- 0:00Father, we do ask you from the bottom of our hearts that You
- 0:04would go before us as we begin a new journey in Your Word.
- 0:10We also want to give you all our thanks that You have consecrated
- 0:16these Friday nights in this ministry to be an Oasis for our
- 0:19souls. That's so many times we've been
- 0:22able to come and be refreshed and to be convicted and to be
- 0:25comforted and to be equipped because your word here is
- 0:30proclaimed and we are not ashamed of it Lord.
- 0:33And so we ask now that you would provide an awareness of the
- 0:37anointing that is promised in first John that anointing within
- 0:41that teaches us the truth and the deep things of God.
- 0:47We we come in faith. Oh God, and we pray that the
- 0:50delivery of this introduction would be Spirit empowered and
- 0:55that our hearts would be prepared to receive everything
- 0:58that you have in store for us this night.
- 1:01Lord, we pray that you would apprehend every wandering
- 1:05thought, every renegade emotion, anything that is outside of your
- 1:09will. We pray that it would come in
- 1:10total alignment with your desire for each of us.
- 1:14We bless you Lord, we give you thanks in advance for what you
- 1:17have planned through your word in our midst, Jesus name, Amen.
- 1:25In 586 BC the Babylonian Empire completely conquered the Kingdom
- 1:32of Judah, and you and I are well aware of the Old Testament in
- 1:38that many places have described to us just how swift and just
- 1:45how dramatic the destruction of Jerusalem was.
- 1:50We also learned a few weeks ago that Babylon completely remove
- 1:57the remaining people in the Kingdom of Judah, with the
- 1:59exception of a few poor people in the prophet Jeremiah.
- 2:04And so we have realized at the closing of Second Kings that
- 2:08God's promise of an expulsion from the Promised Land indeed
- 2:13came to pass, and even the Davidic dynasty was not exempt
- 2:18from it. But along the promises and the
- 2:25warnings of this exile were comforting words through the
- 2:30same messengers of God who constantly reminded this people
- 2:35who are now displaced that their exile into a foreign place was
- 2:41not permanent. It would not remain that way.
- 2:47In fact, the leading prophetic voice of that time, the prophet
- 2:51Jeremiah, gave this wonderful assurance in the middle of his
- 2:57prophetic book. In Jeremiah 29, verse 10, it
- 3:01reads for Thus says the Lord, after the 70 years for Babylon
- 3:07are completed, I will visit you, and I will fulfill my promise to
- 3:14you and will bring you back to this place.
- 3:21That was not the only time Jeremiah reminded the people
- 3:25that this was an act of discipline, but it was not a
- 3:29cancelling of God's covenant. And this prophecy in Jeremiah
- 3:332910 is ranked among the most precise and all of Holy
- 3:38Scripture. It's a remarkable thing that we
- 3:40find in our Bibles. And so paramount was it that
- 3:44when it came to the fulfillment, God has given us two books in
- 3:51great detail to tell us how it all came to pass.
- 3:55And those books are Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 3:59And it's going to be our great privilege to consecrate the next
- 4:03few months to study these books with great attention and
- 4:07excitement. So that's what we're here to do.
- 4:10Now, some might be wondering why, after finishing Second
- 4:13Kings, we're not going to 1st and Second Chronicles because
- 4:16those books immediately follow Second Kings.
- 4:19And the answer is quite simple, if you've been with us through
- 4:211st and 2nd Kings, we have frequently visited the
- 4:25Chronicles right in a way to help complete certain stories
- 4:29and accounts. And so I think it'll be more
- 4:32helpful to revisit First and Second Chronicles at a later
- 4:35time as a series. But for now, we are going to
- 4:40enjoy the book of Ezra. And I invite you to turn there
- 4:45with me, Ezra, chapter 1, because we are going to read a
- 4:50few verses in a moment. But allow me to offer a few
- 4:53introductory thoughts and listen again, if you're here, this is a
- 4:59great time to be at Bible study. It always is a great time, but
- 5:03especially when we start a new book because you get to start
- 5:06fresh and you get to be right at the beginning of a study where
- 5:11you don't get lost if you come later on or you feel like you
- 5:13have to catch up. So really absorb this time and I
- 5:16want to encourage you to be faithful in the coming weeks to
- 5:20actually remain in this journey so that you can fully benefit
- 5:24from it. So a few things to review in
- 5:29terms of background of this book.
- 5:33Ezra and Nehemiah originally are considered a single unit.
- 5:38In fact, that is still the case in the Tanakh, which is the
- 5:40Hebrew Bible. And though in our Bibles they
- 5:43are identified as separate books, they complement one
- 5:47another so well because both of these books cover the return of
- 5:53the Exiles to their country. And the record of this journey
- 5:59back is done so in incredible fashion.
