- 0:03Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to the Pulp Blotter Book Club on 22 Panels. I am joined again by Chicago actor Sean Harklrode and Chicago actor and playwright of the… the Four Color…
- 0:19Tad Eggleston: series of plays. Mr. Mark Pratt.
- 0:23Tad Eggleston: I notice they have it as 4-color series now, rather than four-color trilogy in your… your, ….
- 0:30Mark Pracht: Poor color plays, yeah.
- 0:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 0:33Mark Pracht: Because it's looking more and more, likely that there's going to be another one, so….
- 0:37Tad Eggleston: Another one.
- 0:38Mark Pracht: We will see when and if that shows up, but ….
- 0:42Tad Eggleston: What's going on with the music one that you were doing in between, though?
- 0:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, … Has that landed somewhere?
- 0:48Mark Pracht: It hasn't landed anywhere. I'm, I'm, I'm still working on that. I have a, the…
- 0:56Mark Pracht: Not to get off subject, what else do we do here? But, ….
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: Fucking stuff is on subject, Mark.
- 1:05Mark Pracht: We have made some headway in a Western adaptation that I've been working on.
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: Oh, cool.
- 1:13Mark Pracht: I… Because we are still communicating with the rights holders.
- 1:18Mark Pracht: About getting the rights to do it. I can't really say what it is, or when it will happen, but the idea is that it would be, not in this coming season at City Loop theater, but in the following season, so… Cool, cool. As long as we can clear the rights, which is up in the air at the moment.
- 1:37Mark Pracht: Headway has been made, but …
- 1:40Mark Pracht: Don't wanna… I don't wanna jinx it.
- 1:43Tad Eggleston: Have we done a Western yet on the Pulp Lotter?
- 1:46Mark Pracht: We did, ….
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: Well, we did Pulp, which is kind of a Western.
- 1:50Mark Pracht: Alright, everyone.
- 1:51Tad Eggleston: Prime story, yeah.
- 1:52Mark Pracht: Yeah. I mean, you know, we could do, you know…
- 1:56Mark Pracht: There's any number of stuff that we could do. There are. There are.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: There are. That just popped into my head as you said, Western.
- 2:02Mark Pracht: I mean, I'm a… I'm a, …
- 2:06Mark Pracht: Massive, massive fan of the, … Paul Miotti, … Jonah Heck series that was….
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 2:15Mark Pracht: In the, early 2000s, I guess. I think so.
- 2:18Tad Eggleston: Which I've only read some of, so I wouldn't mind.
- 2:20Mark Pracht: Excuse me. So, so good.
- 2:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 2:24Mark Pracht: I, like… I… I always loved it because they sort of ejected most of the really… really, …
- 2:36Mark Pracht: weird Western tale kind of thing of it. It was more of a… it was more of a straight-ahead western, you know, it was sort of like a Clint Eastwood kind of thing.
- 2:44Mark Pracht: I really love.
- 2:45Tad Eggleston: Cool.
- 2:45Mark Pracht: I thought it was really cool.
- 2:47Sean Harklerode: Can I introduce a new gentleman in a series called Gunhawks?
- 2:55Sean Harklerode: Gunhawks.
- 2:56Mark Pracht: Gunhawks has a… has a huge, history with… I was… I was there. Would… did you get the last two issues in my presence, or, ….
- 3:07Sean Harklerode: So, I could not find the last issue to save my life.
- 3:13Sean Harklerode: And I finally found it.
- 3:16Sean Harklerode: In the closet of my childhood bedroom, looking at multiple conventions.
- 3:23Mark Pracht: Tad, I don't think Tad knows what the Gunhawks are.
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: I do, because… … David and Maria Latham did a Gunhawks one-shot, with, Luca Pizari, in 2019.
- 3:43Mark Pracht: Amazing. I don't know, I didn't think you could probably do that series in a month.
- 3:48Tad Eggleston: Marvel still has the… Marvel still has the right.
- 3:51Sean Harklerode: Well, they've retconned it such that, the series as we knew it was a pulp.
- 3:59Sean Harklerode: It was, it was, like, one of those, like, Western novels.
- 4:03Sean Harklerode: And so… Sounds like it's maybe right up our alley.
- 4:11Tad Eggleston: I am checking right now to see if… how much of Gunhawks is on Marvel Unlimited, because that would… that would be what made it easiest for me.
- 4:23Tad Eggleston: And the answer is the… the 2019 issue.
- 4:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:30Tad Eggleston: Otherwise, there was a 2006 issue called Marvel Westerns.
- 4:38Tad Eggleston: That had….
- 4:39Sean Harklerode: That's the one… That establishes that it was a pulp.
- 4:45Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 4:50Sean Harklerode: But I… so I haven't read the 2019 one. The 2019 one is on… is on… Marvel, though.
- 4:57Tad Eggleston: It is on Marvel Unlimited as well.
- 4:59Sean Harklerode: How did I miss… how did I miss a gun haunts?
- 5:03Tad Eggleston: I don't know. I did not miss it, because, while I might miss a Gunhawks, I do not miss, David Lapham.
- 5:14Tad Eggleston: That's… that's just not allowed in my world.
- 5:17Tad Eggleston: You know….
- 5:19Mark Pracht: To anybody who's listening who's like, what the hell are the Gunhogs? It's basically a Western version of, of, …
- 5:26Mark Pracht: Power Man and Iron Fist, essentially, right?
- 5:29Sean Harklerode: Right. He looks just like Luke Cage, really.
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 5:35Tad Eggleston: Anyway.
- 5:37Tad Eggleston: I mean, if we wanted to do a western, another one that pops into my head that I would… I would love to do is Blueberry.
- 5:47Mark Pracht: Oh, God. Oh, Lord, yes, that stuff is amazing.
- 5:51Mark Pracht: Wow.
- 5:53Sean Harklerode: So, he was a gunfighter before he became a… Blue Ghost?
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's… that's blueberry.
- 6:03Mark Pracht: Boob.
- 6:04Sean Harklerode: Oh! Oh!
- 6:07Tad Eggleston: He's in a different comic.
- 6:09Sean Harklerode: Oh, okay.
- 6:14Mark Pracht: That would lead into a discussion of that movie version that, apparently went completely off the rails because the director was on, …
- 6:23Mark Pracht: Okay, what's that, AZT, or, …
- 6:28Mark Pracht: Oh, God, what's that, like, performance-enhancing shit that everybody, all the, all the… big necks.
- 6:35Mark Pracht: want to use.
- 6:36Mark Pracht: I think, yeah. Human growth hormone?
- 6:38Sean Harklerode: I think, Rogan's in.
- 6:40Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 6:42Sean Harklerode: or H, human growth hormone.
- 6:44Mark Pracht: Whatever it is, I don't know. I… I don't know. But apparently, the director was on this stuff the whole time, and like…
- 6:51Mark Pracht: The entire production spun out of control.
- 6:54Mark Pracht: I was reading a story about it, but it's blueberry, and it's based on the French.
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, I know the movie you're talking about.
- 7:02Mark Pracht: I do… Actually….
- 7:05Tad Eggleston: Trippy and kinda cool.
- 7:08Tad Eggleston: God, what's it called? I watched it recently.
- 7:12Mark Pracht: I mean, it was… it was called Blueberry, and then they changed the title.
- 7:15Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 7:15Mark Pracht: Thank you.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: Okay, they changed the title, yeah.
- 7:18Mark Pracht: I think so. But anyway, …
- 7:22Mark Pracht: Yeah, man, I… to tell you the absolute truth, I… I have seen… I have seen the art from Blueberry, but I have never…
- 7:29Mark Pracht: Reddit, so….
- 7:31Tad Eggleston: Renegade.
- 7:32Mark Pracht: Seriously.
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: That's what they called it.
- 7:34Mark Pracht: Right, right, right, right, that's what it was.
- 7:36Tad Eggleston: 2004.
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: A French Acid Western.
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: Hard about….
- 7:44Sean Harklerode: French Western is making me think of deerskin. Guys saying….
- 7:50Mark Pracht: They haven't.
- 7:52Mark Pracht: What was that one thing with the, it was, like, … French….
- 7:59Sean Harklerode: Oh, damn.
- 8:00Mark Pracht: Yeah, no, it was, … God, what was it? It was… I can't remember it now, but it was, like, …
- 8:08Mark Pracht: it was a French film, and it was this…
- 8:11Mark Pracht: Martial arts guy, and they, like, fought werewolves or something.
- 8:16Mark Pracht: I don't know, it was crazy. I'll think of it someday.
