- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:21I am so shook by all of the kind words and excitement for our
- 0:28return for 2025. You guys were so sweet.
- 0:31Like honestly just we were bombarded by comments of
- 0:35excitement and well wishes and I'm just so excited for this
- 0:40year. So thank you guys so much.
- 0:41Before I get into the stories for today, I did want to let you
- 0:43guys know that we have decided to close our Geneva group.
- 0:47So we just haven't had capacity to be in the weeds of like
- 0:52interacting with you guys, sharing stories in there.
- 0:55And we haven't for a really long time.
- 0:57So we made the decision instead of trying to like figure out a
- 1:00way to make it work, to just close it for now.
- 1:03That's like the, I guess energy that we're trying to bring in to
- 1:072025 is like if we can't work smarter, we definitely can't
- 1:11work harder right now. We realized that 2024, our
- 1:16capacity was like at its absolute limit.
- 1:19So we're trying to find ways to kind of alleviate a bit of that
- 1:23stress on like the admin side of things.
- 1:26Into the stories for today. A couple of these stories I
- 1:28realized after I finished recording yesterday that I could
- 1:31have included them in yesterday's stories, but here we
- 1:34are. So the first story that I have
- 1:36for you guys is that Chart Cosmetics is facing backlash
- 1:39again for an influencer trip that they are currently on to
- 1:44Necker Island amid the LA fires. So Tart Cosmetics is currently
- 1:48hosting an influencer trip on Necker Island and a lot of
- 1:51people are not happy about them still going ahead with the trip
- 1:55essentially amid the LA fires happening this week.
- 1:58So I'm interested to hear your take on this.
- 2:02I was reading a huge Reddit thread about all of it to kind
- 2:05of gauge like the general feedback and it seems that there
- 2:08are two major camps. The first camp is that TART is a
- 2:12business. This trip would have been
- 2:13planned well ahead of the fires. Obviously paid for all of that,
- 2:17and disasters happen all the time around the world.
- 2:21So why would TART kind of cancel this trip?
- 2:24It's a work trip, it's not like the trip was to LA.
- 2:27People in this camp seem to feel like the backlash towards Tarte
- 2:31generally boil down to likability politics.
- 2:34Chart is the number one culprit, as we know, for throwing these
- 2:38kind of lavish influencer brand trips in our faces.
- 2:41And some people are even equating these trips to rage
- 2:44bait, which I had never really thought of them like that
- 2:47before. But that is such a good point
- 2:50and something that I'm going to keep a closer eye on because at
- 2:53the end of the day, like any influencer trip that chart did
- 2:56would get backlash. Obviously this one is getting
- 2:59maybe a little bit more because of the timing of it, but again,
- 3:03they couldn't really control that.
- 3:04OK. The second group on the Internet
- 3:05seems to feel like it was the wrong move for Tart to move
- 3:08ahead with this trip because partly some of the influencers
- 3:12on the trip might be from LA and Tart is an American beauty brand
- 3:17and obviously American like beauty, fashion, makeup artistry
- 3:21is so anchored in Lai think at first I felt more in the first
- 3:25camp, but my opinion has changed now because of the content
- 3:30specifically that Tart has been putting out around this trip.
- 3:33So they are doing content where all of these like beautiful
- 3:37people are packing donation packages and things like that on
- 3:41this trip while they're all safe on like this luxury vacation.
- 3:45And obviously it is a bit of like, damned if you do, damned
- 3:48if you don't, right? Like if Tart was not being
- 3:51public about any donations or anything that they were giving
- 3:55back around this time, they would get so much more backlash.
- 3:58But this content specifically, it does feel icky.
- 4:03Like, it feels really performative, right?
- 4:06It feels really tone deaf given it's like these gorgeous
- 4:09millionaire influencers on a free luxury trip on this safe
- 4:13island kind of almost performing activism.
