicking and Zach Wilson begins out playing Mahomes. I joked
- 1:10Speaker 2: on on Monday mornings Good Morning Football that I thought,
- 1:14Speaker 2: you know, did Mahomes.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Go out the night before? Like, was Mahomes the one
- 1:18Speaker 1: out with Taylor Swift till three in the morning at
- 1:20Speaker 1: zero bond? Because all of a sudden, Mahomes is throwing
- 1:22Speaker 1: ducks and he's getting intercepted, and if mostly picks that
- 1:25Speaker 1: one off doesn't drop it, who knows what else can happen.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And Zach Wilson starts looking like not only a competent quarterback,
- 1:32Speaker 1: a good quarterback. The first drive in the third quarter
- 1:36Speaker 1: of that Jets Chiefs game, Zack Wilson gets the ball
- 1:39Speaker 1: and takes it right down the field. Therews a couple beautiful,
- 1:43Speaker 1: beautiful passes, a beautiful touch up pass to Almazard, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: then on the two point conversion, looks like Brett Favre
- 1:48Speaker 1: running around with his head cut off and gets the
- 1:50Speaker 1: two point coversion games everything he can to get in there.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yes there was the fumble, and yes they lost, but
- 1:56Speaker 1: after the game, Mahomes pulls in Zach Wilson is like,
- 1:59Speaker 1: you got it, Like it was like the coolest moment
- 2:01Speaker 1: if you're Zach Wilson, and if you put yourself in
- 2:05Speaker 1: Zach Wilson's use for just a second. For the last
- 2:08Speaker 1: two years, all you read about, all you see is
- 2:11Speaker 1: that you suck, You're awful, you're a bust, you don't
- 2:15Speaker 1: have it. The season's over, You're a punching bag, and
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm as guilty of this as anyone in the media.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Like you just you take something that's it's almost like
- 2:25Speaker 1: this like rotting carcass and then like you feel the
- 2:28Speaker 1: need to like kick it one more time, and that's
- 2:30Speaker 1: what we do in the media, and that's what it is.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But it was based on the fact that he couldn't
- 2:35Speaker 1: play well and he couldn't do it well. Then suddenly
- 2:37Speaker 1: you have this performance on Sunday night and it's a loss,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and the Jets are one in three and the season
- 2:42Speaker 1: is likely not going anywhere. But you wake up Monday
- 2:45Speaker 1: morning as a jetspan and you feel good. You know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we've had Hanka's area on the time on the show
- 2:50Speaker 1: countless times, and Hank tells you, like, you know, you
- 2:53Speaker 1: feel like you just you don't deserve nice things. Well, yes,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they lost, but you gotta feel nice things. When Zach
- 3:00Speaker 1: Wilson has this moment of hope, this glimmer of positivity
- 3:03Speaker 1: and if there isn't that controversial holding call and so
- 3:05Speaker 1: it's Gardner who knows, maybe Zach Wilson has an opportunity
- 3:08Speaker 1: to go seventy yards and they win that game and
- 3:11Speaker 1: it's even better, but at the very least Zach Wilson
- 3:15Speaker 1: doesn't have another good game in his career. At least
- 3:17Speaker 1: we saw that this is what the Jets saw in
- 3:19Speaker 1: him and what they saw in practice, and there's some
- 3:23Speaker 1: chants of positivity from Zach Wilson. Meanwhile, less than twenty
- 3:28Speaker 1: four hours later, the Giants game starts, and they've got
- 3:31Speaker 1: a quarterback who makes forty million dollars a year, who
- 3:36Speaker 1: goes out there and throws one of the most inexplicable
- 3:39Speaker 1: pick sixes to Devin Weatherspoon to put the game away.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Also was sacked eleven times behind an offensive line that yes,
- 3:45Speaker 1: is down there left tackle, but has plenty of talent
- 3:47Speaker 1: that they have brought in in the draft and free agency.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I don't know where Darren Waller is in this offense.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I don't know where Paris Campbell has been. You know,
- 3:57Speaker 1: Wandale Robinson's wide open deep. Daniel Jones doesn't see him.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Sterling Shepherd makes good money. I don't see him on
- 4:03Speaker 1: the field. I don't know what Darius Slayton's been up to.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The Giants, big ticket quarterback, first round pick they doubled
- 4:10Speaker 1: down on, and now in hindsight, I'm looking at it
- 4:14Speaker 1: and it's like the Giants didn't weren't dying to pay
- 4:17Speaker 1: Daniel Jones. They did not pick up his fit year option.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He then has this incredible season where they win all
- 4:24Speaker 1: those games by one scorer less, the coaches Coach of
- 4:26Speaker 1: the Year, and yet they weren't rushing to pay him.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It went to the very bitter end. He fired his
- 4:31Speaker 1: agents with a week left in the negotiating process. Daniel
- 4:34Speaker 1: Jones was represented by CAA his entire career. He fires CAAA,
- 4:37Speaker 1: hires athletes first. They take it to the absolute wire
- 4:41Speaker 1: and like in the final minutes before free agency starts,
- 4:45Speaker 1: Daniel Jones signs this crazy not crazy crazy is relatively speaking,
- 4:51Speaker 1: but a big, big contract to be the Giants quarterback.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And now if you look at it, all you know
- 4:57Speaker 1: in the rear view, and it's eight months later, it's like,
- 5:01Speaker 1: what was the alternatives? Like they did? Could they have
- 5:04Speaker 1: rolled the days? Do they end up with Will Levis
- 5:05Speaker 1: as their quarterback? Do they say let's just go with
- 5:08Speaker 1: Tyrod this year? There weren't many alternatives, but they did
- 5:10Speaker 1: pay him that big money. Now they're on the hook
- 5:11Speaker 1: not only for this year, but definitely for next year.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And those two teams are both one and three. The
- 5:18Speaker 1: Giants loan victory over a Cardinals team that had a
- 5:22Speaker 1: miracle comeback. The Jets loan victory was Week one and
- 5:25Speaker 1: what was one of the most wild finishes in NFL
- 5:29Speaker 1: season if you look at it now, they somehow beat
- 5:32Speaker 1: the Bills that look like they're a locomotive and it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: two one in three teams the biggest media market in Aaron.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I feel so much better about the Jets right now
- 5:42Speaker 1: than I do the New York Giants, as a Buffalo
- 5:45Speaker 1: Bills fan who also quote unquote claims is a New
- 5:48Speaker 1: York team, you know, I'm talking about the city when
- 5:49Speaker 1: I talk about New York team from afar. When you
- 5:52Speaker 1: look at the Jets and the Giants, what's your feel?
- 5:55Speaker 3: So, I mean, going back to Zach Wilson, it did
- 5:58Speaker 3: kind of feel like in the past twelve months he's
- 6:02Speaker 3: lost the job three times because he was the starter,
- 6:05Speaker 3: and then he lost it, and then Rogers came in,
- 6:07Speaker 3: he lost it again, and then he Rogers gets hurt,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and then as soon as that game's over, everyone's just like,
- 6:13Speaker 3: who can the Jets get Can they get Flacco? Can
- 6:16Speaker 3: they It's like it's he just is losing it again
- 6:18Speaker 3: and then to suddenly have this game. Yeah, you're right,
- 6:21Speaker 3: like he's not going to be the news this week,
- 6:23Speaker 3: which is great for him. And as opposed to Jones,
- 6:27Speaker 3: who I don't know. I mean like he didn't, he
- 6:31Speaker 3: didn't do himself any favors, but that line, I mean
- 6:34Speaker 3: he was he would. Yeah, you can't blame that.
- 6:37Speaker 1: But I pushed back on that, and I know this
- 6:39Speaker 1: is not fair, and I sound like I got something
- 6:41Speaker 1: personal against Daniel Jones. I don't. I was his biggest
- 6:43Speaker 1: cheerleader last year when he was proving the same doubters
- 6:46Speaker 1: that brave Zach you know he was. He did it,
- 6:48Speaker 1: he won, they went to playoffs. They beat a Minnesota
- 6:50Speaker 1: team on the road in the very hostile environment, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: he played great. I am watching on Sunday on my
- 6:57Speaker 1: little phone on the red Zone YouTube, which has been fantastic,
- 7:01Speaker 1: if I can. The Steelers defense, which suffocated everybody the
- 7:06Speaker 1: last few weeks and was absolutely dominant the previous week.
- 7:10Speaker 1: In a Sunday night game against the Raiders, I'm watching CJ.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Stroud behind an offensive line that doesn't have Howard, that
- 7:18Speaker 1: doesn't have Tunzel, that is down four starters, and CJ
- 7:22Speaker 1: Stroud looks like Dan Marino throwing the ball to Nico
- 7:24Speaker 1: Collins in Tank Dell and I'm like, all right, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: know he's a number two overall pick and you expect
- 7:29Speaker 1: that someone to be like, don't tell me about the
- 7:31Speaker 1: offensive line, Like figure this out. The Giants had eleven
- 7:34Speaker 1: days to prepare for this game. They got blown out
- 7:36Speaker 1: by the Niners on the road. Fine, you know whatever,
- 7:38Speaker 1: that's okay, No Saquon no Andrew Tomas. Eleven days to
- 7:41Speaker 1: prepare for the Seattle Seahawks, who, by the way, Andy
- 7:45Speaker 1: Dalton sliced up last week. I mean Andy Dalton walked
- 7:47Speaker 1: in there with Carolina winless team and put up a
- 7:50Speaker 1: ton of yards and looked fine against Seattle. Suddenly the
- 7:53Speaker 1: Seattle defenses of Steel Curtain or the Legion of Boom,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and with you know, eleven days to prepare for that
- 8:00Speaker 1: Seattle defense, the Giants could not do anything on offense.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I'm sorry if this sounds very New York folk and
- 8:06Speaker 1: your listener of the season and you're like, guys, there's
- 8:08Speaker 1: more teams. It's just two one in three teams, two
- 8:11Speaker 1: very different feels. Can I go through story time for
- 8:14Speaker 1: a little bit on what my Sunday was like, yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: let's go, all right if heelsen this podcast. You know,
- 8:20Speaker 1: I travel quite a bit for the NFL during the
- 8:23Speaker 1: season and the season with Peter Schreger, but it's sometimes
- 8:26Speaker 1: the season of Peter Schreger. And that's because this is
- 8:29Speaker 1: my podcast and we can do what we want. iHeart
- 8:32Speaker 1: in the NFL said, tell the stories that we don't know. Well,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I'll give you a story. I had a really cool
- 8:38Speaker 1: Sunday and this is one of those pinch me moments
- 8:40Speaker 1: where I'm like, I'm actually paid to do this. I
- 8:41Speaker 1: am a very lucky guy. Sunday I usually travel from
- 8:47Speaker 1: on a Saturday morning from New York to Los Angeles
- 8:50Speaker 1: and do the Fox NFL kickoff show in studio. I
- 8:53Speaker 1: got a special exemption this weekend because the Eagles, the
- 8:56Speaker 1: defending NFC champions, were undefeated. They only have two home
- 9:03Speaker 1: one o'clock games this entire season. Is that not nuts?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Eagles fans only get to two to one o'clock games
- 9:11Speaker 1: out of all their home games, six of them are
- 9:15Speaker 1: either four o'clock Thursday night, Sunday night, or Monday night.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So with that in mind, I reached out to the
- 9:24Speaker 1: Fox NFL folks and said, hey, this could be a
- 9:26Speaker 1: cool opportunity. I'm never going to get a chance to
- 9:28Speaker 1: do Eagles this year from Philly. I can take a
- 9:30Speaker 1: train that can drive down whatever. Let me get the
- 9:33Speaker 1: one opportunity to interview the head coach before the game
- 9:36Speaker 1: where we can do it on the pregame show. Now,
- 9:37Speaker 1: of course the Eagles have to approve that. Nick Sirianni
- 9:40Speaker 1: has to say, sure, I don't mind seconds before kickoff
- 9:42Speaker 1: talking to you and doing three questions. Fortunately enough, the
- 9:45Speaker 1: producers at Fox, the executives at Fox who are great,
- 9:47Speaker 1: We're like, that's perfect because we're doing Commanders Eagles talk.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Why don't we use that as our lift off point.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You'll be there, you'll get a feel for it. You
- 9:54Speaker 1: can do that game. So I go to Philly early
- 9:58Speaker 1: Sunday and I'm there in the bowels and I got
- 10:00Speaker 1: to experience game day in Philly, which was awesome. This
- 10:03Speaker 1: was an amazing atmosphere, and Nick Sirianni was cool enough
- 10:07Speaker 1: to do an interview. I talked about what they've got
- 10:10Speaker 1: going on. I talked about Philly's fan base and how
- 10:13Speaker 1: they've been rallying around this team. But I also talked
- 10:15Speaker 1: about with him the fact that the Commanders beat the
- 10:18Speaker 1: Eagles last year and it was Taylor Heinicke, but it
- 10:21Speaker 1: was the only regular season game that Jalen Hurts lost.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And Sirianni was awesome in the interview, and he was
- 10:28Speaker 1: really honest. He's like, we do not overlook anybody, but
- 10:31Speaker 1: Washington is a divisional opponent and they have given us
- 10:35Speaker 1: some really good fights the last few years. We will
- 10:37Speaker 1: not be overlooking this, sure enough. I do the interview.
