- 0:01Hour number two Miller and Condon welcome back Iowa sports
- 0:04radio network John Bowen camp he was part of the presser
- 0:08yesterday. Ben McCollum, Iowa men's
- 0:10basketball coach met the media yesterday Bowen camp with the
- 0:13recap coming up with that toward the bottom of the hour.
- 0:16Another keyword as well. About 1520 minutes from right
- 0:20now, but Cappy joins the program.
- 0:22David Kaplan ESPN 1000 his YouTube channel with plenty of
- 0:26views. Captain, you get more people
- 0:29tuning into your your recap after a disheartening loss or a
- 0:33big win. What are your numbers say?
- 0:37That's a really good question and great to be with you guys.
- 0:40I would say like a great, great win.
- 0:44Like if they win tonight with a, you know, a home run in the
- 0:48ninth inning, I will get a ton of views.
- 0:52But a messed up game like last night, we also get a ton.
- 0:55It's the ones where they win like they beat the Pirates 3 to
- 1:002. People are like.
- 1:02That was just OK. We get good views, we always get
- 1:05good views, but it's not anywhere like the two extreme.
- 1:10I bet, and you certainly had that yesterday.
- 1:12What was the PCA blowback like? A not forgetting how many outs
- 1:16And I'm anxious to pick your brain on this because I'm
- 1:18watching the game last night and I couldn't believe you tried to
- 1:20lay down a bunt. And that's unless Kyle Tucker
- 1:24missed a sign there was a safety squeeze or a suicide squeeze.
- 1:27I don't believe that that's what that that situation called for.
- 1:31But I was blown away A by him losing track of the outs.
- 1:34I know what happens, but come on.
- 1:36And then the the bunches blood just had me pulling my hair out.
- 1:39Was that called for? Did he do it on his own?
- 1:43So he called for the bun himself.
- 1:45He did it on his own and they Craig after the game was asked
- 1:49by Taylor McGregor from Marquee was that a call from the bench.
- 1:53He said no, that was not a call from the bench.
- 1:56That was something Pete did on his own and it was just poor
- 2:00execution. Now, you and I will disagree on
- 2:04the premise of him doing it because, look, you're a he's a
- 2:10fast guy. He should be able to know how to
- 2:13bunk. You're a Major League Baseball
- 2:15player. You should be able to get a bunk
- 2:16down it. He unfortunately is not good at
- 2:19that part of the game. He's great at other stuff.
- 2:22He's a lousy bunter. But in the 7th inning, you're
- 2:26down a run. You're not playing well the last
- 2:29few days. You need a win like a starving
- 2:32man needs a ham sandwich. And guess what?
- 2:35If he gets that bunk down anywhere other than back to the
- 2:38pitcher, Kyle Tucker, if you watch the replay, is reading it
- 2:42the whole way. Not a suicide.
- 2:44It's not even a safety squeeze and he's reading it.
- 2:48As soon as he goes sees it go back to the pitcher, he retreats
- 2:51over to 3rd and they gun PCA out and Suzuki gets over to 2nd.
- 2:57If he just does his job and lays A bunt down, the game's tied.
- 3:03So I had no issue with him doing that.
- 3:06And with his wheels. If it's a really good bunt, he
- 3:08might beat it out anyway. But you cannot lay a bunt down
- 3:13like that and push it right back to the pitcher.
- 3:15Can't do it. It's been a bad half week plus
- 3:18now for this squad going back to the weekend, the runs, flying
- 3:21out of the field against Seattle and Wrigley.
- 3:24Is it panic time? Is it concern time?
- 3:26Is it it's just the lull of a baseball season?
- 3:28How do you see what's happening right now?
- 3:31I don't. I'm not panicked.
- 3:33I was ticked off. I despise the Cardinals.
- 3:37I loathe them. But I'm not panicked by this
- 3:41team at all because I do believe Jed will make one or two good
- 3:45moves, maybe more than that before the deadline.
- 3:48But what bothers me is to look at the line up like I'll do
- 3:53every afternoon when it drops. I go on the MLBF, I look and I'm
- 3:57like Gansby Swanson hitting 4th for what reason?
- 4:02And then last night after hitting fourth on Tuesday,
- 4:06Wednesday they have him in the five hole and of course he makes
- 4:09the last out of the game. Great play by Arenado, but
- 4:12Dansby Swanson should never ever have been up in that situation.
- 4:17Hitting $1.54 with men in scoring position.
- 4:22That isn't good. So why would you not have Nico
- 4:25Horner there? And the other issue is you're a
- 4:28bat short because Matt Shaw looks horrible at the plate.
- 4:31Looks very good defensively, but what we thought was fixed, it's
- 4:36caught up with him. He's not very good at the plate.
- 4:39So do you go out and try and trade for Alex Bregman?
- 4:44Do you try and trade for Eugenio Suarez?
- 4:46I don't know who's going to be available, but if Boston's
- 4:49basically waving the white flag by trading Rafael Devers, then
- 4:54let's go see if Bregman is healthy.
- 4:57Let's get him over here. Yeah, because Bregman apparently
- 4:59is. The rumor is he's going to opt
- 5:01out after this year anyways in Boston.