- 6:04Does anyone remember how many deportations it took for the
- 6:09people to be removed from Judah NO33?
- 6:16And interestingly, what we're going to find in our study is
- 6:19that it will actually be three cycles of return from exile back
- 6:26to their homeland. And these waves of return will
- 6:34actually serve as a general yet helpful outline for these texts.
- 6:40So if you're taking notes, this is a good place to put this in
- 6:43your margins or wherever you put your thoughts.
- 6:46The initial wave of return will happen between Ezra chapter 1
- 6:52and Ezra chapter 6, and it will be through the leadership and
- 6:58guidance of a man by the name of Zerubbabel, and we're going to
- 7:02learn more about them in the coming weeks.
- 7:03Zerubbabel, the second group of returnees, is described
- 7:09described in Ezra 7 to Ezra chapter 10, under the direct
- 7:15leadership of Ezra himself. Now here's what's interesting.
- 7:20Ezra is mentioned and introduced to us for the first time in
- 7:24Chapter 7. That's kind of strange, isn't
- 7:28it, since the book is named after him.
- 7:30So in the last three chapters of this book, do we see Ezra taking
- 7:35center stage of the narrative? Now the final cycle, the final
- 7:41round of Return is the entire book of Nehemiah, and it's going
- 7:46to be through Nehemiah's leadership.
- 7:49So the focus really of Ezra now as an overview is going to be
- 7:53studying the first two significant recoveries of the
- 7:58people as they make their way back to their home, rebuild
- 8:03their community and more importantly, reestablish their
- 8:06relationship with the living God.
- 8:09Now let me make another mention here.
- 8:12Those three waves are led by three distinct individuals.
- 8:16And if you look carefully, they're they're all builders in
- 8:21their own way. When Zerubbabel will lead the
- 8:24people in the first wave, his primary responsibility is going
- 8:29to be rebuilding the temple. He's going to lay the foundation
- 8:33of the temple. We're going to look at that in
- 8:34greater detail in the weeks to come.
- 8:37Ezra follows. And when he comes back, he also
- 8:41rebuilds something. Does anybody know what it is?
- 8:46The people he's going to rebuild the people of God, he's going to
- 8:52rebuild their faith. He's going to rebuild their
- 8:54consecration. He's going to rebuild their
- 8:56worship. And finally, Nehemiah will
- 9:00arrive on the scene. And what will he rebuild?
- 9:03The walls. And that observation alone is an
- 9:07encouragement to us because God has his men and women who have
- 9:12their distinct responsibility in building some part of God's
- 9:16Kingdom. You don't have to be in
- 9:19leadership. The leaders are very, very
- 9:22paramount in this narrative. You don't have to be a leader to
- 9:26play some part in contributing to the fortification, to the
- 9:31sanctification, to the effectiveness of God's purposes
- 9:35on the earth. Now, with this in mind, perhaps
- 9:40you are wondering if Ezra is introduced to us in Chapter 7,
- 9:44why is this book named after him?
- 9:47And that's a good question. And the answer beyond Jewish
- 9:52tradition attributing it to him, is that there is wonderful
- 9:55internal evidence that shows us that he is indeed the author of
- 9:59it. So generally, Ezra is written in
- 10:03the third person, but a shift takes place once you come to
- 10:06Chapter 7. Let's go there quickly.
- 10:08Look at Chapter 7 and verse 27 with me.
- 10:10I'll wait for you to turn there. Ezra 727.
- 10:20Here's what we read. Blessed be the Lord, the God of
- 10:24our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of
- 10:28the king, to beautify the House of the Lord that is in
- 10:31Jerusalem, and who extended to me his steadfast love before the
- 10:38king and his counselors, and before all the King's mighty
- 10:41officers. I took courage for the hand of
- 10:45the Lord. My God was on me, and I gathered
- 10:48leading men from Israel to go up with me.
- 10:53So now we're we're seeing it in the first person.
- 10:56And this isn't the only place where this happens.
- 10:57It actually reappears. Excerpts in the first person
- 11:01will show up following Chapter 7 all the way to chapter 10.
- 11:06So we're left with only two options concerning the author of
- 11:09this book. You either have an anonymous
- 11:11author who is, you know, just telling and recording what took
- 11:16place historically and then included Ezra's personal
- 11:20memoirs, or you have Ezra, who is indeed the one who penned
- 11:25this book. And once the narrative shifts to
- 11:27his inclusion and his leadership in this return speaks in the
- 11:31first person. And that's what we believe that
- 11:33Ezra indeed wrote this. In fact, Ezra seems to have more
- 11:38authorship real estate in the Bible than one might actually
- 11:41think. If indeed we do conclude that
- 11:45Ezra wrote this, then we can actually say that he penned
- 11:48First and Second Chronicles. Why would we say that?
