- 0:04Speaker 1: Time to hit the inside scoop, presented by Game Changer
- 0:07Speaker 1: FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal joining us right now. I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: just warning you, Ken, we're pretty pretty heated up today.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You probably caught a few minutes of the last segment.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But let's start with yours that I thought brought a
- 0:17Speaker 1: lot of fire on Monday morning, the article about the
- 0:20Speaker 1: managers on the hot seat. Hold up, it's April twenty first, Ken,
- 0:24Speaker 1: it seems a little bit early for that article.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It does, and I said as much in the story.
- 0:29Speaker 3: But at the same time, we've got three teams, three
- 0:32Speaker 3: of the top seven payrolls in the game, with managers
- 0:36Speaker 3: who are under high expectations, and three teams that, for
- 0:39Speaker 3: a variety of different reasons, are struggling.
- 0:42Speaker 2: The Mets, of course, the Phillies.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Of course, the Astros may be lesser known to fans
- 0:46Speaker 3: around the country what's going on with them, But their
- 0:50Speaker 3: manager Joe Spot, along with their general manager Dana Brown,
- 0:53Speaker 3: they're in their last years of their contracts, so yes,
- 0:57Speaker 3: they're by definition on the hot seat, and with all
- 1:00Speaker 3: their injuries, they really could get a pass, and maybe
- 1:03Speaker 3: should get a pass. But their owner, Jim Crane is
- 1:06Speaker 3: someone who has not necessarily been patient at times in
- 1:11Speaker 3: the past, and he is an owner who clearly has
- 1:14Speaker 3: stated many times the window here will always be open.
- 1:18Speaker 3: And I don't since he's one to hear excuses. Even
- 1:20Speaker 3: though they've lost, my goodness so much from their rotation.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Josh Hater has.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Yet to pitch Paanya has been in and out of
- 1:26Speaker 3: the lineup. There's a lot that has gone wrong, and
- 1:29Speaker 3: you can explain it that way. I'm just not sure
- 1:32Speaker 3: Crane will be patient.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Ken.
- 1:34Speaker 5: First of all, thanks for being on time. Means a
- 1:36Speaker 5: lot to me. I appreciate it. Second of all, I
- 1:40Speaker 5: mean espata, Rob Thompson. We were in Philly this weekend.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Rob Thompson. There's there's all kinds of stuff flying around
- 1:44Speaker 5: about him, Carlos Mendoza. Is there anyone else we should
- 1:47Speaker 5: be talking about that hasn't or is just those main
- 1:50Speaker 5: big three?
- 1:50Speaker 4: I guess we could call him.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Those three jumped out to me as early people to
- 1:56Speaker 3: look at. And there are others, of course, and certainly
- 1:59Speaker 3: mac Otaro has had his problems with Kansas City and
- 2:02Speaker 3: their slow start, but he's signed I believe through twenty thirty.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Alex Corey in Boston, the Red Sox haven't exactly set
- 2:09Speaker 3: the world on fire, but he's in the second year of.
- 2:11Speaker 2: A three year deal.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Ad I think you pointed this out to me. Three years,
- 2:15Speaker 3: twenty one million plus. They're not going to fire him
- 2:17Speaker 3: in the middle of the season. The three I mentioned
- 2:20Speaker 3: were three that I thought, Well, Mendoza could have been
- 2:23Speaker 3: in immediate trouble and still could be in immediate trouble.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Thompson.
- 2:26Speaker 3: The noise is growing in Philadelphia and Espada.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Again, we have an owner there who.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Won't necessarily be patient, so that is why I focused
- 2:36Speaker 3: on them. But of course there's always the possibility that
- 2:39Speaker 3: other managers will draw greater scrutiny as the season goes on.
- 2:44Speaker 6: Which of those owners, because you've mentioned Jim Crane, but
- 2:47Speaker 6: the Stevie Cohen also and John Middleton, which of them
- 2:52Speaker 6: has a history of getting rid of guys?
- 2:56Speaker 4: I know they're all.
- 2:56Speaker 6: I guess Jim Crane's the most tenured of them. But
- 3:00Speaker 6: who has a history of being okay with eating a
- 3:03Speaker 6: contract like you said with Alice Korus contract or say
- 3:07Speaker 6: making a move.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Well, the Phillis under Middleton, of course, replaced Joe Girardi
- 3:12Speaker 3: with Rob Thompson in twenty twenty two end up.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Going to the World Series. So there's one example.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Jim Crane. He doesn't necessarily have a history of this.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Of course, they fired Luno and aj Hinch after the
- 3:26Speaker 3: sign stealing scandal, but I don't know that that counts.
- 3:28Speaker 2: In this regard.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And he did, though, replace James Klick, his general manager
- 3:34Speaker 3: after winning the twenty twenty two World Series. They could
- 3:37Speaker 3: not reach an agreement. It was well documented at the time.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Cohen does not have necessarily a history of this, but
- 3:46Speaker 3: the Mets did change a lot of their coaches after
- 3:49Speaker 3: last season, and certainly.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Cohen had some role in that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Even if most of the calls were from President of
- 3:55Speaker 3: Baseball Operations David Stearns, we don't know the exact dynamic there.
- 3:59Speaker 3: So while there might not be a history, Steve Cohen
- 4:03Speaker 3: is paying a ton of money for I don't know
- 4:05Speaker 3: how many years in a row now, and his teams
- 4:08Speaker 3: have not gotten results.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Mendoz is an interesting case though.
- 4:12Speaker 3: If you remember two years ago, guys, his first season
- 4:14Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, the Mets got off to a bad start.
- 4:17Speaker 3: The Mets rallied to make the playoffs and then advanced
- 4:21Speaker 3: to the National League Championship.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Series.
- 4:23Speaker 3: He was David Stern's hand pick guy. Everyone thought, Wow,
- 4:27Speaker 3: this could be maybe the next great manager. Obviously, last
- 4:30Speaker 3: year was a departure from what they accomplished in twenty four.
- 4:35Speaker 3: It was a collapse, and they addressed that by changing a.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Lot of their players.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yes, they also changed a lot of their coaches, and
- 4:42Speaker 3: that often is a precursor to changing the manager. But
- 4:46Speaker 3: it seems to me that Carlos Mendoza, I don't know
- 4:49Speaker 3: that he can get dumb this quickly, if you know
- 4:51Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Okay, so Ken, I'm going to somehow take us from
- 4:57Speaker 1: this to something you wrote about last week. It was
- 5:01Speaker 1: connecting some of the former Mets players in the organization
- 5:05Speaker 1: to the Orioles. I don't think we had asked you
- 5:07Speaker 1: about it, but I also wanted to connect what the
- 5:09Speaker 1: Mets are going through right now to the Oriols. If
- 5:12Speaker 1: you see any connections there. I just remember two off
- 5:15Speaker 1: seasons ago our show being like, Eh, lots more spending,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but like this isn't making a ton of sense. They
- 5:21Speaker 1: really need pitching, and then it blows up Mets this offseason.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I like some of these moves. These are some good names.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Half the teams out of position. There's so much change
- 5:31Speaker 1: in so little time, and at least so far this season,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it blows up and they might create a hole that
- 5:36Speaker 1: they can't get out of. Oriols last year created a
- 5:38Speaker 1: hole they couldn't get out of. Fired Brandon Hyde. So anyway,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I was just looking at things last night. I somehow
- 5:42Speaker 1: like stumbled upon your notes, Calum again and was reading
- 5:43Speaker 1: it was like, I feel a lot of similarities here
- 5:46Speaker 1: with what's gone on. It's not like these teams aren't trying.
