Transcript
- 0:00Olivia and I are taking a little summer vacation, but Pop Culture Junkie never takes a break.
- 0:05Please enjoy an encore of our episode looking at the most dangerous movie ever made:
- 0:11Roar!
- 0:12♪ Entertain me, Entertain me right now! ♪
- 0:16So for this week, our producers actually asked us to watch a very strange and kind of obscure movie.
- 0:25So obscure.
- 0:25That you may have heard of or may not have, which we'll tell you all about today, called Roar.
- 0:31And it has been coined as the most dangerous movie ever made.
- 0:36And to really understand why Roar is often called the most dangerous movie ever made,
- 0:41we need to start with its inspiration, Tippy Hendren, who's known for her Alfred Hitchcock role, The Birds.
- 0:49And her husband Noel Marshall, who's passionate animal activists.
- 0:53- I love that. - But what they did.
- 0:55And whenever they first got this terrible idea, they made this new idea.
- 1:01This terrible idea is they went on a safari and it does kind of feel like White Savior goes on African safari once and says, "I could do that."
- 1:10I think I could fix everything here.
- 1:13There's nothing wrong.
- 1:15Well, you know what I mean.
- 1:16Yes, and much like the Tiger King himself, they were really fascinated by big cats.
- 1:23- And they never financially recovered.
- 1:26- They don't.
- 1:27I mean, they may have financially recovered from it.
- 1:29- Maybe not.
- 1:29- But what's crazy about this is so they go on the safari and they decide, okay, we want to make a movie about a scientist trying to prove that big cats are good and can cohabitate.
- 1:41And worthy of protecting and all this stuff.
- 1:43So in their LA mansion, they decide that they are going to start adopting big cats as cubs and raise them amongst their like small children just to make this movie.
- 1:58And so from the time that the kids were pretty young, they were raising these big cats alongside them with the dream to actually make this movie.
- 2:08- The big cats that they raised are those the ones that are in the movie with them.
- 2:12- Some of them, but no, a lot of the animals that we see in this movie are like wild animals.
- 2:18- Yeah.
- 2:19- It's pretty crazy.
- 2:21- Me watching this movie by myself and then my husband walking in and just going, what the fuck is going on?
- 2:27- That man just kept mulled by a lion.
- 2:29- Yes, actually, he did.
- 2:31- Yeah, and so when we first decided we were going to do this, you look it up on Wikipedia and it's described as an American comedy adventure film.
- 2:42- Nothing funny about this movie.
- 2:44- And it's simply audacity.
- 2:46- And you would literally think it would get set to horror movie like jaw style but put lions in there.
- 2:52- Or like trying to make it fun.
- 2:55- Yeah.
- 2:56So much of this movie has to be in proff just because of its nature.
- 3:01- Yeah.
- 3:02- Because there is a very loose script.
- 3:06There's a plot in there somewhere.
- 3:09But you can't really have a script and a plot if your co-stars are literal wild animals.
- 3:17So like to describe this to people listening, they have this family.
- 3:22Well, it's this man, the scientist, right?
- 3:24And he lives in this house with lions and tigers and papyrus.
- 3:28- Like a cop.
- 3:29- He is so mulled.
- 3:30- Yeah.
- 3:31Like all the types of big cats as a scientist.
- 3:32- There's dozens of these things.
- 3:34- Out there and is trying to do like conservation and convince like these poachers not to kill all the big cats.
- 3:41- Yes.
- 3:42- And so he's kind of doing this experiment.
- 3:44And in very straightforward dialogue that you heard.
- 3:48- Straight forward dialogue.
- 3:49- The rest of the family is coming to visit this man.
- 3:52- And the estranged wife.
- 3:54- Yeah, estranged wife.
- 3:55- They're going to visit him.
- 3:57He gives them no prep.
- 3:59- No.
- 4:00- Even how to really get there.
- 4:01He's like, get on the bus.
- 4:02- Like pass away when you get here.
- 4:04- Don't worry.
- 4:05- Yeah.
