- 0:03Hi, Millory Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:07We'll take you until low just before 2:00.
- 0:10Off the bench, Sean Roberts, Lucas trained 2 until 5.
- 0:14Overtime, Iowa, from 5:00 until 6:00.
- 0:17Well, the Twin Cities the place to be tonight as far as the eye
- 0:20of the sports world, the Jays and the Twins.
- 0:26What do you think actual attendance is?
- 0:27Well, if you. See, it's Toronto.
- 0:29OK, some people that already planned the trip.
- 0:31People apply, Yeah. The got to go to war.
- 0:33The great white N will go to war in Minneapolis in April.
- 0:37Absolutely. I told you a million times how
- 0:40pumped I used to get to go to Grand Forks in January.
- 0:42Go in the States. Tank top and shorts for all
- 0:45those Canadians. Really.
- 0:47In a balmy 38° tonight. So I I, I can't tell you how
- 0:53much I look forward to going to A to the Dome because I knew I
- 0:56was going to see, but just going to the states to watch baseball
- 0:59and I know that they'll be a bunch of Blue Jays fans in
- 1:02attendance. Now, obviously the focus of the
- 1:04sports world will be on the NBA game and to Somo's questionable
- 1:09Yes. Did you see that?
- 1:11They're in trouble. They're in trouble.
- 1:12Yeah. I thought they're in trouble.
- 1:14Series, are they? No, I thought they're in trouble
- 1:16up 31. What's the so the other day we
- 1:19were kicking around the price for the Nuggets to come back and
- 1:24on what's today, Thursday? So Tuesday's game they were -500
- 1:28on the money line. Is that what they were the
- 1:30Nuggets and you were trying to figure out would be better to
- 1:33take them in the series now or just roll over?
- 1:36What's the price on Denver tonight?
- 1:38What kind of money are you getting?
- 1:39-250. They're that big of a favorite.
- 1:42Yes, yeah, they're 6 1/2 now and then it's going to.
- 1:48Be 5 -, 500 again, that's come on boys, find a win and win.
- 1:53Find a way to win a game. Well, how do what do they have
- 1:56to do? Randall They.
- 1:57Can't. They can't.
- 1:57Win Randall has to go off like a 40 like yeah, 5 point game.
- 2:03Yes. OK, so there's Step 1.
- 2:05Randall plays. Are we getting close?
- 2:07We got a long ways to go. Go get on.
- 2:09Go Bear for his three. Yes, yeah, we're not talking
- 2:12offensively, but he has to play again straight Djokic, make him
- 2:17frustrated out there, piss him off, maybe he gets a tee,
- 2:21something like that. Get it under, yeah, get him off
- 2:23his game if that's possible. McDaniels.
- 2:26Has to do something. Well, he'll get under their skin
- 2:28'cause that's. That's his game.
- 2:30Can Can you believe a guy? I mean, I grew up in the day of
- 2:33the Enforcers. Bill Ampier like the the
- 2:36physical. What a nasty son of a.
- 2:39Gun Jade No Jade McDaniels. He weighs 180 lbs.
- 2:43Yeah. No, no.
- 2:45This guy, though, is about as big of an agitator as you're
- 2:47going to find if he's playing in 1986 against the Pistons.
- 2:51Oh my God, he's getting He wouldn't last, Would not last.
- 2:54He needs to do those things though.
- 2:55Get another skin, knock down some shots, probably put up 20
- 3:0118. Yeah, OK.
- 3:02De Somo, does he play? And if he does, what can he Can
- 3:05he count on him for 20? Bones Highland, Mike.
- 3:10Hodley Connelly. Connelly's got every now and
- 3:12then he's turns back to hands of time and 'cause he's what, 38?
- 3:17Is he 38 or 36? He is 38 years old.
- 3:20Jesus He. Is an old man from BA stand.
- 3:23He is, unless you're. LeBron yeah.
- 3:25Nas Reed. Gotta get something out of
- 3:27Nazrid and he's got that party, he's got that game.
- 3:30Yes, yeah, he can have a 23 point performance knock down 563
- 3:35point or something like that. We're asking a lot.
- 3:38I mean the talk about threading the needle.
- 3:40Whole jokers to 12 and. That's not, that's never gonna
- 3:43happen. He's gonna get a triple, double,
- 3:44Sure. It's just you need it.
- 3:46Him shooting one of eight from three, taking too many 3
- 3:50pointers, scoring 24 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
- 3:54Hope Jamal Murray has an off game.
- 3:55I mean, you gotta ask for so much.
- 3:57That's why I don't give much of a chance.
- 3:58All right, so they're beat. What about the what's?
- 4:01Going on ice. Let's go, Let's go on.
- 4:03I think Minnesota wins ends the series tonight.
- 4:07You're saying this is somebody who that watches hockey as much
- 4:10as anybody? As soon as Quinn Hughes was
- 4:12traded over to the Minnesota, while on that day, I was on
- 4:14these airwaves with you and say this became a major, major
- 4:17player. And then they got better and
- 4:19tougher and bigger at the trade deadline.
- 4:21Dallas loves to push everybody around.
- 4:24They're not pushing anybody around on the wild.
- 4:26One thing that I've noticed jumping in a week and a half
- 4:29ago, Yeah, man, he's on the ice a lot.
- 4:32Yes, I swear, every single time. Like sick guy ever take a break?
- 4:362628 minutes a game. It's incredible.
- 4:39Just here in his name. Oh, there he is.
- 4:41There, there. I thought he wait.
- 4:42I thought he just had a shift. I thought they just changed.
- 4:44He's still out there. That guy is out on the ice.
- 4:47Something that is very much like myself, a very hockey novice.
- 4:50That is one thing that jumped out.
- 4:52Now I commit at a different perspective fan, but Minnesota
- 4:58sports. Sure.
