Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A. Badi here bringing you another installment
- 0:23Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I feel like this
- 0:27Speaker 1: was a productive week in that I have been doing
- 0:30Speaker 1: a hell of a lot of strategizing when it comes
- 0:33Speaker 1: to the kind of content that I'm bringing you here,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and not just here, to be honest, the kind of
- 0:39Speaker 1: content that I'm bringing to you everywhere in the newsletter,
- 0:43Speaker 1: on social in the community. When it came to book club,
- 0:46Speaker 1: I've just been getting really intentional. I've just been getting
- 0:51Speaker 1: does that make sense about what it is that I'm
- 0:56Speaker 1: putting into the world. And so last week I asked
- 1:00Speaker 1: all of you in the Weekly Hurdle newsletter, if you're
- 1:03Speaker 1: not subscribed, definitely click on over to the show notes
- 1:06Speaker 1: and make sure to do so. I asked you in
- 1:08Speaker 1: there to reply and give me some feedback, and I
- 1:12Speaker 1: was really grateful for all of you who took the
- 1:14Speaker 1: time to do that. The feedback was super helpful and
- 1:18Speaker 1: I learned a few things. The first thing that I
- 1:20Speaker 1: learned is that you want content that is different on
- 1:23Speaker 1: the pod versus in the Weekly Hurdle ten four I
- 1:27Speaker 1: get it. So going forward, I'm going to work on
- 1:30Speaker 1: giving you just that. It also seems as though you
- 1:34Speaker 1: really really really love these highlights of the week, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: in fact, many of you are watching the documentaries, reading
- 1:41Speaker 1: the books, clicking into the articles, and indulging in that content.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So happy to help. What does this mean for five
- 1:48Speaker 1: Minute Friday going forward? I'm going to keep this stories
- 1:51Speaker 1: about what's going on in my life. I don't know
- 1:52Speaker 1: if it ever really gets more comfortable just talking about
- 1:56Speaker 1: my life and my experiences for an entire episode on
- 1:59Speaker 1: the show. But because these little snippets are just that,
- 2:03Speaker 1: they're little snippets, then you know what, We're going to
- 2:06Speaker 1: keep going with it, and I'm going to keep bringing
- 2:08Speaker 1: you some insight into what it is that I'm going
- 2:11Speaker 1: through on the regular. So this week for five Minute Friday,
- 2:15Speaker 1: I want to tell you a story about getting caught
- 2:17Speaker 1: in the rain. I recently started working with a run
- 2:22Speaker 1: coach and so we have remixed the workouts that I
- 2:28Speaker 1: was doing regularly. What that means is I'm running a
- 2:31Speaker 1: little bit less. I have a dedicated day towards strength
- 2:35Speaker 1: training as well as incorporating it one other day a week,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and more cycling, more cross training, because I know that
- 2:41Speaker 1: that is something especially as the weather gets nicer, I'm
- 2:44Speaker 1: going to want to do more often. So on Wednesdays
- 2:49Speaker 1: is my strength training day, and I have been indulging
- 2:53Speaker 1: in a forty five minute peloton full body strength with
- 2:57Speaker 1: my girl, just sims and then I leave the gym
- 3:00Speaker 1: and forty five minutes. I mean, I guess a lot
- 3:02Speaker 1: of my running workouts don't necessarily take more than forty
- 3:05Speaker 1: five minutes, But for some reason, because I don't necessarily
- 3:09Speaker 1: have to shower after, I feel like I can save
- 3:11Speaker 1: strength workout day's hair, so I have I feel like
- 3:16Speaker 1: I have more time, and as a result, I have
- 3:18Speaker 1: been taking Wednesday morning, after I do my strength workout
- 3:22Speaker 1: to walk on over to the park and grab a
- 3:25Speaker 1: coffee and sit for ten to fifteen minutes and just
- 3:28Speaker 1: get really clear on what it is that I want
- 3:31Speaker 1: to do that day where I need to dedicate my efforts,
- 3:34Speaker 1: that sort of thing. I'm sitting on the bench in
- 3:38Speaker 1: Central Park and it was so beautiful just to be
- 3:41Speaker 1: a people watcher and not be and not be moving around.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I'm sitting on a bench in Central Park and witnessing
- 3:48Speaker 1: everything around me, and I think I called my dad
- 3:51Speaker 1: and I'm on the phone with him. I think we're
- 3:53Speaker 1: talking about the newest Apple Podcasts news. It's been quite controversial,
- 3:57Speaker 1: hoping that this podcast comes out without any issues today.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But we're talking about the news, and all of a sudden,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I start to feel rain drops. It is completely sunny,
- 4:10Speaker 1: like bright as all hell. It is gorgeous out. The
- 4:13Speaker 1: flowers are in full bloom. Everyone is out in the park,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and it just starts complete sunshower pouring, And instead of
- 4:23Speaker 1: immediately running for cover, I'm just in full on hysteric laughter,
- 4:29Speaker 1: Like I am laughing, I am wet. It is a thing.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I like, look up at the sky. I'm laughing. My
- 4:36Speaker 1: dad is laughing, and I just like accepted it. And
- 4:44Speaker 1: it was great because eventually, obviously, like I don't sit
- 4:47Speaker 1: there for a long period of time just getting rained on,
- 4:50Speaker 1: but I say goodbye to my dad, I walk to
- 4:53Speaker 1: a covering nearby, and I just think to myself, like
- 4:59Speaker 1: this this is how you've got to be, Like it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: so easy for us to get wrapped up in the uncontrollable.
