Transcript
- 0:24Welcome back everybody to another mini episode.
- 0:27I'm here with Rod Smith from the Millennial Mustard Seed podcast.
- 0:31Hey, Rod. How's it going, Pete?
- 0:33It's going well. And this one, we decided we are
- 0:37going to try to bookend this series, but we've got a decent
- 0:42bit of ground to cover. And So what I think we're going
- 0:46to try to do is just blaze through all of the stuff that we
- 0:50have. And whether that makes two or
- 0:52three mini episodes, we're just going to keep the microphone
- 0:58rolling and split it as it makes sense to split it.
- 1:03And then when we get done with this, put these all together
- 1:07with the previous five minis and call it one large series in one
- 1:14episode as a bonus episode on rethinking eternal security.
- 1:20So lot to cover, but we prayed. The words are going to be salt,
- 1:27right, Rod? Shout out to your book title.
- 1:32And yeah, so looking over the things that we have yet to
- 1:36cover, we did not get into all of the verses that seem to point
- 1:42to why the believer cannot lose their salvation.
- 1:46And I want to lift up my buddy Kevin Thompson over at Beyond
- 1:52the Fundamentals, and one of his free files that you can get at
- 1:56his website of the same name has an Eternal security 3 or 4 page
- 2:02PDF with a lot of good verse references.
- 2:08And kind of the premise that I felt like God prompted me to
- 2:14start this series with Rod was the idea that all of these
- 2:18verses can still be true. And yet someone who can someone
- 2:26can profess faith and yet not enter heaven.
- 2:32How is that possible if all of these promises for the believer
- 2:35are true? How can someone not enter heaven
- 2:40if they're a believer? Well, what if they don't stay a
- 2:45believer? These are reasons why the
- 2:50believer cannot lose salvation. But in my opinion and please,
- 2:56prayerfully and scripturally you guys out there, check this.
- 2:59I'm not teaching something that I think is 100% factual,
- 3:03correct. I want you to check this and be
- 3:06a good Berean. The believer cannot lose
- 3:09salvation, but any person can. What does that mean?
- 3:15It's kind of like an indestructible bus on its way to
- 3:19heaven. We have a guaranteed destination
- 3:22as long as we're on that bus, but in this life we still have a
- 3:26choice to jump off or stay on. If you stop having the faith,
- 3:32which is the means of appropriating the grace of
- 3:36salvation, then you stop having the grace.
- 3:40One of the most famous verses comes from Ephesians 2.
- 3:45I'm sure all you guys are familiar with it. 2 Verse 8.
- 3:49For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not
- 3:54your own doing. What's the this the saving?
- 3:59The saving is God's doing and how does he manifest it?
- 4:03What is the means of appropriating that grace through
- 4:07faith? And Rod, you asked me earlier,
- 4:11when we look at through what to meet, what do we mean do it?
- 4:14Do we mean like I, I just walked through a crowd?
- 4:18No, it means by means of right. I'll pass it to you for a second
- 4:23just to just to comment on that because I that is a key point of
- 4:26what that that through means. It's kind of like a plug and a
- 4:30cord, and that plug and cord is plugged into the power source.
- 4:36Yeah. I mean, my critical thinking
- 4:39about that verse arise that question, you know, from outside
- 4:43of the box kind of looking in and trying to understand, well,
- 4:46how would the younger me, I've wrestled with that versus how I
- 4:50view it now? And how does my neighbor see
- 4:52that regardless of where they're at and their education of the
- 4:55Bible or relationship or anything, right?
- 4:57Like how are people really resonating with what they're
- 5:00reading when they're trying to understand where where you're
- 5:05at, where's your eternal security at right.
- 5:08And so that question obviously, as you highlighted, was my way
- 5:12of kind of pointing out, are we leaving anything off the table
- 5:16with just glancing at that scripturally brushing the the
- 5:20top of your book off and flipping through?
- 5:22Are we really getting to the crux of the issue?