- 5:00And that's the thing. And I thought, yeah, come on,
- 5:02it's a thing. That is going to be a building
- 5:05today. And you know, this kid, I, I go
- 5:08back, this is the first time I really, I started to get the
- 5:10memory and understanding, I guess, of a deeper level of
- 5:13sports and how fan bases react. Cubs fans, I think you've known
- 5:17that throughout your whole life. The black cat, just all the
- 5:20different things. Obviously the Billy goat, you
- 5:23grow a part of that. But it was some of those games
- 5:25when the Red Sox started to become good in the mid 90s and
- 5:28into the late 90s, and that feeling you would get anytime at
- 5:32Fenway. It was just that sense, that
- 5:35feeling that you can't describe it.
- 5:37It's an aura that surrounds it. We're screwed.
- 5:40Yeah, we're up. Fight.
- 5:42And just that nervous energy that you can feel in the stands.
- 5:46And I think they're going to be feeling it tonight in Saint
- 5:48Paul. I think, yeah, probably.
- 5:50That fan base, they need something good to happen.
- 5:52Score the first goal and go absolutely nuts.
- 5:55They get down 1 nothing in the 1st 7 minutes of the.
- 5:59Like Montreal came out last night in Tampa Bay, 2 minutes in
- 6:02the game, they're up 1 zip. They took the crowd right out of
- 6:05the game. A.
- 6:05Huge necessity, I think for Minnesota tonight because it's
- 6:09not just the Wild, but they have their own failures.
- 6:12It is about the state, the city, the failures of just overall
- 6:17organizations in that state that have been so bad for so long and
- 6:20not being able to get over the hump that that I think you're
- 6:23going to feel it tonight. So just a different way of
- 6:25watching and report back to me tonight.
- 6:27Let's see if you if you get that same kind of feeling because I
- 6:30do have a different feeling. And I'm going to be nervous even
- 6:32though I don't care about hockey until April.
- 6:34And then for me, it's done in April because the Wild get beat
- 6:37in the first round. If you can feel the same kind of
- 6:40thing that I am sensing we're going to feel in this stands
- 6:42this. Evening, absolutely.
- 6:44Look, I will cheer for the while tonight once the games over, and
- 6:47if they do, when I'll go wash my mouth out with soap it.
- 6:50Feels a little dirty to us, yes. I mean, yeah, but it's great for
- 6:54this. It's great for, I think, look, I
- 6:56don't think anybody is going to and run out and buy hockey
- 6:59equipment for the kid, but you might buy tickets to go see the
- 7:02Iowa Wild next winter. Did you get that opportunity?
- 7:04Somebody's got your your company's going or whatever.
- 7:07You might. Yeah.
- 7:08You know what? It was pretty cool when I
- 7:09watched it and a lot of these guys came up this way.
- 7:11Maybe I'll go and and watch that and see it up close for the
- 7:15first time. But it's a hell of a series.
- 7:18Game 6 tonight, the Wild up three games to two, got a chance
- 7:23to knock out the Dallas Stars, who legitimately have a chance.
- 7:27One of three teams in the in the West and they're all in the same
- 7:30division. Colorado can represent the West.
- 7:32Dallas can represent the West. Minnesota can represent the
- 7:35West. I don't give the Vegas gold
- 7:37nicest shot. I don't give Utah a chance.
- 7:40Edmonton, I don't think they're going to win.
- 7:42Even if they do, if they get by the Ducks, whoever comes out of
- 7:46the Pacific, I I just don't think they're anywhere close to
- 7:49those other squads. Let's switch gears.
- 7:52Let's talk some college basketball with a friend, Rob
- 7:55Doster from the field of 68, Rob Trenton.
- 7:58Ken, thank you for coming on. Anxious to hear your opinion on
- 8:01this. I've I've seen a lot of national
- 8:04guys in this, in this sport of coloring.
- 8:09They're not sport business of covering college basketball kind
- 8:12of poo poo in the idea. On the surface, I understand it.
- 8:15I mean, it was so special at 64 that it was 68.
- 8:18But isn't the bottom line all about the almighty buck in the
- 8:22way that college, whether it be football or basketball and all
- 8:25these NIL payments, etcetera. Everybody's trying to find money
- 8:28at the end of the day. When Thursday rolls around and
- 8:31you're, you know, it's 12:20 Eastern, 11:20 central time zone
- 8:37Thursday for the, you know, quote, official beginning of the
- 8:40tournament. Won't we forget about what
- 8:41happened the two days prior? Hold on, are you trying to tell
- 8:47me that you're in? You want to expand the
- 8:49tournament? I get the money aspect.
- 8:51Of it where where we stop at Ken, where we stop, we going to
- 8:5476, we going to 82, we going to 130.
- 8:57Eight, yes, I think sadly, unfortunately it's going to get
- 9:01to that part because it's all about TV, right?
- 9:04And if you can, if you can get these networks to write checks
- 9:08at all the all the schools that are trying all the conferences.
- 9:11I mean, the big twelves get in business with private equity.
- 9:13They never would have done that in the past as everybody tries
- 9:16to find new revenue streams. I just think that, you know,
- 9:19college football, nobody wanted the playoff was going to ruin
- 9:22the regular season. Well, it didn't.
- 9:23It's three extra games on Tuesday, three extra games on
- 9:27Wednesday. None of those teams that win are
- 9:29going to have an impact on that tournament.
- 9:30I get that it ruins the office bracket pool because the
- 9:34brackets kind of, you know, it goes the way the dodo bird, but
- 9:37it's a about money as I see it. That's how I see it.
- 9:40Don't love it, but I understand the circumstances.
- 9:43Here, here's what I think we should do.
- 9:44OK, this is how I think we should expand the tournament.
- 9:46I I think it's unfair that we don't allow every single team to
- 9:50be a part of it. So I think that we, we let all
- 9:54365 days you want teams be a part of the tournament.
- 9:57But I think that the way that you need to break it up is to be
- 10:00able to be manageable is to go conference by conference to
- 10:04start, right? Because that's the only you
- 10:06can't have a 365 team bracket. So every conference then plays
- 10:09their plays a tournament to be able to get into the NCAA
- 10:13tournament. And then we use the winners of
- 10:15those tournaments to be able to field a bigger tournament.
- 10:18But since we want to make sure that we have enough of these
- 10:20other big conference teams, why don't we just let them pick who
- 10:24they want to also be a part of this tournament?