- 5:08Speaker 1: The rain is the uncontrollable. But in that moment I
- 5:13Speaker 1: found just so much beauty and like the good part
- 5:19Speaker 1: of the chaos, right, instead of freaking out over this thing,
- 5:25Speaker 1: that I could do absolutely nothing about. I just let
- 5:29Speaker 1: it rain over me. And I know it's easier said
- 5:33Speaker 1: than done. If we're going to talk about applying this
- 5:36Speaker 1: to the rest of our lives, applying this to our
- 5:38Speaker 1: work and our relationships and whatnot, and navigating the things
- 5:42Speaker 1: that we can't control, especially when they are things that
- 5:45Speaker 1: are unpreferable undesirable. But here's the deal. You have the
- 5:50Speaker 1: opportunity to control how you react. You are in charge
- 5:56Speaker 1: of that. So maybe the next time you too, get
- 6:01Speaker 1: caught up in something that feels a little bit unexpected,
- 6:04Speaker 1: a little bit jarring, maybe a little less than ideal,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you take a second and step back and think to yourself, well,
- 6:11Speaker 1: what's the worst thing that's gonna happen. I'm gonna get
- 6:14Speaker 1: a little wet because I'll tell you this, I know
- 6:18Speaker 1: you can handle that prompt for you this week, when
- 6:23Speaker 1: was the last time you were pleasantly surprised when you
- 6:27Speaker 1: just went with the flow of things? Again, when was
- 6:30Speaker 1: the last time that you were pleasantly surprised by going
- 6:35Speaker 1: with the flow? I can think of a couple of
- 6:37Speaker 1: nights out where I've just relinquished total control and had
- 6:40Speaker 1: some of the best nights I've ever had in New York.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Highlights of the week for you this week, you know
- 6:47Speaker 1: the drill. Links to all of this are in the
- 6:49Speaker 1: show notes. Watch the Billie Eilish documentary The World's a
- 6:54Speaker 1: Little Blurry. I stumbled upon this on Apple TV. Admittedly
- 6:57Speaker 1: I'm not a huge Billie Eilish fan. I like her stuff,
- 7:01Speaker 1: but just never was like, you know what I'm going
- 7:03Speaker 1: to put on today Billie Eilish's new record. I mean,
- 7:06Speaker 1: she's obscenely talented. I had no idea that she was.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I knew that she was young. I don't think it
- 7:12Speaker 1: registered with me that she was so young when she
- 7:14Speaker 1: found stardom. And the kicker to this is that her
- 7:17Speaker 1: brother is actually her obscenely talented producer. She makes so
- 7:22Speaker 1: much of her music with him. So just to watch
- 7:24Speaker 1: the beautiful relationship she has with her family and her
- 7:27Speaker 1: opening up about where she's at in her life and
- 7:30Speaker 1: what she's been through and the struggles that she goes through,
- 7:32Speaker 1: It's like, you see this chart topping stars, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: just another teenage girl, And I thought that was super interesting.
- 7:42Speaker 1: So definitely check it out. It's over on Apple TV Plus.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And I'm pretty sure if you don't have Apple TV
- 7:47Speaker 1: Plus right now, there's definitely a free trial that you
- 7:50Speaker 1: can get into. Listen Girlfriends and Business. This is a
- 7:54Speaker 1: new podcast from past Hurdle guest to Brittany driscoll. I'll
- 7:58Speaker 1: link to her episode in the show notes as well.
