Transcript
- 0:00Are you like me? Do you ever wonder why your
- 0:02Parkinson's symptoms are smooth one day and totally
- 0:05unpredictable the next? Why your meds last forever on
- 0:08Tuesday but barely do anything on Wednesday?
- 0:11Because for years, that was me, too.
- 0:13I tried everything to figure it out.
- 0:15Fancy apps contemplated complicated spreadsheets,
- 0:18journals I'd abandoned by Day 4. Nothing helped me to understand
- 0:21why my days were so different. And I know a lot of you feel the
- 0:24same. You're trying to make sense of
- 0:26this body that keeps changing the rules.
- 0:28And then one day I found the simplest tracking system ever.
- 0:32No apps, no tech, no stress. And I've used it every day for
- 0:35eight years. And today I'm going to show you
- 0:37how to actually read your tracking so you finally
- 0:40understand your on times, your off times, and the patterns that
- 0:44you didn't even know were shaping your day.
- 0:48Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad
- 0:52and the reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:56community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin well.
- 1:00Welcome back and if you're new here, I'm Bryce and I've been
- 1:02living with Parkinson's now for over 15 years.
- 1:06And around here we break everything down into real talk.
- 1:08No jargon, no lectures, no guilt, just the truth about
- 1:12living with Parkinson's and how to actually make your life
- 1:14easier. And hey, if that sounds like
- 1:17something you need, then hit subscribe.
- 1:19I'd really have love to have you stick around and stick around
- 1:22with me till the very end because the Bryce system at the
- 1:24end of this episode telling you this one hits home and it might
- 1:28be a little bit of A twist in there.
- 1:29That might just be a little bit too true.
- 1:32All right, let's get into this and remember this is episode 2
- 1:35of our three-part tracking series.
- 1:37Episode 1 was all about what to write down in the very beginning
- 1:40and today is about how to understand it.
- 1:42And then in episode 3, coming up next, that's the one where we're
- 1:45going to take all of this tracking data straight into your
- 1:48neurologist office and actually get results.
- 1:51I'm going to give you the exact script that I use when I talk to
- 1:53my doctor. But first I want to hear from
- 1:55you. Drop a comment and tell me how
- 1:57tracking went yesterday, right? Anything surprising?
- 2:00Anything confusing? I love reading your stuff and I
- 2:03read every single comment. All right, well let's get into
- 2:07the good stuff. Let's talk about calculating
- 2:10your on time, OK? And on time is that stretch of
- 2:15time where your medications are doing what they're supposed to
- 2:17do, right? You took your pill, you waited,
- 2:20you started to feel the stiffness ease or whatever,
- 2:23whatever your symptoms are. The tremor softened, your
- 2:27movement got easier, and that was the start of your on time
- 2:31window. So let's walk through it like
- 2:33we're sitting at the kitchen table, OK?
- 2:35Somebody takes their meds at 8:00 AM.
- 2:37They feel them. They feel them kick in, let's
- 2:39say at 8:45. Symptoms start creeping back in
- 2:43around 11:30. Now that's their on time, right?
- 2:498:45 to 11:30 makes sense. Easy, straightforward.
- 2:55It's real life turned into real information, right?
- 2:59And if you've already figured out your own morning on time,
- 3:02put morning in the comments. I want to cheer you along.
- 3:05OK? So that was very simple. 8:45 to
- 3:0711:30, that's your on time. So let's calculate our off time.
- 3:11OK, now it's just a simple, but nobody ever explains it like
- 3:15this. You're off time is is the
- 3:18stretch after your symptoms return until your next dose
- 3:21kicks in. So using the same example, the
- 3:24same person that feels as if they felt their symptoms return
- 3:27at 11:30, OK, the next dose then kicks in at 12:40.
- 3:33So that's about 70 minutes of off time.
- 3:37Now this is where tracking becomes so powerful because once
- 3:40you can see both your on times and your and your off times,
- 3:45your whole day starts to make a lot more sense.
- 3:49Now, if you've noticed any off times creeping in during the
- 3:52afternoon, hit that like button. So I know that this is starting
- 3:55to hit home. OK, let's just hammer that like
- 3:57button and see everybody's the same in these ways.
- 3:59OK, So why your meds behave this way?
- 4:04Well, let's talk about that. Why does it happen?
- 4:07And you know me, we're going to do this in plain English.
- 4:09I don't want to get all sciency on you, but inside your body,
- 4:12levodopa burns fast, right? Half of it is gone about 90
- 4:17minutes after you take it. And that's called the half life,
- 4:21which basically means that your body is a levodopa furnace,
- 4:24right? It burns, it uses it, and then
- 4:27it moves on. So for most people, meds last
- 4:30somewhere between 2:00 and 4:00 hours.