- 10:26And then we can have we can even call them like at large bids or
- 10:29something like that to be able to get to like a normal sized
- 10:31bracket. That's what I think we should do
- 10:33down breaking revolutionary. I'm good with that.
- 10:38You just got to find money somewhere and that's how I see
- 10:40this, the these additional teams that have been added to the
- 10:44bracket. Rob, do you know how much money
- 10:46there is? Because I know for a while and
- 10:48the reason that this has been out there for 3-4 years now
- 10:51about this expansion is the TP partners were not exactly
- 10:54willing to overspend for these kind of games.
- 10:57Any idea what that's going to look like?
- 10:59Or is that still a negotiation that has to happen once this
- 11:02becomes official? I don't think that the TV
- 11:05partners are getting more money or are paying more money.
- 11:09Yeah, this is not something where like CBS has six more
- 11:12years on the deal, right? You can add more teams, but that
- 11:16doesn't mean that CBS has to pay for them.
- 11:17But that doesn't mean Turner has to pay for them.
- 11:19That's more money coming in like this is this.
- 11:22I don't think that this is a a play where more revenue is
- 11:26coming into the NCAA from permanent stuff.
- 11:30I think that more than anything, this is a measure of protection
- 11:36against the SEC and the Big 10 saying, oh, you want to let us
- 11:40won't allow us to have 85% of our conferences in the NCAA
- 11:43tournament. I'm taking my ball and I'm going
- 11:45home and I'm not playing in your tournament.
- 11:47We're going to go start our own tournament because we want to be
- 11:49able to have all of our teams in the tournament.
- 11:51I think more than anything is that this isn't in in the next 6
- 11:55years. This isn't going to make the
- 11:57NCAA more money from the the deal that they already have.
- 12:01If anything, it's going to cost the money because now you have
- 12:04to be able to pay for the buildings that you're going to
- 12:08be playing these games in, whether that's playing like six
- 12:12games in two days. And Dayton are creating two
- 12:15other sites that you have playing games get get hosted.
- 12:20You're going to have to pay for the charter flights to get those
- 12:22teams there and then get the winners to the places that
- 12:24they're going to end up being. You're going to have to pay for
- 12:26referees. You're going to have to pay for
- 12:27everything that it comes with broadcasting games.
- 12:30It's this is going to cost the NCAA money, not make the NCAA
- 12:34more money. This the way from my
- 12:37understanding of the situation. So I won't we'll see how all
- 12:40that plays out. But I think more than anything,
- 12:44this was a defensive measure against teams from those bigger
- 12:50conferences not being a part of the NCAA anymore.
- 12:54And then also an issue where like I think that the people
- 12:58that want this to happen are the coaches, because more coaches
- 13:02get into the tournament means less coaches that are going to
- 13:04end up getting fired. And more bonuses for making the
- 13:07tournament. Well, yeah, and it's like the
- 13:10way it is right now is that there's going to be 8 high major
- 13:12coaches that are going to be that much further away from
- 13:14being on the hot seat because they have a way to be able to
- 13:17get a bid to the NCAA tournament as a playing game 13 seed.
- 13:20Where the hell they're going to end up here doing here Now it's
- 13:23conferences that are going to have, you know, I think he's
- 13:27been major leagues have talked themselves into the idea that
- 13:29this is going to provide more opportunity for them to get at
- 13:31large bids, even though we all know that is just absolute
- 13:34insanity. There's no way that that's going
- 13:35to be how this plays out. And then it is the the schools
- 13:40and the athletic directors that realize like, hey, you know
- 13:42what, if our guys are on the hot, that's fewer buyouts that
- 13:45we're going to have to pay. So it's, it's all the people in
- 13:50this sport. I understand why they all want
- 13:52it. My question is who outside of
- 13:55like athletic directors and coaches want this to happen or
- 13:58who are you trying to serve if you're the NCAA making this
- 14:01decision like it's not the consumer?
- 14:03Because I think it's been pleasantly clear that this is
- 14:06not something that fans want to have happen.
- 14:08So that's that's the part of it that frustrates me.
- 14:11Well, the degenerate gamblers like myself like it.
- 14:13It's a little bit more to fire at late night games.
- 14:15I like that part of it. But yeah, I know we're certainly
- 14:18in the. I don't know.
- 14:19I think that probably that helps into it.
- 14:22Oh yeah, that helps legalize sports betting.
- 14:24Rob, one question that I have now, every 16 seed will play in
- 14:28to get into the main bracket. That means also wind shares that
- 14:32go along with it. There's also been conversation
- 14:34though about a changing of the structure of those wind shares
- 14:37where a win in the first round means just as much as a win as
- 14:40you advance on and how important that is for the little guy.
- 14:43Not even the mid majors, we're talking about the Missouri
- 14:45Valley and it's important to them.
- 14:47But those low major references that are out there.
- 14:49Any update on the structure and the units that are given four
- 14:53wins in the tournament and if that's going to be changing?
- 14:56I mean, yes, it's going to help and it's going to make sure that
- 14:59some of those teams get more money.
- 15:00But you're also now like teams that were 15 seeds are now 16
- 15:04seed playing game teams, right? Teams that were 14 seeds are now
- 15:0815 seed playing games, which means teams that are 13 seeds
- 15:11are now 14. Teams that are 12 that were 12
- 15:14are now 13. And it makes it you're going to
- 15:16have six major teams that are guaranteed to be able to win
- 15:19games, but you're also now making it that much more likely
- 15:23that the other mid majors have an opportunity to win games.
- 15:25And that's before you consider the impact that that NIL is
- 15:30having on trying to eliminate the the Cinderella already,
- 15:33because it's that much more difficult for some of these
- 15:35smaller programs to compete as it stands.
- 15:37So it's I don't think that the people that are trying to spin
- 15:41this as this is going to be a good thing for money coming into
- 15:43the low managers like one, what is a wind chair going to do when
- 15:47Louisville's got 20,000,000 whatever dollars to spend,
- 15:50right? It's not there's not going to be
- 15:52an impact on it. And to the the idea that this is
- 15:57a good thing for the mids because they can win more money
- 15:59in those first games completely ignores the fact that like
- 16:04everything else about this is kind of poorly structured for
- 16:07the mid managers. That's I.
