- 0:00So it's my basic understanding that today we're
- 0:03talking about mirrors? No. I mean, not literal
- 0:09mirrors, but of course I'm referring to the common
- 0:12phrase, that which is above is like to that which
- 0:14is below, and that which is below is like to
- 0:16that which is above, which is a phrase that was
- 0:19literally the backbone in many ways of the possession
- 0:21tapes. And also, if you really think about it,
- 0:25is a phrase that really... has been a thread
- 0:29to a lot of her work. Dweller, you know, it has
- 0:32a lot to do with that. Even films like Afterlife
- 0:35that we did a few years ago that didn't really
- 0:38have much to do with the esoteric woo -woo stuff
- 0:40was contingent and hinged on memory and nostalgia.
- 0:45So in that sense, had a lot to do with reflection.
- 0:48So reflections, reflections in all sense, literal,
- 0:51metaphorical, that's really... been at the core
- 0:59of all that we do if you let me finish today
- 1:07we are taking reflections to a less woo woo metaphorical
- 1:15space and instead grounding it and reflecting
- 1:19on our experiences literally above and literally
- 1:22below what have we experienced in the classic
- 1:28dare i say stereotypically spooky attics and
- 1:32spooky basements of haunted locations across
- 1:35the midwest that was a uh very eloquent and um
- 1:40very roundabout way of bringing up addicts in
- 1:44basements. I had no idea where you were going
- 1:48with that. I just really wanted to get under
- 1:50Angela's skin. I knew she would get very angry
- 1:53if I was the one that didn't know the topic this
- 1:57time. It's like, oh, we're talking about mirrors.
- 2:00It's like, no, no, no. And then you're like,
- 2:03but... In a sense, it's like, no, I mean, sure,
- 2:08I guess if you describe it like that, we're talking
- 2:12about mirrors, but no, we're talking about attics
- 2:15and basements. Welcome to our podcast, where
- 2:18we take deep dives looking at various topics
- 2:20through a paranormal lens. All right, welcome
- 2:25to this exciting new episode of Paranormal Lens.
- 2:29Brianna, you're shaking your head. Is that towards
- 2:31me or your dog off screen? Neither it was towards
- 2:35my mother. Oh. I thought it was going to be towards
- 2:39me for a second. Oh! All of us were wrong. That's
- 2:46the theme of this episode so far. We're setting
- 2:49something up. We think we know how something's
- 2:51going to go and it's just not how it goes. Not
- 2:55how it goes at all. Mm -hmm. Addicts in basements.
- 3:00Addicts in basements. Did you guys have a creepy
- 3:05attic or a basement either in your house or your
- 3:10grandparents' house or, like, anyone's house
- 3:12when you were a little kid? No. I was always
- 3:17creeped out by my grandma's basement and my parents'
- 3:27basement. For no reason, you said? There's not
- 3:33really any reason why I was creeped out. I just
- 3:35was every time I went down there. Neither my
- 3:38house or my grandparents' house has a basement
- 3:42or an attic. Well, where I live in Michigan,
- 3:48it is very sandy, so most houses do not have
- 3:52basements. We have crawl spaces. That's even
- 3:57worse! I feel like that's... People aren't really
- 4:01going in crawl spaces. No, yeah. But there's
- 4:04spiders. Yes, there are spiders, but it's...
- 4:09I don't go down there. It's fully sealed off.
- 4:14I mean, one of the entrances to it is in my bedroom,
- 4:18but that's besides the point. Do you ever hear
- 4:21something knocking from the inside? No. Can you
- 4:25at least admit that if that ever happened as
- 4:26a kid, you would be... scared of basements and
- 4:29crawl spaces? I would say no because a lot of
- 4:35critters can get into my crawl space. So I would
- 4:39probably chalk it up to an animal being in my
- 4:43basement. Bree was born a skeptic. I was born
- 4:47in northern Michigan. Did you know about CWD?
- 4:56Like the not -deer disease? As a child? Yes.
- 5:00Really? Yeah. How young do they give you a gun?
- 5:07I'm going to refrain from answering that question.
- 5:10Is there like a legal age? Actually, I don't
- 5:14know. That's why she's not going to say. Just
- 5:17because I mean, I've been shooting BB guns forever.
