- 0:14Speaker 2: message and data rates may apply.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Back here on this long orange Monday, here on Sports
- 0:22Speaker 3: Radio AM thirteen nundreds, and we were hearing from coach sart.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I want to hear a little more from him this hour,
- 0:26Speaker 3: then we'll hear some more next hour. It was just
- 0:29Speaker 3: about the physicality of his team, and uh, does he
- 0:34Speaker 3: feel as though his team has become much more physical
- 0:38Speaker 3: on both sides of the line of scrimmage since the
- 0:41Speaker 3: Georgia game.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Really and truly over the last month.
- 0:43Speaker 4: I think it's gone upward. I think from an upward
- 0:46Speaker 4: from a consistency standpoint. I think we've had moments or
- 0:49Speaker 4: we've been a very physical football team. But you guys
- 0:53Speaker 4: can recall early in the season me talking about we're
- 0:55Speaker 4: giving up too many leaky yards in the run game,
- 0:58Speaker 4: you know.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And we talked about on on.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Defense, and we talked about on offense, you know, our
- 1:02Speaker 4: ability to run the ball consistently, especially when our opponent
- 1:05Speaker 4: knows we're going to run the ball. You haven't heard
- 1:08Speaker 4: those things out of my mouth here for about the
- 1:10Speaker 4: last month.
- 1:10Speaker 1: You know, we haven't.
- 1:11Speaker 4: I've been talking about leaky yards in the run game
- 1:13Speaker 4: and letting running backs fall forward. I haven't been talking
- 1:16Speaker 4: about our inability to run it when our opponents know
- 1:18Speaker 4: we're going to run it. So I think there's been
- 1:20Speaker 4: a level of consistency in our physicality that that has grown,
- 1:25Speaker 4: and I think that stems from practice. Our practice habits
- 1:28Speaker 4: have improved as the season's gone on. We're practicing better
- 1:32Speaker 4: defensively than we have all year. I touched on a
- 1:35Speaker 4: couple weeks about ago about how physical practice has been
- 1:38Speaker 4: and even the chippiness at practice, which I think again
- 1:41Speaker 4: is a great sign that we have the energy to
- 1:44Speaker 4: do that. But I think all those are byproducts of
- 1:46Speaker 4: why we're seeing a level of physicality for four quarters
- 1:50Speaker 4: from our guys, not just kind of in spots where
- 1:52Speaker 4: maybe we were early in the year. I think it's
- 1:54Speaker 4: there's a level of consistency now that's better than it's
- 1:57Speaker 4: been all season long.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Okay, there's He was also asked as well about managing that.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Here's another one of those portal questions. Managing the portal
- 2:13Speaker 3: a little more strenuously because the season is ongoing.
- 2:19Speaker 2: How you deal with that.
- 2:20Speaker 3: And also as for an update on Kelvin Banks who
- 2:22Speaker 3: had the ankle injury.
- 2:24Speaker 4: That is a challenging component. You know, there's it's like
- 2:29Speaker 4: I used to say that I use this term, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 4: it's kind of like crying from a yacht. Some people
- 2:34Speaker 4: use champagne problems. We're we're a competing for an SEC championship,
- 2:43Speaker 4: We're more than likely going to be in the college
- 2:45Speaker 4: football playoff.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And yes, is.
- 2:48Speaker 4: It a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes
- 2:50Speaker 4: to dealing with the portal, Sure, but I'd much rather
- 2:53Speaker 4: be I'd much rather this be my problem than a
- 2:56Speaker 4: team that isn't competing for a conference championship, maybe isn't
- 3:00Speaker 4: going to a bowl game or going to a lesser
- 3:02Speaker 4: bowl and saying, hey, I got all the time in
- 3:04Speaker 4: the world to recruit all these portal guys, you know,
- 3:07Speaker 4: so I'll take the situation we're in compared to to
- 3:10Speaker 4: the to the ladder.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Knowingly that we don't make a living in the portal.