- 16:10I can't get behind that. Argument all right, I am now off
- 16:13of my argument because if that's the case that they're not going
- 16:15to get any more money, you're going to ask them to play extra
- 16:17games and the CBS is just going to status quo then then no, I'm
- 16:22back. I'm on your side on this one.
- 16:25We'll we'll see where that thing goes.
- 16:26So what about obviously Dayton can't host them?
- 16:28All I know that Vegas is putting together.
- 16:31They've got a committee out there that goes after these big
- 16:33events like this, the Final Four, like the Super Bowl,
- 16:35etcetera. They got right to work trying to
- 16:38be the West Coast. Quote Dayton, if you will.
- 16:41I'm not sure I can say Dayton and Vegas in the same sentence,
- 16:44but you get my point. But Vegas wants it.
- 16:47Does that make sense to you? Vegas for college basketball
- 16:55games, for tournament games. Seems that I'll be honest, I'm
- 17:00not the biggest like Las Vegas fan, right?
- 17:04Like I just when especially when the nerd went there, I think
- 17:07that it becomes a cluster, it becomes a disaster.
- 17:10So I. Don't think you heard my comment
- 17:12there, Doster. I'll just give you a crap about
- 17:14not love in Vegas because Ken and I absolutely do love Vegas
- 17:18and we have a different perspective.
- 17:19On So It's Not Vegas Where though?
- 17:21Rob what? What?
- 17:22To it's got to be a hub, right? It's got to be Dayton.
- 17:25Is Dayton easy to get to? I mean flight wise.
- 17:29I mean, it's not that far from Cincinnati and Cincinnati is
- 17:33relatively easy to get to. What I think that they should do
- 17:36is I think that they should take two other historical venues like
- 17:39take Fog, Allen's Field House and the Palestra, or do it at
- 17:45the Kennel and do it like so you could have one in the middle of
- 17:48the country in Dayton. You could have one on the West
- 17:50Coast in Spokane. You could have one on the East
- 17:51Coast in the Palestra. And then the teams that would
- 17:54advance to someone in the East region would play in the East
- 17:57and the teams that would advance somewhere the Midwest playing
- 17:59the Midwest. To me, that's what I would do if
- 18:02I was doing I would I wouldn't do it Vegas.
- 18:04Also what I would actually do, and I think that this would
- 18:08actually make it a little bit more palatable to expand the
- 18:10tournament is instead of having just playing games, make these
- 18:14belittle like playing Mt ES where you have you have four
- 18:20teams in a site and then you play 2 games on the Tuesday and
- 18:24you play the winners play on the Wednesday.
- 18:27And then all those those four teams advance to a spot in the
- 18:30bracket that would play on a Friday and make them play their
- 18:34way into the tournament by playing A4 game MTE.
- 18:36That's what I would do if I was the one making these decisions,
- 18:39but I'm not the one making these decisions.
- 18:40They don't even ask me if they want about my opinion on these
- 18:43because if they would, it would be a standard determined.
- 18:46So I got a question here on the regional front.
- 18:48We got our listeners over in the quads cities and plenty of line
- 18:51eye fans over there. I have seen it's not consensus,
- 18:53but so many people have them. Number two, number three, I
- 18:56don't think I've seen them outside of everybody's top five.
- 19:00Tell me about the backcourt. Love the frontcourt.
- 19:02I think we all do. And if you consider Stroakovich
- 19:04part of that frontcourt, tell me about the backcourt and why this
- 19:07should be a team we expect to be a return trip to the Final Four
- 19:11for them and maybe even a step more.
- 19:15So I I have very real questions about Illinois that like I don't
- 19:18know if Illinois has a point guard.
- 19:20So so the thing about it is though, like they have guys that
- 19:25can be initiators. And here's where I'm trying to
- 19:28wrap my head around it. When it comes to what they're
- 19:30going to be this season. They they have like Steph box is
- 19:33the guy that can make plays off the balance, that can make plays
- 19:36in ball screen that can pass like this goal for himself.
- 19:38Not the same as Keaton waggle, but like not world different
- 19:43from Keaton waggle. The status last season, they
- 19:46have a guy named Quentin Coleman who is a freshman off the bench
- 19:49that can do some of those same things.
- 19:52Dovin Mirkovich is a guy that averaged multiple assists per
- 19:55game this past season, right? Like they have things that can
- 19:59do different things. On the floor, where as long as
- 20:02they can get the ball into their half court offense, they're
- 20:05buying into the idea that the offensive ecosystem that they
- 20:09have in the half court is going to be enough to allow them to
- 20:11score regardless of whether or not they have like a pure point
- 20:14guard on the floor. Because they don't they don't
- 20:16have it. There's not a guy in the roster
- 20:18that does that. And I get it.
- 20:20Like, I understand the thought process.
- 20:22I understand thinking. I get where Brad Underwood is
- 20:26coming from when he's trying to build this roster.
- 20:29How effective is it going to be? I, I kind of want to see how
- 20:33that plays out when, when, when you don't have a great lead
- 20:37guard, right? And I can't look at you and say
- 20:40that you're going to be one of the best defensive teams in
- 20:42college basketball. It's a little bit hard for me to
- 20:44get behind the idea that you are a top five team in the sport
- 20:48when Duke has loaded up and Uconn's loaded up and Michigan's
- 20:51loaded up and these other teams have loaded up.
- 20:53So I've got back and we got a guy on our network and Mike with
- 20:56Tulip who is an Illinois fan and played for Illinois.
- 21:01And me and him are going back and forth on this idea multiple
- 21:03times about whether or not this is something that is going to
- 21:06end up working. And he thinks it's going to
- 21:09work. And I'm kind of like, I, I'm
- 21:11going to play the wait and see game here before I fully buy
- 21:15into this idea, but I don't know, I, I can see them being
- 21:19really, really good. I could also see them being like
- 21:21like I don't want to say middle of the table, but like maybe
- 21:25middle of the top 25 like a A3 or a four seed if it doesn't
- 21:29work out the way that they kind of hope.
- 21:31Last thing for me, Duke signed with Amazon today.
