Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: a pivot is not a failure.
- 0:01[SPEAKER_01]: It is using what you've learned.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's information and then adjusting course, right?
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think a lot of us treat pivot like a consolation prize.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: Well, planet and work.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess I'll do this instead.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the be it till you see it podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor and fitness business coach.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: My friends, action brings clarity, and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: Each week my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: All right, if you listen to part one, you've got some homework done and you sat with, you know, what you're actually done with and you've checked in with your body and you hopefully you got a little more honest with yourself.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: Then a couple days ago and today we're going to do something with that because awareness without a next step is really just.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's a very well-informed stuck place, and I don't want that for you, or as my birthwork coach said, information without integration is constipation, aka stuck, right?
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: So welcome back to beta.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: You see it.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: This is part two of quit versus pivot series.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: And if you didn't listen to part one, what are you actually trying to quit?
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: You should go listen to that one, because this is going to fill a little bit of the ordinary.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just going to be below this in your wherever you're listening to podcasts.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I mean, I mean, if you want, if you're like me and you want to listen to the end first, you totally can't, who might have tell you what to do.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: But today's episode is about a word that changes everything once you understand it and that is pivot.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: And again, some of us don't like that word go a little tired of it, but it's a really good word.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so let's redefine pivot.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start here.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: A pivot is not a failure.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: It is using what you've learned.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's information
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: a consolation prize.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: Well, planet and work.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess I'll do this instead, which is framing that actually keeps you small and a little bit resentful of your own journey as opposed to the reframe, which you can take instead, which is like you're not starting over, you're starting with data.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: So for example,
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: When I first sort of want to run a marathon, I thought, okay, just have to run a long time over and over again.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll be able to run a marathon.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I started doing that.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I started having shin splints and a little bit of hip pain and things like that.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought about quitting.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't want to quit.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: I really want to achieve this goal.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm not, this is, this is at working.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: And so now I have information about what doesn't work, I hired a coach on how to do it and then I ran a marathon and then after I ran that marathon, I discovered that I actually prefer running half marathon because it's easier to stay in shape for half marathon and became a lead half marathon runner and doing things like that, I would not say that becoming a half marathon runner was a consolation prize of being a marathon runner.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, I was able to make a more informed decision about the goals that I have.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was information with
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: It was having a new goal with data on how to do what I want to do versus like, I think I want to do this thing right now, just totally fine.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: But now, when I've started over, we get to start from a new starting line with the data of what to do.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: So every attempt you've made, every version of the plan, the class, the offer, the show,
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: everything you've done on your goal, on a thing, you get to actually get to ask yourself what worked and what drained you, what did people actually respond to?
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: Not on vibes, like on data.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: What about your body felt like it was in resistance before or what about it felt like it was easy and inflow.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: All that information is not waste.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's the research base.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: No one calls it that right, everyone tells us, oh, you just should really do the thing that you set out to do as a bullshit.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: So after every single thing Brad and I do in our business, we sit down and we go, what worked and what didn't work?
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: What did we like?
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: What didn't we like?
- 4:12[SPEAKER_01]: We said 15 minutes, was that enough time?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Do we need 20 minutes?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's all information.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: When you do that for your business, you don't go, oh my God, you didn't know?
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: No, you'll call it a postmortem or an autopsy.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: You call it reflection.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't we do that with our other goals in our life?
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: So let's talk method versus mission.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a filter that I use now, and I want you to use it as much as you want, and you can call whatever you want, because it is simple.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: We talk about this in less and my done with the whole thing or just the way I'm doing it.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: So method versus mission.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm done with the whole thing, that's like a mission.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: If I'm done with the way I'm doing it, that's just the method, right?
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: There's other ways of doing that.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes the mission is still completely right, and the method is what's wrong.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: You still believe in what your outcome is, you're just exhausted with the vehicle you chose to get there.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: I used to write tons and tons of blogs, but this how our businesses got started.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: And now I don't write blogs, I do videos, and then the transcripts become the blog.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I still do long-form content.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't type it all out, right?
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: So method versus mission.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's the schedule you're using.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you said you'll take calls in the evenings, and you want to take calls in the afternoon.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it is the format like mine was.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's who you are doing the thing for.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it is the offer itself, right?
