- 0:02Happy Tuesday morning everybody. Well, we have two subjects
- 0:08today. One is history and the other one
- 0:10is happening right now. Let's go with history first.
- 0:15Yesterday on Monday on X, somebody posted about a one
- 0:20minute video of A the pre race show that we used to have in
- 0:27NASCAR on SPEED TV. Do you all remember the
- 0:30legendary Speed TV? One of the most famous racing
- 0:34channels in all of Motorsports, actually probably the most
- 0:39famous racing channel of all time.
- 0:42It was called SPEED, and SPEED had racing on all the time.
- 0:47But the show that I was involved in had the second highest
- 0:52ratings of all of Motorsports. The only thing bigger was the
- 0:56NASCAR Cup race itself. Our ratings on that show were
- 1:02higher than the Xfinity Series, higher than IndyCar, higher than
- 1:07Formula One, and the name of the show was NASCAR Race Day fueled
- 1:14by Sunoco. And man, it was stratosphere.
- 1:20It means it was in, it was, it was so big.
- 1:23It was so big. And so yesterday on Monday, on
- 1:27January 6th, that man posted the video, probably one of the
- 1:31greatest videos of all time. If you were going to advertise
- 1:34that show, it was at Daytona before the Daytona 500 and the
- 1:39crowd was at least 5000 people. So after this video got posted,
- 1:47handful of people started saying what happened to that show.
- 1:50What happened to that show? Well, there are a lot of you
- 1:53that know what happened to the show.
- 1:55But as brother Rusty says, Herman, you have to remind
- 2:00people they remember what they want to.
- 2:04So all I'm doing on coffee with Kenny's reminding everybody what
- 2:08happened. What happened to NASCAR race day
- 2:10fueled by Snokel? If it was making so much money
- 2:14and and it was so big and the ratings were so big, what
- 2:17happened to it? I'm going to tell you exactly
- 2:19what happened to it and it's not even my opinion.
- 2:24The president of Fox Sports walked up to me at Daytona, Eric
- 2:29Shanks. So you know the Herman ID
- 2:32bullshit, everything. This is the truth.
- 2:36What happened to that pre race show NASCAR Race Day fueled by
- 2:40Sunoco? Eric Shanks, the president
- 2:44walked right up to me and he was very sad and he said Kenny with
- 2:50his head down and very serious tone.
- 2:53He said I'm sorry, I did not want to get rid of NASCAR Race
- 2:58Day, but we had to because we're starting the new FS1.
- 3:08So I said, I understand, you know it.
- 3:12Listen, I'm a race car driver and I always went around the TV
- 3:16compound. Everybody would say, gosh,
- 3:18you're so good on TV, Kenny. And, and I didn't want to be
- 3:22good on TVI did not want to be good on TVI wanted to be known
- 3:27as a race car driver because I love racing.
- 3:31I love racing cars. So it bothered me when people
- 3:34told me how good I was on TV. I wanted to be talked about as a
- 3:38race car driver. So it didn't bother me that
- 3:40much. So the reason NASCAR race day
- 3:46fueled by Sunoco was shut down, Well, another reason was this.
- 3:51It cost $800,000 per show to operate it.
- 3:56So it you say why did it cost that much money?
- 3:59Well, satellite time is not expensive.
- 4:02Back in those days, we had big stages, we had big, big screen
- 4:08TV set up outside a lot of employees, and when you put it
- 4:13all together, it just costs a lot of money.
- 4:15They had a bus right next there and hell, I would fly in on late
- 4:21set. I was running the Xfinity
- 4:23Series. I'd be in Kentucky and I'd fly
- 4:27with Kevin Harvick. Kevin Harvick, Delana, myself,
- 4:30We'd fly from Kentucky on a Saturday night Xfinity race, and
- 4:37we go through the tunnel at 2:00 in the morning.
- 4:40But I would sleep in that Speed TV bus.
- 4:43I'd get up Sunday mornings, look out, and all the fans would be
- 4:46out there at 6:00 in the morning.
- 4:48So that's what happened to the show during that time.
- 4:53Everybody had to have a sports channel.
- 4:56So Fox, the network, they wanted to have a sports channel.
- 5:01I thought they did. I thought Speed was good enough.
- 5:04But they what they wanted, they wanted an all sports channel.
- 5:07Speed was just racing. So Speed TV was just racing.
- 5:14So they wanted to they wanted to battle CBSNBC and all those TV
- 5:21channels. They ended up with their own
- 5:22sports networks, you know, So, so anyway, that's what happened
- 5:27and that's right from the horse's mouth, Eric Shanks said.
- 5:30Kenny, I'm so sorry, you know, and because there's no doubt,
- 5:35it's like, God, how do you kill the biggest free race show?
- 5:39And that's how they did it. They killed it because they
- 5:41wanted to start a new network, Fox Sports 1.
- 5:48All right, everybody, I hope that gives you a lot of the
- 5:49details. Let's take a drink of coffee and
- 5:53then bring up the other subject. OK, so you know, we just got
- 6:03back from the Tulsa shootout. Well, I did not get back from
- 6:07the Tulsa shootout, but the Tulsa shootout is over.
- 6:11And I had some people tell me that there were mothers and
- 6:18fathers down there. Just heartbroke that their child
- 6:23was not getting any attention. I understand this.