- 21:34They're going to play Gonzaga, they can play Michigan, they're
- 21:36going to play UConn, and all those games will be broadcast on
- 21:39Amazon. Any of the idea, the financials
- 21:42surrounding that, Rob. Go look at who Duke signed this
- 21:46summer. Think about the amount of money
- 21:48it costs to sign and retain a lot of those players.
- 21:51And then think about the amount of money that a place like
- 21:53Amazon would pay to be able to exclusively broadcast the game
- 22:00between Duke and the reigning national champions.
- 22:03A game between Duke and Gonzaga and a rematch of last year's
- 22:08instant classic, one of the best college basketball games that
- 22:10we've seen in a very, very, very long time between Duke and
- 22:13UConn. This is it's an NIO play.
- 22:15That's all that money coming in that they can use to be able to
- 22:18play paint players, to be able to to sign them, to be able to
- 22:22add them. Like they just got a kid from
- 22:24Barcelona who's who's not even 17 yet named Joaquim Boom Boom.
- 22:30I don't know if you guys remember this name Ruben Boom
- 22:32Boom. It's his son who has a chance to
- 22:35be a lottery pick, maybe even a top five pick in the 2028 draft.
- 22:40He's the guy that he has to play two years in college, but he
- 22:43averaged like 16 points in 2020 in 21 minutes playing for La
- 22:48Ligas. Like U23, they call it Liga U,
- 22:51It's La Ligas. It's the Spanish professional
- 22:54league's under 23 division. And that kid was wanted by
- 22:59everybody and he was not cheap. And that he's going to be riding
- 23:03that. They got him on a 2 year deal.
- 23:05He's going to be riding the bench run this year.
- 23:06And that's when you consider they've also added Cam, yeah,
- 23:11Cam Williams. They, they brought in Ganga
- 23:12back. They, they, they've, they've got
- 23:16a number of really, really talented freshmen coming in.
- 23:18Like you have to be able to find ways to get creative to pay for
- 23:23the talent that you have on that roster.
- 23:25And that is exactly what Duke is doing with this deal.
- 23:28But. Only on the local front.
- 23:30TJ Alzenberger signs an extension with Iowa State, $6
- 23:33million a year, 7th on the national list now of highest
- 23:36paid coaches. The Cyclone coach has done a
- 23:39great job, 10 year contract extension.
- 23:41Your thoughts on that? And Portal went out, identified
- 23:44his guys, and he was done in a weekend.
- 23:48Yeah, I mean, look, give TJ whatever he wants, whatever it
- 23:52is, I don't care because one, I think he's probably still
- 23:55underpaid. 2, he just said no to North Carolina without so much
- 23:59as getting an interview. He said no to North Carolina,
- 24:02the Tar Heels to stay in AIDS without even like, considering
- 24:06there wasn't even a thought there.
- 24:07There wasn't even like an actual interview.
- 24:09He was just like, yeah, you know what?
- 24:10Don't even look for me. Ain't I ain't coming.
- 24:13It's not me. I'm not the guy.
- 24:15Give him whatever he wants, man. And if he's only asking, I'm
- 24:18meaningless legitimately. If he's only asking for $6
- 24:21million, that's a steal for what TJ Altsberger's been so far in
- 24:25in Ames. A ridiculous idea to go to 76,
- 24:28as we said when we first brought you on.
- 24:30Look at you. Hey, you can teach another.
- 24:33That's stubborn. I did not know there was no
- 24:35extra money involved. Rob Doster, you've convinced me.
- 24:38Great to talk to you, buddy. Appreciate you coming on field
- 24:40of 68. Good.
- 24:42I'm glad we got you. We got you on the right side.
- 24:44We got you on. I needed to make sure that's the
- 24:46whole reason I came on today was to get you back on the right
- 24:49side of his. Mission accomplished, my friend.
- 24:51Thanks, Rob. We'll talk down the road.
- 24:53See you, buddy. See.
- 24:54Ya later, fellas. Good to talk to you Rob Doster,
- 24:56as we talk college hoop. So Illinois is a factor this
- 24:59year, huh? I need proof of concept when you
- 25:04got questions like that in the back court.
- 25:06Love the front guard. Sure.
- 25:08Djokovic is he's in the he's testing the NBA waters, right?
- 25:12Yeah, that's a big. That's a big.
- 25:14You got the brothers back. They're they're big up front.
- 25:18Big up front last year, bigger with a year's experience.
- 25:21Another year's experience under the belt.
- 25:23All right, we'll talk Derby next.
- 25:25Come on back, we will pick. Dick Girardi's brains Covered it
- 25:28for decades. Another scratch this morning.
- 25:34Of course, I'd like too. But nonetheless, we'll talk
- 25:36Derby on the other side, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 25:39Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon, Welcome back.
- 25:44Iowa Sports Radio Network. We'll take you until 2O clock.
- 25:48Trent's plays of the day coming up, Circus sports sponsor those
- 25:53about 10 minutes or so before 2O clock.
- 25:55But let's talk Derby before that, shall we?
- 25:57Dick Girardi's covered handfuls of them in his newspaper career.
- 26:02Now speaking on behalf of BetOnline, dot AG and he joins
- 26:06us to break down the 152nd, A run for the Roses.
- 26:09Dick Trenton, Kenton, Des Moines, thanks for coming on.
- 26:11How are things with you Dick all?
- 26:14Good guys yourself. Doing well, you know, before we
- 26:17get into the Derby. I just had someone call during
- 26:19the brace at break and ask to ask you, do you have an Oaks
- 26:23pick for tomorrow? It's prime time.
- 26:26They're going to run it under the lights of Churchill NBC at
- 26:29night. Do you have an Oaks pick?
- 26:31Very hard race it is. I like the I like the one
- 26:34Explorer and the four counting stars, but man, you can make a
- 26:39case there's fourteen in here. We've had a couple scratches and
- 26:42all the also eligibles are now in, but man what a hard race.
- 26:45Yeah, Cassie loves his horse Counting Stars.
- 26:48I'm going to use him as well. So let's get to the Derby.
- 26:51Couple of defections in there, including one this morning that
- 26:55like I was kind of in, I know Cox has three and this was the
- 26:59one that was flying under the radar.
