- 0:00Speaker 1: It's the twenty ninth of April twenty twenty two. CCTV
- 0:04records prison supervisor Vicky enter through a back door. Half
- 0:09a minute later, she comes back out with a prisoner,
- 0:13Casey White, a six foot nine giant of a criminal
- 0:17serving seventy five years for attempted murder. They quickly leave
- 0:21in the car as police scrambled to make sense of
- 0:24the situation. Vicki, a prison supervisor with a two decade
- 0:28long career and perfect record, just disappeared with a dangerous criminal.
- 0:33Police assumed that she was forced or manipulated into helping
- 0:37him escape. But that's when new evidence came to light,
- 0:40showing that she might have planned the entire thing. As
- 0:44a nationwide manhunt began, police would realize the rabbit hole
- 0:48went deeper than anyone expected, leading them down a dark
- 0:52path ending with Vicki found blood with a blitz in
- 0:56her head.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Therewever.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It's April twenty ninth, twenty twenty two, and prison officer
- 1:07Vicki has just told her work colleagues that she's taking
- 1:10a prisoner to a psychological evaluation at a local courthouse.
- 1:14But something isn't right. As she's transporting the prisoner alone
- 1:18despite rules mandating prisoners must be escorted by two officers
- 1:22at a time, but because of her senior position as
- 1:25a supervisor, nobody stops her and it would be six
- 1:29hours before police realize that Vicky and the prisoner are
- 1:33never coming back. Desperate for clues, police start looking into
- 1:38the man that Vicky escaped with. It was Casey White,
- 1:41a man serving seventy five years in prison for domestic violence,
- 1:45home invasion, murder, and brutally attacking a man with an axe,
- 1:49But there was one crime that stood out to police
- 1:52even more. Seven years prior to this, Casey had abused
- 1:56and manipulated his then girlfriend to a point where she
- 1:59tried to escape from Casey's vicious hands. After they successfully
- 2:04made it to her friend's house, Casey would break into
- 2:06the house with two guns and full intent to murder
- 2:10them both. Luckily, they both escaped and survived his vicious attack.
- 2:16But that's when Casey fled the scene and began a
- 2:19series of carjackings across several states until finally getting into
- 2:23a tense standoff with multiple police officers.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Down dis relaxed a little bit. Hope he's there, Hi,
- 2:43gis I will get you a time drop.
- 2:46Speaker 3: If you obey sales yet bake up, you don't get
- 2:49the whole doot on you.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's unusual, but the cops rolled a drink and a
- 2:55pack of cigarettes towards Casey, hoping this would calm him
- 2:58down and avoid a shootout. Miraculously, this actually worked, and
- 3:03the cops were able to move in and make an arrest.
- 3:06His interrogation gave cops an even clearer view into just
- 3:09how insane this man.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Was, avery way a secure saying I couldn't write no
- 3:15longer hand?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Do you regret what you did tonight?
- 3:21Speaker 3: I agree?
- 3:22Speaker 1: I think too. And police now had a clear picture
- 3:25of who Vicky just helped escape prison. But how does
- 3:28Vicky fit into all of this? She works at a
- 3:31completely different prison, and there's no plans for Casey to
- 3:34ever see outside these walls again. Well, one year later,
- 3:37Casey confessed to a murder, resulting in him being moved
- 3:41to a different prison. This kicked off a series of
- 3:44events that would eventually result in Vicky's death. The murder
- 3:48that Casey confessed to was a four year old cold case.
- 3:51It's unclear why Casey owned up to it now, but
- 3:54he was able to give specific details that nobody but
- 3:58the killer could have known, and after a short trial,
- 4:00he was quickly transported to a new prison, the same
- 4:04one where Vicky worked. Vicky is fifty six and has
- 4:08been divorced for several years and put her heart and
- 4:12soul into her job. She was a model employee and
- 4:15popular among her colleagues, but her life had become boring
- 4:19and lonely. She wanted to change, and when Casey showed up,
- 4:23that's exactly what she got. They slowly began to talk
- 4:27more and develop the connection. They bonded over their shared
- 4:30lance name and began to think that they were destined
- 4:33to be together. She started coming in on her days
- 4:36off and was noticeably happier. Despite having a great life
- 4:39on paper, Vicky had become enchanted by her feelings for
- 4:43Casey and was ready to throw it all away to
- 4:46be with a dangerous criminal. But how can this happen? Well,
- 4:50it turns out it's not as rare as you might think.
