- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. A United Airlines flight landed at St.
- 0:09Speaker 2: John's International early this morning after declaring an emergency en
- 0:13Speaker 2: route to Amsterdam. The flight, which took off from Washington Dulles,
- 0:17Speaker 2: reportedly experienced engine trouble over the Atlantic. An emergency was
- 0:22Speaker 2: declared and the Boeing 767 landed at YYT around 3.30.
- 0:27Speaker 1: St.
- 0:27Speaker 2: John's Regional Fire Department was called in to assist firefighters
- 0:31Speaker 2: at the airport. The airline is sending a second aircraft
- 0:34Speaker 2: from New York to get passengers to their destination. Police
- 0:38Speaker 2: have been keeping an extra eye on the roadways this
- 0:41Speaker 2: long weekend. However, not all traffic stops were for bad behavior.
- 0:46Speaker 2: The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was out patrolling roadways in the
- 0:49Speaker 2: metro area on Saturday, hauling over law-abiding drivers and rewarding
- 0:54Speaker 2: them with a turkey just in time for Thanksgiving. Not
- 0:57Speaker 2: all were treated to a feast, however, as RNC ended
- 1:01Speaker 2: up ticketing two drivers for going more than 50 kilometers
- 1:04Speaker 2: an hour over the posted speed limit on the outer ring.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Police forces across the country have been taking part in
- 1:11Speaker 2: Operation Impact, which runs until today. A journalist who delved
- 1:16Speaker 2: into the world of chips, VLTs and casinos is warning
- 1:20Speaker 2: that gambling is becoming an epidemic in Canada. Rob Chernick,
- 1:24Speaker 2: the author of A Losing Hand, examined the various jurisdictions
- 1:28Speaker 2: across Canada for the book, including Newfoundland and Labrador. He
- 1:32Speaker 2: says stronger public awareness is needed to reduce the human cost.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Recent evidence in Ontario shows a trend of related emergency
- 1:40Speaker 2: room visits, self-harm risk, and acute harms among younger men.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But not all provinces have that data, Newfoundland and Labrador
- 1:48Speaker 2: being one of them.
- 1:50Speaker 1: When we legalize and we expand gambling, there's always a risk.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And so you have to say to yourself, is it
- 1:56Speaker 1: worth that risk? And if you don't know the numbers
- 1:59Speaker 1: like this, you don't know if it's worth the risk.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And I think it's important to note that Newfoundland and
- 2:05Speaker 1: Labrador is the only province without a physical casino.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Chernick says getting information from this province was not easy.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And for a long time, the line was they were
- 2:14Speaker 1: not going to open an ALC online casino. And then
- 2:16Speaker 1: they did quite quietly. And when I asked the government why...
- 2:21Speaker 1: they kind of tiptoed around it. So I think it's
- 2:23Speaker 1: just important to know that this expansion keeps happening and
- 2:27Speaker 1: people aren't necessarily looking at this data and making decisions
- 2:30Speaker 1: based on that.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Most government offices and facilities will be shut down today
- 2:35Speaker 2: for the Thanksgiving holiday. As this is a shop's closing holiday,
- 2:39Speaker 2: most stores will also be closed with the exception of
- 2:42Speaker 2: some restaurants, pharmacies, and other locally owned businesses. In St. John's,
- 2:47Speaker 2: garbage collection is moved to tomorrow, Robin Hood Bay is closed,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and paid parking restrictions are not in effect. The annual
- 2:56Speaker 2: moose hunt in Terranova National Park begins tomorrow. Framed as
- 3:01Speaker 2: a moose reduction program and not a moose hunt per se,
- 3:04Speaker 2: the program began in 2011 as a way to control
- 3:07Speaker 2: the damaging impact too many moose have on forest growth
- 3:10Speaker 2: in the park. The park is divided into two zones.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Hunting in Zone 1 begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday,
- 3:17Speaker 2: January 31st. Hunting in Zone 2 is closed for the
- 3:22Speaker 2: entire 2026-27 season. The remnants of Hurricane Isaias have brought
- 3:28Speaker 2: heavy rain and flooding risk to parts of the Central
- 3:31Speaker 2: Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic region. The late-season storm, which hit Florida
- 3:36Speaker 2: as a Category 2 hurricane, has caused at least four
- 3:39Speaker 2: deaths since it made landfall near Pensacola Friday night. Significant
- 3:43Speaker 2: damage and power outages have been reported in Florida, Alabama
- 3:47Speaker 2: and North Carolina. Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon is pounding Mexico's Pacific
- 3:52Speaker 2: coast as a Category 3 storm. Its maximum sustained winds
- 3:56Speaker 2: have weakened to 195 kilometers per hour, but forecasters say
- 4:01Speaker 2: it remains dangerous with life-threatening storm surges and heavy rainfall.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Up next, your VOCM weather forecast.