- 5:24My dumb ass already said baby guns. I can't even
- 5:29figure out how to shoot a Nerf gun. I don't think
- 5:32I'd do well. A Nerf gun? Girl. No, actually,
- 5:36I did shoot a gun once before, and it wasn't
- 5:41hard, I just didn't like it. But it was also
- 5:43a big rifle gun, and I think if it was a handgun,
- 5:46I would have enjoyed it more. Next time you're
- 5:49up, we'll give you some experiences. You want
- 5:53to hear something embarrassing? What? When we
- 5:57did our public ghost hunt at Festival of Oddities
- 6:00this year, I couldn't figure out how to use a
- 6:02temperature gun. I think we're all just bad at
- 6:10using guns. Except for me. Yeah. Brienne's good
- 6:18with all her weapons. Anyways. We'll move on
- 6:23from this. People are petrified of Brienne now.
- 6:29With all of her weapons that she stores in her
- 6:32haunted, not haunted, totally not creepy, totally
- 6:36not infested with spiders and critters crawl
- 6:38space she has in her bedroom. That is not where
- 6:41they're stored. I said they're totally not! Yeah,
- 6:45they're totally not. We're going to think they
- 6:49are, though. But they aren't. They aren't. I
- 6:52actually can't even get into the crawlspace without
- 6:54a lot of effort because my desk is literally
- 7:00sitting on top of it. So I have to move my whole
- 7:03desk, which you guys know, it has a lot of stuff
- 7:06on it and it has a massive shelf with a lot of
- 7:08fragile things on it. So it takes two to three
- 7:10people to move that desk to even get into the
- 7:13crawlspace. Is that to keep you out or something
- 7:16in? That's so creepy. It's like Scooby -Doo,
- 7:21you know, coming out of the crawlspace. That's
- 7:24something they do in Scooby -Doo. They put a
- 7:27desk, all the clutter, the shelf on top of the
- 7:29desk. You know, it's right out of an old cartoon.
- 7:33Yeah, it was just the convenience of the layout
- 7:36for my room that that is where my desk ended
- 7:39up. And, like, I thought maybe the space where
- 7:42the chair goes was wide enough to be able to
- 7:45still access the crawl space, and it turns out
- 7:47it's, like, two inches short. So, it's, like,
- 7:51just almost not an inconvenience to get in there.
- 7:56But... Oh, well. Anyways. Pivoting away from
- 8:01the, um... cartoonishly horrific setup you have
- 8:04with your haunted not haunted um not storage
- 8:09for weapons crawl space um angela circling back
- 8:13um you said you were scared of two basements
- 8:17as a kid for no reason i think there might be
- 8:20a reason perhaps psychologically because a lot
- 8:25of people are scared of the creepy dark cold
- 8:29basements below their homes. We were just, Brianna,
- 8:36Angela and I just hopped on a really quick preliminary
- 8:39investigation for a local haunted place a couple
- 8:42days ago, and they didn't have a basement, but
- 8:48stick with this. They got an attic, though. They
- 8:50got an attic, but stick with this because it's
- 8:52going to be really relevant to what I'm going
- 8:54to set up here. this property started off as
- 8:56just like a one room kind of garage makeshift
- 8:59like workspace and then over time as people started
- 9:02to live there and kind of turn it into their
- 9:04home and they started expanding so like every
- 9:05room literally was not there in the previous
- 9:08iteration of it so there was like one room for
- 9:11many years and like two rooms for another couple
- 9:13years um so it's kind of like a hodgepodge of
- 9:16like materials and um kind of building designs
- 9:20um and there is this weird effect i started noticing
- 9:24where It was like the thresholds of the rooms.