- 11:53Because the way Second Chronicles ends the last verses
- 11:57is virtually identical to how Ezra begins, almost word for
- 12:01word. And that alone may showcase to
- 12:04us that the same writer was involved in both works.
- 12:07And I encourage you to compare those texts at your own time
- 12:11later. Now, there's so much more that
- 12:13we can say about the background of this book, but I want to
- 12:15transition with this final question, and it's an important
- 12:18one. Is there an overarching theme to
- 12:22the book of Ezra? There usually is with every
- 12:26book, and there are more than one.
- 12:29But I want to say that one of them jumps out at us at the very
- 12:33opening of this book. The very first verse, actually.
- 12:38So let's read it together in verse one, Ezra 1.
- 12:41Verse one reads in the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia,
- 12:48that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be
- 12:51fulfilled. The Lord stirred up the spirit
- 12:54of Cyrus king of Persia so that he made a proclamation
- 12:58throughout all his Kingdom and also put it in writing.
- 13:02Look at that sentence there, that the word of the Lord by the
- 13:06mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled.
- 13:08That is a major emphasis in this remarkable historical account.
- 13:14Whatever God says he will do, he will do.
- 13:18So the fate, the faithfulness of God is, is very much a filter at
- 13:23the outset of this text. And it's not only seen here in
- 13:27God actually accomplishing the hopeful message that Jeremiah
- 13:30proclaimed. You will be there for 70 years,
- 13:32but you will come back. That's the word that's going to
- 13:35be fulfilled. It is interwoven throughout this
- 13:39book in micro testimonies where we see little stories and
- 13:43anecdotes and we realize over and over it's compacted how God
- 13:47is reliable, He is trustworthy, and what he says He will
- 13:52actually do. And He's never late.
- 13:56And I'm eager to discover these insights.
- 13:58I'm, I'm so looking forward to see what every chapter has to
- 14:03offer us. But with the plan tonight, we're
- 14:07actually going to just stay in verse one, Ezra one, verse 1.
- 14:14And I, I think and I hope and I pray really that by the end of
- 14:17the study you will see why that is valuable not to rush.
- 14:21I mean, it's only a few chapters.
- 14:23This, this study is not going to be very long.
- 14:24At least I don't anticipate it to be very long.
- 14:28But we can't rush what we see here in the very first words of
- 14:34this book. So here's what we're going to
- 14:37do. Verse 1 is going to serve as a
- 14:38launching pad to other Scriptures, but I want us to
- 14:42read down to verse 4 just to get a more complete picture, and
- 14:44then we will do what we are here to do.
- 14:47Let's read again in verse one in the first year of Cyrus, king of
- 14:50Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah
- 14:53might be fulfilled. The Lord stirred up the spirit
- 14:56of Cyrus, king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation
- 15:00throughout all his Kingdom and also put it in writing.
- 15:03Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia, The Lord, the God of heaven, has
- 15:07given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to
- 15:10build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
- 15:13Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him,
- 15:18and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild
- 15:21the House of the Lord, the God of Israel.
- 15:24He is the God who is in Jerusalem, and that each
- 15:27survival in whatever place he soldiers be assisted by the men
- 15:30of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with
- 15:33beasts, besides free will offerings for the House of God
- 15:37that is in Jerusalem. The first thing that should
- 15:41strike you and I is this individual that we are
- 15:45introduced to by the name of Cyrus, who is the king of
- 15:48Persia. What does the Kingdom of Persia
- 15:53and its ruler have to do with the people of God who are
- 15:57supposedly trapped in Babylon? The answer should be clear to us
- 16:05that while the people were in exile, the Kingdom of Persia
- 16:11replaced Babylon as a superpower in the ancient Near East.
- 16:15There's been a shift of governance.
- 16:17There has been a transfer of power.
- 16:20Babylon no longer is the dominating force, it is Persia.
- 16:26In fact, all the events in Ezra and Nehemiah take place under
- 16:30the Persian government. This is a significant change,
- 16:34one that is detailed to us in the book of Daniel chapter 5.
- 16:38You remember that is precisely where we see this shift taking
- 16:42place and history accounts to the reality of this.
- 16:46It's an actually amazing thing to compare what we find here in
- 16:49the Bible and archaeological discoveries.
- 16:54But there's something DP here for us.
- 16:57Looking at Cyrus, king of Persia here in Ezra and Daniel and
- 17:00other mentions offers more than just how the Bible is
- 17:03historically accurate. Here's what I want to propose to
- 17:06you tonight. If you and I actually gather
- 17:09everything the Bible has to say about Cyrus, then we will
- 17:14actually come to the place of having one of the strongest
- 17:17arguments for the divine authorship of the Bible.
