Transcript
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the table at a dance competition?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Exactly what are the judges looking for anyway?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: This is Making the Impact, a dance competition podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Each week we'll cover a different topic related to the world of competitive dance from the perspective of the judges behind the table.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Hello everyone! Welcome to season five of Making the Impact.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Courtney Ortiz, and I'm here with my co-host, Leslie Mueller.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Season five, Courtney.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Can you even believe it?
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I can't.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I am so ready to be back in podcast world right now.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, I mean, I'm an avid podcast listener to a lot of different podcasts, and I know I get like super bummed when they're on hiatus or when, you know, I've I've listened to everything that they've put out and have to wait a week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Like I get very frustrated and annoyed.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And so I hope everybody out there is ready for our new season five.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We are coming at ya, and I can't wait to.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I hope you missed us.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: We missed y'all, and we've been very busy over here this summer.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I know that I have been uh more busy than usual.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm always busy in the summer, but this summer in particular just kind of threw me for a loop because as I announced at the end of season four, I went back to performing this summer.
- 1:24unknown: Yay!
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Crazy.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: And that was so much fun.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: I had the opportunity to go to St.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Louis and perform in the country's largest outdoor amphitheater, and it's called The Muni.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: It is sitting right inside the middle of Forest Park, which is a historic park in St.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely stunning.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: And I got to revisit a show that has been a part of my career, my entire career, West Side Story.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: And it was such a blast.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: So I think back in season end of season four, I wasn't able to say what show I was doing and what I was doing.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Now obviously it's it's over.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: It's over.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it was so much fun.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: I got to swing.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: I never got to go on stage, sadly, but I worked my booty off and I added a new skill to my resume, which was learning how to become a swing.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Which, spoiler alert, we're gonna have an episode all about what it's like to be a swing and understudy this season on the podcast.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, a little teaser and Yeah, what's crazy about the Muni is that it's a literal two-week process, which is insane.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Just especially as a swing too, I would assume, because like you don't even get the opportunity to really do it unless you're no put on stage for an injury or for, you know, sickness or whatever happens.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: So that's just crazy.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And I'm so glad you got to get out there and and work with some cool people.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And uh you also did some really awesome episodes this summer, or an awesome episode from the Muni, live from the Muni.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, we did.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: It was so, so, so cool.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And like speaking of that, we had some summer bonus episodes that happened over the summer, and we always kind of throw those, sprinkle those in there while you're missing us on our summer hiatus because there's just sometimes things that pop up where we feel like we have to jump on the topic discussion.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And that happened pretty much immediately following the end of season four this year.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: We there was a lot of buzz in the industry about uh choreographers speaking out to find and discover that their choreography had been stolen and plagiarized by someone without their consent.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: And two choreographers, Jason Williams and Jared Baker, spoke out about that on their social media, and it just started a huge buzz in the dance industry.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And Leslie and I looked at each other and said, We should have them on the podcast.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: We gotta talk about it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: We got to talk about it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: But unfortunately, season four had already ended, so we were like, What do we do?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And then we were like, you know what?
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I think it's time for a summer bonus episode.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and they were it was great.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: We had we split that one into two parts because there was just so much to talk about, and you know, we got a lot of good feedback from it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: So thank you, listeners, for for listening and, you know, spreading the word about this problem that is rampant in the industry that I think a lot of people don't necessarily think about until it happens.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So, you know, they were so generous with their time to share their experiences with us, and we hope to hear and see more from them soon, uh, because they are really making moves in the industry.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: And yes, I also was able to sit down with my cast mates while I was performing the summer at the Mooney.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: This was really the first time that I've been on a performance contract since our podcast launch.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And I thought, how cool would it be to hear from the cast and hear what their rehearsal process was like and hear what their journey in the show had been like, and then also hear about their professional careers because we had a lot of different cast members from dancers who were just breaking into the industry, who had literally just graduated last year, and this was one of their first shows as a professional.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And then there were seasoned veterans who have been doing this for 10 plus years, and to just hear about their journey and what it was like for them and to share their insight and guidance to the next generation, I thought was so inspiring and was so much fun to get to know my cast members even more on such a short contract.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: So if you haven't had a chance to listen to our three summer bonus episodes that launched throughout the summer, be sure to click back on your podcast app and give a listen to those.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: They are some really great episodes that I know you will enjoy.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And while Courtney was out and about and teaching and performing and a tiny bit of vacationing, I think, I was moving and working.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: And I didn't really have a summer.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And what is summer?
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Where is the beach?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: It was insane.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: But you just started your brand new job at NYCDA.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: That is absolutely huge.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: I am so excited for you.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I know we announced it at the end of season four.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: So how has that been for you?
