- 0:00Khalil Green. How about, I mean, the most
- 0:02obvious one ever is David Freeze David.
- 0:04Freeze and Jim. Jimmy Ball Game.
- 0:06Khalil Green was acquired from the Padre.
- 0:08That was a trade. Yes, it was for Luke.
- 0:10Gregerson lives back in 08, so I guess Gregerson must have made
- 0:14his way back. He did.
- 0:15And Mark Worrell. Mark Worrell, whether or not he
- 0:19had any cachet at the time. There's the guy right there.
- 0:21I've said it for years. Khalil Green is the white whale
- 0:25because of how everything ended. What's he doing?
- 0:30Is he cool? Is he all right?
- 0:31I mean, the way his career ended with the anxiety and all of
- 0:35that, and I've never heard from, I've never seen him on any
- 0:38interview. You're right.
- 0:40So do you know who you know? Khalil Green's story.
- 0:43He was widely considered one of the best shortstop in baseball.
- 0:46Like defensively he was a a freak and had had offensive
- 0:52potential. Didn't he hit 30 bombs one year,
- 0:54Think he did 34 made? It up, I didn't feel.
- 0:56Like one year you hit about 30 of your own.
- 0:58And he's a little emo looking guy, like a little skateboarder
- 1:01looking guy who was just crazy athletic and the Cardinals get
- 1:05him and he had anxiety issues and he had, he was a cutter,
- 1:09what they call a cutter, meaning he would inflict damage upon
- 1:12himself and then he went to get help and just went away and was
- 1:16no longer a baseball player. Oh.
- 1:18Only one year with the Cardinals.
- 1:19I didn't realize that. Yeah, What do you have, 27
- 1:21homers one year? Yeah, and 07:00.
- 1:23Was that the most? With the Padres, yeah.
- 1:25That's a lot though. For short stuff, for sure.
- 1:28And he was only five 11210. If that.
- 1:33Oh really? I don't even remember him
- 1:35sometimes. The heights that they put on the
- 1:37roster aren't exact. I think of him as like a 59 kind
- 1:41of guy, probably. Maybe right around 200, I don't
- 1:45know. I remember.
- 1:47I can't remember who told me this, but you you mentioned
- 1:50being a cutter, and I don't know exactly how he did it each time,
- 1:53but I heard sometimes he'd be so mad that he would dig his fist
- 1:58into the dirt and twist it to a point where he would harm
- 2:02himself. And his teammates saw some of
- 2:05this in the clubhouse, so it's really a sad.
- 2:09Story He wear sleeves? Yes.
- 2:11To hide it, yeah. Yeah, and and Charlie's right.
- 2:16Like, I haven't read anything about how he's doing, what he's
- 2:19doing. Hopefully he's OK.
- 2:20Seemed like a nice guy, just different, you know, a different
- 2:24sort. You know, when even when you
- 2:25just talk to him, kind of soft spoken.
- 2:29I could be wrong about this. I thought that he just did an
- 2:32interview somewhere, maybe with Frank or something within like
- 2:35the past year. I could.
- 2:36I could be. Mitchell Green.
- 2:38I think I could be mixing him up with somebody else because yeah,
- 2:42I know that he's interviewed. I think it was Spezio at some
- 2:45point, reason I might be mixing him up with another old
- 2:47Cardinals infielder. But I had thought that Brett
- 2:49Tomko also came from the Padres in O2 and Woody Williams for Ray
- 2:55Langford, a couple names that we hear every now and again.
- 2:58So let me tell you my Brett Tomko story.
- 3:01Tell me if this is weird. It was He was a Cardinal and he
- 3:05wasn't. He's done playing and he was a
- 3:07pretty good pitcher and I'm walking around the clubhouse.
- 3:13I think I had to go to the San Diego side to get sound.
- 3:16Anyway, there's a guy wearing a Brett Tomco jersey.
- 3:21It was Brett Tomco. Have you ever heard of a player?
- 3:25And it wasn't for an on the field thing.
- 3:28This wasn't like, yeah, they're honoring former Padres from this
- 3:32year or whatever. He was just there to say hi and
- 3:35and he was wearing a Brett Tomco jersey.
- 3:38To the game. Yes, wow, really As a fan.
- 3:42Just I guess, trying to blend in.
- 3:44Have you ever? I don't know.
- 3:45Weird. That's very weird, but I like
- 3:47it. I do kind of like that one more,
- 3:50by the way. There's laundry.
- 3:51Day with the PA? Yeah, exactly.
- 3:53One more with the Padres. The only three team deal the
- 3:56Cardinals have ever executed in the 21st century was with both
- 4:00the Indians and the Padres, the two teams they traded with the
- 4:02most. Any idea who may have been
- 4:04involved in that? Can you give us a year?
