Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good morning to you. We are out of the gates
- 0:02Speaker 1: on Sporting State, presented by Hard Rock Bet. This is
- 0:06Speaker 1: Huttony Withrow. He's Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton. A lot
- 0:08Speaker 1: to get to today across college football, NFL, and much more. Chad,
- 0:12Speaker 1: good morning to you. Good morning, Hutton.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's great to be here with you on this Wednesday morning.
- 0:16Speaker 2: So much to get to today. So much coach controversy
- 0:20Speaker 2: of just saying whatever is on their mind in the moment.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I love it.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We've entered a new era where coaches will speak their
- 0:26Speaker 2: mind freely at any given time, and it's not a
- 0:28Speaker 2: bad thing for us.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But Davo Sweeney's been doing that for a while, you know,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and he's now wanting fewer conference games so he can
- 0:37Speaker 1: play more big-time out-of-conference games for Clemson and, well, everybody
- 0:42Speaker 1: else in the ACC for that matter. Fewer for the ACC,
- 0:45Speaker 1: more for the SEC, and that means more money for
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference coming in.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and I noticed Clay talked about this yesterday on
- 0:52Speaker 2: his show where the SEC takeover is now about to
- 0:56Speaker 2: be in full effect with this nine-game conference schedule. This
- 0:59Speaker 2: weekend's a great illustration of that when you look up
- 1:01Speaker 2: and down at all the ranked-on-ranked matchups, A & M
- 1:04Speaker 2: and LSU, Tennessee and Texas, Ole Miss and Florida, Missouri
- 1:10Speaker 2: and Mississippi State. I mean, it goes on and on
- 1:12Speaker 2: and on of all the great SEC matchups you're going
- 1:15Speaker 2: to get this week and how that's going to affect
- 1:18Speaker 2: all of college football and the landscape. I see what
- 1:21Speaker 2: Dabo says here, and I think to myself, you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: he's not wrong. If schools would actually take it upon
- 1:29Speaker 2: themselves to schedule other unique matchups, right? Like a good
- 1:33Speaker 2: example is in the next couple of years, Tennessee is
- 1:36Speaker 2: going to play a home and home with Washington. That's
- 1:39Speaker 2: not a matchup I was ever expecting to see, right?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Tennessee and Seattle to play Washington, Washington and Knoxville to
- 1:45Speaker 2: play Tennessee. If you had, like Dabo was saying, seven
- 1:50Speaker 2: conference games, let's say from nine to seven, and then
- 1:53Speaker 2: you had five non-conference games, Let's say three of those
- 1:57Speaker 2: non-conference games were matchups like Tennessee and Washington or you
- 2:02Speaker 2: name it, right? Like we saw with Texas, Ohio State
- 2:05Speaker 2: or LSU and Clemson, where you get those types of
- 2:08Speaker 2: games and two or three of those, then you play
- 2:10Speaker 2: two nobodies that you're paying to come in and get
- 2:13Speaker 2: their heads beat in for four quarters. I'm okay with
- 2:17Speaker 2: that because it does give you a little bit of
- 2:19Speaker 2: variety and it's not just the same conference opponents over
- 2:23Speaker 2: and over. Now, The other side of that, though, is
- 2:26Speaker 2: you've got such large conferences now. So the SEC has
- 2:29Speaker 2: got 16 teams. The Big Ten has however many teams.
- 2:33Speaker 2: They have 20, I think it is now, or whatever it.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Is, 18 teams. Yeah. 18 teams, yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You have that many teams, you get these unbalanced schedules.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You get Penn State having a schedule that's befitting of
- 2:46Speaker 2: a team that is going to have to go out
- 2:48Speaker 2: of their way to try to lose three games this
- 2:49Speaker 2: year because their schedule is so weak. If you get
- 2:52Speaker 2: that bottom half of the conference schedule, schedule. So there's
- 2:56Speaker 2: no way to make it equal across the board when
- 2:58Speaker 2: you're doing that. And if you're playing seven conference games,
- 3:01Speaker 2: it's even harder to make it equal when you're playing
- 3:04Speaker 2: such a small percentage of the overall conference that way.
- 3:07Speaker 2: But again, Dabo's an easy punching bag right now. I
- 3:12Speaker 2: heard this though, and I'm like, yes, I like it
- 3:15Speaker 2: if teams did the right thing and scheduled tough in
- 3:19Speaker 2: the non-conference. But also I hear it as, Of course
- 3:22Speaker 2: the guy in the ACC is saying this. Because the
- 3:25Speaker 2: SEC is about to run away with it, with television
- 3:28Speaker 2: rights and money and interest and everything else, even if
- 3:31Speaker 2: their teams are losing more games because they've got more
- 3:34Speaker 2: head-to-head matchups.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And it's really the only logical counter that they have,
- 3:38Speaker 1: that Clemson specifically, the way he's looking at it, has
- 3:42Speaker 1: to the SEC moving to nine. Because Clemson had a mutual...