- 5:04We'll see. What about Nico Horner?
- 5:05Capo is good to see, see him finally put one over the fence.
- 5:08His first home run of the year, which is kind of surprising.
- 5:10Not that he's a big power guy, but you know, he's got, you
- 5:13would have thought that, you know, 8/10/12 a year, but it was
- 5:16good to see that. Do you want him moved up further
- 5:19in the lineup just because you know he's his contact?
- 5:22Usually make contact with the ball?
- 5:25I do because I don't want Dansby Swanson there.
- 5:28He's a very streaky hitter. I know he's got, you know, good
- 5:31pop. He's probably second or third in
- 5:33home runs by shortstops. I think Lindor's probably got to
- 5:37be #1 but he is a very streaky hitter, excellent fielder, good
- 5:43base runner, good guy. But guess what?
- 5:45With men in scoring position, he's been horrible all year,
- 5:49$1.54 is awful. So I do not want to see him
- 5:55anywhere near the heart of the line up.
- 5:57I want to see him tonight in the seven or 8 hole.
- 6:01You want to get back to a more prominent spot, then earn your
- 6:05way back because right now, dude, you suck.
- 6:09Ben Brown got sent down here. He'll be a re learning, maybe a
- 6:13third pitch that would be helpful.
- 6:15Maybe cutting a rug at Denny Arthur's.
- 6:16What do you want to see from Ben Brown and is the best course for
- 6:19this year him to become a bullpen arm?
- 6:23Yeah, unless you tell me that Jed's not going to go add
- 6:27multiple starters or at least one high end starter.
- 6:31We get a high end starter back tomorrow.
- 6:33Imanaga Kyon has got to get fixed because he had a run of
- 6:38nine of his last 10 starts were quality starts and then the last
- 6:42two he's got a batting practice pitcher.
- 6:45He's been horrible. So he's not going anywhere but
- 6:50with Imonaga back and then you got Matt Boyd going tonight and
- 6:54now no more Ben Brown, you got Cade Horton.
- 6:57I mean where you got to add another arm here.
- 7:00You got to go get an elite high end arm whether that is staying
- 7:04the off Contra whether that I wouldn't call him high end, but
- 7:08he's good. Edward Cabrera from the Marlins
- 7:11might be available. So unless Boston's going to say
- 7:15you know what, we're blowing everything up.
- 7:17We'll trade you Garrett Crochet and they're not going to.
- 7:21I don't know where you're going to get these arms because
- 7:23Arizona is still in the race. Why would they blow things up
- 7:27and trade Gallon and Kelly and the Cubs can't wait until the
- 7:31deadline to at least address 1 move and we I may not know
- 7:35anything on Boston, Atlanta, the health of Chris Sale, the
- 7:41Arizona Diamondbacks until closer to end of July.
- 7:44In Boston says they're going to be buyers.
- 7:46I'll believe it when I see it. You're right, Colin Ray has to,
- 7:50I mean, he's he's done what he's been asked.
- 7:52It was probably better than anybody anticipated.
- 7:54But so we had Birchy on earlier. He thinks it's going to be on
- 7:58Casey that everybody's calling for, He said by Steros as well.
- 8:01But he expects Casey to be the guy, maybe the main piece in any
- 8:05trade. Is that what you're hearing
- 8:07from, you know, from Chicago that when they get to, when
- 8:11they're, you know, when they call and ask that they are the
- 8:14player that most people want back?
- 8:15Is either one of those two? Yeah, I hear Owen Casey and I
- 8:20also hear that people like Jackson Wiggins the pitcher, so,
- 8:26and he's got really good stuff and I hear the organization is
- 8:29super high on him. So, you know, if you look at
- 8:32Jackson Wiggins, his numbers are really good at AA, really good.
- 8:36He's a big guy, like 652-3240. Well, if you have a high end
- 8:43scouting report on him where that dude can be a 12 in our
- 8:47rotation within two years, boy, I'd be really leery of trading a
- 8:52guy like that. I mean, we saw a guy last night
- 8:55make his debut for the Reds. He was drafted last June.
- 8:58So if these guys are coming this quick, I'd rather keep him.
- 9:02But again, you're trying to win a World Series, so sometimes you
- 9:06have to give up players you don't want to part with.
- 9:09You mentioned a couple of third base targets.
- 9:11What else are you hearing kind of in the rumor mill as it
- 9:13pertains starting pitching obviously at the top of the
- 9:15list, but what are you kind of hearing right now?
- 9:17Some guys that the Cubs are scouting, targeting.
- 9:21Yeah, they, they're monitoring the Arizona situation.
- 9:24They are monitoring the, the Marlin situation very, very
- 9:29closely. Texas Rangers situation.
- 9:32They have, you know, a handful of interesting arms.
- 9:35I don't think they're trading Jacob the ground, but you've got
- 9:38a Valdi that's down there. You've got Tyler Malley is
- 9:41another one that's there. And then they're looking at
- 9:43Pittsburgh where Mitch Keller and David Bednar could be
- 9:47available. They're not trading Paul scheme.
