- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello everybody.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'm Ty tri Hel I play bass in Suicidal Tendencies and.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Ida Fantastic Pray. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Thank you for having me pleasure.
- 0:13Speaker 3: So we've got a bit to get through today, but
- 0:14Speaker 3: we'll start off on the big pressing one like Suicidal
- 0:17Speaker 3: Tendencies hit Australia in under a month for a run
- 0:20Speaker 3: of shows with Metallica and Evan Essence, kicking off in
- 0:23Speaker 3: Perth on November the first. You hit Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney,
- 0:27Speaker 3: finishing Auckland on November nineteen. So it's a pretty good lineup, mate.
- 0:31Speaker 3: You must be hanging out for it.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Oh man, I'm super super happy to be back out
- 0:36Speaker 1: in that part of the world. It's literally one of
- 0:39Speaker 1: my favorite countries ever.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I'll be atually say that to all the guys.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Yeah, and not only you've got those six days of Metallica,
- 0:50Speaker 4: but Suicidal Tendencies of Alstoy managed spit up the six
- 0:53Speaker 4: Tide shows in playing a neat city around the Metallica dates.
- 0:56Speaker 3: So Deadlock, it's going to be all work and no
- 0:58Speaker 3: play for you, my friend.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's gonna be.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It's gonna be a lot of busyness, but you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: when when there's some open windows, I'm definitely gonna try
- 1:06Speaker 2: to get out to the ocean, jump in the water,
- 1:08Speaker 2: get some surfing, so we'll see you.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So have they done any shows of Metallica on that
- 1:15Speaker 3: side of the world, you know, or at least going
- 1:16Speaker 3: to be your first?
- 1:19Speaker 2: I So, I mean I did suicidal shows in that
- 1:23Speaker 2: said the world a couple of times already, so I've
- 1:25Speaker 2: been there like twice in the span of a year.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but never on.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Tour with like opening for Metallica out there, So that'll
- 1:36Speaker 2: be first.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Time I said, Hey, how do you get with the
- 1:39Speaker 3: Metallica crafts? By a lot they're they're traditionally private metallic.
- 1:43Speaker 3: They heightened the support bands, but through Sutle Tennessee should
- 1:46Speaker 3: have enough straight credit. Did I at least show you
- 1:47Speaker 3: a better respect day? Yeah?
- 1:50Speaker 1: I think I think they should.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Am.
- 1:53Speaker 1: You know, they've been pretty cool.
- 1:54Speaker 2: The crowd has been pretty great throughout the US tour,
- 1:58Speaker 2: in Canada tour.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I expect Australia actually maybe even be
- 2:06Speaker 2: a little more maybe a little more wild.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Who knows, you've been out of that many times of
- 2:12Speaker 3: sic totals right, they're probably putting Metallica off stage and
- 2:14Speaker 3: cheat you guys on.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's how it is.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Although the nights you've planned with Metallica, you're going to
- 2:24Speaker 3: be playing stadium size arenas, but for the side shows
- 2:27Speaker 3: are going to be much smaller, more intimate venues. Other
- 2:30Speaker 3: than the size of the venues, how different the two
- 2:31Speaker 3: show it's going to be.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I think they're going to be drastically different because the
- 2:36Speaker 2: big shows are.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Like super like wide and like it's not like as intimate.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Then the small shows are.