- 8:20Sean Harklerode: I'm listening.
- 8:23Mark Pracht: It's, Descatos, or, … Mark, …
- 8:31Mark Pracht: It's like, the brotherhood of the…
- 8:35Mark Pracht: Whatever. I'm never gonna come up with that in the next 10 minutes, so, ….
- 8:39Sean Harklerode: Now I'm wondering if there have ever been any OSS 117 comics.
- 8:50Tad Eggleston: While I look for that, let's start talking.
- 8:53Tad Eggleston: Well….
- 8:54Mark Pracht: I, I have one.
- 8:55Tad Eggleston: Something to say. Some, ….
- 8:58Mark Pracht: I have one thing… I have one thing to say about this Shadow series compared to, the last Shadow graphic novel that we talked about.
- 9:08Mark Pracht: Which was by… Basically the same creative team.
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 9:14Mark Pracht: That's more… this is more like it.
- 9:17Sean Harklerode: Absolutely.
- 9:19Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 9:19Sean Harklerode: I love, I mean… this art… Kaluta…
- 9:25Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 9:26Sean Harklerode: is just amazing, and Bernie filled in on one, and.
- 9:30Mark Pracht: Yeah. Frank Robbins? Frank Robbins. I, I know, I know that Frank Robbins is a very divisive artist, but I love Frank Robbins. I, it, it, it's almost, ….
- 9:42Sean Harklerode: figures.
- 9:44Mark Pracht: Yeah, I mean, like, yeah, Invaders… I mean, like, Frank Robbins almost feels kind of, …
- 9:51Mark Pracht: Kirby-esque to me, in that he has his style, and he just runs it right to the wall, and…
- 9:59Mark Pracht: It's just… it's… it's… it's awesome. I love Frank Robbins, I love his issues, but I mean, you know, the Kaluta stuff is…
- 10:08Mark Pracht: And I did find myself wondering, since, you know, the version… the digital version that I think we were all looking at looks like it's scanned right out of the books.
- 10:18Mark Pracht: And I just wonder if it's, like, the newsprint sopping up the art.
- 10:23Mark Pracht: Gives it sort of that….
- 10:24Tad Eggleston: It does feel like it is.
- 10:26Mark Pracht: Yeah, it's, it, it feels very… Pulp.
- 10:31Mark Pracht: I mean, for, like.
- 10:32Tad Eggleston: You can occasionally kind of see the page behind it.
- 10:36Mark Pracht: I heard it, yeah.
- 10:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:39Mark Pracht: But, I mean, it was… but it also, just in terms of… and, like, and I hate to just keep comparing it to the other one, but that… the, the… the devils, or the Hitler's, …
- 10:50Mark Pracht: what was it? Hitler's, ….
- 10:53Sean Harklerode: Hitler Astrologyard? Or Astra.
- 10:55Tad Eggleston: Astrologer.
- 10:55Mark Pracht: Collager, yeah. Like, everything was so clean, and it just… and it didn't… there weren't deep, inky blacks, and man, like, just right off the bat with this first issue, it's like…
- 11:10Mark Pracht: just sopping in blacks, and I love.
- 11:13Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 11:14Mark Pracht: I love it. I mean, like, I'm really glad that we decided to read these, because I'd always heard about these books.
- 11:22Mark Pracht: I'd never gotten a chance to read them, and I just… I fell in love with it. I think, Denny is a great writer for this.
- 11:32Mark Pracht: The.
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: I think… I think it works really well episodically, too. I mean, I think that there… I think that there were 8 that were, like, fantastic, 2 that were good, and 2 that…
- 11:45Tad Eggleston: they weren't bad, right? There weren't any bad ones.
- 11:49Mark Pracht: Well, I mean, that's sort of like… that's sort of the nature of the whole pulp experience, you know? You would get a new story every month, and it…
- 11:58Mark Pracht: God knows that all of those writers who were working on the pulp novels were being paid by the word, so….
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: I mean, it kind of felt like the first time, …
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: was it Robbins? Stepped in for Kaluta? …
- 12:12Tad Eggleston: he had the same, or incredibly similar script to the one that… because they said at the back that the reason Robbins has stepped in was Kaluto was taking his time to really knock the… Right. And then the next issue…
- 12:25Tad Eggleston: had the same guy getting poisoned and whatnot, and I'm like, so Denny just, like, took the same script and…
- 12:34Tad Eggleston: Move some stuff a little.
- 12:39Tad Eggleston: But it worked. It was fun.
- 12:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's.
- 12:43Mark Pracht: Well, I mean, and you know, like, look, that's it, that's deeply in the spirit of these things, because….
- 12:49Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 12:50Mark Pracht: ….
- 12:51Tad Eggleston: One time… Ninja, and one time he was the mummy, but it.
- 12:55Sean Harklerode: Yeah, I was saying….
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: Well….
- 12:57Sean Harklerode: Maybe this is what you were gonna say, Mark, so….
- 13:01Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 13:01Sean Harklerode: I would say… when I was…
- 13:05Sean Harklerode: when I was reading more than one at a sitting, It wasn't great.
- 13:11Sean Harklerode: Because it is such a formula.
- 13:14Sean Harklerode: that, you know, it… I… that wasn't a great experience. But reading them, you know, like, one a day, or whatever, which I typically did, I've read a few, and once you realize that it's going to be exactly… I mean, because it's like an episode of the show.
- 13:31Sean Harklerode: And… or the radio show.
- 13:33Sean Harklerode: Yeah. And, ….
- 13:35Mark Pracht: Or one of the….
- 13:36Sean Harklerode: The only drawback, it was very formulaic, but they played around with it a lot, especially towards the middle of the run that I really enjoyed.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: Well, Go ahead, Mark.
- 13:48Mark Pracht: No, no, go ahead.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: I was gonna say, it also reminded me of what… Denny…
- 13:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, don't get me wrong, Denny writes just great stories where Denny's the star. He does plenty of that. But what he's also great at
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: is like, oh, we need somebody to write this, and we've got an artist that can hold their shit together, I'm gonna give them room to play. And I think he gives them more than, like, the stand, hey….
- 14:18Mark Pracht: Let's do the thing this week. Right.
- 14:21Tad Eggleston: But… but, like, it's like, my favorite Daredevil comics, I was just writing about them for… for American Nature Presents, are the O'Neill…
- 14:31Tad Eggleston: Mazzicelli books.
- 14:35Sean Harklerode: Oh.
- 14:35Tad Eggleston: As good as… as good as Born Again is, and I love Born Again, it's like…
- 14:42Tad Eggleston: because Miller had more of a vision.
- 14:46Tad Eggleston: It's this great story, and, you know, it's probably the best arc.
- 14:51Tad Eggleston: But most of the O'Neill Mazzicellis are one-shots, or part of a loose arc, or whatever, and it's like…
- 14:58Tad Eggleston: O'Neill gave him enough that he knew what the assignment was, but David got to play.
- 15:06Tad Eggleston: And man, did he play. And I felt like there was some of that going on.
- 15:11Tad Eggleston: With this, is that it's like….
- 15:14Mark Pracht: Well, I mean.
- 15:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, like….
- 15:15Mark Pracht: If you're, like, if… If you have an artist that can really do atmospheric, Right?
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:25Mark Pracht: then you're… you're 50% of the way there with the shadow. I mean, really. Like, I'm jumping ahead to issue 5 here, which is the first Frank Robbins one.
- 15:35Mark Pracht: … And… like… It's… it's so good. I mean, like, he's got this whole thing with the… the… …
- 15:48Mark Pracht: The… the mist coming across, and the shadows coming out of it, and…
- 15:52Mark Pracht: I… it's just… like, the thing is, is, like.
- 15:57Mark Pracht: it is formula. I mean, like, all of these, all of these characters are formula, right? It's always the same setup, it's always the same resolution, it's always the same thing.
- 16:09Mark Pracht: Like, that's… that's part of…
- 16:13Mark Pracht: I think that that's part of the… the pulp Fiction…
- 16:18Mark Pracht: And again, I mean… what I mean is, like, characters like this that came directly out of those pulp novels, you know?
- 16:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 16:26Mark Pracht: Pulp Periodicals, is that it was always, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So….
- 16:33Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 16:34Mark Pracht: And you're basically just looking for… …
- 16:39Mark Pracht: new and interesting ways for the shadow to give somebody their comeuppance, you know?
- 16:46Tad Eggleston: Sounds about right.
- 16:48Sean Harklerode: Thank you.
- 16:51Mark Pracht: I mean, and the other thing is, you know, you have here like… the shadow…
- 17:00Mark Pracht: By the very nature of the character, is pretty much unknowable.