- 4:06- Tells them nothing about how to handle a lion or a big cat.
- 4:09Anything like he doesn't say don't run.
- 4:11Don't do that.
- 4:12- It doesn't do shit.
- 4:13- It's like if you were just going to put someone in a pack of like a ring of bears and be like, good luck.
- 4:18- It's like me inviting Olivia to my house and not warning her that I have a cat.
- 4:22- Yeah.
- 4:23- And then she walks in and it's like, wise by throat closing.
- 4:25- And I'm like, just fine.
- 4:28She's nice to look at her rubbing her on your face.
- 4:31- Yeah.
- 4:32- Literally the director, Noel is also starring in it.
- 4:35And the only dialogue he has is just don't run.
- 4:39- Act like you're bigger than them.
- 4:41It's like all he says the whole time, but he couldn't put it in a letter.
- 4:44- Yeah, no.
- 4:45- But you know what's funny is I still can't wrap my head around.
- 4:49His dialogue in the movie is actually just us watching this man tell his co-stars things.
- 4:57Because people are being actually mulled on camera in this movie.
- 5:02It's not fake.
- 5:03We're watching people actually blood dripping down their faces.
- 5:07And he's like, it's fine.
- 5:09Just don't run.
- 5:11Roll over and I'm just reciting their mouths open.
- 5:14Like, no, he's literally, we're watching a person get mulled by a tiger.
- 5:17- It's actually crazy.
- 5:19And so, yeah, untrained animals, not even like these, it's insane.
- 5:25- So they're trying to follow this plot, but again, things get sidetracked a lot because animals can't read.
- 5:31- You have to read your notes.
- 5:32So Shana text me and she's like, the acting in this is so bad.
- 5:36And I'm like, how do you act when you might die?
- 5:39- No.
- 5:40- So I have three notes from watching the movie.
- 5:42Three.
- 5:43Number one.
- 5:44Wow, this acting is awful.
- 5:48Number two.
- 5:49Holy shit, this is insane.
- 5:53Number three.
- 5:54- Those tigers in your water just want to play LOL.
- 5:59That's it.
- 6:01There's tigers jump on these boats that these people are there and they submerge the boat underwater.
- 6:07And then you can tell just like, they're just like, oh, we play now.
- 6:11- So cute.
- 6:12- And so cute.
- 6:13- And the human's under the water.
- 6:14- It is so cute.
- 6:15- And then the span emerges with just blood streaming down his face.
- 6:19- It is crazy.
- 6:20- So we'll talk a little bit about the injuries that came from it.
- 6:25Now 70 people on Casting Crew were harmed in the making of this film.
- 6:31- I guess I want to mention that Melanie Griffith is in this movie.
- 6:34- Yes.
- 6:35- Like an actual well-known actress.
- 6:37- Yeah.
- 6:38- I do not know that until I turn it on.
- 6:39- It's their daughter.
- 6:40- Yeah.

- 6:47- What's she doing?
- 6:50- She was one of the kids raised among the lions.
- 6:52- Stuff.

- 6:55It's a big thing.

- 7:00She's just cute.
- 7:01- She did Kiddie's.

- 9:34- This isn't a good argument.
- 9:35- Don't that babe.
- 9:36- Fuck with wildlife.
- 9:37- Don't insert yourself into this and be like, oh, I can live with them.
- 9:44Oh, it's great.
- 9:45It's going to be fun.
- 9:46It's giving in note when they had the monkey on the set.
- 9:50- Like, oh, we contain the monkey and then he mulls everyone.
- 9:53- Yeah.
- 9:54- Obviously, that's fiction.
- 9:55But wild animals are not your pets and they're not your roommates.
- 10:00- Right.
- 10:01- And there are ways that we can preach conservation without...
- 10:05- Yeah, this was not...
- 10:06- This was not the argument they thought.
- 10:08In fact, it's like, oh my god, no, we cannot cohabitate, which is even crazier.
- 10:13- Exactly.
- 10:14- That's what I thought too.