- 4:34And here's the fun part. Life jumps.
- 4:36Life jump kicks your schedule every single day.
- 4:40Sleep, stress, protein. Timing, right?
- 4:44Walking more than usual. Walking less than usual.
- 4:47Being anxious, being excited. Weather, humidity, family
- 4:50arguments, Right. The car alarm goes off at 6:00
- 4:53AM. The cat's scratching at the
- 4:54window. You know what I mean, right?
- 4:57All of it can change your medication timing.
- 5:00Unbelievable. And tracking let's you see which
- 5:04of those things are messing with your day.
- 5:07Now how about this? If life messes, if life messes
- 5:11with your meds this week, drop a Yep in the comments.
- 5:15Let's get a little honesty going down down there.
- 5:17Yep. Tell you what, life just gets in
- 5:19the way. OK, so now let's look at these
- 5:23patterns because this is the important part.
- 5:25You're going to start seeing patterns if you start tracking
- 5:28this the way I'm telling you to do it.
- 5:30And as I go through these, I wanted you to check in with
- 5:32yourself, OK? If one sounds like your life,
- 5:34say so in the comments because trust me, someone else is going
- 5:37to say the same or thinking the same.
- 5:40But here's pattern. Here's an example.
- 5:42Pattern number one, this is a classic, OK?
- 5:44This is what I call the breakfast effect.
- 5:46OK, someone takes their meds at, let's say 8:00 AM.
- 5:50Most days they kick in at 8:45. Beautiful, predictable, right?
- 5:54You know it. You know when to start feeling
- 5:56it. But on the days they skip
- 5:58breakfast, nothing happened till 9:20 and they're standing there
- 6:03thinking, are my meds broken today?
- 6:06No, it's just that your stomach and your digestion were saying
- 6:09like, Hey, you changed the plan. So I changed the plan the the
- 6:13timing. Now can that happen?
- 6:16Absolutely it happens. Talk to your neighbor, talk to
- 6:20your neighbor, talk to somebody, put it in the comments and at
- 6:22breakfast, if you all of a sudden are starting to realize
- 6:25when you look at this, if your meds are affected differently
- 6:28when you have around breakfast time, just like breakfast in the
- 6:30comments, you'll be shocked by how many people say yes or like
- 6:33it because breakfast can mess with your levidopa.
- 6:38OK, Now once you notice that you start discovering other things,
- 6:43OK, like this here, here's another example and this one
- 6:46hits a lot of people. OK, I call it the the 3:00 PM
- 6:50crash OK right around 3:00 PM for a lot of people, things drop
- 6:56the fog, the heaviness, the Why do my my legs weigh 80 lbs
- 7:00feeling. Most people assume that their
- 7:02meds are just wearing off early. But when you start to track it
- 7:06for a few days, you see it's usually sleep.
- 7:11Parkinson's sleep is rough, right?
- 7:12It's like pretending to rest while your brain is hosting A
- 7:15rave. It's crazy.
- 7:17So in that situation, it's not the meds failing.
- 7:21It's a tired brain dragging everything down.
- 7:24And by 3:00, your brains like, I am so tired because we didn't
- 7:27sleep last night that I'm going to just stop working.
- 7:31So there, if you're if you're a 3:00 PM crasher, hit that like
- 7:34button so I don't feel alone. And as another example, OK, and
- 7:39this one shows up in tracking all the time.
- 7:42And I call this one the the weekend Miracle.
- 7:45OK so here's a fun one. Someone's meds last 2 1/2 hours
- 7:50on Monday to Friday. OK so they take their meds and
- 7:52about they you know when they start they're all kicking in
- 7:55till when they start kicking out like 2 1/2 hours.
- 7:57OK Monday to Friday. But suddenly on Saturday boom
- 8:03they're lasting 3 1/2 hours and they're thinking, did I
- 8:07magically get cured for the weekend?
- 8:09Well no, it's stress relief. Your nervous system relaxes and
- 8:14your meds go further. Weekend dopamine is undefeated.
- 8:19Did you know that? So that that stress, that stress
- 8:22relief, it's just things loosen up and they just can get there.
- 8:25And so how about, you know, if your weekends feel easier for
- 8:28you, tell me the comments, tell everybody in the comments.
- 8:30Yeah, weekends. Like I noticed that.
- 8:31I can see that. But you'll don't start really
- 8:34seeing this until you start writing it down and tracking it.
- 8:37That's the important part. If you can start circling,
- 8:40circling things like, hey, it happened again.
- 8:42Hey, it happened again and hey, it happened again.
- 8:46And they can start you start putting the pieces together of
- 8:48this puzzle. OK.
