- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. A dramatic rescue played out on the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Burin Peninsula on the weekend after two pilot whales became
- 0:12Speaker 1: stranded on the beach at Point May. Residents came out
- 0:15Speaker 1: in numbers to help the creatures, even employing a backhoe
- 0:18Speaker 1: to dig a channel to get the stranded animals back
- 0:21Speaker 1: into the water. As of yesterday, the whales were back
- 0:24Speaker 1: in the water and had swum away. VOCM News has
- 0:28Speaker 1: reached out to DFO for an update. The CEO of
- 0:32Speaker 1: Oilco is bullish about the long-term prospects at Bullarm now
- 0:37Speaker 1: that an RFP has gone out to evaluate the specifications, design,
- 0:41Speaker 1: cost and construction for a floating dry dock at the site.
- 0:45Speaker 1: CEO Jim Keating says a floating dry dock will create
- 0:48Speaker 1: significant long-term capacity for ship building and repair at the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Bullarm Fabrication Site. He says the concept will allow for
- 0:56Speaker 1: increased flexibility to meet the needs of a variety of projects.
- 1:01Speaker 2: You can use a floating dry dock for most any
- 1:03Speaker 2: kinds of shape, sizes of vessels or marine infrastructure. We
- 1:08Speaker 2: think of a floating dry dock almost like an elevator.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It is basically used to convey or to lift or
- 1:14Speaker 2: to transfer a boat from the water to the shore
- 1:17Speaker 2: so you can do work on it. And then when
- 1:19Speaker 2: that repair or construction is finished, then you use the
- 1:23Speaker 2: floating dry dock to put that boat back in the water.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So it really is a strategic piece of equipment.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He says construction of the dry dock could begin by
- 1:32Speaker 1: the end of 2028. Newfoundland and Labrador may be the
- 1:37Speaker 1: only province in the country without a destination casino, but
- 1:41Speaker 1: the Atlantic Lottery Corporation would be willing to entertain the
- 1:45Speaker 1: motion should government wish to do so. A new book,
- 1:48Speaker 1: which looks at what the author concludes is the escalation
- 1:51Speaker 1: of gambling, also found that all other sub-jurisdictions have physical
- 1:55Speaker 1: sites for spins and the like. but not Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Corporation CEO Dallas McCready says current legislation does not allow
- 2:04Speaker 1: for such an establishment.
- 2:06Speaker 3: We work with government all the time on different policy decisions. Historically, Newfoundland,
- 2:12Speaker 3: Labrador has chosen not to have a destination casino. That's
- 2:17Speaker 3: a policy decision that's best left with the provinces. If
- 2:21Speaker 3: they were to choose that model, we'd be happy to
- 2:23Speaker 3: partner with them and operate that, but ultimately that's a
- 2:26Speaker 3: decision for the governments to make.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters
- 2:32Speaker 1: have lost their modern-day voice. Here's a report. What's up, Doc?
- 2:38Speaker 4: Oh, he was so close to nailing the voices famously
- 2:41Speaker 4: shaped by the great Mel Blanc. Listen, Buster. Eric Bowser
- 2:45Speaker 4: says he grew up watching Looney Tunes with his grandfather
- 2:48Speaker 4: in Canada and clearly was listening as well as watching.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Ain't I a stinker?
- 2:53Speaker 4: His characters in Looney Tunes.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I thought I saw a putty tat.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Got him a role in the movie Coyote vs. Acme,
- 2:59Speaker 4: but also Forgotten Island, Muppet Babies, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Eric Bowser won an Emmy for his voice work... Isn't
- 3:06Speaker 4: that lovely? He was 46.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