- 10:15I was like, if he's making the argument throughout this film, that big cats are important
- 10:19and should be saved and protected.
- 10:21Yes, I agree with that.
- 10:22But then you produce this whole film that just shows people screaming and running and being
- 10:26mulled.
- 10:27- Yeah, so...
- 10:28- So, at the end of the film, you're like, oh, I don't want to be around these guys.
- 10:32They're going to kill me.
- 10:33- Yeah.
- 10:34Well, I was reading somewhere that they thought they could make the movie in six months, but
- 10:38it would take them three million to do it all.
- 10:42Now, not just working with wild, unpredictable animals, the set...
- 10:47Like, this film should have never been made because not only were animals attacking everyone
- 10:54everywhere, it was filmed near LA.
- 10:56- It was in the United States.
- 10:58- Yeah, but there was a flooding incident that actually flooded the entire set and lost
- 11:03a lot of it away.
- 11:04- It's like a really big, full set.
- 11:06- Animals were being temporarily displaced or some of them even passed away in the flooding.
- 11:12- Yeah.
- 11:17- With crew challenges, we talked a lot about the injuries from the animals, but then there
- 11:19was also numerous cases of gang green.
- 11:22- There's so much gang green.
- 11:23- Like, literally, no martial-contracted gang green from these numerous.
- 11:27- I love you, Sid and Tex earlier, and it auto-cracked it to gang green.
- 11:31And it ran, it was like, how's the dragon?
- 11:34- Yeah.
- 11:35- Sweet shit, are you gang green now?
- 11:36Allison, what are you doing here?
- 11:37- I'm doing shit.
- 11:38- We seem black.
- 11:39- Listen, gang green.
- 11:41- Gang green.
- 11:42- Yes, lots of people got gang green.
- 11:44- Yes.
- 11:45- And two lions died because of the flooding and I think they escaped.
- 11:51- Yeah, and they were shot by authorities.
- 11:53- They, I don't want to, you know, they escaped.
- 11:58- It's crazy to think about there were wildfires also.
- 12:04- Yeah.
- 12:05- God did not, whatever, did not want this movie to come out.
- 12:09- The main character, lion, which is a stupid sentence.
- 12:13- Robbie?
- 12:14- Yeah, Robbie died.
- 12:15- Yeah, yeah, that was actually, actually died.
- 12:18- He actually won the escape.
- 12:20- Yes.
- 12:21- So the tiger that played, is Robbie, is they, what a stupid, fucking name is a lion?
- 12:25- Yeah.
- 12:26- That tiger.
- 12:27- Little name Robert.
- 12:28- Robert L. Tiger.
- 12:29- I don't know.
- 12:30- Robert L. Tiger.
- 12:31- I don't know.
- 12:32- Robert L. Tiger.
- 12:33- Do you think they're the same thing?
- 12:35- Robert T. Lion.
- 12:36- Robert T. Lion.
- 12:38- Sean learned nothing.
- 12:40She's still stuck on the little swimming tiger.
- 12:43- So listen, they were big meow meow.
- 12:45I was in a toast watched it with me.
- 12:47She's like, that's me.
- 12:48- I know, sweetie, that's you.
- 12:50- You're cute, you're cute.
- 12:51- You're cute.
- 12:52- Much of those fishes.
- 12:53- You'll never mull my face.
- 12:54- Oh, that one died by me.
- 12:55- Robbie died.
- 12:56- Robbie escaped during filming and authorities shot him.
- 13:02- And he was replaced with a look-a-like lion for the rest of filming.
- 13:06- Oh wow.
- 13:07- I don't know what was going on.
- 13:08- I just can't get him out there.
- 13:09- I don't know.
- 13:10- Oh my god, this is another Meet the Falkers reference.
- 13:12(laughs)
- 13:13When he loses Robert's nearest cat and finds the other one like timepaste.
- 13:17- This tail black.
- 13:18- Yeah.
- 13:19- And it's like.
- 13:20- You're kidding.
- 13:21- It's you.