- 8:00Speaker 1: She recently launched this new podcast, Girlfriends in Business, alongside
- 8:05Speaker 1: Laurie Harder and Ali Webb of Drybar Fame It is.
- 8:08Speaker 1: It's right up my alley. I think a lot of
- 8:10Speaker 1: you will like it as well because it's all about
- 8:12Speaker 1: business and career and just how to take your life
- 8:15Speaker 1: to the next level. Watch. I was on Twitter yesterday
- 8:19Speaker 1: and I found this. It's a clip of John Mayer
- 8:22Speaker 1: talking about songwriting, and I actually think that this kind
- 8:25Speaker 1: of resonates with the story that I just tell in
- 8:28Speaker 1: that sometimes you just kind of have to let go
- 8:30Speaker 1: and be about the process, Like you can't go into
- 8:35Speaker 1: absolutely every single thing with a complete plan. And if
- 8:39Speaker 1: you can get to a place where you're fearless, if
- 8:42Speaker 1: you're willing to just let go and try new things
- 8:45Speaker 1: and be willing to mess up, then really really beautiful
- 8:48Speaker 1: things can happen. So definitely check out that little clip
- 8:52Speaker 1: from John Mayer. Lastly, if you're in New York, I
- 8:55Speaker 1: want to give some love to my friend Adam Callen,
- 8:57Speaker 1: another past Hurdle guest. Adam recently opened a new location
- 9:02Speaker 1: of his store G and Motorcycles down in NoHo, So
- 9:06Speaker 1: if you are in the hood, definitely pop in. They'll
- 9:10Speaker 1: be super friendly, they'll make you some coffee, and they've
- 9:12Speaker 1: got some unbelievable gear of course, motorcycles and so much more.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Now we've got a listener question from Natalie Hi Emily.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I love your content in the online community that you
- 9:25Speaker 2: have created. I find myself wanting to also become a
- 9:29Speaker 2: content creator in the wellness space, but it feels like
- 9:32Speaker 2: there's so much information already out there. Do you have
- 9:35Speaker 2: any tips for finding your unique voice when there are
- 9:38Speaker 2: so many accounts sharing information. I would love to hear
- 9:42Speaker 2: your thoughts on this topic.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Thanks. I love this question, and I love it because
- 9:47Speaker 1: it's a question I get asked often. Here's the deal. Yes,
- 9:50Speaker 1: there are many different individuals, many many many, many content creators,
- 9:55Speaker 1: many news outlets, many lifestyle brands, all of these things
- 9:59Speaker 1: that are pumped out similar information. But the difference is
- 10:03Speaker 1: that everyone has their own unique angle and more specifically,
- 10:07Speaker 1: to this question, Natalie, there is only one you. You
- 10:12Speaker 1: will deliver this content in a way that no one
- 10:17Speaker 1: else will, and that is your superpower. I've said this
- 10:21Speaker 1: before and I'm going to say it again right now.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You have to be your own biggest type man, and
- 10:27Speaker 1: in creating this content. The best piece of advice that
- 10:30Speaker 1: I can give you is do it through your own lens.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Of course, you can look to people that you think
- 10:36Speaker 1: are super dope for inspiration, but when it comes to
- 10:40Speaker 1: your actual output, make sure that what you are creating
- 10:44Speaker 1: is specific and unique to you. You know, the hardest
- 10:48Speaker 1: part is starting, so get to it. I mentioned the
- 10:51Speaker 1: weekly hurdle before again, if you're not subscribed, what are
- 10:54Speaker 1: you waiting for? Seriously, make sure to subscribe today this week.
- 10:58Speaker 1: In there, I'm answering a bunch of listener questions that
- 11:02Speaker 1: came in yesterday about gear, things like how do you
- 11:05Speaker 1: make sports broad cheef stop? Can I wear regular baseball
- 11:09Speaker 1: caps for my workouts? Do you have a favorite sneaker?
- 11:11Speaker 1: Right now? My toes are getting numb when I'm running.
- 11:14Speaker 1: What's up with that? I cannot find a pair of
- 11:16Speaker 1: shorts for the life of me that don't write up?
- 11:19Speaker 1: What should I be wearing. Answers to all of that
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the Weekly Hurdle. Make sure you're following along over
- 11:25Speaker 1: with Hurdle on social It's at Hurdle Podcast. I'm at
- 11:28Speaker 1: Emily a Body, another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