- 27:00The full effort. I gave him an outside chance.
- 27:04I know that he's, you know, running on the whatever they
- 27:08call it, but the synthetic and now he's back on the dirt,
- 27:13obviously. Churchill, did you like him at
- 27:15all, Dick? He's not going to run, but does
- 27:16that change the way you see things?
- 27:19It doesn't change the way I see things, but yeah, I think he was
- 27:21a marginal contender for sure. And there's a great profit bet
- 27:25online that any Brad Coxworth win and that price has now I'm
- 27:29sure gone up. It was 9 to 5 because he's got
- 27:32obviously the Bluegrass winner and he's got the Florida Derby
- 27:35winner. But yeah, it would have been a
- 27:36better bet. You also had the Jeff Ruby
- 27:38Stakes, where we had three major prep winners and one bet on a
- 27:42prop bet. That would have been nice.
- 27:43Any what jumps out to you about this field as a whole?
- 27:48What do you look at it a lot of strong contenders overall?
- 27:51Is it a deep field? Is it a shorter field?
- 27:53How do you kind of grade through all the different horses when
- 27:56you put them into a group? Very consistent and deep.
- 28:00I'd say it goes 678 horses deep. You could make a case for the
- 28:05top three in the Florida Derby. Clearly the Arkansas Derby
- 28:09Winter Renegade Bluegrass stakes winner further ado.
- 28:13I mean, they're just all and they all kind of look similar.
- 28:17They're all pretty consistent. It's not like they run a really
- 28:19terrible race and then run a good one.
- 28:21They're the most consistent horse of the bunch is
- 28:23Commandment is 1/3 in a row or for, excuse me, four in a row.
- 28:27But yeah, it's it's a good group.
- 28:29But what sticks out is there's no like obvious star, right?
- 28:33There's no Justify or American Pharaoh, those kind of horses
- 28:37this year. But that doesn't mean it's not
- 28:39going to be a good race. I'm sure it will be.
- 28:41Absolutely. So back in February when
- 28:43emerging market broke his maiden, I went to my Equibase
- 28:46virtual stable and I put his name in there and I'm and in the
- 28:49comments I put is it too late to get to the Derby?
- 28:52Well, as we know, it's not too late to get to the Derby.
- 28:54He come back and he came back and won the Louisiana Derby
- 28:57numbers went down. I think he's sitting on a big
- 28:59one. I love the way that he's
- 29:00training. I don't think I'm going to get
- 29:0215 to one. I've been touting emerging
- 29:04market to anyone that will listen.
- 29:06How do you feel about the 15 the Louisiana Derby winner Emerging
- 29:10market? Definitely contender.
- 29:12I mean you have one of the best jockey trainer combos in the in
- 29:15the world and flabby Pratt and Chad Brown.
- 29:18So you take that into consideration.
- 29:20But the two races is concerning, but it's not as concerning as it
- 29:24used to be right. The resources come in here, so
- 29:26likely race. That's one of the next things
- 29:28that's going to flaw. Remember when justify 1 you
- 29:31couldn't win if you hadn't raced 3 year old?
- 29:32Well, all he all he did was win the Triple Crown.
- 29:35So obviously that one's out. So now I think I think he's a
- 29:38contender. I'm not sure.
- 29:40I didn't. I love Louisiana Derby.
- 29:42I mean, I didn't hate it, but it took him a long time to go by
- 29:45Pavlovy and there's going to be a long shot on Saturday.
- 29:47That's a little bit of a concern.
- 29:49But if the trainer thinks he's good enough to get here and he's
- 29:52not the kind of guy that just goes, if he doesn't think
- 29:54they're good enough, he waits for the freakness.
- 29:56That tells me a lot. So yeah, I think you might be on
- 29:58to something. Dick, some big picture things
- 30:01for you. Yesterday Dan Wilkin of Yahoo
- 30:04had an article talking about betting algorithms and and the
- 30:07way that that is changing horse betting.
- 30:09Also a story today on ESPN talking about a couple of the
- 30:13new emerging markets that are out there with the Cal she's of
- 30:16the world and the Poly market. They do not right now offer
- 30:20wagering on the dirt, yet they offer things on everything,
- 30:24including things that you can manipulate.
- 30:25But that's a conversation for a different day if you can.
- 30:28You've been in this space for such a long time, Dick.
- 30:31Just the changing of this market and how things as everything
- 30:34evolves, horse racing having to evolve along with it.
- 30:37Yeah, I would recommend Dan's story to everybody.
- 30:39I thought he did a really good job of explaining the computer
- 30:42assisted wagering groups. Basically, it's maybe 10 or 15
- 30:46groups around the country that feed an incredible amount of
- 30:49data. And then the data is basically
- 30:52telling them what the bet, how much the bet, and they're
- 30:55probably responsible for 30 to 40% of the total handle on North
- 30:58American racing. So they obviously have a
- 31:00gigantic influence on the odds. The biggest problem for regular
- 31:04players like me is that they can bet at the last.
- 31:07They have the last shot at it and all of a sudden you think
- 31:10you're betting on a 10 to one shot and then they go off and
- 31:12he's 3 to one. That's a little disconcerting.
- 31:15I've made a study myself trying to figure out what, you know,
- 31:18what kind of horses do they like?
- 31:20They love early speed horses. So that's taking me a little bit
- 31:23elsewhere and I just try to find something.
- 31:26If I can find something in a race, that's something I really
- 31:29should only know that there's no data that they're going to know.
- 31:32Maybe it's 40 years worth of history that I have.
- 31:34Those are the kind of horses I really like to bet on because I
- 31:37don't I don't think they're going to go there because you
- 31:39can't beat those, those groups because they're just so
- 31:41sophisticated. So you just try to stay, stay
- 31:43away from them if you can. Yeah.
- 31:45And they're, they're playing obviously for the rebates as
- 31:47well as they get a much bigger rebate than if even if there
- 31:50are, they are still available. And I think the, the, the
- 31:53prediction Mark is that Trent was mentioning.
- 31:55I think that they're playing nice because I could see this
- 31:58coming, a full-fledged betting exchange.