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: What have you been doing?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Well, so NYCDA had their summer nationals here in New York City.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: So I didn't have to go very far, just down, you know, down the street to the Sheraton and spent my first, you know, summer with them uh working at Nationals, learning all about how they run their production.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And when I tell you, it is the largest dance production I have ever seen.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And literally the whole thing is a production from, you know, the registration coordinating to all of the special opportunities that we're able to provide.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: You know, I got to meet some really awesome people, not only people who attend NYCDA, but a lot of the people who who come and put on the special opportunities.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: You know, um, Chloe Arnold was there.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: They were, they were doing a syncapated ladies workshop.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: There were tons and tons and tons of college professors and deans of college programs for the NYCDA college scholarship audition.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: We were able to give away just an absurd amount of money in scholarships this summer, thanks to all of the participating schools.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: So yeah, if you are somebody who, you know, loves to dance at a high level and wants the best experiences that dance can give you, consider coming out to NYCDA uh this year.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I'll be out at a few events.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And, you know, like I said, we put on a really great show.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: There's some amazing opportunities uh throughout the year.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Um, there's intensives and there's scholarship auditions and there's all kinds of stuff.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: So I will see some of you out and about.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And I was grateful to see some of you this summer as well.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Met some podcast podcast fans at the event.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So very cool.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: I'm happy to be there and you know, just moving forward in the dance world.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, NYCDA is just like a household name in the dance industry.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: They've been around for so long, and Joe Lantieri is a legend.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: So it's just, I can't believe that you work for Joe Lantiri.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: It is the coolest thing ever.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Well, and the coolest thing is that Joel Antieri is a really cool guy.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Like, he's super nice, he's one of the best bosses I've ever had, just kind and funny and you know, uh full of wisdom, and just he's he's a wonderful person.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So like I and I know everybody knows that.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: It's like if you've ever met Joe, that is exactly how you feel.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So I I'm not surprised there, but it is very cool to, you know, be a part of this legacy that he's he's started.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And this is our 30th year this year.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: So that's that's kind of amazing.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: You know, I guess I was I'm 38.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I was eight when NYCDA started, which is just crazy to think of like how much it must have evolved evolved since then.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, and to be able to be a part of it now is is really cool.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: So yay.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Yay! I'm so proud of you.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And you're chatting with me from a distance because officially as of season five, we no longer live in the same state.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: We do not.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: And I mean, like Courtney and I used to live, I think it was something like a mile and a half away from each other.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: It's like a very small distance.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: 30 minutes to get there, but it was a mile away from each other.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, but now I live in the beautiful garden state of New Jersey in Montclair, New Jersey.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: So anybody up here in northern Jersey, uh, I may see you around somewhere.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: There's a dance studio just down the street from my house.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: I'm considering going to take a ballet class.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Wish me luck.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It has been a while.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Well, I hope you're settling in in your new apartment and enjoying the scenery out in the suburbia area of New Jersey.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: It's probably a huge change from New York City.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, but you know, 14 years in New York City is a long time, and looking forward to more years up here in in New Jersey.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I'm still very close.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: I'm essentially as close to Manhattan as I was when I was in Queens.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: So wow.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You know, it's just a matter of it's easier to get in the car now to go to Manhattan, whereas in Queens you just got on the train.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's good.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: So there was there was a little bit of dance in my summer, but a lot of it involved, you know, moving and working and doing all kinds of onboarding, you know, for NYCDA.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited to get back to podcasting because we're talking about all things dance, and there's got to be more dance in my life.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: I am as well, and there's so much to cover in this season.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: But before we jump into some of the things that are coming your way this season in season five of Making the Impact, I have a special announcement to share.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Drum roll, please.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: You can't hear my drum roll, but there it is.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I want to let everybody know that I will be joining the faculty of the Streets Dance Convention and Competition this upcoming 2024 season.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: And I am absolutely thrilled to be joining a new convention.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: I am very sad to say that I will no longer be at Revel Dance Convention.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: So if you are planning on seeing me there, I won't see you, unfortunately.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: And don't worry, I am very sad about that.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: But I am so pumped for this new opportunity and this new adventure to join another fantastic dance convention organization that exists in our dance world.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: They have a lot of locations.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: I will be at all 14 of their events this season, which is really exciting.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to be out every single weekend sharing my love of jazz dance.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: I'll be teaching jazz, I'll occasionally be teaching musical theater.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: I will be on every single judging panel at their competition.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Can't wait for that.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: I also love to share that the streets supports and uses impact dance adjudicators, which is huge.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: I cannot wait to give away the Making the Impact Award, me, myself personally, at every single streets event this season.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: It's going to be so awesome.