- 10:40Speaker 1: It's great. I get to roam the field, and here
- 10:42Speaker 1: are some of the people I spoke to off camera
- 10:45Speaker 1: for extended amounts of time. I got to talk to
- 10:48Speaker 1: Howie Roseman, the GM of the Eagles, and we had
- 10:50Speaker 1: a very candid conversation about the selections of not only
- 10:54Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, but Nolan Smith and Kyrie Ringo, who were
- 10:57Speaker 1: from Georgia, what that connection was like, and how he
- 10:59Speaker 1: made about those picks. Very interesting talk from how I
- 11:04Speaker 1: then had a good chat with their defense of line
- 11:06Speaker 1: coach Jeremiah Washburn, who has been there and was in
- 11:11Speaker 1: Detroit before this. Jeremiah, I don't know if he would
- 11:14Speaker 1: be comfortable with me saying it. So here we are.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm going to say it anyway. I said, Uh, what
- 11:18Speaker 1: do you see in Jalen Carter? He's like, this dude
- 11:23Speaker 1: is an absolute bohemo. This guy is the real deal.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And he said Fletcher Cox said it best. And I
- 11:28Speaker 1: don't know if he said it publicly or if he
- 11:30Speaker 1: said it just to Jeremiah said anything he goes, Fletcher
- 11:32Speaker 1: Cox said it best. I'm like, what if Fletch have
- 11:34Speaker 1: to say? He says. Fletcher Cock says that Jalen Carter
- 11:37Speaker 1: wakes up and he gets out of bed and he
- 11:41Speaker 1: looks to what ass what? I was like, Ah, if
- 11:47Speaker 1: you watch him in warmups like I remember, and now
- 11:50Speaker 1: obviously he's in the headlines for the reasons. I remember
- 11:53Speaker 1: Chandler Jones during warm ups when he was with the
- 11:55Speaker 1: Patriots Ones and I had to take a video and
- 11:57Speaker 1: I put it on Twitter. I'm like, this guy's just
- 11:59Speaker 1: just just it's a different speed and like it's and
- 12:03Speaker 1: Aaron Donald. I get to watch him pregame who And
- 12:06Speaker 1: this is me as a sportswriter slash podcaster trying to
- 12:09Speaker 1: imitate move. If you're watching on video, I'm doing that.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And if you're listening to the audio, the who is
- 12:14Speaker 1: me like doing Jalen Carter was destroying tackling dummies for
- 12:18Speaker 1: the end. I'm like, oh, so, like, I get that
- 12:20Speaker 1: experience and you're on the game. I get that on
- 12:22Speaker 1: the field. Then I went to the Washington side and
- 12:24Speaker 1: I talked to Jason right there president for a bit
- 12:26Speaker 1: and just about the new blood there, and it was
- 12:28Speaker 1: really cool. I love being at games. I love being
- 12:31Speaker 1: at prega and then a game breaks out and it's
- 12:34Speaker 1: absolutely awesome. The Washington Commanders were not scared of the
- 12:37Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. They had not a flicker of hesitation when
- 12:41Speaker 1: they went in there. They scored on their opening drive,
- 12:43Speaker 1: they scored on their second drive, like they came right
- 12:45Speaker 1: down the field, and they tested Philly. Philly comes out
- 12:49Speaker 1: with the win. They're four and oh. They don't apologize
- 12:51Speaker 1: for anything. But to get a field for both teams
- 12:53Speaker 1: was huge for me. But I wasn't done, Aaron, No,
- 12:57Speaker 1: I wasn't done. I reached out to the Jets earlier
- 13:01Speaker 1: in the week and I said, I'm not in Los
- 13:02Speaker 1: Angeles doing the pregame show. I'm actually in Philadelphia. That
- 13:05Speaker 1: game should around three thirty four o'clock. If I get
- 13:09Speaker 1: on my horse, I can make it to Jets Chiefs,
- 13:13Speaker 1: which felt like more than just a football game. It
- 13:15Speaker 1: felt like a pop culture moment because of obvious reasons
- 13:18Speaker 1: of who was in the building. I was there to
- 13:21Speaker 1: get a feel for the defending champions, the Chiefs, but
- 13:24Speaker 1: also to see what the Jets had left in the tank.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And if I happened to end up with Taylor Swift
- 13:30Speaker 1: and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and you name who,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and if Blake Lively wants to celebrate with me, that's fine.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I would have been Okay, I wouldn't. I don't want
- 13:38Speaker 1: to be the story. But if I happened to be
- 13:40Speaker 1: the story, then.
- 13:41Speaker 4: So be it.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Right. Well, I didn't see any of those people, but
- 13:44Speaker 1: I got on my horse. I get to the game. Pregame,
- 13:47Speaker 1: Jets are cool enough to credential me. I have a
- 13:49Speaker 1: press box seat, Like, I'm excited, I'll be there pregame.
- 13:52Speaker 1: I walk on the field and I'm just walking around
- 13:55Speaker 1: and you know, one of our guests and our friends
- 13:57Speaker 1: in my Brooklyn homie, Paul Rudd is there with his
- 13:59Speaker 1: entire family, and Paul's like, come over here. I'm like, eh,
- 14:02Speaker 1: I don't wanna. All right, he's over there on the
- 14:04Speaker 1: Chiefs sideline there, go over there, say hi to him
- 14:08Speaker 1: and Brett Veach, the GM and the Chiefs is there.
- 14:10Speaker 1: We're talking for twenty minutes, Paul, his son, Jack, Me,
- 14:14Speaker 1: Brett Veach, We're all talking about all the different players
- 14:17Speaker 1: on the Chiefs, not Mahomes and Kelsey, but like what
- 14:19Speaker 1: Trent McDuffie has done this year to make him one
- 14:22Speaker 1: of an elite corners, What George carl Laftis has done,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and what kind of student car Laftis is. Carlaftis is
- 14:27Speaker 1: one of these guys that Veach was like, he's like
- 14:29Speaker 1: the teacher's pet. He is in there every morning talking
- 14:31Speaker 1: to our defensive line coach. He's got film, he's trying
- 14:34Speaker 1: to do the work. The message in Kansas City is
- 14:37Speaker 1: it can't just be Mahomes and Kelsey. These other guys
- 14:40Speaker 1: have to step up. And if you watch that game,
- 14:42Speaker 1: it was Pachaco, it was Noah Gray, it was Willie Gay,
- 14:46Speaker 1: it was younger players stepping up because Mahomes did not
- 14:49Speaker 1: seem to have the Mahomes game until the very end
- 14:51Speaker 1: where he pulls it out. But as I'm walking, I
- 14:55Speaker 1: get a text from someone on the Jets, not a player,
- 14:58Speaker 1: not a coach, someone else, an executive type person, and
- 15:02Speaker 1: they reach out. I don't want to give their name
- 15:03Speaker 1: because if you give their name, you're revealing your sources
- 15:05Speaker 1: in this one. Hey, I see you over on the
- 15:08Speaker 1: chief sideline. Come say hello real quick. So I make
- 15:11Speaker 1: my way over to the Jets area and I'm on
- 15:13Speaker 1: the sidelines, but I'm not trying to come too close
- 15:15Speaker 1: to the team because it's before the game, and you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I don't have all access in this situation. And as
- 15:22Speaker 1: I'm doing that, I get a little hey, see who's here?
- 15:26Speaker 1: And I looked to my right and he's got a
- 15:28Speaker 1: little smirk on his face. What's up, buddy? Aaron Rodgers
- 15:32Speaker 1: Rogers on the crutches on sidelines. We talked briefly. Didn't
- 15:36Speaker 1: get into the timetable, if you will, but I will
- 15:38Speaker 1: say this, good spirits moving on those crutches. I was
- 15:44Speaker 1: told this would be four weeks or five weeks before
- 15:46Speaker 1: he can be off that scooter. He's on crutches, there's
- 15:49Speaker 1: no boot, He's moving and I'm watching Rogers during pre game. Yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I know everyone's out there and Sauces giving up pep
- 15:57Speaker 1: talk and you got Breize Hall doing the drills, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: I'm not doing the same thing I was doing with
- 16:01Speaker 1: Jalen Carter. While I'm watching the Jets, I'm just focused
- 16:04Speaker 1: on their quarterback who will not see the field till
- 16:06Speaker 1: the least January, if he even does, or December, whatever
- 16:10Speaker 1: the timetable might be. And I'm watching Rogers and he's
- 16:13Speaker 1: not in everybody's face, but he is very active participant
- 16:18Speaker 1: in the conversations on the sidelines with some of these guys.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And I think the Aaron Rodgers effect can be real
- 16:23Speaker 1: because I saw it firsthand how these players. He's not
- 16:27Speaker 1: in their face, he's not demanding spotlight. But like he
- 16:29Speaker 1: spoke to the team on Saturday night, he was there
- 16:31Speaker 1: on Sunday, he was in Woody Johnson's box. All good.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think that there's no coincidence that Zach Wilson played
- 16:39Speaker 1: the game of his life and that Rogers at least
- 16:41Speaker 1: has been a part of the game planning, and it's
- 16:43Speaker 1: been a part of the team on Saturday. But here's
- 16:46Speaker 1: where the night takes the Peter Schrager twist, and I
- 16:50Speaker 1: just end up wherever. Okay, So amongst the people I
- 16:54Speaker 1: spoke to pregame, it's not just Paul Roden Bretviach like
- 16:57Speaker 1: I saw. I talked with Clark Hunt for a long time.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And Clark Hunt is obviously a guest on the show
- 17:03Speaker 1: during Super Bowl week, but he's the chairman and CEO
- 17:07Speaker 1: president of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mark Donovan, who is
- 17:11Speaker 1: their CEO in maybe different titles with Clark and Mark,
- 17:16Speaker 1: talked to him for a while getting a feel for,
- 17:18Speaker 1: you know, the Chiefs organization as a whole. As I'm
- 17:21Speaker 1: getting that grasp there, I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna go
- 17:24Speaker 1: up to the press box, but I do the Rogers thing.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I talked to him for a bit. As I'm stepping out,
- 17:28Speaker 1: I you know, get a tap on the shoulder from
- 17:31Speaker 1: someone else in the Jets organization says, why don't you
- 17:33Speaker 1: come by for a second and just say hello, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 1: to some of the people at the highest level of
- 17:39Speaker 1: the ownership group, if you can, if during the game,
- 17:41Speaker 1: if you want just I come in, just say hi. Whatever.
