- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh and running. Gosh, what a day.
- 0:04Speaker 2: This is what I can't wait to talk to Jeff Flagwald.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And the NFL does so many things right, but you know,
- 0:09Speaker 2: the NFL would love a trade deadline day that looks
- 0:11Speaker 2: like this day in the NHL. Not only does I mean, look,
- 0:14Speaker 2: it's been exciting for the Avs, but the whole NHL
- 0:17Speaker 2: is drunk.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I can't get over it. There's been so many trades today.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So Jeff Lagwald as we welcome you on, and we
- 0:22Speaker 2: want to remind everybody that Jeff's appearances are always brought
- 0:25Speaker 2: to you by.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Hold on real quick, Jeff, I'm getting it.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I'm getting it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Got to get it right, got to get the sponsor right.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He's brought to you by the National There it is
- 0:36Speaker 2: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:40Speaker 2: IBEW Local sixty eight. Start with a job, in with
- 0:42Speaker 2: a career. We got to get that start, We got
- 0:44Speaker 2: to get that right. We love our electrical workers, So
- 0:47Speaker 2: congratulations to them. Seriously, will the will the NFL ever
- 0:50Speaker 2: be able to get here? I know you're an old
- 0:52Speaker 2: NHL guy. You love to talk hockey. When we can, Jeff,
- 0:55Speaker 2: there's guys going everywhere this has just been an insane day.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And it tells you how many teams think they've got
- 1:01Speaker 2: a shot in the NHL.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Well, that's the biggest thing to me I took away
- 1:05Speaker 3: from it, as all these teams think they have they
- 1:08Speaker 3: have a chance, and the the ranting and thing. That's
- 1:12Speaker 3: that's unbelievable to me. But anyway, did.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Did some of that much tell you he thought that
- 1:17Speaker 2: might happen? Now, I was worried about Vegas, but I
- 1:19Speaker 2: believe I mentioned.
- 1:20Speaker 3: That to you. We did. That's Uh, it's gonna be
- 1:23Speaker 3: hard to take rolling in here. That's in a couple
- 1:26Speaker 3: of weeks too.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Right, literally a week from Sunday the sixteenth.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah, no, anyway, No, it's I don't think the NFL
- 1:33Speaker 3: could ever have it, just because of the structure of
- 1:35Speaker 3: the cap and the way contracts work, and that you
- 1:39Speaker 3: take the deal, uh you know, when you trade a player,
- 1:43Speaker 3: and and it just seems like a lot of the
- 1:47Speaker 3: deals in the NHL are shorter, you know, than than
- 1:49Speaker 3: some of the NFL deals of the marquee guys, at
- 1:52Speaker 3: least until they get the seven year, eight year deal
- 1:56Speaker 3: and all of those things. But yeah, that there's been
- 1:58Speaker 3: some crazy NFL trade deadlines. But it's been decreasing as
- 2:04Speaker 3: the years go by, as people get better with the CAP.
- 2:06Speaker 3: But in the early years of the CAP sometimes it
- 2:10Speaker 3: got a little nutty.
- 2:11Speaker 1: All Right, I gotta, I gotta put this out there.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Because I was mentioning payphones and stuff to Mark Springer,
- 2:15Speaker 2: who was too young to deal with those as a lad.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Somebody kept asking, didn't we get a deal screwed up
- 2:20Speaker 2: in the NFL because of the fax machine?
- 2:21Speaker 1: It was Elvis Dumerville famously, Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 3: The great, the great fax machine meltdown.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Spring's got a ton of questions and we're a little
- 2:31Speaker 2: bit uppaced, just in case Nelson calls. I want to
- 2:34Speaker 2: get as much out of you as we can before
- 2:35Speaker 2: we talk to you, as to have. But uh, you
- 2:38Speaker 2: had said earlier in the week, and I think you've
- 2:40Speaker 2: told now two shows, because I think you told the
- 2:41Speaker 2: Morning Show and you told PhD that the Broncos will
- 2:45Speaker 2: look to seek a second receiver. What isle are they
- 2:48Speaker 2: shopping in your mind? Is it the DK Metcalf file,
- 2:51Speaker 2: is it the Cooper Cup file? What are we looking at?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I don't know if we have a
- 2:55Speaker 3: good handle on that. I just know they they waved
- 2:58Speaker 3: off debo pretty hard, but they didn't even consider it.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So I think they're going to be very sort of
- 3:06Speaker 3: how he fit with the team and the offense. You know,
- 3:10Speaker 3: I know everybody's fired up about Metcalf, but I think
- 3:14Speaker 3: he's averaged sixty yards a game for the last three years.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I mean, we're not You're not getting the player at
- 3:20Speaker 3: his best year. I think sometimes we look at that
- 3:23Speaker 3: stuff and we we think we're getting the all Pro
- 3:26Speaker 3: season or you know, the best season. Gotta take it
- 3:32Speaker 3: as a whole thing. You know, would DK Metcalf succeed
- 3:35Speaker 3: in Sean Payton's offense with all the slant routes and
- 3:38Speaker 3: and all theough you know, all of those things over
- 3:41Speaker 3: the middle, Yeah, of course he would. But they that
- 3:45Speaker 3: they're a team that cannot give up draft capital. Then
- 3:48Speaker 3: they spent three years ditch and draft picks, and they
- 3:53Speaker 3: will never dig out of the hole completely if they
- 3:56Speaker 3: keep ditching draft picks. That's been proven over and over
- 3:59Speaker 3: again in the league. And I think if they had
- 4:03Speaker 3: had all their picks the last three years, I'd say
- 4:05Speaker 3: they'd be more of a player in the trade market.