- 17:22In other words, if someone were to ask me why do you believe
- 17:26that the Bible is divinely inspired, one of my answers
- 17:31would be, and I don't say this was an exaggeration, I mean it.
- 17:35I would respond with, have you ever considered what the Bible
- 17:39has to say about one of Persia's most notable kings?
- 17:45Here's what I mean. Long before Jeremiah prophesied,
- 17:49when the people of God were returned to Babylon or or
- 17:53Jerusalem, he actually had another prophet explain and
- 17:59predict how it would happen. And that's where we need to go.
- 18:05Isaiah, Isaiah 44. And look with me at the very
- 18:09last verse, Isaiah 44, verse 28. You can't afford to miss this.
- 18:20This has massive implications for the veracity of the Bible.
- 18:25Isaiah 44, verse 28, Who says of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and he
- 18:37shall fulfill all my purpose. This is God speaking, saying of
- 18:42Jerusalem, she shall be built another temple, your foundation
- 18:48shall be laid. The prophecy continues in
- 18:50chapter 45. Let's look at verse one.
- 18:53Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right
- 18:58hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him, and to loose
- 19:02the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may
- 19:07not be closed. I will go before you and level
- 19:11the exalted places. I will break in pieces the doors
- 19:14of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
- 19:17I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hordes in
- 19:21secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God
- 19:25of Israel, who call you by your name.
- 19:28For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I
- 19:32call you by your name. I name you, though you do not
- 19:36know me. To truly grasp how astounding
- 19:40this prophecy is, you and I have to understand the timing of it.
- 19:46There is no dispute that this was compiled.
- 19:51This prophecy was given close to 200 years before Cyrus was even
- 19:57born. Do you understand what we have
- 20:00in our hands here? One of the most accurate and
- 20:03robust prophecies in all of Scripture and all of Scripture.
- 20:09Now let's try to let's try to understand the magnitude of
- 20:14this. It would be like, just imagine
- 20:16with me now, a pastor living in the days of George Washington
- 20:20and this credible minister boldly proclaims on public
- 20:24record for the whole nation to hear there is a president coming
- 20:30by the name of George W Bush, who became president nearly 200
- 20:35years after Washington. That's why I'm using it.
- 20:39There is a new leader who will arise by the name of George W
- 20:44Bush, and not only does he name him by name, but he actually
- 20:46explains what he will accomplish in his administration that will
- 20:52actually bring about historical significance, a shift in
- 20:56nations. What would that sound like for
- 21:02those who would hear such a prediction?
- 21:06It would be astounding. It would be amazing.
- 21:11And for such a thing then to come to pass, well, it's, it's
- 21:17hard to imagine what would transpire after that.
- 21:21But that is the kind of precision foresight we're
- 21:24dealing with an Isaiah's prophecy here.
- 21:26This is not vague at all. It's naming names.
- 21:30It's actually foretelling what's going to happen on a global
- 21:34scale. History to this day can't ignore
- 21:39it. And this is something for us to
- 21:42consider. And we have to look at this
- 21:45prophecy more carefully because the more familiar we've become
- 21:47with it, the more confidence that we will have concerning the
- 21:51validity of the Word of God. And I'm sure the the greater
- 21:54your boldness will be in your preaching to the lost.
- 21:58So let's look at this. Let's come back to chapter 45 of
- 22:01Isaiah. Look carefully, verse one thus
- 22:04says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus.
- 22:08So Isaiah's prophecy is not just about Cyrus, it's a message for
- 22:13him. It's to Cyrus, it's to this man
- 22:17who is anointed. Now think about that.
- 22:21Who was anointed in Israel? Kings, prophets, priests.
- 22:27It's very rare where you have somebody who's a Gentile outside
- 22:31of the confines of Israel who is told to be anointed.
- 22:34Well, it's happening here. So this was something not just
- 22:39for Israel to know about, though.
- 22:40That's my main point. It's something for Cyrus somehow
- 22:44to encounter. And it is widely believed that
- 22:49Daniel was the prophet who exposed Cyrus to this prophecy.
- 22:55That's what Jewish tradition claims.
- 22:57And it's not so far fetched because we learned in the book
- 22:59of Daniel that he knew Cyrus personally.
- 23:02And more than that, we know that Daniel had copies of the
- 23:07Scriptures. He had prophecies at his
- 23:11disposal, did he not? How do we know that in Daniel 91
- 23:14and two, while Daniel is in exile, while Daniel lived
- 23:19through these transfer of governance, he says, I Daniel
- 23:24perceived in the books the number of years that according
- 23:27to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet.
- 23:31What is he saying? I perceived in the books He had
- 23:35books he was studying. And we have great reason to
- 23:41believe that Daniel was very bold in the palace, that with
- 23:45his great influence, he made known the truth of God.