- 5:48Speaker 1: The Oriels two years ago they were trying. They had
- 5:50Speaker 1: dealt with you know, Angelos and not spending for years
- 5:53Speaker 1: they spent. They just seemed like they were off and
- 5:56Speaker 1: how they were approaching things and did things differently this offseason.
- 6:00Speaker 3: They're definitely trying both teams. That's not the criticism here.
- 6:03Speaker 3: That's not anything that people would say, ah, it's not happening.
- 6:07Speaker 3: You might question how they're trying, and that obviously is
- 6:11Speaker 3: the question, or was what the Orioles last year might
- 6:14Speaker 3: turn out to be the question this year With the Mets.
- 6:17Speaker 3: My concern all along was that it was too much
- 6:20Speaker 3: new new coaches, new players, a lot of new players,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and I felt even going back to January, I wrote this,
- 6:30Speaker 3: it might take them some time to gel and that
- 6:32Speaker 3: ultimately might be what the case is here without Soto, especially,
- 6:37Speaker 3: they're three and eleven, so they don't even have their
- 6:39Speaker 3: best player.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Then they have all of this change and.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Yes, players out of position, players that are unfamiliar with
- 6:47Speaker 3: the pressures that come with playing in New York. All
- 6:50Speaker 3: of these things are coming together. So Fangrafts entering the
- 6:54Speaker 3: season had the Mets with the second highest projected win
- 6:58Speaker 3: total in baseball. I believe that was based on the
- 7:02Speaker 3: numbers on paper, the projections, the talent that they had.
- 7:06Speaker 3: It doesn't always mean that the talent fits together. Now
- 7:10Speaker 3: it's early, and maybe the Mets finally do coalesce at
- 7:13Speaker 3: some point, especially after they get Soto back. But we're
- 7:17Speaker 3: seeing another case here, guys, of when the projections and
- 7:21Speaker 3: the numbers don't tell us everything. It might turn out
- 7:25Speaker 3: that way, but at least in the early part of
- 7:27Speaker 3: the season, there are a lot of things going on
- 7:30Speaker 3: with this team, it seems intangibly and tangibly that might
- 7:34Speaker 3: have created this poor start.
- 7:37Speaker 1: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the
- 7:41Speaker 1: sea Geek app so if you're looking to do basically
- 7:44Speaker 1: anything this spring or summer, there's one place to go.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Now.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Sek has all the concerts, baseball games, World Cup tickets.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Whatever you need is on cke Trust me, I'm gonna
- 7:53Speaker 5: be hitting some concerts and some festivals this summer. I'm
- 7:56Speaker 5: gonna be looking for Sek.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I can't wait to see Aja adding the best tickets
- 8:01Speaker 1: he can for concerts and festivals.
- 8:03Speaker 7: We'll get plenty of pictures there.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But also when he's looking, what he does is he
- 8:07Speaker 1: looks for when he's going to, say an arena for
- 8:09Speaker 1: a concert, a green dot meaning he's got a good
- 8:12Speaker 1: deal in a good spot.
- 8:13Speaker 7: That's where Seekeek helps you out.
- 8:14Speaker 1: With over thirty five million download see Gek is the
- 8:17Speaker 1: number one rated ticketing app. And of course we have
- 8:19Speaker 1: the code for the FT network Territory ten for ten
- 8:23Speaker 1: percent off your next set of tickets at sea Geek.
- 8:25Speaker 1: That's ten percent off any tickets with the promo code
- 8:29Speaker 1: Territory one zero. Make sure you click the link in
- 8:31Speaker 1: the description to download the app and have the code
- 8:34Speaker 1: automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
- 8:37Speaker 7: Props to see geek.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Ken the Mets for three and oh though when Sodo
- 8:42Speaker 5: first went down, so they were everyone's saying they.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Don't need them. So what happened between three and oh
- 8:47Speaker 4: and three and eleven, ken, I.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Don't know, but certainly they should be capable of winning
- 8:53Speaker 3: games without one Sodo. My goodness, Cisco Lindor, they've got
- 8:57Speaker 3: all these guys.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yesterday we had was Tim Briton.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Yep, Tim Briton, Okay, I want to check his name
- 9:03Speaker 5: right on from the Athletic College.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Yes, and we asked him, why don't they just listen?
- 9:08Speaker 5: I love Marcus Simeon, great dude, had a great career,
- 9:12Speaker 5: put bowet, show a second baby at third. It kind
- 9:16Speaker 5: of solves their infield problem. Listen, nothing against Marcus Simeon.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Scott was banging this drum hard. You know, defensive run saved,
- 9:22Speaker 5: but they got a score runs at some point too,
- 9:24Speaker 5: and that I don't know that the defense gets that
- 9:26Speaker 5: much worse by doing.
- 9:28Speaker 4: What they're doing that instead of just doing what they've
- 9:30Speaker 4: been doing.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Well.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Aja, you and I both know Marcus Simeon's got three
- 9:35Speaker 3: years left on his contract at big money.
- 9:37Speaker 2: They're not going to give up on him so soon.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Now, if you are paying attention, you might have noticed
- 9:43Speaker 3: that while Marcus Simeon won a.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Gold Glove last year and remains a very good.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Defender, he hasn't hit in three years. It's not something
- 9:51Speaker 3: that's snuck up on anyone now. They wanted to get
- 9:54Speaker 3: out of the NEMO contract five years left there, three
- 9:56Speaker 3: years left with Simeon. They thought that was a good
- 9:59Speaker 3: exchange to sort of prove their defense. Well, okay, but
- 10:03Speaker 3: you were going to sacrifice offense if past performance held,
- 10:07Speaker 3: which so far it is holding. I don't know that
- 10:10Speaker 3: they would do such a dramatic thing like that, aj
- 10:13Speaker 3: even though in some degree it would make sense. Bashett
- 10:16Speaker 3: seems to be holding his own a third defensively, so
- 10:19Speaker 3: it's not a problem baby moving all over the place.
- 10:22Speaker 2: That is a bit of a problem.
- 10:23Speaker 3: They've taken a player who's pretty good and in my opinion,
- 10:27Speaker 3: kind of used him.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The wrong way. So I don't know where they're going
- 10:31Speaker 2: with this, but I can't see them giving up on
- 10:33Speaker 2: Simmy and this quickly.