- 3:48Speaker 1: I don't know if it was home and home or
- 3:49Speaker 1: if this was going to be a neutral site game, Chad,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but they had four future games scheduled against Georgia. Clemson did.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And those have been knocked away because the SEC moved
- 3:58Speaker 1: to nine. And Clemson already has South Carolina every year.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Is it Notre Dame every year? Or is it just
- 4:05Speaker 1: on rotation? But they have those games on their schedule.
- 4:12Speaker 1: They were going to have Georgia on there as well. Well,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Georgia's now moving to nine games. And they don't have
- 4:18Speaker 1: the room on their schedule for the future matchups that
- 4:21Speaker 1: they had previously in contract had with Clemson to make
- 4:25Speaker 1: all of those work. So there goes one huge matchup
- 4:28Speaker 1: that Clemson has for their case for the college football playoff.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And meanwhile, you've got nine conference games in the SEC.
- 4:34Speaker 1: They're going to move to 20, 24, whatever they're going
- 4:38Speaker 1: to move to in the college football playoff. The SEC
- 4:41Speaker 1: already begins the preseason AP poll ranked in the top 25.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And when you have big wins, you have the ninth
- 4:48Speaker 1: conference game, you have weekends like this, you're going to
- 4:51Speaker 1: automatically start to stack up big wins, especially late in
- 4:55Speaker 1: the season, that gets you into the college football playoff.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And it pushes other teams out that haven't played the
- 5:02Speaker 1: tougher schedule, in theory. And seven games in the conference
- 5:06Speaker 1: for the ACC would allow Clemson to get one more
- 5:08Speaker 1: game and schedule outside. It's survivor mode, right? Especially for him,
- 5:13Speaker 1: who's trying to do it his way versus the college
- 5:16Speaker 1: football way.
- 5:17Speaker 2: So this is a total fantasy right now, the way
- 5:20Speaker 2: the schedules are balanced. But Clay threw out the idea
- 5:24Speaker 2: of the Big Ten SEC Challenge, the first week of
- 5:26Speaker 2: the season, where you got head-to-heads and everybody's watching that
- 5:30Speaker 2: first weekend, Labor Day weekend. It's all big-time matchups straight
- 5:32Speaker 2: down the board. Fantastic in terms of rooting interest of
- 5:37Speaker 2: just wanting to watch great football. and wanting to watch
- 5:39Speaker 2: big-time football matchups. It's not great for the head coach
- 5:42Speaker 2: who says, guys, a bowl game is still important to
- 5:44Speaker 2: my alumni. I'd like to get six wins, right? If
- 5:47Speaker 2: you're that coach of that program, it really hinders your
- 5:50Speaker 2: ability to get to six wins and get to a
- 5:52Speaker 2: bowl game. Now, separate discussion we'll have another day, Hutton,
- 5:55Speaker 2: is do bowl games matter at all anymore? Do qualifying
- 5:59Speaker 2: for bowl games matter? Does it really make a big
- 6:01Speaker 2: difference if we're 5-7 or 6-6 or even 4-8 or 7-5?
- 6:06Speaker 2: if the bowl games don't matter and which bowl game
- 6:10Speaker 2: we're going to go to. I think it still matters
- 6:11Speaker 2: to schools, to athletic departments, but it's diminishing returns on
- 6:17Speaker 2: bowl games and how much they matter. Dream scenario would
- 6:20Speaker 2: be Big Ten SEC Challenge in week one. You've got
- 6:24Speaker 2: nine conference games on top of that.
- 6:26Speaker 1: That's ten.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Everybody gets a bye week, and they get a second
- 6:30Speaker 2: bye week because they get to play Lamar or some
- 6:33Speaker 2: school that no one's ever heard of. and you get
- 6:35Speaker 2: to go win a game easily for homecoming. What if
- 6:38Speaker 2: every SEC team did what Georgia does with Georgia Tech
- 6:43Speaker 2: and South Carolina does with Clemson and Kentucky does with Louisville,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and you turn Thanksgiving weekend into a power four versus
- 6:51Speaker 2: power four rivalry game that is consistent every year? Now,
- 6:56Speaker 2: this kind of helps. Now, Dabo's already got it with
- 6:58Speaker 2: Clemson and South Carolina, but this does help. It almost
- 7:01Speaker 2: helps pull up the ACC, let's say. You know, let's
- 7:06Speaker 2: say Tennessee and North Carolina decide their rivals at the
- 7:09Speaker 2: end of the year.
