- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:06Our goal is to not only share our sermons, but to go beyond
- 0:09the sermon in conversations about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in our lives and our community.
- 0:15You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:17fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:21conversation. This was the most relatable
- 0:27illustration that I think you've ever used in a sermon.
- 0:31The pickle on the burger. Pickle on the burger for me.
- 0:34Amazing, right? For me and I wasn't expecting
- 0:37you to actually add depth to it in regards to like the meat
- 0:41Patty being the most important part and in the center and same
- 0:44with the scripture sandwiched in between couple of sections about
- 0:48spiritual gifts, but. That came later.
- 0:50Yeah, it was much later. Well, but.
- 0:51Oh, the thought even like as I was reflecting on things and
- 0:55stuff, it was like, I was like, how am I going to intro this
- 1:03sermon on love without talking about relationships or, I don't
- 1:12know. Somehow as I was reading through
- 1:13the past, I was like, and just thinking about it as like, yeah,
- 1:18it just kind of jumps in there. Like, it doesn't if you're, but
- 1:22if you're thinking about First Corinthians 13 as the wedding
- 1:25passage, it seems just squashed in there.
- 1:30No, it's not I I liked it and you're right, it's sometimes not
- 1:34put on the menu like described for the burger, which is the
- 1:39most annoying thing because I believe it's probably the most
- 1:41divisive part that you could put.
- 1:44You don't have like super anti lettuce.
- 1:46I know there's some anti tomato people, but there's way more
- 1:49anti pickle people than anti tomato people and so baffles me.
- 1:54I don't know why diners don't put it on the menu and they're
- 1:58like, we assumed you wanted half of a pickle on your plate so
- 2:01that the juice could soak into the bread of your sandwich.
- 2:04And all of your French fries. So disgusting.
- 2:08And I'm like, I'm, I'm so sensitive to it that like,
- 2:11Rebecca, I get like, spicy chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A.
- 2:16Yeah. And it comes with Pickles.
- 2:17And it's also not on the menu, right, For being on the
- 2:20sandwich. And I always have her remove it.
- 2:22And one time she forgot to ask for it and she took the Pickles
- 2:25off herself and gave it to me. And I was like, juice is.
- 2:28Already there. Yeah.
- 2:29It's bread. I can deal with that.
- 2:31I can. No, but no.
- 2:34It's not my favorite. Oh my gosh.
- 2:35But yeah, so very relatable to me.
- 2:39I'm glad. I'm glad we were finally able to
- 2:41connect in a certain ministry. Yeah, You know, it took four
- 2:43years, but yeah. So I I enjoyed that.
- 2:48I was surprised math has been hitting me hard lately.
- 2:54You can you can talk to the youth about that.
- 2:57But like number, I connect more with numbers now.
- 3:01It just gives me more of a solidified thing to give me
- 3:06context, I guess. Sure.
- 3:08And so when you said 18 weeks of this year will be about
- 3:12spiritual gifts and you preach maybe around 44 for the year,
- 3:21right? Yeah.
- 3:22If you don't count like special like Maundy Thursday and Good
- 3:25Friday. Yeah, I I aim to preach
- 3:27somewhere like 42 to 44 Sundays. Yeah.
- 3:31So we're looking at like 40% of the calendar year ish is gonna
- 3:37be spiritual gifts. Yeah.
- 3:39Hey, how are we going to talk about that on the podcast?
- 3:42Oh, we're not going to do it in the summer.
- 3:44No podcasts in the summer? Or maybe podcasts in the summer?
- 3:48I mean, maybe we'll do some selected.
- 3:52Like sporadic pod episodes? And kind of condense some
- 3:55things. The other thing I've been
- 3:57thinking about is though, I think maybe at the end of June,
- 4:02I might want to have a, a gathering of some sort where
- 4:08people can ask questions or we can solicit questions ahead of
- 4:11time and kind of do some question and answer question
- 4:14response kind of thing related to before we really get in depth
- 4:19into the actual like individual gifts, which is what the summer
- 4:24is going to be like. But is that just as we're kind
- 4:27of like getting this framework in our mind to give people a few
- 4:30weeks to chew on it and then do like AQ and R kind of thing
- 4:34after church maybe, oh, nice, maybe have a cookout or
- 4:37something. And.