- 23:50And so it would not be a stretch to say that somehow, someway,
- 23:56Cyrus was exposed to this scroll, to this message.
- 24:03It came to him eventually. Now, whether or not Daniel was
- 24:06the means by which Cyrus came to know this divine message, Ezra
- 24:10confirms that he was aware of it.
- 24:12We read that earlier. We'll see it again at the
- 24:14closing of the study. What we do know for certain is
- 24:18the essence of the message. Like Cyrus did What?
- 24:22What's the summary of this? The whole purpose of this
- 24:26prophecy is that once Cyrus is born, once he's raised up, once
- 24:33he accomplishes amazing things, he would realize the God of
- 24:40Israel has always known me, and He is the reason for my success
- 24:45and my exaltation. This was to humble this man.
- 24:51This was to move this man. This was for Cyrus to be
- 24:54introduced to the true God. And I want you to imagine the
- 24:58impact of coming across the writings of a prophet from a
- 25:02different land who lived 180 to 200 years before you.
- 25:07And in those records, your name shows up and your greatest
- 25:14achievement in life has been predicted and fulfilled.
- 25:19That's huge. That's massive.
- 25:23And as personal as this account is, it conveys A broader truth,
- 25:29one that would have challenged the hearts of the Jewish people
- 25:32and stir the hearts of Gentiles at the same time.
- 25:36What is it that God's compassion, God's power are not
- 25:40limited to Israel. He works beyond those borders.
- 25:48He actually can deal with the hearts of those who have no
- 25:53understanding, no relation, no access to what Israel had.
- 25:59And so yes, this, this prophecy, it profoundly displays the
- 26:03sovereignty of God over kings and over lands.
- 26:07But you can't miss the personal ambition in it.
- 26:12Is God flexing His ultimate power over all things?
- 26:16Is knowledge of all things? Yes.
- 26:18But to what end? What's the goal?
- 26:22Well, I want to make a case here so that people would not only be
- 26:26introduced to including Cyrus, but that they would actually
- 26:29know him, That they would be so moved by how this God has gone
- 26:33out of his way to make himself real that they would then pursue
- 26:38him in an intimate way. Look back at Isaiah 45.
- 26:42Let's look here at verse 5. The Lord continues in verse
- 26:46five. I am the Lord, and there is no
- 26:48other besides me. There is no God.
- 26:51I equip you, though you do not know me.
- 26:53He's still speaking to Cyrus, but notice what he says in verse
- 26:566, that people may know from the rising of the sun and from the
- 27:02West that there is none besides me.
- 27:06I am the Lord, and there is no other.
- 27:09Highlight those words in the beginning of verse 6 that people
- 27:11may know. I want people to know me, and
- 27:17I'm going to call out a man who's not even born, that
- 27:20doesn't even exist. I'm going to write out how he
- 27:25actually is going to take over the world so that when those who
- 27:30in his lifetime and beyond realize it, they would
- 27:33understand that I am the true God.
- 27:35No other deity can do this and that.
- 27:38From that place they would know me in a real way, in a saving
- 27:44way. Can it really be?
- 27:47Can it really be that this God who has proven that He knows
- 27:52every detail of the future, who can even tell us in advance
- 27:56about it in writing, wants all people, no matter your
- 28:02background, no matter your race, no matter your education level,
- 28:04no matter anything, to know Him? And yes, it is true.
- 28:10And in case you doubt that there is a personal element to this,
- 28:13look down a little bit further than verse 9, Isaiah 45, verse
- 28:169. Woe to him who strives with him
- 28:21who formed Him a pot among earthen pots.
- 28:26Does the clay say to him who forms it, What are you making?
- 28:30Or your work has no handles. So what's happening here?
- 28:35This is the Lord's way of reminding the reader how futile
- 28:38it is for anyone to resist the future predicting, nation
- 28:44shifting God. Woe to you.
- 28:49Woe to you if you actually try to raise your fist against this
- 28:52God. That's what he's saying here.
- 28:53But there is an application contextually that speaks deeper
- 29:00to the heart. It's almost as though this verse
- 29:03is saying, why would you oppose this God who again, has gone out
- 29:08of his way to provide a record of Him predicting the future
- 29:15with specifics, and at the same time is inviting you to embrace
- 29:21Him and to enjoy him and to walk with Him.
- 29:24Why would you do that? And maybe that's a question for
- 29:26some people here or who are going to listen to this in the
- 29:29future. Can I ask you something, please?
- 29:32If you're skeptic in this place, welcome.
- 29:34But let me speak to your heart. What do you do with a prophecy
- 29:37like this? What do you do about this actual
- 29:40foretelling of a man named Cyrus 200 years before he existed?