- 4:062010 trade deadline. OK, so hold on. 2010 Indians and
- 4:11Padres. So that was the year they didn't
- 4:15make the playoffs, even though Carpenter and Wayno both went
- 4:17off that year, right? OK, I can't remember years.
- 4:21Didn't they? Wasn't Wayno supposed to win the
- 4:23Cy Young that year? But they kind of split the vote
- 4:26and they both finished second, third.
- 4:28I feel like that sounds. About right.
- 4:29That sounds right, so. 2010 I'm going to guess that was Chris
- 4:34Perez. No.
- 4:36It wasn't. That was hold.
- 4:38On Can we keep guessing? Yeah, go ahead.
- 4:40So the Cardinals you got two pitchers.
- 4:41Are they adding from each team? Are.
- 4:43They adding a big. League player was 1 Westbrook.
- 4:45Correct. OK.
- 4:46So Westbrook. And then you shipped out an
- 4:48outfielder who I liked and ended up playing for the Pirates
- 4:51eventually. You shipped out an outfielder
- 4:54to. San Diego, San Diego All Star
- 4:58here. In 2010.
- 5:01Not necessarily. That year he was an All Star in
- 5:03Saint Louis, I believe. Dang.
- 5:06I he was an All Star for one season.
- 5:08I think it was with the Cardinals.
- 5:10He may not have been an All Star with the Cardinals, but a one
- 5:12time outfield All Star. Was he older?
- 5:16I guess a little bit, yeah. So wait, they also got a big
- 5:18league pitcher from the Padres? Yeah, Nick Greenwood.
- 5:23OK. So not as good as Jake
- 5:24Westbrook, I don't believe. Jake Westbrook was pretty solid.
- 5:27Yeah, it was Ryan Ludwick. Oh yeah.
- 5:31Oh, he was great in 2008. Yeah, for sure.
- 5:33What do you have 30? 8 homers, I think he had 37
- 5:35bombs, maybe like 114 RBI. That's really good.
- 5:40Wow. Yeah, he's he was a monster.
- 5:42And then can't. Think he's still with him?
- 5:44Yeah, I know. He was like a roving coach.
- 5:46I don't know where he is now. Great guy.
- 5:49Like one of the all time great guys.
- 5:51Wasn't he with the Cardinals for a while in the minor leagues?
- 5:53Yes. And then he came up and he just
- 5:56crushed. Then he didn't.
- 5:59I think the next year even he had about, didn't he have about
- 6:0125 bombs the next year, in 2000? 90 I got to pull all this up now
- 6:06but. But the first year, that was my
- 6:08first year here because so that was 2008 and that was when Aunt
- 6:11Keel also I believe had 25 homers.
- 6:15That wasn't to me. The Aunt Keel story was amazing.
- 6:20Like he he lost it as a pitcher and they gave him shot after
- 6:25shot. I remember one time everyone's
- 6:28at spring training he was going to throw after going through it
- 6:32and Walt Walt jockey did an interview and he goes, oh, I
- 6:36guess all you all you guys are putting cameras on Rick you know
- 6:40you ever think about maybe you guys make it worse for him or
- 6:45something. I was like, are you saying that
- 6:48the cameras or Anyway, so he. So he calls off the jam.
- 6:54He gets back to his condo, whatever his agent calls and an
- 6:59ankle. He talked about this in his
- 7:00book. He's a book.
- 7:01It's really good book. But I asked him about something.
- 7:05He gets back to his condo, it's over.
- 7:08I mean he went through a lot of strain and stress.
- 7:10You know, had a rough upbringing and he felt, he said he for the
- 7:13first time he felt like the weight had been lifted off his
- 7:17shoulders and then his phone rings his agent.
- 7:19He thought his agent is going to be like, how how you doing?
- 7:22OK you ready to play baseball? He's like, what?
- 7:25Yeah, you're going to be a position player and I
- 7:27understand, and Keel as a young player, could hit, could play
- 7:31outfield. I mean, the arm, obviously
- 7:34everyone knows about his throwing arm and literally like
- 7:37right after he walked away from it, his agent said, OK, you're
- 7:40going to be a position player. What his agent had cut a deal
- 7:44with Jockey, who really liked and Keel and saw that this guy
- 7:47had tools aside from pitching, had already said if he walks
- 7:50away, can he come back? And he came back as a position
- 7:53player and everyone was like, what are they doing?
- 7:56Legacy bobblehead. There was a There was a cold
- 8:00back there saying this never works.
- 8:02A younger version of myself was saying he wasn't practicing his
- 8:06hitting. You're just going to put him in
- 8:07the lineup as a hitter. What are you talking about?
- 8:08What are you doing, chief Chokers?
- 8:10Exactly. And everyone said no one gave
- 8:13him a shot, that he'd be able to do it, and he did.
- 8:15And he had a Major League career after that.
- 8:18Another team that actually Cam's contribution yesterday in this
- 8:23segment of beat the board, he said.