- 8:50And that actually leads me to today's solo spotlight.
- 8:54You know, for the people doing this entirely on their own, no
- 8:57care partner, no second set of eyes, just you, you know,
- 9:00learning your symptoms and taking control of your day.
- 9:03And listen, you're stronger than you think.
- 9:06So here's a tip that's going to make tracking easier for you.
- 9:09Use your phone to mark the moment that your symptoms
- 9:14change. A quick voice memo, a timestamp,
- 9:18right? Even a simple note button.
- 9:20Because the hardest part of tracking alone is remembering
- 9:23exactly when the shift happened. And that one habit keeps your
- 9:27data honest, right? And it takes all the pressure
- 9:30off your memory. True story.
- 9:33So. And if you're tracking solo,
- 9:35give me a solo in the comments just so I can cheer you on
- 9:37because I love cheering you on. Now let's shift over to
- 9:41something really important and something that everybody's
- 9:44starting to love around here. It's Carmen's care partner
- 9:46Corner, and this is written in her words, and I'm going to read
- 9:49it exactly the way she wrote it. And here's what she had to say
- 9:53to this. When Bryce started tracking his
- 9:56symptoms, it didn't just help him, it helped me understand
- 9:59him. Before tracking, I only saw the
- 10:02outside. I saw the moments he slowed down
- 10:05or looked uncomfortable, but I didn't always understand why.
- 10:09Once he started writing down his on times and his off times and
- 10:13the patterns in between, it gave me what I call a map to his day.
- 10:19And suddenly I could see which moments were part of the
- 10:22disease, not personal or emotional.
- 10:26Tracking doesn't just change the experience for the person with
- 10:28Parkinson's, it changes it for the people who love them too.
- 10:35Thank you Carmen. So let's wrap this up a little
- 10:38bit here. You know now how to find your on
- 10:41time and you know how to find your off time.
- 10:45And if you're still struggling or you're still kind of
- 10:47confused, go back and re watch that first part again.
- 10:50Just calculate your on time and your off time.
- 10:53OK, That's that's really, really important.
- 10:55And you know now how to see why your meds work the way they do.
- 10:59OK, and you're starting to spot the patterns that shape your
- 11:02day. You start seeing things that
- 11:04start to all of a sudden get the aha moments.
- 11:08And what I would love, I'd love to know the number one thing
- 11:10that you learned from tracking this week.
- 11:12OK, So if you've learned something already, let me know
- 11:15in the comments. Just say, hey, I saw something
- 11:17that was similar from this day and this day.
- 11:19And I'm telling you, the more you do this, the easier it's
- 11:22going to get and the more consistent you're going to be.
- 11:24And I would love you to tell me in the comments, if you were
- 11:27able today, tomorrow or yesterday, calculate how much on
- 11:33time and off time you had because that would be cool.
- 11:36So in the comments, it's been like, you know, whatever, I'm
- 11:38just throwing numbers out there, 5 on time hours and six off time
- 11:43hours, whatever it is. It'd be interesting to see, you
- 11:45know, what you're dealing with and what other people are
- 11:47dealing with and how some are so much different than than ours
- 11:50because this is a community, you know, it's not just about me
- 11:53just spewing stuff. We need to make a conversation
- 11:56about this. We need to talk about this and
- 11:57we need to help each other through this.
- 11:59And in the comments, if you don't understand, if you're
- 12:01struggling to understand it, please ask.
- 12:03And you know what? If you understand it and you see
- 12:05a comment, jump in there. Help them.
- 12:07It's not just about Bryce. OK, you know what is just about
- 12:12Bryce, though? The Bryceism of the episode.
- 12:15And here it is with Parkinson's tracking is like turning on
- 12:20subtitles for your body. It shows you what's happening,
- 12:24even when the plot makes no sense.
- 12:27And the twist? Some days my subtitles pop up
- 12:31and just say Nope. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 12:36All right. Well, if this helps you hit that
- 12:37like button and if it really helps the channel when you do
- 12:40that. So share this with somebody who
- 12:41needs it and make sure that you don't, that you're subscribed so
- 12:44you don't miss episode 3 because I'm going to give you my exact
- 12:48script that I use with my neurologist.
- 12:51And I finally started getting results, right?
- 12:53And I took it right out of my tracking.
- 12:57There you go. So until next time, I thank you
- 13:00so much for being here, thank you for being a part of this
- 13:02channel, thank you for being a part of my life, and I'm happy
- 13:05that you're letting me into yours.
- 13:06Until next time, keep showing up, you keep being real, you
- 13:09keep tracking and you keep doing LIFE Today and I'll see you in
- 13:14the 3rd episode. Parkinson's may be part of your
- 13:19life, but it doesn't get to define it.