- 9:50I I somebody tweeted, what would we have to give up for Paul
- 9:53schemes? The franchise.
- 9:54Literally don't have enough in your organization to get Paul
- 9:58scheme. You literally don't.
- 10:00Yep, the ballpark and the surrounding areas.
- 10:02Maybe he's a easily no doubt about that.
- 10:05David Kaplan joins us in cheering stone of Iowa sponsor.
- 10:08So cap you just think that you know every team goes through
- 10:11them. I mean we've we've seen good
- 10:13teams in the past, really good teams.
- 10:15World Series teams have a kind. I'm not saying they're going to
- 10:17win the World Series, but they're, you know, on that short
- 10:21list of teams that you think can this is just a, you know, it's a
- 10:24long year. They'll get, they'll work
- 10:26themselves out of it or cause for alarm.
- 10:28What's kind of the consensus? They'll work themselves out of
- 10:31it. Let's not forget the 2016 Cubs
- 10:33were a sub 500 team in July and in June they went on a run where
- 10:40they lost like six of eight and like 9 of 11.
- 10:45And so they had a good four week spell in there where you went
- 10:51that team's going to win the World Series and then they
- 10:54righted the ship, they got Chapman.
- 10:57See you later. Thanks for coming.
- 10:58And they won the World Series. So again, I don't know if this
- 11:01team is as good as that, but I do think as long as Jed is
- 11:05engaged on multiple fronts, you add to his pitching staff and
- 11:10then perhaps address third base, where like if you get rid of
- 11:14Bruhan or Birdie and you move Matt Shaw to the utility roll
- 11:21and then go get, let's call it Eugenio Suarez, who's in the
- 11:25final year of his contract. Now you're a totally different
- 11:28team because you may not have this youthful, really
- 11:32outstanding defender. 1/3 you got a guy with 45 home run thump
- 11:38in your lineup in Suarez. So we know this year for the
- 11:42Bears, it's going to be all about Caleb Williams.
- 11:43I mean, that's where the conversation is going to start
- 11:45seemingly every time that they come up.
- 11:47I do have a question about the backup spot.
- 11:49They went out and signed Case Keenum.
- 11:51Tyson Baigent's a guy that I think competent backup, still a
- 11:55ton of upside. I'm sure there's other teams in
- 11:58the league that would like him. What is the game plan at the
- 12:00quarterback position? Is it to keep all three of those
- 12:02guys active throughout the course of the season?
- 12:04Obviously debating about rosters and injuries and the like, but
- 12:07is that the game plan? A quarterback for the Bears?
- 12:10Yeah, I don't see a scenario we're not that where they're not
- 12:14having those three guys all there.
- 12:16I think Tyson Beijing a really good player and I think they
- 12:20like him. And so I think he'll be the two.
- 12:23The Case Keenan was brought in here and I think he understands
- 12:27his role at this stage of his career and, you know, upper 30s
- 12:30age wise, he's helping the mentor Caleb Williams.
- 12:34And then, you know, it's a great insurance policy to have and
- 12:37also to help mentor Tyson Beijing.
- 12:39So yeah, I mean, it's Caleb's job.
- 12:42I believe Beijing is locked in as the two and Case will be the
- 12:46three. Of the two rookies on the
- 12:49offensive side of the ball, tight end receiver Bertner
- 12:53Loveland, who has a bigger impact this year on the team.
- 12:56Close to Loveland, it's not close.
- 12:58I keep hearing from people that are around the situation that
- 13:04Burden, not the toughest cat in the world, like amazingly
- 13:08talented, does not know yet what it means to play through nagging
- 13:13injury and what being a professional football player is
- 13:19all about. Like being a Pro Football
- 13:22player. The people listening are like,
- 13:24what do you mean they have no idea, idea the injuries and the
- 13:29pain that these guys play through.
- 13:32And when I saw like Kevin Jenkins, he came out with a
- 13:35Stinger and they've got doctors helping him off the field on a
- 13:39cart and the whole deal and all. And Cruz said, dude, I got the
- 13:44only of those I got and I stayed in the game.
- 13:46He said you take your mind to places you can't believe you're
- 13:49going, but you find a way to be out there for the next snap.
- 13:53And that's not denigrating Kevin.
- 13:55Everybody processes pain and stuff like that in a different
- 14:00way. Luther Burton, I don't think
- 14:03it's to that point yet. You know, everyone's thrilled
- 14:05that he's here and that's great. There's also a reason why the
- 14:09guy entered last season as the number one receiver in the draft
- 14:13and was still on the board when the Bears were picking at 38.
- 14:17With that, is there a trade market for Cole comment,
- 14:20something that I mean outside of a six round draft pick with
- 14:24Loveland coming in this year, what could you see in that
- 14:26market and would it make sense or does it make more sense in
- 14:29the Ben Johnson offense to keep both those guys around?
- 14:32Yeah, I don't see a market for him, ABI.
- 14:35Don't think the bears would do that because there's no savings
- 14:38to them. Salary cap wise, I think it's
- 14:40$100,000 saving on dead cap money, that's it.
- 14:45Next year it's several million. So if you're asking me to make a
- 14:49wager, I'll bet you that he's here opening day.