- 8:25The Athletics and we, we struggled a little bit to come
- 8:29up with some there. Let me see who they had.
- 8:32OK, hold on real quick. Yeah, this surprised me.
- 8:35So now you'll kind of know where I'm going, how much money you
- 8:37think Ryan Ludwick made in the big leagues.
- 8:41I'm going to say he lasted 8 million.
- 8:44Oh, I'm going to say more than that.
- 8:45He lasted A decently long time. I'm going to say 38 million. 34.
- 8:50I thought he was before the bag. Remember at the end though with
- 8:53with the Reds, he had a good year.
- 8:55And look in 20/12/26 bombs, 80 RBI had 154 career homers.
- 9:01That's pretty good 12 years in the bigs.
- 9:04That is good. Tommy Pham has made like 30.
- 9:08I would have thought Tommy Pham, because more money is paid out
- 9:11nowadays than it was back then. So Ludwig made more than Tommy
- 9:15Pham. Tommy's been around 10.
- 9:18So ace how many total trades? Five, a lot of them
- 9:24insignificant, but there was one.
- 9:26I mentioned Mark Mulder yesterday and I mentioned Matt
- 9:28Holiday. There was one that I was missing
- 9:30and it was a a guy who I. You mentioned Moss too, right?
- 9:34He came from the Indians. Biscotti.
- 9:36That's right, it was. Biscotti.
- 9:38Biscotti was the one that I missed.
- 9:40Who did? The Cardinals get for biscotti.
- 9:42Yairo Munoz. Oh, he was pretty decent.
- 9:45Max Schrock. OK, but Munoz was pretty good
- 9:48for a year and 1/2 he was OK before he.
- 9:50Didn't he just leave spring training?
- 9:51Yeah, he just left spring training.
- 9:54He did. He just disappeared.
- 9:56He was. Like I'll see you.
- 9:57Guys later and they were like, where is he?
- 9:58I don't. Know I just don't feel like
- 9:59playing. Biscotti's mom was dealing with
- 10:02health issues and part of this move was to let him play in a
- 10:07place where he could be close to her.
- 10:09So the return wasn't that, but it was Gyro Munoz.
- 10:14And Piscotti was part of the this is kind of a theme with the
- 10:17outfield figuring out the outfield.
- 10:19So this is going back, what, 10 years?
- 10:22And it was all about the outfield of the future was
- 10:24supposed to be Richik Piscotti and then, of course, Oscar
- 10:28Tavares. Right.
- 10:31Blue Jays, you had some trade, you traded away, alled Miss Diaz
- 10:34because you had Paul De Young coming up.
- 10:36I guess because Diaz was an All Star.
- 10:39He was a good player and then he was quickly escorted out.
- 10:43So he was the All Star of the one year where nobody was great.
- 10:48But he was good. I mean, he was good defensively,
- 10:50always pretty solid offensively, and he's been around for a long
- 10:54time. He's a good player.
- 10:56And with Gretchik, you know Gretchik never evolved into the
- 11:00280 40 Homer guy that May, but he's always around 25 Homer.
- 11:05He's always 24250 with some other good numbers spring
- 11:09sprinkled in and gives you a pretty good defense.
- 11:12And so the thing that I need explained is, because I've heard
- 11:16this a lot, that the whole passing of Oscar Taveras kind of
- 11:19put the Cardinals in a bind because they didn't know how to
- 11:21respond to it. But within like two years after
- 11:24that, they gutted their entire outfield.
- 11:27They had Fan, Pascotti and Gretchik and they were all gone.
- 11:30And so you had options, seemingly.
- 11:32I'm now doing revisionist history here, and I also wasn't
- 11:36here following the story very closely.
- 11:38But the the narrative that I'm hearing and I've heard ever
- 11:42since I got here is that the Tavares passing really wrecked
- 11:44the outfield. But then you traded all of them
- 11:47after that? He was the See.
- 11:50He was more of a prospect than he was the prospect, right?
- 11:53He was the guy. Wasn't he number one in
- 11:55baseball? Yes, at one point.
- 11:57So all of a sudden he's off the board.
- 11:59They had to go get a free agent and that, and I mean all the
- 12:03things that happened, like the outfield, never kind of gelled
- 12:09the way they had hoped. I don't think Gretchen became
- 12:12what they had envisioned. Pascotti was hurt a lot.
- 12:16Which one of those two got knocked unconscious in
- 12:18Pittsburgh? Biscotti gotcha.
- 12:20Biscotti that was he was a guy you.
- 12:22Got scary. I flew out for that FOX 2 we're
- 12:25watching. The game member was right before
- 12:27they clinched. So I think they clinched the
- 12:29next day or maybe two days later.
- 12:31But we're watching the game and I get a call.
- 12:33Hey, we need to go to Pittsburgh because Steven Biscotti might
- 12:36have died or something. He didn't, of course.
