Latest / Outspoken the Podcast / Mia Plecic’s Slick Stick Trademark Drama
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: Kate Torber. And I'm Sophie Torber. And coming up on
- 0:13Speaker 1: today's show, Mia Plesik accuses Boof Hair of infringing on
- 0:17Speaker 1: her Slick Stick trademark. And Talia Skanes is baffling Eros content.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But first, Sky Wheatley has admitted she thought her breakup
- 0:25Speaker 1: with baby daddy Lockie War would hurt more. A bit
- 0:29Speaker 1: of a burn for Lockie. I don't think he would
- 0:30Speaker 1: have enjoyed hearing that. So she revealed this latest news
- 0:33Speaker 1: in an Instagram Q & A when she was asked
- 0:35Speaker 1: if she's happier now being single. And she said that
- 0:39Speaker 1: she needs more time to ponder the question because it's
- 0:41Speaker 1: such a deep one. She admitted though that she was
- 0:44Speaker 1: expecting the breakup to hurt more, but the pain has
- 0:47Speaker 1: been going in waves. I nearly said coming in waves,
- 0:49Speaker 1: which was a song by Dean Geyer, which everyone was like,
- 0:51Speaker 1: What a poorly named song. I mean, as a 14
- 0:54Speaker 1: year old, it went over the top of my head
- 0:56Speaker 1: at the time. I just think it was cruel because
- 0:58Speaker 1: he was the virgin on Australian Idol and they get
- 1:00Speaker 1: him to sing about coming in waves. Well, also, I mean,
- 1:03Speaker 1: a lot of people might not know that the song
- 1:05Speaker 1: Untouched was written about him because as you said, he
- 1:07Speaker 1: was a virgin. I love that song.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Me too.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And I love doing Gaia. Me too. Loving his new
- 1:12Speaker 1: dad life content at the moment. Anyway, we digress. So
- 1:14Speaker 1: back to Sky Wheatley. She said that the experience has
- 1:17Speaker 1: been intense and crazy, but As it progresses, she keeps
- 1:20Speaker 1: thinking to herself, oh, I expected this to hurt a
- 1:23Speaker 1: lot more. And I wonder if that's because Lockie and
- 1:26Speaker 1: her have had this pattern of breaking up and getting
- 1:28Speaker 1: back together and finally they appear to have actually broken
- 1:32Speaker 1: up officially. And it doesn't seem like they're going to
- 1:35Speaker 1: be reconciling. And it seems like she's like, oh, I
- 1:37Speaker 1: probably should have done this ages ago. I think it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: also a case that maybe she's already grieved the relationship
- 1:43Speaker 1: during those breaks and it hasn't come as this shock.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So she's already sort of worked through her feelings towards him.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And it's like, oh, okay. Like I'm sure, obviously it's
- 1:52Speaker 1: not an ideal situation with their kids and that would
- 1:54Speaker 1: be really difficult and heartbreaking, but she probably realizes that
- 1:58Speaker 1: she is happier in her own company and not constantly
- 2:01Speaker 1: fighting as what seems to be the case. Skye has
- 2:03Speaker 1: spoken a lot in the past about her relationship with food.
- 2:06Speaker 1: She is a binge eater and she actually spoke about
- 2:10Speaker 1: how at the moment she can't stop eating. And she
- 2:13Speaker 1: said it's actually a good sign for her because normally
- 2:15Speaker 1: when she's upset and feeling sad and depressed, she loses
- 2:18Speaker 1: her appetite. I mean, she didn't specify if she was
- 2:21Speaker 1: actually binge eating, but The way she phrased it, it
- 2:23Speaker 1: seemed like more of a healthy situation. Well, yeah, she
- 2:26Speaker 1: said that when she feels good, she generally enjoys food more.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So it sounds like maybe it's in a healthy way. Now,
- 2:33Speaker 1: a follower also asked Skye to do a story time
- 2:35Speaker 1: about her recent drink driving charges. And she revealed that
- 2:39Speaker 1: she actually has an upcoming podcast appearance in Perth this week,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and she's going to be chatting about it then. What
- 2:46Speaker 1: podcast do you think this is? Because I was first like, oh,
- 2:48Speaker 1: is it Adele Petropolis? Because, of course, she interviewed Jules Neal,
- 2:51Speaker 1: who's based in Perth. But then I was like, no, wait,
- 2:54Speaker 1: Adele is based in Melbourne. Well, I'm more thinking it's
- 2:56Speaker 1: probably a part of a live show. Is Abby Chatfield
- 3:00Speaker 1: touring at the moment? That's a good point. Look, I
- 3:02Speaker 1: just did a live Google and Abby Chatfield's podcast tour
- 3:05Speaker 1: wrapped up a couple of months ago. Dan does footy.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He's touring at the moment, but that's in Melbourne. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: I wouldn't think Sky Wheatley would be a guest of his.
- 3:12Speaker 1: That's Dan Gorin, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, Gorin.
- 3:15Speaker 2: What?
- 3:15Speaker 1: You never know. He popped up in Lucy and Nikki's
- 3:18Speaker 1: recent ad for their upcoming live shows. Yeah. Well, he was,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I mean, it's a bit awkward to talk about it,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but I think he was one of their surprise guests
- 3:24Speaker 1: as well. There's Myth Warhurst as well. None of them
- 3:27Speaker 1: really screams Sky Wheatley. No. I mean, maybe it's not
- 3:30Speaker 1: a live show. It could just be an in-person filming.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Who knows? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
- 3:36Speaker 3: That just went to buying stock off Alibaba. We're talking
- 3:39Speaker 3: like Probably the lowest quality.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Any cute packaging or are you just sending that out?