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: So I am very thrilled to share that announcement with everyone.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: And I hope that anybody that was planning to attend a streets event is even more excited now because I will see you there.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: And then please make sure you come say hey to me because I'd love to say hey to you.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they are super lucky to have you.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And, you know, Streets goes to a whole bunch of different places around the country.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So I think it's going to be really cool that you get to bring your jazz dance influence to new places, new people, new dancers.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: And like you said, give away the Making the Impact Award, which we are obsessed with.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Yes, we are obsessed with it.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: And I want to just give a shout out to the Streets for supporting IDA and letting that be a part of your organization and your events.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I know that when they reached out to me last season saying, hey, we want to have one IDA judge on every panel, I was absolutely blown away by that because dance conventions usually always have their faculty judge at the event, which is absolutely acceptable and makes all the sense.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: There are some fantastic dance educators that are teaching the kids, so they should have, of course, be sitting in that judging panel as well.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: But as we know, not everybody is a great judge, and not everyone wants to judge.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Let's be real.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: So I think that as the the industry has evolved and grown, the expectation for the quality critiques has just really it's people want that.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: People want that now in the industry.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: And when the streets reached out, they really wanted to continue to elevate their judging panels.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And they thought of IDA, which I was absolutely honored.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So we had one IDA judge on every streets panel last season.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: This season I will be one of the IDA judges along with another IDA judge on their panels this season.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: So it's really exciting for uh the growth of our industry, and I'm excited to partner with them on IDA's end and on my end as a new faculty member.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to do it.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Well, before we jump in, Courtney, like you said, to uh some of the new stuff, can we give some shout-outs to some of our Making the Impact Awards uh award winners from the end of the season?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Some of some of us didn't get you know shouted out because the award happened, you know, after after our last uh last podcast.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: So we'd love to give some shout-outs.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, let's give a few shout-outs to our Making the Impact Award winners.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And for all of our listeners who are unfamiliar, the Making the Impact Award goes out to one dance every event at any IDA affiliated competition that has at least one IDA judge on the judging panel.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: This will be selected unanimously by the judges on the panel that are IDA affiliated, and it can go to any age, level, size dance that happens.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So it's that one dance that we just cannot stop thinking about, whether it was through choreography, execution technique, we wanted to recognize you.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: So the first Making the Impact Award winner is going to Jaden Bastille from Spotlight Dance Studio in Taunton, Massachusetts for her solo, The Producer.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And two of our nationals winners from Star Talent Productions Nationals event in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Congratulations to the ML Dance Academy from Reynoldsburg, Ohio for their duo Cosmic Dream.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: And from Diva Dance Competitions Nationals event in Foxwood, Connecticut.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Congrats to Moorlock School of Dance from East Harford, Connecticut for their small group, Primordial Sororitas.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: And this is a fun fact, actually, about that last dance.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: They won the Making the Impact Award twice last season for the same dance.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Twice.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: How cool is that?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Different judging panels, right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: What?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: So that that truly made the impact uh Moorlock School of Dance.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Great job.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: And one other special announcement that we have to share about our Making the Impact Award is this summer we decided to add another layer to this fantastic award.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: We added our fan favorite judges choice contest into the mix over the summer.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: And what that means is all of the Making the Impact winners throughout the 2023 regional season were able to participate in our social media contest, which then allowed viewers and fans to vote for their fan favorite dance.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And the winner of the fan favorite contest would receive an entire full-length studio spotlight episode in season five of Making the Impact.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: How amazing is this opportunity?
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I love it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: We had so many great participants.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Obviously, the Making the Impact Awards were all dances that judges loved.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: So it was some tough competition, but we are excited to share that the fan favorite winner from the 2023 season was Stage Door School of Dance in Long Island, New York for their tap solo, Discarded, performed by Shea Lavery.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned for their episode coming to you guys next week.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: We are excited for this additional feature, and we really hope that you guys are too.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: And we had lots of contests over the summertime, and they were all voting contests.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: And you can't forget about our podcast cover art contest that happens every single season, where you get to now see new beautiful dancers gracing our cover art for season five.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: We had over a hundred submissions and you all voted, and we're so happy with the new look of our season five cover art.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: We'd like to give a shout out to the dancers featured.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Congrats to Reagan from Dance Fusion Studios in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and Paulina Haynes from the ML Dance Academy in Reynoldsburg, Ohio.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Like the other contests, we had a lot of submissions.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: It was a tough, it was tough.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: We had some really beautiful pictures.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: So, you know, this comes around every year.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: So gather your best dance photos from the season.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: And when summer next year rolls around, send them in.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Yes, don't forget, put it on your calendar.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: This usually happens towards the end of July.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: So mark your calendars and stay connected with us on our social media if you want to be considered as a cover art dancer for season six.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And Courtney, a few more just recaps of the year of the season.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: We have over almost 3,000 members in our Facebook group.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Woo! What?