- 12:39He did. He That wasn't the part where he
- 12:41got hit at the plate. He got hit up with a throw.
- 12:44He got hit with another. Like, didn't he get hit three
- 12:46times? Yes, in one at bat.
- 12:48And then so Tavares, it would be like Tavares was Jordan Walker.
- 12:53Think about that. I mean that's how that's how big
- 12:55of a prospect Tavares was. I think he was the best
- 12:58prospect, right. He was offensively.
- 13:01For a while there the Cardinals had you had Alex Reyes as the
- 13:05number one prospect in baseball, I believe by by 1 publication at
- 13:09some point Oscar Tavares was. And then, correct me if I'm
- 13:11wrong, after he passed, didn't they immediately trade for Jason
- 13:14Hayward that? That was the guy they brought
- 13:17in. Right.
- 13:17So you trade Shelby Miller, who at the time was freaking
- 13:21awesome. And then even that next year, I
- 13:22believe Shelby Miller because I was at that All Star game.
- 13:25I think that's when he was an All Star with a terrible win
- 13:28loss record. So Shelby Miller at the time was
- 13:31Shelby Miller was like. He couldn't win.
- 13:33He was like 16 losses. But he had like.
- 13:36He was like 6 and 17 but like a 3.22.
- 13:40I believe he was an All Star that year and.
- 13:42He's had injuries along the way, but he was back with the Dodgers
- 13:45last year. Pretty good, actually.
- 13:48I give that guy credit, too. It's not easy, I think, when
- 13:51you're injured all the time and you've never lived up to your
- 13:54potential. Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins
- 13:58are who you sent. To Tyrell, Jenkins was supposed
- 14:01to be the shiznit. And he was not the shiznit.
- 14:05OK, wasn't he the dude who was supposed to go to Baylor as a
- 14:07quarterback after RG3? Am I wrong on that?
- 14:10Really. I didn't know there was a guy
- 14:12who was supposed. To do that, I thought Tyler.
- 14:14I thought Tyrell Jenkins was a two way football guy who chose
- 14:17baseball. My memory's not the best.
- 14:19Sounds about right. He's from Henderson, TX, so
- 14:22we're on the let's. Look that up, by the way.
- 14:23Yep, you're January 2010. He committed to play both
- 14:26college baseball and college football at Baylor.
- 14:27Shelby Miller, 6 and 17, led the league in losses, 33 starts,
- 14:323.02 ERA. He was an All Star.
- 14:34I don't know why I was actually thinking about this the other
- 14:37day. It's really random but Shelby
- 14:39Miller was in the news when he signed his his deal and again
- 14:43I'm very happy for him and I just remember, do you remember?
- 14:47So I think he was O nine. Was he an O nine draft.
- 14:51So first round pick, high school kid from Texas.
- 14:55I believe that was the same year that Jacob Turner, the kid from
- 14:58here Westminster, was also a super stud.
- 15:02The year before you had two stud.
- 15:04You had Jake Odarizzi from high school in Illinois over the
- 15:07River Highland and Tim. Tim Melville was a bigger
- 15:12prospect than all of them and he got to the bigs little bit with
- 15:15the Reds and all that. But I was laughing because so
- 15:18this is early Twitter Shelby Miller signs for probably what
- 15:22I'm guessing 11.5. Whatever it was.
- 15:25I remember him tweeting, he goes, Obama's killing me with
- 15:29these taxes and and look, he's a high school kid, 18 years old at
- 15:34the time and he was making like 1.5 signing bonus, whatever his
- 15:38bonus, it was a million or more. And I just remember seeing that
- 15:41tweet and everybody on Twitter's like, oh, millions.
- 15:43Not enough. For you, boy, you know.
- 15:45I just remember how funny that was when he tweeted that.
- 15:47He was. He's a funny guy.
- 15:49Shelby, who's cool, best friends with with Joe Kelly, and those
- 15:54two together don't seem like a match either.
- 15:56But they were. They were best.
- 15:58Friends and then also I'd like to know the answer to this
- 16:01wasn't. And again, this is kind of going
- 16:03back to time. I have a terrible memory.
- 16:04Wasn't 13 the year when they get to the World Series that Shelby
- 16:08never pitched and we didn't know why.
- 16:11Then he warmed up in the last game of the World Series.
- 16:14Am I wrong about that? Sounds right.
- 16:17I honestly, the years blend together.
- 16:19But you had the weird years where you know Waka leads you to
- 16:22the freaking World Series in 13, and then he doesn't pitch at all
- 16:26in the playoffs. And then he was a little banged
- 16:27up until Travis Ishikawa. I'm pretty sure Shelby Miller
- 16:30was the one that didn't pitch at all in the postseason.
- 16:34Let let me find this 'cause I'm, I'm kind of Shelby, remembering
- 16:37Shelby. Had a lot of injuries along the
- 16:39way too. 2013 At the deadline, the Cardinals sold Mark
- 16:44Zepchinsky for a player that didn't even play.