- 9:27I was getting kind of like off balance, kind
- 9:29of just feeling a little weird as well. And apparently
- 9:33there's a common report there. We were able to
- 9:35disprove a lot of these feelings people were
- 9:38getting because I started to notice that each
- 9:40room was just barely different in terms of temperature,
- 9:46just the way it was designed. Just you don't
- 9:50think about like the smallest things and differences
- 9:52in how they built each room. one room was like
- 9:5560 degrees the other room you cross over and
- 9:58literally you take two steps and now it's 62
- 10:00degrees and you take two more steps and it's
- 10:0257 degrees so the differences are so small but
- 10:07and and subtle but psychologically somehow you
- 10:12are picking up on it you you do realize these
- 10:15things and you know even when uh one one room
- 10:19that used to be like the garage space When the
- 10:22wind blew outside, you can kind of feel a slight
- 10:25draft of air that you didn't feel in the other
- 10:27rooms. So all these things, changes in temperature,
- 10:31different sloping of the ground, different ways
- 10:36the light comes in, all these things have an
- 10:38impact on you psychologically, which I think
- 10:40happens in a lot of basements that, you know,
- 10:44they're colder, they're darker. They're underground,
- 10:50literally. So a lot of these things could play
- 10:53into psychologically, especially as a kid, why
- 10:57these areas tend to be spookier and creepier.
- 11:03I mean, it goes into humans' innate fear of the
- 11:09dark and being in a basement where you're underground.
- 11:14Most of the time, the windows don't give off
- 11:18enough light or sometimes no light. So there
- 11:23is that inherent fear of the dark that makes
- 11:27things scarier. And that's how I've talked about
- 11:32doing investigations at night in the past. It's
- 11:35not necessarily that they're more active. It's
- 11:39just the dark is scarier. Our senses are more
- 11:44heightened. Yes, exactly. Our heightened... Oh
- 11:47my god, our senses are more heightened. My brain
- 11:51is malfunctioning. Well, and your heightened
- 11:53self, your higher self, is as equal to and equivalent
- 11:59as your lower self. As above, so below, you know?
- 12:04Sure. Just a tie -in to the beginning. But anyways,
- 12:08yeah, that's a good point. I mean, Angela...
- 12:11Much like you, growing up, it sounds, was a tough
- 12:13cookie and wasn't scared of the dark or scared
- 12:16of the basements. Oh, no, I was. Oh, you were.
- 12:20You said there was no reason why you were scared
- 12:22of the basement. That's a pretty obvious reason.
- 12:24There is no reason, but I was. You being scared
- 12:27of the dark is a pretty big reason why you might
- 12:29have been scared of the basement. I don't think
- 12:30there's a good reason to be scared. Oh, you don't
- 12:32know the impacts. When it's dark, and I'm not
- 12:36scared in other rooms, but then... Going downstairs
- 12:40is just a different story. No, that's it. It's
- 12:43literally a different story. You're away from
- 12:46everyone. You're alone. You're underground. You
- 12:48went below. Everything I talked about, about
- 12:51the changes in temperature, the, you know, floor
- 12:54might be sloped. The stale and stagnant air.
- 12:55Stale and stagnant air. Stale and stagnant. That
- 12:58darkness is perhaps darker and has more of an
- 13:02impact on you. And you're alone. And you're in
- 13:04the basement. you don't know the or i mean we
- 13:08know to some level but i don't think any of us
- 13:10understand really the impacts of you know depriving
- 13:15one of your senses like sight you know being
- 13:17in the dark that's good that's scary yeah next
- 13:23time i call you a tough cookie you should just
- 13:25say yeah i was tough like that i chicken out
- 13:33It was a lot of things. Remember when we were
- 13:35at the coffee shop and we were all going to be
- 13:40splitting up and you're the only one that was
- 13:42up in the attic. Yeah, you're talking about this
- 13:45coffee shop we investigated and they have this
- 13:46attic that's like super creepy. A lot of like
- 13:50footsteps and noises. Jeez. But you know what
- 14:02else I noticed in this coffee shop attic and
- 14:04in all attics? They're dusty. Yes. Which means
- 14:12there's a lot of ghosts flying around. Oh, yes.
- 14:16Orbs. Orbs. You know, anywhere with dust tends
- 14:21to be more haunted. Yes. Because... Brianna?
- 14:27Are you wanting me to say orbs? Yeah, I just
- 14:31don't want to go on my soapbox again, so please
- 14:33handle this one. Yes, because if you haven't
- 14:39listened to the Orbs episode, I think it's episode
- 14:42number three or something like that. Give that
- 14:48a listen, but essentially the gist of it is that
- 14:51Orbs, we highly do not believe in them. Are 90
- 14:58% of the 98 % of the time, probably a lens flare
- 15:02or a speck of dust that is reflecting the light
- 15:07from your camera. So. Dust is not a ghost. Orbs
- 15:16are not ghosts. Unless you see it with your own
- 15:19eyes. Yes. Unless you're, if you're seeing it
- 15:22with your own eyes, if it's. putting out its
- 15:26own light, that's different. But if you're just
- 15:30only capturing an orb on a camera and nothing
- 15:35else, it is more than likely not paranormal.