- 13:22- I will say, I thought it was so funny how hard they tried to commit to the lion story line.
- 13:29- Like the fighting story line.
- 13:30- Yeah, like they were like really trying to put him in there.
- 13:33- And then at the end they were like, it's just too chaotic.
- 13:35We can't even do it.
- 13:36- These lions are following direction in the slightest.
- 13:39Like they were like, he's really going for it.
- 13:42It's all the problem.
- 13:43And then Josie ended.
- 13:44She was like, "Ahhhhhh."
- 13:45- At one point in the hallway.
- 13:47I'm gonna get stuff laughing at this stupid fucking movie.
- 13:51At one point in the hallway, all of the lions are in the house and they all leave.
- 13:54And there's one tiger.
- 13:55Like keep saying tiger.
- 13:57There's one lion that's still laying there.
- 13:59And he's walking up.
- 14:00He's like, "Oh, come on.
- 14:01You don't want to hear with your buddies."
- 14:03- Come on.
- 14:04And like sad music kicks in.
- 14:06And then you could tell that he's ad-libbing and he's like, "Your dad's gonna be okay."
- 14:11- Don't worry about it.
- 14:12- You gotta go out there, boy.
- 14:13- You gotta go out there and be with your other buds.
- 14:16And the lion's just like, "Rahhh."
- 14:18- And the lion.
- 14:19- I don't speak English.
- 14:21- It got like 7th heaven for a second.
- 14:23Like somehow.
- 14:24Like the music slightly played.
- 14:26- It was like light piano.
- 14:27- And the music was like,
- 14:28"I found that wheat pipe in your backpack, buddy."
- 14:31- You gotta know drugs aren't cool.
- 14:33- It's okay that you kissed your sister because you wanted to know what a kiss felt like.
- 14:38- Oh no, oh god.
- 14:39- You don't remember that episode of 7th heaven?
- 14:42- I forgot about it.
- 14:44- Oh my god.
- 14:46- Yeah.
- 14:47- It's giving out of the dragon again.
- 14:50- Yeah.
- 14:51- Again.
- 14:52- Upsass.
- 14:53- When he walks in, like,
- 14:54- I was a little liger dragon.
- 14:55- A liger?
- 14:56- Yeah.
- 14:57- I was a liger.
- 14:58That's what we're calling this.
- 14:59- You renamed it.
- 15:00- I'm gonna cut.
- 15:01- I was gonna say something.
- 15:04But everything is just so stupid that I can't remember what I was gonna say.
- 15:09Deep cleansing breaths.
- 15:11Please, everyone watch this.
- 15:13Maybe I stringed it for free on YouTube.
- 15:15The entire thing is on YouTube.
- 15:16- Oh, I watched it on the flash drive.
- 15:18- Oh, I know.
- 15:19- That's smarter.
- 15:20No, I think it would be a great drinking game with friends.
- 15:25- Oh my god.
- 15:26- Any time somebody, any time you see blood that you go, "That's not prop blood."
- 15:32I'm watching an actual person.
- 15:33- You might die, though.
- 15:34- Have a drink.
- 15:35- I guess by the time this comes out, we should release our official roar drinking game.
- 15:40- You and I need to play it first to make sure we don't pass away.
- 15:43- Yeah, that's probably pretty true.
- 15:45So if you see it, then we didn't die.
- 15:49- We don't condone binge drinking.
- 15:52I love you and I are.
- 15:54- No.
- 15:55- Go into it, knowing that it is a very bad movie, but it is very worth it.
- 16:01- If you're squeamish, don't watch it.
- 16:04I would say watch it just, I didn't know about this until our producers told us about it.
- 16:09I'm so glad that I have this rep in my brain now.
- 16:13It's got a cult following because it's insane that people made it.
- 16:18- Literally the most.
- 16:19The budget just went so above and beyond because like you said earlier, the set was destroyed
- 16:24in that flood.
- 16:25- Yeah.
- 16:26- It should rebuild the entire set and they said they could do it in six years, ended up taking
- 16:30like what, four years or something crazy.