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like as you heard for the last episode, we changed agency.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: We changed the actual offer.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't change what's for.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't change our mission of how we want to help more by doing that we help the studio owners.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: We just changed the offer of how we're going to do that.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: We changed the environment of which we did it in.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not because we didn't love.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: We're doing before we just needed to make a change so that we can sustainably do what we're doing.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: and that's key, right?
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's really important for you to keep it in mind that we'll get to put on the first episode, it's not a failure, it's actually information about where you're at right now.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's the pace you set, right?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: It was listening to something today where this woman really said this 10-week program up and she's okay, here's the program and no embod it and she's like, why don't you buy it?
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I tell you this too long to commit.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: So she did four weeks, and then they did, right?
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: So maybe it's a pace that you set.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's your support system, right?
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you have had the same people on your team, the same coach for a long time, and you love them.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: But they got you as far as they can.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's time to go somewhere else.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's also fine.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: It happens to me too.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get people as far as they can go.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get them to their goal.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: And they're going to need a different support system.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so,
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: If that's true for you, then it's okay, that's the method, right?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's the vehicle, or maybe it's the lack of having a support system, and so you have to get someone to help support you and hold you up.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: Changing any of those, and you might have a completely different relationship with the thing that you're feeling like you should walk away from.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: So instead of quitting, it's a pivot.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: Now, if it's a pivot, how do we make sure that we don't think it has to be a dramatic pivot?
- 7:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because I do think sometimes we think I need to make this bigger announcement about this pivot I'm making.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: I want to take the pressure off because I think that also keeps us stuck longer, right?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: Pivoting does not have to be dramatic.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: You do not need to announce that you're making a total rebrand or below up the whole plan to prove your serious about changing something.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: it can be a small experiment you can dabble and you can give it try.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know how I love messy action, meaning you can try the new version.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: And perfectly you can just give it a little test run before you're sure before it's polished, it helps you at least test the next iteration before you commit to it.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I really do believe in testing because if you make this big grand party about it and then you don't like the new thing, now you're going to feel like you have to pivot
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: You might still have to, but wouldn't it be nice to just do it quietly?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's also easier.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: So I want you to find ways to test your pivot out so you can really ensure that you are making the adjustments that you need so that you can go, yep, this is the correct pivot.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: And actually now that I've done this pivot now, I really have to make these three adjustments.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's great too.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason why stores will open and then they'll have a grand opening six months or even a year later.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's not because they're, oh, we want to sail.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's because they had to get systems in place to make sure that what they were doing and who they were doing it for made sense.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: And it supported what their mission was, right?
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: There are signals, by the way.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: So let's talk a little bit about how to actually tell the difference because I think people asking the most about this signs that it might be time to pivot is that the desire is still alive.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: exhausting.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: So you still want the outcome, but pursuing is what's crushing you.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'll never forget when we first did prophylize in 2016, the way we did it.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: I remember six months in, it wasn't working.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: I was crying and Brad's, well, let's just quit it.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'll even know if you just quit doing it.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: And when he asked me that, I didn't feel free.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: I felt
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: sad.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so I knew that it wasn't letting it stop doing profit applies that I needed to change the vehicle, right?
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: So just how does it feel in your body when you're given permission to not do the thing?
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: If it doesn't feel better, then it's, you know, there's a sign, it's not time to quit.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to pivot, right?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Signs, it might be time to quit.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Actually quit is that the desire
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: you no longer are like going after that thing anymore.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: The cost of staying is just too high.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: Whether it's your time or your health or your relationship or your money, continue or question to abandon yourself to keep doing it like if you, if it means like literally you, who you are as a human being is not gonna be supported.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's time to quit, right?
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I have a friend who's just not being seen for her talents and skills where she's at.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: She's not done, but she's done there.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: Because she's unable to show up fully as herself and how they want her to show up as killing her, right?
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's taking the wonderful sparkle out of her eye.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: So that last part matters more than people give it credit for.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: If staying is something shrinking or silencing your needs or overriding what your body's been telling you,
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: that's not a commitment, that's self abandonment, wearing commitment clothes.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so you got to quit, right?