- 15:40Yeah. There's going to be a lot of people who
- 15:42disagree with us about that. I send it over to
- 15:45Brianna because she's a lot nicer than I would
- 15:48have been. As you can tell, just listen to episode
- 15:51three. I go on my soapbox. Brianna says it's
- 15:55most likely not. If you only saw it on the camera,
- 15:58it's not paranormal, but we'll move on. Anywho,
- 16:03it stands to reason then that these places are
- 16:09dark and creepy and dusty. You're already scared.
- 16:17You're most likely thinking every dust particle
- 16:19is a ghost. Places like these tend to be more
- 16:25haunted, even if they're not actually filled
- 16:30with legitimate hauntings. People, you know,
- 16:35this creepiness and this general attitude about
- 16:38these spaces really resonates and it lingers
- 16:41and legends form. That's true. People also say...
- 16:50Have you heard this, Bree? They say this on a
- 16:52lot of the shows that, like, attics and basements
- 16:54might be more haunted because, like, no one really
- 16:58goes in them. So the ghosts, like, to get away
- 17:00from the people, they go hide in the attic. I
- 17:03actually haven't heard that before, but, like,
- 17:07I feel like if you're not a more experienced
- 17:13investigator, that is what you would think. They
- 17:16say that all the time. But it could make sense.
- 17:20I'm not saying that's necessarily... It could
- 17:24make sense, but if you're kind of us, or specifically
- 17:30you, Ben, where you think most interactions with
- 17:36ghosts are not a residual, then it doesn't make
- 17:40sense for a residual haunting to be in a basement
- 17:43or an attic because they're trying to get away
- 17:46from us. But if you believe there's more than
- 17:51just a residual haunting, it is possible that
- 17:54they could be hiding out in a basement or an
- 17:57attic. That's interesting. That's a good... I
- 18:06never really thought of it that way. It's gotta
- 18:09be an energy that is so... It's beyond just an
- 18:14intelligent haunting then, because it... knows
- 18:19okay how about i frame it like this take a step
- 18:21back how many times do we get responses seeming
- 18:25seeming to indicate that like the spirits need
- 18:27energy right this is such a powerful entity then
- 18:31and so intelligent definitionally that it not
- 18:35only knows you're there it knows where all the
- 18:38people are and it's so confident enough to be
- 18:41like nah i don't need or want any of that energy
- 18:45i'm gonna go away as far it's repelled from energy
- 18:49how does that make sense yeah that reminds me
- 18:52of literally um kenyan's resort when we investigated
- 18:58there because the ghosts or the entity that we
- 19:03were interacting with that was down there in
- 19:06the basement and earlier in the night We had
- 19:11gotten a response or reply from someone to not
- 19:14interact. Don't go near them. They just don't
- 19:16want anything to do with you. Yeah, it was weird.
- 19:19It specifically said this entity's name and then
- 19:22it said don't go in the basement. He's chilling
- 19:24down there. He doesn't want to be disturbed.
- 19:27Well, we ended up finding this supposed entity
- 19:31later and he was in the basement in a back room.
- 19:35Way off in the back in like the darkest area.
- 19:40And it was a really cool interaction because
- 19:43whatever was back there was setting off our cat
- 19:49ball in response to some of our questions. After
- 19:53putting this motion -activated ball in this room,
- 19:55we started receiving responses across multiple
- 19:57devices, asking us to turn off this camera light
- 20:00we had set up on it. Nothing bad, just felt like
- 20:03we were invading its privacy. But as soon as
- 20:05we turned off this light, moved the camera back,
- 20:07and enveloped this room in darkness, The ball
- 20:09starts going off. We noticed it hasn't gone off
- 20:12at all. Okay. Man, chill out for one second,
- 20:16okay? Wait. Something is moving this ball, triggering
- 20:21it to light up. And then we had literally went
- 20:25to go recover the cat ball, and the picture of
- 20:30that individual was right there. In the hallway.