- 16:33- Yeah.
- 16:34- It took a lot of time.
- 16:35It took a lot more money than they thought I would.
- 16:37And then they recently released it by only the sun, John, would help with promoting of the
- 16:47film.
- 16:48- I think Griffith interestingly still is like I think that big cats and humans should
- 16:55come have a day or you think that.
- 16:57- Or really?
- 16:58- But I think this was just a crazy white savior movie.
- 17:01Like I could do that.
- 17:02Let me bring them to a way.
- 17:04- Yeah.
- 17:05And they do some little thing in the beginning where they thank the tribe that appears unfilm.
- 17:09That you can tell it's an actual indigenous African tribe.
- 17:13- And it was something that all of a sudden made me laugh in the beginning of the movie where
- 17:16like even though it might seem like animals are harmed in this movie, none of them actually
- 17:21were.
- 17:22- Like what about the humans man?
- 17:23- Well and the two lions that were born by the police.
- 17:30To be fair, when they it shows like at the end like the lions are being shot.
- 17:34It's with tranquilizer darts and they said it's because they used the tranquilizer darts
- 17:39to put the lions to go meanies.
- 17:42And it's time for their vaccines to get their nails clipped or whatever.
- 17:46So they just shot them with the tranquilizer darts and then we're like, all right we have
- 17:49one as well give them their flu vaccines while they're out.
- 17:55So I think that's what they meant.
- 17:57But they just conveniently kind of brushed over the lions that died.
- 18:02- The Robbie the lead star that died.
- 18:04- And another reason to go a cab.
- 18:07- They killed the lion.
- 18:08- They killed the tiger.
- 18:09- They killed Robbie.
- 18:10- They killed Robbie.
- 18:11- They killed Robbie.
- 18:12- They killed Robbie and Tonka.
- 18:15- Toobar.
- 18:16- Toobar.
- 18:17- I don't remember.
- 18:18- I don't remember.
- 18:19- Like I said they didn't really stick to the lion plot too long.
- 18:23- The lion plot is very loose here.
- 18:24- But the lion plot was probably the best part of it and even then it still wasn't good.
- 18:29- They tried to convince animals that they have lions in a plot in a movie and they just
- 18:36see what happens.
- 18:37- You're mad at him.
- 18:38- Yeah.
- 18:39- Now go.
- 18:40- They're like, "Oh shit, they're licking each other's genitals."
- 18:42- Yeah.
- 18:43- Oh I'm cut.
- 18:44- Honestly the cut I just kept doing, they were like, "That's, that bino made a better."
- 18:49- We have time now.
- 18:50- Yeah.
- 18:51- We play?
- 18:52I take that.
- 18:53- This should have had more tiger swimming.
- 18:55Only review and note that I have for it.
- 18:58- The acting is bad.
- 18:59Holy shit this is insane.
- 19:00Oh my god the tigers are swimming.
- 19:02LOL.
- 19:03Done.
- 19:04That's it.
- 19:05- Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:06Well I think, you know, let's continue.
- 19:10After this movie, you know, we started to use CGI animals a lot more especially when it
- 19:15came to lions and tigers and bears.
- 19:19And I think that we should continue that trend and support land.
- 19:25- I agree.
- 19:26- Let's exploit animals.
- 19:27Yeah, let's dedicate some land.
- 19:29Let's support them in that way.
- 19:31And not, you know, Melanie Griffiths head.
- 19:35- Yeah, no notes.
- 19:36- I agree.
- 19:37- So I bless Melanie Griffiths skull and scalp.
- 19:40- Yeah, I wonder if insurance, like ever insured him ever again.
- 19:45- Oh my god, right.
- 19:46- You did it right?
- 19:48- No.
- 19:49- You killed me.
- 19:50- I'm never gonna funny.
- 19:51- I actually recovered from it.
- 19:52- No, Marshall, I think your policy was cut.
- 19:55- He's done.
- 19:56- Stay far.
- 19:57- We're just not gonna back here.