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a pivot.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's a definite, we got to move in that so we can keep you, who you are and move you somewhere else, right?
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to hand you some signs because I do think science also helps give us permission.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: We like Evans with like data.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: There's cognitive flexibility, the actual ability to adapt and change direction is a strength.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's not inconsistency and it's not flaking us.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I just want you to know that in making changes, it is hard to stick with the change because it requires strength to do that.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so you're not being consistent.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: You're not being flaking.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: It just does take time to get that cognitive flexibility, the actual ability to adapt and change direction.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: So if you start on a new course and your pivot and it starts to go back to where it was, you didn't fail.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: You're not
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: Clarity really comes from sitting still and overthinking every angle my overthinkers is for you.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: It comes from behavioral data meaning you try something, you test it, you adjust, based on what actually happens instead of what you predict it would happen from the couch.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: So Clarity does not come from, I'm here with a crystal ball.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: No, you take some action, you get some clarity.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's in the beginning of the show.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's literally in the intro.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the other piece.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: Just because something feels hard right now does not automatically mean it's wrong.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's emotional reasoning and it's sneaky because hard and wrong almost feel like they're identical in the moment.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the most right things have ever done any of my businesses felt brutally hard for the first months.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm doing something right now that is brutally hard.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: So, lastly I want to say,
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: The container might have expired not the dream.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: So remember, there's quitting and there's pivoting.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes the container we are in is expired.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to give you a picture to carry this with you, because I think it explains the whole series a little bit better than my bullet points ever could.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes the dream is still alive, but the container is expired.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: The vision didn't fall, the version of you who built to two years ago or two months ago.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: simply isn't the version that fits who you are right now or which your life actually looks like that's not a loss that's a growth of asking a new shape that is my example of how we changed agency.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: I am not a flaky person.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't stop with the dream, but I did expire the container.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: My capacity to respond to every single slack message every single day had changed.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: My capacity focus had changed.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: Parameter pause fucked my ADHD and all the things that I did.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I didn't fail.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: I just needed to change the container because the original container I built it on had expired.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: The dream was still there.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: The desire is still there and I'm still doing it.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: Resistance that you're feeling towards a current plan can also be information.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's not automatic stop sign.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: And not every detour you've ever taken was a distraction.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: Some detours were guidance pointing you somewhere you couldn't have found by going straight there.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes any detour is because we need a rest.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes we need detours, we need to get gas.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes we need detours, because there's someone who's supposed to meet.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: So sometimes getting straight to the destination is not the actual best path.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're allowed to honor what something taught you without carrying the whole structure of it forever.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: So here's what I want you to do this week, because we're closing off the series, and if you have questions about this, and we want to do a second part, please let me know where you want me to go with it.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: We can obviously re-pick this back up.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: But I want you to take the thing that you named in part one, the thing that you are not sure whether you want you to quit or pivot.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I want you to run it through a filter.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Am I done with the mission?
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: Am I just done with this method?
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: Am I done with the dream or am I done with the vehicle?
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: If it's the method, I need to pick up the lever, right?
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: I need you to pick is at the pace of the format, the offer, the audience is support, the environment, pick one, and design a small messy experiment you can run the next two weeks.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Not a full build, not a full launch, just a test.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: If it's generally the whole mission, that's okay.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: Give yourself a mission to call it complete and set a failed.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: And let that be enough for now.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: How can you, doesn't angle yourself from it?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: Can you just hit pause?
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so I hope you like the series BeatBabe.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: I hope this gives you some understanding that we can quit, we can pivot.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: It is not actually do we stop doing anything.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's what if I learn?
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: What is this truth?
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: What is this information telling you?
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: Who I am?
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: Where I'm going?
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: What do I desire?
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: What is my dream?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: And what do I need to have around me?
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: What pacing to go out?
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's important to go out.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: So that I can.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: adjust to what is going on and continue to grow as a human being.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: How do I continue to be it till I see it with this information?
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: Information is not judgment.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: It is simply feedback on where you have gone, where you're going, what you want more, what you want less of.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope this series helped to get clear on something that's one on your life.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I would love to hear.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: So tell me something a message you can tag me on Instagram.