- 14:53I'll bet you he's not here next year on opening day.
- 14:57Capital One More on baseball About the other team, the White
- 15:00Sox the Kettle Marte situation from last night.
- 15:03The fan obviously just a disgrace that you know, somebody
- 15:07would stoop to that low. What's kind of been the fallout?
- 15:11Has Major League Baseball got involved?
- 15:13I know that the White Sox are going to they're going to ban
- 15:15him from the ballpark likely forever.
- 15:17But that that was that was I mean, I was unfortunate.
- 15:20I felt AFL bad for Marte and just be you know that this is
- 15:24the world we're living in now. What what does MLB get involved?
- 15:27Are they going to wait to see how the White Sox handle things?
- 15:31I don't think MLB gets involved. The White Sox have already
- 15:33banned this fan for life from the ballpark this morning, and
- 15:38then they're playing right now. It just started and they
- 15:42acknowledged him in his first at bat.
- 15:44I didn't see it. I'm going to go in and look
- 15:46because I'm talking to you guys. But they were going to
- 15:49acknowledge him on the scoreboard and then we were
- 15:53encouraging, as was the other sports station in town,
- 15:58encouraging a standing ovation from whatever kind of crowd that
- 16:02they're going to have when he comes to the plate.
- 16:05It because I'm speaking as a native Chicagoan.
- 16:10I want that guy to know AI got a lot of friends, my brother, my
- 16:14business partner who are die hard Sox fans.
- 16:16That is not representative of what the White Sox fan is A&B.
- 16:21That is not how we treat people in Chicago.
- 16:24And because there was some jackaloon in the stands yelling
- 16:28about his mother, who was killed in a car accident that reduced
- 16:32him to sobbing on the field. Everybody processes grief in a
- 16:38different way where something like that might fire me up more.
- 16:44Some people, they literally can't handle it.
- 16:48And he couldn't. And he was crying, and his
- 16:50manager was hugging him and consoling him.
- 16:54And, I mean, she died in 2017, I believe.
- 16:58And so he said this is still a horrific thing in his mind.
- 17:03The mind is a difficult thing to understand.
- 17:07And so if it's affected him that way last night, what type of a
- 17:13lunatic goes to a dark place like that and says something
- 17:17like that that can tell Marte that, that tells me all I need
- 17:21to know about that human being. And I said on the radio today,
- 17:24I'd like that guy's name because I want to out him on radio on
- 17:28YouTube, and I hope his bosses see it and they fire him from
- 17:31his job because what he did was despicable.
- 17:35Tonight NBA draft round one as they have separated now over 2
- 17:39days. Bulls sit at #12 Who is the
- 17:42apple of your icappy? Who do you want the Bulls to
- 17:44draft tonight? Well, if they can get up and get
- 17:47Ace Bailey, that would be really intriguing from Rutgers.
- 17:51Does he want to play there? Well, reportedly he wants to
- 17:55play only in a big market. New York, Chicago, LA.
- 17:59He wouldn't even work out for Philly.
- 18:01Which? That shocked me.
- 18:03He's not working out for anybody.
- 18:05He's trying to drive himself down the board so that he can
- 18:09end up in a destination where he feels is a big market that can
- 18:13build his brand. The whole deal.
- 18:15I don't understand who counsels these players.
- 18:18You're talking to a guy who scouted four years in the
- 18:21league, and I would go away from some guys blown away at how well
- 18:28they were handling the draft process.
- 18:30Like, boy, that guy gets it. That guy is sharp.
- 18:34Look how he carries himself. And they put on all the airs,
- 18:38the way they dressed, the way they shook your hand, looked you
- 18:41in the eye. And then there were other guys
- 18:43you're like, do you know you're interviewing for a multi
- 18:46$1,000,000 job? It's it's literally amazing to
- 18:49me how poor the guidance is some of these guys get.
- 18:52But Ace Bailey's a wildly talented kid out of Rutgers,
- 18:556-7. I mean, the Bulls could use
- 18:58talent like that. I just can't believe he's going
- 19:01to be on the board at 12. We will talk to you in seven
- 19:03days, Kappa. Thank you buddy, as always.
- 19:05I look forward to it and let's find a way to win a damn
- 19:08baseball game tonight all. Right, preaching the choir.

- 20:36you surprised? McCollum said he's still
- 20:38shopping around, still wants one more player on that roster.
- 20:41Where's he going to go? Well, he mentioned international
- 20:44and that's kind of the speculation that's been out
- 20:46there. You know the different.
- 20:47Try to figure that part of it out.
- 20:48Have. You heard?
- 20:49Are they kicking the tires if they got somebody in mind?
- 20:51Well, you know, there was that De Ritter kid that we talked
- 20:54about a month and a half ago, that same destined for Virginia.
- 20:57Then maybe that was is off. That isn't going to be eligible.
- 21:00Apparently he showed up again last week in Virginia.