- 4:17That's how it comes across. I don't think people would feel
- 4:21as upset about all of this if it was a different brand that took
- 4:25everyone away. I think because it's tart it
- 4:28feels even worse. And that is why the point of
- 4:31like them putting on these trips as rage bait just resonated with
- 4:36me so much. I'm like, that's actually such
- 4:38an interesting theory. And I feel like it really leans
- 4:42into the like, no PR is bad PR. And I feel like might be a bit
- 4:45of an archaic mindset. But at this point, they know
- 4:49that any trip that they do is going to get backlash.
- 4:52And so the fact that they continued to move forward with
- 4:56this trip despite the fires, I'm sure that they knew that this
- 5:00was going to get them even more backlash.
- 5:03So I don't know, it's really interesting.
- 5:05However, they did, I don't know if it was this trip or if it's
- 5:08their next influencer trip, but they are taking, I think it's
- 5:11one or two like quote UN quote, regular people, like consumers
- 5:15who get to bring plus ones on these trips.
- 5:17And I think that's a bit of a progressive way to do these
- 5:19trips. I think that's showing that
- 5:22they're listening a little bit to the feedback.
- 5:24You know, people are always like, why don't you just give
- 5:26back to like your loyal customers instead of always
- 5:29giving back to these influencers?
- 5:30So I do think they're starting to listen to a little bit of the
- 5:33feedback and the backlash, but it doesn't seem like they're
- 5:35going to be slowing down these trips anytime soon.
- 5:37OK, so there is a little offshoot drama from this.
- 5:39So Ken Urich, who is a Tik toker, posted a teaser today of
- 5:44a new podcast episode where she discusses the tart trip
- 5:48invitation and how Brianna Chicken Fry was also invited.
- 5:53So she said in this teaser that she was invited.
- 5:55And then Tart was basically like, can we jump on a call like
- 5:58with her management? So the brand let them know that
- 6:02Brianna would also be going on this trip.
- 6:04And in the teaser, Ken was like, well, maybe I'll get an apology,
- 6:07but Brianna doesn't seem like the type.
- 6:09I think she said the type of bitch to apologize.
- 6:11So in case you missed it, Ken called Brianna out last year
- 6:14after she did a Plan Bri Live podcast show.
- 6:17Before the show, Ken, I guess sent a few topics to Brianna and
- 6:21the team saying that these are kind of like her non
- 6:24negotiables, like the topics that she will not address or
- 6:27doesn't feel comfortable addressing on the podcast live
- 6:29show. And I guess Brianna asked Ken a
- 6:33bunch of those questions anyways.
- 6:35So she made or she I think she did a take a podcast episode
- 6:39about it that like went a bit viral on TikTok calling Brianna
- 6:43out. I don't even know if she said
- 6:44her name, but it was very obvious who it was.
- 6:46So the craziest part of this is that Ken released this trailer,
- 6:50like I said today, while they're all on this trip.
- 6:52So she's on this trip, this like intimate vacation with Brianna
- 6:57and drops this clip. That is the shady like petty
- 7:03Internet like influencer shit that we just love here.
- 7:08I just love how shameless that is.
- 7:11Speaking of shameless shit going down on TikTok, the next story
- 7:15that I have for you guys is that a bride has gone viral for
- 7:19washing off her makeup 20 minutes before her wedding and
- 7:22then posting it all on TikTok. OK so this is also something I
- 7:26forgot to cover yesterday, but over the break a bride named
- 7:29Lauren Avery posted a TikTok vlog of her washing off her
- 7:32professional bridal makeup 20 minutes before her wedding.
- 7:35In the clip she is like freaking out a bit before she washed,
- 7:38pushes off all of her makeup saying she basically just hated
- 7:41it, and then proceeds to do her own makeup.
- 7:45The makeup she did herself. Like it looks good.
- 7:47Sure a lot of people are like it looks the same.
- 7:49Like I don't know honestly the picture she showed of herself
- 7:52after was so far away I really could not tell what her makeup
- 7:56looked like compared to the before.
- 7:57But this clip went so viral for kind of the wrong reasons.