- 3:44Speaker 3: It was just a black bottle that had an existing
- 3:47Speaker 3: white label logo on it.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Controversial Slick Stick owner Mia Plesic has vowed to do
- 3:52Speaker 1: whatever it takes to block Booth Hair from selling its
- 3:55Speaker 1: new styling product, the Hair Master. The serial entrepreneur has
- 3:59Speaker 1: accused the popular hair care brand of infringing on her trademark,
- 4:04Speaker 1: declaring that there's no originality anymore. So before we get
- 4:07Speaker 1: into the drama, can you bring listeners up to speed
- 4:10Speaker 1: with the main players? Yeah, well, I feel like OG
- 4:12Speaker 1: listeners will be quite familiar with Mia Plesic, but for
- 4:15Speaker 1: anyone who is new to the podcast, let's get into it.
- 4:18Speaker 1: So she is a 34-year-old entrepreneur from Melbourne who owns
- 4:22Speaker 1: Slick Hair Company. She actually launched the brand back in
- 4:26Speaker 1: 2019 with the Slick Stick Hair Wand as her hero product. Now,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I first came across Mia in 2017 and When she
- 4:33Speaker 1: started appearing in Michael Finch's vlogs, she was... Oh, because
- 4:36Speaker 1: she was his manager, wasn't she? She was dressed head
- 4:39Speaker 1: to toe in designer gear. It literally looked like Balenciaga
- 4:42Speaker 1: had vomited on her. And she was the one who
- 4:44Speaker 1: helped facilitate his masterclasses around the country. We were only
- 4:48Speaker 1: talking about Michael Finch's masterclasses a couple of months ago
- 4:51Speaker 1: when Sam Guggenheimer and Mia Langley tried to do their
- 4:54Speaker 1: social media influencer class. Well, I mean, they were so
- 4:58Speaker 1: of the time, those classes, weren't they? Because I actually
- 5:00Speaker 1: can't imagine... teenagers forking out, you know, 500 bucks these
- 5:04Speaker 1: days to sit and watch something like that. I reckon
- 5:07Speaker 1: for the right influence that they would. But I reckon
- 5:09Speaker 1: there's too much scrutiny now. Like, I don't think people
- 5:11Speaker 1: are going to... Oh, like an influencer couldn't charge that anymore.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah, probably not. It does seem like their partnership ended
- 5:18Speaker 1: on quite bad terms. The pair ended up unfollowing each
- 5:20Speaker 1: other and there were a lot of whispers of a
- 5:23Speaker 1: friendship fallout. Mia is a very divisive figure, so I'm
- 5:26Speaker 1: not really surprised She attracted a lot of attention during COVID.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Not only did she attend anti-lockdown protests, but she also
- 5:34Speaker 1: allegedly shared her plans to find a black market doctor
- 5:38Speaker 1: to sign a COVID passport for her. That just has
- 5:41Speaker 1: given me PTSD, even talking about that. It actually seems
- 5:44Speaker 1: like such a long time ago, but then again, yesterday?
- 5:47Speaker 1: It's so weird to actually put a timeframe on that.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Over the last couple of years, she's also been accused
- 5:53Speaker 1: of not upholding her end of contra deals. So when
- 5:57Speaker 1: she celebrated her 30th birthday, she was actually accused of
- 6:01Speaker 1: not properly promoting the contra deals in relation to the party.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And in 2024, she faced legal action after not upholding
- 6:08Speaker 1: her end of a contra deal with bridal boutique, Champery Couture. Yes,
- 6:12Speaker 1: we covered that in depth. I remember that story quite well.
- 6:15Speaker 1: She also has a reputation for being a serial business owner.
- 6:19Speaker 1: So In 2022, she launched a gender neutral cosmetic brand
- 6:23Speaker 1: with Sophie Keisha called Isuru. Oh, I forgot about their partnership.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I mean, I didn't forget that Sophie Keisha was involved.
- 6:30Speaker 1: But I forgot that Mia Plastic was also in on that. Yeah,
- 6:33Speaker 1: because there was that infamous wiping of the nose incident
- 6:37Speaker 1: when she was packaging some of the lipsticks from home
- 6:39Speaker 1: and we did speak about it on the podcast and
- 6:41Speaker 1: then subsequently got blasted on socials for it. I think
- 6:44Speaker 1: I forgot that Mia Plastic was involved because her part
- 6:47Speaker 1: in the project was so fleeting. Yeah, because not long
- 6:50Speaker 1: after launching, rumours started emerging of a rift between Sophie
- 6:54Speaker 1: and Mia and then Sophie had to announce on socials
- 6:57Speaker 1: that she was suddenly the sole owner of the brand. Now,
- 7:00Speaker 1: Mia also tried to move into the parenting space in 2024.
- 7:04Speaker 1: She launched a mothering Instagram account with the same name
- 7:07Speaker 1: as Australia's biggest women's media publication. So she called it
- 7:11Speaker 1: Mama Mia. I mean, a bit of a bad decision there.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I know. I mean, I get that her name is
- 7:16Speaker 1: also Mia, like Mia Friedman. But, you know, you've got
- 7:19Speaker 1: to do your due diligence and do a bit of
- 7:21Speaker 1: research into the area. Yeah. I mean, that does paint.
- 7:24Speaker 1: quite a picture of Mia and her business handlings in
- 7:27Speaker 1: the past.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And then of course, you've got Booth Hair, which is
- 7:30Speaker 1: a popular Australian hair care brand. We've spoken about the
- 7:32Speaker 1: company several times on the show, particularly because Indy Clinton
- 7:36Speaker 1: is so heavily involved in the company. She actually owns
- 7:39Speaker 1: a stake in it now. Well, she is an equity partner.
