- 0:41Scripture this morning Our scripture this morning comes
- 0:46from the book of John, chapter 14, verse 8 through 26.
- 0:51Philip said Lord show us the Father and we will be satisfied.
- 0:54Jesus replied, have I been with you this all this time Philip
- 0:58and yet you still don't know who I am.
- 1:00Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father, so why are you
- 1:02asking me to show him to you? Don't you believe that I am in
- 1:05the Father and the Father is in me?
- 1:08The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in
- 1:10me, does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the
- 1:13Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe because of
- 1:16the work you have seen me do I tell you the truth.
- 1:19Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done
- 1:22and even greater works because I am going to be with the Father.
- 1:25You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it so that
- 1:29the Son could bring glory to the Father.
- 1:30Yes, ask me for anything in my name and I will do it.
- 1:34If you love me, obey My commandments and I will ask the
- 1:38Father and He will give you another advocate who will never
- 1:41leave you. He is always Holy Spirit who
- 1:43leads into all truth. The world.
- 1:46The world cannot receive Him because he isn't looking for Him
- 1:48and doesn't recognize Him, but you know him because he lives
- 1:52with you now and later will be in you.
- 1:54No, I will not abandon you as orphans.
- 1:56I will come to you soon. The world will no longer see me,
- 1:59but you will see me. Since I live, you will also
- 2:02live. When I am raised to life again,
- 2:05you will know that I am in my father and you are in me, and I
- 2:08am in you. Those who accept my commandments
- 2:11and obey them are the ones who love me.
- 2:13And because they love me, my father will love them and I will
- 2:16love them and grill myself to each of them.
- 2:18Judas, not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that
- 2:22name said to him, Lord, why? Why are you going to reveal
- 2:25yourself only to us and not to the word at large?
- 2:29Jesus replied, All who love me will do what I say, My Father
- 2:32will love them and we will come and make our home with each of
- 2:35them. Anyone who doesn't love me will
- 2:37not obey me. And remember, my words are not
- 2:39your own. What I am telling to you is from
- 2:42the Father who sent me. I am telling you these things
- 2:44now while I am still with you, but when the Father sends the
- 2:48Advocate as my representative, that is the Holy Spirit.
- 2:51He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I
- 2:54told you. This is the Word of God for the
- 2:55people of God. Thanks be to God 11 weeks ago,
- 3:02if you can believe it, I started this series asking how many of
- 3:07us had been told that as Christians we should be like
- 3:11Jesus, but also that because Jesus is God and we are human,
- 3:16it's not actually possible for us to be like Jesus.
- 3:20And now here we are entering our 12th and final sermon in this
- 3:25series on Jesus life in the gospels.
- 3:28We've been looking at Jesus life not just for proofs of his
- 3:33divinity, his godness, right? We we've also been looking at
- 3:38Jesus life as an example, the ultimate example of what is
- 3:44possible in a human life that's surrendered to the Father and
- 3:49empowered by the spirit. We've been looking at the gospel
- 3:54through a lens that takes seriously what Paul recorded in
- 3:59Philippians chapter 2 that Jesus didn't try to grasp onto his
- 4:04right to be God and use his godly power for his own
- 4:09advantage, his own benefit, but that Jesus this truly became a
- 4:14human with all of our limitations in order to redeem
- 4:19humanity from our fallen state and how all that happened.
- 4:25I don't think we can quite wrap our minds around but but we
- 4:29accept this doctrine that we call the incarnation right as an
- 4:34article of our faith. It's it's a non negotiable
- 4:39right. We might have different
- 4:40interpretations of of what the implications of that mean.
- 4:45But to be a Christian is to acknowledge that Jesus was God
- 4:50the Son who became a human being.