- 17:44Speaker 1: So Christopher Johnson is, you know, with Woody Johnson obviously
- 17:50Speaker 1: owners of the Jets. I was in the press box.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I'm a journalist. I've wearing that hat. But I'm like,
- 17:55Speaker 1: if I got the invite, do you say hi? Do
- 17:57Speaker 1: you not say hi? So I just pop in before
- 17:59Speaker 1: the game and I walk in just to say hello,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and I look around this room and they were on
- 18:03Speaker 1: the big deviatrios. I don't think here was the crew
- 18:06Speaker 1: that was in this suite. Everyone's talking about Ryan Reynolds
- 18:09Speaker 1: and Blake Lively and Hugh Jackman. And you know, I
- 18:14Speaker 1: respect the Jets as a business because as NBC went
- 18:17Speaker 1: to that box seventeen times, I don't think the Jets
- 18:20Speaker 1: showed Taylor Swift once on their in house jumbo tron.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And they're like, you know what, they're here to root
- 18:25Speaker 1: for the Chiefs. We're not showing them. The box that
- 18:29Speaker 1: they should have shown was the crew that I saw
- 18:31Speaker 1: watching the game together. And I'll give a quick story
- 18:33Speaker 1: that was hilarious. But I walk in, I say high sheepishly,
- 18:37Speaker 1: and I'm like whatever, I'm an invisible ghost in that room.
- 18:40Speaker 1: In that box, you want to talk about a murderer's
- 18:44Speaker 1: row of like of like guys that I would want
- 18:46Speaker 1: to have beers with. First guy, Ray freaking Romano was
- 18:51Speaker 1: in the room. Ray Romano's in the room. So Ray
- 18:56Speaker 1: Romano's in the.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Room, and I'm like, you know, do you say some
- 18:59Speaker 5: of the others like, I don't think Ray No's but
- 19:01Speaker 5: as we film, I don't think raynols No. I know
- 19:03Speaker 5: Ray doesn't know this, but as we film this podcast
- 19:05Speaker 5: right now and we record this, Aaron, you and I
- 19:09Speaker 5: are in this cool, little like green room that Sny
- 19:12Speaker 5: puts us in, which is where we film Good Morning
- 19:14Speaker 5: Football downtown in Manhattan. This room, for four years I
- 19:18Speaker 5: shared with Nate Burlison as a dressing room. Nate would
- 19:22Speaker 5: get down to his skivvies in front of me, put
- 19:23Speaker 5: on his really fancy clothes and look great. I would
- 19:26Speaker 5: throw on my hooded sweatshirt and my new balanced sneakers
- 19:30Speaker 5: and go and do the job. But Nate and I
- 19:31Speaker 5: would be in here every morning from five.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Thirty to six point fifty, I would say, And Nate
- 19:36Speaker 1: became a best friend and her brother. Great. Everyone thinks
- 19:38Speaker 1: we're breaking down all twenty two film like we're Brian
- 19:41Speaker 1: Baldinger that we did not watch football in the morning.
- 19:43Speaker 1: We get football all day. Nate and I would watch
- 19:46Speaker 1: Everybody Loves Raymond reruns on TBS. There's a TD in here,
- 19:50Speaker 1: volume up. We probably watched eight seasons, no every episode,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and it was not even a conversation. We'd watch the
- 19:55Speaker 1: commercials everything. Everybody loves Raymonds. So here's Ray Romano as
- 19:59Speaker 1: I walk in and he's in there, and I'm like,
- 20:02Speaker 1: do I say something doing not another wrinkle? Last week
- 20:06Speaker 1: I'm on my Jet Blue flight or two weeks ago
- 20:09Speaker 1: to Fox, Jet Blue is running a couple movies. There
- 20:14Speaker 1: was a movie and maybe you can google it real quick, Aaron,
- 20:16Speaker 1: because I wasn't even familiar with it. I didn't see
- 20:18Speaker 1: any promotion for it, but I think it's called like
- 20:19Speaker 1: Somewhere in Queens type in Ray Ramono.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Somewhere in Queens.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a ninety minute movie that had me
- 20:26Speaker 1: laughing and crying. It was fantastic. I think Ray Ramono
- 20:29Speaker 1: produced it.
- 20:30Speaker 3: He might have his directorial debut and he's worked on
- 20:33Speaker 3: the screenplay.
- 20:34Speaker 1: This movie was great. And the story is raised a
- 20:36Speaker 1: part of an Italian family in Queens and everyone goes
- 20:40Speaker 1: into one line of work. They're in construction. Sebastian Maniscalco
- 20:43Speaker 1: plays his brother. Very quaint, small movie, and Laurie Metcalf
- 20:47Speaker 1: is fantastic as the wife. And like you're talking about
- 20:49Speaker 1: like Ray Ramono and Laurie Metcalf and Sebastian. Of course
- 20:52Speaker 1: there's laughs in this thing. But the story is his
- 20:55Speaker 1: son is a pretty good high school basketball player and
- 20:59Speaker 1: he's a quiet kid. And I told him. I was like,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you know, that's why I do go up to him.
- 21:03Speaker 1: But you know, Daniel Jones is the character in this
- 21:06Speaker 1: like quiet great athlete, doesn't say much and a girl
- 21:09Speaker 1: breaks his heart. And I'm not giving any spoilers away,
- 21:12Speaker 1: but like the girl breaks his heart and breaks his
- 21:14Speaker 1: will to want to go play college basketball, and Ray
- 21:17Speaker 1: goes above maybe where he should go. His character does
- 21:21Speaker 1: to talk to the girl to convince her to maybe
- 21:23Speaker 1: give the son and a second chance. And oh, it's
- 21:26Speaker 1: a story. It is a beautiful movie. And I just
- 21:28Speaker 1: seen it and I cried on the flight, and now
- 21:30Speaker 1: I cried to every movie on the flat. I think
- 21:32Speaker 1: I've cried to like like movies like Taken with like
- 21:35Speaker 1: Lenisan and I cry at the end on Veneer on
- 21:37Speaker 1: a plane, you just cry. Yeah, So Aaron, I'm I'm there,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and I see Ray Romano and I know it's like
- 21:42Speaker 1: he was a director, And I know this movie did
- 21:44Speaker 1: not make you know, major waves. I know it's not
- 21:46Speaker 1: Oscar nominated as of yet or whatever it is. And
- 21:48Speaker 1: I know it wasn't like a critical darling. I haven't
- 21:49Speaker 1: heard anything about it, but I saw it and it
- 21:52Speaker 1: was great. So I went up to him, and of
- 21:53Speaker 1: course everyone goes up to him and talks about everybody
- 21:55Speaker 1: loves Raymond whatever. I just said. You know, I was
- 21:58Speaker 1: on a Jet Blue flight recently and I loved somewhere
- 22:01Speaker 1: in Queens and ray who probably was approached by one
- 22:04Speaker 1: hundred people. You know, his eyes lit up, he smiled
- 22:09Speaker 1: and he was like, dude, thank you so much. He's like,
- 22:11Speaker 1: I've gotten so many comments over the last week or
- 22:14Speaker 1: two about this movie that I put my heart and
- 22:16Speaker 1: soul in. But yes, because it's on the planes, people
- 22:20Speaker 1: are watching it on the planes, and so I'm like,
- 22:22Speaker 1: is it streaming. It's streaming on Hulu and next week,
- 22:25Speaker 1: he said, and it's coming out. And he's like, gosh,
- 22:28Speaker 1: it's crazy because that movie went out in the theater.
- 22:29Speaker 1: We put everything into it. It was like my heart
- 22:31Speaker 1: and the soul and like, and now people are kind
- 22:34Speaker 1: of seeing I go, dude, if that movie came out
- 22:36Speaker 1: ten years ago, it would have gotten a major you know,
- 22:39Speaker 1: a theater, and it would have been if it was
- 22:40Speaker 1: in a traditional situation ten years ago, where people saw
- 22:43Speaker 1: romantic comedies and people watch movies other than Star Wars
- 22:46Speaker 1: and superhero movies. It would have been great. Ray was
- 22:48Speaker 1: so appreciative. I had the greatest experience meeting Ray Romano.
- 22:51Speaker 1: He was so nice, he was so great. And then
- 22:53Speaker 1: it was like game time. He was locked in, Aaron.
- 22:56Speaker 1: The other people in this box sitting off to the side.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I had it took a double take. I was like,
- 23:03Speaker 1: what Kendall Roy himself, enemy Strong was sitting in this box.
- 23:08Speaker 1: And when I tell you, maybe he just didn't want
- 23:10Speaker 1: to talk to anybody, locked the f into the game,
- 23:15Speaker 1: like wearing a Jets hat every play, watching analyzing, no
- 23:20Speaker 1: bathroom breaks, no nothing like he was in. I had
- 23:23Speaker 1: no idea. Jeremy Strong love football. He loves Jets football.
- 23:27Speaker 1: What a great celebrity fan to have the eldest son,
- 23:31Speaker 1: if you will. Gosh, he was still locked in. So
- 23:34Speaker 1: there you go. Those are two like Titans. Next one,
- 23:40Speaker 1: What is your favorite comedy show? Maybe of the last
- 23:43Speaker 1: fifteen twenty years, like when you need like just a laugh,
- 23:46Speaker 1: what's yours? Aaron?
- 23:49Speaker 3: So that came out in the last fifteen to twenty,
- 23:52Speaker 3: Like what's your show probably The Office.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Okay, great, that's perfect answer. The Office is one of
- 23:57Speaker 1: mine too. If it's on, I'll watch it, yeah, if
- 24:00Speaker 1: I need a laugh or if I'm just I will
- 24:03Speaker 1: watch Kurby Your Enthusiasm, and I will specifically watch Leon. Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 1: JB. Smooth was in this box. And I am telling you, Aaron,
- 24:15Speaker 1: the JB. Smooth you see on TV is one hundred
- 24:19Speaker 1: percent to JB Smooth. I saw it in this box.
- 24:22Speaker 1: He sees me and we he's been on the show before,
- 24:25Speaker 1: and immediately it's like, okay, okay, he's here, and here's
- 24:31Speaker 1: here's here's my favorite character in maybe TV history Leon.
- 24:34Speaker 5: And he starts doing that we are not worthy, like
- 24:36Speaker 5: Wayne's world thing to me.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Stop stop stop, comes over and immediately arm around me.
- 24:43Speaker 1: We start talking and you know, the Jets are his team,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and he was talking about Bruce Hopkins. He was talking
- 24:48Speaker 1: about altoon like we go into Jets deep and he
- 24:51Speaker 1: is so great, and then all of a sudden he
- 24:54Speaker 1: goes on this incredible rant if you will slash bit
- 25:00Speaker 1: slash monologue where the I could never imitate him, Like
- 25:04Speaker 1: if I was to imitate him, all I'd be canceled
- 25:07Speaker 1: for trying to limitate him be I just it wouldn't
- 25:10Speaker 1: do him justice. His bit is that sauce is on
- 25:15Speaker 1: the field, but the gravy's in the building. And he's
- 25:20Speaker 1: pointing to himself that he JB. Smooth is the gravy.
- 25:26Speaker 6: A whole bit about sauce on the steel. Gravy is
- 25:30Speaker 6: the building and he's gravy. We talked for a while.
- 25:35Speaker 6: He wants to come on the podcast amazing, will be
- 25:38Speaker 6: a guest. Here's the part that gets a little tricky.
- 25:43Speaker 6: He's with his longtime manager. I'll say his name. His
- 25:45Speaker 6: name is Rick Dorfman.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I don't know Rick. Rick is awesome. Rick comes over,
- 25:50Speaker 1: introduces himself to me, says, JB. Would love to come
- 25:53Speaker 1: on the podcast. Would love to come on the show. Says,
- 25:56Speaker 1: let's exchange numbers. Rick presents me with a q R code.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no no. This is very smart.
- 26:05Speaker 1: This is a great way to do it. He doesn't
- 26:06Speaker 1: have a business card. He says, scan this QR code.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And I scan the QR code and it's all his
- 26:12Speaker 1: contact information. I was like, that was the coolest thing ever.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Phone number, email, everything. There was an app for it.
- 26:21Speaker 1: The app, I believe was called Blink b L I
- 26:23Speaker 1: n Q. He's like, you have to get blink. It's
- 26:25Speaker 1: gonna be a game changer for you to not have
- 26:27Speaker 1: to type in numbers. It's it just QR code. You
- 26:30Speaker 1: scan it. It's great, that's what I do. JB and
- 26:34Speaker 1: I have this incredible experience together. I'm talking, laughing, hugging.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I filmed a video with him. He wanted to film
- 26:42Speaker 1: a video like we had a plat like talking about
- 26:45Speaker 1: if you want the ultimate Ying and Yang, it's probably
- 26:47Speaker 1: Larry David and jbswoth. Yeah, I think we can't talk that.