- 7:42Speaker 1: It's also co-owned by Rachel Wild, who also owns TBH Skincare.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And Boof Hair launched back in 2025 off the back
- 7:51Speaker 1: of a popular publicity stunt involving Indy Clinton. So a
- 7:54Speaker 1: video of Indy supposedly in the middle of an interview
- 7:58Speaker 1: at an office job went viral and it got a
- 8:00Speaker 1: lot of tongues wagging. Everyone was talking about this story.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It was later revealed that Indy was not only the
- 8:05Speaker 1: face of Boof Hair, but as you touched on, Kate,
- 8:08Speaker 1: that she had a stake in the business herself. And
- 8:11Speaker 1: I would say that Rachel and her team have really
- 8:13Speaker 1: made a name for themselves by pulling off these epic
- 8:15Speaker 1: marketing campaigns and publicity stunts. Also for sometimes not getting
- 8:19Speaker 1: it right, because remember their campaign with Indie when she
- 8:22Speaker 1: was wearing that wig and everyone's like, why have you
- 8:24Speaker 1: got her in a wig when she's promoting a hair
- 8:26Speaker 1: growth serum? But again, they leveraged that to get everyone talking. Exactly.
- 8:30Speaker 1: So it ended up being a bit of a PR
- 8:32Speaker 1: win there anyway. Now let's get into what went down.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So on the 16th of September, Booth launched the Hair Master.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So Similar to the Slick Stick, the product has a
- 8:41Speaker 1: wand applicator to smooth and control flyaways. Now they launched
- 8:46Speaker 1: the new product with a campaign called Slick Me Baby
- 8:49Speaker 1: One More Time. So they were of course drawing inspiration
- 8:51Speaker 1: from Britney Spears and the team was heavily praised for
- 8:54Speaker 1: using professional dancers and choreographers to recreate the 90s film clip.
- 8:59Speaker 1: So they were essentially dancing while slicking their hair with
- 9:02Speaker 1: this new wand. And the reason why people were so
- 9:05Speaker 1: happy about the campaign was because they didn't just use
- 9:09Speaker 1: AI generated content, which so many hair care brands and
- 9:12Speaker 1: skincare brands are using. I mean, we've recently spoke about
- 9:15Speaker 1: Ashy Binds using it. I mean, I had a look
- 9:17Speaker 1: at Slick Hair. They constantly use AI clips to promote
- 9:21Speaker 1: their products. And I just think it's fantastic that Booth
- 9:25Speaker 1: actually invested in local talent. Yeah, it was refreshing to
- 9:28Speaker 1: see and everyone really got around this campaign. At the
- 9:30Speaker 1: time of recording, it's had 252,000 views. I have not
- 9:35Speaker 1: seen one negative comment under the post, which is quite
- 9:37Speaker 1: unusual for social media, nor have I seen anyone drawing
- 9:41Speaker 1: comparisons to Slick Stick. Obviously, companies can moderate the comments,
- 9:45Speaker 1: but it doesn't appear that that's been going on. No,
- 9:47Speaker 1: if anything, everyone seemed to really love the campaign and
- 9:50Speaker 1: be excited by the new product. One user wrote, My
- 9:53Speaker 1: new baby hairs from Boof have been waiting for this.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Another said, whoever is in the marketing team, give them
- 9:59Speaker 1: a raise. While someone else said, you, including the dancers,
- 10:02Speaker 1: has made me love you even more. Now, the only
- 10:05Speaker 1: person who seemed to have a problem with the hair
- 10:07Speaker 1: master was Mia Plastic. So she fired back with a
- 10:11Speaker 1: real caption, the OG slick stick established 2019. Now, we
- 10:16Speaker 1: watched this together and we're still trying to make sense
- 10:18Speaker 1: of it because It was an AI, but it was
- 10:20Speaker 1: shot in a quite budget-friendly way. So there's a woman
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the video. It's not me. It's someone else. And
- 10:26Speaker 1: they have their hair pulled back into a ponytail and
- 10:30Speaker 1: a plane flies over and they kind of recoil and
- 10:33Speaker 1: cover up. Well, they duck. They duck to miss the plane.
- 10:35Speaker 1: So she ducks down and then reappears again on camera
- 10:38Speaker 1: holding a paper plane with the words across it, you
- 10:41Speaker 1: can try, but you can't copy the OG. Okay. It
- 10:44Speaker 1: shows to me that she's threatened. Because if you're the
- 10:47Speaker 1: original and the best and the greatest and you've got
- 10:50Speaker 1: this established audience who loves your product, then why are
- 10:53Speaker 1: you worried that they're going to go to someone else?