- 19:58- Like a good neighbor, we're moving away.
- 20:00- Yeah.
- 20:01- I don't know why I got country.
- 20:04- Before this, he actually also produced the exorcist, which is, I think we talked about
- 20:09in this podcast before, like it being cursed and the set being cursed.
- 20:13Some people say this also had the curse of the exorcist, just kind of marinating on top.
- 20:19- What an ambitious choice.
- 20:21- Exorcism to lion.
- 20:25- I mean, those are two of my favorite things.
- 20:28- Demons and lions.
- 20:29- Yes.
- 20:30- Okay.
- 20:31- Demons and cats.
- 20:32- Oh, okay.
- 20:33- He's a goth.

- 20:35TSS detaining him.
- 20:38- You just went to goth over the last few years.

- 20:43- So the toba-tunka, whatever, is he the goth flying then?
- 20:49Because he is the darker.
- 20:51- He was the one covered in blood a lot too, huh?
- 20:53- Yeah, that's pretty goth.
- 20:54- Oh, absolutely.
- 20:55Oh, he's metal as fuck.
- 20:56- Okay, okay.
- 20:57There we go.
- 20:58Like we said, bad movie, highly recommend watching.
- 21:01It's like the killer sloth movie, the sloth movie.
- 21:05- Oh yeah, I haven't watched the sloth in eight years.
- 21:07- Oh, it's so good.
- 21:09We might have to do that one next for my god.
- 21:11- Oh my god.
- 21:12- Weird, crazy, funky animal movies.
- 21:13- I would love to watch that.
- 21:14There's no part of me that doesn't want to watch that
- 21:17unless the sloth dies.
- 21:18- Well, it's like an evil sloth.
- 21:20- I know, but he's still a good boy.
- 21:21- I want to get like really, really stoned
- 21:23and watch his hilariously bad scary animal movie.
- 21:27Like it just scratches an itch.
- 21:29- I recently did eight legged freaks.
- 21:33- Oh my God. - So good.
- 21:34- I watched that with my husband like within the last year.
- 21:37- It's so good. - I did not get crazy, high and watch it.
- 21:39- Yeah, for slightly drunk.
- 21:41- Luzer. - Luzer.
- 21:42(laughs)
- 21:44- But no, highly recommend.
- 21:46So maybe we'll do a few of those.
- 21:48- It sounds like a creature feature.
- 21:49- A creature feature.
- 21:50- I mean, I love me some cocaine bear.
- 21:52- Oh.
- 21:53(laughs)
- 21:54- I love me so cocaine bear.
- 21:57- The film.
- 21:59- That is such a good one.
- 22:00I want more Elizabeth thanks.
- 22:02- I want more cocaine movies.
- 22:04- Bear. - Yeah.
- 22:05- Type movies.
- 22:06- Yes, the cadence.
- 22:07The cadence is important.
- 22:08- Elizabeth Banks, maybe.
- 22:09- The more Elizabeth Banks.
- 22:11- Creature features for you.
- 22:12- Yeah, with cocaine.
- 22:13- With cocaine.
- 22:14- If there happens to be animals on cocaine.
- 22:16- That's funny.
- 22:17She just goes through and makes them all.
- 22:19- Cocaine cat.
- 22:20- She'll be cocaine horse.
- 22:22- She re-makes roar, but he's just a cocaine lion.
- 22:26- The actual lion subplot is there.
- 22:28- Going over like a mob boss.
- 22:31(laughs)
- 22:33- But for realism,
- 22:34she make it a direct sequel to roar.
- 22:36They actually give actual lions cocaine.
- 22:38- Yeah.
- 22:39(laughs)
- 22:40- We need it for realism sake.
- 22:42- Yeah.
- 22:43- Put my stepdaughter in there and see how she does.
- 22:46Go.
- 22:47(laughs)
- 22:49- Well, I'd make that movie.
- 22:51- God, she was scound.
- 22:52- Shit.
- 22:53- I think we're gonna get the backing of the studios.
- 22:57- Oh, it does.