- 5:24And So what I walked away from our pre air conversation with
- 5:28that question that you you brought up a minute ago that I
- 5:31asked, what does it mean to go through?
- 5:34Let's define that. And it's by means of which means
- 5:38what has been denoted and created is the only way to
- 5:43access it. So it's, it's God's created gift
- 5:47to us. It's the narrow plank that they
- 5:51can feel like a plank sometimes that you're working on.
- 5:55And and there's no other way. Only a thief would take a
- 5:57different way. So I'll pass it back to you as
- 5:59just kind of a brief comment on that was a really good part that
- 6:03we maybe we should have captured.
- 6:05Unfortunately that one didn't get on the mic, but we tried to
- 6:08bring in some justice here. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:12And that's the key thing. I know in in some circles people
- 6:16can accuse others of saying, well, if the faith is yours,
- 6:22then that's a work and now you're taking credit for
- 6:26salvation. Well, I've said this many times
- 6:29when it comes to sort of that Gnostic determinism of, you
- 6:33know, the idea of, of being saved because you're elect.
- 6:36If I'm in a 50 foot hole and I've got a 5 foot rope, I can't
- 6:41get out. But if somebody comes along with
- 6:43a 50 foot rope and they throw it down and once I get to the top,
- 6:49I don't pat myself on the back and say, boy, was I smart to
- 6:52grab that rope. No, I think the guy for the
- 6:54rope, the rope was the means. It was through that rope that I
- 6:59was saved. The person at the top gets all
- 7:02the credit. And so we give we give God all
- 7:05the credit for our salvation, but he has made a way that
- 7:09narrow way, which is through faith.
- 7:12And it to me, it's really like that a power cord plugged into a
- 7:16wall, you know, keep yourself plugged in, abide in me.
- 7:20We're going to look at that, that verse talking about abiding
- 7:24in me. The means of appropriating that
- 7:28grace is through faith. So eternal security is
- 7:33absolutely true in the sense that God is not going to reject
- 7:37us as long as we have faith in Him.
- 7:42We are. We are declaring our allegiance
- 7:45to Him. We are saying we are loyal to
- 7:48Him. Ups and downs, yes.
- 7:50Sin abounds, yes. But rejecting Him, No.
- 7:57No, we are confessing Him before men and He will confess us
- 8:03before His Father. So let's look at some of these
- 8:08eternal security so-called proof texts and see how all of these
- 8:13things can be true for the believer but are conditional
- 8:17upon faith. And again, they are for the
- 8:21believer. If someone ceases to be a
- 8:23believer, then these promises are no longer for them, they are
- 8:28for the believer. Just like in Ephesians, Paul
- 8:32says predestined to be conformed to his image.
- 8:38We are on that bus and the destination of the believer is
- 8:44to be sanctified. So, Rod, do you want to just go
- 8:48through a few of these verses that we have, especially the
- 8:54ones that are maybe highlighted or in bold, and I'll jump in
- 9:01with a few of them that I think are are powerful.
- 9:05The believers in Christ it talks about Romans 8 one first
- 9:09Corinthians 130 and many other verses and the believers known
- 9:16knows Christ that's second Timothy 219 John 17 three the
- 9:22believer is part of the body of Christ.
- 9:24This is reference many places First Corinthians 1212 through
- 9:2913, Ephesians 412. I mean just thinking about the
- 9:35body of Christ, all of those members being unified and God
- 9:39giving us the subscription of like we were in him, he's in US,
- 9:44He's it's made by him and for him Jesus is the eternal being.
- 9:49John 858 says Revelation 1/8. Nothing can separate the
- 9:57believer from the love of God. Romans 838 through 39 says,
- 10:02which means that the believer will never be subject to God's
- 10:06wrath. The believer's life is
- 10:09everlasting. John 316 and 1st John 513 talk
- 10:15about and the believers chosen and this is one that we know.