- 29:43What do you do with that? Do you just ignore it?
- 29:46Do you just scoff at it? Are you not at least intrigued
- 29:49to explore further? Like, do you, do you not
- 29:52comprehend the potential ramifications, the consequences
- 29:57if this conclusions is indeed true?
- 30:01Where do you go with this? You just move on and grab a late
- 30:05night snack After a study like this, what do you do?
- 30:09I'll tell you what many have done because I wanted to know
- 30:12what atheists and agnostics have done with this prophecy and I
- 30:17wasn't surprised. Unfortunately, many refused to
- 30:21believe that Isaiah appendix before the time of Cyrus and
- 30:28doubters of the divine inspiration of God's word say
- 30:31Isaiah must have wrote this after Cyrus came on the scene.
- 30:37And you'll even have liberal theologians who will claim that
- 30:39how convenient, how convenient. It's a sad thing what people
- 30:46will do. And if that is you, this verse
- 30:48in verse 9 is actually for you. Woe to him who strives with him,
- 30:54who formed him. You were fighting against God.
- 30:57You were intentionally resisting Him.
- 30:59You were suppressing the truth. What more does God need to do to
- 31:05prove that this book is from heaven?
- 31:10Well, there's one more thing I'd like for us to take away from
- 31:12this prophecy, and it's something that concerns the
- 31:15people of God specifically. Look again at verse 4 of Isaiah
- 31:1945. God says for the sake of my
- 31:22servant Jacob and Israel, my chosen, I call you by your name.
- 31:28I name you, though you do not know me.
- 31:32So OK, we we know that the Lord wants to reveal himself to all
- 31:35people through this prophecy, but he actually now focuses in a
- 31:39little bit more and he actually says Cyrus, the reason why I'm
- 31:42doing this also is because I have my people in mind.
- 31:48Here's a lesson God's sovereign governance over the rise and
- 31:53fall of nations, the promotion and demotion of rulers, even the
- 32:01rewriting of laws according to this is always tied to the
- 32:06growth and the formation of his own people always.
- 32:14You know, history reveals that when Cyrus actually made this
- 32:17edict, I'm talking about secular history, there's actually a
- 32:21cylinder that's been discovered, it's in the British Museum
- 32:24called the Cyrus Cylinder. It's this clay kind of vase
- 32:27looking thing with inscriptions on it and actually speaks to and
- 32:31speaks of what we find here in Ezra 1.
- 32:34It's a different vantage point, but it confirms what we find
- 32:36here. And what we discover there is
- 32:39that Cyrus actually made a proclamation to many displaced
- 32:45nations, and he actually makes an invitation for all peoples to
- 32:49return back to their homeland. This was a political strategy.
- 32:52It was for him to stabilize the region, to win favour within his
- 32:55empire. And so to the natural eye, what
- 32:59you would have seen is, you know, this is just a human
- 33:02rights policy. This is just, you know, a king
- 33:05who's just a rose to power. And he, he just wants to kind of
- 33:09introduce himself on the right path, right footing.
- 33:12And so he just says everybody can go back home.
- 33:14You go back to your gods, you go back to your families, you go
- 33:16back to your land. But what is God's word reveal?
- 33:20Here's what it reveals. This looks like maybe just a
- 33:25benevolent man, a shrewd man, you know, just implementing
- 33:31political strategy. But instead, it was all guided
- 33:34by God with his covenant people and focus.
- 33:41All of this, all of this movement is orbiting around the
- 33:44well-being of his own people. And you and I always have to
- 33:52remember that as a Church of Jesus Christ beneath everything
- 33:56that is happening. Listen, in this very city, in
- 34:00this nation, across the globe, what you have to remember is
- 34:04that God is orchestrating every piece in order to ultimately
- 34:11listen to this position. His church in a manner where she
- 34:14will be sanctified and most effective for His purpose.
- 34:22I'm not sure if we believe that, but here's a text to remind us
- 34:24of it. As followers of Jesus Christ,
- 34:27God has not changed. Yes, this is the old covenant.
- 34:31Israel was in focus. We are in the new covenant.
- 34:34We are the Church of Jesus Christ, Jew and Gentile
- 34:37combined. As one new man, has God changed?
- 34:40No, he's not. In fact, what we learn here is
- 34:45that the Lord will accomplish such purposes even through kings
- 34:50like Cyrus who don't know God, and yet will use such a man to
- 34:55display and shower favor towards his people.
- 34:59But listen, that truth remains, even if governments are unjust
- 35:06and cruel towards God's own. And one of my favorite examples
- 35:10of this is something that we covered briefly a couple
- 35:13conferences ago. It's in Acts 18.