- 4:08Speaker 3: But you know, I think it would be a mistake
- 4:12Speaker 3: for them to give up too much draft capital for
- 4:15Speaker 3: any receiver, And as of a few weeks ago, I
- 4:19Speaker 3: think that was their feeling in the building. Now if
- 4:21Speaker 3: they changed their mind right here on the doorstep, then
- 4:26Speaker 3: that's a whole different thing. But you can't give up
- 4:29Speaker 3: that much draft capital over three years and then think
- 4:32Speaker 3: you're a player in the trade market and think you're
- 4:35Speaker 3: going to be able to compete in the AFC and
- 4:38Speaker 3: the AFC West.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Yes, on the trade market, you got to give I
- 4:43Speaker 4: mean the Seahawks want, according to Diana Russini, a first
- 4:46Speaker 4: and a third.
- 4:47Speaker 1: What about the free agent market?
- 4:49Speaker 4: The books don't love the sports books don't love the
- 4:52Speaker 4: Broncos to get DK Metcalf. They don't love them to
- 4:55Speaker 4: go sign DeVante Adams, who's probably going to be a
- 4:57Speaker 4: little price here. But the Broncos are the fai to
- 5:00Speaker 4: sign Cooper Cup. Is that the guy?
- 5:03Speaker 3: Did?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Do? You do you think that's the guy?
- 5:05Speaker 4: Because because the the sports books are saying Cups the guy.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah, they think they have some info. I guess, uh,
- 5:13Speaker 3: you know Spring, I think he'd be the guy for
- 5:16Speaker 3: a year. I mean, you got to look at it.
- 5:18Speaker 3: You gotta look at the o'dominer on that one and
- 5:21Speaker 3: what you're doing uh to me? And with Cup it's
- 5:25Speaker 3: an age factor. You know, how much you think he's
- 5:27Speaker 3: gonna give you two years from now? Uh? And how
- 5:31Speaker 3: much are you willing to give up to do that? Uh?
- 5:34Speaker 3: But certainly again he you know, a guy with that
- 5:37Speaker 3: technical ability and route running and and you know he
- 5:43Speaker 3: he had the Triple Crown for crying out loud, he
- 5:45Speaker 3: won the Triple Crown. But you're not getting that player
- 5:48Speaker 3: right now. And that's what you have to I think
- 5:50Speaker 3: they have to consider.
- 5:52Speaker 2: All right, what do you expect Monday? The tampering begins.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Wednesday they start signing deals. We get to talk to
- 5:58Speaker 2: you Monday. What will we be talking about? Do you
- 6:00Speaker 2: think that day? What do you think might out the
- 6:03Speaker 2: door or move out the door?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yeah? I'm gonna be intrigued. And if they're you know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: if I think their draft strategy will be clear by
- 6:12Speaker 3: who they talk to, you know, if the running back
- 6:14Speaker 3: class blew them away, if you know in the pre
- 6:17Speaker 3: draft run up here, does that mean they don't talk
- 6:20Speaker 3: to a free agent running back? But I'm gonna be
- 6:23Speaker 3: intrigued to see if they're in on a tight end
- 6:25Speaker 3: like Juwan Johnson. Just to bolster things? Do they do?
- 6:30Speaker 3: They pursue a receiver, you know, uh, but I do
- 6:34Speaker 3: think defensive tackle will be at least a position they
- 6:38Speaker 3: look at and try to talk to people and see
- 6:42Speaker 3: what the numbers are, because that's that's really what's gonna happen.