- 21:02So that went off. But I think they're still
- 21:04sniffing around. The one part though, of the
- 21:06quote that I was most interested, he talked about guys
- 21:09possibly reclassifying and all of a sudden if you get a guy
- 21:13that would be a high school senior this year but
- 21:15reclassifies and goes a year early, if maybe that's something
- 21:18or if it's just something he said because that is a route you
- 21:20can go. Is there a name that's behind
- 21:22it? So I want to dig into that one a
- 21:24little bit more with Bowen Camp. You'll join Trent next.
- 21:27I got a duck out, but Trent and John will talk Hawkeyes when we
- 21:31come back tomorrow. 12:30 Bill Seals is going to be here.
- 21:34Are we going to do anything on the draft?
- 21:36Tomorrow, yeah, Chris Monster is going to join us.
- 21:38Also our old friend College BB News than an NFL draft scout or
- 21:43NBA draft scout pretty good too. Yes, yeah, I really like Chris.
- 21:46We'll also talk. I want to talk to him.
- 21:47He's based in Minnesota about the Timberwolves offseason as
- 21:51they were rumblings about Durant or and said no, that's not a
- 21:54place that he's going to go. Obviously ended up in Houston
- 21:56over the weekend, but what the offseason looks like and kind of
- 21:59going forward with the Timberwolves roster.
- 22:01Yeah, fascinating. By the way, if Speaking of Bulls
- 22:04draft, there was their first round pick 4th overall in what
- 22:06year was it, 2001? He spent a couple of Fridays ago
- 22:09at Circus Sports. Oh really, Marcus Pfizer was
- 22:13there at at Circa with buddy Chris Shipley.
- 22:16Good stuff that that's coming up next.
- 22:19John Bowen Camp joins Trent as that we take you until 2:00 here
- 22:23on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:28Trey kind of back with you as Miller and kind of continues on
- 22:31the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Ken had to duck out a little bit
- 22:34early today for his other job. He'll be back with us tomorrow,
- 22:37though, at noon. And instead we welcome in the
- 22:42self-proclaimed wise owl on the Iowa Hawkeye beat.
- 22:45He is John Bowenkamp from The Associated Press, Iowa college
- 22:49basketball news and a whole lot more.
- 22:51What's happening, John? Not.
- 22:53Much. I'm doing well.
- 22:55So yesterday a little media availability.
- 22:58You guys got some open practice last week, Ben McCollum working
- 23:02the masses, right, and working you guys on the beat a little
- 23:04bit and and being able to see this team, talk to some guys at
- 23:07building those relationships, all very important as you look
- 23:10to rebuild this program. I'll back up before we kind of
- 23:13get into a few INS and outs and going back to the hiring,
- 23:17getting Ben McCullum to come here.
- 23:19As we found out more and more about his background, being born
- 23:22in Iowa City, growing up such a big Hawkeye fan in the way that
- 23:25it feels like he's really endeared himself well to the
- 23:28program. And then he took it a step
- 23:30further and and made a little subtle jab to our friends up in
- 23:33AVEs. Feels like he is pushing all the
- 23:36right buttons here in the first couple months on the job.
- 23:39Yeah. I mean, you know, we and we
- 23:41talked about that back when he was hired and I said, you know,
- 23:44you always want to win the press conference, but you're going to
- 23:47have to win on the court obviously.
- 23:49But he has not only won the press conference, he has won the
- 23:53last couple months in terms of putting together this roster,
- 23:57you know, going out, you know, to the I club events, which for
- 24:00some reason they don't have one in southeast Iowa, which I'll
- 24:05call that the complaint for another day.
- 24:07But but, but anyway, but I mean he's out there, you know, and
- 24:11he's and he's and then again, the little jab yesterday at the
- 24:16rival. I just have really liked what he
- 24:21has done. And you know, and I mean,
- 24:23obviously, you know, he had a lot of right, you know, he had a
- 24:26lot of right buttons the day that that he was hired and he
- 24:29mentioned guys that, you know, you can tell he understood the
- 24:33history of Iowa basketball. You know, it's easy to say BJ
- 24:36Armstrong and you know, those kind of guys.
- 24:38But when you're bringing up Val Barnes, his name and some of his
- 24:41little, you know, the history of the of the of the program.
- 24:44So I like what he has done. I, you know, and I've said this
- 24:48before, I like this roster he's put together in listening to the
- 24:52these guys last week and this week.
- 24:53I like what they're saying of, of how this summer is going.
- 24:57And, and, and I mean, so I think where they're at right now is a
- 25:00really good place, you know, as, as you get in the later into the
- 25:05summer and get into the fall. You look at this roster and you
- 25:08can definitely see that there's holes that still could be
- 25:10filled. He talked a little bit about
- 25:12that. I'm searching in the market.
- 25:14I think the part of that quote though that maybe open my eyes a
- 25:17little bit more, he was talking about the international market.
- 25:20We know they've kicked the tires on a few different guys out
- 25:22there, some other ones that might be out there as though the
- 25:24portals pretty well picked over at this point.
- 25:26But he also mentioned reclassifying.
- 25:28Did you take it as him just mentioning different avenues
- 25:32that they can go or do we read into it that maybe they do have
- 25:36somebody in mind that could reclassify and come a year
- 25:39early? I do think it's it was probably
- 25:42just these are all the different avenues available.