- 35:16Let's be reminded of that. I want you to see it again in
- 35:19Acts 18, verse one. This is when Paul left Athens
- 35:22and went to Corinth. Look at this example once again,
- 35:27Acts 18, verse one and verse 2. Here's a New Testament example.
- 35:33After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth, and he found a
- 35:38Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy
- 35:46with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the
- 35:50Jews to leave Rome and he went to see them.
- 35:56What if I'm fascinating about this tax is that the Holy Spirit
- 35:59could have simply told us that Paul met this couple, but he
- 36:02doesn't just do that. He chooses to inform us how he
- 36:04met Aquila and Priscilla. How did it happen?
- 36:07You know how it happened? It was through an anti-Semitic
- 36:10law. It was through the ruler there
- 36:14in Rome who banished all Jews from the country.
- 36:19Now put yourself in their sandals for a second.
- 36:22Imagine that one day you get a knock at your door from
- 36:26officials saying you have to leave.
- 36:28You have to leave your business, you have to walk away from your
- 36:31family. You have to abandon your church
- 36:33for something that you can't even control.
- 36:35How disorienting is that? How?
- 36:38How frustrating would that be? I mean, who are you going to
- 36:40call? The police?
- 36:41The police is escorting you out. So you can imagine the tension,
- 36:46you can imagine the anger, you can imagine the sadness, you can
- 36:48imagine the tears. They have no choice.
- 36:52You're being uprooted. And yet it's this very edict
- 36:58from a secular, God hating Pagan government that would serve as
- 37:01the catalyst for this couple to meet the apostle Paul in Corinth
- 37:08and from there to form a relationship that would bless
- 37:11the early church. In fact, you know this very
- 37:17well. This couple is one of the most
- 37:18esteemed in all of the New Testament and they became one of
- 37:22Paul's closest companions. Where did it all begin?
- 37:25The Holy Spirit tells us, Claudia is saying, you Jews,
- 37:30you're out of here. We don't want you here.
- 37:35So whether it's a pro Jewish leader like Cyrus or an
- 37:44anti-Semitic rule like Claudius, what do you have the same truth?
- 37:48God is in control. God is in control.
- 37:51He's moving, he's orchestrating, he's he has his people in mind
- 37:54with all of this change with favour or unfairness.
- 38:00And that is something, listen, you have to believe for your own
- 38:02life, especially if you are part of the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 38:07So I really hope we got a taste here of just how significant
- 38:09this man Cyrus was. And I want to encourage you to
- 38:13never hesitate to reference him and to use him in your witness
- 38:19to those who may challenge the reliability of the Bible.
- 38:25Get more familiar with Isaiah 45, put it together with the
- 38:30rest of history and ask somebody who would doubt who it's that
- 38:33Bible is written by man. Yeah, we know that it was
- 38:36written by man. But God moved by the Holy Spirit
- 38:39through these men to give the message that he wanted to give
- 38:42for all humanity. And he moves in history and he's
- 38:45made prophecy about history made known to us so that what all
- 38:50people would know him cyber listen to this.
- 38:52Cyrus has been selected and inscribed in divine revelation
- 38:56for that very purpose so that anybody who would learn about
- 38:59him would realize God is real. God is real.
- 39:05I don't remember the last time I've ever considered using Cyrus
- 39:07in my evangelistic efforts, but here we are now.
- 39:13There's so much more that we can say, but we're going to come
- 39:16back to Ezra one verse one and look at a final thought before
- 39:19we close Ezra one verse one. Let's read it one more time.
- 39:24In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, we learn just a
- 39:28little bit about him. Continues here to say that the
- 39:31word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled.
- 39:34The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia so that
- 39:41he made a proclamation throughout all his Kingdom and
- 39:44also put it in writing. See that phrase there?
- 39:48The Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia.
- 39:52That is very important in our understanding of this section of
- 39:55God's story. As we continue in this series,
- 39:59we're going to see a lot of stirring of spirits in the very
- 40:03chapter. We're going to see in verse 5
- 40:04that God is going to stir the spirits of some of the remnant
- 40:07to return. When it comes to the building
- 40:10project of the temple. God's going to stir the spirits
- 40:12of the leaders of the leaders, including Zerubbabel and those
- 40:15who have followed His lead into Jerusalem.
- 40:20Now, what you can take from this at face value is the obvious,
- 40:24that this just confirms once again that God can influence the
- 40:27hearts of even kings and that he can miraculously work in and
- 40:29through him to accomplish his own purpose, right?
- 40:31We know this, but there's a deeper truth.
- 40:37It's as though Ezra by the Spirit wants us right away the
- 40:40reader to understand that what's about to happen.
- 40:45It's not because necessarily of the goodness of this Pagan king.