- 8:02So normally I do think the Internet would rally around her
- 8:05simply because, I don't know, doing that is super stressful.
- 8:09It's kind of relatable. Like I'm sure there's so many
- 8:12brides that get their makeup done professionally and you're
- 8:14not used to seeing yourself in so much like heavy makeup and
- 8:18you feel like you kind of hate it.
- 8:19Like I think that's probably a relatable experience if you
- 8:21don't get your makeup done professionally very often.
- 8:24So yes, I think normally this clip would have probably gone
- 8:28over well. However, there were two towels
- 8:31in this clip that made the Internet kind of side eye her
- 8:33and then turn on her first when she's washing off her makeup.
- 8:37One her bridesmaids says something like, oh, she's still
- 8:40here. Do you want me to tell her to
- 8:42leave? Referring to the makeup artist.
- 8:45So the makeup artist was still there.
- 8:47So like rather than communicating with the makeup
- 8:50artist, she basically hid from her.
- 8:53They all kind of came together and decided what they were going
- 8:56to do about like telling her to leave and then she redid it
- 8:59herself. Second, when she's redoing her
- 9:02makeup, Lauren says I can't wait to post this on TikTok.
- 9:06The makeup artist was at Twirly Shears, so she herself didn't
- 9:10even have TikTok, but she got TikTok to respond because this
- 9:15went so viral and I guess people in her life were sending it to
- 9:18her. Lauren didn't mention her.
- 9:19She didn't say who it was, but I guess the people on her team
- 9:22knew that Lauren was one of her brides and was sending it to
- 9:25her. So the makeup artist confirmed
- 9:27that Lauren did do a trial. She said that in the comments,
- 9:31and she said she thought that Lauren was happy with her
- 9:33makeup. She had no indication that she
- 9:35wasn't. She thought she was so nice and
- 9:37that everything went well. And then she also let us know
- 9:41that Lauren's wedding was in August.
- 9:44So she posted this video four months after that.
- 9:46To me, this whole scenario is so indicative of like our obsession
- 9:50now with these viral gotcha moments.
- 9:53I do think if TikTok virality wasn't a thing and we weren't
- 9:57also like fucking brain rotted. I, I don't think that Lauren's
- 10:01first thought would have been like, let me feel myself taking
- 10:06this off and redoing it because I know that this is going to do
- 10:08so well on TikTok. I I do think she may have
- 10:11thought like, let me just communicate this to my makeup
- 10:15artist. But I'm also surprised that the
- 10:18people who were around her getting ready, it seemed like
- 10:21there was a lot of people. There were definitely
- 10:22bridesmaids. I'm sure her like family, her
- 10:25mom, if she has a mom, like, you know, I'm sure there was a lot
- 10:28of people there in the room getting ready with her.
- 10:30It sounded very busy. It seemed very lively.
- 10:33I'm surprised that none of them said to her.
- 10:36I mean, maybe they did and she just said no.
- 10:38But you know, I think in that scenario, like no one in my
- 10:40life, like the women in my life, my mom, my aunts, my friends
- 10:46would let me take off all my makeup and redo it myself 20
- 10:49minutes before while the makeup artist is still there.
- 10:51Like they would pull me back down to reality and be like, she
- 10:55is still here. So either you can communicate
- 10:57that to her, what you want, what you don't like, or if you don't
- 11:01feel comfortable because it's obviously your wedding day and
- 11:03this is important in your stress, whatever.
- 11:05Like they would do that for me. People were already kind of like
- 11:09when the video went up and then when the makeup artist
- 11:12responded, that's when everyone, like, really turned on her when
- 11:16they heard more of the full story, like the time between the
- 11:18wedding and when she posted this, the fact that she did have
- 11:22a trial, the fact that, you know, it seemed like everything
- 11:25went well, all of that. OK, The last story that I have
- 11:28for you guys, I'm gonna recount a current drama that is going on
- 11:32on Minecraft YouTube. Now I know that this is obscure,
- 11:36but you guys also know that every once in a while I like to
- 11:39do a bit of like a boy Internet story when I feel like it has
- 11:43bigger implications and this one I feel like does.