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: That's insane.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: So thanks everybody for joining us there and having productive conversations about dance and about competitive dance.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: We love everybody over there.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: So join us if you haven't already.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's Making the Impact a Dance Competition Podcast community on Facebook.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: You do have to answer a few entrance questions to be approved.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: And feel free to send away, invite whoever you want that is affiliated into the dance world.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: We'd love to have you chatting with us over there.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And on Instagram, we've hit a milestone of over 10,000 followers.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Finally, oh my God.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: How quick.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, do we have a little check mark yet?
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: No, I think you have to buy a check mark now.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like eh.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Well, 10,000 followers is nothing to sniff at.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: That is that happened recently.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: And I remember looking at the just, you know, scrolling over to the IDA page and and looking twice.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: And I was I texted Courtney and I was like, wait, when did we get this many followers?
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: It was amazing.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: It's funny because like I feel like everyone wants to hit the 10K because then it's it stops totaling your follower count by like per person.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: And it just like lives in that 10K world and increases every hundred uh followers.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: So it is nice to see it like that.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: But I think back in the day of Instagram, you wanted to have, I forget, I might have been 10K or it might have been a little less.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: But if you had 10K or more, then you were able to do the swipe up feature in your story.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's old school.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Now we've eliminated that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: It was.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: It was like, oh my God, you can swipe up and it'll take you out to a different source and a link.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: But now everybody wanted that.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: So now they've eliminated that.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: And then like now you have to pay for the blue check mark.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: And it's just like, what's going on?
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Well But we're happy for our 10K follows.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: We are.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: So follow us over there for weekly judges tips, podcast episode launches, and to find out which events our IDA judges will be at through the upcoming season.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: Season four of Making the Impact was such a hit.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: We had 41 episodes and we had our three summer bonus episodes.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: And heading into season five, we will be starting with episode 151.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: And FYI, you can click next immediately after you listen to this to give a listen to our first episode of the season, which is Lyrical versus Contemporary 2.0.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited for this because we've been talking about doing the 2.0 for forever.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: And fun fact, our lyrical versus contemporary, which is from season one, episode four, our fourth episode ever in existence, has been the leading number one episode in all of Making an Impact history.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: However, we have a strong second place winner.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: Actually, they're tied, they're very close to being tied right now.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Like within three listens or something, right?
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: It's something ridiculous.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: It's insane how close, how close this is.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: And that one is.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: And that episode is an episode from the past season.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Season four, episode 127: Competition Trends: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: See, I can't believe it.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Yes, I mean, truly.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: And you have to think about it, like the season one episode of Lyrical versus Contemporary has been around now for three years.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: So they've had three years time on the market for people to listen.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: This one has only been around for a handful of months at this point.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Eight months.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Several months, right?
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: So it's impressive how how uh many listens we've received on that one and that it's truly about to surpass Lyrical verse contemporary.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: I wonder though, I do wonder if it's ever gonna surpass it.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Well, now I'm wondering if our lyrical verse contemporary 2.0 will get as much, will be as popular as our first lyrical verse contemporary.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, some people do say that the sequel sometimes is better than the original, so we'll see.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: We'll find out.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: I can't wait.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So everybody, make sure you go give a listen to our latest episode of season five.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: All right, Courtney.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: What is coming up?