- 26:50Speaker 1: But like he and I do not look like we
- 26:53Speaker 1: would be uh, you know, regular bedfellows. We got along great.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It was incredible. I get in the car after the game,
- 26:59Speaker 1: which was fantastic. Obviously, I go back to the press box.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I watch from there that I try to beat the
- 27:04Speaker 1: traffic just a little bit, which I did so I
- 27:05Speaker 1: could do Good Morning Football. I had done two games.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I get in the car. I have been up since
- 27:11Speaker 1: four am because I got a full way to go
- 27:13Speaker 1: to Philly and then I was ending the game. I
- 27:15Speaker 1: got in the car around midnight. So that's a long day,
- 27:18Speaker 1: but like two amazing football games. I was on cloud nine.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It like reinvigorated me, like just being in two buildings,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Like I love this sport, I love all of this.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I get back in the car and I'm like, I'm
- 27:28Speaker 1: immediately gonna say great to meet you to this, Rick Drfman.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I go into my phone. It's gone. I can't find anything.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I didn't save whatever that QR code thing was. And
- 27:40Speaker 1: there is no silver lining as we record this on Tuesday,
- 27:43Speaker 1: and this is a call to action. If anyone has
- 27:46Speaker 1: Rick Dorfman's number or email, send it along to me.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I want to have JB. Smooth on the podcast next week.
- 27:52Speaker 1: He was incredible. My day was incredible. I woke up
- 27:55Speaker 1: the next morning, I'm like, I feel like I completely
- 27:58Speaker 1: ready to go and roaring to go, and I'm excited
- 28:02Speaker 1: by a lot of stuff around the NFL.
- 28:04Speaker 4: CJ.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Stroud looks amazing, Anthony Richard Loss looks amazing. Mcvay's team
- 28:08Speaker 1: is fighting despite players that you know named Aaron Donald, Pukinakua,
- 28:12Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford. And maybe that's it on the roster. There's
- 28:15Speaker 1: so much good around the league right now. Maybe there's
- 28:19Speaker 1: no better story than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Which leads
- 28:23Speaker 1: to our guests for the week, Buccaneers GM Jason Light.
- 28:36Speaker 1: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had the third most win
- 28:39Speaker 1: since twenty twenty. They have had the fourth most regular
- 28:42Speaker 1: season win since twenty twenty and if you look at
- 28:45Speaker 1: their roster, they are number three on highest percentage of
- 28:50Speaker 1: home grown talent, which means they have drafted or signed
- 28:54Speaker 1: undrafted guys themselves who are now playing. The general manager
- 28:58Speaker 1: of the tam Bay Buccaneers is the architect of this
- 29:01Speaker 1: team and he is joining us on the season with
- 29:04Speaker 1: Peter Scheger. Mister Jason Light the Bucks.
- 29:06Speaker 4: How are we doing doing great? Man? Appreciate you having
- 29:10Speaker 4: me on.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I figured the only time I can get you is
- 29:14Speaker 1: during the bye week, and it certainly helps when the
- 29:17Speaker 1: team is three and one as opposed to a different record.
- 29:20Speaker 1: But you and I have known each other for many years,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and I have to say the Tom Brady stuff was great,
- 29:25Speaker 1: and of course last year again they were great. To
- 29:27Speaker 1: see this team at the top of the NFC sound
- 29:29Speaker 1: standings as we head towards the bye I don't think
- 29:32Speaker 1: a lot of people saw that, me included. How proud
- 29:34Speaker 1: are you of this team? First mouth of football?
- 29:36Speaker 4: Well well, first of all, we've got a long season
- 29:40Speaker 4: ahead of us, so I know we're not putting the
- 29:42Speaker 4: cart before the horse here. But you know, I'm very
- 29:46Speaker 4: proud of the coaching staff, the football staff, everybody here
- 29:50Speaker 4: in the building, but then the players too. But I
- 29:52Speaker 4: will say that I went on record several times in
- 29:55Speaker 4: training camp people kind of were writing us off, and
- 29:57Speaker 4: I said, I just liked the DNA of this team.
- 30:00Speaker 4: I just liked the way that it was all coming
- 30:03Speaker 4: together and the players to prove to the world that
- 30:08Speaker 4: you know that there we still have good players. We're
- 30:10Speaker 4: still a good team. And and so I'm not surprised
- 30:13Speaker 4: that you know that we started off the way we did.
- 30:16Speaker 4: You know, we have great coaches too.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it's sneaky with what the Bucks
- 30:20Speaker 1: roster is. And I think a lot of people, if
- 30:22Speaker 1: you looked at it from thirty thousand feet, said, okay,
- 30:24Speaker 1: Tom Brady was dropped in, they won, they win the
- 30:27Speaker 1: next year, all right, tom Brady's moved out of the thing,
- 30:30Speaker 1: and it's like, all right, they're going to fall apart.
- 30:32Speaker 1: But I'm looking at some numbers that my research team
- 30:36Speaker 1: has helped put together. Most total snaps by a team's
- 30:40Speaker 1: own first through fifth round pick since twenty fourteen, and
- 30:44Speaker 1: it's the Bucks by a mile. And it's most total
- 30:47Speaker 1: games started by a team's own first through fifth round
- 30:50Speaker 1: pick since twenty fourteen, and it's the Bucks by a mile.
- 30:53Speaker 1: You go through these guys, whether it be Mike Evans
- 30:56Speaker 1: or Godwin or vite Veya or Devin White or Jamel Dee,
- 30:59Speaker 1: all over the guys over the years. This is homegrown talent.
- 31:02Speaker 1: There's something to that when you look at this team,
- 31:05Speaker 1: do you see this is like there's a sense of
- 31:07Speaker 1: pride that, hey, we drafted these guys and for the
- 31:10Speaker 1: most part, a lot of them are performing at a
- 31:12Speaker 1: high level and key spots.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Oh absolutely, I mean that's that's what we in personnel.
- 31:17Speaker 4: I mean we want to we all aspire to as
- 31:21Speaker 4: a GM, as a scout, as a personnel director or
- 31:25Speaker 4: what have you. You want to you want to grow your own.
- 31:28Speaker 4: You want to you want to bring them in, you
- 31:31Speaker 4: want to develop them, You want them to understand the
- 31:33Speaker 4: way that we do things as an organization. You you
- 31:37Speaker 4: want to give them, you want to reward them with
- 31:39Speaker 4: contracts and keep your own and you know that's what
- 31:43Speaker 4: we're doing. And you know we've got we've got a
- 31:45Speaker 4: great First of all, I the only thing I will
- 31:49Speaker 4: pat myself on the back for is I've hired extremely
- 31:53Speaker 4: well that's the only thing I'm going to say that
- 31:56Speaker 4: about me. That our staff has done an outstanding job.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Whether it's the scouts, the personnel directors, spy, Tech, Greenburn, Jackie,
- 32:03Speaker 4: I mean the whole I could name everybody. I'm going
- 32:05Speaker 4: to leave somebody out, but the coaching staff.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Don't forget my boy Byron down there are the best
- 32:10Speaker 1: scouts in the game.
- 32:11Speaker 4: There's no doubt.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Give Byron love Byron.
- 32:13Speaker 4: He has been here for a long time and he
- 32:16Speaker 4: is incredible, incredible, So I could go on and on.
- 32:20Speaker 4: So but anyway, and our coaching staff just having the
- 32:23Speaker 4: patience with these players. So it's it's been awesome bringing
- 32:28Speaker 4: everyone to be on the same page.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's it's cool. And even look at this
- 32:33Speaker 1: team now, and Baker's the new story, and Baker people
- 32:37Speaker 1: doubted and Bakers spent time in Carolina and then was
- 32:40Speaker 1: of course with the Rams left over, and Baker looks
- 32:43Speaker 1: great and competent, and you guys go into New Orleans
- 32:45Speaker 1: and win the signing of Baker Mayfield is one story.
- 32:48Speaker 1: The other story is how well he has taken to
- 32:50Speaker 1: this team and they've taken to him. Can you go
- 32:52Speaker 1: through the Baker Mayfield experience for you guys when you
- 32:54Speaker 1: were looking after Brady hung him up, like, what's the
- 32:57Speaker 1: next step?
- 32:58Speaker 4: Yeah, well, you know Baker. Now, as it turns out, Baker,
- 33:03Speaker 4: he's a very very smart person. I knew he was smart,
- 33:07Speaker 4: you know, we did our due diligence on him coming out.
- 33:10Speaker 4: We weren't looking for a quarterback that year. But knew
- 33:13Speaker 4: that he was smart. I didn't realize just how incredibly
- 33:16Speaker 4: smart he is. And he was targeting us, I mean
- 33:20Speaker 4: maybe more than we were targeting him.
- 33:22Speaker 1: And he saw a little flirt.
- 33:24Speaker 4: He saw this as an awesome opportunity for him, you know,
- 33:28Speaker 4: And we told him from the beginning that this is
- 33:29Speaker 4: going to be a you're going to be in a
- 33:31Speaker 4: competition here because we really like Kyle Trask. And he
- 33:34Speaker 4: didn't you know, as you know, Baker, he didn't flinch.
- 33:37Speaker 4: He accepted that and you know, he just ran with it.
- 33:40Speaker 4: And it was a good competition. But we saw a
- 33:43Speaker 4: lot out of Kyle that we loved to see too.
- 33:45Speaker 4: He was doing a did a hell of a job
- 33:47Speaker 4: for us, but he is such a you know, even
- 33:53Speaker 4: as I go around town, people know what's Baker like?
- 33:55Speaker 4: Is he a good guy? It's like, I don't know
- 33:58Speaker 4: where this started that he wasn't a good guy. And
- 34:02Speaker 4: I mean, I think you can point to a few
- 34:04Speaker 4: things that maybe people got the wrong pression of him.
- 34:07Speaker 4: But he's a freaking awesome dude. He is a dude
- 34:11Speaker 4: and the players saw it right away. I mean, he's
- 34:14Speaker 4: whether he's taken the lineman to the Bahamas, you know,
- 34:18Speaker 4: during on our break, during camp, before the first you know,
- 34:22Speaker 4: after final cuts to go golf, or he's he's spotted
- 34:26Speaker 4: around town at dive bars with a different group of
- 34:28Speaker 4: position group with receivers, with Mike Evans, you know, with
- 34:32Speaker 4: a godwin with these guys. He really knows he's not
- 34:35Speaker 4: doing it's not fake. He really knows how to how
- 34:37Speaker 4: to be a dude with the team and they love.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Him and and he and he lays it out there.
- 34:43Speaker 1: You see him throwing blocks, you see the hit he
- 34:45Speaker 1: took against the Saints on Sunday, and it's like he's
- 34:48Speaker 1: gonna leave it all out in the field. What's your
- 34:49Speaker 1: favorite Baker's story between you and him interacting, because I
- 34:52Speaker 1: know coaches who've had him and are like, you know, Nick,
- 34:55Speaker 1: they had him last year for a small window and
- 34:57Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, Big Baker's hilarious too. He's funny as hell. Like,
- 35:00Speaker 1: have you had a moment where he's had a snide
- 35:02Speaker 1: commenters or cast a comment where you're like, this is
- 35:04Speaker 1: one of us. This guy's a.
- 35:05Speaker 4: Fun Yeah, a few. I probably shouldn't tell them on this,
- 35:12Speaker 4: you know what. You know, what's really interesting is so
- 35:15Speaker 4: I was born in this very small town in Nebraska, Freemont, Nebraska.
- 35:19Speaker 4: It's about twenty thousand people. It's kind of halfway between
- 35:22Speaker 4: Omahon and Lincoln. And when I was young, we moved
- 35:25Speaker 4: to Colorado. So I grew up in Colorado. But that's
- 35:27Speaker 4: where my parents both were from that area, and that's
- 35:31Speaker 4: where my grandparents, you know, that's where they settled and
- 35:35Speaker 4: all that stuff. So anyway that when we finally agreed
- 35:38Speaker 4: to terms with Baker, I texted him, Hey, congrats, we're
- 35:42Speaker 4: celebrating here. We're excited to have you. He said, yeah,
- 35:45Speaker 4: you know, my wife is from your hometown.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Get out of here's some Freemont, Nebraska.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Freemont, Nebraska. So I texted my mom and my sister.
