- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Connectivity Without Chaos,
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: the podcast for IT leaders who are done managing networks by guesswork.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: In each episode,
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: we break down the systems,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: strategies,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: and decisions that eliminate the hidden IT tax,
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: so your infrastructure becomes reliable, secure, and built to scale.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Today, we discuss what a chief AI officer actually does and why every enterprise needs one.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And we're diving into this because right now,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, non-engineers in your company are likely building tomorrow's technical debt.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: And you're paying like premium inference costs to let them do it.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, that is the real crisis hidden in the sources for this deep dive.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Everyone is using AI, but almost nobody is actually coordinating it.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: So without a chief AI officer or a CIO,
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: enterprises suffer from, well, what they call atomization.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Atomization.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: So look around your own enterprise right now and you'd probably see that in action, right?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Chances are your marketing team is running some uncoordinated AI hackathon this very minute.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: While engineering is out buying a totally different enterprise license.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, and finance is just building bespoke models in a corner somewhere.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it creates this massive redundancy.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, you do not want every single department buying their own expensive, isolated generators.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So the CIO acts more like a city planner, right?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Building the centralized power grid or like an orchestra conductor.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: That is a great way to look at it.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: They enforce intentional orchestration.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: They look across the business and say, hey,
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: engineering already built an AI asset for this workflow,
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: so let's reuse it instead of buying a whole new platform.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, sure.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: But how does a CIO actually get everyone onto that centralized grid?
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Well, the research points to this two-tier cultural approach.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: It's all about identifying your vanguards and your champions.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Vanguards and champions.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, break that down for me.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: So the vanguards are your pioneers.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: You give them these large inference budgets,
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: take the guardrails off, and just let them do wild DARPA-style experimentation.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Wait, DARPA-style, like at the edges of the technology?
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Exactly, at the absolute edges.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And then, once they figure out what actually works, the champions take over.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So the champions take those proven,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: you know, safe best practices and scale them across your global teams.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: You nailed it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: That is their whole job.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But hold on.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Handing out massive inference budgets for wild experimentation.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: That sounds like just a textbook shadow AI nightmare.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: It really does sound like that, yeah.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, are we just giving people a blank check to bypass IT completely?
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Well, a good CIO actually reframes how we view shadow AI.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Instead of just seeing it merely as a security threat,
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: they use it as a critical diagnostic signal.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: A diagnostic signal.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Like a check engine light.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Basically, yeah.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: If your employees bypass the company-provided tools for some unapproved AI,
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: it tells you something vital.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: That the official tools are inadequate.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Either they are inadequate for their specific problems
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: or you just haven't properly enabled the team to use them.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: But DARPA-style experimentation takes DARPA-style budgets.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Which brings us to, like, the elephant in the room here.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Skyrocketing inference costs.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The whole era of all-you-can-eat AI pricing is totally dead.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Because inference requires processing complex model parameters for every single query.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Which demands massive compute power.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Expensive compute power.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: You simply cannot afford to have employees using massive all knowing models just
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: to like summarize a daily calendar or manage an inbox.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Especially when it's non-engineers throwing endless prompts
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: at those expensive models, which triggers what the sources call the 80% rule.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the 80% rule.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: So AI will generally get about 80% of a complex task right on the very first try.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: But the non-engineer doesn't have the coding expertise to catch the subtle errors in
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: that remaining 20%?
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: So what do they do?
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: They just keep reprompting.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: And every new prompt clutters the AI's context window.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Eventually the model just loses track of the original instructions and starts hallucinating.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So the accuracy degrades to basically a coin flip.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Which leads to this terrifying concept of vibe coding.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: You literally have employees vibe coding apps, right?
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's a nightmare.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Just tweaking prompts over and over until the output merely feels right.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Right, with no security reviews, no architectural plan.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: They are single-handedly building tomorrow's technical debt.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: It is a massive influx of new tech debt.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: But the irony here is actually fascinating.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: How so?
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Well,
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: at the exact same time employees are vibe coding all these new vulnerabilities,
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: we can now deploy advanced AI agents to hunt down
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: and automatically rewrite legacy code.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Wait, really?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: We are aggressively using AI to clean up the very tech debt that AI adoption is creating.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly that.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: It's like deploying a robotic vacuum that meticulously cleans up old dirt,
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: but like continuously leaks oil onto the floor as it drives around.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: That captures it perfectly and managing that paradox is exactly why
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: a CAIO is non-negotiable right now.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that makes total sense.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: But you know,
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: to leave you with a final thought to ponder,
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: even if you can't get the budget to hire a chief AI officer today,
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: look at your existing ranks.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Like finding someone internally.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Do you have a program manager who can step up as an AI spotter right now just
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: to find those hidden workflows that save your team, say, 15 minutes a day?
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Orchestration has to start somewhere.