- 10:55Speaker 1: I just found the rebuttal a bit embarrassing because Boof's
- 10:58Speaker 1: campaign was praised for being so professional and sleek. I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 1: pardon the pun, but the rebuttal just looked so amateur. Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And the fact that it's only received 14.6 thousand views
- 11:11Speaker 1: on Instagram and 913 on TikTok. Like clearly it hasn't
- 11:16Speaker 1: gone off the way Mia thought it would because for her,
- 11:19Speaker 1: she doesn't shy away from controversy. And we all know
- 11:22Speaker 1: in this day and age, controversy means engagement and attention
- 11:26Speaker 1: for brands. So she obviously was hoping that this might
- 11:29Speaker 1: get a bit of attention and get people thinking of
- 11:32Speaker 1: slick hair again. I mean, there were a couple of
- 11:34Speaker 1: people commenting under the post in her favor, but I
- 11:38Speaker 1: kind of got the vibe that they were either friends
- 11:40Speaker 1: or they worked at Slick Hair. So one person wrote,
- 11:43Speaker 1: had to be the same color too, question mark, question mark.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Another said, can never keep up with the OG, 10
- 11:49Speaker 1: steps ahead. Whilst another said, I was shocked. Now Mia
- 11:53Speaker 1: decided to address it further online, writing, you can't copy
- 11:56Speaker 1: the original, but they'll try and I'll do everything it
- 11:59Speaker 1: takes to stop it. Imitation is flattering, but straight out
- 12:02Speaker 1: infringing trademarks is wild. There's no originality anymore. It's sad. Now,
- 12:08Speaker 1: I totally understand why she's threatened and concerned as a
- 12:10Speaker 1: business owner, because she is coming up against two big
- 12:13Speaker 1: guns in Indy Clinton and Rachel Wild. But in the
- 12:16Speaker 1: same breath, I think it's a bit rich to be
- 12:17Speaker 1: claiming that this is her original idea. The irony is
- 12:21Speaker 1: that Slick Stick started out as a white label product
- 12:24Speaker 1: in 2020. I was a bit shocked when I found
- 12:26Speaker 1: that news out. So for those not familiar with the
- 12:28Speaker 1: term white label product, it's an item made by one
- 12:31Speaker 1: company and then sold by another company under its own
- 12:35Speaker 1: brand name and logo. So what Mia would have done
- 12:38Speaker 1: is found this product and then just slapped the name
- 12:41Speaker 1: and the logo. Like I'm not saying that the name
- 12:43Speaker 1: isn't great because Slickstick, it's a great name. The branding
- 12:46Speaker 1: has been excellent. So not trying to take away from
- 12:49Speaker 1: what Mia has done, but it's not like she has
- 12:51Speaker 1: created the product from scratch herself. Well, the thing is
- 12:54Speaker 1: she actually made this admission on a podcast a couple
- 12:58Speaker 1: of years ago called the Female Founder Podcast. And She
- 13:01Speaker 1: said that she had just $ 500 to her name when
- 13:03Speaker 1: she came across an existing Flyway product on Alibaba that
- 13:08Speaker 1: was being marketed out of Korea. She ordered it, liked
- 13:11Speaker 1: it and decided it was a product she wanted to launch.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Let's take a listen to more of what she said. I, at.
- 13:17Speaker 3: The time, you know, started the business with about $ 500
- 13:19Speaker 3: to my name and I couldn't afford mass production. So
- 13:24Speaker 3: I bought the product as a white label product. I
- 13:27Speaker 3: got the local printing company to make me some labels
- 13:29Speaker 3: and I was hand labeling.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Every single bottle.
- 13:32Speaker 3: That just went to buying stock off Alibaba. We're talking
- 13:36Speaker 3: like probably the lowest quality.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Any cute packaging or are you just sending that out?
- 13:41Speaker 3: It was just a black bottle that had an existing
- 13:43Speaker 3: white label logo on it. I got a label printed,
- 13:46Speaker 3: like I said, and wrapped over the top. And yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 3: people were loving it and it was selling really well.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I think it's important to look at what she said
- 13:55Speaker 1: with a 2020 lens. A lot of people were building
- 13:59Speaker 1: brands from white label products. I mean, look at the Udi.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Like a lot of people were sourcing products off Alibaba
- 14:06Speaker 1: and having a lot of success with it. I mean,
- 14:08Speaker 1: of course, over the years, Mia has scaled the brand up.
- 14:11Speaker 1: She uses a unique formula now. It's tailored to the brand.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I do find it strange, though, to be so outraged
- 14:17Speaker 1: and accuse other businesses of stealing your ideas when she
- 14:20Speaker 1: has admitted to not being the original manufacturer of this product.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I understand that this started off as a white label product,
- 14:26Speaker 1: but it sounds like she has gone down the path
- 14:29Speaker 1: to trademark it or elements of it. So is it
- 14:33Speaker 1: the name Slick Stick that she thinks Booth has infringed on?
- 14:36Speaker 1: She hasn't flat out called them out about the name.
- 14:38Speaker 1: She hasn't been specific about which areas of trademarking she
- 14:42Speaker 1: thinks that they've infringed. When you do look at trademarking
- 14:45Speaker 1: as a whole, it obviously protects the brand's distinctive elements.
- 14:48Speaker 1: So they're the things that help people recognize a brand
- 14:51Speaker 1: and tell it apart from its competitors. In this case,
- 14:55Speaker 1: for the Slick Stick, it would be things like the
- 14:57Speaker 1: particular shape of the wand and the logo. And as
- 15:00Speaker 1: you touched on, Kate, the name. Booth has been very
- 15:03Speaker 1: careful when it comes to the name of the product.
- 15:05Speaker 1: They've avoided using the exact phrase Slick Stick anywhere in
- 15:09Speaker 1: their promotion of it. It's called the Hairmaster Slicking Stick. So,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I mean, they've been careful. They're calling it a slicking
- 15:15Speaker 1: stick as opposed to a slick stick. Slick and slicking
- 15:18Speaker 1: are pretty similar. Yeah, but it's the Hairmaster. I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 1: using the word slicking instead of slick would have been
- 15:24Speaker 1: a strategic decision to protect themselves legally. The campaign uses
- 15:28Speaker 1: the word slick, though. Like, slick me one more time.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The thing is, okay, a trademark owner doesn't automatically get
- 15:34Speaker 1: a monopoly over every phrase containing one of their words.
- 15:37Speaker 2: So.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Booth is allowed to use the word slick amongst their advertising.