- 6:30I understand this. There was 1800 roughly plus or
- 6:36minus about 1800 carts. Let's just say there was
- 6:44thousands of mom and dads. That's, that's an accurate
- 6:47statement. There were thousands of mom and
- 6:50dads down there at the Tulsa shootout and they were cheering
- 6:54on their six year old child all the way up to I mean, I guess
- 6:59when you're grown up, you're still a child, right?
- 7:02So you could be 6 years old all the way to 25 years old.
- 7:08But it came to my attention that Owen Larson, Braxton Bush, a lot
- 7:18of these, these drivers, these NASCAR drivers, kids were, were
- 7:23getting too much attention. And a lot of the mom and dads
- 7:27were devastated. They were hurt that their child
- 7:31was not receiving TV time. OK, now that I've laid that out,
- 7:36I want to explain something to all your mom and dads that are
- 7:39watching. Number one, I love you so much.
- 7:42And I and I know what it's like to have children and want them
- 7:46to have the have everything. I'm a girl dad.
- 7:49I have three daughters, Brooke, Brandy and Brittany.
- 7:53And Brandy she wanted to race until she decided she did not
- 7:57want to race. But I'm just I'm going to tell
- 8:03you my story. When I started racing I learned
- 8:062 tough lessons and I want to share these lessons with you.
- 8:10Hopefully this will help you. Mother and fathers #1 remember
- 8:16what Father John told me when Kim and I were getting ready to
- 8:20get married? She's a Catholic, I'm a
- 8:21Lutheran. We go to pre cana class.
- 8:25This is where you know the man that's going to marry you
- 8:28decides if you're compatible or not.
- 8:32We just getting married no matter what.
- 8:34But they wanted me to go. Kim's family wanted me to go.
- 8:37Father John looked at me and he said, Kenny, what are you going
- 8:42to do for a living? Oh, I was so excited.
- 8:44I said, oh, Father John, I'm going to be a race car driver.
- 8:48He looked at me and he says, Kenny, be careful, competition
- 8:53will kill you. One of the biggest lessons I've
- 8:58ever had in my life. So for all you mom and dads out
- 9:02there, remember that. Remember, competition will kill
- 9:07you. See, I'm not worried about the
- 9:10kids. The kids are kind of too young.
- 9:11I'm worried about the mom and dads.
- 9:14I'm worried about the mom and dads.
- 9:15And I love you all so much. OK, All right, the second lesson
- 9:22that needs to be taught to the mom and dads because I love you
- 9:25all so much. My career started getting going
- 9:30and you know my sponsor, my sponsors, they you know, I'm, I
- 9:35was always taking care of my sponsors.
- 9:37You all know it's a fact. Kenny Wallace always got
- 9:41sponsors, always went and got the money because I wanted to
- 9:44race. I'll never forget Rodger Penske
- 9:47saying to me, we don't race unless we got a sponsor.
- 9:52That's where I learned that from.
- 9:55I thought, Oh my gosh, if Rodger Penske says that, then that must
- 9:59be true. Rodger Penske said if we don't
- 10:02have money, we don't race. So I understood the art of
- 10:05sponsorship. So I went to the I went to the
- 10:10TV people all the time, even when I was not in TV, when I was
- 10:14not in TVI found the TV executives and I went to him and
- 10:18I said put me on TV. Put please put me on TV for my
- 10:23sponsors, put me on TV for my sponsors.
- 10:26So my sponsors are happy. Now this message is for all you
- 10:31mom and dads out there that were upset that Owen Larson and Lil
- 10:36Braxton Bush got too much TV time and your child didn't get
- 10:41on TV. You know what that TV executive
- 10:44said to me, Kenny Wallace, give me a reason to put you on TV.
- 10:51So it is a sad part of competition.
- 10:56There's only one way you get on TV.
- 10:58You got to run up front. If you run up front, they'll put
- 11:03you on TV. Those are two sad things that
- 11:10will help you mother and father's out.
- 11:12See, I truly believe that you, mom and dad's want it more than
- 11:16the kid. You take these kids at three to
- 11:19four years old and you tell them you want to race, don't you?
- 11:22Hey, you want to be a race car driver, don't you?
- 11:24And then the kid doesn't want to disappoint you, the boy or girl.
- 11:28The girl doesn't want to disappoint you.
- 11:30Yeah, Daddy, I'm going to be a race car driver because you're
- 11:32telling me I'm going to be a race car driver.
- 11:39Remember, Competition to kill you.
- 11:42But I think it's going to kill you Mom and dads first because
- 11:45the kids just living by what you tell them.
- 11:48The kid is just living by what you tell them and what you
- 11:51instill in their brain. At three and four years old now,
- 11:56I love you all and I worry about you all.
- 11:59And the reason I worry about y'all is I have 3 girls and I
- 12:01know what it's, I know what it's like.
- 12:03But I had a little bit of tutoring.
- 12:05I was taught in an early age how to deal with this.
- 12:10So it's two things. Remember, competition will kill
- 12:14you. Be careful.
- 12:15And then the other one is give me a reason to show your son or
- 12:22your daughter on TV. Give me a reason not just that
- 12:26they race because at the Tulsa shootout there was thousands of
- 12:30children. And how many divisions were
- 12:33there? 5 S just take five times
- 12:3755101525 people, if you if you covered the top 551015202525,
- 12:49I'll give you 5050 kids, but there's thousands when you go to
- 12:53the Tulsa shootout, remember you're against all odds.
- 12:57You're going up against thousands of other.
- 13:00It's the toughest place. All right, I love you all.
- 13:05Have a great Tuesday.