- 17:05Mark Pracht: Right?
- 17:06Mark Pracht: There is no… There's a character, but the character is so swathed in…
- 17:14Mark Pracht: no one knows who I am.
- 17:17Mark Pracht: That there's no, like… anybody who tries to do, like, a backstory of the Shadow, it's like…
- 17:24Mark Pracht: The movie they made in the 90s, …
- 17:28Mark Pracht: Which, in a lot of ways, I loved, right? It's another one of those exam… a lot of those comic book-based movies in the 90s have, like, these very early sequences.
- 17:39Mark Pracht: Like, the first 15 minutes or whatever, where you're like, wow, this is perfect!
- 17:43Mark Pracht: And then they decide they have to complicate things, right?
- 17:48Mark Pracht: And… the thing is, with the shadow, it's not even… it's not really complicated. It's like he's…
- 17:54Mark Pracht: He has no wife.
- 17:56Mark Pracht: It's like Batman to the 100th degree, you know?
- 18:00Mark Pracht: I even love… there's that one issue in here where, Margot Lang sort of suggests that Lamont Cranston is the shadow, and the shadow's like, no.
- 18:12Mark Pracht: Lamont is somewhere else doing something, and you're like.
- 18:16Mark Pracht: Jeez, is that true or not? Because, you know…
- 18:20Mark Pracht: the sort of basic thinking at this point is that Lamont Cranston is the shadow.
- 18:26Sean Harklerode: Right. Is he just lying to Margo?
- 18:29Mark Pracht: You know?
- 18:30Mark Pracht: Or….
- 18:31Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I don't know… I don't know what's considered shadow canon and what's not.
- 18:38Tad Eggleston: … But….
- 18:42Sean Harklerode: Hey, man.
- 18:45Sean Harklerode: I think… that the shadow is Lamont Kranz.
- 18:54Mark Pracht: But my credits, dude!
- 18:56Sean Harklerode: is not.
- 18:57Mark Pracht: Not the shit.
- 18:58Sean Harklerode: the shadow.
- 19:03Tad Eggleston: So, what I was gonna say is that, ….
- 19:07Mark Pracht: That has made me happier than anything.
- 19:10Tad Eggleston: both.
- 19:11Tad Eggleston: …
- 19:16Tad Eggleston: both Matt Wagner and the Shadow Year One.
- 19:20Tad Eggleston: and Andrew Helfer in his series with Bill Sienkiewicz.
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: Which is kind of a Shadow Returns-type thing.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: …
- 19:33Tad Eggleston: kind of posit that he is and he isn't. There's a real Lamont Cranston that he assumed the identity of.
- 19:41Mark Pracht: Right. ….
- 19:43Tad Eggleston: So, who exactly he is?
- 19:50Tad Eggleston: Isn't dealt with as much, but, but, like….
- 19:55Mark Pracht: It's… it's almost irrelevant, right? Like, in a way, in a way, the shadow is… Like, even more than…
- 20:04Mark Pracht: And obviously, you know, in the 30s and the 20s, there was a billion rip-off characters, right? There was the spider, there was the…
- 20:11Mark Pracht: the… Spectre, there was the blah blah blah, whatever, you know, and they were all just like…
- 20:17Mark Pracht: Just like with comic books, like, the second there was a huge hit, they were gonna, like, rip it off a hundred times.
- 20:24Mark Pracht: But, like… you take the other character… the other, like, big Pulp Fiction characters. I mean, and really.
- 20:34Mark Pracht: when it comes to, like, classic, classic pulp magazine fiction characters, you really only have the big two. You've got the Shadow, and you've got Doc Savage. And Doc Savage… Doc Savage is nothing but backstory, right?
- 20:49Mark Pracht: He's like, you know, he's this child that's right… his father… his scientific father is… scientist's father raises him to be the perfect human being, the perfect example of humanity, and… and, …
- 21:02Mark Pracht: And, you know, he has this team of helpers that are all, you know, and it's all tied in to who his father was, and… and the shadow is just…
- 21:12Mark Pracht: The shadow.
- 21:13Mark Pracht: He arrives, he kills a bunch of people.
- 21:17Mark Pracht: He dispenses justice, and then he disappears.
- 21:19Tad Eggleston: Or doesn't. In this version, he didn't do a lot of killing. He did a lot of shooting guns out of hands.
- 21:25Mark Pracht: Sure, but I mean… but at the same time, like, a lot of those guys…
- 21:29Mark Pracht: You know, and this is probably the sensitivity of the comics at the time, it's a lot of….
- 21:35Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 21:36Mark Pracht: I'm not… I'm not gonna kill you, but I don't have to save you, you know?
- 21:40Tad Eggleston: Right, right, right. No, I was just… I was mostly…
- 21:45Tad Eggleston: like, mocking that, because….
- 21:49Mark Pracht: Sure.
- 21:51Tad Eggleston: You know, … It was almost funny, sometimes, when he wasn't killing people with his… Guns?
- 22:02Sean Harklerode: Right.
- 22:03Mark Pracht: Silver-plated 45s.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 22:08Tad Eggleston: So….
- 22:09Mark Pracht: But, yeah, no, I… I….
- 22:12Sean Harklerode: He only kills, but he has to.
- 22:16Mark Pracht: Okay, Frank Castle.
- 22:17Sean Harklerode: No, I mean, he says.
- 22:19Tad Eggleston: No, I mean, he kills whenever he feels like it.
- 22:22Sean Harklerode: Well, but there's… he lets this one guy live, I can't remember which episode it is, which issue it's in.
- 22:28Mark Pracht: And, the guy's like, you're letting… like, guy's surprised, like, you're letting me live? And he's like, I only kill when I have to. Yeah.
- 22:35Sean Harklerode: I'm like, wow!
- 22:37Sean Harklerode: Our definitions of have to are different.
- 22:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 22:41Mark Pracht: I only kill when I have to.
- 22:45Sean Harklerode: But, I mean, for 1973, 1974.
- 22:49Mark Pracht: Right.
- 22:50Sean Harklerode: This was surprising.
- 22:53Sean Harklerode: Yeah. Just blowing people away. The guy who gets blown away in the, electric chair?
- 23:01Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 23:02Sean Harklerode: That was… A lot.
- 23:05Mark Pracht: Well, there's… there's a definite EC vibe that comes through a lot of this stuff, yeah.
- 23:11Sean Harklerode: I really felt, particularly with… with Kaluta, and also a bit with Frank Robbins, I think he may have been working kind of in that style. There were… there was a lot of Jack Davis, I felt.
- 23:22Mark Pracht: Oh, yeah.
- 23:23Sean Harklerode: in, in, in this.
- 23:25Mark Pracht: I mean, I would actually even say that I think that the Frank Robbins-drawn issues of this run
- 23:30Mark Pracht: are cooler to me than the colluded drum ones.
- 23:35Mark Pracht: I like that stylized thing.
- 23:38Mark Pracht: Especially in this milieu.
- 23:40Mark Pracht: … I, I…
- 23:46Mark Pracht: I have to admit, like, there's the one issue, number 11, where, the Shadow fights the Avenger.
- 23:54Mark Pracht: and Justice Incorporated, and I know that that… I know that's a… that's a classic pulp character as well, but I'm not as familiar with him.
- 24:04Mark Pracht: I think I picked up one or two of the more modern books that DC did, Justice Inc.
- 24:10Mark Pracht: … when he grabbed him and his face was malleable, I was like, whoa, what's that?
- 24:18Mark Pracht: I don't know, I had so much fun reading these, and to what Sean said, I would read these when I was at the gym.
- 24:26Mark Pracht: So, I would get on the… the… the elliptical or whatever, and I would just read… I would read one issue every day that I was at the gym, and then I would just put it away, and I would go on to something else. And I think that that really is the best way to do it, and I… I think that that's the best way, like, no matter what shadow…
- 24:48Mark Pracht: If you're talking about really classic shadow and not sort of revisionist shadow or whatever, …
- 24:55Mark Pracht: I think that's the best way to do it. Like, those… when the magazines came out, it was a month between each story, so… you know, you had a lot of time to…
- 25:06Mark Pracht: Kinda… let that sink in before another one came, you know?
- 25:17Tad Eggleston: Makes sense to me.
- 25:19Tad Eggleston: I, I, well, no.
- 25:21Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry. I said it makes sense to me.
- 25:25Mark Pracht: I'm sorry.
- 25:26Mark Pracht: I was talking about before you spoke, Tad, it's fine.