- 16:47Why would they have done that? OK, so they sold Zepchinsky in
- 16:51what year? 13 The year that they went to
- 16:54the World Series. To who?
- 16:56Was that the Blue Jays? The Indians for Juan Herrera?
- 16:58Some shortstop That you know what they've heard of?
- 17:01So. They got, they got stopped being
- 17:02good for a while. Yeah, And I can tell you this, I
- 17:05I I don't like to tell these little stories, but I'm gonna.
- 17:08We're eleven years removed. Yeah, that's why I figure it's.
- 17:11Yeah, he's not listening. I asked Larussa about
- 17:13Zepchinsky. There was a stretch where he
- 17:15wasn't being used and he said he doesn't want to go in.
- 17:19He's what he he's scared to go in.
- 17:21Like Zepchinsky was a nice guy who was really effective.
- 17:25They called him Scrabble because of his name and the way it's
- 17:27spelled. And.
- 17:29And then he wasn't. And Larussa told me that's kind
- 17:34of intimated that he got the yips, like all of a sudden he
- 17:37didn't want to go in like he didn't.
- 17:39He was like, he's like scared to go in.
- 17:42OK, well, it's one thing now, the yips, and it's one thing
- 17:44that'd be like scared to go in, so I'd.
- 17:47Maybe the but I'm saying I guess the yips about even they got it.
- 17:51I don't know what happened. And at the later deadline that
- 17:54you, you got John Axford, who I'm a fan of.
- 17:57Was he handlebar mustache? Oh yeah, that was after he was
- 18:01really good, and at that point he was struggling a bit.
- 18:04He was when we got him, he was fun.
- 18:06He was a batting practice pitcher, very nice guy, did his
- 18:10movie picks and all that, but didn't have a lot left in the
- 18:13tank. Who and who was the big dude
- 18:15that we got? Oh, Broxton.
- 18:17Broxton. Yeah, from Milwaukee as well.
- 18:20And I can't remember who it was. And we got him and Broxton was
- 18:24dominant for a while. Dominant and fun to watch
- 18:27because he scared batters. And then I asked someone,
- 18:31whoever, we got him from Milwaukee, and they're like, oh,
- 18:34good luck with that. Didn't he date Alyssa Milano
- 18:37randomly? I thought there was a.
- 18:39Time Brad Penny. Did that was oh OK.
- 18:41Well, they look the same. Are we sure that also OK?
- 18:46I know Alyssa Milano dated a lot of baseball players back.
- 18:48I know, I know. She dated Brad Penny and the
- 18:50cards got Brad Penny and then he got, like, hurt immediately.
- 18:53You're right. I'm sorry, Brad.
- 18:55Penny, you're right. But.
- 18:56Right. Wasn't Brad Penny the guy who
- 18:57came with a resume? And yes, and then he got hurt
- 19:00right away. Wasn't he really good with the
- 19:02Marlins? Sounds right.
- 19:06Dodgers who you're thinking? Of Brad Penny.
- 19:09Yeah, but started with the Marlins.
- 19:10He. Started the No.
- 19:12He ended with the Marlins? No.
- 19:14I'm looking at right here his first 4 1/2 years with Florida.
- 19:18Oh. Florida.
- 19:19Oh, he went back to Miami after they after they changed their
- 19:22name and all that. What was he?
- 19:23What? Cardinals Cardinals 2010 He was
- 19:27three and four. Brad Penny was a cardinal.
- 19:30Yeah, we just told you that. Oh, I'm.
- 19:32I'm looking up Alyssa Milano's dating history.
- 19:34Who's Who's she got? I don't see any baseball
- 19:37players. No, she dated Brad.
- 19:38Oh yeah, it was a thing. He had a 3.23 ERA and nine
- 19:42starts. And got hurt.
- 19:44Yeah, he was a good pitcher. And one other team that we
- 19:47talked about that's. Why?
- 19:49That's why the Cardinals are in the situation they're in right
- 19:53now. Because of Brad Penny.
- 19:55There you go. The bad situation or the good?
- 19:59The Mariners were another. Depends how you look at it.
- 20:01The Mariners were another team that they've traded with a lot
- 20:03and. Always for a random reliever
- 20:05like a 40 man type, I feel like it was always kind of like a
- 20:09Rule 5 type situation. Who's the guy that that rode the
- 20:13Memphis train that one year like 87 times?
- 20:17From Florida? This was about five years ago.
- 20:20I don't know I got the name right.
- 20:21Here to me it's. Seth Elledge.
- 20:24No, there's a Mariners guy who is Latino.
- 20:28Remember, there was one year that they just optioned him 1000
- 20:31times. I can't think of a bunch of.
- 20:34Somebody in the text line will let us know.
- 20:36But a a handful of the trades that we couldn't think of.