- 2:47Speaker 2: More like in your face, you know, and the crowds
- 2:49Speaker 2: is wild. I mean both are equally great, though.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I'll put you on this body, bro, Personally,
- 2:57Speaker 3: what do you prefer to play the bigger ones or
- 2:59Speaker 3: the one where people are up in any face?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh, it's I mean, I would say it's a tie.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I think they're both different. They're both great in different ways.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you've got to tie from Chai.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 3: The other cool thing about the Metallica show is you're
- 3:17Speaker 3: gonna be playing with your dad, who's on the same
- 3:20Speaker 3: bill as Metallic and Space Payer. Of course, that's not
- 3:23Speaker 3: much the real to think about, made like going on
- 3:25Speaker 3: tour on the other side of the world with your
- 3:27Speaker 3: old man and you and the same children party.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's it's gonna be. Yeah, it's pretty crazy
- 3:33Speaker 1: to think of that.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And yeah, it's gonna be a great time, great hangs
- 3:37Speaker 2: with everybody, you know, with dad and with the band
- 3:40Speaker 2: guys and everybody.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It's gonna be. It's good. Yeah, something I'm looking forward to.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, what what's your dad like on tours all that? Mate, Like,
- 3:48Speaker 3: does he stained dad made with you or you just
- 3:51Speaker 3: like another muso? I'm sure.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Al it's like, you know, he's got his routine and
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know they all have their routine, so you know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: well we'll get some time in hanging out together, but
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, a good amount. But then there'll be times
- 4:07Speaker 2: where you know, they'll be in the he'll be in
- 4:09Speaker 2: the next city, or I'll be coming in to meet up,
- 4:14Speaker 2: you know, to meet up with them for the show,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and you know I won't get there until a little
- 4:18Speaker 2: later on than they do. So, yeah, he does grund
- 4:24Speaker 2: if you l like you mean, yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Rug played with suicideal Tendessees before you join s what
- 4:34Speaker 3: you did join the band? Did he give you any
- 4:35Speaker 3: advice on how to play or what to do? Did
- 4:37Speaker 3: he just say you sort of grow into the role yourself.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So I listened to a lot of the songs on
- 4:43Speaker 2: my own and I played through him, but then I
- 4:44Speaker 2: asked him some questions about certain parts and he helped
- 4:48Speaker 2: me through them. I listened through him, like the more
- 4:50Speaker 2: complex sections and some of the albums he played on
- 4:54Speaker 2: m SO here and there, but mainly I listened to
- 4:57Speaker 2: him just kind of by my ear.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And what was it like learning bass parts did he
- 5:04Speaker 3: wrote for the band?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Like?
- 5:05Speaker 3: Were they challenging to learn or were they similar to
- 5:07Speaker 3: what you might come up with?
- 5:09Speaker 1: There's there's there's similar. I think.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It's a lot of straightforward stuff, I would say in
- 5:16Speaker 2: terms of the riffs and stuff. So it wasn't crazy
- 5:21Speaker 2: hard but really cool riffstyle.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Would you have done it much differently if you
- 5:26Speaker 3: if you're right.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I mean maybe I probably would have played some parts differently,
- 5:31Speaker 2: Like you know, the naturally of what I since they're
- 5:34Speaker 2: playing style is slightly different.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so probably yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yeah. And overally is like you guys have played on
- 5:42Speaker 3: you and your dad, I mean, and played on stage together,
- 5:44Speaker 3: numbers on. So what's what's the one memorable moment that
- 5:47Speaker 3: stands out to you the most being on stage with him.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I think.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Way back, like when I was really young, we I
- 6:00Speaker 2: played in a band. Well it was like a kid's
- 6:03Speaker 2: cover band before before like I you know, formed auto
- 6:08Speaker 2: or anything. Uh. We played like my dad used to
- 6:11Speaker 2: come up on stage with us and jammed the song
- 6:13Speaker 2: with us for fun, an original song with us, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: it would be like you know, like at a few
- 6:21Speaker 2: shows we did it, and it was very memorable because
- 6:24Speaker 2: it was like my first time really like like playing
- 6:28Speaker 2: with him on stage and everybody was like super engaged
- 6:33Speaker 2: and that was pretty crazy.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Yeah, when when you first started playing bass, like when
- 6:39Speaker 3: you were younger broad Light, did he teach you how
- 6:42Speaker 3: to play or did you sort of go up more
- 6:43Speaker 3: on your own and learn from other people and make
- 6:46Speaker 3: it important to learn your own sort of style.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He taught me how to play like certain parts and
- 6:53Speaker 2: stuff and certain things, but then I took that sort
- 6:56Speaker 2: of I took that advice he gave me, and then
- 6:59Speaker 2: I have to sit on my own and then like
- 7:02Speaker 2: learn some stuff on my own with that.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Yeah, So what point of your career? Like, so mates
- 7:09Speaker 3: we've got there are in bands of their kids and stuff.