- 4:55But I think we have to be careful that in our desire to
- 4:59protect Jesus's nature as God, we don't downplay Jesus as human
- 5:06nature, right? It's it's easier to say that
- 5:09that Jesus was human, right up until that point that seems
- 5:12impossible for us. And that's where his Godness
- 5:16comes in, right? It's also easier to to separate
- 5:20the two in such a way that what we're really saying is that we
- 5:24believe Jesus had a human body, but his mind, his spirit, that
- 5:29was the part of Jesus that was God.
- 5:32It's not quite so easy to say that Jesus was God the Son who
- 5:38became a human being by giving up not his divine nature but his
- 5:44divine privileges, right, to become truly human.
- 5:50And that's hard because it raises the bar for what it means
- 5:55for us to be humans, right? It means that becoming like
- 6:00Jesus is actually possible. It means living like he did is
- 6:06actually Our Calling. It means that we have to define
- 6:11our human nature by what God intended when he created
- 6:15humanity and not just by what we've experienced living in a
- 6:20world after the fall. Because the reality is, yes, we
- 6:26live in a world after the fall, but we also live in a world
- 6:31after the incarnation, death, resurrection, and ascension of
- 6:35Jesus, not to mention Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured
- 6:39out on the church. And, and those things change
- 6:43everything. The passage that we read this
- 6:47morning from John chapter 14 has to be key to how we understand
- 6:54what Jesus was modeling for us in his life and, and the life
- 6:58that he's inviting us into, right?
- 7:02This this passage that we read this morning, it's part of the
- 7:05conversation that Jesus was having with his apprentices on
- 7:09the night in which he would be betrayed, arrested and tried by
- 7:14the Jewish leaders, right? These were some of Jesus's last
- 7:18words to those who had been the very closest ones to him over
- 7:23the last three years of his ministry.
- 7:26So I want to take a look at what Jesus is telling them and what
- 7:31he's saying to us this morning. The verses we're looking at
- 7:36today from John 14, verses 8 to 26, that they exist within that
- 7:43larger conversation that Jesus was having, right?
- 7:46That that night that Jesus is together with his disciples to
- 7:51celebrate the Passover together, what we've come to call the Last
- 7:56Supper, right? Jesus has already taken on the
- 7:59role of a servant and washed the disciples feet.
- 8:04He's predicted Judas's betrayal as well as Peter's denial.
- 8:12Jesus then shifts his conversation to preparing his
- 8:16friends for his impending departure from their presence.
- 8:20Right. He was preparing them because he
- 8:22knew that he was going to die. And it's in the midst of this
- 8:28conversation that our reading begins.
- 8:30Jesus has just told them that He is the way to the Father.
- 8:36And he said that in knowing him, they've seen the Father.
- 8:42And Philip tells Jesus, right, that that if he would just
- 8:47reveal the Father to them, everything would be good.
- 8:51They'd be content, right? And I think Philip there is one
- 8:58of the stuff he's been walking with Jesus for three years.
- 9:00He's he's all of us, right? Aren't there times we we say to
- 9:04God, oh, geez, if you would just show me or tell me, we'd be
- 9:09content, everything would be OK. But you can almost sense Jesus's
- 9:16exasperation with Philip in his response.
- 9:20And if the rest of the Gospels are any indication, right,
- 9:23Philip wasn't the only one who still wasn't getting it.
- 9:27He's just the one who gets named for it, right?
- 9:31But but Jesus says, really? After all this time with me, you
- 9:36still don't know me, Philip? Jesus then makes clear that
- 9:43anyone who has seen him has already seen the Father.
- 9:48The the the words that Jesus had spoken to them were not his own.
- 9:52They were given by the Father. The work he did was because he
- 9:57was in the Father and the Father was in him.
- 10:01And Jesus gets even more illustrative on this point in
- 10:04the next chapter when he uses the figure of the vine in the
- 10:08branches right as a metaphor for the way that Jesus's people were
- 10:13to abide in him and he would abide in them just like he lives
- 10:18in the Father and the Father lived in him.