- 10:35Speaker 7: So that would be my follow up.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know, I know we talked about this yesterday, but
- 10:38Speaker 1: I am pretty passionate about this. You know, they did
- 10:41Speaker 1: a deal that right now looks atrocious as Brandon Nemo
- 10:44Speaker 1: is hitting super well and they could really use a
- 10:45Speaker 1: Nemo in their outfield, and Simeon has caused the team
- 10:49Speaker 1: to be out of position. We're pinpointing a guy, but
- 10:51Speaker 1: it does cause a lot of chaos, and if you
- 10:54Speaker 1: removed him, it makes a lot more sense. In your
- 10:57Speaker 1: history of covering front offices, how much do they stick
- 11:01Speaker 1: to what they did and not wanting to show that
- 11:03Speaker 1: they might have made a mistake. And my question is
- 11:05Speaker 1: if we get to June and the Mets are still
- 11:08Speaker 1: in the mix but they're not in a great spot, like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: do they start benching the players so that they can
- 11:13Speaker 1: do other things? Again, I know it's early, but like
- 11:16Speaker 1: you said, has in it for years. His bat speeds
- 11:19Speaker 1: towards the bottom of the league. Like there's other guys
- 11:20Speaker 1: that aren't hitting well, but they're peripherals and indicators are good. Right,
- 11:24Speaker 1: this is not one of those cases. And I'm just
- 11:26Speaker 1: trying to tell it like it is. This is something
- 11:28Speaker 1: that could cost you your season by sticking to this
- 11:31Speaker 1: trade that you made and saying nope, we are not
- 11:33Speaker 1: giving in on this. This is how the roster is
- 11:35Speaker 1: going to look Scott.
- 11:37Speaker 3: It's a fascinating question and generally speaking, front offices do
- 11:42Speaker 3: not like to concede defeat, certainly not this early in
- 11:45Speaker 3: the season.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Now, you asked about June.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And if this is still going on and it's still
- 11:49Speaker 3: a problem, sure at that point you have to take
- 11:52Speaker 3: a look at it.
- 11:53Speaker 2: You can't simply let.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Things continue in a negative way if you don't feel
- 11:58Speaker 3: that they're going to get better. I'm sure they want
- 12:00Speaker 3: to give Marcus Simeon more of a chance to breathe here,
- 12:03Speaker 3: he too is joining a new team. He's never played
- 12:06Speaker 3: in New York. I know he's experienced, but it's a
- 12:08Speaker 3: different animal there. And you can't just say on April
- 12:12Speaker 3: twenty first, hey it's done.
- 12:15Speaker 2: We can't live like this in time.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Sure that might be a decision that they're forced to make,
- 12:21Speaker 3: but I can't see them doing it yet. But to
- 12:24Speaker 3: your basic question, do front offices like to concede defeat?
- 12:27Speaker 2: No, they don't. None of us do when we're wrong.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But at times it has to happen.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And what's really interesting about the Mets, as opposed to
- 12:35Speaker 3: say another struggling team, even the Royals, for example, they
- 12:38Speaker 3: have put all this money into the team, second highest
- 12:42Speaker 3: peril in the game. I don't know how patience Steve
- 12:45Speaker 3: Cohen's going to be. I know he's got a ton
- 12:47Speaker 3: of money and it doesn't matter to him. It's a
- 12:49Speaker 3: line item in his ledger sheet. But at the same time,
- 12:53Speaker 3: he's frustrated too. And remember what he said when he
- 12:56Speaker 3: took over woned a World Series title within three to
- 12:59Speaker 3: five years.
- 13:00Speaker 2: You are well past that window.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Yeah, wanting to win makes you make good choices and
- 13:05Speaker 6: bad choices alike. But I'm gonna go across the country
- 13:09Speaker 6: to a team that's not struggling at all, but they
- 13:11Speaker 6: lost their closer, their key off season acquisition in Edwin Diaz.
- 13:17Speaker 6: The impact of that loss one, how did the Dodgers
- 13:21Speaker 6: deal with it?
- 13:21Speaker 4: Two?
- 13:22Speaker 6: Is there a better team more set up than the Dodgers?
- 13:26Speaker 6: And is this er for two now for Edwin Diaz
- 13:29Speaker 6: and a WBC because obviously the freak injury last time
- 13:33Speaker 6: and he pitched this year. Bone chips don't happen in
- 13:37Speaker 6: a month, but this is this is just not a
- 13:40Speaker 6: good look if I'm looking from the outside in Well.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I don't know what we can attribute this injury to.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And the other one was a freak injury. This one, yes,
- 13:50Speaker 3: he did pitch and who knows what that might have
- 13:53Speaker 3: meant to the condition of his arm.
- 13:55Speaker 2: It's impossible to say will he be back.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Of course, they're saying he's going to be back sometime
- 14:01Speaker 3: in the second half of the season. It's elbow surgery,
- 14:04Speaker 3: it's not Tommy John surgery. Still, you never want to
- 14:07Speaker 3: see a player undergo any form of operation.
- 14:10Speaker 2: It's not easy to come back from. We kind of
- 14:13Speaker 2: take it for granted.
- 14:14Speaker 3: These guys come back whole, and often they do, but
- 14:18Speaker 3: it's not that easy.
- 14:20Speaker 2: How can they recover or what will they do?
- 14:22Speaker 4: Well?
- 14:22Speaker 2: That's not going to be that much of a problem
- 14:24Speaker 2: for them. They've got Tanner.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Scott who is again throwing well, and they've got, of
- 14:28Speaker 3: course a set of other relievers who are really good
- 14:31Speaker 3: from Vesia and trying in the whole group trying to
- 14:33Speaker 3: maybe is not what he once was, of course, but
- 14:36Speaker 3: they should be okay.
- 14:37Speaker 2: In that regard.
- 14:38Speaker 3: This is the team that is incredibly deep. They can
- 14:41Speaker 3: bring up a young arm for the bullpen at some
- 14:43Speaker 3: point if necessary. I don't see that being the issue here.
- 14:47Speaker 3: The question I have is when he comes back, is
- 14:50Speaker 3: he Edwin Diaz or is he something less than that?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Then it becomes a concern.
- 14:55Speaker 3: But even then, he's going to be back, say July August,
- 14:59Speaker 3: and you would think he'd have time to build strength
- 15:02Speaker 3: toward the playoffs. What do the Dodgers care about most
- 15:05Speaker 3: the playoffs? So even if Edwin Diaz had been healthy,
- 15:09Speaker 3: they might have eased up on him at some point
- 15:11Speaker 3: in the season. That's what they do, and they will
- 15:13Speaker 3: always slow play injuries. So I don't know that this
- 15:17Speaker 3: is as big a blow to them as it would
- 15:20Speaker 3: be to other clubs, but certainly it's not an encouraging development.
- 15:24Speaker 2: No one would say.