- 7:11Speaker 3: As well, you know, like it. It's even on the
- 7:13Speaker 3: smaller level, it's hard for the kids to break away
- 7:15Speaker 3: from their dad's shadow to an extend. Even though that
- 7:17Speaker 3: I want to, I still want to become their identity.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Like do you remember at what point you actually sort
- 7:22Speaker 3: of sat back and thought, this is it. Now I've
- 7:24Speaker 3: got it, you know, like I'm my own man.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I think like I'm still you know, I think because
- 7:36Speaker 2: it's uh this yeah, because I think it's a journey,
- 7:42Speaker 2: you know, I think it really is, because I I
- 7:45Speaker 2: still think that, you know, I definitely am you know,
- 7:50Speaker 2: my own identity and own uh you know, own person
- 7:54Speaker 2: on stage and you know, my own style. But I
- 7:57Speaker 2: still think, you know, some people don't catch on to
- 8:01Speaker 2: that yet. And I think I think I'm still on
- 8:04Speaker 2: my way to that point where you know, I mean myself,
- 8:07Speaker 2: I am confident where I'm like, yeah, I'm on my
- 8:09Speaker 2: own person and like I my own type of player.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And I've always known that, I think throughout the whole time.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But I think like where I feel like everybody catches
- 8:22Speaker 2: onto it, it's I'm still I think it's still on
- 8:25Speaker 2: my way to that, you know, still on my way.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Sorry for that one. On you, I was hard one
- 8:30Speaker 3: to answer.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Oh good, yeah, away.
- 8:36Speaker 3: From suicidal Tendency. If you've also got another band called
- 8:38Speaker 3: Auto who released on your EPCE Sweaty Pool of December
- 8:42Speaker 3: the theft, like I've not asked, like, what's the story
- 8:45Speaker 3: behind the three t's in Auto? Like it doesn't even
- 8:47Speaker 3: look right when you look at it.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So the original thing was just like a business copyright issue.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But make it interesting though. It's like we were like
- 8:58Speaker 2: a three piece kind of band. So for each member,
- 9:01Speaker 2: tea who represented them?
- 9:06Speaker 3: So to tell us more about Sweaty Pool musically, browan
- 9:09Speaker 3: and what you guys are gone for with it?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Mm hmm, yeah, I mean Sweaty Pool is really just
- 9:14Speaker 2: a you know, a trippy song because it really is
- 9:18Speaker 2: a combination between a lot of different styles and the
- 9:21Speaker 2: one kind of melting pot.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Yeah and you had so you got the called sweaty Pool.
- 9:30Speaker 3: But they're also releasing the single on the Tent, which
- 9:33Speaker 3: has got Nick OLIVERI in it. Brother, So not a
- 9:35Speaker 3: bad way to introduce paper of the Ape with him
- 9:37Speaker 3: on it.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man, he's you know, legendary guy and you
- 9:41Speaker 2: know I've he's one of the he's like one of
- 9:44Speaker 2: the first you musicians slash vocalist bass players have ever
- 9:49Speaker 2: listened to that really inspired me, So him having him
- 9:55Speaker 2: was a huge honor. And he's such a great guy,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know, beat it.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Guess on Otto's music like it'd be a double edged
- 10:04Speaker 3: swords for you too, wouldn't it make its Like? On
- 10:06Speaker 3: one hand, you know a hell of a lot of
- 10:08Speaker 3: great musicians from growing up who'd probably never say no
- 10:11Speaker 3: if he asked him to be on it. But I'm
- 10:13Speaker 3: also guessing you want to see Otto rides through music
- 10:15Speaker 3: more on the back of your music, not who you
- 10:17Speaker 3: are and who you know. So it'd be a bit
- 10:19Speaker 3: of a balance, isn't it.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I think I see it more as like as a
- 10:24Speaker 2: collaboration rather like than you know, using or anything. I
- 10:28Speaker 2: think it's a it's a collaboration. You want to make
- 10:31Speaker 2: sure everybody is feeling equally a part of it, you know.
