- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, coach, coming off of hockey this weekend. Played
- 0:04Speaker 1: U Mass Friday, UMSS Little Saturday, bounced back overtime victory
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hudston Shander with the game winner. Midweek matchup Wednesday night game,
- 0:13Speaker 1: last non conference game of the season. Just want to
- 0:15Speaker 1: get your thoughts heading into this Alaska Anchorage game.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we've played. I think this will be five games
- 0:22Speaker 2: and ten days for us, So we've had a big
- 0:25Speaker 2: stretch of hockey here and we certainly want to finish
- 0:30Speaker 2: it off I think the right way before we go
- 0:32Speaker 2: into a little nine to ten day break. So it's
- 0:37Speaker 2: going to be a really important game for us. And
- 0:40Speaker 2: we played these guys two years ago in a very
- 0:42Speaker 2: similar situation and the game went to overtime. So I
- 0:47Speaker 2: have that most respect for the way Matt runs his program.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And the Alaska Anchorage team that's going to be coming
- 0:55Speaker 2: in here is going to be a formidable opponent for
- 0:57Speaker 2: us on Wednesday night, And just like many of the
- 1:02Speaker 2: other teams we played during the season, you know, we're
- 1:06Speaker 2: going to have to be really sharp and at our
- 1:08Speaker 2: best if we want to obtain the result that we
- 1:12Speaker 2: expect to and.
- 1:16Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:18Speaker 2: How we want to finish this five game stretch, that's
- 1:21Speaker 2: for sure.
- 1:24Speaker 3: All right, we'll open up for questions. Show you can
- 1:26Speaker 3: start us off.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Thanks, good morning, calv. Too bad you couldn't put down
- 1:29Speaker 4: a way drave the Super Bowl. You'd be a richer
- 1:32Speaker 4: man today, right, I told you the Eagles, I know,
- 1:36Speaker 4: I know wise man physically coming through a stretch like
- 1:42Speaker 4: this where you play practice, play, practice play, seemingly, what's
- 1:47Speaker 4: the most important thing guys have to do to just
- 1:50Speaker 4: stay on top of your game.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I think they have to get rest and take care
- 1:57Speaker 2: of themselves away from the rink.
- 2:00Speaker 5: You know.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I try to put myself in their shoes. When I
- 2:02Speaker 2: was in college. It's not always the easiest thing to do.
- 2:05Speaker 2: You get caught sometimes staying up late watching games or whatnot,
- 2:10Speaker 2: just shooting the breeze with your roommates, and next thing
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, it's twelve thirty one o'clock and you're got
- 2:15Speaker 2: to get up at eight the next morning. So the
- 2:18Speaker 2: biggest thing for me is that they're getting proper rest
- 2:20Speaker 2: and they're taking care of themselves.
- 2:23Speaker 4: When you look at the whole of what's going on
- 2:28Speaker 4: this year, your freshmen have performed really, really well. Obviously,
- 2:33Speaker 4: you recruited them with confidence they could do that. But
- 2:36Speaker 4: have they even kind of exceeded expectations.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Well, just you know, to some extent, you never know
- 2:42Speaker 2: what you're going to get.
- 2:44Speaker 5: From freshmen. Even some of the.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Really terrific players I've coached in the past that have
- 2:51Speaker 2: gone on to have great NHL careers, you know, like
- 2:55Speaker 2: a Nathan Gerby or Cam Atkinson, they only had eight
- 2:58Speaker 2: goals nine goals as freshmen.
- 3:00Speaker 5: You know. Now they had thirty goal seasons too before
- 3:04Speaker 5: they turn pro.
- 3:05Speaker 2: But coming in as a freshman, it's a it's an
- 3:08Speaker 2: adjustment in a lot of different ways, and I think
- 3:12Speaker 2: our guys have handled it exceptionally well.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And it seems like Viking is starting to find his
- 3:19Speaker 4: sea legs as far as offensively is concerned, the same
- 3:22Speaker 4: as the same as Nick. They both seem to be
- 3:24Speaker 4: getting a lot more pucks on goals. What have you
- 3:27Speaker 4: seen from them as far as becoming more offensive defenseman?
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think they've been somewhat consistent this
- 3:35Speaker 2: year getting pucks down in the net. That's certainly, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: point of emphasis for us in the offensive zone when
- 3:43Speaker 2: the puck gets kicked from low to high to the defenseman.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We want to be able to get those pucks down
- 3:48Speaker 2: to the net. You got to get it past that
- 3:49Speaker 2: first wave, and those two have been doing it pretty well.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Adam will go over to you.