- 25:29Sean Harklerode: I felt like, I think around the fifth or sixth issue, they really started… …
- 25:37Sean Harklerode: having fun with it. Yeah. Like, you went to… there's the Katherine Hepburn ….
- 25:44Mark Pracht: Oh, yes.
- 25:46Mark Pracht: Right? Yeah. Who….
- 25:48Sean Harklerode: She looks like Katharine Hepburn. She's in the Pittsburgh story.
- 25:52Mark Pracht: Yep.
- 25:53Sean Harklerode: …
- 25:55Sean Harklerode: It's a Quasimodo, as well. Yeah. You know, that and the mummy, I really enjoyed those, because it was like…
- 26:05Sean Harklerode: it really felt like 1973, 1974, and Denny is like, let's do a Quasimodo!
- 26:14Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 26:14Sean Harklerode: Who is Quasimodo saving? Oh… Catherine Hepburn.
- 26:21Mark Pracht: You old code.
- 26:22Sean Harklerode: Oh!
- 26:24Mark Pracht: That poor soul. Actually… the, ….
- 26:29Sean Harklerode: want me to cry for him, and I won't.
- 26:32Mark Pracht: I… I actually love the mummy story, where they're in the South American pyramid, and I was like, why the hell is there a mummy in a South American pyramid? And then somebody actually said that. They were like, normally these are
- 26:46Mark Pracht: And then that whole idea of where, like, Margot Lane is trying to figure out which one of the men is of the shadow.
- 26:53Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 26:54Sean Harklerode: I just….
- 26:55Mark Pracht: I… I… it was… it was so much fun. I really… I just loved the hell out of this. It was… it was great. It… it actually, you know, it's like, as time has gone by.
- 27:06Mark Pracht: I've gotten so much more… enamored with…
- 27:12Mark Pracht: your Bronze Age books, you know, the 70s stuff, the… … I just love rereading Bob Haney's
- 27:21Mark Pracht: Brave and bold stuff. I just… and it's… It feels like…
- 27:29Mark Pracht: I love this era of comics because it feels like… There's some intention and, …
- 27:38Mark Pracht: Effort being put into the narratives, but it doesn't feel trapped in some sort of…
- 27:45Mark Pracht: Need to connect with everything else, you know?
- 27:50Mark Pracht: Does that make sense?
- 27:53Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 27:54Mark Pracht: I mean, and obviously we're talking about something that exists outside of, like, a DC universe, but …
- 28:00Mark Pracht: you know, like…
- 28:02Mark Pracht: And part of this is the nature of the material we're talking about, and the IP we're talking about, is that, you know, no, it doesn't connect.
- 28:11Mark Pracht: Like, there isn't… There's, what is it, in issue… what is it, 5 with the, …
- 28:18Mark Pracht: the general that's trying to endear himself to Nazi Germany, or whatever it is, and….
- 28:23Sean Harklerode: General Sodom.
- 28:26Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 28:28Tad Eggleston: Diff.
- 28:29Tad Eggleston: That one.
- 28:33Mark Pracht: when he returned… like, in the… I loved in the letter pages where they were like… somebody was like, oh, how could you kill General Sodom? He seemed like he could have been a great recurring villain. And they were like, who knows, maybe he isn't dead. And I'm like, oh, he's gonna come back with the Colonel Gamora!
- 28:55Sean Harklerode: Well, I mean, yeah, I mean…
- 28:57Sean Harklerode: he's got that awful line of, like, oh, don't kill Margo, she may be amusing to me later. Yeah, right.
- 29:05Tad Eggleston: Take her to my bedroom.
- 29:07Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 29:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:15Mark Pracht: Oh, this is interesting. This is, the letter page. I just was flipping around, and the letter page in Issue 8…
- 29:23Mark Pracht: … Dear editor, in your recent
- 29:29Mark Pracht: Tarzan Giant Collector's Edition, you stated that the shadow was Kent Allard, alias Lamont Cranston. In your comic, you said that the shadow poses as Lamont Cranston, but that is not his real name. Please give his real name, and PLEASE give us an origin. Thanks.
- 29:48Mark Pracht: David… Sarah Tagg, Iowa City.
- 29:52Mark Pracht: The story in this issue establishes once and for all that Cranston and the Shadow are NOT, all caps, the same person. As to who the Shadow really is.
- 30:03Mark Pracht: Well, we would need an origin tale to establish that, wouldn't we? David wants one, but our next correspondent, Ray Endelberg, feels differently.
- 30:14Mark Pracht: And Ray Endelberg has a very long letter that I won't read the other, but he's like.
- 30:21Mark Pracht: And, let the origin of your title character remain something only the shadow knows.
- 30:28Mark Pracht: I agree with, … I agree with Ray.
- 30:31Sean Harklerode: Once again, Ray ruins it for everyone.
- 30:34Mark Pracht: Oh, no, no.
- 30:35Mark Pracht: I think Ray's right. Ray says, no, no origin. I think that's better.
- 30:41Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 30:42Sean Harklerode: I agree.
- 30:44Sean Harklerode: It's, it's, it's a good mystery.
- 30:48Mark Pracht: Well, and the thing is, is like.
- 30:52Mark Pracht: What, what is really lovely about this character…
- 30:56Mark Pracht: and that I think Denny and the artists get really well, is the malevolence of it.
- 31:01Mark Pracht: You know? Like, it feels like this is somebody…
- 31:06Mark Pracht: Who, despite the fact that he is always seeking judgment, or justice, …
- 31:13Mark Pracht: It feels like someone who is touched by evil.
- 31:17Mark Pracht: Right?
- 31:18Mark Pracht: He feels like a malevolent force, right?
- 31:21Sean Harklerode: Right.
- 31:22Mark Pracht: And, … I think that just seeps out of these books.
- 31:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:30Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 31:31Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean… I think the shadow in… Many ways is both,
- 31:42Tad Eggleston: precursor and influenced by Batman, you know, because I think it originated in pulps before Batman occurred, but then Batman got as or more popular, and you see a lot of bleeding in between them.
- 31:58Tad Eggleston: And if anything, the shadow falls.
- 32:01Tad Eggleston: on, like, the opposite side of the coin, where it's like, Batman, you feel, is ultimately good, no matter how brutal he gets. The shadow, you're like…
- 32:14Tad Eggleston: They think he's good?
- 32:17Mark Pracht: Well, I mean, and we, we know….
- 32:18Sean Harklerode: laugh.
- 32:19Mark Pracht: We know for a fact that, you know, Bill Finger…
- 32:24Mark Pracht: plagiarized the shadow story for, the case of the Chemical Syndicate, the very first Batman story. I mean, and…
- 32:33Mark Pracht: the very early Batman books, you know.
- 32:36Mark Pracht: he had Batman pulling out a gun and blasting people, just like the Shadow. And I think that…
- 32:45Mark Pracht: You know, and there are moments in these books where I'm like, oh, okay, that's a… that's a Batman bit that Danny…
- 32:52Mark Pracht: Denny, just recycled.
- 32:55Mark Pracht: You know? Like, there's some moments of, like…
- 32:59Mark Pracht: What was the one issue where they're on the tightrope, or they're on the cable, and…
- 33:04Mark Pracht: It's Issue 9, where they're….
- 33:07Tad Eggleston: Over the falls.
- 33:08Mark Pracht: the fall.
- 33:09Tad Eggleston: and….
- 33:10Mark Pracht: And you're like, I mean, like… I certainly think that
- 33:16Mark Pracht: I certainly feel like the Shadow is a…
- 33:20Mark Pracht: physically intimidating and dominating character. I never thought of him as a particularly
- 33:27Mark Pracht: acrobatic or agile one, you know? He feels kind of like a sledgehammer, you know?
- 33:34Sean Harklerode: Oh my god.
- 33:37Tad Eggleston: Actually, that's.
- 33:38Sean Harklerode: Was that a sledgehammer reference to the TV show?
- 33:42Mark Pracht: Well, I mean, you can take it any way you want.
- 33:47Sean Harklerode: Thinking of the shadow as Sledgehammer, I'm gonna be thinking about that one, for a while.
- 33:55Tad Eggleston: So, so that just took me in a different tangential direction, though.
- 34:01Tad Eggleston: like, the different shadows I've read, and even a little bit in these 12 issues, …
- 34:11Tad Eggleston: Are kind of inconsistent, or… Inconsistent isn't even the right word. It's more… …
- 34:23Tad Eggleston: You have the mystery of his origin, but you also have the mystery of… What's science and what's mystical?
- 34:31Mark Pracht: Oh, of course, yeah.