- 10:21I almost chose to preach on that that passage this morning, but
- 10:25the Spirit kept me here in in chapter 14.
- 10:28The point is Philip asking Jesus to reveal the Father.
- 10:36Missed the point, right? It missed the point that the
- 10:41entire time that Jesus was with them, he had been revealing the
- 10:46Father to them. Everything Jesus said, the
- 10:50parables he told, the sermons he preached, the rebukes and
- 10:55encouragement that he gave, it was from the Father.
- 10:59Everything Jesus did, the healings he performed, the
- 11:04deliverances he did, the miracles that they saw, it all
- 11:11came from the Father, It all came from the Father.
- 11:15And it all revealed the Father to those who were looking, to
- 11:20those who are watching, to those who had eyes to see and ears to
- 11:26hear. And then Jesus says what might
- 11:32be the craziest thing recorded in all the gospels, at least in
- 11:38my opinion. If you've got a better one, I'd
- 11:40love to hear it. OK, you can.
- 11:42You can let me know after the service.
- 11:44But in verse 12, chapter 14, verse 12, Jesus says, I tell you
- 11:51the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I
- 11:57have done and even greater works because I am going to the
- 12:05Father. I don't know about you, but that
- 12:09just makes my brain explode a little bit, right?
- 12:13Not just the same works that they saw Jesus do, but even
- 12:17greater works. All the things that that Jesus
- 12:22had done and said over the course of those three years that
- 12:25his, his disciples had been walking with him.
- 12:28Jesus says that anyone who believes in him will do those
- 12:32same things and even greater things.
- 12:37I don't know about you, but that's not exactly been my
- 12:43experience of the church. Right?
- 12:50Which begs the question, why not?
- 12:53Why not? Why doesn't the church reflect
- 12:57this reality? Why don't we see people who
- 13:01believe in Jesus doing these things?
- 13:05Did God change his mind somewhere along the way?
- 13:09I don't think so. We see it in Acts, in the in the
- 13:13lives of the apostles. But not just the apostles, there
- 13:16are others too. Why don't we see it today?
- 13:20Why don't we believe Jesus? Right, We say we believe in
- 13:27Jesus. Why don't believe?
- 13:30Why don't we believe what Jesus says?
- 13:37In my mind, using the word belief and believe to translate
- 13:42the Greek words there of of pistus and pistuo.
- 13:46For those of you who are word nerds like me, using belief to
- 13:52translate that word, it doesn't quite capture what it means.
- 13:57Pistuo doesn't just mean a mental ascent to an abstract
- 14:02truth claim, right? Like the things we would think
- 14:05about in philosophy. We, we think about these things
- 14:08and we think about them, but it doesn't really do anything.
- 14:12Pistuo, it means trust, right? Think about when you're driving
- 14:19a car. How many of you drove here
- 14:20today? A number of you, right?
- 14:25And when you got in your car this morning, you believed that
- 14:29your brakes were going to work when you pushed the brake pedal,
- 14:33right? But it's not just a mental
- 14:37ascent. It's not just something we
- 14:39believe in our minds. You don't just believe in your
- 14:43brakes and that they'll magically stop you when needed.
- 14:48You trust them, right? So when you come up to the step
- 14:54sign, stop sign, you push your foot down on the brake pedal
- 14:58because you trust that the brakes are going to do what
- 15:02they're supposed to do. There's a belief undergirded by
- 15:07trust that gives you confidence to act.
- 15:12It's a trust so deep you don't even think about it most of the
- 15:17time. Or you just drive as if your
- 15:20brakes are going to work until they don't.
- 15:24That's a whole nother situation, right?
- 15:26But, but I think this is the kind of faith or belief or trust
- 15:32that Jesus is talking about here.
- 15:35What Jesus goes on to say that it's our love for Him that makes
- 15:41a difference. And this love must be connected
- 15:44to our obedience of Him, right? Our love for Him and our
- 15:49obedience of Him. If we say we love Jesus, we will
- 15:52do what He has told us to do. If we trust Jesus, we will live
- 15:59as if He will do what He said He would do.