- 3:58Speaker 6: A coach with fifteen goals allowed in the last three games,
- 4:03Speaker 6: what is the focus moving forward to kind of get
- 4:06Speaker 6: the defense and the goalie play where it was, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 6: outside of the teeth of the hockey schedule.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I just.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Think sometimes you go through these stretches. We went a
- 4:15Speaker 2: long stretch without giving up much at all. I mean,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think we gave up one goal a weekend in
- 4:21Speaker 2: Connecticut ice.
- 4:22Speaker 5: So it just sometimes it's just stretches where you know,
- 4:29Speaker 5: it's a byproduct of.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Backchecking sometimes, like you've got to make sure that we're
- 4:35Speaker 2: getting four and five guys back on the you know,
- 4:39Speaker 2: in the rush against in the defensive zone. It's doing
- 4:43Speaker 2: your job and not chasing the puck all over the place.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So there's a lot of different factors that go into
- 4:51Speaker 2: defense and defensive schemes, and I think we just got
- 4:55Speaker 2: to probably tighten up in a couple of different areas.
- 4:59Speaker 2: But I don't think we have the overhaul anything.
- 5:04Speaker 6: When we talked, I think it was before the weekend
- 5:06Speaker 6: and you sounded like you wanted to overhaul the face
- 5:09Speaker 6: off situation, and then you won fifty six percent on
- 5:11Speaker 6: the weekend. So what did you see out of that,
- 5:13Speaker 6: because I know it was a point of emphasis.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it just sometimes it's again it's making sure that
- 5:18Speaker 2: the not necessarily the center, but the guy's helping out
- 5:22Speaker 2: on the draw, whether it's the wings of the defensemen
- 5:25Speaker 2: that are getting in there and help win those fifty
- 5:26Speaker 2: to fifty puck battles. Very very rarely a puck's snap
- 5:31Speaker 2: back clean. You know that there's always a little bit
- 5:34Speaker 2: of a battle for that puck, and you've got to
- 5:37Speaker 2: be able to get in there and win those battles.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Is John Spets available for tomorrow night.
- 5:44Speaker 5: I don't think he'll play tomorrow night.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Okay, And if it was the NCAA Tournament Round one,
- 5:51Speaker 6: would he be available, And then it's just kind of
- 5:53Speaker 6: just gives him an opportunity to get a couple of
- 5:55Speaker 6: weeks off.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I don't want to spend it
- 5:58Speaker 2: like that. I just think he's not healthy to play
- 6:02Speaker 2: tomorrow night.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I don't see it being a season ending injury, but
- 6:09Speaker 2: he's definitely not healthy to play tomorrow.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Night, got it?
- 6:12Speaker 6: Thank you, Dang.
- 6:14Speaker 3: We'll jump over to you.
- 6:17Speaker 7: Just a little bit in that regard. But I think
- 6:20Speaker 7: you've been going every weekend for the most part since
- 6:24Speaker 7: going out to Milwaukee, So you know, once you get
- 6:26Speaker 7: through this game, is there just gonna be some value
- 6:29Speaker 7: in getting a weekend off and resetting before you hit
- 6:32Speaker 7: down the final stretch.
- 6:34Speaker 2: No question, I think we've been talking. It's been not
- 6:38Speaker 2: only that, it's just I feel like since we started
- 6:41Speaker 2: playing New Hampshire and then Maine, and then the Connecticut
- 6:44Speaker 2: Tournament in Providence, and then the the UMass teams, both
- 6:49Speaker 2: of them Lowell end Amherst, it's just been a really
- 6:53Speaker 2: intense stretch of hockey for us, and it'll culminate tomorrow
- 6:58Speaker 2: night with the last coming in here. So I do
- 7:03Speaker 2: think it'll be a good time for us to reset
- 7:06Speaker 2: and take a few days off before the real stretch run.
- 7:11Speaker 7: I think you went up to Alaska once or twice,
- 7:15Speaker 7: if I remember right when you were at BC. I
- 7:17Speaker 7: went once, Yeah, which which of the two cities did
- 7:21Speaker 7: you go to?
- 7:22Speaker 5: And I went to Anchorage?
- 7:23Speaker 7: So what do you remember from going up there?
- 7:26Speaker 2: I remember the hotel was great, The captain cookhouse. But yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 2: I mean it's a beautiful area, it really is. And
- 7:38Speaker 2: I remember it took forever to get home, so it's
- 7:41Speaker 2: a it's a tough trip. It's we left on a
- 7:45Speaker 2: red eye after the game on Saturday night. You don't
- 7:47Speaker 2: get home till five pm the next day. It's it's
- 7:50Speaker 2: a long day getting home.
- 7:53Speaker 5: And but.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's a cool town and it's got
- 7:59Speaker 2: beautiful scenery out there. I haven't been back since so too,
- 8:04Speaker 2: but I'm sure it's changed quite a bit.
- 8:09Speaker 7: On the hockey front, Hudson hit thirty points last game,
- 8:14Speaker 7: and he had that two years ago. Last year it
- 8:17Speaker 7: dipped obviously with the rest of the offense, But just
- 8:20Speaker 7: how much stronger is the offense and your attack when
- 8:25Speaker 7: Hudson's producing at that level and consistently putting up points.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're getting certainly, he's had a fabulous
- 8:33Speaker 2: year and I'm hoping to continuous form because no one
- 8:37Speaker 2: deserves it more than he does, you know. That Being said, though,
- 8:42Speaker 2: I think we're getting a lot of balance scoring too.
- 8:44Speaker 2: We've got people chipping in from every line that we've had.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Guys have been chipping in goals, So.
- 8:52Speaker 2: That's something we're going to need to have all the
- 8:55Speaker 2: way through. You can't rely on one line to score
- 8:57Speaker 2: all your goals. Some teams that are one line dependent,
- 9:02Speaker 2: and if that for some reason, that line's not going
- 9:04Speaker 2: that night, it's really hard to win. So I'm happy
- 9:09Speaker 2: that he's having a great year, and also a lot
- 9:11Speaker 2: of other people are having career years this year.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Yeah, one of those guys, Joey sixteen goals is tied
- 9:18Speaker 7: for the second most in a single year since you've
- 9:22Speaker 7: been here. I remember when he came in that you
- 9:25Speaker 7: said he was a goal scorer, and that's why the
- 9:28Speaker 7: Sharks picked him. Just what makes him so good at
- 9:30Speaker 7: putting the puck in the back of the net.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that's one of those things that it's a hard
- 9:35Speaker 2: thing skill to teach. It's just some kids have a
- 9:38Speaker 2: knack for scoring goals, and one you got to put
- 9:40Speaker 2: yourself in position, and Joey skates and competes and goes
- 9:44Speaker 2: to the hard areas to score goals, and he's got
- 9:48Speaker 2: a terrific skill set around the net.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Natalie, go ahead, thank you, Good morning, coach.
- 10:01Speaker 8: Nice to see you again.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Good morning, Natalie, Nice to see you.
- 10:04Speaker 8: It's been a little while, but I guess just just
- 10:07Speaker 8: kind of catching up here. Someone I wanted to talk
- 10:10Speaker 8: about was Ryan Tattle. You know, he behind the scenes.
- 10:13Speaker 8: He was actually seemed to be in the conversation for
- 10:16Speaker 8: Player of the Month in January before Ryan Leonard took
- 10:19Speaker 8: that honor. But for him to just you know, come
- 10:22Speaker 8: in this season and really have such you know, a
- 10:24Speaker 8: strong year and maybe you know, looking at the month
- 10:27Speaker 8: of January in particular, you know what has he displayed
- 10:30Speaker 8: this year as opposed to years prior that you've really
- 10:33Speaker 8: kind of seen fall into place for him.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I started to see this coming at the end
- 10:39Speaker 2: of last year. I thought both he and Joey Muldowney.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I thought they played a lot together at the end
- 10:46Speaker 2: of last year and they started to, I think, take
- 10:50Speaker 2: their games to another level. And then this summer they
- 10:52Speaker 2: both put in a lot of work this summer and
- 10:54Speaker 2: it's just continued and he really works at his game.
- 11:01Speaker 2: He's out here all the time. Last night he was
- 11:04Speaker 2: talking to me about he didn't feel like he played
- 11:07Speaker 2: a great two hundred foot game over the weekend. So
- 11:11Speaker 2: he's conscientious kid that he's not just driven by scoring.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He's driven to win and a lot of times you know,
- 11:22Speaker 2: the most successful people or the people that love showing
- 11:25Speaker 2: up at the rink every day just trying to get
- 11:27Speaker 2: better and not focused on a destination or a goal.
- 11:31Speaker 2: They just focus on how can I get better today?