- 15:41Speaker 1: And I think Booth have been highly descriptive for a
- 15:44Speaker 1: reason when talking about the Hairmaster. The look of the
- 15:47Speaker 1: bottles is also where trademarking can come in. Yes, both
- 15:51Speaker 1: of them are pink, but Booth's lid is ribbed around
- 15:54Speaker 1: the bottle. It's also slightly thicker. The wand is also
- 15:57Speaker 1: a different shape and the logo is completely different. So
- 16:00Speaker 1: I don't know how much of a leg she'd have
- 16:02Speaker 1: to stand on there when it comes to trademarking. When
- 16:05Speaker 1: you do look at the two bottles and the branding,
- 16:08Speaker 1: In my opinion, I don't think customers are likely to
- 16:11Speaker 1: think the products or businesses are connected and get confused
- 16:15Speaker 1: by them. Not to mention the fact that there are
- 16:17Speaker 1: so many other brands that sell a very similar looking
- 16:19Speaker 1: product at the moment as well. Yeah, I mean, Bondi
- 16:22Speaker 1: Boost have their own hair wand, so do Emco Beauty.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So it's interesting that Mia has decided to try and
- 16:28Speaker 1: blast Boof Hair over it. She obviously feels threatened. Or
- 16:32Speaker 1: this is all a marketing stunt from her end to
- 16:34Speaker 1: try and gain a bit of attention off the back
- 16:36Speaker 1: of Indy Clinton and Booth Hare. I mean, if she
- 16:38Speaker 1: does launch legal action against Booth Hare for trademark laws,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I think Booth would have a pretty strong case. They
- 16:43Speaker 1: could simply come back and say, you didn't create the
- 16:46Speaker 1: underlying product. You commercialized an existing product that was already
- 16:50Speaker 1: available from a third party on Alibaba. And I mean,
- 16:54Speaker 1: while this doesn't automatically undermine the trademark, I think it
- 16:58Speaker 1: could substantially undermine the argument that she owns exclusive rights
- 17:02Speaker 1: to this concept. Another important distinction is, of course, the formula.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So Booth's Hair Master ingredients list is very different to
- 17:10Speaker 1: Slick Hair's. And Booth Hair and also TBH have become
- 17:14Speaker 1: renowned for creating very unique formulas. They're very scientifically based.
- 17:19Speaker 1: So I think Rachel Wilden wouldn't be too happy about
- 17:21Speaker 1: these claims. I'm really interested to see if Booth hit
- 17:24Speaker 1: back at her with some sort of clever reel or
- 17:27Speaker 1: if they don't really want to give her any more
- 17:30Speaker 1: visibility or attention. Have a really good day.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh, thank you.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You're welcome. Has gone viral, leaving viewers baffled. Soph, this
- 17:43Speaker 1: is the second time in the space of a week
- 17:45Speaker 1: that we're talking about Eurus. That's right. On our subs,
- 17:49Speaker 1: we discussed UK influencer Saffron Barker's rather unusual pronunciation of
- 17:54Speaker 1: the Greek takeaway. She was calling them gyros. I thought
- 17:57Speaker 1: gyros was something completely different. So basically, Kate, as we
- 17:59Speaker 1: discussed on the subs, this is particularly confusing to us
- 18:01Speaker 1: from South Australia because in South Australia, we are the
- 18:04Speaker 1: only state that spells Eurus, Y-I-R-O-S. Everywhere else they spell
- 18:10Speaker 1: it G-Y-R-O-S. So Saffron saw the word, pronounced it how
- 18:14Speaker 1: she thought it looked like it was said, but it is,
- 18:16Speaker 1: of course, pronounced Uros. The other thing is in other
- 18:18Speaker 1: states they call them kebabs. Yeah, exactly. We did touch
- 18:22Speaker 1: on this in the subs episode. Yeah, because when I
- 18:23Speaker 1: moved to Melbourne for a year, I used to go
- 18:25Speaker 1: and get a kebab from Richmond Street probably every week. And, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I got into a habit of calling them kebabs. But
- 18:32Speaker 1: I don't know, for me, when I think of Uros,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I just think of the ones mum used to make
- 18:36Speaker 1: at home with, like, Greek yoghurt. Yeah, well, I mean,
- 18:38Speaker 1: we're not talking about the pronunciation here for Talia Skane.
- 18:41Speaker 1: She has been pronouncing them correct. But what we are
- 18:43Speaker 1: seeing is a very bizarre influx of Euros-themed TikToks that
- 18:47Speaker 1: are doing very well for her. So she is currently
- 18:50Speaker 1: honeymooning in Europe, and she spent the last week in
- 18:54Speaker 1: Greece to attend a friend's wedding. And I have noticed
- 18:57Speaker 1: that ever since her wedding, she has been pumping the
- 18:59Speaker 1: TikToks out, particularly off the back of her European travels. Well,
- 19:02Speaker 1: she's known for her travels. I remember the poor thing.
- 19:05Speaker 1: actually launched a travel app in 2020 just as the
- 19:08Speaker 1: world shut down and I felt so sorry for her.
- 19:12Speaker 1: It wasn't great timing. Now, the thing is a lot
- 19:15Speaker 1: of these travel videos she's been doing, like she's been
- 19:17Speaker 1: doing hauls and recommendations, they've only been getting between 3,000
- 19:21Speaker 1: to 10,000 views, which isn't great for her because she's
- 19:24Speaker 1: got 118,000 followers on TikTok. They haven't been performing. The
- 19:28Speaker 1: content that is getting cut through is the Eros content
- 19:31Speaker 1: and her love for them. And I think I know
- 19:34Speaker 1: what she's doing and where her strategy is coming from
- 19:36Speaker 1: because it's essentially a low-level thirst trap. So the premise
- 19:41Speaker 1: of this whole Yeros content is a hot girl eating
- 19:44Speaker 1: something messy, not to be gross, like a Eros. It's
- 19:47Speaker 1: deliberately suggestive without being explicit. And you're saying like phallic
- 19:51Speaker 1: shaped as well. Yes. I mean, this sort of content
- 19:53Speaker 1: is encouraging the send-ons. I mean, the comment section of
- 19:56Speaker 1: some of these posts are absolutely wild. And what are
- 19:58Speaker 1: the comments like? Okay, well, I'll get into the first one.
