Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Is swearing really that bad?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Swearing unless you're a bishop, or maybe they do it
- 0:02Speaker 1: in private as well. Most of us do this, don't we,
- 0:04Speaker 1: especially in New Zealand. We all know what a GC
- 0:07Speaker 1: is and it's nothing to do with the white sandy
- 0:09Speaker 1: beaches of Queensland. You don't do it in front of mum.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Everyone knows that that's just one oh one of swearing
- 0:16Speaker 1: and you shouldn't use the words and anger at people
- 0:19Speaker 1: unless they really really deserve it, and then it's fine.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But have you noticed lately the media's obsession with calling
- 0:25Speaker 1: out people for swearing. Exhibit A is a furious, apparently
- 0:30Speaker 1: furious Benji Marshall, West's Tigers coach at the expletive laden presser.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Is how they described this. The fact that people can
- 0:37Speaker 1: make up rumors that we're having a relationship breakdown or
- 0:40Speaker 1: a rift between our friendship. There's absolutely so. The media
- 0:45Speaker 1: had been saying he was in a spat or a
- 0:46Speaker 1: row with a now former player and they were at war,
- 0:49Speaker 1: et cetera, et cetera. You know what the media does,
- 0:51Speaker 1: none of which, according to Benji, was actually true. So
- 0:54Speaker 1: he responds and they say he's ranting and swearing and
- 0:57Speaker 1: quote going nuclear isn't what they used to call gaslighting,
- 1:02Speaker 1: remember that. Then there was Winston Peters and you will
- 1:05Speaker 1: remember this one. I haven't been around this long to
- 1:08Speaker 1: come on this program to talk about that sort of
- 1:09Speaker 1: whack up them in question.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Now the media called that a foul language outburst. How
- 1:17Speaker 2: can a word that so many people use describing an
- 1:20Speaker 2: act that clearly so many people do, be.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So offensive and worthy of mention? Christine Fletcher Auckland Council
- 1:27Speaker 1: complains about swearing and the council chambers at the moment
- 1:30Speaker 1: the Dunedin Council boss, did you see this yesterday? Was
- 1:33Speaker 1: done for swearing about counselors and calling them bad words
- 1:36Speaker 1: behind their backs. Who hasn't done that? The truth is
- 1:40Speaker 1: that most of us don't mind occasionally too much and
- 1:43Speaker 1: you sound like trash too little, and you sound a
- 1:46Speaker 1: bit too cautious directed in anger. Never a good idea
- 1:50Speaker 1: should not happen at work either. The obsession with people
- 1:54Speaker 1: using it from time to time, though, especially in the
- 1:56Speaker 1: age of the Internet where people do and say whatever
- 1:59Speaker 1: they want, well that's a waste of beeping time for more.
- 2:04Speaker 2: From early edition with Ryan Bridge.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Listen live to news talks. It'd be from five am weekdays,
- 2:10Speaker 1: or follow the podcast on iHeartRadio