- 15:25Speaker 4: That on the Dodgers.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Dalton Rushing had his quotes about the thing, and then
- 15:31Speaker 5: he admitted he wasn't really in on the scouting report,
- 15:33Speaker 5: and then he played first base yesterday.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Would is there an.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Opportunity here where they would think about moving him if
- 15:40Speaker 5: they needed a piece at the trade deadline, because I'm
- 15:42Speaker 5: sure there's teams out there that would love to have
- 15:44Speaker 5: Dalton Rushing as their everyday catchers. Never going to happen
- 15:47Speaker 5: as long as Will Smith's there, So are there is
- 15:49Speaker 5: there a way that you could see that the Dodgers
- 15:51Speaker 5: would think about possibly moving in because he is raking.
- 15:55Speaker 3: AJ we were talking about this I believe in the
- 15:57Speaker 3: car going over to the game on Saturday, and he
- 16:00Speaker 3: is in a position like a lot of young Dodgers
- 16:03Speaker 3: players have been in the last few years, where he'd be.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Better off elsewhere. Doesn't mean the Dodgers feel he'd be
- 16:10Speaker 2: better off elsewhere.
- 16:10Speaker 3: And when I say better off, he'd get more playing
- 16:12Speaker 3: time elsewhere.
- 16:14Speaker 2: The Dodgers, I am sure, see this as well.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Where one will Smith injury away from really needing Dalton
- 16:20Speaker 3: Rushing And why would we trade him when we're in
- 16:23Speaker 3: that position and when we have Rushing contributing as he
- 16:27Speaker 3: is in a part time role. So what's best for
- 16:30Speaker 3: Dalton Rushing in terms of his career might not be
- 16:33Speaker 3: best for the Dodgers, And I guess at the deadline, sure,
- 16:38Speaker 3: anything is possible, but I can't see the Dodgers entertaining this.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Unless it was a major deal.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Unless they we're getting something huge in return, and I'm
- 16:49Speaker 3: not sure what that would be at this point.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Catching is extremely valuable.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got
- 16:56Speaker 1: big news. During squares bi annual Releases event, they launched
- 16:59Speaker 1: a way of innovative new tools to help local businesses
- 17:02Speaker 1: run faster smarter and more profitably.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Square is awesome.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Around Orlando, where AJ and I live, we go to
- 17:08Speaker 1: the farmers' markets around town. I go to the one
- 17:10Speaker 1: near Lake Iola. It's awesome. I use Square to pay
- 17:13Speaker 1: with my phone. I get the receipt right away.
- 17:15Speaker 7: It's great.
- 17:16Speaker 5: And so many businesses, not just small businesses, uses. So
- 17:18Speaker 5: many restaurants and businesses I walk into, not only in Orlando,
- 17:21Speaker 5: but all over the country have these and you just
- 17:25Speaker 5: use your credit card, pops out a receipt, emails it
- 17:27Speaker 5: right to you. It's so fast, it's so efficient, it's
- 17:30Speaker 5: so hassle free. It's one of the great things that
- 17:32Speaker 5: you have going.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Square launched its most powerful tools yet designed to give
- 17:36Speaker 1: local businesses a competitive edge without the complexity. If you're
- 17:39Speaker 1: ready to sell smarter, run faster, and stress less right now,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you can get up to two hundred dollars off Square
- 17:44Speaker 1: hardware at Square.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Dot com slash go slash foul. That's Square dot com,
- 17:48Speaker 7: slash go slash foul. Run your business smarter with Square.
- 17:52Speaker 7: Get started today.
- 17:54Speaker 5: Well, my point was when Ken and I had the conversation,
- 17:57Speaker 5: I think Joe was in the car too, Joe Davis,
- 17:58Speaker 5: who obviously ports for the Dodger.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I asked Joe.
- 18:02Speaker 5: I said, Joe, how's dalon rushing handling this, because he's
- 18:05Speaker 5: probably saying if I was on twenty nine, not twenty nine,
- 18:08Speaker 5: but a lot of other teams, there's probably twenty four
- 18:10Speaker 5: teams he could go to that he would be the
- 18:13Speaker 5: starting catcher, play every day, and he's just not playing.
- 18:17Speaker 5: And when he gets in there though, he bangs and
- 18:19Speaker 5: then and Joe's like, oh, he's handled it great, and
- 18:21Speaker 5: he said all the right things. Of course he's gonna
- 18:24Speaker 5: say all the right things, but deep down he's got
- 18:26Speaker 5: to be thinking, Please, I love that I'm gonna get
- 18:29Speaker 5: a ring. Maybe I already got one, maybe I can
- 18:31Speaker 5: get another one, But I'd also like to earn some
- 18:33Speaker 5: money for my family and have a nice career.
- 18:35Speaker 7: And play baseball every day. Yes, yeah, in.
- 18:38Speaker 5: LA, it's not gonna happen. That was I mean, I
- 18:40Speaker 5: don't know. I don't know what they do with him.
- 18:42Speaker 5: It was just a question that Ken and I and
- 18:43Speaker 5: Joe talked about.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and we had an interesting one in.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Aj also too.
- 18:48Speaker 3: You do hear from the young Dodger players that there's
- 18:51Speaker 3: nowhere else they'd rather be, even learning so much and
- 18:55Speaker 3: it's the model franchise in sports right now. But at
- 18:59Speaker 3: the same time, from an individual standpoint in terms of
- 19:03Speaker 3: earning money and getting to play the game you love
- 19:06Speaker 3: and you've trained your whole life to play, it's not
- 19:09Speaker 3: a great situation for some of these guys.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So there is that yin and yang there with the Dodgers.
- 19:14Speaker 2: But to answer the question again, I just don't see
- 19:17Speaker 2: them trading Russian is ultimately.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Listen, of course they're gonna say that no one's gonna
- 19:22Speaker 5: come out, but they don't have any young guys that one.
- 19:24Speaker 4: What's the other young guy they have?
- 19:27Speaker 3: Well, if Casparius has been in that position before, some
- 19:29Speaker 3: of their other young pictures and she had.
- 19:31Speaker 4: For him pictures are way different than we talked.
- 19:34Speaker 7: About hesse On Kim yesterday and how he's.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Not a young guy. He's already got paid.
- 19:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean he did that much.
- 19:43Speaker 5: This is a young kid who is a pig, who's
- 19:47Speaker 5: been who was on the Dodgers, and there ain't nowhere
- 19:50Speaker 5: for him to go.
- 19:51Speaker 4: There's nowhere for him.
- 19:52Speaker 5: There's no path in the next seven years or how
- 19:55Speaker 5: many ever years Will Smith has left for him to
- 19:57Speaker 5: play all the time unless something God forbid having there's
- 20:01Speaker 5: not a path. No, Dodgers are just saying going.
- 20:04Speaker 7: They have DH taking and the ultimate rich Man's life.
- 20:07Speaker 4: First base Freddy, they have DH take and they have
- 20:09Speaker 4: catcher taking.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Yes, but Ken rich owners luxuries having depth like that.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I have two elite catchers.
- 20:15Speaker 7: What about you?
- 20:15Speaker 1: That's great dinner common session with your other owners and
- 20:18Speaker 1: base books.