- 7:10Speaker 3: It's a border war.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Every single year Tennessee will play North Carolina the final
- 7:14Speaker 2: week of the season on Thanksgiving weekend. So nine conference
- 7:17Speaker 2: games and then that. I'm just bringing that up as
- 7:19Speaker 2: one example, right? You could go and pick and give
- 7:21Speaker 2: every SEC team a power four rival. You know, Arkansas
- 7:27Speaker 2: could play Texas Tech as an example the last week
- 7:30Speaker 2: of the season. Pick those that don't already play that
- 7:33Speaker 2: in-state rivalry game Florida's already got Florida State. They don't
- 7:36Speaker 2: need one. Who else would you put in there? But
- 7:39Speaker 2: if you had that Thanksgiving weekend, think about that schedule.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Missouri and Kansas.
- 7:44Speaker 2: From Labor Day to Thanksgiving, you're going to open a
- 7:47Speaker 2: college football season on Labor Day with SEC Big Ten Challenge.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You're going to finish it with what essentially, Hutton, could
- 7:53Speaker 2: become the SEC ACC Challenge. I mean, you could keep
- 7:56Speaker 2: it consistent with that conference because you already have so
- 7:58Speaker 2: many Kentucky, Louisville, Clemson, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Georgia,
- 8:02Speaker 2: Georgia Tech. If you gave every other SEC team, you
- 8:05Speaker 2: tried to pair them up with an ACC team, or
- 8:08Speaker 2: you go to those teams out west that don't have that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: LSU probably needs to play someone from the Big 12.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Arkansas plays someone from the Big 12 that week. I
- 8:18Speaker 2: think that would be fantastic. Again, it's going to make
- 8:21Speaker 2: everybody's record look worse. It's going to make a lot
- 8:24Speaker 2: of those ACC teams' record look worse. It already does
- 8:27Speaker 2: when they're going head-to-head with SEC teams. But if we're
- 8:31Speaker 2: turning this into the NFL of the college game, which
- 8:35Speaker 2: increasingly it's looking more and more like it, I think
- 8:38Speaker 2: that's a good route to go. And I'm thinking about
- 8:40Speaker 2: what Derek Dooley said. It's good to mimic the NFL
- 8:43Speaker 2: in a number of ways. So the NFL has a
- 8:45Speaker 2: rule on clock management at the end of a game
- 8:47Speaker 2: on a review, right? This is written in the rules.
- 8:49Speaker 2: They've thought of every possibility that could happen to have
- 8:52Speaker 2: a rule for it. College didn't even have a rule
- 8:54Speaker 2: for what happened in Michigan, Western Michigan. Everybody just knew
- 8:57Speaker 2: what to do except for the Big Ten, apparently. So
- 9:02Speaker 2: something to think about when we look.
- 9:03Speaker 1: At these schedules. Well, the other thing, too, just for
- 9:07Speaker 1: purposes of the rivalry matchups and you mentioned the bowl
- 9:09Speaker 1: games and the bowl games matter. I've got two ideas,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and one of them I mentioned earlier this college football season.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Bowl games, if I'm like the Music City Bowl, for instance, Chad,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I try to move the bowl game, quote-unquote, to the
- 9:23Speaker 1: first weekend of the season. Have that week zero for
- 9:25Speaker 1: whatever reason. And call it the Music City Bowl, but
- 9:28Speaker 1: host a neutral site Big Ten SEC game. Tennessee and Michigan,
- 9:35Speaker 1: for instance, that is their dream bowl game here in
- 9:37Speaker 1: Nashville where we're based. They've never had Michigan in the
- 9:41Speaker 1: Music City Bowl. And they try to pull Tennessee once every, what,
- 9:46Speaker 1: three or four years because they know they're going to
- 9:48Speaker 1: have a great crowd. Imagine the Music City Bowl as
- 9:51Speaker 1: a kickoff to the season and the SEC Big Ten Challenge.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And it's Tennessee and Michigan playing to kick off the year.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That type of game is the type of challenge slash
- 10:04Speaker 1: bowl game that they're looking for and you don't have
- 10:07Speaker 1: to have a quote unquote bowl game that ESPN is
- 10:11Speaker 1: putting on TV on December 30th because it's great programming
- 10:15Speaker 1: but it's also a five or six win, seven win
- 10:18Speaker 1: team that that ends up being a game that the
- 10:22Speaker 1: bowl may or may not actually want as far as
- 10:25Speaker 1: team assignments. You get the marquee assignment that you want
- 10:27Speaker 1: right out of the gate and it's pre-planned. You know
- 10:30Speaker 1: three years in advance what you're getting. That to me
- 10:34Speaker 1: is a bigger moneymaker. And then the SEC championship game,
- 10:37Speaker 1: what happens to that? Well, I would make it, instead
- 10:40Speaker 1: of one game, two games. I would have the six
- 10:43Speaker 1: play the three and the five play the four and
- 10:46Speaker 1: the winners are guaranteed a spot into an expanded playoff.
