Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Should we just ban kids' cell phones altogether?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Is banning smart phones for kids a dumb idea, not
- 0:04Speaker 1: the apps, but the phones themselves. That would leave them
- 0:07Speaker 1: with dumb phones, sands apps, sands internet, just text and
- 0:11Speaker 1: phone calls. Remember the old Nokia or the Alcatels of
- 0:15Speaker 1: the early two thousands. They came in that sort of
- 0:17Speaker 1: weird light orange peachy color. There was a purply bluey
- 0:21Speaker 1: one as well, like you could get too tight, two
- 0:23Speaker 1: colors and one type. David Semol's talking about this. This
- 0:27Speaker 1: is after a blog post suggesting it'd be easier and
- 0:31Speaker 1: less restrictive for everyone else if we just banned the
- 0:34Speaker 1: hardware and not the software. Make smartphones like cigarettes or beer.
- 0:38Speaker 1: If you saw a twelve year old with one, you
- 0:40Speaker 1: would judge their parents, wouldn't you. At present, parents hand
- 0:44Speaker 1: these things out like candy caving by osmosis to their kids.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Pear pressure to own one of the things. The social
- 0:51Speaker 1: media bands don't really seem to be working very well.
- 0:54Speaker 1: As we've spoken about before, half the Aussie kids get
- 0:56Speaker 1: around theirs. Where there's a will, there's always a way.
- 1:00Speaker 1: The actual device itself does, on the face of it,
- 1:04Speaker 1: kind of make more sense. Don't you think you can
- 1:07Speaker 1: still communicate? But not with the entire world, and not
- 1:10Speaker 1: with the entire sum of human knowledge, good and bad,
- 1:14Speaker 1: at your unsupervised child's fingertips. This way, adults can keep
- 1:18Speaker 1: using social media and not have to use some ID
- 1:21Speaker 1: or a date of birth test to log into their Facebook,
- 1:24Speaker 1: which all sounds great, except the real problem here is
- 1:28Speaker 1: parents themselves. They are often the ones who are on
- 1:31Speaker 1: their phones and ignoring their kids in the first place.
- 1:34Speaker 1: If you were a child, wouldn't you want to be
- 1:36Speaker 1: doing whatever your parents were doing too. It doesn't really
- 1:40Speaker 1: matter what the law says, and changing it won't change everything.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It's ultimately up to adults raising those kids to teach
- 1:48Speaker 1: them right from wrong, good from bad, and whether eight
- 1:50Speaker 1: hours a day doom scrolling is a behavior that's acceptable
- 1:54Speaker 1: for them or their kids. For more from early edition