- 35:54Speaker 4: They are like, oh yeah, the May family. Oh my god.
- 35:57Speaker 4: They founded Fremont. You know, the library is named after him.
- 36:00Speaker 4: You know, there's a you know, their names on buildings.
- 36:03Speaker 4: I mean, but she's kind of a big deal in Fremont, Nebraska.
- 36:07Speaker 4: But anyway, she turns out she's a wonderful person. She
- 36:11Speaker 4: has a suite right next to my wife's at the stadium,
- 36:14Speaker 4: and which could be an issue I guess with my
- 36:18Speaker 4: when my father in law sits in there, you know,
- 36:21Speaker 4: when things aren't going well, he tends to you. But anyway,
- 36:24Speaker 4: we already warned her about that.
- 36:26Speaker 1: But you hear him banging on the wall, don't don't know,
- 36:29Speaker 1: that's not that's not. Everything's okay, that's just my father
- 36:32Speaker 1: in law.
- 36:33Speaker 4: But it just kind of tells you the researching, the
- 36:35Speaker 4: detail he went into to know that I was born
- 36:37Speaker 4: in his wife's hometown. So that's pretty cool.
- 36:41Speaker 1: That's wild. Love this team right now, and love the
- 36:44Speaker 1: juice that you guys have as you look at the
- 36:47Speaker 1: roster up and down and you got all these guys
- 36:49Speaker 1: that you guys drafted. Todd Bowles is the head coach,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and a lot of people after last year said oh,
- 36:56Speaker 1: I don't know if he could be the coach and
- 36:58Speaker 1: after a post Brady world and yet this team for
- 37:00Speaker 1: spinning to Todd, He's never gonna have the SoundBite that
- 37:02Speaker 1: goes viral. What do you see from Todd Bowles on
- 37:05Speaker 1: a day to day basis that you guys know, he's
- 37:07Speaker 1: the man for this squad.
- 37:09Speaker 4: He's he's got incredible patience, very focused, but he's a
- 37:15Speaker 4: he's a great teacher. So it'll be once or twice
- 37:20Speaker 4: a week you go down. You know, I'll pop into
- 37:22Speaker 4: his office, you know, several times a day just to
- 37:25Speaker 4: talk about little things with sometimes just a book, but
- 37:29Speaker 4: he'll have It's not uncommon for him to have the
- 37:32Speaker 4: entire secondary sitting in his office, sprawled out couches and
- 37:36Speaker 4: having food delivered up there and him just having a
- 37:40Speaker 4: session with them, just going over tape and just talking
- 37:44Speaker 4: through things.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Saw picture this, you got, you got Windfield, you got,
- 37:47Speaker 1: you got all these guys and they come in and
- 37:48Speaker 1: they're just hanging with the coach. It's not an instructional
- 37:51Speaker 1: period where it's you're in a lecture situation.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Well it turns into that casual, It turns casual, but
- 37:56Speaker 4: it's become like a weekly routine where he just wants
- 37:59Speaker 4: to get them all on the same page.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And it's, uh, this is the head coach talking to
- 38:02Speaker 1: a position group.
- 38:03Speaker 4: I love this in his office, not in a meeting rooms.
- 38:06Speaker 4: So it's I mean, he just that's just been common
- 38:09Speaker 4: of him since for him, since he's been our been
- 38:12Speaker 4: here as the defensive coordinators as well for all positions.
- 38:15Speaker 4: You can see offensive players pop in and just he's
- 38:18Speaker 4: just a very h He's got a very soothing way
- 38:21Speaker 4: about him that that makes you been very fiery behind
- 38:25Speaker 4: the scenes as well.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that Rende went into the Hall of
- 38:29Speaker 1: Fame this year, and I love that this organization with
- 38:32Speaker 1: so much a part of it. It wasn't just oh, here's
- 38:33Speaker 1: a former player, like I know from knowing Ronde and
- 38:36Speaker 1: I know you very well, like he is a frequent
- 38:38Speaker 1: visitor to the building. How much has Rende Barber played
- 38:41Speaker 1: a role and not only this team's young players and success,
- 38:45Speaker 1: but also for you and the guys in the organization
- 38:47Speaker 1: to see a former buccaneer so active and vibrant in
- 38:50Speaker 1: the team's day to day.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Yeah, first of all, Rende quickly became one of my
- 38:55Speaker 4: closer friends when I got the job here, it's going
- 38:58Speaker 4: on year ten. I just love Ronde. He's our families
- 39:01Speaker 4: are close, and jeez, you know you talk about this
- 39:05Speaker 4: summer of joy, George, this is the year of Ronde.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I mean, go on. He feels like I've been to
- 39:11Speaker 4: about a million parties for Ronde's Hall of Fame already.
- 39:16Speaker 4: But and then that's it and well deserved, well deserved.
- 39:18Speaker 4: But I was actually just texting with him a few
- 39:20Speaker 4: minutes ago before I came on here, Pat he was
- 39:22Speaker 4: talking about the what he was excited about to play
- 39:25Speaker 4: some of our players in the secondary. So he's you know,
- 39:28Speaker 4: he's always welcome. Here's such a like he never missed
- 39:33Speaker 4: a game, he never missed a practice.
- 39:36Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 39:37Speaker 4: I never missed a practice. I mean, it's it's crazy.
- 39:40Speaker 4: You never see that. He should be an inspiration to
- 39:43Speaker 4: a lot of our players.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm sure they come in they see him
- 39:48Speaker 1: and he's president, and it does go a long way.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I go back to last like ten years with you.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Obviously we talk about the Jamis era, and then there
- 39:57Speaker 1: was these you know seasons where there is like hope
- 39:59Speaker 1: and then it just fell short. And then Brady comes
- 40:01Speaker 1: and you guys have this incredible ride. Have you had
- 40:04Speaker 1: a chance to do the thirty thousand foot you yet
- 40:06Speaker 1: and be able to look back with proper perspective on
- 40:09Speaker 1: what the Brady era was like in Tampa or is
- 40:11Speaker 1: it still too new or it's you're still in the
- 40:13Speaker 1: whirlwind of Okay, on to the next or do you
- 40:15Speaker 1: have a moment to like appreciate just how insane those
- 40:18Speaker 1: I guess what twenty four months, maybe even longer it
- 40:21Speaker 1: was with Tom Brady.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he was nuts. Really No, I haven't yet.
- 40:28Speaker 4: I mean there's been little moments, but you know, it was.
- 40:33Speaker 4: It was awesome for the entire fan base, for the city.
- 40:37Speaker 4: You know, we signed him. I kind of joked around
- 40:39Speaker 4: with a few of the people here at one time
- 40:42Speaker 4: that you know, real estate went up in Tampa and
- 40:46Speaker 4: the Brady effect, and I was wondering why we didn't
- 40:48Speaker 4: get a cut from that, you know, I mean, right, yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 4: so Ronnie got Ronnie Barber Dave the mayor here in Tampa.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Well we get some kind of day front. No, I'm kidding,
- 40:59Speaker 4: it's it was. It was phenomenal. But I will say
- 41:01Speaker 4: this was a big turning point obviously in the last
- 41:05Speaker 4: few decades of the Buccaneers is Brady. But I would
- 41:08Speaker 4: say it's gonna sound a little crazy. No offense to Brady.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to minimize the effect that
- 41:14Speaker 4: he had, but I think the total turning point, at
- 41:17Speaker 4: least in my tenure here was the day that I
- 41:19Speaker 4: hired Bruce.
- 41:21Speaker 1: So brusarians interesting. You know, that's a kind of a
- 41:24Speaker 1: take right now, and it's obviously not dismissing what Brady did,
- 41:26Speaker 1: but like Bruce changed the culture.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Also, he came in along with Todd and you know,
- 41:31Speaker 4: most of the staff, A lot of the stuff that
- 41:32Speaker 4: we still have here on coaching staff changed the culture.
- 41:37Speaker 4: And it was you know, I, you know all the
- 41:41Speaker 4: Although I did know Tom from my time in New England,
- 41:44Speaker 4: I was there when we drafted him. I wish I
- 41:46Speaker 4: could say I was the one that told Belichick to
- 41:48Speaker 4: draft him, but I didn't. But I knew him from
- 41:51Speaker 4: seven years that I spent with the Patriots organization. But
- 41:54Speaker 4: I don't still don't know if we would have gotten
- 41:56Speaker 4: him without Bruce.
- 41:57Speaker 1: So I think Bruce, what was the pitch? I mean,
- 42:00Speaker 1: I know we've probably told this story to others, but
- 42:02Speaker 1: I don't recall it ever being on I'm like, what
- 42:03Speaker 1: was the pitch from you and Bruce to Tom Brady,
- 42:05Speaker 1: who at the time we knew was leaving New England.
- 42:07Speaker 1: But I remember like an ESPN graphic of like fourteen
- 42:09Speaker 1: available suitors for time, and I don't think the Buccaneers
- 42:12Speaker 1: were number one on that list.
- 42:14Speaker 4: You know, it was Bruce such a way about him.
- 42:20Speaker 4: He's you know, he's just a Bruce is just such
- 42:23Speaker 4: a phenomenal leader. And we had a great team, We
- 42:28Speaker 4: had a great you know, Bass foundation, and it was
- 42:31Speaker 4: basically a half once you come down here. What better
- 42:35Speaker 4: place would her be to to win some games and
- 42:38Speaker 4: win the Super Bowl than Tampa. You know, I don't
- 42:41Speaker 4: know if that did it, but you know, probably would
- 42:43Speaker 4: have sold me.
- 42:44Speaker 1: It's and Bruce's you know, he's known as the quarterback Whisper.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Even long before he was in Tampa. He had a
- 42:49Speaker 1: book I think called Quarterback Whisper. And if you want
- 42:51Speaker 1: to go through the Bruce Arians lineage, it's from Peyton
- 42:54Speaker 1: Manning to Carson Palmer. Uh, you know, you name a
- 42:57Speaker 1: famous quarterback. They've had some experienced Roethlisberger with Bruce Arians,
- 43:02Speaker 1: what was what was his pitch? To Brady more, Hey,
- 43:05Speaker 1: I'm going to give you more ownership for this thing
- 43:06Speaker 1: where you're gonna have a chance to fly, or I'm
- 43:08Speaker 1: gonna take you even higher and bring you back to
- 43:10Speaker 1: where you were when you were winning those super Bowls
- 43:11Speaker 1: with the Patriots.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Well, no, I think he was always willing to give
- 43:15Speaker 4: him some some leeway to do some things the way
- 43:19Speaker 4: he wanted to do them now. But within within Bruce's
- 43:23Speaker 4: you know, realm of things that he likes to do things,
- 43:25Speaker 4: I think it was the perfect match matchup, to be
- 43:28Speaker 4: honest with you, where Tom was like very analytical in
- 43:32Speaker 4: terms of, you know, these are the passes that have
- 43:35Speaker 4: the best chance of having success, and you know we're
- 43:38Speaker 4: gonna keep it dialed in on these things, and Bruce's more, Okay,
- 43:41Speaker 4: let's go for it.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Let's go. We've got Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Throw
- 43:44Speaker 1: the ball, no.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Risk it, no biscuit the you know the play right
- 43:47Speaker 4: before half in the NFC Championship game.
- 43:49Speaker 1: You know, yes, Scottie Miller, let's go.
- 43:51Speaker 4: You know, without those kind of things, we wouldn't have
- 43:54Speaker 4: made it to the Super Bowl. But without Tom as well,
- 43:56Speaker 4: I think that was the perfect marriage. It was it
- 43:59Speaker 4: worked out? Well?
- 44:01Speaker 1: You go through that run enough. Sorry, I'm lingering on
- 44:03Speaker 1: twenty twenty. It's just such a such an amazing year.
- 44:05Speaker 1: And we'll move on after this. But there was the
- 44:08Speaker 1: wild card win, which was you know, big fine, and
- 44:13Speaker 1: then we go through the next few when you go
- 44:15Speaker 1: into New Orleans and then into Lambeau and then beat Mahomes.