- 34:32Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 34:34Mark Pracht: Well, I mean, I think also, you know, and this is sort of taken from the pulp novels, and I loved how…
- 34:42Mark Pracht: Denny incorporated it into every splash page, I certify the events related herein to be true, the shadow.
- 34:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 34:49Mark Pracht: like… Yeah, okay, do we know? I don't know. What is this? What is this? Is that a folktale?
- 34:57Mark Pracht: You know, and, and … we… we already know, we know the Shadow is a, …
- 35:09Mark Pracht: Unreliable narrator, right?
- 35:13Mark Pracht: Because he… he's got a million different…
- 35:15Mark Pracht: disguises and personalities that he can use. So, how do we know this story, you know?
- 35:23Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 35:25Mark Pracht: Anyway.
- 35:28Mark Pracht: And I, I… go ahead.
- 35:30Sean Harklerode: Oh, I just wanted to point out before we got too far afield, we were talking about Issue 11,
- 35:36Sean Harklerode: … the Avenger and Justice Incorporated. There is a shout-out in there to Detective Comics, number one.
- 35:46Sean Harklerode: One of the, … and it is a yellow peril. I mean, there are two yellow peril, issues in this, in this run.
- 35:57Sean Harklerode: But, he is reading Detective Comics No. 1, which is the Fu Manchu, cover drawn by Vin Sullivan.
- 36:08Mark Pracht: Right?
- 36:10Mark Pracht: Gee, who played Vin Sullivan in the….
- 36:12Sean Harklerode: I don't know, I… I heard he was really good.
- 36:16Mark Pracht: Yeah, he was. He was fantastic.
- 36:19Tad Eggleston: I, I thought it was Bill Gaines?
- 36:22Sean Harklerode: Oh, that guy was great.
- 36:25Mark Pracht: That's a weird guy.
- 36:26Sean Harklerode: He's a weird guy.
- 36:28Mark Pracht: Look at us!
- 36:29Mark Pracht: I've thrown out jokes for the 8 people in the audience who may have seen my plays.
- 36:33Sean Harklerode: Right.
- 36:35Mark Pracht: Who, who knew that.
- 36:37Tad Eggleston: Available for purchase now.
- 36:38Sean Harklerode: Carmine Infantino and Bill Dean had so much in common.
- 36:43Mark Pracht: and Carmine Infantino.
- 36:47Mark Pracht: Honestly, you know what? Actually, I would, like…
- 36:51Mark Pracht: I would have loved to have seen Carmine do one of these. I mean, like, Carmine has this very style… especially once he got into the 70s and 80s, you know?
- 36:59Mark Pracht: He had that super stylized kind of style.
- 37:03Mark Pracht: But it might have been interesting to see. It's probably a little too clean. It's sort of like the idea, like, the idea of, … because we had talked about this, we talked about this in, the last, Fourth World book club we did.
- 37:16Mark Pracht: How, you know, that monster story in there
- 37:20Mark Pracht: felt a little outside of the Kirby… style, you know?
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 37:26Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 37:27Mark Pracht: like… I don't know.
- 37:30Mark Pracht: Something about those sharp edges that Carmine always drew in the later years.
- 37:35Mark Pracht: Because in a way, you know… sorry, I'm getting off-topic now, but I always think about, like.
- 37:42Mark Pracht: when I think of Star Wars comic books.
- 37:47Mark Pracht: I think of Carmine Infantino's art.
- 37:52Mark Pracht: Cause, you know, cause he took over… it was….
- 37:57Tad Eggleston: I know at least one person who will be happy for you to say that, because he likes to be associated with them as little as possible.
- 38:06Sean Harklerode: Oh, Howard Shaken?
- 38:09Tad Eggleston: I wasn't even gonna say his name, I didn't wanna… Howard, if you're listening, that wasn't me.
- 38:15Mark Pracht: Well, I thought Howard did a fine job, but it was clear, as he has said in numerous occasions, it was a rushed job, and it looks like there are many elements… there are many points during the original film adaptation, and that Han Solo Magnificent Seven rip-off arc.
- 38:35Mark Pracht: after, which I believe he technically is credited as the penciler on… that I felt were, … Clearly.
- 38:45Mark Pracht: … ghosted in some level.
- 38:48Mark Pracht: So….
- 38:49Sean Harklerode: Look, I just have to say that Jackson T. Tuparanki and … Sergio… Sergio X Aragantes.
- 38:58Sean Harklerode: We'll live forever.
- 39:01Mark Pracht: Ugh.
- 39:02Mark Pracht: Don't, don't, … oh my god, …
- 39:08Mark Pracht: Don't, don't, don't forget Don Juan Quixote.
- 39:16Mark Pracht: Oh, Roy Thomas, God bless you.
- 39:22Mark Pracht: But I think it was after that arc, That story with the… the…
- 39:28Mark Pracht: that Carmine took over that book.
- 39:32Mark Pracht: And there's something… I just remember, like, all of the, like, whenever the costumes would flare out, it would be this perfect point.
- 39:41Mark Pracht: And the way he drew the guns firing, it was like lines came out, then it would open up a little bit, and then the lines would continue. And I… there's something about that, that every time I think about Star Wars comic books, I think that's what a Star Wars comic book should look like.
- 39:56Mark Pracht: Anyway… This….
- 39:59Tad Eggleston: Fair.
- 40:00Mark Pracht: These… what is it, 12 issues I think we have here?
- 40:03Tad Eggleston: 12 issues.
- 40:03Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 40:04Mark Pracht: … … These are what, to me, a shadow comic book should look like.
- 40:13Sean Harklerode: Yes.
- 40:14Mark Pracht: And I believe I said.
- 40:17Sean Harklerode: last month.
- 40:19Sean Harklerode: Those comics didn't feel like the shadow to me.
- 40:22Mark Pracht: No.
- 40:23Sean Harklerode: They're much too bright.
- 40:25Sean Harklerode: This was… this was… the atmosphere was correct, and… and everything.
- 40:29Mark Pracht: Yeah, no, like, this cover on issue… Issue 12.
- 40:36Mark Pracht: Fucking love it.
- 40:38Mark Pracht: I don't even know who that artist is.
- 40:39Tad Eggleston: The numbers were really nice.
- 40:42Sean Harklerode: I mean, even had a, … a Cubert.
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: Copper. Yeah.
- 40:47Mark Pracht: Yep.
- 40:49Mark Pracht: Yep.
- 40:50Mark Pracht: There is one… there is one panel in one of these books. I just saw it, and I'm gonna go find it.
- 40:56Mark Pracht: that I have seen used over and over and over again in terms of a…
- 41:06Mark Pracht: evocative image of the shadow. Let me see if I can find it.
- 41:14Mark Pracht: Also, what I loved about these scans was that we got some of the ads.
- 41:18Sean Harklerode: Yeah.
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: I could have left them all in. I was trying to make the, the… The overall thing's smaller.
- 41:29Mark Pracht: So I'd meant to cut them all, but I missed a few.
- 41:32Mark Pracht: It's okay, I love seeing him.
- 41:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:34Mark Pracht: It's good memories.
- 41:36Mark Pracht: Where is it? Where is it?
- 41:37Sean Harklerode: Well, you know, you mentioned that cupper for number 12. I mean, that's a very, you know, moody…
- 41:44Sean Harklerode: Issue, too.
- 41:46Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 41:47Sean Harklerode: you know, It's almost like the, the hate monger from FF here.
- 41:52Mark Pracht: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:53Sean Harklerode: ….
- 41:56Mark Pracht: Well, yeah, that's the Satan-worshipping one, right?
- 41:58Sean Harklerode: Yes, yeah.
- 41:59Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 41:59Sean Harklerode: They're worshiping Beelzebubim.
- 42:01Mark Pracht: Yeah. Oh, there it is. It is… Issue 3?
- 42:07Mark Pracht: Page 19, upper right-hand corner.
- 42:12Mark Pracht: It's the shadow… with a… he's got a Tommy gun, and he's looking at the, …
- 42:19Mark Pracht: The guy in front of the burning…
- 42:24Mark Pracht: I think it's page 64 of the file, I think.
- 42:31Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 42:32Sean Harklerode: Roll.
- 42:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:33Mark Pracht: Yeah, I've… I've… I have seen that panel.
- 42:37Mark Pracht: Reused about a dozen times over.
- 42:41Tad Eggleston: That ain't, you know… Yeah, yeah.
- 42:46Tad Eggleston: That looks totally familiar.
- 42:49Mark Pracht: Yep.
