- 0:01She stopped at mile 160, but she didn't quit.
- 0:05There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1126 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Doctor Terry Wurzbacher.
- 0:20Here's the upgrade ending. Something can feel like failing,
- 0:24but Upgraded thinking knows some endings are necessary to make
- 0:26room for what comes next. Here's the story.
- 0:30If you've been with me a while, you know Doctor Terry.
- 0:33I've been telling you pieces of her story since message 583.
- 0:37She's 77 years old. She spent her career as an
- 0:40emergency room doctor in the military.
- 0:42She was a warrior until the chaplain gave her a sentence
- 0:45that changed her life. Everything always works out for
- 0:48me. I've adopted that sentence as
- 0:51one of my own core beliefs. This week, Doctor Terry was out
- 0:55on the Ball State 500, a 314 mile race across Tennessee.
- 1:01She's finished that race before. This year at 77 years old, she
- 1:06covered more than 160 miles before back spasms made it
- 1:09necessary to end her race. Notice the word I chose
- 1:14necessary. Doctor Henry Cloud wrote a book
- 1:17called Necessary Endings. His central picture is a rose
- 1:20Bush. A rose Bush produces more buds
- 1:22than it can support. A good gardener prunes, cuts
- 1:26away even healthy branches so the best blooms get the
- 1:29resources they need. Cloud writes.
- 1:32Quote getting to the next level always requires ending
- 1:35something, leaving it behind and moving on.
- 1:37In quote, pruning isn't punishment.
- 1:40Pruning isn't failure. Pruning is strategic.
- 1:43It's forward-looking. Is Doctor Terry disappointed?
- 1:47I'm sure some part of her is. Another finish would have been
- 1:50nice, but she's already finished that race.
- 1:52Putting yourself on the starting line again at 77 and uncovering
- 1:56160 miles is remarkable all by itself.
- 1:59There was nothing left to prove, only something to protect.
- 2:03So she made the call the wise Gardner makes.
- 2:06Some things in your life need that same call.
- 2:09Not because they're bad, Maybe because they're only good, and
- 2:12good is taking resources from the best.
- 2:15Maybe because they're not getting well no matter what you
- 2:18invest. Maybe because they're already
- 2:20over and you haven't said so out loud.
- 2:23The good cannot begin until the bad ends.
- 2:26Sometimes the best cannot begin until the good ends.
- 2:30The better story to tell yourself is Everything always
- 2:33works out for me, even the endings.