- 44:19Speaker 1: When you look at those three games, you probably look
- 44:21Speaker 1: at them as one amazing experience, but which one was
- 44:24Speaker 1: the most rewarding? Because to go in New Orleans and
- 44:26Speaker 1: beat Shewan Peyton and Drew Brees had to feel pretty
- 44:28Speaker 1: good after they beat the crap at you in the
- 44:29Speaker 1: regular season, and then to go into Lambeau with Aaron
- 44:32Speaker 1: Rodgers and all the hype that he was getting as
- 44:34Speaker 1: an MVP. And then there's a Super Bowl, which is
- 44:36Speaker 1: like we freaking on the Super Bowl and we be
- 44:37Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. Which one to you do you smile the most?
- 44:40Speaker 1: Or maybe like at night when you're lying in bed,
- 44:42Speaker 1: you're like, you know what, that was pretty damn good.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I do want to let you
- 44:46Speaker 4: know we're not living in the past here. We've got
- 44:49Speaker 4: I know. But if you were to ask me, you
- 44:53Speaker 4: did ask me, I say, just because, and I mean,
- 44:57Speaker 4: this will all due respect to the Saints, I hate them, yeah,
- 45:01Speaker 4: you know, and they're just they're just they're just always
- 45:05Speaker 4: just such a off team and so good it's and
- 45:09Speaker 4: especially going there, it's such a tough place to win,
- 45:13Speaker 4: and they beat us twice that year, and we went
- 45:17Speaker 4: in and beat him, and I just kind of got
- 45:19Speaker 4: the sits that, you know that they I don't think
- 45:22Speaker 4: they were guaranteeing everybody that they were going to win,
- 45:25Speaker 4: but they just had a kind of a cockiness to me,
- 45:28Speaker 4: and then when they should they were a great team.
- 45:31Speaker 4: So when we beat them, and I remember walking off
- 45:33Speaker 4: the field and I pulled out my phone and I
- 45:35Speaker 4: just tweeted we that and I was like, maybe I
- 45:42Speaker 4: shouldn't have done that. But then all of a sudden,
- 45:44Speaker 4: I started getting all the alerts and I was like,
- 45:47Speaker 4: you know, this might come back to bite me.
- 45:48Speaker 1: But you didn't delete the tree.
- 45:50Speaker 4: I didn't delete it.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta be that way. All right, let's let's
- 45:55Speaker 1: talk about this team and the way you guys have
- 45:56Speaker 1: built this. Obviously I mentioned all the homegrown guys, but
- 45:59Speaker 1: one of the little things that you might not notice,
- 46:00Speaker 1: as if you were watching it, you guys have two
- 46:03Speaker 1: young draft picks in the last couple of years playing
- 46:05Speaker 1: at tackle, which is the hardest position to find. And
- 46:08Speaker 1: as Baker is doing this from an efficiency standpoint, you
- 46:11Speaker 1: notice he's not under dress at all moments. It seems
- 46:14Speaker 1: like this offensive line, even with the loss of Jensen
- 46:17Speaker 1: and the loss of Ally Marpett, they're anchored by those
- 46:20Speaker 1: two tackles, and you guys drafted both of them. Is
- 46:22Speaker 1: that a sense of pride for a guy like you
- 46:23Speaker 1: who builds the roster from the ground up.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is a sense of pride for all
- 46:27Speaker 4: of us that were involved in in you know, the
- 46:30Speaker 4: selection of those guys of Tristan and Luke and you know,
- 46:34Speaker 4: are we're very happy with our offensive line right now,
- 46:37Speaker 4: Cody Mack and Haines, he's doing a good job for us.
- 46:40Speaker 4: And then Filer, Matt who signed this year.
- 46:43Speaker 1: So but the anchor, Matt Filer, let's go for.
- 46:47Speaker 4: You know, Ryan unfortunately had the injury. He's not playing,
- 46:51Speaker 4: but he still is here every day. He's in all
- 46:54Speaker 4: the meetings. And if that, if that old line room
- 46:58Speaker 4: is good and cohesive and and loose and having a
- 47:02Speaker 4: good time, then the whole organization seems to be running well.
- 47:05Speaker 4: So it's awesome to have Ryan in there because he's
- 47:09Speaker 4: rubbing off. He understands what's that. You have to have
- 47:13Speaker 4: a tone setter, and you know, he and I had
- 47:15Speaker 4: this conversation a couple weeks ago practice, like, you don't
- 47:19Speaker 4: want the tone setter to be the quarterback, you know
- 47:21Speaker 4: when I'm talking about in terms of setting the tone
- 47:25Speaker 4: bashing people on the field because you don't want him
- 47:27Speaker 4: to get hurt, although Baker has been doing that, so
- 47:31Speaker 4: but you want it to be a running back. You
- 47:32Speaker 4: want to be receiver, of tight end or an offensive lineman.
- 47:35Speaker 4: And we're starting to see that. You've saw Luke Gadecki
- 47:38Speaker 4: this weekend. You know, oh my god, pinning up player,
- 47:41Speaker 4: laying on him and just that intensity, and Cody Mauk
- 47:45Speaker 4: has that in him and it's it's it makes it.
- 47:48Speaker 4: Everybody thrives off of that.
- 47:49Speaker 1: So we still defend.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Ryan Jensen is still infusing his his his prickness into
- 47:55Speaker 4: the offensive line.
- 47:56Speaker 1: Prickness. I like that, and you feel his presence at
- 47:59Speaker 1: the way they're playing. And then if you look at
- 48:00Speaker 1: the defensive line, and this is very inside Buccaneers. I
- 48:04Speaker 1: know if you're listening and you're like, okay, I mean
- 48:06Speaker 1: that defensive line is playing as well as anybody ELSEO.
- 48:09Speaker 4: Yeah, there they've been. We we have a great group
- 48:14Speaker 4: there too, and a great rotation and get some new
- 48:16Speaker 4: players since you're great Gains being one of them, and
- 48:18Speaker 4: he's done a great job. And uh so we've got
- 48:21Speaker 4: we're pretty deep there, especially at outside linebacker, and we've
- 48:24Speaker 4: got a nice little rotation going there and Vita's playing well.
- 48:27Speaker 4: And so we'll get our first round pick coming back
- 48:30Speaker 4: here soon, so that'll be exciting.
- 48:32Speaker 1: You know. The the NFL network has our show Good
- 48:34Speaker 1: Morning Football in the morning, and Jason mccordy does a
- 48:37Speaker 1: list every week of the best defensive backs in football,
- 48:41Speaker 1: and I think now twice a in Week one when
- 48:43Speaker 1: you guys went into Minnesota and he made the big play,
- 48:45Speaker 1: and then second was this week in New Orleans making
- 48:48Speaker 1: the huge fumble, you know, claus fumble. In this one.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Antoine Winfield's playing out of his mind. You drafted him
- 48:54Speaker 1: in the second round and he has often said he
- 48:56Speaker 1: believed he was a first round pick and he slipped.
- 48:58Speaker 1: What did you see from him coming out of college
- 49:00Speaker 1: and what do you see from him now playing in
- 49:03Speaker 1: this pivotal year for him.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Well, we saw a really intense, athletic, smart player in
- 49:10Speaker 4: college Nicolauld play safety, do a lot of different things,
- 49:14Speaker 4: and then you saw a lot of his dad and him,
- 49:16Speaker 4: you know, very intense player, great tackle. I think he's
- 49:19Speaker 4: one of the better tacklers maybe in the you know,
- 49:23Speaker 4: I don't want to throw out the history of the
- 49:25Speaker 4: NFL at from that position, from that position, just just
- 49:30Speaker 4: so reliable, just super super super reliable, great guy too,
- 49:35Speaker 4: So very fortunate we have him.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Okay, so we've done the football. Now we have to
- 49:41Speaker 1: go off the field a little bit. Everyone's talking about
- 49:44Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. I know you are a father of three. Correct,
- 49:50Speaker 1: did did Taylor swift sensation hit your home before there
- 49:53Speaker 1: was a crossover with Travis Kelsey or were you already
- 49:56Speaker 1: affected by Taylor Swift this summer when she took over
- 49:59Speaker 1: America for every person ages ten to twenty and maybe
- 50:03Speaker 1: now beyond that, I think it's stretchedway beyond that. Have
- 50:06Speaker 1: you been swifty? Were you a swifty? Did you know
- 50:08Speaker 1: of Swift before she took the league by storm?
- 50:11Speaker 4: So she played here in Tampa and I have a uh,
- 50:17Speaker 4: you know, my wife has a suite to the games, now,
- 50:21Speaker 4: I guess. And so with that suite, you're going to
- 50:24Speaker 4: use it for anything that's at Raymond James.
- 50:27Speaker 1: And is it year round? I don't. I don't know
- 50:29Speaker 1: this stuff. This is stuff that we do.
- 50:30Speaker 4: We do.
- 50:31Speaker 1: It's your owner.
- 50:32Speaker 4: Owners are very very very good to us. So and
- 50:37Speaker 4: so she had three nights and I didn't. I didn't
- 50:40Speaker 4: get to go to one. And it was packed twenty
- 50:44Speaker 4: people in it every night. I joke around, I could
- 50:47Speaker 4: have made millions of dollars selling that sweet. I would
- 50:50Speaker 4: have gotten fired for doing that. But but so we
- 50:54Speaker 4: had people from all over the country coming.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Uh, you know, friends, family are like just people knew
- 50:59Speaker 1: that the Lights have a sweet and.
- 51:01Speaker 4: Their family all Blair's friends and you know our my friends,
- 51:04Speaker 4: my family and and my daughter and Blair went all
- 51:09Speaker 4: three nights I think. And anyway, so yes, it's Taylor
- 51:13Speaker 4: Swift has been talked about in our family for quite
- 51:15Speaker 4: a while. So but recently when before the you know,
- 51:21Speaker 4: it came out that Kelsey, there was the rumors.
- 51:23Speaker 1: We don't know what they are, whatever it is, Well,
- 51:25Speaker 1: there was rumors.
- 51:26Speaker 4: For a little while before she showed up at the
- 51:28Speaker 4: at the first game there last week. I asked my daughter,
- 51:32Speaker 4: I said, hey, did you hear that you know, Taylor
- 51:34Speaker 4: Swift and Travis Kelsey might be a thing. And she said, Dad,
- 51:37Speaker 4: stay out of her private life. Would you want someone
- 51:42Speaker 4: talking about your private life?
- 51:44Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, how old is your daughter?
- 51:47Speaker 1: What's her name?
- 51:47Speaker 4: And how old is she? Zoe? She's Twelve's just defending
- 51:52Speaker 4: Taylor Swift to the end of the day. So I said, well,
- 51:55Speaker 4: I think you and your friends would talk about you
- 51:57Speaker 4: because that's different. That's different.
- 51:59Speaker 1: That's dad. That is so good. Twelve years old, number
- 52:04Speaker 1: one story everywhere. NBC shot to it ten times. That's
- 52:07Speaker 1: not an exaggeration. But Zoe is defending the private life
- 52:10Speaker 1: of Taylor Swift and Dad, why don't you back off?
- 52:13Speaker 4: So hey, I know better now we're not talking about
- 52:16Speaker 4: our private life.
- 52:17Speaker 1: I love that. So good your career. We've done the
- 52:22Speaker 1: story time with you on Good Morning Football. But for
- 52:24Speaker 1: the listeners of this podcast, you said you mentioned seven
- 52:27Speaker 1: years with the Patriots. Who are some of the colleagues
- 52:30Speaker 1: you had. If you were to look around the league
- 52:32Speaker 1: now and say, well, this guy's there, this guy's there,
- 52:34Speaker 1: obviously Belichick is at the top of that that family tree.
- 52:38Speaker 1: But when you look around and it doesn't have to
- 52:40Speaker 1: be current guys, could be former guys too. Who are
- 52:42Speaker 1: some of the people that you were rubbing elbows with
- 52:45Speaker 1: and you know, grunting it out as a as a
- 52:47Speaker 1: scout at the lowest level than moving your way up
- 52:49Speaker 1: at that Patriots Franchise's.
- 52:51Speaker 4: There's a lot, you know, at the Patriots, we had
- 52:56Speaker 4: the scouting assistant was could have been anything.