- 40:51Cyrus in this moment will be an agent of Judah's renewal, of
- 40:55Judah's healing, unless the people fall into the temptation
- 40:59of giving the credit of their restoration to him.
- 41:04Ezra wants to let us know the true source, the true power at
- 41:08work behind the man who is making it happen, God, the
- 41:15Spirit of God influencing and impressing upon the conscience
- 41:22and the deepest parts of this man.
- 41:24Cyrus, for what reason? So that you and I, including the
- 41:30people that Ezra immediately wrote to, would understand God
- 41:35is the one who's ultimately restoring us.
- 41:40What's the lesson? Here's the lesson.
- 41:42Another theme of Ezra really is about restoration.
- 41:48What we can take from this? Is that true?
- 41:50Restoration can only take place through a work of God.
- 41:57Let me narrow it in. True restoration, that sense.
- 42:02Of contentment in your. Soul, that realization that you
- 42:06actually, you actually can testify.
- 42:09I feel complete. That can only happen.
- 42:16Through God, only God and the. Sooner you and I.
- 42:21Believe that and realize that the quicker we will enjoy and
- 42:28capture the reason why we exist. And the more we doubt.
- 42:34That and entertain other thrills and ideas, the more you'll be
- 42:40disappointed the mending. Of your spirituality.
- 42:45Your identity, your purpose can only be found in him.
- 42:50It was the. Lord, who stirred up the.
- 42:52Spirit of Cyrus, it was the Lord who ultimately is reeling his
- 42:57people back to who they were created to be, you know?
- 43:03What verse came to mind? And here is where we're going to
- 43:06end. The last part of the book of.
- 43:10Lamentations. Lamentations is rarely brought
- 43:13up in churches. It's not an easy book to talk
- 43:16about. It's a book of lament, intense
- 43:18lament. Most people believe it was
- 43:21Jeremiah who wrote it. Very likely so.
- 43:24Jeremiah wrote Lamentations as his personal response to the
- 43:27tragedy of the destruction of Jerusalem.
- 43:30And he says something at the end.
- 43:31It's a Lamentations 521. Notice it with me.
- 43:39Restore us to yourself, O. Lord, that we may be restored,
- 43:46Renew. Our days as of old.
- 43:50You see this you? See how precious this text is?
- 43:54Restore us to yourself. So what?
- 43:57What? For what reason, O Lord, that we
- 44:00may be restored? What's Jeremiah bringing up
- 44:06here? What we're seeing here in Ezra
- 44:08one true completion, healing, renewal, satisfaction, identity,
- 44:15purpose can all be known on the path of reconciliation with God.
- 44:21Reconciliation with God is the sole path to restoration of our
- 44:27true selves. And here's the thing you have to
- 44:29understand. You can have your finances
- 44:31restored, your health restored, your relationships restored on a
- 44:35horizontal level. But if everything is going well,
- 44:37if everything else is intact, if everything else is flourishing
- 44:40but not your relationship with God, you will never be truly
- 44:44restored. Restore us to yourself so that
- 44:48we will be restored. It's exclusively and totally
- 44:52found in God and how you engage with Him.
- 44:56You always be an empty shell, you always be broken, you always
- 45:02be wandering as long as you are not connected to God.
- 45:10This is what we. Find here in the beginning.
- 45:11Of Ezra, true restoration at the very first verse comes from the
- 45:17one who made you and died for you.
- 45:20Lord, we thank you for this brief introduction.
- 45:24We bless your holy name. Lord, we have indeed tasted the
- 45:30goodness of your truth, and we are longing to continue in it
- 45:35until then. Lord, may these things that we
- 45:37have heard marinate in our hearts, may seep the deepest
- 45:42parts of who we are. And may truly translate into.
- 45:47Transformation, Lord, we. Now respond to your voice.
- 45:55And we acknowledge that you, who know all things and can do all
- 45:59things, strangely desire us. You actually delight in us that
- 46:12for those who are broken hearted.
- 46:15Who are weary and heavy. Laden.
- 46:18You have the remedy for it, and you invite us to.
- 46:21Yourself. So Lord for the person.
- 46:24Here, who thinks that? That fantasy?
- 46:28Is going to satisfy. Them that those drugs and
- 46:33supplements are going to soothe them that.
- 46:37Buying the latest clothes? And putting on this kind of
- 46:40makeup is going to make them feel fulfilled and beautiful.
- 46:46Lord, if you. Were not.
- 46:48In the equation of us being saved and us being satisfied,
- 46:53please rescue us from our own deception.
- 46:59And help us remain with you. Because true restoration.
- 47:03Is in you alone. We give you thanks for this
- 47:05truth and these reminders. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
- 47:10Let's stand. Let's worship the God who called
- 47:14a man named Cyrus and knows your name and mine.