- 3:15Speaker 4: You know, we try to recruit high school kids because
- 3:17Speaker 4: we develop relationships with them over time. We understand there
- 3:21Speaker 4: is some advantage to the portal from a free agency
- 3:25Speaker 4: standpoint to stop gap some of the depth issues we
- 3:28Speaker 4: might have on our roster. But we probably don't spend
- 3:32Speaker 4: as much time on the portal as a lot of
- 3:34Speaker 4: other schools do because of our commitment to the high
- 3:36Speaker 4: school recruiting. But again, again, I'd much rather have this
- 3:41Speaker 4: problem right now than than the ladder.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:43Speaker 4: So we'll take the situation that we're in. You know,
- 3:46Speaker 4: Kelvin really is in a situation that I guess kind
- 3:49Speaker 4: of similar to Quinn.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's gonna it's gonna kind.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Of be a process throughout the week to see what
- 3:54Speaker 4: he can look like as we get closer to game day.
- 3:56Speaker 1: But it was a good start to the week for him,
- 3:58Speaker 1: all right.
- 3:58Speaker 3: So I didn't asked about might they continue to open
- 4:05Speaker 3: up the playbook even more? Have they opened it completely up?
- 4:09Speaker 3: And does that include more perhaps of seeing a little
- 4:11Speaker 3: more of arge banding.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We might. I don't know.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I don't I I would say no, we haven't fully
- 4:21Speaker 4: opened our playbook because you know, as a staff, we
- 4:24Speaker 4: sit around and we think about our roster, and we
- 4:27Speaker 4: think about our team, and we think about what we're
- 4:29Speaker 4: good at, and we think about where we can improve,
- 4:32Speaker 4: and we're going to run stuff Saturday that we haven't
- 4:35Speaker 4: ran all year because of who we are as a
- 4:38Speaker 4: team now and finding new ways to try to move
- 4:41Speaker 4: the football and create issues for our opponents.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And so you know, there's always things that we're going
- 4:47Speaker 1: to do that are new.
- 4:49Speaker 4: And I think that that the beauty of these guys
- 4:51Speaker 4: offensively is that they really accept that stuff and like, Okay,
- 4:54Speaker 4: here's why we're doing it, So let's make sure we
- 4:56Speaker 4: get this this aspect right.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And so.
- 5:00Speaker 4: I don't know, you know, I mean, we did wildcat
- 5:02Speaker 4: there for about three years, and that was a big
- 5:04Speaker 4: part of what we did with Roshan, and that we
- 5:06Speaker 4: threw arch in here on a couple opportunities here in
- 5:09Speaker 4: the high red to get into some quarterback run stuff
- 5:12Speaker 4: and we've gotten into twenty one personnel and utilize blue
- 5:15Speaker 4: and Tray together, and so we're constantly trying to evolve
- 5:18Speaker 4: that stuff. We did some tackle over things in this
- 5:20Speaker 4: game that we hadn't shown much of throughout the year.
- 5:23Speaker 4: So you're always trying to find little tweaks and things
- 5:26Speaker 4: to find some advantages along the way. So I'm sure
- 5:29Speaker 4: there'll be a few new wrinkles this Saturday as well.
- 5:31Speaker 3: All right, And then he was asked about the Long
- 5:35Speaker 3: Runs playing well in hostile environments in all. In all,
- 5:39Speaker 3: the Long Runs now have one eleven consecutive road games,
- 5:43Speaker 3: eleven straight road games.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So how has that men?
- 5:49Speaker 3: How have they been so good on the road, and
- 5:50Speaker 3: how have they been so good in hostile environments?
- 5:53Speaker 1: I really think so.
- 5:54Speaker 4: You know, our guys love I think they kind of
- 5:58Speaker 4: embrace it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You know, they embrace being together.
- 6:01Speaker 4: They embrace knowing, hey, they're not running out of DKR
- 6:04Speaker 4: and there's one hundred and five thousand burn Orange fans
- 6:06Speaker 4: screaming and yelling for them.
- 6:08Speaker 1: They kind of embrace and get fueled by the booze
- 6:12Speaker 1: and and the crowd noise. On the road.