- 42:52Tad Eggleston: I feel like I've seen it used for…
- 42:56Tad Eggleston: not just Shadow, either. I feel like I've seen it as a Punisher, I feel like I've seen it as Nick Fury.
- 43:06Mark Pracht: Oh yeah, that's the… God, that's the issue with the dude getting blasted in the… in the electric chair.
- 43:12Mark Pracht: God, you're right. Like, this is all so… like, it is… it does feel like Denny…
- 43:19Mark Pracht: Channeling. And this would have been…
- 43:27Mark Pracht: I'm guessing this would have been about the time that they loosened the Comics Code the first time?
- 43:32Mark Pracht: Or the second time, actually, I think.
- 43:35Mark Pracht: … Cuz, yeah, they're getting away with a lot here.
- 43:41Mark Pracht: For a code-approved book.
- 43:44Sean Harklerode: This is, 19….
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: It is a code print.
- 43:47Sean Harklerode: of Issue 3.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: Meow.
- 43:51Sean Harklerode: what….
- 43:51Mark Pracht: Upper right… upper… upper right-hand corner, page 19.
- 43:55Tad Eggleston: Upper… upper left-hand corner.
- 43:57Mark Pracht: Upper left-hand corner, sorry.
- 43:58Sean Harklerode: with the, … Tommy Gun. Tommy Gun?
- 44:01Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 44:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 44:03Mark Pracht: I've seen that… I've seen that… that figure a dozen times over.
- 44:06Sean Harklerode: Pretty awesome.
- 44:07Tad Eggleston: Well, and this is the issue that was both Kaluta and Bernie Wrightson.
- 44:14Sean Harklerode: Right, you can feel some… oh, and page 18, I mentioned earlier, just the guy getting shot in the… Right.
- 44:22Mark Pracht: In the electric chair.
- 44:24Sean Harklerode: I… I had to look at that a couple of times, like, is that really what I'm seeing? Because this is rough. I mean, you see the bullets go through him, and….
- 44:35Mark Pracht: Through the chair, and….
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, probably what it is, is the code said you can't electrocute him, but you can kill him.
- 44:49Mark Pracht: Well, I mean… You know, famously, The code was amended… Very shortly after…
- 44:59Mark Pracht: After it was instituted, because, like, very quickly, the publishers were like, oh, hold on a minute.
- 45:05Mark Pracht: …
- 45:08Mark Pracht: But it was in the 70s that there was the amendment, and it… part of it… I think part of it was the… the Spider-Man issues with the drug…
- 45:18Mark Pracht: story.
- 45:20Mark Pracht: But that was when… that was when they started allowing… Monsters of a literary bent.
- 45:28Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:29Mark Pracht: So that's when you could start doing the Dracula comic, and you could do the Franklin, you know, and Marvel, being Marvel, immediately did Werewolf by Night, and all of those things.
- 45:39Mark Pracht: … So… But yeah, I… I kinda… I kinda wonder if this isn't…
- 45:49Mark Pracht: If this book isn't leaning a little heavily on that kind of adjustment to the code.
- 45:54Mark Pracht: Because, yeah, I just… Yeah.
- 45:58Mark Pracht: God, it's so cool.
- 46:00Sean Harklerode: Yeah, no, I'm really glad…
- 46:03Sean Harklerode: you know, because I've always enjoyed, you know, the serials, and I love the movie. In fact, there was a great
- 46:11Sean Harklerode: … Wasn't a very long article, but someone's posting, it was like, you know, after Batman 89,
- 46:18Sean Harklerode: Like, people decided, not that we needed more comic book heroes, we needed more, pulp heroes. And… and we got the, you know, the… that's… the movies we got out of that were that really stylistic Dick Tracy movie.
- 46:35Sean Harklerode: The shadow, which was also really stylistic. The…
- 46:42Sean Harklerode: Phantom, which, you know, has its moments and has some bad moments, too.
- 46:49Mark Pracht: Yeah, I know, but I think, actually, The Phantom, you could say, is a pretty accurate adaptation of that comic strip.
- 46:55Sean Harklerode: Right.
- 46:56Mark Pracht: Billy Zane is all in in that.
- 46:59Mark Pracht: And the Rocketeer comes.
- 47:01Tad Eggleston: here. Yep.
- 47:02Sean Harklerode: Soon out of that.
- 47:04Sean Harklerode: You know, not as an original, but in that….
- 47:08Mark Pracht: Yeah, absolutely, in vain.
- 47:11Mark Pracht: Yeah, it was like they thought that the, the, … the sort of…
- 47:19Mark Pracht: 30s feel that Tim Burton put into that Batman movie was what was…
- 47:24Mark Pracht: exciting to people, and it's like, I don't know. ….
- 47:28Sean Harklerode: Well, it's exciting looking back at it, you know.
- 47:31Mark Pracht: Well, I mean.
- 47:31Sean Harklerode: But not everything looks exactly the same.
- 47:35Mark Pracht: Right.
- 47:35Sean Harklerode: Like.
- 47:36Mark Pracht: 100%.
- 47:36Sean Harklerode: What I love about the… not to get off topic.
- 47:39Sean Harklerode: Which, you know, what we do, but that's what I really loved about the Fantastic Four movie.
- 47:45Mark Pracht: Yeah, 100%.
- 47:46Sean Harklerode: It was of a time, and it evoked that time.
- 47:49Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 47:50Sean Harklerode: And even though, I mean, I guess it's not in the 60s, it's just in a retro future….
- 47:56Mark Pracht: Right.
- 47:58Sean Harklerode: But… Just a movie that looks original.
- 48:02Mark Pracht: Yeah.
- 48:03Sean Harklerode: I mean, that Dick Tracy movie, I mean, everyone knows I love Dick Tracy, but… That's a gorgeous move!
- 48:11Mark Pracht: Yeah, it's 100% gorgeous.
- 48:13Tad Eggleston: I used to have that poster on my wall.
- 48:16Tad Eggleston: When I was young.
- 48:18Mark Pracht: I mean, I will tell you, like.
- 48:21Mark Pracht: it is… what we were talking about earlier is, like, I think there's a lot of those movies, …
- 48:28Mark Pracht: that… the Judge Dredd movie that came out about that same time is…
- 48:33Mark Pracht: has a shit ton of problems. Let's not… let's not sugarcoat it.
- 48:38Mark Pracht: But in terms of the environment of Mega City 1, it is 100% more accurate to the comics than the… the dread that came out in the 2000s. I mean, like, it… like, it feels like the Mega City 1. And I, you know, like.
- 48:58Mark Pracht: I always like to say.
- 49:01Mark Pracht: Specifically, when you think about those movies, like, when you think about The Phantom, you think about The Shadow, you think about Dick, …
- 49:09Mark Pracht: Think about, Judge Dredd.
- 49:12Mark Pracht: All of those movies start… with… action sequences, That are perfect.
- 49:19Mark Pracht: Right?
- 49:21Mark Pracht: … that first scene in Judge Dredd, where he comes rolling out, and he stops the… the block war.
- 49:29Mark Pracht: You know, and he just walks in the middle of the street, and the little microphone comes down, he's like, I am the law! And we can say whatever we want about Stallone. But the way that all played out, I was like, this is the fucking comic book come to life.
- 49:42Mark Pracht: And then, immediately after that, he takes off the helmet, and the whole thing goes to shit. But that's a different thing altogether. Same thing with the shadow. Like, there's the opening sequence where there's the guys, and they're having a… I don't know if it's a gun deal or whatever it is on the…
- 49:56Mark Pracht: on the bridge.
- 49:59Mark Pracht: And there's this amazing shot.
- 50:01Mark Pracht: Where you hear him laughing, and they turn around, and the cloak's, like, flowing out, and he's just laughing and standing there, you know? And… and it's… it's… it's exactly what you want from the shadow, and then it's sort of, like, they start trying to explain the character, and start trying to delve into some sort of origin, and it all kind of crumbles, right?
- 50:21Mark Pracht: Phantom, the same thing. Like, there's a great sequence where it's like the Phantom takes out some smugglers or pirates or whatever in the jungle, and you're like, that's the Phantom!
- 50:32Mark Pracht: And then it kind of just kind of, you know…
- 50:36Mark Pracht: whether, you know, whether you think the Phantom works completely, I do think the Phantom is better in any of those three. It's the best at holding on to what the tone of the comic strip is.
- 50:49Mark Pracht: whether that works in a modern context, I don't know, but….
- 50:54Sean Harklerode: Well, I'll be honest, I've never really loved the Phantom.
- 50:58Mark Pracht: But it's the Walks!