- 20:19Speaker 7: Ken, Thank you, we'll talk to you later this week.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Thanks guys UH.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And Props A Game Changer for hooking us up with
- 20:27Speaker 1: this segment. It was presented by them. It's the number
- 20:30Speaker 1: one youth sports app that helps you coach smarter, connect,
- 20:32Speaker 1: live and replay the action. If you want to learn more,
- 20:35Speaker 1: the website super simple or the QR code is on
- 20:38Speaker 1: your screen even easier GC dot com. Let's talk to
- 20:46Speaker 1: Jalen Thompson, our friend back on foul Territory and he
- 20:49Speaker 1: covers the Royals for the case star. Jalen, it's good
- 20:52Speaker 1: to see you and I love your smile. It's not
- 20:55Speaker 1: something we're seeing too frequently right now for Kansas City,
- 20:59Speaker 1: So tell us what's happening. This team looked like it
- 21:01Speaker 1: was going to be decent, and it still might be,
- 21:03Speaker 1: But do they feel like they're in a little bit
- 21:05Speaker 1: of a Code red situation right now.
- 21:08Speaker 8: Yeah, what's up, guys, Hope you guys are doing well.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Thanks for having me on, and you're absolutely right, Scott.
- 21:13Speaker 8: The Royals did not think they were going to be
- 21:16Speaker 8: in this spot this season, just looking at it being
- 21:21Speaker 8: so early and the team they put together, going out
- 21:25Speaker 8: and acquiring a guy like Isaac Collins from the Milwaukee Brewers,
- 21:29Speaker 8: getting Laye Thomas, a guy that's had great production in
- 21:32Speaker 8: his career. They did not think with the returning guys
- 21:37Speaker 8: of Bobby Way Junior, Mike Elgarcia, if any pass Routino,
- 21:40Speaker 8: Salvador Perez, Seth Lugo, Michael Waka, Cole Reagance, the list
- 21:44Speaker 8: goes on and on, they were going to be seven
- 21:46Speaker 8: and sixteen, and as Bobby Way Junior put yesterday, arguably
- 21:50Speaker 8: the worst team in baseball. This was a shock. This
- 21:53Speaker 8: was something that they did not want to happen. We
- 21:56Speaker 8: saw them in the World Baseball Classic and how well
- 21:59Speaker 8: they performed. They were to talk of the of the world.
- 22:02Speaker 8: They were to talk of just the whole thing, right,
- 22:05Speaker 8: Vinnie Paspentina with the coffee shots, Venezuela winning, Mikeel winning,
- 22:09Speaker 8: the MVP Award in the WBC. So this was totally
- 22:13Speaker 8: a stop to their system and now they're trying to
- 22:15Speaker 8: figure out how to get out of it.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Well, how do they get out of it?
- 22:19Speaker 5: Because they can't score any runs and by the way,
- 22:20Speaker 5: White Socks are ahead of the Royals, just saying can
- 22:22Speaker 5: we show those standings.
- 22:23Speaker 4: A little bit more? A good wait talk, But how
- 22:27Speaker 4: do they get out of it?
- 22:28Speaker 5: Because the biggest problem they're pitching hasn't been awful though
- 22:30Speaker 5: the bullpen has been a kind of a disaster, especially
- 22:34Speaker 5: once the Steven went down and Ersik struggled as a closer.
- 22:37Speaker 4: But how do they get out of this?
- 22:38Speaker 5: Because Vinnie's not hitting, Salvey's not hitting, Michael's doing fine,
- 22:43Speaker 5: Bobby's doing fine, but there's a whole list of guys
- 22:45Speaker 5: that aren't really performing up to what the Royals thought.
- 22:48Speaker 4: So how do you fix that whole thing?
- 22:51Speaker 8: Yeah, Aj, it is kind of like and the way
- 22:54Speaker 8: I view it as this right here, when I'm watching
- 22:56Speaker 8: each game and I'm writing my game story, you will
- 22:59Speaker 8: see the roles beating games and it's like two to one,
- 23:02Speaker 8: three to two, five to four, right, And you just
- 23:05Speaker 8: have a feeling that the bullpen is going to give
- 23:07Speaker 8: it away at the end of the game. And it's
- 23:09Speaker 8: been like that for multiple occasions this season where they
- 23:13Speaker 8: will have a leader, it's tied and you just know
- 23:15Speaker 8: you have a gut feeling this is not gonna go
- 23:18Speaker 8: the way the roles we want to go. So how
- 23:20Speaker 8: do they fix this? I mean, I guess the easiest
- 23:23Speaker 8: question is to score more runs, but that's harder to
- 23:26Speaker 8: do in Major League Baseball because everybody is so good
- 23:30Speaker 8: and pictures throw one hundred miles per hours all throughout
- 23:32Speaker 8: the innings, right, So I think they just have to
- 23:36Speaker 8: They say they want to keep fighting. They said that
- 23:38Speaker 8: that's their goal, that's the mentality. But really, I guess
- 23:41Speaker 8: when you're in a slump like this, just don't press
- 23:44Speaker 8: and just get back to playing the game of baseball.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Like Bobby said yesterday, enjoy it. It's a privilege to
- 23:51Speaker 8: wear that jersey, and that's what they're that's their mindset.
- 23:54Speaker 8: Come out there and just play and just let the
- 23:56Speaker 8: chips fall what they may.
- 23:58Speaker 4: All Right, Well, what about that.
- 24:00Speaker 6: I know you said it's hard to hit, but it's
- 24:02Speaker 6: hard to hit for everybody. They move the fences in
- 24:05Speaker 6: and we ain't see nothing different about home runs for
- 24:08Speaker 6: the Royals. I think they're twenty third in Major League
- 24:12Speaker 6: Baseball right now and home runs, Like Bobby Witt has
- 24:15Speaker 6: zero homers, he's never been driven in, so he can't
- 24:19Speaker 6: score runs that way. Like, is it a approach as
- 24:23Speaker 6: a team because they're.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Really good at not striking out?
- 24:27Speaker 6: Or is it the fact that they just don't have
- 24:29Speaker 6: the personnel on this team that's gonna be able to
- 24:31Speaker 6: score runs that way, so they have to do it
- 24:34Speaker 6: in little bunches here and there, with singles and doubles
- 24:38Speaker 6: and stealing bases.
- 24:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you're right. It is the personnel to
- 24:43Speaker 8: a certain degree. They went and they, like I say,
- 24:47Speaker 8: they got Isaac Collins, they got Wayne Thomas, they got
- 24:49Speaker 8: guys they thought that could fix in helping the outfield.
- 24:52Speaker 8: But when Vinnie and Paspentino and salade Bras are not hitting,
- 24:56Speaker 8: that's a problem. If you look at yesterday's game, they
- 24:59Speaker 8: had bases loaded with no outs in the third inning
- 25:03Speaker 8: and not one run score. None of those runners on
- 25:06Speaker 8: base came home to score. That's a bigger indictment to
- 25:10Speaker 8: this entire offense. It's just that they can't figure out
- 25:13Speaker 8: a way to put the big inning together and when
- 25:17Speaker 8: they have, Like I look back at a game they
- 25:20Speaker 8: played against the Detroit Tigers last week. They were down
- 25:23Speaker 8: six to one, they come back, they take the lead.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Salvador Perees is a three run homer and they couldn't
- 25:28Speaker 8: hold that game. So you know there's flashes of it.