- 20:40So, Mariners? What's that about, Michael
- 20:41Claydo? You got 'cause you got him for
- 20:43Brendan Ryan? Michael.
- 20:44Claydo threw about 100 but couldn't control it.
- 20:47It's a different guy. Oh, Sam Freeman?
- 20:51No Sam Tui Villala. That's what you sent to Seattle
- 20:56for Seth Ellis did. They get him back from Seattle.
- 20:58Did he start with Seattle? I don't know.
- 21:00I feel like there was one year that Sam Tui Villala went up and
- 21:03down every week. Yeah, you're right.
- 21:05And he, he threw 100. Yeah, back then, you like a guy
- 21:09who threw 100. You're like, that guy throws 100
- 21:11now. They all do.
- 21:12And I think TUI Villala, see how much money he made because he
- 21:16was in Seattle and he was hurt, always hurt.
- 21:18And my kid told me that he's like a big video game streamer
- 21:22now. Career Career ERA 3.33.
- 21:26He was legit. That's pretty good.
- 21:29What do you make in his career? Let's see here.
- 21:32I'm going to guess. I'm going to guess five.
- 21:34No, I'm going to guess 10. I'm going to say 10.
- 21:38Wait a second. Of course, Tyler O'Neill from
- 21:41Marco Gonzalez. I see 2 1/2.
- 21:43He didn't really hit free agency.
- 21:46And then dishing Mike Leake, getting rid of that contract,
- 21:50got rid of him, you got traded away Sam Gaviglio, Was that a
- 21:55name that anybody has heard of before?
- 21:57Actually, yes, because fantasy wait, the Cardinals traded him.
- 22:00Traded him away. OK, there was a couple years in
- 22:03fantasy where he would give you a couple starts.
- 22:05I feel like it was. Didn't he have a good couple
- 22:07years with Seattle as a starter as, like the?
- 22:10Possibly. Sam Gaviglio.
- 22:12I didn't remember. Did you ever?
- 22:13Were you around when Leake was here?
- 22:15Yes. Nice guy.
- 22:17Oh yeah. Different though.
- 22:20You ever asked him about the incident that he had?
- 22:22I feel like when he first signed or yeah, when he signed that
- 22:27Commission did the interview where he addressed it.
- 22:30And I remember thinking, and this is again, my memories kind
- 22:33of shot. But I remember the story being
- 22:37better than what I thought in terms of and we can look this
- 22:41up. I think what happened was he got
- 22:44a bunch of shirts or whatever for Christmas and instead of
- 22:47going through the process of going through the line, he
- 22:50didn't want to wait. And I think he dropped the
- 22:52shirts on a table and just took other ones.
- 22:55Yes. So I think the story was not as
- 22:57bad as a dude who's just straight up shoplifting, if if
- 23:00I'm not mistaken. No, that was his version.
- 23:02Which to me, if you can show that usually you don't get
- 23:07charged like. So was he charged?
- 23:10I think he was, I don't know, whatever happened with the
- 23:12charges, but it wasn't. It was like big baseball news
- 23:17that this happened. But yeah, his version was, yeah,
- 23:20I went to return the shirt and it was like a line.
- 23:23So I just put that back and took the right shirt and then all of
- 23:26a sudden I got popped. How about this?
- 23:28We got two texters right now. One of them is Flipper Beam.
- 23:31One of them I'm trying to get a nickname for so I can give him
- 23:33credit. They say Brad Penny hit a Grand
- 23:35Slam and then didn't return to the game.
- 23:38Oh, I remember that He hit a granny.
- 23:41And got hurt doing it. Was that what it was?
- 23:44Who is it against? I.
- 23:45Don't remember? That I'm going to have to look
- 23:46this up. I do remember that.
- 23:49I want to say it feels like it might have been the Dodgers.
- 23:52Brad, Penny. The Cardinals had a lot of
- 23:54random dudes kind of at the end of their careers.
- 23:59Brad Penny. No, he was not.
- 24:01At the end he was a good. Pitcher, but but that was the
- 24:04last year. He was good, I believe.
- 24:06Yeah 'cause he got hurt. That's what I'm saying.
- 24:08May 22nd, 2010. Oh, why don't the cards bring
- 24:13Brad Penny back to the rotation? The Angels, as if we get the
- 24:16Grand Slam off of. Hit a Grand Slam.
- 24:18Yeah, in Bush Stadium. Didn't Did Carp hit a Grand Slam
- 24:24versus the Reds? Chris Carpenter?
- 24:27I think so. I feel like I remember that as
- 24:29well. Reds, by the way, is the only
- 24:31team the Cardinals have not traded with since.
- 24:34The. Really.
- 24:35Yeah. Only team.
- 24:36Not, not even 1 trade. Not even one.
- 24:39There was mad at each other back in the day.