- 51:01Tad Eggleston: Apparently.
- 51:01Sean Harklerode: Very true.
- 51:03Tad Eggleston: So, I learned recently that the Phantom… It is so big in… Scandinavia?
- 51:16Mark Pracht: Huh.
- 51:17Tad Eggleston: that… They've had their own stuff for the last 50 years, that's essentially only available in English via… …
- 51:35Tad Eggleston: Australian… Publishers.
- 51:39Sean Harklerode: So now that's the kind of stuff that I'm… I'd love to read the Mark Evanier, like, Italian Tarzan comics, right?
- 51:49Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 51:49Sean Harklerode: You know, that we….
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: I don'.
- 51:51Sean Harklerode: I've got….
- 51:51Tad Eggleston: But, like, the….
- 51:52Sean Harklerode: I've got some Italian, Snow White comics from the 50s.
- 51:58Sean Harklerode: That are amazing, that we didn't get here.
- 52:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, from what I have heard, and, like, I fell down a rabbit… I, I got to do a…
- 52:13Tad Eggleston: another thing for an upcoming issue of American Nature Presents, I got to do a email interview with the Norwegian cartoonist Jason.
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: … Who is one of my favorite deadpan humor.
- 52:30Tad Eggleston: Dark humor.
- 52:32Tad Eggleston: dark, dark humor at times, cartoonists.
- 52:36Mark Pracht: Norway? It's like, that's kind of hard to do when you're going, herd-furd.
- 52:42Tad Eggleston: No, that's Sweden. Oh, okay, whatever, I don't… Sweden, Finland. Sweden.
- 52:47Tad Eggleston: And no, no, no.
- 52:49Tad Eggleston: You don't confuse Norway and Sweden. No, no, no, no, no.
- 52:55Mark Pracht: I'm sorry, I apologize to both Norway and Sweden.
- 52:59Tad Eggleston: No, you don't need to apologize to Sweden, just to Norway.
- 53:02Mark Pracht: I'm sorry to Norway.
- 53:07Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, … he… he grew up on… on Spider-Man and The Phantom and… and that sort of thing, and, like, I had no idea that The Phantom was big in…
- 53:21Tad Eggleston: And I fell down a complete rabbit hole, only to find out that, like, he'd grown out of the Phantom really early, too, so, like, the rabbit hole I fell down…
- 53:29Tad Eggleston: He's like, yeah, probably.
- 53:32Tad Eggleston: But I also discovered that, in…
- 53:38Tad Eggleston: In Norway, like, the first Spider-Man comics that came out.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: We're, like, right around the time
- 53:46Tad Eggleston: that the Punisher was introduced. So, like… he met the Punisher bef…
- 53:53Tad Eggleston: before they went back and reprinted Gwen Stacy dying.
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, like…
- 54:00Tad Eggleston: I think… I forget who the art… and Sean's always the one that knows. It was… it was Ditko, Romita, who was the guy after Romita?
- 54:09Mark Pracht: cocaine, right?
- 54:10Tad Eggleston: N-n- No. Thank you.
- 54:12Sean Harklerode: pain, or, ….
- 54:18Mark Pracht: Because I think Gil Kane did the, ….
- 54:26Tad Eggleston: Okay, maybe it was after Gil Kane then, because it's not Gil Kane.
- 54:31Tad Eggleston: …
- 54:36Tad Eggleston: It's… it's a name that… that I, like, only kinda know.
- 54:42Tad Eggleston: And all the ones….
- 54:43Sean Harklerode: money?
- 54:44Tad Eggleston: What?
- 54:45Sean Harklerode: Jim Mooney?
- 54:47Tad Eggleston: No, I think so.
- 54:48Mark Pracht: Yeah, Mooney!
- 54:50Sean Harklerode: I'm doing….
- 54:51Mark Pracht: Sean just likes to… Sean just likes to put the names of people he's played out.
- 55:00Sean Harklerode: ….
- 55:01Mark Pracht: Shoot, it's your nickel!
- 55:07Mark Pracht: I don't… I don't remember, but I do… I think it was Gil Kane.
- 55:11Sean Harklerode: Ross An… Ross Andrew?
- 55:12Mark Pracht: Right, Ian.
- 55:13Tad Eggleston: Ross Andrew. Ross Andrew is… is… was his first Spider-Man artist.
- 55:18Mark Pracht: Maybe, maybe I'm getting that back right. Maybe it was Ross Andrew and then Gil Kane.
- 55:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:23Sean Harklerode: No, it was Gil Kane, then Ross Annard.
- 55:26Mark Pracht: Okay.
- 55:26Tad Eggleston: Okay. I have to thank God.
- 55:28Sean Harklerode: I just pulled it up on Wikipedia, so I….
- 55:30Tad Eggleston: That's exactly where I was. You just, you just got there faster.
- 55:35Tad Eggleston: But yeah, Ross Andrew, apparently, was… was who… who, … Dude.
- 55:44Tad Eggleston: The original ones published in…
- 55:49Tad Eggleston: And Mark, Jim Mooney was in there. It was actually Ditko, Romita, Larry Lieber did one issue, Don Heck did
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: Looks like 6?
- 56:04Tad Eggleston: Jim Mooney did… Maybe… 10?
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: Ross Andrew took over at 1.25.
- 56:15Tad Eggleston: he had Bischema for a little bit, and then Gil Kane. But yeah, so 125 was the first one, at least, that he remembered in Norway, and then at some point, they went backwards from there, and came forward again.
- 56:31Tad Eggleston: So…
- 56:32Tad Eggleston: That just… it… that was way more time than I meant to spend on that, but it was… it was amusing to me when I learned it. It's always interesting to see how… how comics travel.
- 56:44Mark Pracht: I just, I always remember when I was a kid, the first time my parents took me to Mexico.
- 56:50Mark Pracht: I brought, I bought a… El hombre arana.
- 56:56Mark Pracht: And, …
- 56:58Mark Pracht: I know, I would know, I don't remember what the… like, obviously, the numbering was all different, but it was….
- 57:04Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 57:04Mark Pracht: It was the Jackal?
- 57:06Mark Pracht: Okay. I just remember that the opening sequence… and it was all in Spanish, and I couldn't read Spanish, so I was just like, wow, alright. But, it was… the Jackal had, like, a bust of Spider-Man, and he was…
- 57:21Mark Pracht: soliloquying to… the bust about how he apparently… I assume how he was gonna kill him.
- 57:28Mark Pracht: And I was like, oh, yeah, okay, and I was like, okay.
- 57:32Tad Eggleston: No, it was actually… it was actually… and this is why you should have learned Spanish, it was a very special episode of Spider-Man, where it was… it was the Jackal soliloquying about how the air in his ways, and how he needed to become a better Jackal so that he could be friends with Spider-Man.
- 57:53Mark Pracht: Was this….
- 57:55Sean Harklerode: Cuz, didn't… Was it Mexico where they kept Gwen alive?
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 58:04Sean Harklerode: Time?
- 58:06Tad Eggleston: They did not… That sounds right.
- 58:08Sean Harklerode: steal Gwen off.
- 58:10Sean Harklerode: in, in, in Mexico.
- 58:11Mark Pracht: I… I… I had read that they didn't kill Gwen off. I have no idea.
- 58:17Mark Pracht: Because, like, obviously, I had just got the one issue that was totally out of context of anything.
- 58:24Mark Pracht: And… but it was the Jackal.
- 58:26Mark Pracht: Which we all know is tied directly to…
- 58:30Mark Pracht: Gwen's death, right? Right. Because it was, yeah.
- 58:33Sean Harklerode: Right.
- 58:34Mark Pracht: He was, you know, he cloned her, so…
- 58:39Mark Pracht: Because it was that professor, … what is it?
- 58:44Mark Pracht: I always want to say miles, but that's not true.
- 58:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't remember.
- 58:49Mark Pracht: I don't remember either.
- 58:54Tad Eggleston: Remember, healer.
- 58:56Sean Harklerode: I feel like it's getting late enough that… Professor Miles Warren.
- 59:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, look at that!
- 59:01Mark Pracht: Yeah, that's right.
- 59:01Tad Eggleston: smiles.
- 59:02Mark Pracht: Miles, yes!
- 59:05Tad Eggleston: Good old Miles.
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: I, I, I feel like, I feel like we're, we're now, entering the Twilight Zone.
- 59:15Sean Harklerode: Yes.
- 59:16Tad Eggleston: ….
- 59:16Sean Harklerode: I feel like.