- 20:33Like right in the hallway. And we didn't know.
- 20:36It had said their name right there. And we had
- 20:39never looked at it before. So for us to get that
- 20:41name. And also have it be like. Corroborated.
- 20:49Like it just was wild. We went on a wild goose
- 20:52chase. Through the whole building. We were upstairs
- 20:54two floors up. Yeah we were on the second floor.
- 20:59When we got this person's name. And then it wasn't
- 21:02until like two, three hours later that we had
- 21:06went into the basement and had that interaction.
- 21:09It was a good hot second. It led us right to
- 21:12where they said he was just chilling because
- 21:15he didn't want to be around anyone. Yeah. And
- 21:19we just happened to, all the devices led us right
- 21:22there. We're like, okay, we'll take, you know,
- 21:25your word on it, spirit. And we put down a cat
- 21:28ball. and uh didn't even realize until after
- 21:32that was yeah yeah it was i thought you were
- 21:34going to talk about their creepy attic because
- 21:36they also had i think the attic was really weird
- 21:38the attic was so it was less it was less scary
- 21:41with the lights on i will say that because i
- 21:45didn't have to do it was terrifying the first
- 21:47time we went up there something had led us up
- 21:50there and i like I remember when we got up to
- 21:55the attic, we were doing a back and forth conversation.
- 21:59Like, I think I was using the dowsing rods. We
- 22:05had a cat ball sitting in front of a mirror up
- 22:07there, which that mirror creeped me out. No,
- 22:12no, no. Time out. We're not talking about mirrors,
- 22:15you said today. No, we're talking about the attic.
- 22:18But the mirror was in the attic. The mirror was
- 22:21in the attic. I can't just all of a sudden. I've
- 22:26only had this feeling one other time and it was
- 22:28at Howell Opera House. I was staring at the back
- 22:32wall of the attic and all of a sudden I just
- 22:35got this overwhelming feeling that something
- 22:37was standing there and coming towards us. And
- 22:40I couldn't describe it because I wasn't seeing
- 22:42anything. But everything in my body said something
- 22:45is standing there and is coming at you. Coming
- 22:49towards us. Yeah, exactly. And it. freaked me
- 22:52out like i've never had that feeling like i said
- 22:55other than at howell opera house when i was walking
- 22:58down the staircase and felt like there was something
- 23:01behind me and turned to look and even though
- 23:04i didn't see anything my body responded and acted
- 23:09like something was there stronger than adrenaline
- 23:12well it was a surge of adrenaline essentially
- 23:17That, oh my god, I just saw something that scared
- 23:20the living hell out of me, but I didn't actually
- 23:23see anything. There was nothing there. But my
- 23:27body reacted like something was there. We all
- 23:31reacted like that. We all felt like that. We
- 23:34were also all looking towards that specific area
- 23:37of the attic. We were like, something's right
- 23:40there. We were all, mid -conversation, stopped
- 23:44and looked at this one area and all just got
- 23:47this overwhelming feeling like something was
- 23:49suddenly there. That was just the craziest. But
- 23:55nothing was there. i think the cat ball did start
- 24:00like freaking out and going off at that point
- 24:02in front of the mirror and i think also at that
- 24:05point i'm like nope i'm done i'm going downstairs
- 24:08i'm over this i think i got a sense when the
- 24:10cat ball was going off like it was feeding off
- 24:12our energy because we started freaking out then
- 24:14it freaked out and then we freaked out more and
- 24:16then it freaked you know what i mean like it
- 24:18was detecting like our response like our very
- 24:21real response but i'm the person who had to do
- 24:24that solo in the attic that night yeah How did
- 24:28we determine that? Oh, we did Jenga. It was Jenga.
- 24:31Yeah. It was Jenga. I lost Jenga. And I ended
- 24:35up going to the attic, but we were, we were going
- 24:37to like, we were video. I was going to say, yeah,
- 24:42we were going to do a live podcast recording,
- 24:44but the internet was so bad. We couldn't. So
- 24:47you did a solo up there for nothing. Yeah, literally.