- 4:38We post that on the pod. Could we?
- 4:40Yeah. Well, that was one of my
- 4:42thoughts. If we recorded that, that would
- 4:45be maybe a helpful thing for people.
- 4:47Oh no, that's a great idea. Yeah, 'cause I think the, the
- 4:51tricky part is the not feel like it's repetitive, which I don't
- 4:57think it will. But then you're also absorbing,
- 5:00especially if some of the stuff is so new to people absorbing
- 5:03all of this new stuff. And then like, where's the time
- 5:06to chew on it and then attempt to practice it?
- 5:11But I was, I was even enjoying the discussion.
- 5:14Sunday School Group is going through a series by Tyler
- 5:19Stanton. State in that state in the
- 5:22familiar stranger. The Familiar Stranger, also
- 5:24about the Holy Spirit, and I've been listening to that book has
- 5:28been really, really good. Yeah.
- 5:30Highly recommend. Even if you're in the class and
- 5:32go. I feel like the book touches on
- 5:35things that we talk about in class, but there's so much more
- 5:39going on in the book. It's not like class just
- 5:42summarizes the book and then we talk about.
- 5:44It yeah. So I I that pivots a little.
- 5:47Bit. Here where we are in that Sunday
- 5:50School class, I think as of this past Sunday because of the first
- 5:55two sessions cover like the first six chapters of the book
- 6:00and then like the session I taught this week because you and
- 6:04Angela bailed on your teaching responsibilities.
- 6:09Yep, Cancun. No, in their defense, they had
- 6:16taken the the high school seniors on a camping overnight
- 6:21backpacking trip to kind of send them off into their summer and
- 6:26whatever lies ahead. But anyway, so this this Sunday,
- 6:30we did 1 chapter one session. OK on discernment, on hearing.
- 6:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh yeah.
- 6:40So, but as I was listening to the the study session he did, I
- 6:45was like, Oh yeah, there's a lot of this that's almost verbatim
- 6:48or like a condensed operation of what he talks about.
- 6:51Awesome. Yeah, because it's really good.
- 6:53So that's why. Like even if you just go back
- 6:55and read through the 1st 6 chapters, it's really good book.
- 6:59And I was surprised I didn't realize make the connection of I
- 7:02knew they were like in the talked about in the same
- 7:04circles, but I didn't realize that Tyler, the author of A
- 7:07familiar stranger took over Church of John, Mark Comer.
- 7:12Yeah, it is practicing the way that we've done multiple series
- 7:15on in this church and to hear that story and how God made that
- 7:20all happen and then to hear miracle stories and yeah, it's
- 7:23just yeah, really awesome and encouraging.
- 7:25Yeah, Tyler also leads the US chapter, I guess. 24720. 47
- 7:32Prayer, which is connected to, you know, Pete Gregg, who when I
- 7:37did that series on how to hear God, his book was one of the
- 7:41influential ones. So that one I'd recommend to,
- 7:44yeah, anybody who is interested in.
- 7:47Yeah, so since we'll we'll be and the theme of Holy Spirit and
- 7:53spiritual gifts a lot this year, I think he may have touched on
- 7:58as we talked about what it was going to be.
- 8:01But why do you think it's so important?
- 8:06And I would say also so urgent because it seems like, yes, it's
- 8:09important. So we could do like a Holy
- 8:11Spirit series this year, mentions the gifts and then
- 8:15touchback on it next year. But why do you feel like or why
- 8:18do you sense that like God is leading us to really push into
- 8:23this? Well, we're going to get into
- 8:26that a good bit this Sunday. Spoil No, it's, it's fine.
- 8:32People can hear it twice. I don't mind.
- 8:34But but I think I think this is a key part of what God wants to
- 8:41do in our church specifically. But but I'd say even more
- 8:45broadly than that, you know, there's been a resurgence in
- 8:49recent years in talking about spiritual disciplines and that
- 8:54kind of stuff. And, you know, that started
- 8:57probably probably 20 or 30 years ago.
- 9:01Richard Foster released his classic book, The Celebration of
- 9:05Discipline, and that kind of started a conversation there.