- 4:53Some people are attracted to dangerous people they know they
- 4:56could kill them at any moment, but feel special knowing
- 4:59that they choose noth On top of that, Vicky had
- 5:02started to feel trapped in her day to day life
- 5:04and as though she had nothing to live for, if
- 5:07she could make a break with Casey, it'd at least
- 5:09be exciting, even if it did mean throwing everything away.
- 5:13While Casey was serving at Lauderdale, Vicky allowed him unrestricted
- 5:17access to parts of jail that prisoners aren't normally allowed
- 5:20to see, including areas that aren't covered by security cameras.
- 5:24Many speculate this is where the pair were intimate with
- 5:27each other and formed their plan to escape. Even at
- 5:31this point, Vicky still had no idea that this would
- 5:34turn out to be the worst mistake of her entire life.
- 5:38Three days before their escape, they decided to do a
- 5:41test run after Vicky told her colleagues that Casey had
- 5:44an appointment with a judge at the courthouse. Of course,
- 5:47there was no appointment, and they just sat in her
- 5:50patrol car for nine minutes before returning. But now they
- 5:53know this works and they're ready to make preparations for
- 5:57the real thing. Two days before there was escape, there
- 6:00spotted on camera passing notes. It's thought that this was
- 6:03them discussing the final part of their escape plan, but
- 6:06by the time this footage was discovered, it was already
- 6:09too late. By April twenty ninth, twenty twenty two, everything
- 6:14was in place and they're ready to make their escape.
- 6:17As Vicky holds a senior post at the prison, she
- 6:20has certain powers that she's about to take advantage of.
- 6:23She arranges to send twelve innates and five deputies to
- 6:26court on the day of the escape, leaving her as
- 6:29the last remaining officer in the prison with transport privileges.
- 6:33She then tells her bosses that Casey has to be
- 6:35taken for a mental health evaluation. Looking at the surveillance footage,
- 6:39it's clear something was up. Vicky has her firearm with her,
- 6:44something that is strictly forbidden inside the prison walls. She's
- 6:48also walking in front of Casey instead of behind him,
- 6:51showing she trusts him not to harm her. By helping
- 6:54Casey to escape, esteemed prison officer, Vicki has thrown everything
- 6:59she had away and in one pivotal moment, has become
- 7:03a criminal.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Ky's always been a good girl at school. We've gotta
- 7:07be other people were involved, and Dicky's just escapegoat. You
- 7:11knew her, you loved her. I feel like if she
- 7:14had anything to do with it, it was definitely love.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Vicky and Casey casually walk out of the prison into
- 7:19a patrol car and drive away to freedom. It took
- 7:23six hours before anyone noticed they're missing. When the prison
- 7:27calls the courthouse to see what's taking so long, they're
- 7:29told that there is no appointment, and they come to
- 7:33the horrible realization that Casey has made a break for
- 7:37freedom To evade the authorities. They quickly ditch the patrol
- 7:40car and flee the state, and the cops now have
- 7:43no clue where they are, where they're going, or how
- 7:45to find them, marking the start of an eleven day
- 7:49manhunt that will span the nation. On day one of
- 7:52Vicky and Casey's escape, the cops try to find clues
- 7:55at Vicky's home, but she's nowhere to be seen. In fact,
- 8:00she doesn't even own the house anymore. As part of
- 8:03her plan, she sold her house for extremely cheap. With
- 8:06the money, she bought vehicles, guns, and, most suspiciously, men's clothing.
- 8:12This is the first indication the cops have that Vicki
- 8:15doesn't intend on coming back and is ready to start
- 8:17a new life with Casey. Things don't get any better
- 8:21for detectives when the patrol vehicle they used to escape
- 8:24is found abandoned at a local shopping mall, and even worse,
- 8:29there's no surveillance footage covering that area of the parking lot,
- 8:32so they don't even know which direction they went. But
- 8:36on day two of the manhunt, a tip off from
- 8:38her family blows this case wide open, as it's revealed
- 8:42Vicki has been renting a storage unit. Police are able
- 8:46to locate the storage unit and discover that she was
- 8:48renting it with a burner phone, but despite their best
- 8:51effort to track this new number, the cops came up
- 8:54with nothing. But the existence of this new phone is
- 8:57the first solid evidence that cops have showing Vicky planned
- 9:00this all along and was actually a willing participant instead
- 9:05of a hostage. Did you get since they were actually
- 9:07being discovered, he was not forcing her an equay? Right? No,
- 9:10he was not forced for her.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It was a mutual relationship.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You'd think that this would help the investigation, but things
- 9:18only get more insane and confusing from here on out.