- 24:41Remember the baseballs? John Smoltz thought the
- 24:44baseballs were bad. And then Carp spoke up for him.
- 24:47And then the other wasn't there. The reliever for the for the
- 24:50Reds that was throwing the baseballs back as well.
- 24:54Yeah, So what they said was that for the the balls.
- 25:00Who? Who was the?
- 25:01The starter? The rock star singer for the.
- 25:03Oh, Bronson Arroyo. When Arroyo started, he didn't
- 25:07want mud on the ball. Yeah, so they didn't mud up the
- 25:10ball the way they're required, and it's up to the home
- 25:13clubhouse to mud up the balls. I don't know if that's changed,
- 25:17but when Arroyo pitched, he wanted it slick so they didn't
- 25:20mud it up, which meant that the opposing pitcher has to do what
- 25:24Bronson wanted. And this infuriated Smoltz, who
- 25:28didn't really want to say it, So Carp Chris Carpenter did for
- 25:31him, as I recall. And then wasn't there another
- 25:34incident around 11 that the same thing happened?
- 25:37Probably. I feel like it was a that was an
- 25:39ongoing, yeah, the Reds and Cards have always battled
- 25:42outside of the the Phillips and Yachty thing.
- 25:45Good old Dusty Dusty V Tony. My favorite was.
- 25:50I guess that was more Cubs. I've told this story before, but
- 25:52it's one of my favorites. So the Cardinals and Reds brawl,
- 25:56everyone wants to talk about the brawl because it was.
- 25:59I mean, they still show the video to this day.
- 26:01It was a legitimate brawl, right?
- 26:04And Tony said we're going to talk about the game.
- 26:07We're not going to talk about that bull crap, OK, So I let
- 26:10other people go. They asked quite maybe I did
- 26:13about the game. And then Tony said, Tony brought
- 26:16up the brawl, you know, and then things got sideways.
- 26:19And I don't think we should have done this or you know, this was
- 26:22out of line by the he brought it up.
- 26:24So I followed up him talking about the brawl because we had
- 26:29transitioned to the game, to the brawl by Tony.
- 26:33So I asked a question and he goes, you disrespecting me, I
- 26:37go, what are you talking about? He said you.
- 26:39I said we're not talking about that bull crap.
- 26:41I said, you just did. So I'm following up you And then
- 26:45he said. I'm thinking of having you
- 26:47thrown out. Of here.
- 26:48Nice. And so I look at Brian Bartow
- 26:50like you're going to throw me out.
- 26:52He's like, I'm not throwing anything.
- 26:53He was going to help you out for sure.
- 26:55You know, the first time, the first time Tony ever got a
- 27:00little bit perturbed with me in my first year where I wasn't
- 27:03even going down there that much because I was more of a
- 27:06producer. But I'd go down there here and
- 27:08there, and it was Edmonds comeback.
- 27:11And so here I am in 2008. First, you're here.
- 27:14But I know obviously about Jim Edmonds.
- 27:16And hey, man, Jim Edmonds is beloved.
- 27:18So yeah, it's a homecoming and all that.
- 27:21And Tony was so freaking pissed and I couldn't believe it.
- 27:24And then pregame, I think I asked him maybe two questions.
- 27:28The second one, he got real short.
- 27:30And then I asked him after the game as well about the ovation,
- 27:33all that. He's a cub.
- 27:34He's a cub. Now I remember that.
- 27:36And I was like, what? And then they didn't like each
- 27:38other. Like they really got mad.
- 27:40And remember, I think Jim Edmonds quote was I lost his
- 27:43number or something like that. I'm going to lose his number.
- 27:45Then they finally reconnected later, but Tony was freaking mad
- 27:49at this legendary guy who helped him win games in World Series.
- 27:53That's how freaking competitive Tony was, though.
- 27:55And then do you remember at the winter warm up, were you there
- 27:58for that where Edmonds was around?
- 27:59And he said, I'm going to come back, I'm going to come play for
- 28:02the Cardinals, yes. And everyone's like Edmonds is
- 28:05coming back to the Cardinals. And I saw Tony, and this was
- 28:09away from people. I go, Tony, I can.
- 28:11I grab some quick sound on what? I just talked to you or
- 28:13whatever. Yeah.
- 28:15Edmond says he's coming back. He said what?
- 28:18He said. He said what?
- 28:20Somebody with a 309 area code says.
- 28:22Remember when the Cardinals signed?
- 28:24Cubs great Matt Clement was so stoked for that signing at the
- 28:27time. That's Peoria.
- 28:29Yeah. Every time I see 309 I I don't
- 28:31answer because it's Bradley University asking for money.
- 28:36The general wombat out of exchange crook with text line.
- 28:39The Cardinals had to panic and trade for Jason Hayward after
- 28:42the Taveras death, and the outfield has been constant
- 28:44disaster since. Hey, Chuck, is the ceiling for
- 28:47this Cardinals season to be decent enough to be in position
- 28:49to add at the deadline? Good Lord, that's pathetic.