- 53:00Speaker 1: That that track Coot did the job in tail just.
- 53:04Speaker 4: Getting coffee and making copies, you know, the whole thing.
- 53:08Speaker 4: And I wasn't a scouting assistant there. I started off
- 53:12Speaker 4: with the Dolphins as a scout assistant. By the time
- 53:14Speaker 4: I got to the Patriots, I was an area of scout.
- 53:15Speaker 4: But we would still work together closely with the scouting assistants.
- 53:19Speaker 4: You had Josh McDaniels who went on to become you know,
- 53:22Speaker 4: obviously he's the head coach of the Raiders right now,
- 53:24Speaker 4: Nick Cassario, who is now you know, GM of the Texans.
- 53:29Speaker 4: We had Matt Russell there. I mean I could go
- 53:32Speaker 4: on and on. There's Mike Disner was a scouting assistant
- 53:35Speaker 4: now the CEO running the Lions, running the Lions. So
- 53:39Speaker 4: and then I was fortunate to work for the Eagles
- 53:41Speaker 4: where we had you know, worked alongside Howie Roseman and
- 53:44Speaker 4: Ryan Grigson, and I mean we had there's quite a
- 53:48Speaker 4: few very talented young people at that time.
- 53:52Speaker 1: And and the Belichick relationship obviously was was strong, and
- 53:56Speaker 1: you went on did your thing in Arizona, then eventually
- 53:59Speaker 1: got to the Buccaneers as the GM Belichick as you
- 54:03Speaker 1: look at the history of the game, obviously as dude
- 54:05Speaker 1: as one of the greatest head coaches of all time.
- 54:08Speaker 1: In recent weeks, people are kind of knocked some of
- 54:10Speaker 1: the player personnels, but when you were on the player
- 54:13Speaker 1: personnel side, Belichick was pretty much a savant with that
- 54:16Speaker 1: stuff too, right.
- 54:16Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I've learned so much from him. He's He's incredible.
- 54:20Speaker 4: It's I wish people, I mean, they have an idea
- 54:23Speaker 4: that he's pretty damn good. I mean, he is best
- 54:27Speaker 4: of all time. But if they were inside the walls
- 54:30Speaker 4: there on a for as long as a lot of
- 54:32Speaker 4: us have worked with them, it would it would blow
- 54:34Speaker 4: their mind just the detail that he has just with
- 54:38Speaker 4: everything that he does.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Was there a particular story or memory you have if
- 54:42Speaker 1: you're at a family event or you're at a dinner
- 54:44Speaker 1: and someone says, give me a good Belichick story, what's
- 54:46Speaker 1: the one you go to?
- 54:47Speaker 4: You know, I was just actually talking about this with
- 54:50Speaker 4: with my wife. So one time. You have a lot
- 54:54Speaker 4: of conversations with Bill when you work with him, but
- 54:56Speaker 4: there's those one personal ones that you remember. And had
- 55:01Speaker 4: me in his office. It was at the time I
- 55:03Speaker 4: was interviewing with the Bears to be the general manager.
- 55:07Speaker 4: This is twenty eleven. So I was going in to
- 55:09Speaker 4: be for an interview and he was talking to me,
- 55:12Speaker 4: kind of prepping me a little bit, and he said,
- 55:14Speaker 4: you know, when you get a general manager's job at
- 55:17Speaker 4: some point, which you will, you're gonna think you haven't
- 55:20Speaker 4: made You think you're making a lot of money, and
- 55:23Speaker 4: you're set, he could. But then all of a sudden,
- 55:26Speaker 4: you're gonna get a call from your wife that she
- 55:28Speaker 4: needs new window treatments, and you don't realize how much
- 55:32Speaker 4: window treatments cost. Okay, and then so the money isn't
- 55:36Speaker 4: it's not as big as you expect it to be
- 55:39Speaker 4: because everything that everything else goes up too. And then
- 55:43Speaker 4: we get the job here in Tampa and we get
- 55:46Speaker 4: our house and then I get a text from my wife, Hey,
- 55:49Speaker 4: you're going to see something go through the American Express.
- 55:52Speaker 4: I got window treatments.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Work for the example is exactly exactly what happened. Yeah,
- 56:00Speaker 1: that is so good. I love that. What about the
- 56:02Speaker 1: same for Brady? Someone says, give me your best Brady story.
- 56:05Speaker 1: Is it you was at the parade him throwing a
- 56:07Speaker 1: Lombardi or is there a story that we might not know?
- 56:10Speaker 4: Well, so the whole time. The day that we signed him,
- 56:14Speaker 4: I called him and said, because we're not COVID so
- 56:17Speaker 4: we couldn't have him here. But I said, hey, there's
- 56:19Speaker 4: one thing I need you to that you don't know
- 56:21Speaker 4: about me. Is I'm a better beer chugger than you are.
- 56:25Speaker 4: I'm totally out. Ever since I was a young age,
- 56:28Speaker 4: can chuck a beer. I can check a beer beer.
- 56:32Speaker 4: Never met somebody that could chuck one faster? And he
- 56:34Speaker 4: goes no, he said, no, I got you. I swear
- 56:37Speaker 4: to God, I'm better than you. He said, all right,
- 56:39Speaker 4: if we win the Super Bowl, let's have a chug off.
- 56:41Speaker 4: So we were gonna have this whole thing. It was
- 56:44Speaker 4: gonna be sponsored by a beer, certain sponsor and all
- 56:47Speaker 4: that stuff. And he backed out. He backed out, and
- 56:50Speaker 4: I said, he goes, well, I was afraid to lose it.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Yes, he doesn't want to lose.
- 56:55Speaker 4: He didn't want to lose Tom Brady.
- 56:58Speaker 1: So we'll give you the win there with the technicality
- 57:00Speaker 1: that it never happened. Okay, that's fine. I texted you
- 57:04Speaker 1: a lot, and it's never really about the football stuff
- 57:07Speaker 1: so much. It's more just about family and how everything's going.
- 57:09Speaker 1: And I've known you for a long time. I also
- 57:12Speaker 1: know you are very very particular on game day. Players
- 57:17Speaker 1: of course, lay out their clothes, what they're gonna wear,
- 57:19Speaker 1: they do a prayer, they do their own pre game retation.
- 57:22Speaker 1: A general manager on game day, you have your superstitions.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Can you share with the listeners and the viewers at
- 57:28Speaker 1: home the Jason like game day experience?
- 57:30Speaker 4: Now, they're stupid, they're stupid. First of all, I know superstitions.
- 57:34Speaker 4: They're stupid. It's uh. But you know, I have a
- 57:38Speaker 4: certain pair of shoes that kind of have to wear
- 57:40Speaker 4: that like this. These parents had something to do with
- 57:43Speaker 4: that last win. You know, it's just stupid, nort It's
- 57:52Speaker 4: gotta be a new pair every year. You kind of
- 57:54Speaker 4: retire the other ones. Yeah, and then so when we're
- 57:59Speaker 4: when I pull so when I come to the game,
- 58:01Speaker 4: they have a spot for the head coach, the general
- 58:02Speaker 4: manager and all the owners under the stadium. And I
- 58:05Speaker 4: can't have a dirty car under the stadium because people
- 58:08Speaker 4: are walking by it. So I have to go to
- 58:09Speaker 4: a certain car wash on the way. Then I have
- 58:13Speaker 4: to stop at the wah wah and you know what
- 58:15Speaker 4: a wa Tampa floor several wah wahs.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Now, really, I thought that was just a Philly thing.
- 58:20Speaker 4: No, there's there's one here. I have to get a
- 58:22Speaker 4: certain I have to get a diet of half and
- 58:25Speaker 4: half iced tea, lemonade, and I have to have this
- 58:30Speaker 4: eggs this sizzley sandwich, I mean, and then it's like
- 58:34Speaker 4: goes on and on. So it's I have a lot
- 58:36Speaker 4: of go on.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I thought, more. Okay, so you go from the shoes
- 58:40Speaker 1: to the car. Then when you when you get to
- 58:42Speaker 1: the stadium, what's the routine? Like, I do you do
- 58:45Speaker 1: one lap? Do you listen to a certain song? Like
- 58:47Speaker 1: where are we at?
- 58:47Speaker 5: I do?
- 58:48Speaker 4: I go through lap, through the locker room, Then I
- 58:50Speaker 4: go sit in my wife's sweep for a little bit
- 58:52Speaker 4: and watch the pregame show. And then I go back
- 58:54Speaker 4: down to the field and do the whole thing. But
- 58:56Speaker 4: the biggest one I've left out I've omitted here is
- 58:59Speaker 4: the week of the game. I have to at least
- 59:02Speaker 4: one night on the way home, stop at this dive
- 59:05Speaker 4: bar it's called the press box, and I have to
- 59:08Speaker 4: play one round of golden tea golf, just with let's
- 59:13Speaker 4: go with with a few of my buddies that are
- 59:15Speaker 4: always in there, and I have to play one round
- 59:18Speaker 4: of golden tea golf. Otherwise the whole week goes to
- 59:21Speaker 4: So that's.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Do you have the high score you?
- 59:24Speaker 4: Oh no, I'm constantly trying. I have won one week,
- 59:27Speaker 4: that was it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:30Speaker 1: So it's called the press box. And if you're a
- 59:33Speaker 1: Buccaneers fan looking to kind of bend the ear of
- 59:35Speaker 1: the general manager, your best bet is to just go
- 59:38Speaker 1: to the press box Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. You're
- 59:41Speaker 1: one in five chance you're going to see Jason Knight.
- 59:44Speaker 4: It's not long either. It won't be long. It's just
- 59:46Speaker 4: one round of golden tea.
- 59:48Speaker 1: One round gold Are the wings good at the press phenomenal? Phenomenal,
- 59:51Speaker 1: phenomen what a commercial?
- 59:53Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I won't get anything there though, by the way,
- 59:57Speaker 4: I've mentioned this before, Walter the owner has never given
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: me a free beer.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: And I assume you're keeping the press box open with
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: that frequency before we close. It's so early, it's like
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: it's early bye week. It kind of started off the
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: podcast with it, but like it is one of the
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: stories of the league that here the Bucks are this
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: team that some people peg to be in a total
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: rebuild and yet top of the division, feeling good, relatively healthy.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: What's the state of the nation here as we head
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: towards the buy and you get one of these brief
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: weekends off and then you hit the road and you
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: guys have to get back in business. You're wearing the
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: creamsicles obviously when you first play the Lions when you
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: get back, which is so cool. But then it's a
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: long stretch and it's a long season. But can you
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: take a moment to just enjoy this thing?
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: I mean, I'd be lying if I said no. Yeah,
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: of course, and I mean there's nothing better and going
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: into a buy after you won, so yeah, I got
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: to be honest with you usually have the twenty four
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: hour rule, but if you're going to the bye week,
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: you can have a few extra days, so it's but
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: it's one game at a time. After this, I mean,
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: we haven't won anything yet, so it's but feeling good
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: about where we're at. Feel like we're going to be
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: pretty healthy coming out.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Can I tell you something. When I was a kid,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: my dad and I used to do this cool tradition
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: where like every football season, I was allowed to buy
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: a new jersey. And this is back in the eighties
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: and the nineties where it wasn't like you just go
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: on fanatics dot Com and pick any player and you could.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: It would be a thing you'd have to go in
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: our mall. It was a place called going to the Game,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: and it was like a you know, like a Champs
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: or one of these stores. It was the Freehold Raceway Mall, Freehold,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: New Jersey, and it was the ninety seven season, I
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: want to say, maybe ninety sixties, and it was the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: year where Warren Sap and Derek Brooks were both drafted,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: so I might be even it might be man longer
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: for that. And in going to the game, they had
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: a creamsicle You're gonna love this player creamsicle Hardy Nickerson jersey.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And I bought that jersey as my jersey
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: that year, and I would wear that to school every Monday,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: even though the Buccaneers were not great that season. And
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: this is before they went to the Pewter and you
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: had this like slick cool jersey and the creamsicle was
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: the jersey and I would get mocked for it because
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: the Bucks weren't great, But I love that gle you
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: guys warm. When Josh Freeman was the quarterback for a
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: couple of Coffee there, I remember they had the they
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: would do the throwbacks, it's coming back. Does the creamsicle
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: jersey mean anything to you as it predated your time?