- 9:22After realizing that they're essentially back to square one, the
- 9:25cops returned to the shopping mall where they found the
- 9:27abandoned patrol car and decided to comb through all the
- 9:30surveillance footage from the days leading up to the event.
- 9:33That's when they spot Vicky a few days before the escape,
- 9:36parking a car in a nearby parking lot. And this
- 9:39isn't her usual car either, It's one she bought only
- 9:42a couple days earlier, a two thousand and seven Ford
- 9:45Edge that the cops quickly realized had to be their
- 9:48getaway vehicle. But when police went back to the parking
- 9:51lot and the supposed getaway vehicle was still there, they
- 9:54realized that Vicky had left a decourt Police had just
- 9:58lost their only clue while giving Vicki and Casey a
- 10:01five day head start. But since they abandoned the Ford,
- 10:04the cops assumed that they have to have found another
- 10:07vehicle in the area, and lo and behold, they quickly
- 10:10picked up another lead. A homeowner nearby told them he
- 10:13sold his Ford F one fifty pickup truck to a
- 10:16man who approached his house on the day Vicki and
- 10:18Casey went missing. That man is described as being around
- 10:22six feet nine inches tall and looked exactly like the
- 10:26picture he was shown. Now all they have to do
- 10:29is find that Ford F one fifty and bring this
- 10:31man hunt to an end, and thanks to another lead,
- 10:35they're closing in. On day six, the owner of a
- 10:37car wash in Indiana noticed something strange. A Ford f
- 10:41one fifty had been parked in one of the cleaning
- 10:43bays for an unusual amount of time, and he suspects
- 10:46this vehicle has been abandoned. Unfortunately, this is before a
- 10:51search was initiated for the truck, but something still not right.
- 10:55This pickup truck is far too nice to have been
- 10:57dumped by anyone sane, and the owner quickly grew suspicious.
- 11:01In order to find out, he checks out the car
- 11:04wash surveillance footage and what he finds will help the
- 11:07cops finally capture their two fugitives. That's Casey getting out
- 11:12of the pickup and he's acting very strangely. He's waiting
- 11:16for Vicky and she's in that car driving just out
- 11:19of shot. When Casey gets in the new vehicle, leaving
- 11:22their pickup and driving off, the owner knows they're up
- 11:25to no good and calls nine to one one.
- 11:28Speaker 2: There's the truck been putting in my bay, and yesterday
- 11:31at three o'clock I looked at the camera. Then the
- 11:33guys kind of suspicient. It's a truck in college. Got
- 11:39entity right, the flight com it and I've got him
- 11:41on camera.
- 11:42Speaker 1: The next day, cops arrive at the car wash and
- 11:44initiate a search of the truck. The return to the
- 11:47dodge yep, yea with nothing to go off of. The
- 12:04cops quickly leave the scene and the pickup is towed away.
- 12:07It takes four days for this vital lead to get
- 12:10back to detectives, but when it does, they drop everything
- 12:14and head straight to Evansville. On day ten of the hunt,
- 12:17they're due to arrive at the car wash at nine am,
- 12:20but fail to show up on time, frustrating the car
- 12:23wash owners so much that he takes matters into his
- 12:26own hands and calls the local press.
- 12:28Speaker 2: So then nine thirty they're not here. So I said,
- 12:31I get on the phone and Flox news. I said,
- 12:33y'all want a store, Yeah, we like the store STI
- 12:35I got one. I got a convict over h at
- 12:38my car wars. I got him on camera. He said,
- 12:39you talking about the one in Kentucky. I said, no,
- 12:41I'm talking about the one in Alabama with the girl.
- 12:44He said, okay, we'll be right there. They showed up.
- 12:47Now you got there ten minutes before the Marshall.
- 12:50Speaker 1: US Marshalls arrived during the media frenzy, and when they
- 12:52take a look at the surveillance footage, they realize they've
- 12:56found the car Vicki and Casey could still be driving, Cadillac,
- 13:00and one that Vicki and Casey think is completely unknown
- 13:04to the cops. It seems like their days on the
- 13:08run are numbered, but even with the leads they have,
- 13:11they come up with nothing, and the cops are starting
- 13:14to realize their fugitives could be anywhere in the country,
- 13:17but as it turns out, they're closer to home than
- 13:21anyone thinks. Back in Evansville, on Day eleven, a cop
- 13:25is on his way home from a long shift when
- 13:27he sees a familiar looking vehicle parked outside of Motel
- 13:31forty one. It looks like the same Cadillac from the
- 13:34car wash, and he hastily takes down the license plate.