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: We have an amazing season planned for you guys.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: We we love our brainstorming sessions.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: We we sit down and brainstorm for literally like eight hours at a time when we were we're thinking about this season.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: So hard.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: Takes forever, multiple.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Um, this season it was on I was on an Amtrak like both times with horrible internet, and we kept losing each other and it took extra long.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: It did, but you know, that's also because there's so Many good topics, and you know, trying to make sure we're catering to the needs of the greater industry, but the needs and the wants of our listeners specifically.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: You know, I think I think we've curated a very, very good season overall.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited to share with everybody just a few little little things about this next season.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: So one of the things that we're bringing back in season five is our very popular studio spotlight episode.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: So, like we mentioned, we have our fan favorite episode that's actually going to kick things off next week with Stage Door School of Dance and their full episode feature after winning the Making the Impact Award.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And we are excited to continue on with other studio spotlights throughout season five.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I know that I've received so many messages and have been contacted personally by different dance studios and different teachers who have said, your studio spotlights are fantastic.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: It has actually made me rethink how to structure my schedule for my studio.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: It has added this class to my schedule in the studio.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: It has completely shifted this for me.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Like so many eye-opening things have happened just from our studio spotlight.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: I can't believe how many people are listening and taking in all of the knowledge from different studios that are popular in the industry, who are super successful, that are known in the industry.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: And then these studios around the country are being inspired by what they're hearing on these episodes and implementing it into their studio.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, we truly are making the impact.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't wait to hear from some more amazing studios this season.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: They happen fairly regularly.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: So, you know, keep keep up with us.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: But this season we also have some new sponsors with products and services that we believe in.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: So stay tuned for that.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: We're not going to tease any of those quite yet, but they're coming.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and we couldn't do this without them.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Sponsors help keep our business up and running.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: So we're always grateful and appreciative.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: And like I said, anything we advertise, we believe in.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And or we have used ourselves.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: So can't wait to hear from them coming up this season.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: So one of the new services that we are adding on to our online critique service is now an opportunity for the studio owners, the teachers, the choreographers, and the aspiring choreographers.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: We are creating a choreography mentorship program.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: And what that means is that you will be paired with a judge that is specific to the genre of your submitted dance piece, and they will give you choreography feedback on things that will help you become a better choreographer throughout this creation process.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: All of the things that you probably don't get critiques on at a dance competition since we're super focused on critiquing the dancers.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Now you, as the choreographer, can receive those crucial elements for feedback from a professional.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Some of the things that our judges will speak on in the choreography critique includes the proper use of the stage, the proper use of levels, or transitions, dynamics and shading within their movements, formations, visuals and spacing, song choice, costuming choice, genre appropriate movement, level of difficulty, trick-to-transition ratio, and so much more.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: You will be paired with a judge who specializes in your dance genre, like mentioned, and they will be your mentor through the season.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: All submissions will include a three video submission package where you can send in progress videos for new feedback with adjustments throughout the creation process.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: We're still finalizing and working out the kinks for this brand new service that is about to launch in the industry, and it will be officially launching in September.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: So if you are excited as a choreographer and creative to get more feedback on how you can become even more successful at your competition choreography before the season starts, then head on over to Impact Dance Adjudicators.com/slash online critiques and stay tuned for our official launch of this brand new service.

- 28:06SPEAKER_01: And I truly believe it's because of what we created.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: We have a very thorough pre-screening process that evaluates all of the judges before we approve them onto our roster.

- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Well, listeners, we have some really exciting episodes coming up for you this season.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: And we might share just a teeny bit right now.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: What do you think, Court?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that um we've had a lot of episode requests, especially in our Facebook group and also throughout the summer.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: I think as people have been listening back to old episodes, then I've been getting many messages of, hey, have you done this episode yet?
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: You should add this to season five.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: So we have, like Leslie said, we've curated a fantastic season ahead.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: What are some of the episodes that you're excited about that are coming, coming soon?
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Oh well, one of them that I I laugh about it every time we talk about it because it's it's been like people have been pushing for this for so long and we're finally giving it to them, which is pay rates for the professional dance world.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Everyone in our group, literally every time, they're like, when are you doing an episode on pay rates in the industry?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Tell tell us how much you get paid.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: First of all, it's not much.
- 29:56unknown: Just kidding.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: But no, I'm excited about it because I because I know that people are interested.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: And we clearly, you and I have worked in multiple avenues of the dance world.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: We have so many connections who work in other avenues that we've never experienced.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Like we have this information.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, it's there's no point in being a gatekeeper of information.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: When we have it, we can share it, we can give the best practices and best advice to people out there who may not have the connections that we have.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: So I'm excited that, you know, we're finally going to tackle this um topic.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: And I I absolutely know of some of our uh Making the Impact podcast group fans who are are so excited right now to hear that we're doing this.

- 30:45SPEAKER_01: But sorry about it.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: You gotta wait a little bit until that episode's coming your way.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: So it will happen at some point in this season.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Stay tuned for that.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Some other really exciting episodes that we have in store for season five are an episode all about duo trios, which I'm excited about.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: And all about award ceremonies, because let's be real, sometimes they are beyond confusing and no one knows what's happening during the award ceremony.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna talk all about that.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: We're gonna help you out, new parents, new dance parents.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Don't worry, we got you.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: We have a hip hop episode versus jazz funk.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: I think that will be an interesting discussion.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: And also another really great one minis who peek too early.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: Hot topic in the industry.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Hot topic, yeah.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And so we have so many more past that, plus our studio spotlights, plus some random stuff we might just throw in because we can.