- 10:21There's certain denominational preferences out there that will
- 10:23run with this isolated concept and let it supersede all the
- 10:27other Scriptures. I think those of you may kind of
- 10:33know what I'm talking about. I'm not going to bash them, but
- 10:35what we will do is acknowledge that there's reverence to
- 10:40Ephesians 1/4 and 2nd Thessalonians 213.
- 10:45We have so much favor and acceptance in Christ.
- 10:48You know, the believers called the elect according to the
- 10:52foreknowledge of God in first Peter one and two and the verses
- 10:56go on and on. I just skimmed through a couple
- 10:59to give you guys that reference point to, you know, to start
- 11:02looking. This is in a eternal security
- 11:05perspective in him there. There's nothing we can do
- 11:09outside of it ourselves. There's nothing we bring to the
- 11:12table there. There is no righteousness of our
- 11:15own. You know, before I pass it back
- 11:17to you, Pete, I am triggered about Revelation the sheep and
- 11:20the goat nations, which Dan Deval wrote a really good book
- 11:23on that that I've interviewed him on.
- 11:25And we might have talked about this before.
- 11:29So forgive me if I'm repeating myself minutely, but the
- 11:33separation is based on the goats are saying we did this.
- 11:38We cast out demons in your name. We healed the sick.
- 11:42And then there's these sheeps that are like, when did I do
- 11:49something, Lord, like I, I've been trembling and I, I kept
- 11:52getting it wrong. I, I didn't always understand.
- 11:55And so I mean, I pass it back to you with the concept of it
- 11:59either is from him, through him, by him, or it's nothing of
- 12:05ourselves. That's right clear.
- 12:08I'll add a few more from the list here from Kevin Thompson's
- 12:12PDF. Excellent list.
- 12:15There is no condemnation for the believer.
- 12:17Romans 8 one First Thessalonians 59 and 10.
- 12:23The believer has the righteousness of Christ. 2nd
- 12:26Corinthians 521. The believer is a Son of God.
- 12:29John 112 Galatians 4-5 and six. The believer is secured by God's
- 12:36greatness and knowledge despite serious doubts of the heart.
- 12:39First, John 319 through 21. Let that be an assurance for so
- 12:45much of you guys out there. And I know people in my family
- 12:51grew up this way too. Where you'll hear this message
- 12:56all the only thing good about you is God and otherwise you're
- 12:59just a wretched Sinner. You're an awful worm, you know,
- 13:04and and God had to practically plug his nose to build like a
- 13:09stinky diaper to pick you up out of your sin.
- 13:12And that is not how he sees you before or after salvation.
- 13:17You know, we're made in his image.
- 13:21But even more so loved is the believer who now has the
- 13:25righteousness of his very own Son on us.
- 13:30But even before. I mean, yeah, that kind of
- 13:34language takes the truth of the ugliness of sin and makes us
- 13:43pushed down to the dirt to try to make God look more glorified.
- 13:48I, I don't think God would ever want to push us down to get more
- 13:53glory for himself. He doesn't act like that.
- 13:57But that's just a little bit of a sidebar.
- 14:00So we see all these verses about eternal security and this is God
- 14:08holding on to us, right? This is to assure us that having
- 14:14faith in him and we don't have time to unpack what that looks
- 14:20like believing in him. The difference between even
- 14:27belief and faith. You know belief comes from
- 14:32beloved that when we believe on Christ it we're saying he's our
- 14:38beloved. We treasure him and we do.
- 14:41Our actions follow, you know, one that we have love for,
- 14:48right? But even with that in mind, the
- 14:53difference between intellectual belief only, which is where the
- 14:58Scripture says even the demons believe in God and shudder,
- 15:03right? The devil believes in God, he's
- 15:07not going to heaven, right? So it's not mere intellectual
- 15:10ascent, but that's I think for you guys to continue to press in
- 15:18and understand what does it mean to be connected to God through
- 15:22faith? As long as you are doing that
- 15:25and it's not works, then you're saved and you remain saved and
- 15:30God's not kicking you out. That part is absolutely secure,
- 15:35but it's conditional upon faith. You got to keep the plug in.