- 9:10Dallas Willard picked that up. He had, he talked about the
- 9:14disciplines a lot. He had a book called The Spirit
- 9:17of the Disciplines. It kind of gets to the heart
- 9:20motivation underneath it. And then, you know, more
- 9:25recently a lot of people have been starting to pick up on
- 9:27that. You got John Mark Comer
- 9:29practicing the way John Tyson wrote a book called Beautiful
- 9:33Resistance that talks about how the spiritual practices are, you
- 9:39know, things we can do daily and weekly that are acts of
- 9:41resistance against the Kingdom of this world right now.
- 9:46There's been a resurgence in that and, and I think that's
- 9:49been good, but it's always kind of left me feeling like, but
- 9:53there's got to be something after that.
- 9:55There's got to be something that these disciplines are leading
- 9:58towards. And when I heard John Thompson
- 10:03talk for the first time last summer about bringing these this
- 10:08idea of spiritual disciplines and spiritual gifts together in
- 10:13the life of Jesus, it all kind of clicked for me.
- 10:16And so in this season of of God revealing who he's calling us to
- 10:22be as a church, it felt like this was this was the time, this
- 10:27was the natural outgrowth of some of where we've been, but
- 10:32then also where we need to go. And so I thought about doing
- 10:37these two series more split up, like doing what we're doing this
- 10:42spring and then doing the spiritual guests either in the
- 10:47fall or maybe even next January or whatever.
- 10:51But I had this feeling like it was kind of just teasing out the
- 10:57idea and then creating a vacuum and, and in a vacuum, you know,
- 11:05all kinds of things rush in to fill that void.
- 11:09And so it's felt like God was saying, no, do it all go deep,
- 11:15do it well. It's important enough to spend
- 11:17this much time on it. It's important enough to to make
- 11:20it Sunday morning, you know, right in our sermon series, you
- 11:26know, this isn't something that I wanted to do just as a add on
- 11:30thing midweek where if you're interested, come on out.
- 11:33I felt like it was important enough for all of our people to
- 11:36to need to hear it because I think it should shift the way we
- 11:39do church and. You mentioned it not being like
- 11:44an optional midweek type thing, but I know that an optional
- 11:48midweek type thing. The Forge has been going on this
- 11:53school year and they've been diving into some of this
- 11:58material. And So what?
- 12:03What's something if if it doesn't, you know, impose on the
- 12:07privacy of someone else? But like, sure, what's something
- 12:09that's been like a surprising fruit from that time that
- 12:13encourages you for more of a congregation wide dive into
- 12:18this? It's been amazing to watch
- 12:20people as the light bulb has kind of come on and, and they've
- 12:26realized, oh, these things that I've always just kind of thought
- 12:29were just part of me and, and my Christianity or my relationship
- 12:34with Jesus or whatever. These are actually places where
- 12:39God has gifted me. And that's not the same for
- 12:42everybody else. And so it explains a lot about
- 12:48what we'll call in a couple weeks, gift tension, where, you
- 12:53know, there are certain things about the way we view the world
- 12:58of the church and all that kind of stuff that's been shaped by
- 13:00how God has gifted us. That's not necessarily true of
- 13:05other people's experience. We don't recognize that though,
- 13:08because we just, that's the water we swim in.
- 13:11And so that's how we experience the world.
- 13:15And that can cause tension. It can cause conflict in the
- 13:20church. So we're going to talk about
- 13:22that in a few weeks. But that's been also kind of a
- 13:26light bulb moment for a lot of people.
- 13:28Like, oh, I do that because this is a gift and you actually don't
- 13:37do that. And that's OK.
- 13:39Like some of the examples we've used broadly is just, you know,
- 13:45when I sat down with the Forge back in September, I kind of
- 13:50laid out the plan for the year and they looked at them.
- 13:55So we're going to read all of those books.
- 13:59I said, yeah, aren't you excited?
- 14:01Because me, as someone who's gifted in teaching nerd, I am a
- 14:06nerd and it's part of how God's made me and gifted.
- 14:09Yeah, I'm very. Grateful for nerds, I need them
- 14:13but like the. The idea that that would be, you
- 14:19know, a challenge even for some of our people, that it's not
- 14:23natural for others of our people that for them to actually pick
- 14:27up a book and read is a discipline for them.