- 32:00They tried it in New Jersey, but it didn't happen.
- 32:02So I want to get back to the race with you.
- 32:04I want to ask you about the 2 Japanese horses.
- 32:07One of one of these years we've seen the impact they've had on
- 32:09the Breeders Cup. One of these years, one of them
- 32:12is going to win the Kentucky Derby.
- 32:14I think Dan and Bourbons got a big chance to be a factor this
- 32:16year. And you know, I, I did a podcast
- 32:19with a group of guys that and I, you know, my first question,
- 32:22well, don't we just throw 1 Jordine out?
- 32:24He can't win. And all three of them came back
- 32:26and said no, no, no, no, no, no, tap the brakes.
- 32:28What about the two invaders from across the pond, the seven and
- 32:32the 10? Will you play them?
- 32:35I'm going to play Dan and Bourbon.
- 32:36He's my the non bourbon. He is actually my choice.
- 32:40I'll start. I'll start with the other one.
- 32:41I just think he's too slow. If you match up the time of the
- 32:45UAE Derby with the Dubai World Cup, it's probably about 15
- 32:48buyer points slower. According to my buddy Randy
- 32:51Moss, who works with us on the buyer figures, that's only about
- 32:54in 94. That's not going to be good
- 32:55enough. The non bourbon.
- 32:57However, when you watch the videos of his races, it's just
- 33:00dazzling. It's like I and I, there's
- 33:02Japanese websites where you can watch all this stuff and you
- 33:05just it's like one of those where you know, you see a great
- 33:08athlete and all of a sudden he's just like different than all the
- 33:10others. That's kind of how I saw him.
- 33:13But my thing, I wanted data to prove what my eyes were seeing.
- 33:16So I looked up again on the Japanese Rep, the Japanese
- 33:20racing website, they show all the times that were on that
- 33:24particular day at different distances and his times match up
- 33:27very, very well. Like he's 2 seconds faster than
- 33:30the other horses running a mile an eighth and horse racing 2
- 33:33seconds is forever. Yeah, the Japanese are going to
- 33:36win this race and I'm hoping it's at 7:00 Saturday night with
- 33:40the non bourbon news that it's sitting about.
- 33:43Think about 13 to one at bet online at the moment.
- 33:46He maybe goes off 15 to one. But yeah, I I've been super
- 33:49impressed. And look, the downside is the
- 33:51jockey and the trainer have 0 familiarity with the American
- 33:54racing and it's a little chaotic because it's the 20 horse field
- 33:57and all that, but you can't account for that.
- 33:59Anyway, I'm just hoping he'd come out of the first turn
- 34:01somewhere in the top five and I'll take my chance.
- 34:04What? What about the fact that he runs
- 34:05races on a track that runs him clockwise?
- 34:08Of course it's counter clockwise here.
- 34:12Is that right? It it is, and keep in mind it's
- 34:15the same thing a lot of the European grass horses do and
- 34:18when they come over here they don't have any problems beating
- 34:20grass horses. They absolutely crush 11 more
- 34:24for me. I got to ask you about So happy
- 34:26I I'm not including this horse yet.
- 34:28He's being pounded at the windows.
- 34:30So happy the California Santa Anita Derby win are your
- 34:33thoughts. Yeah, I'm a little surprised by
- 34:36the amount of money that's coming in on them.
- 34:38Look, I thought his race Insanity Derby was fine.
- 34:41I just didn't think it was as good as some of the other prep
- 34:43races. I thought the Florida Derby is
- 34:45the American horses. To me, Commandment is the most
- 34:48logical horse to run well because he always runs well.
- 34:52But yeah, I'd make so happy a marginal contender.
- 34:55But yeah, if he's going to bet like get that, like that he's
- 34:58been better early. That's just crazy.
- 35:00So for us novices that are out there, you want to play around,
- 35:04you got a couple in your pocket, you want to bet, What would you
- 35:07suggest to people that want to have some fun, maybe get a big
- 35:10ticket out of it? What's kind of the best way for
- 35:13people that just don't know horse racing the same way to get
- 35:15involved and still have a fun and maybe that lottery ticket?
- 35:19So so 7 to win. That's the non bourbon, that's
- 35:22for sure. A little 718 exactly with
- 35:25further ado. I think it's going to run very
- 35:27well. And maybe if you just want to
- 35:29cash a ticket, that's commandment to show.
- 35:30I think he's going to be. I'd be surprised if he's not the
- 35:34top three, but yeah, those are some fun things to fool around
- 35:36with and have fun on dirty day. Absolutely Dick Girardi, good
- 35:39stuff. Appreciate your insights into
- 35:41this race as we always do. Can't wait for it to take place.
- 35:44You know what, one more. Just real quick since I have
- 35:46you. It sounds as though they're that
- 35:49they're starting to for the first time, maybe take moving
- 35:51the the length of time between races a little bit more
- 35:55seriously. Push the Preakness back a week,
- 35:57push the Belmont. Look, I get it for some of the
- 36:00the old school, no, it's not the same blah blah, blah.
- 36:02Well, things change. Do you think this is going to
- 36:05happen, Dick, that eventually the Preakness will be 3 weeks
- 36:08after the Derby? Or maybe it's the first Saturday
- 36:11in June and the Belmont the first Saturday in July.
- 36:13Do you think we're headed that way?
- 36:15We are and that would be my preference on what you just
- 36:18said. I think we'll know more,
- 36:20obviously, after this year's Preakness with the new Pimlico
- 36:23arising from, you know, they tore it down.
- 36:26It should be ready to go next year.
- 36:27Yeah, I think they're going to change the schedule because
- 36:29look, the Preakness is a great race, but it's not the same race
- 36:32without the Derby wins. And they've missed the Derby
- 36:34winner 2 out of the last five years, and that's that's no
- 36:36good. So yeah, I think they're going
- 36:37to have to move it back. And to me, 4 weeks and four
- 36:40weeks would be great. You can have some pushback from
- 36:42Naira because obviously they would like the Belmont Stakes to
- 36:44stay similar to where it is to not mess with Saratoga.
- 36:47But yeah, I think we're heading in that direction when it
- 36:49happens. Exactly.