- 15:41If you cease to be a believer, you forfeit those promises.
- 15:44It's kind of like if my team is heading to the playoffs, we get
- 15:51through the playoffs, we're headed to the championship, and
- 15:53for whatever reason, I decide to quit the team.
- 15:56My team goes to the championship, wins the game,
- 15:59gets the trophy, gets the rings. I'm not getting one because I
- 16:05quit the team before the game, right?
- 16:08So all the promises that God has is when we stay on the team.
- 16:17And I'm not about to say you have to do a minimum amount of
- 16:21works to get there because that's workspace salvation.
- 16:27But if you have none, Book of James might say, do you actually
- 16:32have faith? I think that's something worth
- 16:35wrestling with. Paul also says test yourself to
- 16:39see if you are in the faith. We ought to test ourselves, hold
- 16:43ourselves up to Scripture Rod right and go, am I in alignment
- 16:48with this? Yeah, I mean maintenance.
- 16:54There's no piece of equipment that you'll just run and not
- 16:59give its due maintenance. Even your body can only handle
- 17:02so much before you need to sleep.
- 17:05Rehydrate intermittent fast the same as it is with our walk with
- 17:09the Lord. That's why the Sabbath's are
- 17:12commanded. It's in the Big 10.
- 17:13It's not a recommendation. And so we should be checking our
- 17:18faith. And just like the word says, you
- 17:20know a man who looks into the mirror and doesn't remember who
- 17:23he is. Well, when we look into the Word
- 17:27of God, we should see him in US through a long form development
- 17:32in relationship where it's just like Paul said, he's like, who
- 17:38can save me from this wretched flesh?
- 17:40Isn't that interesting how he isolates the flesh out of his
- 17:43trifold nature? You know, he's like, who can
- 17:46save me from this wretched flesh, right?
- 17:48I go to do the thing which I, you know, wish not to do.
- 17:51I end up doing that right? And it's not a license to sin,
- 17:55but it is the reality that there's a deeper part of us that
- 17:59resonates with who the Spirit of God is and that we're willing
- 18:03and and submitted to him, moving and working through.
- 18:07It's not many times the image of the flesh that God will use to
- 18:11do miraculous things. It's sometimes it's the psyche
- 18:15of the man. Sometimes it's the act of simple
- 18:19generosity, compassion, humbling yourself.
- 18:25Just as the word says. If you want to turn away wrath,
- 18:29give a soft answer, takes your tongue and your heart and your
- 18:33mind to be in union to do that. That this is the deeper part of
- 18:36us that I believe accepts and presses into the Lord and holds
- 18:41on and we go through the way that He is made.
- 18:46Just as you mentioned earlier, Pete, you're climbing out of the
- 18:49well. You came equipped with A5 foot
- 18:52rope in a 20 foot well. So everything you brought to the
- 18:56table, it ain't working. But when he's in us, there
- 19:00should be fruit. And we're always going to have a
- 19:02bad day. All right, If you cut somebody
- 19:05off in traffic 5 minutes ago as you're listening to this driving
- 19:08your car and you thought why I ought to, it's the flesh.
- 19:13Don't be so hard on yourself, but what me and Peter are really
- 19:16trying to do here is, is bring the understanding and the
- 19:19questioning forward. We want to get you guys to think
- 19:22about this because I know what it feels like for somebody to
- 19:24not get me to critical think to just sit down, shut up, be a
- 19:28good little boy and nod your head when I speak that that's
- 19:32been enough. We've had enough of that.
- 19:34It's really time for us to open the can of worms of have we
- 19:39wrestled with this, dealt with it and considered in the deep
- 19:42inner part of us. And that's exactly what we're
- 19:45doing right here. You know, Pete, I'm going to
- 19:47pass it back to you and where we go from here, You know, and and
- 19:54the climax that has already been built over this however many
- 19:57parts series, we're getting to a scriptural dominance, right?
- 20:02Like the scripture has the final say.
- 20:04It's unarguable. We just need to make sure that
- 20:07we're in agreement.