- 10:36Speaker 2: And I think that's where Nicola Varia is like a
- 10:38Speaker 2: collaboration because like he felt like the song was like
- 10:42Speaker 2: authentic and uh, you know, you could add something to
- 10:47Speaker 2: the table and and it all came about and a
- 10:52Speaker 2: collaborative effort and just felt natural.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I suppose you would have written written music with
- 11:00Speaker 3: a lot of different people over the years. Bro, Like,
- 11:02Speaker 3: who's who's the person you've gelled with most in a
- 11:05Speaker 3: writing capacity and come out with some really cool stuff?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Oh that's it. That's yeah, it's crazy.
- 11:14Speaker 2: There's a lot of people, you know, like, Uh, I've
- 11:18Speaker 2: jelled a lot with I jell a lot with the guys,
- 11:22Speaker 2: I would say, and Auto.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You know, with all of us, we all jell really
- 11:25Speaker 1: well together.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Like Michael Patrick and I like when we get together
- 11:32Speaker 2: in a room, we just like build so much off
- 11:35Speaker 2: of each other, like it's a it's it's really incredible.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Really Yeah, imagine now you've got the title tracks thready bold,
- 11:42Speaker 3: You've got the EP, but the title tracks one that's
- 11:44Speaker 3: been released. So is that a good sonic representation of
- 11:47Speaker 3: what we expect from the Holy EP? Or is that
- 11:49Speaker 3: just sketch a surface.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Like the single?
- 11:54Speaker 3: You mean?
- 11:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say so, I'm I mean, I think
- 12:01Speaker 2: there's some surprises on there there. You know, Sweaty Pool
- 12:05Speaker 2: is one tune, but then there's some other stuff that
- 12:08Speaker 2: is like slightly different too.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So it's difficult to say.
- 12:13Speaker 2: It depends on who the person has listened to it
- 12:16Speaker 2: and their point of interpretation on it.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, would be so for people who've been with
- 12:22Speaker 3: that from the start. Mate, Like, how would you say
- 12:24Speaker 3: music's grown or changed from the twenty twenty self Grow
- 12:28Speaker 3: to Sweaty Pool.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I think a lot of things have changed. I think
- 12:33Speaker 1: I think this EP is definitely more of a nineties
- 12:37Speaker 1: influenced kind of musical style rather than the other stuff was.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Some of the other stuff was slightly different, but I
- 12:49Speaker 2: think I mean, I think a lot of our stuff
- 12:52Speaker 2: either way, I.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Mean, it was timeless.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I wouldn't want to pinpoint a time frame to it,
- 12:57Speaker 2: but I think the EPs definitely way, way more like.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Influenced from that era. I think.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, herl now not only will you be touring Australia
- 13:13Speaker 3: with your dad, but your mom's also tominated with her
- 13:15Speaker 3: band Bull of Eyes to her runner show starting Melbourne
- 13:18Speaker 3: November twenty first. So are you or your dad gonna
- 13:21Speaker 3: hang around and support her tour? Are you both gonna
- 13:23Speaker 3: take a risk and never being spoken to again and
- 13:25Speaker 3: go home before it starts?
- 13:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:28Speaker 6: I mean we're we want to go support you know,
- 13:33Speaker 6: we're gonna we're gonna you know, we're gonna support her
- 13:36Speaker 6: and support everybody, and you know, it's it's gonna be fun,
- 13:40Speaker 6: it's gonna be family hanging.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Then I believe your sister Lula are also drums of
- 13:46Speaker 3: bull of a device. I don't think she's coming on
- 13:47Speaker 3: this tour, but he's in the band. That's That's what
- 13:50Speaker 3: hell of a talented music family you got, bro, Like,
- 13:52Speaker 3: what instrument dies? Your tap play? I reckon everyone there?
- 13:55Speaker 3: You play?
- 13:58Speaker 1: Thank you? Yeah you're saying, what insurance is my cat?