- 25:31Speaker 8: There's flashes of those big innings. You know they can
- 25:34Speaker 8: do it because if you look at the back of
- 25:35Speaker 8: their baseball car, and I tell everyone this all the time,
- 25:38Speaker 8: they are gonna be the guys that their baseball car,
- 25:42Speaker 8: their career says they are. It just hasn't happened so far.
- 25:45Speaker 8: In April. Benny notoriously starts slow in the early months
- 25:49Speaker 8: of a season, so maybe he'll turn around as the
- 25:52Speaker 8: season goes on. Soalde Perez, he's a guy that hit
- 25:55Speaker 8: thirty home runs and one hundred RBIs. He's the team captain,
- 25:58Speaker 8: world's legend. People know that way can do. But he's
- 26:01Speaker 8: also going to be turning thirty six years old. Is
- 26:04Speaker 8: it to a point where father time might be catching
- 26:06Speaker 8: up with him? You like it to see how a
- 26:09Speaker 8: Carter Jensen and Jack Kagalon, But Jack Casgione just hit
- 26:12Speaker 8: his first home run yesterday he had hit a home
- 26:15Speaker 8: run since the end of September last year, right, So
- 26:20Speaker 8: all these things it's like I always like it to like,
- 26:24Speaker 8: if you are in the kitchen and you're cooking food
- 26:26Speaker 8: and you're trying to make several different things at one time,
- 26:29Speaker 8: it's hard to regulate the temperature of everything and get
- 26:32Speaker 8: it done and fix and prepare properly. And I think
- 26:36Speaker 8: if the bullpen's not working, the office is not working,
- 26:38Speaker 8: you just have a meal that you just can't enjoy
- 26:40Speaker 8: right now. And that's what really Royles fans are getting,
- 26:43Speaker 8: and that's why they booed in conn yesterday. And while
- 26:45Speaker 8: they're continuing to say we need change, we need change,
- 26:49Speaker 8: the question is will the Royals give them that change?
- 26:51Speaker 8: Will they make those changes inwardly to get back up
- 26:54Speaker 8: the al central standings?
- 26:57Speaker 4: Jalen?
- 26:57Speaker 5: What's the change though? Is there a coffee machine in
- 26:59Speaker 5: the dug out? Is it a venezuela or someone with venezuela?
- 27:03Speaker 5: Whatever they did in the WBC, what's the what's the change?
- 27:06Speaker 5: Bring up someone from Triple A? What's that gonna do?
- 27:08Speaker 5: These guys are kind of who you got, So what's
- 27:11Speaker 5: the change that macuatroll could make? To try to mess
- 27:14Speaker 5: mess with the I don't know the chemistry or whatever.
- 27:18Speaker 8: Yeah, and that's good question. AJ you look at what
- 27:21Speaker 8: they could do. They put different guys in the lineup.
- 27:24Speaker 8: They they put guys based on matchups, and they try
- 27:27Speaker 8: to do everything they can. They got three hitting coaches.
- 27:30Speaker 8: You got al the zum, Watt got Marcus Themes, you
- 27:33Speaker 8: have Connor Dawson. They're working with the guys really and
- 27:37Speaker 8: I think the guys just have to swing their way.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Out of it.
- 27:41Speaker 8: And the question is can you really do that during
- 27:44Speaker 8: the season of one hundred and sixty two games where
- 27:47Speaker 8: every game matters, and each time that you keep giving
- 27:50Speaker 8: away games, does that take your confidence away a little bit?
- 27:53Speaker 8: Does that does your confidence wane every time that you
- 27:56Speaker 8: go up there and you're not getting the job done?
- 27:58Speaker 8: You know, honestly, I think the change is going to
- 28:00Speaker 8: have to be Bobby Way Junior and Vinnie Paspentina of
- 28:03Speaker 8: Salvador Perez coming together and really getting this team going
- 28:07Speaker 8: in the right direction. The leaders on this team, they
- 28:10Speaker 8: went through something like this last year and they had
- 28:12Speaker 8: a players only meeting and in that meeting they a
- 28:16Speaker 8: lot was said that allowed them to really come together
- 28:19Speaker 8: as a team, and maybe that might be something that
- 28:22Speaker 8: might need to be on the horizon coming up. But
- 28:26Speaker 8: they've been close a lot of these games. I will
- 28:29Speaker 8: give them that. It's just a matter of finishing off
- 28:32Speaker 8: the deal in getting those victories, and I think they
- 28:34Speaker 8: can do that. It's still way early in the season,
- 28:37Speaker 8: so we could be talking about a totally different team
- 28:40Speaker 8: in July, but right now it doesn't look good.
- 28:44Speaker 5: Jalen as the fourth place White Sox manager Ozzie Gean
- 28:47Speaker 5: used to say, good teams play, bad teams have meetings.
- 28:50Speaker 5: So meetings or meetings are one of those things that
- 28:52Speaker 5: I just don't I don't understand why people think, oh,
- 28:55Speaker 5: have a team meeting, it'll cure it doesn't it doesn't matter,
- 28:58Speaker 5: and tell you guys aren't trying to play well. So
- 29:00Speaker 5: right the mental breather quote from Quatruro, did that really
- 29:04Speaker 5: was that really a big deal as everyone was trying
- 29:06Speaker 5: to make it out about because and it wasn't to
- 29:09Speaker 5: be a big deal because Salvi responded by sending out
- 29:12Speaker 5: the tweet he said, was he just angry because I
- 29:15Speaker 5: said yesterday that Madge handled it right. He at least
- 29:18Speaker 5: told him the night before he didn't tell him the
- 29:19Speaker 5: day off, so it wasn't like Salvi went home I
- 29:21Speaker 5: was thinking I'm gonna play.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna play.
- 29:23Speaker 5: He told him the night before, Hey, I'm gonna give
- 29:25Speaker 5: you a day So was this that big of a
- 29:26Speaker 5: deal or did we just blow it out as proportion
- 29:28Speaker 5: as media members?
- 29:30Speaker 8: So the way that this all went down, I'm glad
- 29:33Speaker 8: you asked this question. We talked to Matt Quatrell every
- 29:36Speaker 8: day before before games. He was saying how Salvi was
- 29:41Speaker 8: gonna have a day off because as a catcher, it's
- 29:44Speaker 8: hard to catch one hundred and sixty two games. Ajau
- 29:46Speaker 8: noted very well, so normally he has Salve has days off.