- 20:00Speaker 1: So in her first Eros themed video, which attracted 197,000 views,
- 20:07Speaker 1: She was sitting on the side of the road with
- 20:08Speaker 1: her fiancee tucking into a gyros, like really tucking into it.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Take a shot every time Sophie says gyros. Who's having
- 20:14Speaker 1: gyros tonight? Oh, fuck. I want it. Now, I won't
- 20:17Speaker 1: be feeling myself eating it though. I don't think anyone
- 20:19Speaker 1: wants to see that. Now, she wrote across the video,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I wasn't depressed. I just needed to sit in a
- 20:24Speaker 1: gutter in Greece and eat a gyros. In the next video,
- 20:27Speaker 1: Talia was wearing quite a low cut top while she
- 20:30Speaker 1: was sitting on a couch in an Airbnb and eating
- 20:32Speaker 1: a massive gyros. In the video, she had mayonnaise all
- 20:35Speaker 1: over her lips. And again, she was really hoeing into
- 20:38Speaker 1: this gyros. And the caption said, if work is tough,
- 20:41Speaker 1: just remember you're working so you can get gyros in
- 20:43Speaker 1: Greece in 10 months time. Now, this video attracted 186,000
- 20:46Speaker 1: views and over 2,000 send-ons. And as you can imagine,
- 20:51Speaker 1: the comment section was interesting. Now, one older woman called
- 20:54Speaker 1: Beryl wrote, wouldn't be the first time your mouth's been
- 20:57Speaker 1: covered in white sauce. And Talia actually replied to this comment, writing, facts, Beryl, facts. Wow,
- 21:04Speaker 1: that's a pretty funny response. Yeah, so she's playing into it.
- 21:08Speaker 1: As someone who has watched a lot of Talia Skane's content,
- 21:12Speaker 1: over the years. It's not a new thing for her
- 21:14Speaker 1: to eat seductively on her YouTube channel. I'd also guess
- 21:16Speaker 1: that she has a large male audience considering she posts
- 21:19Speaker 1: a lot of bikini content as well. So that's why
- 21:21Speaker 1: I think she's trying to switch up her content on
- 21:23Speaker 1: TikTok because I don't think she's getting the girls in
- 21:26Speaker 1: that she was hoping to. But why would you want
- 21:27Speaker 1: creepy men getting off to you eating gyros? Like, have
- 21:30Speaker 1: you said important to you? Like, I'd prefer not. Do
- 21:33Speaker 1: you know what I mean? I mean, she's trying to
- 21:34Speaker 1: build a following. So let's not, let's not yuck her yum. So,
- 21:37Speaker 1: I mean, I need to talk about this final gyros
- 21:38Speaker 1: video because it was the most bizarre out of all
- 21:40Speaker 1: of them it's had. 273,000 views. And the video essentially
- 21:45Speaker 1: showed her answering the door to a delivery boy or
- 21:48Speaker 1: delivery man. Look, he wasn't a boy. I've seen the video.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It was a man that was probably older than her,
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'd say, or around the same age. He was dropping
- 21:56Speaker 1: off the Euros and she'd set up the camera in
- 21:59Speaker 1: the hallway to capture this awkward exchange. So in the video,
- 22:03Speaker 1: she was very glammed up. She was wearing white silky
- 22:06Speaker 1: pyjamas that she wore on the morning of her wedding.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Not what I would choose to eat Euros in. No,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you're slopping it everywhere. Well, she had a full face
- 22:12Speaker 1: of makeup on. She'd just gone and got her hair
- 22:14Speaker 1: done at the hairdresser's. This was in preparation for her
- 22:16Speaker 1: friend's wedding. Let's take a listen to the clip because
- 22:19Speaker 1: I don't think I can give it justice. Amazing.
- 22:21Speaker 2: How's it going?
- 22:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Good.
- 22:25Speaker 1: How are you?
- 22:26Speaker 2: Good.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Very excited for this.
- 22:28Speaker 2: You want to eat Euros? Yeah. Why?
- 22:31Speaker 1: I love Euros. You love gyros? Yeah, it's my favourite.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Us Australians, we don't get it like you guys do
- 22:37Speaker 1: all the time.
- 22:37Speaker 2: It's not the same.
- 22:39Speaker 1: You are in Greece, you eat the original gyros. Yeah, exactly.
- 22:45Speaker 1: You come from Australia, yeah?
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 1: If I remember good, your husband is a cool guy
- 22:51Speaker 1: with a full tattoo.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's him.
- 22:54Speaker 1: You have a really good guy.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Oh, thank you.
- 22:57Speaker 1: You're welcome.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Perfect. So, we're ready. Thank you so, so much.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Have a beautiful day.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Take care, yeah? You too. Bye.
- 23:05Speaker 1: You sent this to me and you're like, what the
- 23:07Speaker 1: fuck is this? And I had to pause. I was
- 23:10Speaker 1: making dinner. And I was like, you know, when you're
- 23:12Speaker 1: waiting for something weird to happen, because it just had
- 23:14Speaker 1: a weird vibe. Well, the top comment was from a
- 23:16Speaker 1: guy that said, I usually skip this part, obviously referring
- 23:19Speaker 1: to a porno. And I mean, that's what it felt like.