- 25:44You know, he mentioned the international play, you know,
- 25:47international players, which, you know, right now, like I
- 25:50always having a problem getting one of their a couple of their
- 25:52players, though, I think, you know, so so I don't know if
- 25:56right now that's a good way to go because you may not be able
- 25:58to get them in, you know, get them in.
- 26:00But you know, I, I mean, obviously there's a lot of ways
- 26:03to go to fill this. And then I said this back when
- 26:06they were looking to fill the roster.
- 26:08I said, you know, there's you know, they kept talking about
- 26:11transfer portal. I'm like, you know, there's
- 26:12other places and you know, and maybe he and he didn't mention
- 26:15it yesterday. Maybe they look at a JUCO guy
- 26:17that's still available and, and trust me, there are some of
- 26:20those guys out there and you know, they may be looking for a
- 26:24certain piece, you know, and and they may be looking for some
- 26:28size. Everybody wants size, you know,
- 26:30on their team. So that might be kind of hard to
- 26:32find. But I mean, obviously they're
- 26:34they're going to look for maybe that one last piece of his
- 26:38roster and, and, and he'll look anywhere to find it.
- 26:41One guy that you guys didn't get an opportunity to see last week
- 26:44in the open practice was Alvaro Fulgaris, who's over with one of
- 26:47the Spanish national teams. Heard so many good things and
- 26:51somebody that I talked to that does a lot of scouting out east
- 26:54mentioned that he is going to be a great fit for them.
- 26:56But he's at a typical 5I mean he might be playing power forward.
- 27:00What we saw from Manoa, and I know you watch it a lot of
- 27:02Missouri Valley Conference basketball also is a guy that
- 27:05played 20 minutes a game last year.
- 27:06It's one thing to do it in the NVC, it'll be a different doing
- 27:09it in the Big 10. How equipped are they inside
- 27:11with their bigs? You know, I, I think they're OK.
- 27:15Again, you got to kind of look sometimes around the league and
- 27:18see what everybody else has, you know, and, and, and I think
- 27:21where they're at, I think they're in a pretty good place,
- 27:24but I, I still think they could probably use a little more size.
- 27:27And again, going back to what we were just talking about, maybe
- 27:29that's what they're looking for right now.
- 27:31You know, a a true, you know, really big powerful, you know,
- 27:36inside guy, a big power 4 or a tenner.
- 27:39I don't know how many of those are still out there right now,
- 27:42but I mean, obviously they want to look for something like that.
- 27:46But I do think they're in pretty good shape there.
- 27:48And again, they're going to run the ball, they're going to
- 27:50they're going to they're going to they're going to be getting
- 27:51up and down the court, they're going to be shooting threes,
- 27:54that sort of thing. I don't know necessarily if it's
- 27:57an issue right now. We'll find out when Big 10 play
- 28:00starts. But I think right now, I do
- 28:03think they're in pretty good shape right now.
- 28:05You, I saw Trevin Yorak and that might be a guy that could help
- 28:08out this season, not for long stretches, but can he give them,
- 28:11you know, 1012 minutes a game, something like that.
- 28:13What have you seen out of your rock?
- 28:15The kid from here, W Dewayne Valley.
- 28:17I, you know, I liked what I saw last week.
- 28:19I mean, I, I, I thought he was, he looked, he looked equipped to
- 28:24play the game. If they, you know, and if they
- 28:26needed him for 15 or 20 minutes, he, you know, you with high
- 28:30school guys sometimes when they get in there with the older
- 28:33players and, and he does have a lot of older players in this,
- 28:36you can kind of see that age difference.
- 28:39But I didn't really see that last week.
- 28:41I saw a guy that that, like you said, can give them 10 to 15
- 28:45minutes, do a lot of good things.
- 28:47Obviously he's going to have to get stronger.
- 28:49It is a different game than than what he has played in high
- 28:51school. But again, you've got time to do
- 28:54that and, and listening to the players talk, they really are
- 28:57hitting the weight room. And so, I mean, he'll develop
- 29:00over time, but I do think he's in a really good place right now
- 29:03to start the season that he can be a key part of this rotation.
- 29:08This group, where's your expectations for them right now?
- 29:11When you look at the squad, the way they're constructed, is it
- 29:14an NCAA tournament team or is that even too much hope in your
- 29:17number one? No, I think, I think you know,
- 29:21when you look back to, you know, maybe 5-10 years ago, you know,
- 29:27first year coach is coming in, it's really hard to get to the
- 29:29tournament now it's not. And you look at the guys he's
- 29:33brought in. He brought in six guys from the
- 29:35team that won 31 games and and made it to the tournament, won
- 29:38its conference. These guys know how to win.
- 29:40You added some pieces around them, guys who know how to win.
- 29:43You added some young kids who you know, who have come from
- 29:47winning progress. These guys know how to win, and
- 29:49that is a big deal sometimes with college basketball rosters.
- 29:52I don't think it's out of, you know, and I've said this before,
- 29:55I don't think it's out of the realm to think that they can get
- 29:58the NC tournament finish in that top 8 or 9 in the Big 10.
- 30:02A lot of things have to go right.