- 13:37The problem is the license plate of the Cadillac scene
- 13:39that the car wash was never seen, so they have
- 13:42no way of knowing if it's the same vehicle, But
- 13:44they do have the license plate of the recovered F
- 13:46one fifty, so grasping its straws. They decide to run
- 13:49that through their license plate reader, and when they do,
- 13:52they strike gold. Several traffic cameras have picked up the
- 13:55F one fifty and following it in nearly every shot
- 13:59is a Cadillac, a Cadillac whose license plate perfectly match
- 14:02the one at Motel forty one, right in front of them. Finally,
- 14:06by sheer luck, the cops have found their fugitives. All
- 14:09they have to do now is bring them in. First,
- 14:12Deputy Marshals find strategic positions around the motel. They're all
- 14:15in plane clothes and unmarked vehicles, hoping to be as
- 14:18covert as possible. But while the cops surround them, Vicky
- 14:21and Casey are in room one fifty watching the TV
- 14:24and horror right as the discovery of the Ford half
- 14:27one fifty HiT's the news. The plan was to bring
- 14:30Vicky and Casey in quietly, but before they get a
- 14:33chance to put their plan into action, Vicky walks out
- 14:35of the hotel room and throws a bag into the Cadillac.
- 14:38She's followed by Casey, and even though they're in disguise,
- 14:41there's no mistake in Casey White's massive frame Casey gets
- 14:44behind the wheel and the Cadillac takes off. The cops
- 14:47plan has been completely foiled once again, but they've got
- 14:51a backup. They're going to follow them and try to
- 14:54box them in to avoid a confrontation, but before they
- 14:57get a chance, they realize they've been spotted. Casey turns
- 15:00onto US Highway forty one and hits the accelerator, taking
- 15:03the cops on a chase across traffic and through parking
- 15:06lots until he manages to make a break for freedom
- 15:08by driving straight through and open fields. At around the
- 15:11same time, police dispatch receives a call from none other
- 15:14than Vicky herself, and it gives you an idea of
- 15:17how terrifying this chase really is. Hostile a police vehicle
- 15:28forces Casey to drive straight into a ditch, and this
- 15:31pursuit is brought to a sudden hault. But it's far
- 15:34from over, as cops know the pair are armed and
- 15:37could open fire at any point in some kind of
- 15:39Bonnie and Clyde inspired shootouts.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Are cut black worthy, physician, Please check them a lot, please,
- 16:20She's that's a best woman in quarrel right there. Please,
- 16:25that's the best woman in glorrel Vicky.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I'm so sorry by me. I'm so sorry by anybody
- 16:30in this world.
- 16:31Speaker 3: In't de sorry, but she don't when she's sappy in
- 16:34me but dying, don't blame you.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm a high outfielder.
- 16:37Speaker 3: He's like your fast everybody else.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Finally, after eleven days, the manhunt has come to an
- 16:43end and they've got Casey unharmed in handcuffs. But Vicki
- 16:47met a much more devastating end. Just two weeks ago,
- 16:51she was an upstanding member of society, an esteemed prison officer,
- 16:55respected by those around her. Now she's a fugitive laying
- 16:58in a criminal stolen car, conscious but with devastating injuries.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Are Davis your hand.
- 17:12Speaker 3: The winter handle?
- 17:19Speaker 1: Good?
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:24Speaker 2: Here to well?
- 17:27Speaker 1: I think we're gonna get the gun.
- 17:33Speaker 2: A little open that here?
- 17:35Speaker 1: We got cover?
- 17:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's opening, it's opening.
- 17:42Speaker 1: You wanna go for the gun?
- 17:43Speaker 3: Car? All right? For I got it?
- 17:47Speaker 1: I got it. She's been shot in the head, and
- 17:49Casey claims she took her own knife. When cops get
- 17:52a better look, they find her finger is still on
- 17:55the trigger of the gun. Later that day, Vicky was
- 17:58pronounced dead and in nearby hospital. We'll never really know
- 18:01what the two had planned for their life together after
- 18:04their escape, whether they wanted to go off the grid
- 18:06and settle down or live the rest of their lives
- 18:08on the run. Well, it turns out Casey never planned
- 18:11to keep Vicky around at all. He described her as
- 18:14a liability and someone that didn't have the mind for
- 18:17this sort of thing. It's likely that she would have
- 18:20been ditched shortly after this point or killed by Casey anyway.
- 18:24As he was found guilty of first degree prison escape
- 18:26and sentenced to life behind bars, he'll be ninety eight
- 18:29years old before he gets a chance at parole, so
- 18:32this terror of a man will likely be off the
- 18:35streets until the day he dies.