- 6:14Speaker 4: When you're on offense, you have to really focus, and
- 6:17Speaker 4: sometimes that helps us focus even better. You know, I've
- 6:20Speaker 4: looked at all of our numbers. I feel like we
- 6:21Speaker 4: have more false starts at home than we do them
- 6:24Speaker 4: we're actually on the road, because it forces our focus,
- 6:26Speaker 4: it forces the communication. But I do think our guys
- 6:30Speaker 4: embrace it and enjoy it. It's been a journey to
- 6:33Speaker 4: get to that point, but we've gone into some tough
- 6:35Speaker 4: environments and played pretty good football. I would argue some
- 6:38Speaker 4: of our best football over the last two years has
- 6:40Speaker 4: been played on the road, and so it does give
- 6:43Speaker 4: me a lot of confidence knowing, hey, you know, essentially
- 6:47Speaker 4: going on the road, what it's going to take to
- 6:48Speaker 4: try to come out on top.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Okay, well we'll hear a little more from Start coming
- 6:54Speaker 3: up next hour as well the Tech since men's and
- 7:01Speaker 3: women's basketball teams go back on the road this week
- 7:04Speaker 3: and both with challenges. The Long Worn men went on
- 7:07Speaker 3: Friday night against Delaware State and now have won six
- 7:13Speaker 3: in a row after dropping their season opener. So they're
- 7:16Speaker 3: six and one heading into the SEC. Well, I guess
- 7:20Speaker 3: they should say the ACC SEC challenges. ACC is at home.
- 7:24Speaker 3: They're going to play a North Carolina State team that
- 7:26Speaker 3: is five and two. Remember NC State reached the Final
- 7:30Speaker 3: four a year ago. Now they graduated some players off
- 7:32Speaker 3: of that, but they still have some good players like
- 7:35Speaker 3: Ben Middlebrooks, Marcus Hill, Jayden Taylor's their leading scorer, a
- 7:40Speaker 3: guy who transferred in from Butler, Dontrest Styles transferred in
- 7:45Speaker 3: from Georgetown, Brandon Huntley Hatfield transferred in from Louisville. Middlebrooks
- 7:49Speaker 3: transferred income from Clemson. So they've got some transfers they've
- 7:53Speaker 3: really helped to Michael O'Connell, the grad student guard started
- 7:58Speaker 3: off at Stanford. So there's those guys. They average seventy
- 8:01Speaker 3: six points a game and they give up sixty five
- 8:03Speaker 3: a game the Long Wars. Right now, we're averaging eighty
- 8:05Speaker 3: three and allowing sixty two. This will be the first
- 8:07Speaker 3: time Texas has played North Carolina State. Here's that number
- 8:12Speaker 3: again in thirteen years. In fact, the last time that
- 8:17Speaker 3: Texas played nca State was three days before Texas played
- 8:22Speaker 3: Texas A and M in that climactic football game where
- 8:26Speaker 3: they won on the Justin.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Tucker Field goal.
- 8:28Speaker 3: They played in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the Ticket
- 8:31Speaker 3: City Legends Classic and lost the NC State that night,
- 8:34Speaker 3: seventy seven to seventy fourth. Series overalls tied to two
- 8:37Speaker 3: between Texas and NCAA State. And then the Texas women
- 8:40Speaker 3: will play at Notre Dame. That is also sec ACC
- 8:45Speaker 3: SEC Challenge since Notre Dame it plays basketball in the ACC.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Notre Dane was unbeaten and then stumbled after knocking off
- 8:59Speaker 3: South Carolin lost a couple of games in the Islands.
- 9:03Speaker 2: They have not played Notre Dame since the last year.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Before I started doing the play by play, it was
- 9:10Speaker 3: to ninety six ninety seven season. March seventeen, nineteen ninety seven.
- 9:16Speaker 3: It was in a second round in see A tournament
- 9:18Speaker 3: game at the Irwin Center, Notre Dame in Texas. You
- 9:21Speaker 3: know what the wrinkle on that was Cam. The play
- 9:23Speaker 3: by play voice for Texas women's basketball that year was
- 9:25Speaker 3: none other than our good friend, the late immortal Bill Little,
- 9:29Speaker 3: And the color analyst for that game was John mckovic.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Texas was was coming off.
- 9:37Speaker 3: The high of winning the Big twelfth title over Nebraska,
- 9:40Speaker 3: and so Macovick had nothing going on, and Bill and
- 9:43Speaker 3: vided to be on, and he was on.
- 9:44Speaker 2: He did color for the game.
- 9:45Speaker 3: That's the last time Texas played Notre Dame in women's basketball.
- 9:48Speaker 3: We'll be back to wrap a bower Number two on
- 9:50Speaker 3: Sports Radio AAM thirteen under the Zone