- 16:03This is how we will know what things we're supposed to ask for
- 16:08when we pray. This is how we're supposed to
- 16:10know how to live out that trust that we say we have in Jesus.
- 16:16It's it's this kind of trusting obedience that creates the
- 16:21intimacy we see in Jesus life and which we need in our own
- 16:28lives. In verse 23, Jesus says, all who
- 16:32love me will do what I say, my Father will love them, and we
- 16:37will come and make our home with each of them, right?
- 16:42This is that idea of abiding in God, of drawing our very life
- 16:49from Him and knowing what to do and what to say because He's the
- 16:55one who's leading us and guiding us and directing us and telling
- 16:58us all this is possible. Jesus says because he was going
- 17:04to send the Spirit, it wasn't just something unique for Jesus.
- 17:10He was going to send the very Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit.
- 17:14The same Spirit that descended on Jesus in the form of a dove
- 17:19when he was baptized. The the same Spirit that led
- 17:22Jesus out into the wilderness and then back and into ministry.
- 17:26The same Spirit who empowered Jesus to do all that he did.
- 17:31The same Spirit who would raise Christ Jesus from the dead, now
- 17:37living in US. Jesus promised that the Spirit,
- 17:44that same Spirit, would come and not just live with us, but dwell
- 17:51in us. This is how God abides in us as
- 17:56we abide in Him. How will we do the same works
- 18:03that Jesus did, and even greater works the same way he did, right
- 18:12through surrender to the Father and empowerment by the Holy
- 18:16Spirit. It's through loving obedience to
- 18:20the voice of God, nurtured through through the spiritual
- 18:24practices that lead us into an intimate conversational
- 18:28relationship with God. And it's lived out through that
- 18:33unique combination of spiritual gifts that God has given to each
- 18:37of us by the power of God. This is why we spend time with
- 18:43God day by day, spending time with him, being with him so we
- 18:50can become like Him, learning to do the things he did, which
- 18:54empowered him to do the other things he did.
- 18:58It it. It's a different way to think
- 19:01about discipleship than what most of us have been taught for
- 19:04most of our lives, right? Mostly I was taught that we
- 19:08accept Jesus and his forgiveness of our sin.
- 19:12Then we keep coming to church every week and and we try to
- 19:15have a daily quiet time. Maybe we learn more about God,
- 19:20which often just meant learning more about the Bible, and we try
- 19:25to manage the sin in our lives down to just the acceptable
- 19:30ones, right? And if you try hard enough at
- 19:34that, you know, maybe God will make you holy.
- 19:39But what I've been seeing in Scripture recently is that Jesus
- 19:44actually believed that. That people can follow him, That
- 19:50people can learn to walk the way Jesus walked.
- 19:55That Jesus believed the relationship he had with the
- 19:58Father in his earthly life here wasn't just for him, but that
- 20:05through him we could know the Father in the same way he knew
- 20:11the Father. And that Jesus believed that
- 20:14people could be empowered to join him and the Father in the
- 20:18family business of restoring life to dead places.
- 20:26So this morning as we close the service and we close this
- 20:31series, I think Jesus is inviting us to respond in a few
- 20:38different ways. First, I think he's inviting all
- 20:43of us to follow him to walk like he did, like we see on the, on
- 20:51the pages of, of scripture and the pages of the Gospels that
- 20:54we've just spent these last three months reading day by day
- 20:58to give him our lives and, and learn to walk as Jesus walked.
- 21:05Maybe you've done that before, but maybe you haven't.
- 21:10And if you've never done that today, or if you've never done
- 21:12that before, you can do that today.
- 21:15You can begin to follow Jesus today.
- 21:19It's been said that the best time to change your life or to
- 21:23make a change in your life was five years ago, but the second
- 21:27best time it's today. You can start following Jesus
- 21:37today, or you can restart following Jesus today.