- 36:51I would think it probably would probably happened before next
- 36:53year, but we'll see. That online AD, Dick.
- 36:55Dick Girardi. Thank you, Dick.
- 36:56Appreciate it. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 36:58See you. You got it.
- 36:59Thanks. Guys enjoy the Derby and a few
- 37:02folks out there want to watch in wager. 6:00 post time.
- 37:04Prairie Meadows watching Wager right there.
- 37:08Dannon Bourbon. Interesting.
- 37:10He's on that horse. I'm on that horse.
- 37:12You're on that horse I am on. A lot of people are on that
- 37:14horse. Not too many, though.
- 37:15I hope not. Our fine listeners, of course.
- 37:17Yes, if. Right, you just make you a
- 37:19little bit of money, but just don't tell your friends
- 37:21anywhere. Else ourselves. 1/4 before 2.
- 37:26What was your record yesterday? I had to duck out a little early
- 37:29and I did not hear your plays yesterday.
- 37:30Did you have a winning day or take a guess?
- 37:34Well, how many did you have? Eight, you're four and four
- 37:36again. Did you have the right juice or
- 37:39did you lose a little? We had the right juice, but.
- 37:42It could have been so much better mentioned at the top.
- 37:45The Mammoth. The Mammoth plus 141 at Circa,
- 37:48by the way, the big places out there plus 1/30.
- 37:53I was also. On the Penguins.
- 37:54To worry. Trent they controlled overtime.
- 37:58Yes, I was. And and just looking at shots on
- 38:01gold it was unreal. What are they up 12?
- 38:03Yes, throughout. When I started watching the 3rd
- 38:05just they dominated. Yep.
- 38:08I just couldn't get one. And just like that.
- 38:12Yep. Blink of an eye.
- 38:14Then there's your hands. That celebration was cool,
- 38:16though. Yeah, it always you can see that
- 38:17there was. Oh, yeah.
- 38:19Philly's. Not want to see celebration look
- 38:21at the the Saint Paul tonight. Yes, that would be.
- 38:25Next level, because what was it, 2001 or 2021 the last time the
- 38:29Flyers, I think, advanced? That's fine.
- 38:30Flyers. Yeah, right.
- 38:31We're talking a dozen years for the Wild.
- 38:35Could happen tonight. They are one win away from
- 38:37punching their ticket to take on Colorado I.
- 38:41Am involved in a little hockey tonight.
- 38:43Well, we're not going to do. That now we're going to take a
- 38:45break and come back. Circus Sports sponsors Trent's
- 38:49plays of the day. They are next.

- 39:24today, 8:00 on Monday. Did you?
- 39:27Have 8:00 on Monday. Four and 4-5 and five.
- 39:30But a winning day on Monday though.
- 39:31Right. No, Monday was not.
- 39:33Tuesday and Wednesday were OK .3 units both days all right, you
- 39:37keep stacking them up and when you're betting units 20 bucks, I
- 39:39mean up up $12.00 lookout, you're having a good week
- 39:43that's. Good for me all.
- 39:44Right, so more. Of the eight couple event.
- 39:48All right, let's hear them. All right, let's start.
- 39:52Let's start in baseball. Gonna take the free square,
- 39:55Jace? Yep. -120. 7 Gossman against 2.
- 39:59It is Bateley Ober. On the bump for the Twinkies,
- 40:03with not many people in attendance for this one, the
- 40:06Blue Jays starting to play some good baseball.
- 40:08The Twins. What will they do at the?
- 40:10Ballpark will they keep the fans that are there up to speed on
- 40:14both the people have phones now. What am I saying?
- 40:16Yeah, exactly. It's a.
- 40:17Complete. Those days are over.
- 40:19Yes, Don't get with it, Miller. Come on, old man.
- 40:22It's 2026. And how many of those people are
- 40:24going to? Be watching something else as
- 40:26opposed to the ball game that they're at.
- 40:28We already bought tickets. We said we're going to go.
- 40:30We got to take whatever it is the senior citizens coming out
- 40:33of me. Giants.
- 40:35In the Phillies tonight, going to go over well late this
- 40:39afternoon, 435 first pitch with that one going to take the over
- 40:42a couple of guys that well, they don't have any stats, so do they
- 40:46have a double? Header today.
- 40:47The Phillies and the Giants they must, right?
- 40:49Yes. Game two, we're going to go.
- 40:50Over 8 flat is the number there over eight runs with the Giants
- 40:56and the Phillies in Game 2. And that is it for baseball.
- 40:59Over to the hockey. That's Minnesota sports.
- 41:02Give me the Stars plus 1/10, that one's pretty easy.
- 41:06Same. It's Minnesota sports.
- 41:07Give me the Nuggets -6 1/2. So that one's a gift, yes.
- 41:11Player prop. 6 1/2 is the. Number you said 6 1/2.
- 41:13I'm also playing the Celtics. I don't know why this team, it's
- 41:16just I talk a ton about 3 point various.
- 41:19I get it. Give me that box score, that's
- 41:22all I need. The Celtics take it to a
- 41:24completely different level, though.
- 41:25I think they'll shoot well on the road.
- 41:26I'll lay the 6 1/2 with the Celts tonight.
- 41:29Jalen Brown, we're going to go under 6 1/2 rebounds, Jane
- 41:33McDaniels over 17 1/2 and well, we can't be done there.
- 41:37So let's throw a little more on the puck.
- 41:40Ducks plus one quack The Ducks. They win the series tonight.
- 41:44Eliminate. The Edmonton Oilers.
- 41:47The Oilers go down, The Ducks quack on.
- 41:51They'll be shaking hands. And we'll see where it goes.
- 41:53And the Ducks, if they advance, they'll wait for the winner of
- 41:56the Golden Knights and the Utah Mammoth.
- 41:59Mammoth had them last. Night they did they?
- 42:01Absolutely. Did a score the equalizer with a
- 42:05goalie pulled in the final minute and then won it in double
- 42:08overtime. All right, that's going to do it
- 42:10for us. So no Mike Palm tomorrow, but
- 42:13Chris Andrews from the South Point, one of the best in the
- 42:16business. A really good do it.