- 11:46So there's this three-way drama right now between Dream XQC and
- 11:51Tommy in it. These are some of the biggest
- 11:54Minecraft streamers on the Internet.
- 11:56Dream also came into kind of like mainstream consciousness in
- 12:002022 when he did a face reveal. If you guys remember that after
- 12:04years of streaming anonymously. So XQC he's this is the
- 12:08background XQC. He streamed with Donald Trump
- 12:11back in August and this week Tommy in it publicly called XQC
- 12:15out for that stream. This kicked off a feud between
- 12:18the two of them and then Dream was brought into it when XQC hit
- 12:22back at Tommy Innitt saying his career was all about quote Dick
- 12:26riding Dream. And now all of this has exploded
- 12:29because Dream posted a meme about this feud in which he
- 12:32called fans of Tommy Innitt the R word.
- 12:36So he made his own meme and he called them the R word but he
- 12:40did not say the R word. He like typed out the word Dream
- 12:43got tons of backlash for this obviously and he has now tweeted
- 12:47a response he said. Super annoying having certain
- 12:50creators shit on me and my friends constantly when we never
- 12:52say anything back. You shouldn't say the R word but
- 12:55I'm literally autistic and the whole Internet loved everyone
- 12:59calling me slurs so obviously people are being disingenuous.
- 13:02I mean this wasn't an apology, just an explanation.
- 13:05I posted a meme that I knew would make a lot of people mad.
- 13:08I'm not surprised people are mad.
- 13:10I don't take what the majority of people say on Twitter
- 13:13seriously. OK so that's quite a non
- 13:16apology. He's actually telling us that
- 13:18he's not apologizing and saying that because he's autistic.
- 13:22I guess he can use that word. I think is maybe his implication
- 13:24there. So I wanted to cover this.
- 13:27It's obviously a very quick story, but I think it's a big
- 13:30deal because these are the boys who are like, so are like men
- 13:35actually don't know really how old any of these people are, but
- 13:37they give boy energy. They are some of the most
- 13:40influential people to Gen. Alpha right now.
- 13:44And this is so far from like the worst thing that's happening on
- 13:46boy Internet. I think we all know that, but I
- 13:48think it's important to cover these kind of controversies the
- 13:51same way that we cover girl Internet controversies.
- 13:54The media loves to cover like girl Internet feuds and whatever
- 13:58is happening on girl Internet. But I think I think we can all
- 14:03probably agree that what happens on boy Internet is arguably more
- 14:06harmful and we need to give a bit more attention to it.
- 14:09On girl Internet, we are basically being fed from a young
- 14:14age how to improve ourselves to like an inch of our lives at any
- 14:19expense necessary, right? I would say the main overarching
- 14:23theme on girl Internet, the main overarching message is how girls
- 14:28can improve themselves. Boys on the other hand, get
- 14:33messaging like this, like they get this overarching message of
- 14:36entitlement and ignorance. And at the end of the day, they
- 14:41are learning from a very young age on the Internet from these
- 14:44role models how to be hateful towards others, whereas girls
- 14:48are learning how to be hateful towards themselves.
- 14:51And that to me is the biggest difference between a girl
- 14:54Internet and boy Internet. So I'm going to be coming for
- 14:56you boy Internet in 2025. OK, guys, that's it for mini
- 15:02scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 15:04I love you guys. Please rate review and
- 15:06subscribe. Please follow me on Instagram.
- 15:08I'm trying to get my followers up.
- 15:11I feel like every time I post because I'm starting to change
- 15:14my content a bit and like post more like vlogs day in the life
- 15:16stuff about like behind the scenes of the business and
- 15:19whatever's going on. And I don't know, like my OG
- 15:23followers are like not having it.
- 15:24So please follow me anyways guys, I love you.
- 15:29I'm so excited to be back and we will talk to you tomorrow.
- 15:33Bye.