- 30:03There's going to have to be some development.
- 30:05There's going to have to be some air base going to have to find
- 30:07their role. You know, you don't want to be
- 30:09searching for that, you know, in the end of December and January.
- 30:12But I do think this this roster is equipped to get them to the
- 30:16NBA tournament. How long they last.
- 30:18I don't know what to Tennessee, but I do think this is a team
- 30:21that can get there. Some news coming down, Matt
- 30:23Norlander from CBS Sports had it that the NCAA is increasing the
- 30:28number of regular season games from 31 to 32.
- 30:31Of course, the hope that goes along with it, it'll lead to
- 30:34more high profile non conference games coming.
- 30:37Anything that you read into this, an extra game, let's hope
- 30:39it's not Mississippi Valley State and it's a match up
- 30:42against Mississippi. It's yeah, I mean, I think
- 30:45that's going to be kind of the hope of doing that.
- 30:48But this is a revenue grab. This is like he said, this is
- 30:51this is power conference teams getting and wanting to get
- 30:54another home game, you know, whether it's against, you know,
- 30:58another power conference team or another cupcake.
- 31:01That's going to depend on the coach.
- 31:03But I do think that that that it is a big deal for this because I
- 31:07do think you're just getting one more game.
- 31:09And, and, and one of the things they brought up is playing a non
- 31:12conference game during the conference schedule.
- 31:15You know, Illinois did that last year and I think they're doing
- 31:18it again this year. A lot of times, you know, that
- 31:21kind of went away. I mean, I remember back in the
- 31:2480s and 90s, you know, Iowa play Duke, you know, and then what?
- 31:28And well, and, and so I think maybe that's kind of what
- 31:32they're wanting this to be, is to play another power conference
- 31:36team in January and February if you've got an open date.
- 31:40And so I, I, yeah. And so I think that's what
- 31:43they're wanting to do with it. Let's hope that is the case.
- 31:46Now from the good news, an extra game.
- 31:47We're not going to argue about that.
- 31:49Extra games in the NCAA tournament expending this thing
- 31:51out to 72 or 76. John, do you read it?
- 31:55A point. This is going to happen kicking
- 31:57and screaming all we want. This is going to happen either
- 32:0072 or 76. I'm afraid it's going to happen
- 32:03because I think they want that Tuesday and Wednesday TV
- 32:07windows. I think they want an all day
- 32:08thing there. But you know, they keep talking.
- 32:11It was so funny to listen to them talk about when they were
- 32:13trying to explain this and they brought up the Indiana State
- 32:16team that didn't make it a couple years ago.
- 32:18And I'm like, you guys aren't doing this to help Indiana
- 32:21State. You know, you're not doing this
- 32:23to help a Valley school. You're doing this to get it, you
- 32:26know, to get a an 18 and 12 Vanderbilt team in, you know, or
- 32:30Ole Miss or somebody like that. It is just, you know, or, or to
- 32:35to lump all those 16 seeds and 15 seeds into that first game.
- 32:40So you're not dealing with them on the weekend, you know, the
- 32:42OVC champion and the Summit League champion and making them
- 32:46play an extra game. That's where I think this is
- 32:49going with this. I don't think it's, you know, to
- 32:51out of the goodness of their heart to help those mid major
- 32:54teams that are really good. One football question for you
- 32:57and just in general as we go through this offseason, you guys
- 33:00get availability, got Big 10, then media days, Iowa media days
- 33:03will lead up to the season. It's a long build up to get
- 33:06there. Just where you sit on June 25th
- 33:09when you look at this football team for this season, 2025.
- 33:12Only kind of where you are when you look overall at the program.
- 33:16Probably better than what a lot of people think.
- 33:19I mean, I, I, I and, and, and it's in my mind that what makes
- 33:23that, what makes me say that is Mark Gronowski.
- 33:26You know, I mean, I know where he came from.
- 33:28I know how he can play. And I just think this is their
- 33:32best quarterback they've had in a while.
- 33:34And if they can protect him, and I think they can, if he's got
- 33:38the pieces around him and the receivers and then running
- 33:41backs, which I think he does, I think this is a very good
- 33:44offense. You know, to me, the biggest
- 33:46question is, you know, what, where, who kind of emerges on
- 33:49defense right now? Who's that Jay Higgins?
- 33:51Who's that Nick Jackson? You know, those kind of guys.
- 33:54But offensively, I think they're in a really good place right
- 33:57now. And getting back to the
- 33:59quarterback thing, I think they're in a really good place
- 34:02in, you know, and not just the starting quarterback, but the
- 34:05backup quarterback. And so I just, I just think this
- 34:08offense is in a better place now in under Tim Lester and I just
- 34:12that to me gives me some confidence about this team.
- 34:15You still like watching the Dodgers play?
- 34:18Oh, it's just fun, you know? I mean, it wouldn't be when you
- 34:21get to watch excellent night and night out.
- 34:24You know, you can't. You got to do it.
- 34:25And I mean, it's starting to become a runaway now.
- 34:28There's a cream. I always think cream comes to
- 34:30the top. Cream is there now in June.