- 59:17Tad Eggleston: So, I feel like it's time to…
- 59:21Tad Eggleston: To make some sort of decision on what we want to read next.
- 59:27Tad Eggleston: I'll check some.
- 59:33Sean Harklerode: … I know we've talked about Zorro.
- 59:39Sean Harklerode: And there are many cool options for Zorro.
- 59:43Tad Eggleston: Don McGregor had a run, Matt Wagner had a run that I love.
- 59:49Tad Eggleston: And then there's the recent Sean Gordon Murphy.
- 59:57Sean Harklerode: ….
- 59:59Tad Eggleston: I'm definitely down for a Western, either Blueberry or… or Jonah Hex.
- 1:00:05Mark Pracht: I would… I… I… My feeling about Zorro…
- 1:00:13Mark Pracht: is that we should wait until you guys get your hands on that Toth collection. Okay. Because I've never seen those, I've read about them, I would like to look at them.
- 1:00:23Mark Pracht: I would prefer to wait for that.
- 1:00:26Mark Pracht: Okay. Technically, technically, Zorro is a Western, so…
- 1:00:32Mark Pracht: I… my vote would be either we do some Jonah Hex, or we do… blueberry.
- 1:00:42Mark Pracht: either one is fine with me, because I absolutely… like, if we're doing the, Jimmy Pamiati, gray… Pamiati Gray…
- 1:00:52Mark Pracht: Jonah Hex from the… early 2000s.
- 1:00:57Mark Pracht: I'm all in.
- 1:00:58Mark Pracht: I love that book.
- 1:01:00Mark Pracht: … I also wouldn't be adverse to… to doing… The early 70s stuff.
- 1:01:08Mark Pracht: But… I don't think it's as good as the Palmiati stuff.
- 1:01:12Tad Eggleston: No, if we were gonna do Jonah Hex, I think I'd want to do the Palmiati stuff. I've read some of the 70s stuff. I haven't read any of the Palmiati stuff.
- 1:01:20Mark Pracht: In part because I just don't like the character enough.
- 1:01:23Tad Eggleston: Because I've read the 70s stuff, but I've heard only good things about the Palmiati Justin Gray.
- 1:01:30Mark Pracht: like.
- 1:01:30Tad Eggleston: So….
- 1:01:31Mark Pracht: I think that there is… Jesus Christ. I'm gonna say, looking at, Blueberry…
- 1:01:40Mark Pracht: Purchase options for myself.
- 1:01:43Mark Pracht: As much as I would love to read this frickin' book….
- 1:01:46Tad Eggleston: I may have digital copies that can be distributed.
- 1:01:52Mark Pracht: Okay.
- 1:01:54Mark Pracht: because I did find there is….
- 1:01:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah. No.
- 1:02:00Mark Pracht: It has been….
- 1:02:01Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, not in great… not really in print in English in a while, since, like, Epic did a run on it.
- 1:02:11Tad Eggleston: Way back when. It's, it's, it's really… it's due for….
- 1:02:16Mark Pracht: Yeah, cause I'm… I'm looking at, at, affordable…
- 1:02:21Mark Pracht: copies of it, and they're all in French.
- 1:02:25Tad Eggleston: not affordable.
- 1:02:26Mark Pracht: Not affordable. And the English versions are not affordable.
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, like, ….
- 1:02:35Mark Pracht: That being said, I would love to revisit Jonah Hex. I haven't done it in quite a while.
- 1:02:40Tad Eggleston: So then let's do Jonah Hex this time.
- 1:02:42Sean Harklerode: Okay.
- 1:02:42Tad Eggleston: Do we have, … Cause it looks like there's… there's, … I'm just looking on… on…
- 1:02:57Tad Eggleston: DC Universe, and it was a… 70 issue series.
- 1:03:05Mark Pracht: I mean, I would suggest, for myself, I would suggest, just….
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: But, but there were definitely different, different volumes, and even… even different omnibi. So, like…
- 1:03:21Tad Eggleston: Is there… is there a, ….
- 1:03:25Mark Pracht: Let me, let me look here.
- 1:03:29Tad Eggleston: one that's….
- 1:03:30Sean Harklerode: Slow.
- 1:03:30Tad Eggleston: out to you.
- 1:03:33Sean Harklerode: So I don't… really have, phone lots? … I did love the Lansdale … Joe Lansdale.
- 1:03:50Sean Harklerode: And who was the artist on that run?
- 1:03:54Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 1:03:55Sean Harklerode: Early 90s, mid-90s.
- 1:03:58Mark Pracht: Oh, yeah, there was the, …
- 1:04:03Mark Pracht: The… yeah, it was Tim Truman.
- 1:04:05Sean Harklerode: Tim Truman, yes!
- 1:04:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, I do love me some Tim Truman.
- 1:04:08Sean Harklerode: And his… which leads into Tim Truman's, like, Lone Ranger, too, but….
- 1:04:15Mark Pracht: Right.
- 1:04:16Mark Pracht: Hi.
- 1:04:17Mark Pracht: Look, I… if… if we're gonna do the Palmiati and Gray one.
- 1:04:23Mark Pracht: I don't have any problem with doing the Lansdale Truman one. That's not a problem for me. What I would suggest for the Palmiati and Gray one is, like, I would just say, let's do the first two trade paperbacks, which is Face Full of Violence and Guns of Vengeance.
- 1:04:40Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:04:41Mark Pracht: So, but I mean, again, I'm not… I'm also not adverse to… there is, it looks like there's a Jonah Heck's Shadows West…
- 1:04:52Mark Pracht: That is….
- 1:04:56Tad Eggleston: Is it Guns of Vengeance? You said Faithful, ….
- 1:04:59Mark Pracht: Face full of violence.
- 1:05:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay, I see.
- 1:05:02Mark Pracht: Guns… guns have been….
- 1:05:03Tad Eggleston: Guns of Vengeance. Okay.
- 1:05:05Mark Pracht: They're both on… they're both on Comixology. It looks like the….
- 1:05:08Sean Harklerode: Oh, that makes it easy.
- 1:05:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:11Mark Pracht: Yeah, that looks like the… the Truman and Lansdale version, they have a omnibus edition of…
- 1:05:21Mark Pracht: All 3 of their… miniseries, which is…
- 1:05:26Mark Pracht: 2 Gun Mojo, Shadows West, and Writers of the Warm and such.
- 1:05:32Mark Pracht: Which, I'm putting this in my wishlist.
- 1:05:38Mark Pracht: ….
- 1:05:39Sean Harklerode: Oh, and the All-Star Western Omnibus, which is to be released.
- 1:05:44Sean Harklerode: At the end of October.
- 1:05:48Mark Pracht: I was not fond… when they switched it from Jonah Hex to All-Star Western.
- 1:05:53Mark Pracht: Yeah, it… I really thought something was lost.
- 1:05:57Mark Pracht: For myself, personally.
- 1:05:59Sean Harklerode: Okay.
- 1:06:00Mark Pracht: …
- 1:06:04Mark Pracht: That's… that's just me. But… I would say, like, Faithful of Violence is an amazing book.
- 1:06:12Sean Harklerode: pure violence.
- 1:06:13Mark Pracht: And then, and Guns of Vengeance, I think… I think those two are really…
- 1:06:20Mark Pracht: They're… they're a good place to start.
- 1:06:22Sean Harklerode: And, ….
- 1:06:24Mark Pracht: I actually think… I actually think, Sean, that I may have bought Face Full of Violence for you for a Christmas present, like, years ago.
- 1:06:35Tad Eggleston: So look on your shelves, is what he's saying.
- 1:06:38Sean Harklerode: to vote.
- 1:06:41Mark Pracht: Because there was a… there was one year, like, I… I tend to, as I have… I have various friends who are into the same kinds of stuff, and I often find myself, I'm just like, I'm just gonna buy this book for everybody.
- 1:06:55Tad Eggleston: I understand that. I've been known to do it myself.
- 1:06:57Mark Pracht: I think you and Ken… Both got face full of violence one Christmas.
- 1:07:04Sean Harklerode: It's just like, I think that there was that thing….
- 1:07:08Mark Pracht: Idol of millions?
- 1:07:10Sean Harklerode: Yes.
- 1:07:10Mark Pracht: You both got.
- 1:07:11Sean Harklerode: That I… that I got.
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: I am gonna take us out, and then we can babble for a second before I go to bed.
- 1:07:22Sean Harklerode: Great.
- 1:07:23Tad Eggleston: For Mark Pratt and Sean Hargerow, this has been the Pulp Blotter on 22 Panels, and we will see you after the next page.