- 14:31It was kind of one of those eye opening moments even just for
- 14:34me, like, oh right, I know this. But when it actually plays out
- 14:40in front of me, it's like, right, I need to be sensitive to
- 14:45what feels natural to me but isn't natural to me, and give
- 14:52grace and space for that to be true for other people in other
- 14:54ways. Yeah.
- 14:57Oh, that's good. The the core of the message.
- 15:01Yes. A holy love.
- 15:04How would you give someone that you know been in the church
- 15:11feels like they're a loving person maybe in comparison to
- 15:15the world? How do we give them a practical
- 15:22way to check their heart and also move forward in holy love?
- 15:29Like to not assume that they're already doing it just because
- 15:32they don't curse people out. Yeah.
- 15:34And also to intentionally, if after hearing this message,
- 15:39realizing the importance of that being the foundation, how do
- 15:43they make intentional steps forward to make sure that that
- 15:46is foundational for them? I think for me it often starts
- 15:51with motivation, checking my motivations because anytime my
- 16:00motivations are driven around me or my ego or what I get out of
- 16:08something, that's not holy love because holy love is by
- 16:14definition other oriented. It's self giving.
- 16:18That's what we see in Jesus. That's what we see described in
- 16:22First Corinthians 13. And so checking motivations, am
- 16:26I doing this because it benefits myself or am I doing it because
- 16:30it benefits another? You know, that can be as simple
- 16:34as holding the door open for somebody because you want to
- 16:40love them and honor them rather than just rushing on to whatever
- 16:44your next thing was. Or as complicated and involved
- 16:50as strategically and intentionally relating to your
- 16:56neighbors and, you know, coming up with a plan of how you're
- 17:02going to open your home and invite them in to be able to
- 17:08show them love and that kind of stuff.
- 17:10Even though it's going to cost you something to share a meal or
- 17:14Createspace or whatever it is. I think those are a couple of
- 17:19things that that I tend to look at what, what's the motivation
- 17:21in my heart? Is it me or others?
- 17:23And who benefits from this? I think the hardest part of the
- 17:29whole conversation about love being at the center is what we
- 17:36do when we realize we haven't been doing that.
- 17:41And that might not be generally, it might just be in a certain
- 17:47relationship and. And what do we have to do in
- 17:53order to correct that? Yeah.
- 17:57You know, it might mean going to someone who has offended you and
- 18:05starting the conversation. It might mean choosing to
- 18:10forgive someone for what they've done without them coming to you.
- 18:17It might mean that you need to go and apologize to someone,
- 18:22even if you feel like maybe they should be the one coming to
- 18:25apologize to you. Because most ruptures, there's,
- 18:29there's hurt on both sides. And so choosing to engage,
- 18:35choosing to, as Andrew Forrest says in his book of the same
- 18:40title, you know, to let love go first, I think it's probably the
- 18:45hardest part. Good book cover?
- 18:49I haven't gotten past the cover yet, but I want to.
- 18:52I'm several captives in, but it's it's one I'm working my way
- 18:57through. But you know, his point is that
- 18:59if we really are going to love people, particularly people who
- 19:05have hurt us, people who disagree with us, the way we're
- 19:08going to win them to Jesus isn't by persuading them.
- 19:12It's not by judging them, it's not by withdrawing from them,
- 19:17it's going to be by making the first move out of love and going
- 19:23to them. Yeah, I would say if if you
- 19:27struggle with forgiveness, love, did you?
- 19:31Turn your nail. If you struggle with forgiveness
- 19:36or you you're aware of that tension within a relationship,
- 19:40love goes first. Andrew Forrest and Either
- 19:44Forgive or Forgiveness by Timothy Keller are both really
- 19:49good resources. And even though I haven't read
- 19:51The Love Goes First, I heard him speak and give like a general,
- 19:55you know, so I'm completely ignorant to what's inside.
- 19:59But yeah. Because it's not easy.
- 20:01And yet we're forgiven for all of our mess.
- 20:08Just like it cost Jesus something, for that forgiveness
- 20:11to be possible, it's a good chance it's going to cost us
- 20:14something. Well, that's our conversation
- 20:16for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 20:20We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 20:23To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode,
- 20:25or to join the conversation, you can head over to

- 20:34conversation.