- 23:22Speaker 1: You could see that the delivery driver clocked that she
- 23:25Speaker 1: was filming. And I wonder if he thought, oh my God,
- 23:28Speaker 1: is she filming an OnlyFans? Am I going to be
- 23:30Speaker 1: part of this OnlyFans? What about with a bit when
- 23:32Speaker 1: she's like, oh, your husband is a cool guy with
- 23:35Speaker 1: face tattoos. Like he's obviously like, Fuck, I'm scared. Like
- 23:38Speaker 1: what is this a trap? And the thing is he
- 23:42Speaker 1: seemed really surprised that she liked Euros. Like when he's like, oh,
- 23:45Speaker 1: you really like Euros, do you? And she's like, yeah,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I love it. And there was just something so flirtatious
- 23:49Speaker 1: about the way that she said it. I have got
- 23:52Speaker 1: a real problem though with someone setting up a camera.
- 23:55Speaker 1: and filming you without your consent, particularly in this moment,
- 23:57Speaker 1: because this guy's eyes are probably lit up. Like, oh,
- 23:59Speaker 1: look at this hot girl getting yours. I'm going to
- 24:01Speaker 1: have a bit of a chat with her. And then
- 24:03Speaker 1: it's like, imagine if he's got a partner seeing this.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Imagine your boyfriend's like, oh, sorry, I'm doing an extra
- 24:08Speaker 1: job delivering food. And then you see this video. Actually,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I came across a video on TikTok today. It was,
- 24:15Speaker 1: it's gone absolutely viral. It's got 7 million views. And
- 24:17Speaker 1: it was someone filming two old women in their car
- 24:21Speaker 1: eating ice cream. I saw that. I felt so bad
- 24:23Speaker 1: for the woman because she took the biggest mouthful, like
- 24:25Speaker 1: she really went for it. Yeah, and someone's like, imagine
- 24:28Speaker 1: just eating an ice cream in your car and not
- 24:30Speaker 1: knowing someone filmed it and went viral. Kate, I'm going
- 24:34Speaker 1: to tell you some of the other comments under this
- 24:35Speaker 1: video because they were quite funny. Someone else said, bro
- 24:38Speaker 1: saw the camera, thought he was going to get a surprise.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Another said, I thought it was going to be like, oh,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I don't have enough money. Is there another way? And
- 24:45Speaker 1: another said, hope you tipped him, to which she replied,
- 24:47Speaker 1: of course. It's funny when you see the creator responding
- 24:51Speaker 1: to comments, but then leaving other ones up. I mean,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I know the whole game of TikTok is to build
- 24:56Speaker 1: engagement and, you know, it probably helps her to leave
- 24:59Speaker 1: those comments. But I want to know, like, what were
- 25:01Speaker 1: her intentions with uploading the clip? Like, was she aware
- 25:04Speaker 1: that that was a vibe it was giving off and
- 25:06Speaker 1: just playing into it? Or is this a girl that
- 25:08Speaker 1: just likes a year off? I definitely think she's weaving
- 25:10Speaker 1: this sort of suggestive content into her TikToks to gain
- 25:13Speaker 1: more followers. The thing is, Obviously, there's a lot of
- 25:16Speaker 1: people that do this type of thing, but it is
- 25:18Speaker 1: a bit of a strange move from Talia Skains because
- 25:20Speaker 1: I feel like she's worked so hard to move away
- 25:23Speaker 1: from the male audience that she attracted once upon a
- 25:26Speaker 1: time when she posted a lot of thirst traps. And
- 25:29Speaker 1: she actually wants to talk to a female audience. I mean,
- 25:31Speaker 1: she's got a YouTube channel. She promotes clothing hauls. So
- 25:35Speaker 1: it seems like a strange move, particularly when you consider
- 25:37Speaker 1: she's just got married. She's been posting a lot of
- 25:39Speaker 1: wedding content. She seems really keen to have a baby soon.
- 25:43Speaker 1: So I imagine she might go down the mummy vlogging channel. Yeah.
- 25:47Speaker 1: But the thing is, these are three videos in the
- 25:50Speaker 1: space of probably 30 videos. So she probably thinks, look,
- 25:53Speaker 1: if I weave a couple here and there, I'm going
- 25:55Speaker 1: to get my numbers up. It's going to look really
- 25:57Speaker 1: good for sponsors. And I mean, it's probably how she
- 26:01Speaker 1: grew her Instagram as well. And she, which she's making
- 26:03Speaker 1: a lot of money off, presumably. This is why I.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Don't fly anywhere because it just confuses me. And I saw,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I literally saw it.
- 26:09Speaker 1: This is how you learn.
- 26:10Speaker 2: You fly. I still don't know where I am. We're
- 26:14Speaker 2: in a country near Australia.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I thought we were on an island. Well, same thing.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Okay. Sophie, can you believe that Michael Finch is now 30?
- 26:26Speaker 1: I don't know where the last couple of years have gone.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I feel robbed of time. Yeah. So he just returned
- 26:31Speaker 1: home after celebrating his milestone birthday in Bangkok. I love
- 26:35Speaker 1: that that seems to be his special place. Like he
- 26:37Speaker 1: is always there filming food content. I'm still patiently waiting
- 26:41Speaker 1: for him to upload a lot of videos from his trip.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Is that still within the blue ball? Ha ha. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: love that. That is my favorite vlog of all time.
- 26:49Speaker 1: OGs will get that reference. So that is when Michael
- 26:52Speaker 1: Finch visited Bali for the first time. That was his
- 26:55Speaker 1: first ever overseas trip. And he had to ask Shani
- 26:58Speaker 1: if they were still in the blue ball, meaning if
- 27:00Speaker 1: they were still in the world. And Shani's like, well, yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: Bali is in the world. So yeah, we are in
- 27:06Speaker 1: the blue ball. I think we should actually insert the clip.