- 6:45Speaker 3: That happens some at the combine a little informal of
- 6:50Speaker 3: how much is your guy looking for type thing? But
- 6:54Speaker 3: you know, the tampering period is really okay, what are
- 6:57Speaker 3: the numbers really gonna be? How much is it gonna cost?
- 7:00Speaker 3: And how many years are you looking for?
- 7:03Speaker 4: On defensive line? Zach Allen wants a contract extension. Then
- 7:08Speaker 4: I saw John Franklin Myers on Twitter say hey, I
- 7:11Speaker 4: want one too, even though he's not gonna get Zach
- 7:14Speaker 4: Allen money. Javon Hargrave, defensive tackle got released by the Niners.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Jonathan Allen got released by the Commanders.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Today.
- 7:24Speaker 4: The two dudes in house, the two dudes out of house.
- 7:28Speaker 4: What do you think they do?
- 7:30Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think the free agent receiver
- 7:34Speaker 3: market will be impacted by the glutt you know, not
- 7:37Speaker 3: everybody's gonna get money. And I think the defensive line
- 7:40Speaker 3: market I think Milton Williams will get the money. The
- 7:43Speaker 3: Eagles defensive tackle will get the contract. I think in
- 7:49Speaker 3: free agency among the defensive tackles, Broncos have to do
- 7:54Speaker 3: something I think with Zach Allen because he and Benito
- 7:57Speaker 3: will be up at the same time if they don't,
- 8:00Speaker 3: so you can either deal with one or both of
- 8:03Speaker 3: them this year, whether that's a September thing like Certain was,
- 8:09Speaker 3: you know, or Minors was later in the year. I
- 8:12Speaker 3: think in November of the season. You know, whether they
- 8:15Speaker 3: do that for Zach Allen, but Alan or Benito if
- 8:19Speaker 3: you're going to keep both. To me, I would think
- 8:22Speaker 3: in the house they think they have to do one
- 8:24Speaker 3: of them, whether it's in an extended free agency period
- 8:29Speaker 3: or right before the season or early in the season.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Real quick, Chris Godwin, what do you think is he
- 8:34Speaker 2: got a shot at getting talked to by the Broncos
- 8:36Speaker 2: because you said you're not giving up draft picks for him, right.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I wouldn't. Again. You know, they may change their mind,
- 8:43Speaker 3: but I you know, as of the combine and before that,
- 8:47Speaker 3: they were really intent on keeping as much draft capital
- 8:51Speaker 3: as they could because they know the issues that come
- 8:55Speaker 3: when you go multiple years like that it. You know,
- 8:59Speaker 3: you don't recover from that in one wild card season,
- 9:03Speaker 3: you know where you played the worst division in football
- 9:06Speaker 3: for four of your games for your wins. You don't
- 9:10Speaker 3: recover enough if you keep giving up picks. But you
- 9:14Speaker 3: know they'll look at everybody, but you know what they
- 9:17Speaker 3: will actually move on. I don't think we're gonna know
- 9:21Speaker 3: until you know, right when the everything gets going and
- 9:25Speaker 3: people start agents want to shop one offer against the other,
- 9:30Speaker 3: then I think you start. That's when you start seeing
- 9:32Speaker 3: the names. Is when the agents want Okay, I got
- 9:35Speaker 3: this from Team A, and they go to Team B,
- 9:38Speaker 3: C and D.
- 9:40Speaker 1: All right before we let you go Pats or Tans.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Talking to Rich Eisen yesterday said some of the guys
- 9:45Speaker 2: thought the Greenbrier was haunted. Did Jeff Legwall get any
- 9:48Speaker 2: of those stories out of that? Was there hauntings at
- 9:51Speaker 2: the Greenbrier?
- 9:53Speaker 3: That was definitely a topic of conversation amongst some of
- 9:57Speaker 3: the guys in some because where they had some of
- 10:02Speaker 3: them staying and then some of the outlying sort of
- 10:05Speaker 3: houses they have that next to the hotel that that
- 10:10Speaker 3: did come up. We did not have that problem twelve
- 10:13Speaker 3: miles down the road at a little cheaper hotel.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well maybe the Civil War battlefield wasn't so close
- 10:21Speaker 2: to that one.
- 10:22Speaker 3: So anyway, all.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Right, Leggy, can't wait to talk to you Monday, because
- 10:25Speaker 2: that's another fun day. We've got a great couple of
- 10:27Speaker 2: bookend days and some gay games in between. So looking
- 10:30Speaker 2: forward to talking to you Monday. Tell them we'll read
- 10:32Speaker 2: you at ESPN dot com.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Thank you, my friend.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Damn right, that's our guy.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Jeff Lagwald has always brought to you by the International
- 10:40Speaker 2: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Start with a job, in with the career