- 14:04Speaker 3: Your cat play? Everyone pay?
- 14:08Speaker 1: I got now?
- 14:11Speaker 2: I wonder, I mean, so many instruments, so many fans.
- 14:14Speaker 2: You know, family is very creative musically talented. My sister
- 14:21Speaker 2: actually has she has her own she h, she's not
- 14:25Speaker 2: you know, she's not playing with Boulevard of Eyes at
- 14:28Speaker 2: the moment because she has her own projects now. But
- 14:30Speaker 2: she was playing for a while and she has really
- 14:34Speaker 2: new great bands called UH Employee of the Month in JAG,
- 14:38Speaker 2: and so she's been very very busy playing uh like
- 14:44Speaker 2: playing around here and doing her artwork. So it's incredible
- 14:48Speaker 2: to see like how everybody's just really focused and it
- 14:51Speaker 2: inspires me to like keep going.
- 14:54Speaker 3: I basically does right now before me that you got
- 14:56Speaker 3: up started a new segment called Fido Bob So basically,
- 14:59Speaker 3: I'm going through your search for before you got a chat.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I've come up with some folks. I want to ask
- 15:02Speaker 3: you a little bit more about just yet segment, bro,
- 15:06Speaker 3: But I've come up with this one. Like the poso
- 15:08Speaker 3: on the lamb, it's the best one I can find
- 15:12Speaker 3: of you leaping into the air on stage and the
- 15:14Speaker 3: one on the right is guitar is Ben on on
- 15:17Speaker 3: an average night, Mate, Like, it looks like you're gonna
- 15:19Speaker 3: have to look your game a little bit at the
- 15:22Speaker 3: hype difference.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Oh, I know, man, I can't keep up with Ben. Man,
- 15:26Speaker 1: he's he's he's wild. Yeah, that looks like uh I
- 15:33Speaker 1: was from our show in the Netherlands.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I think right, So you've jumped off the top step
- 15:39Speaker 3: and you've only got that far and he's understanding start
- 15:42Speaker 3: he's about three meters in the air.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't keep up with Ben. He's insane.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I love, yeah, I love love His jumps and stuff
- 15:50Speaker 2: isn't seen and his on bandlinger estep plan is incredible.
- 15:55Speaker 3: What's what's the like being on stage with those guys?
- 15:58Speaker 3: Like do you say he's all over the so do
- 16:00Speaker 3: you have to have your your safe corner? We just
- 16:03Speaker 3: you're gonna add any get away from me.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You know, it's it's inspiring to be on stage with
- 16:09Speaker 2: those guys because I learned so much from them, from
- 16:12Speaker 2: their stage presence, from their musical skills. I definitely, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 2: look out to be aware of everybody and try not
- 16:21Speaker 2: to bump into people.
- 16:24Speaker 1: So that's something to be knowledge of.
- 16:26Speaker 2: But uh, yeah, whenever I'm running around, like I can't
- 16:30Speaker 2: run into this guy, I can't run into this guy.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Person, they did not have a guy are on stage.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Yeah, man is is the young chi on stage, gentleman
- 16:47Speaker 5: by the night of Jonathan David.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So look at that small up face happy in you
- 16:52Speaker 3: at that.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Moment, Man, I was so happy.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I'm so happy to see that photo because that was
- 16:59Speaker 2: a bad and you know, and is a band that
- 17:02Speaker 2: has inspired me like verse since I first started playing.
- 17:08Speaker 2: So that during that tour was really like a magical
- 17:11Speaker 2: thing that I never knew what happened, So pretty awesome and.
- 17:15Speaker 3: His man, and first thing I noticed was as small
- 17:17Speaker 3: on your face And then I looked at him and
- 17:19Speaker 3: the small on his face all bright, like he's just
- 17:21Speaker 3: as happy to have you there is what you are
- 17:23Speaker 3: to be on stage with him, which is beautiful.
- 17:26Speaker 1: That's beautiful. Yeah, very beautiful moment. Yeah, legends, all legends.
- 17:32Speaker 3: And it's at a three string bass. You're playing, man