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: And do you realize like what nostalgia comes along with
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: that creamsicle jersey and that logo of the pirate with
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: the with the eye patch and the whole deal creamsicles?
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Am I making too big of a deal here going
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: down memory?
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: L No, not at all? Are you kidding me? This
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: is uh, we've been looking forward to this forever. I mean,
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: we've got creamsicle stuff coming out of our ears at
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: our house right now, and it's uh is that right? Oh? Yeah? Everybody?
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: What's the what's the play? Because like Doug Williams was
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: wearing the Creamsicles in seventy nine and Leroy Salmon. But like,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: who's the player when you think of the Creamsicle Bucks,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: who's the player.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: That you think? Yeah? So, I mean, yeah, here we go.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: It's yeah, it's it's super exciting. It's gonna be a
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: lot of fun. It's gonna be it's gonna be awesome.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Okay, too much for me. I think I want to
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: go down like Eric Rhett and start talking about all
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: these guys and Trent Dilferd. But you're not looking to
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: We're living in the current, Peter, not in the past.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: That's it. I might want a Vita Vea throwback I got.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I might need a Vitavea creamsicle and rocking on Good
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Morning Football. Who can I talk to at the Bucks
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: to get one of those mates? Do you have any
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: hookups or no? Is Walter at the bar able to
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: hook me up? I don't.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: We'll see what we can do here.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Walter at the press box and I are gonna be
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: the only two Vita Vea Creamsicle jersey. Whereas, uh, Jason Light,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: I have taken way too much of your time during
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the season. A general manager, what you guys have built
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: as a collective in that front office is nothing short
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: of incredible. The Buccaneers are one of the most consistent
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: teams in the NFL, and you guys just churn out
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: draft picks that are playing on Sundays with very few
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: bus and very few failures. I appreciate your time, dude.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Good luck the rest of the way.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Have fun as always, Now we will, Thanks dude. That's
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Jason Light. Tambay Buccaneers their bye week and they come
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: back there we're in creamsicles playing the Lions. Thanks Jason.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I love Jason Light. I mean, that's a great inview.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: That's what we want to do with this podcast. We
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: want to get an opportunity to speak to the guys
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: who make the decisions and when you could tell stories
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: about Belichick, Brady right up to Baker Mayfield. But also
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: ten years is the gm is. A lot of these
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: guys have two years, three years to do it. They
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: probably get two quarterbacks. This is a guy who you know,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: went from Jamis to the Brady to now Baker Mayfield
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: and they're winning. So Aaron, I love that stuff.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I also don't feel like I get a ton
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: of You don't often hear a GM just flat out
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: say God, I hate the Saints, and so that was
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: the most important win to me, was beating the Saints.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: How candid it was great. There was something to that
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: interview where I felt like, you know, Bye Week is
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: a little different than if you start off. I mean,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: we got them at the perfect time. Yeah, yeah, three
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: and one. Bye Week is like if you're in a circle,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: like an in season GM guest, that's it. I doubt
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: we'll get many others because these guys are so tight
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: lipped and such on eggshells for week to week. But
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I knew this was the sweet spot, so we got
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Jason Knight. I started the podcast talking about my amazing Sunday,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: but I have to close the loop on something we
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: mentioned last week. I was invited as a special guest
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: to a Broadway show last Thursday night, and Aaron, as
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: my fellow fan of the Great White Way, my fellow
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Thespian supporter, I went. I brought my lovely wife, Erica,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: and we went to the Melissa Etheridge one woman show
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: titled My Window. It premiered Thursday night. It is in
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: the middle of Times Square and my review is thus
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: it was awesome. I loved it. Basically Melissa, whose life
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: I don't really know all the details too. She's a
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: fan of the Chiefs. She's been on Good Morning Football
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: about a dozen times. She sends me a direct message says,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: I have a Broadway show coming out. I knew she
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: was off Broadway for a little bit telling my life story.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Do you and your wife want to come? I said yes,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: and I will be honest. Thursday night football, well, ninety
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: nine percent of the country was watching the first half
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: of Alliance Packers wand I was busy singing I'm the
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: only one. Yeah, I mean it was amazing. So Etherge
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: comes out and this is my recommendation to anybody coming
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: through New York City or they have it. It's a
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: rock concert, but it's also like her personal story, and
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: it tells the story. She's a small town girl from
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: a small town in Kansas and her only dream ever
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: was to play guitar and be in a rock band.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: And back then when she was born in the sixties,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: that was not common for a female to do that.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: By the age of twelve, Melissa was playing in dive
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: bars and parts of bands with thirty and forty year olds,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: she was this phenom on the guitar. She comes out
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: of the closet and her mother says she can't agree
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: with that decision, and that severs or really hampers her
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: relationship with her mother. But her father, who has a
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: ton of grace, says, I've got your back no matter
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: what you just as long as you're happy. She moves
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: to Los Angeles, where she chases this dream to be
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: a rock star, which she says, it's the same dream
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: that ten thousand other people who moved to Los Angeles has,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: And sure enough she ends up playing bars and gets
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: one gig after another to finally be able to perform
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: as an act. And she falls in love with a
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: very famous Hollywood actor. You can google this. She doesn't
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: mention it in the show. Of Course, I did a
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: very famous Hollywood actor's wife, and they have this torrid romance.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: And this woman leaves a very famous Hollywood actor for
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Melissa Etheridge, and they live in the Hollywood Hills together
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: and they start this life together, and then sure enough
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: soon comes great stardom, and she has this really poignant
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: moment where she's like, all I ever wanted to be
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: was rich and famous, and then once I got to
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: that point, I realized that meant nothing, and that fame
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: and that wealth and all that stuff was pretty hollow
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: and empty. And I'm on the road three hundred days
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: out of the year, and I'm doing European tours and
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I'm away from my kids. Like she sings songs throughout Aaron,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: this is not Broadway dot Com, this is not theater mania,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: but my review is a very solid should go see
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: on the Melissa Ethrid Show. I wouldn't say you need
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to fly in for it tomorrow. This isn't gonna be
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: the craze that is Hamilton. I'm not gonna say that
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you must, you know, see it the first week. But
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: if you want to laugh, cry, dance a little bit
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: and you know, hear some great music and then just
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: see it and just a wonderful performance from Melissa, I
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: would advise going to see my Window on Broadway. Your
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: thoughts on my you know, Hollywood slash Broadway.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Review, I think you probably could have delivered it a
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: little better. I think, you know, maybe a little better
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: lighting next time you do it. Yeah, no, no, I
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: think I love the theater as well. My parents both
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: from the theater, and I also love that there has
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: been this influx with Broadway with these kind of they're
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: not just the jukebox musical. It's the artist doing the song.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: So it's not just come see us do a bunch
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: of Michael Jackson songs, which I'm sure is in I
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: haven't seen.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Apparently that show is awesome.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I haven't seen it.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: But you want to get the football link to this.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: The GM of the Seahawks, John Schneider, is a friend
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: and he texted me on Thursday that his wife, Tracy's
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: in town. He's like, what's a good restaurant in the
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: theater district? She's seeing the MJ Show, And sure enough,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: we want to do two reviews. I want to she
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: freaking loved it and the MJ Show, which is a
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: story about Michael Jackson but obviously it's not him singing
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: no Longer with Us, but it's the Michael Jackson story
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: through that. But apparently that's awesome and worth seeing. But
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: what's the other one? Merrily, and there's another one, Mellowy Roll,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: which is supposed to be great again Broadway reviews on
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: a football podcast. But Melissa Etherich, are you a fan
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: of the music, Like I only knew three or four songs,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: and that's one an insult to meliss I knew come
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: to my window. I knew I'm the only one, and
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: I knew what are the beginning songs were?
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: I mean, those are the two I know. Like, for
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: whatever reason, I think she was not something that my
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: dad played as much. Like there he was a Bonnie
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: Raid guy. So I have a lot of Bonnie Raid
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: stuff in my child.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Let's give them something to talk about. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: she was great. So here's this awkward moment for me again. Me, me, Me,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: this is becoming like a diary. I apologize. I got
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: there on time with my wife. It's pouring rain out
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: of the will call. It's Thursday night, I mean torrential rain.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: We go to the will call. The woman at the
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: will calls like, I don't if your tickets. I'm like,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: my wife got all dressed up. We came to the theater.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: I'm like, damn, all right, let's leave. And then she's like, well,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: it's your name. I'm like it's Peter Shugger. She's like,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: we don't have you. I'm like, all right, great, I've
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: gone like sheepishly gonna go back on the two train
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: back to Brooklyn, like literally like just embarrassed, mortified that
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: this happened. And then out of nowhere, someone's like, wait,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: are you with the press? I'm like, kind of, I'm
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: not covering it, like I don't I don't work for Playbill,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: but like, yes I am, I'm with the press.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Peter Schrager of Broadway World dot com.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Broadway World dot com, here's my request to all the
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: listeners and to you guys. Go to a site called
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: theatermania dot com. Theatermania dot com click on the Melissa
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: Ethridge Show. Are you doing it right now? Aaron? What
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I didn't realize was yes, I'm with the press, but
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I was an invited guest. I don't know what was
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: going on in this situation, like I blacked out, but
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: I wasn't supposed to be all doing this, Aaron. They
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: asked me to walk the red carpet, and I said, yes,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Can you go through the list you have it up
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: yet the red carpet pictures. Can you go through the
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: lists of the names, some of the bigger ones for
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: and then the last picture and what this person is
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: wearing first? Give it the who hosted the Tonys this year.
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: Do you know the name of the person who hosted
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: the Tonys?
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Guess who was the on that red carpet? From Melissa
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Sophia Bush? Is there Bush? Gina Gershawn, who I grew
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: up obviously loving for her many roles. Who else? Wait?
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: Who is this in a white tea and a blue
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: button down? Peter Schrager right there?
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: You should have seen the confused looks of who the
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: fuck is this guy? From the theater Press. My wife
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: was like, I'm not walking Please, come on me, please,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: I'm not walking that. We just got done. We got umbrella.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I got an umbrella in my hands. It's so ray.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I'm wearing Honestly, I'm wearing a pair of jeans called Goodfellow,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: which is the jeans you get at Target, but for
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: my size, they're the most comfortable. So I've got Good
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Fellow jeans, a white T shirt and it ain't a
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: James Person T shirt. We're talking like old navy white
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: T shirt and a blue button down from j Crew
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: that is open button down. And I walked the red carpet,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: and sure enough, the next day I'm tagged in a
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: million Broadway articles that I walked the red carpet. But
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: like I always say, it's not about me, not about
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: me at all.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: I mean, you look good. You got a really good smile,
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: and I would never have guessed that you had. Five
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: minutes before this been turned away at the ticket counter,
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: turned it away and told that you did not have
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: a ticket.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: This is New York City in a nutshell. If you
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: can make it here, you can make it anywhere. I
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: walk off the subway, I'm getting drenched. I got splashed
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: by a taxi. I'm soaking wet. My wife is furious.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: That she's not furious, but my wife is a little
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: confused that we don't have tickets. After we lugged out
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: in this rainy day and we left our son and
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: our six month old daughter to go see this show.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: And then within a flash, I'm on the red carpet
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: with Ariannadbos, who was the star of West Side Story
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: and who hosted the Tony's Life Can Happen That fast?
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: Aaron, Yeah, a pair of good New York stories today.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: I like that a lot.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: We got it from Jeremy Strong to JB. Smooth to
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Ariana Debos, and I barely even mentioned the name Taylor
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Swift Aaron. Thank you to you, the viewers and the listeners.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Thank you. We're having fun doing this on behalf of
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: Jason English, who is here with iHeart Jason Kleinman, who
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: works on the amazing social clips and the digital stuff,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: the folks out west, the people here. Thanks to everybody
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: for listening to the Season with Peter Schrager and of
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: course our guests Jason Light Till next week. Let's hope
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: it's jbsmooth, but I wouldn't bank on it these things.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: If you don't press save on the screen grab of
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the QR Code company business card from the manager, you
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: don't get a chance to have the guests on the
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the NFL
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: and partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit
