- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13We are kicking off our new series with
- 0:15this episode, Fruitful Work, Working in the Fruit
- 0:19of the Spirit.
- 0:20And if you've been following Jesus for some
- 0:22time, or you've read the New Testament, you've
- 0:24spent some time in church, you've probably realized
- 0:27that fruit is one of the predominant metaphors
- 0:30in the Bible for describing human beings and
- 0:33their relationship with God.
- 0:35It shows up in the Old Testament, it
- 0:36shows up in the New Testament, it shows
- 0:37up in the teaching of Jesus, it shows
- 0:39up in the teaching of Paul, there's a
- 0:41lot of different variations on it.
- 0:43Jesus talks about good trees and bad trees,
- 0:45Jesus talks about abiding in the vine, vines
- 0:48bearing fruit, Paul talks about the fruit of
- 0:49the spirit in Galatians.
- 0:52And so, because this is one of those
- 0:53scriptural motifs that shows up again and again
- 0:55and again, it's one that's worth paying attention
- 0:57to and trying to wrap our minds and
- 0:59more importantly our hearts around it so that
- 1:02we can bear fruit like God wants us
- 1:05to so that we can bear his kind
- 1:07of life in our interactions at work and
- 1:09everywhere else in life.
- 1:15Just like with our last series, I'm going
- 1:17to be asking a question to help guide
- 1:18our thoughts throughout this series.
- 1:20And the question for our Fruitful Work series
- 1:22is this, what kind of fruit am I
- 1:26bearing at work?
- 1:27Because we're not necessarily always bearing the fruit
- 1:29that we wish we would.
- 1:31That's hard to admit, but we know it's
- 1:33true.
- 1:34And what if it's possible to bear the
- 1:35kind of fruit that we really want to,
- 1:37that God wants us to bear and that
- 1:39we deeply long to bear?
- 1:41But first, before we dig into that, we
- 1:43need to lay some groundwork.
- 1:45So we're going to structure this podcast episode
- 1:48by episode according to the fruit of the
- 1:51spirit passage from Paul's letter to the Galatians,
- 1:53chapter 5, verses 22-23.
- 1:56So let me read that, and then we're
- 1:58going to talk about some basic fruit-bearing
- 2:00ideas in this episode just to lay the
- 2:03backdrop.
- 2:04So this is starting with verse 22.
- 2:06But the fruit of the spirit is love,
- 2:09joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and
- 2:17self-control.
- 2:19Against such things, there is no law.
- 2:22Those two verses are so powerful.
- 2:25They've been set to music and meditated on
- 2:27and written about many, many times over the
- 2:29centuries because of their power.
- 2:31Just reading that list, those nine parts of
- 2:34the fruit of the spirit is a teaching
- 2:36in itself.
- 2:37And if you've never had the chance to
- 2:38memorize those two verses, I encourage you to
- 2:40do that.
- 2:41The nine parts of the spirit are just
- 2:43nine words, right?
- 2:45And the first part is, but the fruit
- 2:46of the spirit is.
- 2:48So that's pretty easy, right?
- 2:49So but the fruit of the spirit is,
- 2:51and then nine words.
- 2:53And so that is a powerful practice, even
- 2:55to just bring those words to mind in
- 2:58the middle of your work day, in the
- 2:59middle of a difficult interaction.
- 3:01Oh, what is the fruit of the spirit
- 3:02again?
- 3:02Oh, it's love, it's joy, it's peace, it's
- 3:05patience.
- 3:07And so that's something that we're also going
- 3:09to lean into in terms of how we
- 3:10structure this series.
- 3:12We're going to have one episode on each
- 3:14of those parts of the fruit of the
- 3:15spirit.
- 3:16But we're going to go through the list
- 3:17backwards.
- 3:18So we're going to start with self-control
- 3:19and then gentleness and then faithfulness and work
- 3:22backwards and end with love.
- 3:24One reason for that is that love is
- 3:26the one that sums up all of the
- 3:28other ones.
- 3:28Love is the integrating virtue, the virtue that
- 3:31binds everything else together, as Paul says in
- 3:34a different passage.
- 3:35And so we are working towards the climax
- 3:39of love, which I feel like is something
- 3:42to look forward to in the way that
- 3:43we structure the episodes.
- 3:45The other thing is that self-control, which
- 3:46is the last one on the list, is
- 3:48my least favorite part of the fruit of
- 3:49the spirit.
- 3:49A lot of these sound fun, joy sounds
- 3:52fun, peace sounds great.
- 3:54Goodness is good, obviously, right?
- 3:56But self-control, self-control, that's a tough
- 3:59one.
- 3:59That's like the dentist appointment part of the
- 4:01fruit of the spirit, right?
- 4:02Like, you know, you got to go, but
- 4:03really self-control.
- 4:06So I figure let's just get it over
- 4:07with.
- 4:07Let's do our first of the nine episodes
- 4:09on that one.
- 4:11So we will get to that in a
- 4:12couple episodes.
- 4:13We got some groundwork we got to cover
- 4:15first, starting with this episode, looking at where
- 4:18else in the Bible does this metaphor of
- 4:20fruit show up.
- 4:21One place that may immediately come to mind
- 4:23is it shows up in Genesis, in the
- 4:25account of the sin of Adam and Eve.
- 4:28So it's a critical moment in human life
- 4:31with God.
- 4:32When humanity turns away from God and goes
- 4:34their own way, fruit is right there.
- 4:37And it's good fruit, right?
- 4:39Eve looks at the fruit and sees that
- 4:40it's desirable for eating and for gaining knowledge
- 4:43and wisdom, and that's part of why she
- 4:46moves towards it.
- 4:48And this is actually part of what Paul
- 4:49is doing in this passage, is playing on
- 4:51the desirability of fruit.
- 4:54This is something that was done in the
- 4:55ancient world when talking about what it means
- 4:58to be a good person, what it means
- 5:00to live a life of virtue, is talking
- 5:02about how do we interact with our pleasures
- 5:04and with our pains.
- 5:06And Paul is addressing that in a very
- 5:07specific and a very Christ-centered way, which
- 5:10we'll get to.
- 5:11But that fits with this biblical backdrop of
- 5:14that first time that fruit really makes a
- 5:16difference.
- 5:17It's because we wanted the fruit and we
- 5:19took it for ourselves.
- 5:21But another way that fruit shows up in
- 5:23Scripture is in the teaching of Jesus.
- 5:25And this, I think, is possibly in the
- 5:28back of Paul's mind as he's writing.
- 5:30He doesn't explicitly quote this passage.
- 5:32Paul, because he didn't actually meet Jesus face
- 5:35-to-face until after Jesus' resurrection, he didn't
- 5:37hear all of Jesus' teaching, although he obviously
- 5:40learned it from others and through the verbal
- 5:43tradition, the oral tradition, that was already being
- 5:45developed in the early church.
- 5:46So he may have known this saying of
- 5:48Jesus about trees and fruit, or he might
- 5:50not have.
- 5:51But what he writes is definitely in line
- 5:53with it, even if he didn't know it
- 5:54explicitly.
- 5:56And so I want to read this from
- 5:57Luke chapter 6, Jesus speaking about trees.
- 6:00This is starting in verse 43.
- 6:03For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor
- 6:06again does a bad tree bear good fruit.
- 6:09For each tree is known by its own
- 6:11fruit.
- 6:12For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes,
- 6:14nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
- 6:16The good person out of the good treasure
- 6:18of his heart produces good, and the evil
- 6:21person out of the evil treasure produces evil.
- 6:25For out of the abundance of his heart,
- 6:27his mouth speaks.
- 6:30But what is Jesus doing with this teaching?
- 6:32Well, I want to point out just a
- 6:33couple things that he puts together.
- 6:36One is that he immediately contrasts good fruit
- 6:38with bad fruit.
- 6:39He's making an emphasis that there's more than
- 6:41one kind of fruit.
- 6:42There's a distinction.
- 6:42There's a variety, so to speak.
- 6:45And then he unpacks that in terms that
- 6:46his first century Middle Eastern listeners would be
- 6:50familiar with.
- 6:51So he talks about fig trees.
- 6:52He's like, if you're going to go to
- 6:53a fig tree, what kind of fruit do
- 6:55you expect?
- 6:56Figs.
- 6:56You're not going to get some other kind
- 6:58of fruit from a fig tree.
- 6:59You're going to get figs from a fig
- 6:59tree.
- 7:00And then so on.
- 7:01You're going to get grapes from a grapevine.
- 7:02So there's a distinction.
- 7:04For me as a Midwesterner in the 21st
- 7:06century, I think about varieties of apples, right?
- 7:09So I go apple picking in the fall
- 7:11with friends and family pretty often.
- 7:12It's a great tradition.
- 7:13We buy apple cider donuts at the end.
- 7:15We bake apple pies with the apples that
- 7:17we pick.
- 7:18But part of the fun is that there's
- 7:19so many varieties of apples.
- 7:21And this is part of the marketing scheme
- 7:22of each of the apple orchards.
- 7:24They're like, here's our homegrown variety of franken
- 7:27apple.
- 7:28There's spliced together different apple varieties.
- 7:31And it's like, you can only get it
- 7:32here on the face of planet earth.
- 7:34Buy your franken apple apple cider at the
- 7:36gift shop before you leave.
- 7:37But it's actually really delicious to try new
- 7:40apple flavors.
- 7:41And it's not the same.
- 7:42There might be a familiar one, like a
- 7:44honey crisp variety.
- 7:45And then something brand new that they've just
- 7:47made this year that's new.
- 7:49Well, which tree are you going to get
- 7:50it from?
- 7:51Well, you're not going to get the new
- 7:52variety from the honey crisp tree.
- 7:53You got to go to the new tree.
- 7:54You got to go to the franken apple
- 7:55tree to get the franken apple variety.
- 7:58And this is just common sense, right?
- 8:01The kind of tree determines the kind of
- 8:03fruit.
- 8:04But this is common sense that we often
- 8:06forget when it comes to the human heart.
- 8:09Because that's where Jesus immediately applies this is
- 8:11he, he starts talking about trees, but he
- 8:13ends by talking about hearts.
- 8:15He says the good person out of the
- 8:17good treasure of his heart produces good.
- 8:21And the evil person out of the evil
- 8:22treasure of his heart produces evil.
- 8:26So what Jesus is saying is just like
- 8:27with a plant or a tree, the nature
- 8:30of the plant is what determines the nature
- 8:32of the fruit.
- 8:33He's saying it's the same thing with human
- 8:35beings.
- 8:36It's the nature of our heart that produces
- 8:38the nature of our words or our actions.
- 8:42And Jesus ends by talking about words.
- 8:43He says for out of the abundance of
- 8:45the heart, his mouth speaks.
- 8:48So even though the root is hidden, right?
- 8:51You can't see the roots of the trees.
- 8:52They're under the earth, right?
- 8:54The fruit is visible and you can figure
- 8:57out what kind of root based on what
- 8:58kind of fruit.
- 8:59And look at the honey crisp apple and
- 9:01say like, oh, this is a honey crisp
- 9:02tree and those roots are honey crisp roots.
- 9:04And they're different than than franken tree roots.
- 9:07Even though you can't see the inside of
- 9:09the tree, you can discern what's there based
- 9:11on what's produced externally.
- 9:13So our words and our actions show what's
- 9:16true about our hearts.
- 9:17They show what's true most deeply about us,
- 9:20our internal hidden character.
- 9:23Jesus also uses this metaphor of treasure.
- 9:25He kind of sneaks it in there.
- 9:26It's mainly talking about trees and fruit, but
- 9:28then he talks about treasure.
- 9:29He says the good person out of the
- 9:31good treasure of his heart produces good.
- 9:35And in our context, we might think of
- 9:37treasure in terms of our bank accounts.
- 9:38So would you take all the digits of
- 9:41your bank account and post them on a
- 9:42social media post for everyone to see?
- 9:45Well, you might, but you would live to
- 9:46regret it, right?
- 9:47Because if you make it public, then everybody's
- 9:49got access, right?
- 9:50That's like a key.
- 9:51It's a code that gives access to your
- 9:53treasure.
- 9:54And that's why you're supposed to keep it
- 9:55secret and have it be a private thing
- 9:57that only you and other trusted family members
- 10:00who might access that bank account have access
- 10:02to.
- 10:03Well, Jesus is saying that's how it is
- 10:04in our hearts too.
- 10:05What is most valuable, what is most a
- 10:08treasure about a human being is what's hidden.
- 10:11It's what's inward.
- 10:12It's what others can't access.
- 10:14It's what's unseen.
- 10:16Who we are on the inside is what's
- 10:17most precious about us.
- 10:20And yet the way that we discern what's
- 10:22on the inside is by looking at somebody's
- 10:23actions and their words.
- 10:26Now, this inside-outside dynamic is exactly what
- 10:29Paul is getting at when he talks about
- 10:31the fruit of the spirit.
- 10:33So he contrasts the acts of the flesh
- 10:36and the fruit of the spirit.
- 10:37We'll do some more work with that starting
- 10:39in our next episode.
- 10:41But we can understand what's going on.
- 10:43The question is, what kind of fruit am
- 10:46I bearing?
- 10:47Oh, I said a word in anger.
- 10:50That means there's some anger in my heart.
- 10:53Or, oh, I was able to do a
- 10:56kind act for someone.
- 10:57Oh, that means by God's grace, there's some
- 11:00kindness in my heart.
- 11:02So we trace back from the word or
- 11:04the action to the condition of the heart.
- 11:08And this actually is a source of incredible
- 11:10hope for me.
- 11:12Because early on in my Christian life, when
- 11:13I was a teenager and in my early
- 11:1520s, I experienced what I like to call
- 11:17treadmill spirituality.
- 11:19So I would listen to a sermon or
- 11:21maybe a podcast like this.
- 11:22Read a Bible passage.
- 11:24It's some teaching of Jesus.
- 11:26And then I'd try to obey Jesus' teaching.
- 11:29And then I would fail to obey Jesus'
- 11:31teaching.
- 11:31I would feel really guilty because I'm like,
- 11:33I want to be a good Christian and
- 11:34I can't do it.
- 11:35So then I would confess my sins, receive
- 11:37God's forgiveness, and then try again.
- 11:40And it was just this treadmill of like,
- 11:43try, fail, repeat, try, fail, repeat, try, fail,
- 11:45repeat.
- 11:46And for a lot of Christians, that's the
- 11:47only version of Christian life they've ever known.
- 11:49And it's exhausting and it's demoralizing.
- 11:51And it's not what Jesus intended for us.
- 11:54Now, I don't mean to suggest that there's
- 11:55some way to be totally failure-free as
- 11:57a disciple of Jesus.
- 11:58We will always need grace.
- 12:00We will always need forgiveness.
- 12:01We will always need God to be with
- 12:03us in our weaknesses.
- 12:05It's just to say that a treadmill means
- 12:07you're expending a lot of effort and you're
- 12:08not going anywhere.
- 12:10And Jesus wants us to expend a lot
- 12:11of effort and go somewhere in our life
- 12:14with him.
- 12:15Jesus wants us to experience real change from
- 12:17the inside out.
- 12:18He wants to make the tree good.
- 12:20So that we can bear good fruit.
- 12:25Dallas Willard, a thinker who I cite quite
- 12:27often, he talks about the Galatians passage in
- 12:30this way.
- 12:31The fruit of the spirit is simply the
- 12:34inner character of Jesus himself that is brought
- 12:37about in us through the process of Christian
- 12:40spiritual formation.
- 12:42It is the outcome of spiritual formation.
- 12:45It is Christ formed in us.
- 12:47It is called fruit because, like the fruit
- 12:49of trees or vines, it is an outgrowth
- 12:52of what we have become, not the result
- 12:54of a special effort to bear fruit.
- 12:56And we have become fruitful in this way
- 12:58because we have received the presence of Christ's
- 13:01Spirit through the process of spiritual formation.
- 13:03And now that spirit interacting with us fills
- 13:06us with love, joy, peace.
- 13:10That's from Dallas's book, The Great Omission, the
- 13:13collection of his essays and talks.
- 13:15And so you see what Dallas is saying.
- 13:17He's like, it's not like a special effort
- 13:18or a special project where you're just like,
- 13:20trying to bear fruit.
- 13:23No, no, no.
- 13:23It's the natural result of interaction with Christ's
- 13:27Spirit.
- 13:28And so as we dig into each part
- 13:30of the fruit of the spirit and each
- 13:32of the nine episodes that we'll do that
- 13:34in, we're going to look at in our
- 13:36workplace, what does it look like to interact
- 13:38with Christ's Spirit?
- 13:40So each episode is not meant to inspire
- 13:42guilt, right?
- 13:43It's not meant to say you really ought
- 13:45to be gentle, but you're not.
- 13:48So you should feel guilty.
- 13:50No, that's not the point.
- 13:51The point is, how do you interact with
- 13:53a God's Spirit while you're on the clock,
- 13:55while you're interacting with your coworkers as well,
- 13:58while you're interacting with your to-do list
- 13:59in such a way that the tree becomes
- 14:01good so that you bear the fruit of
- 14:04gentleness naturally?
- 14:06How do you participate with God's process of
- 14:09working in your heart so that the real
- 14:11change takes care of itself?
- 14:14You don't get a Honeycrisp apple by trying
- 14:16really, really hard to get a Honeycrisp apple.
- 14:19You get a Honeycrisp apple by taking care
- 14:20of a Honeycrisp tree by making sure it's
- 14:23in the soil and the roots are getting
- 14:24the nutrients they need, by making sure that's
- 14:26watered, by making sure the leaves can get
- 14:28the sunlight.
- 14:29And these are things that we can do
- 14:30as we interact with Christ's Spirit during the
- 14:33workday and in our own times of devotion
- 14:35so that God produces this change in us.
- 14:40And this is so important for our lives
- 14:42at work because the power of the Holy
- 14:44Spirit is what really makes us grow.
- 14:48And the best thing you can do for
- 14:49your coworkers and everyone you interact with at
- 14:52work is to become a person whose life
- 14:54is more and more characterized by love, joy,
- 14:59peace, and all the rest.
- 15:03One final thought here.
- 15:04You might have noticed that I've been referring
- 15:06to each of these things as a part
- 15:08of the fruit of the Spirit rather than
- 15:09as fruits, plural, of the Spirit.
- 15:12And when I was a kid, I remember
- 15:14in Sunday school we were looking at this
- 15:15passage and we had an activity where we
- 15:17cut out from yellow construction paper, a banana,
- 15:19and from green construction paper, an apple, and
- 15:22from orange construction paper, an orange, and then
- 15:24pasted them on a big sheet together and
- 15:26wrote on the orange gentleness and on the
- 15:29apple patience.
- 15:31And I get what the teachers were trying
- 15:32to do and I'm really grateful for those
- 15:34teachers.
- 15:34I actually just saw one of them last
- 15:35week.
- 15:36But they were wrong.
- 15:38That's not what the passage is saying.
- 15:39It's not saying, oh, here's one fruit of
- 15:42the Spirit is gentleness and another fruit of
- 15:43the Spirit is patience.
- 15:44No, no, each of these are part of
- 15:46the singular fruit of the Spirit.
- 15:49Just like in English, it's a collective noun
- 15:51but it's singular.
- 15:52So it includes, it collects many things within
- 15:54it but it's united.
- 15:57And so it's not like we choose to
- 15:58grow in patience but then we don't worry
- 15:59about joy.
- 16:00Or we choose to grow in faithfulness but
- 16:02then we don't worry about self-control.
- 16:04As much as I might like to not
- 16:05worry about self-control.
- 16:07No, we grow in all of these things
- 16:09together as the Holy Spirit works in our
- 16:12heart and they reinforce each other and they
- 16:14culminate in love and that's why it really
- 16:17works.
- 16:18And that also is reason for hope.
- 16:20But if you feel like these are things
- 16:21that don't characterize your life, it is possible