- 34:34Oh boy, it was. It's a different life than I
- 34:37certainly leave. Hey, Jack Dreyer, he got he was
- 34:39the opener of what, last night of the season?
- 34:42What are you seeing from the former Hawkeye and the Johnston
- 34:44Dragon, Jack Dreyer? He's been really good.
- 34:47I mean, I mean, he you know, he's been that kind of he's been
- 34:51that middle guy when they've had to do these bullpen games.
- 34:54He's been the starter and I think that's kind of a good
- 34:57experience thing for him. But you know, he's got a couple
- 35:01of bad outings here there, but on a consistent basis he's been
- 35:04really good and he's been that middle guy that that they've
- 35:08needed and he's been a surprise. I mean, at the beginning of the
- 35:12year, I mean, you doing back in February, you didn't think much
- 35:16of his, his, his chances and he's got the chance.
- 35:18He's maybe most of it. He's got good stuff.
- 35:20He throws strikes and and and that's what you want out of
- 35:24that, out of that position and what he does.
- 35:27Fast forward to the middle of October, you and your Dodgers
- 35:32are back in the NLCS. On the other side, I'm going to
- 35:35give you 2 options. Either team from the East, the
- 35:38Phillies or the Mets, or a team from the West, the Giants or the
- 35:42Padres. Who would you rather see in an
- 35:44NLCS? I mean, I'm not scared of any of
- 35:48them, but I just, I would rather play the NL East teams because I
- 35:52hate playing the Padres of their, of their little brother
- 35:55act and the Giants or the Giants, you know, and, and, and
- 35:59it's like I don't want seven games of, of the little brother
- 36:03act. It's like I would rather play
- 36:04the Mets, Billy straight up. And I mean, there's no rivalry
- 36:08there. It's just baseball and it's, you
- 36:10know, and it's been all the other stuff that goes along with
- 36:13it wouldn't be there, but that's what I want.
- 36:15I'm gonna be anybody from the NL Central, so I'm not worried
- 36:17about. That oh, look at that, shots
- 36:19fired and John Bowenkamp saying that Padres and the Giants are
- 36:24little brothers. I think you're scared of them.
- 36:25I think that's what it. Is I'm not worried about today.
- 36:27I don't say that about the Giants.
- 36:28The Padres are little bread. Okay.
- 36:31Hey John, appreciate the time as always.
- 36:33Good catching up with you. Thanks.
- 36:36Have a good one. You too.
- 36:37John Boacamp from The Associated Press Check it in with us.
- 36:39Iowa College hoops.com and the AP is where you can find John's
- 36:44work. We'll take our final time out,
- 36:45come back on the other side and look to stay hot.
- 36:48Another winning night last night with my picks of the day
- 36:51presented by Circa Sports. 3 in one yesterday.
- 36:54Back to the well again tonight. My picks coming up next.
- 36:57As we come back, it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 37:00Network. A cap on things on a Wednesday.
- 37:03It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports to Radio network.
- 37:06Thanks for joining us today And each and every day throughout
- 37:09the summer months making a way up to football season.
- 37:12So we talked about at the top of the show with Ken starting to
- 37:15get excited, starting to dig in a little bit more.
- 37:17I mentioned I found a couple of point spreads last night,
- 37:20including Iowa, Penn State, Hawkeyes getting 10 1/2 in
- 37:24Kinnock Stadium. FanDuel has Iowa favored in the
- 37:27side Hawk game. DraftKings has a back the other
- 37:30way. A one other line though of note
- 37:32in college football, the Iowa Nebraska game, Black Friday
- 37:37course end of the season and I was a little bit surprised as
- 37:40Iowa at Nebraska, the Hawkeyes in that one are currently let me
- 37:46find it once again. 2 1/2 is what the Hawkeyes are getting
- 37:48over in Lincoln, grabbing some points in the game that's come
- 37:51down to the wire and I has got it every time.
- 37:54Something to put in the back pocket tonight.
- 37:56NBA draft lottery. Now you can lay what -50,000 on
- 38:00Cooper flag to be the number one pick.
- 38:02What would have to happen? Is it off the board?
- 38:04A lot of places that is the case also.
- 38:05But the NBA draft was as a youngster for me, one of my
- 38:09favorite events of the year, going from college basketball,
- 38:12my first love into the NBA, which actually like back in the
- 38:1690s and the 80s, it was the merging of these two worlds.
- 38:20And tonight, I don't know if I'm going to get over there.
- 38:23I will be watching baseball and certainly watching my Minnesota
- 38:25Twins and with it betting against my Minnesota Twins.
- 38:28We'll go back to the well with my picks of the day presented by
- 38:31Circa Sports. Will grab the plus 1/15 with the
- 38:34Mariners tonight. Joe Ryan against George Kirby in
- 38:37that matchup. Kirby coming off injury and has
- 38:39not been very good. Also going to play a total
- 38:42tonight, a rarity in my betting portfolio, but we're going to go
- 38:46under tonight in Kansas City as a Royals play host to the Rays.
- 38:50Rasmussen, who's been excellent for Tampa against Michael
- 38:53Walker, has been pretty good in his own right 3.24 ERA.