- 24:50But I, I wasn't by myself. I had my friends and
- 24:53I turned the lights on and it. was fine up there
- 24:56honestly it did not have the same feeling it
- 24:58did not have the same vibe like it was so different
- 25:03up there and i think i mean at that point i think
- 25:07it was probably around midnight one o 'clock
- 25:09and i think earlier when we had been in there
- 25:15it was shortly after we had gotten to kenyans
- 25:19kenyans in general it's it's this incredible
- 25:23little bed and breakfast um has incredible ties
- 25:27and very historic ties to the purple gang and
- 25:30uh they actually pulled out like um actual prohibition
- 25:34era bottles and artifacts from the walls so it's
- 25:37not like just one of those places where they
- 25:38say oh the purple gang pet no they actually like
- 25:40they had prohibition era shit in the walls so
- 25:43like how do you explain that they had um like
- 25:46the old secret passages and yeah as well and
- 25:49they also showed us where they had like a drop
- 25:52away floor um that went to the basement too so
- 25:57there's each room was named after a purple gang
- 26:01member or or a famous gangster in general yeah
- 26:04yeah yeah yeah all these gang el capone there's
- 26:08a jailhouse room too like all decked out like
- 26:10a little jail cell Any final thoughts on attics
- 26:14and basements? I know this might be on the shorter
- 26:16end, but... Do you guys have any other attic
- 26:19basement experiences that you want to share?
- 26:22I just thought this was a good excuse to talk
- 26:25about canyons. That's like the prime example.
- 26:28I mean, we've talked about the basement morgue
- 26:31of Stimson Hospital and nausea, and we've talked
- 26:33about the attic in Madison. multiple times so
- 26:39i don't think we've ever talked about the the
- 26:41basement in in madison but like that that you
- 26:46know it is also it has the hole where where someone
- 26:51was potentially buried and another spot you confirmed
- 26:55with cadaver dogs but also wasn't confirmed but
- 26:58have you noticed that that you do solos because
- 27:02you did a solo there too i also did a solo there
- 27:04and i I volunteered for that. I don't know why
- 27:08I volunteered for that. I don't know why my brain
- 27:11said that was a good idea. But I'm like, this
- 27:13will make for good content. And I'm an idiot.
- 27:16And I hated it. I forgot about that. Do a solo
- 27:25in a better place. Volunteer for like... I don't
- 27:29know. What's a good place? What's a place that's
- 27:31safe and magic? I don't know. The whole place
- 27:35is safe, but everywhere is haunted. Yeah, no.
- 27:40I don't... I'm never going to volunteer for a
- 27:44solo. I do not mind if I get a solo. I have to
- 27:50have that extra push of encouragement to do it,
- 27:53but I will never volunteer. That's why I think
- 27:55doing Jenga is a good way to make decisions on...
- 28:00Who does solos? Because it's anyone's game. Have
- 28:03we talked about that? Every time I do a Jenga.
- 28:07Have we talked about it on the podcast? I think
- 28:10we've mentioned it. I think we have mentioned
- 28:12it before. I'll mention it again just in case
- 28:14anyone knew. We have this colored Jenga and we
- 28:19bring out investigations and whenever we need
- 28:21a break or some levity we'll play Jenga and we'll
- 28:26assign each color of the pieces to a different
- 28:29haunted place. And if you lose the Jenga, if
- 28:32you make all the pieces fall, whatever color
- 28:35it was that you pulled that caused the tower
- 28:37to collapse, you have to go to that haunted location
- 28:39and do a solo. That's our little game. I think
- 28:43I have only ever lost Jenga once, and that was
- 28:47at Kenyon's. I think Ben has mostly lost Jenga.
- 28:52I lose every game, and I'm suspicious. You know,
- 28:57if you lose, like, you know, half the time, I
- 29:01feel like that's, like, okay, you kind of suck
- 29:03at Jenga, but also, like, fine. Have you ever
- 29:06lost Jenga, Angela? Of all the times that we've
- 29:09used it to decide? I don't think she has. I don't
- 29:12think she has. Not for, like, at haunted locations.
- 29:18Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Outside
- 29:19of haunted locations I've lost many times. Her
- 29:24cat looks like a sugar cookie. For the audio
- 29:30listeners, that's so random. The last line of
- 29:33the podcast is, her cat looks like a sugar cookie.
- 29:37There's no context. He's waving bye. Bye -bye.
- 29:42What a sugar cookie. Thanks for listening to