- 21:42Second thing I think Jesus or that God is inviting us to, is
- 21:46to surrender to Him. Maybe you've been following
- 21:50Jesus for a while, but there are some things that that you're
- 21:54beginning to realize you've been holding back.
- 21:59There are parts of your life that that you've been trying to
- 22:02hold on to control of areas where you want to feel free to
- 22:07do what you want to do, not necessarily what you know God
- 22:10wants you to do. Maybe there's some sin you've
- 22:15been struggling with, something you just can't seem to get past,
- 22:19something that you know doesn't line up with God's way for our
- 22:23lives. And you know it's keeping you
- 22:25from experiencing that intimacy with God.
- 22:28He wants you to surrender those things to him.
- 22:31He wants you to learn to know His voice, to walk with Him in
- 22:37in a deeper surrender. Third thing I think God's
- 22:43inviting us into this morning is to be empowered by his Spirit,
- 22:48right? Maybe, maybe you realize that
- 22:52you've been trying to follow Jesus out of your own strength.
- 22:57You've been doing a lot of things for God, maybe even good
- 23:01things, but He wants you to do things with Him, the things He's
- 23:07telling you to do. Or maybe you want to see God do
- 23:12those greater works that He was talking about through His church
- 23:16and maybe even through you. And you recognize you need the
- 23:23Holy Spirit to empower you to do that.
- 23:25It's not something we can do in and of ourselves.
- 23:28We need Him to show us the gifts that He's given us that He wants
- 23:34to show His power through to the world.
- 23:40So however God is speaking to you this morning, invitation to
- 23:46follow, invitation to surrender, invitation to be empowered by
- 23:50the Spirit. I hope you hear it as an
- 23:53invitation might even feel like conviction.
- 23:59But if you're sitting here feeling condemned this morning,
- 24:03like you're not doing enough or like you're not good enough to
- 24:06be one of those people, let me just say that's not the voice of
- 24:10God. God convicts.
- 24:14He corrects. He invites.
- 24:16He doesn't condemn. He offers grace.
- 24:22He offers himself. He longs to give you life as you
- 24:28learn to abide in Him. So as we close this morning,
- 24:34we're going to sing in just a minute.
- 24:35You're welcome to come and pray about any of these things or
- 24:39anything else that's on your heart this morning because God
- 24:42knows it's, it's heavy out there, right?
- 24:45Life is heavy these days. So let me lead us in a prayer
- 24:50and then we'll respond in song. And whatever way God's inviting
- 24:54you to respond this morning, I would encourage you to do that.
- 24:58Let's pray together, Jesus. It's hard to wrap our minds
- 25:06around the possibility that you would call us to do the same
- 25:12things you've done, the same works, even greater works than
- 25:17what you've done. But Jesus, we believe you, we
- 25:25trust you, and we trust that that you don't say that this
- 25:30morning for no reason. You're not holding up a bar that
- 25:37you know that we'll never be able to jump over.
- 25:42You're inviting us into your life, your way of living, and
- 25:53you've modeled for us the way that happens in our lives as we
- 25:57surrender to You, as your Spirit comes and moves among us and in
- 26:06US. You've got gifts you've given to
- 26:15each of us, things you want to use to show your power to the
- 26:20world. But Jesus, we don't just want
- 26:26your power, Jesus, we want your presence.
- 26:33We need your presence in our lives.
- 26:39Would you come and speak to us this morning?
- 26:41Come and meet us here in these moments.
- 26:51Jesus, we hear you calling, the call to follow you, the call to
- 26:56surrender to the Father, to be empowered by the Spirit.
- 27:04Would you help us cooperate with the grace that you're offering
- 27:10to us today? Would you help us join you in
- 27:13the work you're doing? Jesus, we give you ourselves
- 27:21this morning. We pray these things in your
- 27:25name.