- 11:35Speaker 2: And I think that's who he is every single day.
- 11:39Speaker 2: He's just trying to get better. He's super coachable and again,
- 11:44Speaker 2: I'm happy he's having such a great year.
- 11:47Speaker 8: When you think about that off season, you know training
- 11:49Speaker 8: that you mentioned, what did you really see him fine
- 11:52Speaker 8: tune during the summer months that he brought back, Well, Moe.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Butler does a great job with our guys, and he
- 11:59Speaker 2: was he all of July. I think just working on explosiveness,
- 12:04Speaker 2: he's working on strength. One area where I.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Think he's really improved is he's winning battles down low.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You know, he's not a physically imposing guy, but he's
- 12:16Speaker 2: very strong on his skates and he's got an excellent
- 12:20Speaker 2: stick and you have to have you know, he uses
- 12:23Speaker 2: his leverage and he gets strong and he goes into
- 12:25Speaker 2: battles ferociously, which which helps him win a lot of
- 12:30Speaker 2: battles and in turn get him He'll see more scoring
- 12:34Speaker 2: chances when that's the case.
- 12:37Speaker 8: And then I guess the last guy I kind of
- 12:39Speaker 8: wanted to ask about was Taber Heath slit more in
- 12:41Speaker 8: particular the UMass game and the defensive side that he displayed.
- 12:45Speaker 8: You know, what kind of a value does that have
- 12:48Speaker 8: when he's playing like that.
- 12:50Speaker 2: You know, it takes all different types of ingredients to
- 12:53Speaker 2: have a successful team, and he is one that, without
- 12:57Speaker 2: a doubt for a long time, you can count on
- 12:59Speaker 2: him to one. He's excellent penalty killer. Uh, he's another
- 13:06Speaker 2: one who's really strong on his skates. He wins a
- 13:09Speaker 2: lot of battles, and if we're protecting a one goal
- 13:12Speaker 2: lead or you know they've pulled the goaltender, he's on
- 13:15Speaker 2: the ice like there's no question because he can win
- 13:18Speaker 2: face offs, block shots, and he wins battles. So Uh,
- 13:24Speaker 2: one of the reasons why he was elected captain, I
- 13:26Speaker 2: think because there's another one that just wants to win
- 13:28Speaker 2: hockey games.
- 13:29Speaker 8: Awesome, thank you so much, coach.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Joe, go ahead, Uh, cav with with John out again,
- 13:38Speaker 4: I guess that means Pascucci will will will play again.
- 13:41Speaker 4: He hadn't played in a long time. What did you
- 13:43Speaker 4: what did you see from him on Saturday? Yeah, we
- 13:45Speaker 4: haven't made a decision yet who's gonna play? But uh,
- 13:51Speaker 4: he hadn't played in a long time, so it's sometimes
- 13:54Speaker 4: tough coming into those situations.
- 13:57Speaker 5: But uh, you know, we'll see. I'm not sure yet
- 14:01Speaker 5: who's gonna go tomorrow.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yet we all what a possibility everyone is. So's Bower Smith.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Bower Swift.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Okay, all right, thank you, Dan, go ahead.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Just kind of on the defenseman front, you started the
- 14:19Speaker 7: year with ten of them, and obviously that's been whittled
- 14:21Speaker 7: down a little bit, but it does feel like the
- 14:25Speaker 7: depth you have is stronger than it's been in years past.
- 14:27Speaker 2: On the blue line, I would agree with that. Yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I would agree with that one hundred percent. I think
- 14:33Speaker 2: it's been you know, we've been very good at moving
- 14:38Speaker 2: moving the puck.
- 14:39Speaker 5: I've loved the way we've I think that's been.
- 14:43Speaker 2: A really upgrade to our game. That we've offensively been
- 14:50Speaker 2: able to exit our zone a lot more cleanly, which
- 14:55Speaker 2: allows you to get, you know, better chances to play
- 15:00Speaker 2: he's the puck in the offensive zone, or better yet,
- 15:02Speaker 2: carry the puck in, which gives you a better chance
- 15:04Speaker 2: I believe to score goals. So yeah, I would agree
- 15:09Speaker 2: Dan that our defensemen this year have been a lot
- 15:13Speaker 2: more mobile and offensively gifted.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Do we got anything else for coach guys? Awesome? Well,
- 15:22Speaker 3: thanks everyone for joining Coach. Good luck tomorrow all.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Right, Thanks guys, have a great day.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Thanks Cap