- 29:50Speaker 8: It was a day game after night game, and Q
- 29:55Speaker 8: was just trying to provide color. This is his words
- 29:58Speaker 8: of the situation and saying, well, we're gonna give a
- 30:01Speaker 8: mental breather, you know, you know, give a guy ad
- 30:04Speaker 8: off his feed to just reset and you know, get
- 30:07Speaker 8: back to where it can be. Salve has been struggling
- 30:10Speaker 8: a little bit. There's no secret look at his numbers.
- 30:12Speaker 8: So Salvie gets a lot of information from family and friends,
- 30:17Speaker 8: and he didn't initially see what Q said, but it
- 30:20Speaker 8: was sent to him, and then people started asking, well,
- 30:23Speaker 8: are you okay? Is anything going on with you mentally?
- 30:26Speaker 8: Et cetera, et cetera. That's where he goes into social
- 30:30Speaker 8: media and saying, well, I don't need a mental breather.
- 30:34Speaker 8: He called one of the articles fake fake, fake news,
- 30:37Speaker 8: basically like everything's fine with him. So then it becomes
- 30:40Speaker 8: this whole firestorm where we get to Salve the next
- 30:44Speaker 8: day and he says him and mac coultreill and J. J. Coacolta,
- 30:47Speaker 8: Roji and a manager talk and they're all on the
- 30:50Speaker 8: same page. So it was pretty much something that kind
- 30:54Speaker 8: of blew out of proportion because it was just the
- 30:56Speaker 8: lines of communication were kind of misconstrued a little bit.
- 31:00Speaker 8: That's what everyone in every party in that situation has said,
- 31:04Speaker 8: So taking their word for it, I guess they said
- 31:08Speaker 8: everything's fine moving forward, but it wasn't a good look.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Absolutely, But is it also kind of the precipice of
- 31:17Speaker 6: the fact that Carter Jensen's there, Carter Jensen's young, and
- 31:22Speaker 6: Salvey only has a team option after this year. I'll
- 31:25Speaker 6: get it, we're only in April, but those thoughts have
- 31:28Speaker 6: to be at least running through their head because you
- 31:32Speaker 6: see the future. You see the future in left handed
- 31:35Speaker 6: hitting catcher who's athletic and young and has.
- 31:38Speaker 8: Power exactly and Lacarter Jensen, he's a guy where he
- 31:44Speaker 8: is going to be the world's future. He's leading the
- 31:46Speaker 8: team and RBIs and home runs and he's been of
- 31:51Speaker 8: all the offensive hitters, the guy that really stands out
- 31:54Speaker 8: the most as he's not really been phased by a
- 31:57Speaker 8: bad April, a bad stretch of games. We all knew
- 32:00Speaker 8: he could hit. They really love his ability to have
- 32:03Speaker 8: play coverage, plate discipline and things of that nature. But
- 32:07Speaker 8: the issue is you also have salved Or Perez, who
- 32:11Speaker 8: is your team captain, your catcher. He's gonna garner so
- 32:15Speaker 8: many of those at bats, So now you're either using
- 32:18Speaker 8: both of them as a designate hitter or a catcher
- 32:20Speaker 8: whoever is behind it plate that day. And we all know,
- 32:24Speaker 8: like I said earlier, five the time is undefeated, it's
- 32:27Speaker 8: gonna come a point where eventually car is gonna have
- 32:29Speaker 8: to take that mantle away from Salad or Perez. I
- 32:32Speaker 8: don't know how soon that might be. It might be
- 32:35Speaker 8: later this season, it might be going into next year.
- 32:38Speaker 8: But Carter It says that Salve is his hero. He's
- 32:41Speaker 8: a case, a Kansas City native. He's grew up watching him.
- 32:45Speaker 8: He loves Salves a great mentor, so there's no ill
- 32:48Speaker 8: will on either side. They have a great relationship. It's
- 32:52Speaker 8: just the fact that when you're going through a tough
- 32:54Speaker 8: streak like the worlds are going to right now, where
- 32:56Speaker 8: the team is slumping and they're not winning games, everything
- 32:59Speaker 8: gets mad and because it's getting to magnified, that's why
- 33:03Speaker 8: you're hear hearing Salvey being upset about the comment of
- 33:06Speaker 8: a mental breathe. You're hearing stories about the fans booing
- 33:10Speaker 8: at home and can you really can't excuse Carter Jensen
- 33:13Speaker 8: as well for oversleeping, but he's a rookie. That happens
- 33:16Speaker 8: rookie mistakes. We've all overslept before. It's just a lot
- 33:20Speaker 8: is going on outside the noise, right, So as a team,
- 33:24Speaker 8: the russ have to come together and really just win
- 33:26Speaker 8: games and everything will be quiet.
- 33:29Speaker 4: That was my point.
- 33:30Speaker 5: You know what the royal should do, have everyone oversleep,
- 33:33Speaker 5: because then then get hot like Carter Jensen did after
- 33:35Speaker 5: he overslept.
- 33:36Speaker 4: So that's it.
- 33:37Speaker 5: Forget the espresso, forget everything else. Just tell everyone don't
- 33:40Speaker 5: wake up until one o'clock and then show for a
- 33:42Speaker 5: two o'clock game.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Whammy.
- 33:44Speaker 8: Yeah, you know what, They've tried everything that might be
- 33:47Speaker 8: something you might need to do.
- 33:48Speaker 4: They ain't tried that. I bet they ain't trying that.
- 33:53Speaker 6: I would not be able to sleep the night before
- 33:54Speaker 6: if everyone was like, hey, we're showing up an hour
- 33:56Speaker 6: before the game, I couldn't. I couldn't do it. Has
- 33:59Speaker 6: there been any other instances? I know, no more sleeping in,
- 34:03Speaker 6: But with Carter Jensen's youthful mistakes that you've noticed being
- 34:09Speaker 6: around the team every day.
- 34:11Speaker 8: No, he is, he's a guy eric Where he is?
- 34:15Speaker 8: I actually wrote a story. It's funny story. I wrote
- 34:18Speaker 8: a story about his work ethic and everything. Like this
- 34:21Speaker 8: off season he was working with the hitting coaches. He
- 34:23Speaker 8: would call in texts like I'm coming to the field.
- 34:26Speaker 8: I want to be able to improve my game. So
- 34:29Speaker 8: the day that I wrote that story and it published
- 34:31Speaker 8: was the day that he got caught came in for oversleeping.
- 34:34Speaker 8: So I was like, oh man, you kind of snaked
- 34:36Speaker 8: me a little bit because I'm writing about how great
- 34:39Speaker 8: you are as a teammate. People love you, like you.
- 34:42Speaker 8: But his work ethic is really unique. When he first
- 34:44Speaker 8: came up last year, he went to every picture starter
- 34:47Speaker 8: reliever and was like, what do you like to throw?
- 34:49Speaker 8: What's your where do you like to me to catch
- 34:51Speaker 8: the set up? I want to take some time and
- 34:53Speaker 8: sit with you. So they all love and they understand
- 34:57Speaker 8: that he made a mistake, and even his teammates they
- 35:00Speaker 8: even joke about it. Now. I don't know if you
- 35:02Speaker 8: guys notice, but they did the sleeping Steph Curry emoji
- 35:06Speaker 8: when he hit he got on basically a double right
- 35:08Speaker 8: after he was oversleeping. Jack Casveong gave him the nickname
- 35:11Speaker 8: the Big Snows. So they they're all taking in his stride.