- 28:52But we've kind of talked about that a little bit how the
- 28:542021-2022 model of bringing in happened.
- 28:57Lester bringing in Montgomery Contreras.
- 29:01Quintana. Sorry.
- 29:02Do you think that that's kind of the model that you expect for
- 29:05the Cardinals to enter the season with?
- 29:07I don't think it'll be that bad. I don't think they'll need to
- 29:10add 2, for sure. That first year they really had
- 29:12to add 3. Remember, they got Wade LeBlanc
- 29:14to eat a bunch of innings before that, I think.
- 29:17Turned out to be their most. He's pretty good.
- 29:19I think the staff is so old, all due respect, that just
- 29:22somebody's probably going to get hurt.
- 29:24Maybe somebody's not as good. So I think the Cardinals usually
- 29:27most of these teams, if you're in it, you probably do have to
- 29:29add a starter and reliever at the at the deadline.
- 29:32OK. So but the The thing is, is that
- 29:34their model, I don't think they're saying hey, we're going
- 29:38to tread water because if you're planning on treading water, then
- 29:41there's always the chance that you could go under while
- 29:43treading water. You know, like I think they want
- 29:47to be good enough where they can add.
- 29:48But I'm totally with Charlie. I've said a million times, hey,
- 29:52we got five good starters, we've got six.
- 29:54In terms of guys who can jump in, you're going to need 9.
- 29:58How many times? But with guys who weren't old,
- 30:01have we been at spring training, shoulder, elbow.
- 30:06And the season starts and that rotation is already limited
- 30:10based on injury. It always happens, let alone you
- 30:13know when it's when. It's guys 3536 years old.
- 30:17So I agree with you. I think they're, I think they're
- 30:19a starter short. And I want a short Tuna because
- 30:21two weeks ago I was a part of that.
- 30:23I want to make sure Tuna gets his full 30 or more.
- 30:25But to get back real quick to Oscar Tavares.
- 30:29And again, we were here, but if you weren't here, I'm not saying
- 30:32he was going to be pool holes, but he was the next superstar.
- 30:37He's the type of guy that if he hits, he's the guy that you buy
- 30:41out early with a $200 million contract.
- 30:44That's how that's how great of a potential hitter he was.
- 30:47So when you literally lose that person, not just in a tragedy,
- 30:51because we're also talking about from a baseball standpoint, but.
- 30:54But that's the dude who's supposed to be.
- 30:56I mean, even right now, he'd have been probably, what, like
- 30:593031, two probably 10 years in. Do you agree when I say the hype
- 31:04and the expectations for him were much greater than what we
- 31:09see with Walker now? Yes.
- 31:11Right. I mean, it was kind of a a notch
- 31:14above that. As good as most people think
- 31:16Walker will be, it was like a not like they thought.
- 31:19This is a guy who's going to come in and hit 30 homers right
- 31:22away. And the first, I don't know if
- 31:24it was the first game or his first Homer in the rain.
- 31:26Remember that? I came down for that and he was
- 31:29my brainy He's the Rainmaker. He was my he was my post game
- 31:33interview. Didn't speak the language that
- 31:35well, but battle through it. I got a picture of me and him.
- 31:38It's kind of sad. Yeah, all right.
- 31:39I don't want a short tuna, so I'm going to be.
- 31:41Quiet. What?
- 31:42One thing, though, The way we're talking about all these old
- 31:45Cardinals, I think Cardinal fans love that.
- 31:48And that's I'm honestly, I'm not chirping you.
- 31:50No, I think. That's something you have to
- 31:51understand. No, I get that.
- 31:53These guys like Brendan Ryan, like your mock, like people love
- 31:56the old guys. And talking about that, like the
- 31:59Brendan Ryan thing, I'm just. I know.
- 32:01No, I get. It I'm just trying.
- 32:03To love sitting around talking about old memories of all
- 32:05players and stuff like that. My the difference?
- 32:07This was hosting A bobblehead night.
- 32:09For some of these guys it would be like, OK, are we overdoing?
- 32:12It's not hosting A bobble. It's a it's a side thing.
- 32:15It's not everyone can try to tell you that.
- 32:18It's a specialty ticket where you get to meet and greet old
- 32:21Cardinals, and fans love it. There's a line for all these
- 32:24guys. Gotcha.
- 32:25Daniel Discalso did it last year lying around the clock for that
- 32:29guy. One last thing was Alan Craig
- 32:32starting to get really bad before they traded him because
- 32:34as soon as they got rid of him, he was horrible for Boston.
- 32:37Yes, they saw. Yes, Alan Craig was scuffling
- 32:40and wasn't the same player. He, I remember him chasing the
- 32:44foul ball. He had the list, Frank.
- 32:46Oh, no deal, Liz. Frank, she's awful.