- 27:08Speaker 1: It's too funny not to.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Michael literally just asked the best question. You know how
- 27:13Speaker 2: he's like really good with geography and all of that
- 27:15Speaker 2: good stuff he's like don't film this but can i
- 27:16Speaker 2: ask you a question he said are we like still
- 27:20Speaker 2: in the world like that.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Little blue ball are.
- 27:24Speaker 2: We like there and i'm like well yeah bali is
- 27:29Speaker 2: in earth so here you go you learn something new
- 27:34Speaker 2: every day don't you.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I just thought, no, honest to God, I honestly thought, like,
- 27:39Speaker 1: it was just another island.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Well, we are in another island.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but, like, did we leave the blue ball?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Obviously not. No, because only humans live on Earth.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Now, in Bangkok, which, as you've stated, is in the
- 27:52Speaker 1: blue ball, Michael was there with his friend Georgia, who
- 27:55Speaker 1: seems like she adequately spoiled him. So she did the
- 27:58Speaker 1: whole 30 balloons thing. as well as organise the most
- 28:02Speaker 1: incredible personalised cake I have ever seen. Have you seen it, Sophie?
- 28:05Speaker 2: No.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Oh, it was so cool. It was of him filming
- 28:08Speaker 1: a TikTok in his kitchen and on the kitchen bench
- 28:11Speaker 1: there's all this food. This was a cake. Like it
- 28:13Speaker 1: literally looked like a figurine. Oh, wow. I mean, you
- 28:17Speaker 1: can get some incredible stuff made these days. That sort
- 28:20Speaker 1: of level of cake is almost very of the 2017s though. Yeah,
- 28:24Speaker 1: which is what I enjoyed about it. Now, he ended
- 28:26Speaker 1: up sharing a photo dump from his trip and wrote
- 28:29Speaker 1: 30 pictures so wild, just happy to be here. And
- 28:32Speaker 1: I am so happy that he is still on social
- 28:36Speaker 1: media because of course he made a name for himself
- 28:39Speaker 1: as a OG beauty influencer, but his transformation has been
- 28:43Speaker 1: incredible into this TikTok chef. He's got 2.7 million followers
- 28:47Speaker 1: on TikTok. It's crazy to think that he actually has
- 28:49Speaker 1: more followers now than he did back in the day.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I love him and I just want him to vlog
- 28:53Speaker 1: more and I want to see more about his personal life.
- 28:55Speaker 1: But Again, I think it's probably good for him to
- 28:57Speaker 1: have those boundaries set up as well. It was pretty
- 28:59Speaker 1: interesting to see who commented underneath his birthday post. So
- 29:02Speaker 1: of course, Sharni Grumman left a message. She wrote, the
- 29:05Speaker 1: sweetest man. Skye Wheatley actually left two comments. So she wrote,
- 29:10Speaker 1: happy birthday, baby. Love you. And then she also added,
- 29:13Speaker 1: 30 is the new famous. Now this took me back
- 29:16Speaker 1: because remember, it was at a time when I think
- 29:19Speaker 1: people were starting to get a little bit annoyed with Sharni, Michael,
- 29:22Speaker 1: Lily Brown, the whole friendship group. It was when Sky
- 29:26Speaker 1: seemed to be there more and they were in the US.
- 29:29Speaker 1: That was when they infamously did have a bust up. Yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 1: and they kept being like famous, famous, famous and like
- 29:35Speaker 1: talking all the time in that. On that Cundall voice,
- 29:38Speaker 1: wasn't it? Oh yeah. The Cundall Jenner voice. So I
- 29:40Speaker 1: was going to say the Bindi voice, but everyone still
- 29:41Speaker 1: loves a Bindi bit. Anyway, I thought it was interesting
- 29:43Speaker 1: that she commented because obviously they've had a rift and
- 29:47Speaker 1: recently we spoke about how they were re-following each other
- 29:49Speaker 1: on Instagram. So it seems like things could be moving
- 29:52Speaker 1: towards something a bit more of a public reunion possibly. Well,
- 29:56Speaker 1: we spoke about Lily Brown's wedding last week and what
- 29:58Speaker 1: we didn't touch on was the fact that there was
- 30:00Speaker 1: no influencer click reunion at the wedding. So it seems
- 30:04Speaker 1: like she is no longer friends with the entirety of
- 30:08Speaker 1: the week. Well, Louis the Fly was there, of course.
- 30:11Speaker 1: But he was never really part of that group. Yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 1: and M Davies was there. But as you said, there
- 30:15Speaker 1: was no Sharni, there was no Michael, there was no
- 30:17Speaker 1: Rani Bransby, there was no Sky Wheatley. I never thought
- 30:21Speaker 1: they'd get invited. It was just a pipe dream. But
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think it was probably actually more telling that they
- 30:25Speaker 1: weren't invited to the original wedding because they only had
- 30:28Speaker 1: that wedding so that they could invite friends that couldn't
- 30:31Speaker 1: afford to travel overseas to celebrate. All of them could
- 30:33Speaker 1: afford it. Well, they could, but also it's a bit
- 30:35Speaker 1: of a commitment when you're, you know, if you're not
- 30:38Speaker 1: best friends with the person anymore. Yeah, but they're always
- 30:40Speaker 1: touring around Europe. Shani Grimman's in Europe at the moment.
- 30:42Speaker 1: She could have popped by. Yeah, but I think it
- 30:44Speaker 1: just shows their friendship status. Oh, 100%. Well, I think
- 30:47Speaker 1: that is all we have time for today. Thank you
- 30:49Speaker 1: so much for joining us for this episode. If you