- 35:16Speaker 8: It's a they make him making, like I guess, a
- 35:19Speaker 8: fun nature out of it. But they understand that, yes,
- 35:21Speaker 8: he made a mistake and because he made a mistake,
- 35:23Speaker 8: he can't do that again and he's gonna learn from it.
- 35:25Speaker 8: But his teammates got his back, the coaches got his back,
- 35:28Speaker 8: and they really are have high hopes for Carter Jensen
- 35:32Speaker 8: and he's proven it on the field.
- 35:35Speaker 1: That story is the story inside the story. Jalen Thompson
- 35:39Speaker 1: writing an article about Carter Jensen's work ethic that's so good.
- 35:45Speaker 4: Maybe he worked so hard he couldn't get up.
- 35:47Speaker 7: Yeah, he was.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Up all night, studying up all nights. Right, that's the
- 35:55Speaker 4: ways you can spend the times.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It just works perfectly, and sometimes it just works so terribly.
- 36:02Speaker 1: But that's fun, right, You got to laugh it off,
- 36:04Speaker 1: like we're not doing brain science, we're talking sports. So
- 36:09Speaker 1: did you get a good laugh out of that when
- 36:10Speaker 1: the timing was so ironic?
- 36:13Speaker 8: Yes, I did. It was it was like in the press,
- 36:16Speaker 8: boss Eer was like, man, you just wrote this story
- 36:18Speaker 8: about this guy and then he's going to oversleep. It was.
- 36:21Speaker 8: It was pretty funny. But I even went up to
- 36:24Speaker 8: him and like I told him, like, I appreciate you
- 36:27Speaker 8: standing up for that and answering those questions that we
- 36:30Speaker 8: had after that happened, because he didn't have to really
- 36:34Speaker 8: do that, Like I mean, as a young player, he
- 36:37Speaker 8: could just own the mistake and never said anything to
- 36:40Speaker 8: the media. But he did. He stood up. He was upright,
- 36:42Speaker 8: and that gave a lot of respect, you know that
- 36:45Speaker 8: he was able to do that, and I think a
- 36:46Speaker 8: lot of his teammates saw that and gave him respect too.
- 36:49Speaker 8: But yeah, just writing that story, I was like, man,
- 36:52Speaker 8: if he would have just waited a couple more days.
- 36:55Speaker 8: I have to be in the clear. But you know,
- 36:57Speaker 8: it is what it is.
- 36:59Speaker 7: I love it. I love it.
- 37:00Speaker 4: That's all right.
- 37:01Speaker 5: It's like now, it's like when I come to Kansas City,
- 37:04Speaker 5: I see Jaalen. I'm doing a Royals game. He big
- 37:05Speaker 5: leagues me.
- 37:06Speaker 4: So at least Carlo Jensen didn't do that to you, Jim.
- 37:09Speaker 8: Ay j don't dude, man, you know that's not me.
- 37:12Speaker 8: I give you all that.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I gotta imagine. I mean, Jalen, you've got a great smile.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Like you see Jalen at the park. It's it's a
- 37:21Speaker 1: big it's a big hug.
- 37:23Speaker 7: Hello.
- 37:24Speaker 5: But can I ask a quick question Carlos and Stevens.
- 37:26Speaker 5: He's on the I l with a broken, bruised foot
- 37:29Speaker 5: broke what was it? Was a game in Atlanta, obviously,
- 37:32Speaker 5: but was it a foot?
- 37:33Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, it was a it was a bone contusing,
- 37:37Speaker 8: it was a bruise. Basically, he got hit in his
- 37:40Speaker 8: in his leg, his foot areas ankle right, and he
- 37:44Speaker 8: he still working his way back. He was dealing with
- 37:47Speaker 8: I think he got like sick for a little bit.
- 37:49Speaker 8: So he had to overcome like a sickness and now
- 37:52Speaker 8: he's back throwing he's in the clubhouse, he's walking around.
- 37:55Speaker 8: Everything seems to be fine. The roles just had to
- 37:58Speaker 8: get him back to pitching. Even before he got hit
- 38:02Speaker 8: with the line drive off the foot, his velocity was
- 38:04Speaker 8: really down between ninety and ninety two for hours fastball.
- 38:08Speaker 8: It just didn't look like Carlos the Stevez that we
- 38:11Speaker 8: all know. So for him, it's just a matter of
- 38:15Speaker 8: getting back in games, getting healthy again, and having that
- 38:18Speaker 8: velocity tick back up. Because if Carlos the Stevens can
- 38:21Speaker 8: be back to being the closer that he was when
- 38:23Speaker 8: he led the league in saves last year with forty
- 38:25Speaker 8: two and being an All Star, that might help the
- 38:29Speaker 8: bullpen kind of get everyone back into their designated roles
- 38:32Speaker 8: because right now, if you look at how the roles play,
- 38:35Speaker 8: if the starters are not going seven innings, which they
- 38:38Speaker 8: have been doing, there is a gap between the starters
- 38:42Speaker 8: and then the rest of the game. And if you're
- 38:45Speaker 8: not going to Lucas erseg or Matt Strong, who do
- 38:48Speaker 8: you go to. Everyone else in that bullpen has not
- 38:51Speaker 8: been good, and that's just putting it lightly and they
- 38:55Speaker 8: have to be better. So maybe getting the healthy Carlos
- 38:58Speaker 8: Estebus will help fix that he's been out.
- 39:01Speaker 7: For a while now.
- 39:02Speaker 1: He only made the one appearance with you know back
- 39:04Speaker 1: in late March, so yeah, he's got to figure it
- 39:07Speaker 1: out with I agree with you. I don't know if
- 39:10Speaker 1: a bruised foot is going to hold you out for
- 39:13Speaker 1: six to eight weeks. So I never want to accuse
- 39:15Speaker 1: anyone of fans of my l that doesn't exist in baseball.
- 39:18Speaker 7: Never.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I was never on it, You were never on it.
- 39:21Speaker 1: But we love Carlos. Dude, get your vlow back at
- 39:25Speaker 1: your stuff up and.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Then get to him and Hamma kamak whatever they.
- 39:29Speaker 7: Do exactly the celebration.
- 39:31Speaker 8: The dragon ball z, a.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Whatever whatever, nerds, it is not a not a track
- 39:39Speaker 5: ball Z. I don't even know. We were laughing with
- 39:45Speaker 5: Carlos about that in spring training.
- 39:46Speaker 4: I asked him about I don't.
- 39:47Speaker 7: Know, no, but it looks good. It's a great meme. Jalen,
- 39:51Speaker 7: you're the man. Thank you. Great to catch up with
- 39:53Speaker 7: you and we'll see you soon.
- 39:56Speaker 8: Thank you so much, guys. Talk to you guys later.