- 10:49Speaker 1: The SEC has that power, and that extra game is
- 10:52Speaker 1: going to get them in the playoff anyway, is the
- 10:53Speaker 1: way I would view this. And then the one and
- 10:56Speaker 1: the two seed get a bye that week instead of
- 10:58Speaker 1: having to play and potentially get knocked down a seed
- 11:01Speaker 1: or two and potentially not host a home game for
- 11:04Speaker 1: the first round. I think there's ways to take over
- 11:08Speaker 1: even more moving forward, and there's ways to get even
- 11:11Speaker 1: more revenue for ESPN who could either outsource those games
- 11:15Speaker 1: the way they have with a few of the college
- 11:19Speaker 1: football playoff games or potentially get a bidding war going
- 11:25Speaker 1: for matchups and games that you can create that don't
- 11:29Speaker 1: necessarily fall underneath the television contract yet. We could expand
- 11:35Speaker 1: this out even more.
- 11:36Speaker 2: If you really just wanted to say, we are the
- 11:38Speaker 2: NFL and we're going to do what we want, what
- 11:41Speaker 2: if everybody played that weekend of the SEC championship game?
- 11:44Speaker 1: I mean, what's to stop the SEC.
- 11:46Speaker 2: From saying, okay, now 16 is going to play 13
- 11:49Speaker 2: in the conference and.
- 11:50Speaker 1: 15 is going to play 14.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And then it gives you an extra game to even
- 11:54Speaker 2: become bowl eligible at that point. Because one of the
- 11:57Speaker 2: big arguments is getting to a bowl late in the
- 12:00Speaker 2: year is it's an extra month of practice. So it's
- 12:03Speaker 2: great for those schools because everybody brings in guys as
- 12:06Speaker 2: early enrollees now. So it's really like an extra spring practice.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You get to bring in those freshmen. You get to
- 12:11Speaker 2: get them within your program. They're working out. They're practicing.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It's a bonus spring practice. I don't see how the
- 12:18Speaker 2: rules as we move forward, if we pass this legislation
- 12:23Speaker 2: and everything else, how you're going to be able to
- 12:26Speaker 2: keep that going. Because it feels like an advantage that
- 12:29Speaker 2: probably everybody should get. If somebody goes 3-9 this year,
- 12:34Speaker 2: they should probably also get that practice for the next
- 12:37Speaker 2: year like anyone else. What does the NFL do for
- 12:39Speaker 2: the worst team in the league? They give them the
- 12:40Speaker 2: first overall pick. In college football, in the SEC, being
- 12:45Speaker 2: the worst team in the league gets you less practices
- 12:47Speaker 2: based on the rules of the SEC and the NCAA.
- 12:51Speaker 2: So could you change it where everybody's playing the same
- 12:54Speaker 2: amount of games no matter what?
- 12:56Speaker 1: And we're going to watch those games. We are.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I mean, Arkansas fans– We're going to bet those games.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We're going to talk Arkansas later. Maybe Arkansas fans are
- 13:05Speaker 2: a bad example who just boycotted their team in their
- 13:07Speaker 2: first SEC game.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Whoever the next worst team is in the SEC this year,
- 13:13Speaker 2: they're still going to watch their team play, especially if
- 13:16Speaker 2: it's against another SEC team or someone else late in
- 13:18Speaker 2: the year.
- 13:19Speaker 1: There's a lot of possibilities.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Dabo got us thinking, Hutton, about this, and I think
- 13:23Speaker 2: it makes a lot of sense for the ACC.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I think the SEC's got it figured out.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Right now, but there are some matchups and some things
- 13:29Speaker 2: I'd love to see.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Do you think, though, coaches now would rather recruit or
- 13:33Speaker 1: practice during that time?
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think they'd rather recruit and have meetings. I don't know.
- 13:38Speaker 2: They don't want to, but they want to figure out
- 13:40Speaker 2: their roster, right? Like it's not just recruiting, you know,
- 13:43Speaker 2: the high school ranks or transfer portal. It's also, we
- 13:46Speaker 2: got to go make sure we've negotiated to get this
- 13:48Speaker 2: guy signed up for next year to see what our
- 13:51Speaker 2: roster and recruit their own roster. Right. I think the
- 13:54Speaker 2: extra practice is way less important. Now, the way we
- 13:58Speaker 2: look at football, it's the same over the years in
- 14:01Speaker 2: some ways.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I know in some ways it's very different.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Like, I mean, it would have been blasphemy to act
- 14:07Speaker 2: like those practices didn't matter 15 years ago.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
- 14:12Speaker 2: They got to 6-6, and now they get all these
- 14:13Speaker 2: extra practices.
- 14:14Speaker 1: It was. And this is going to be great.
- 14:16Speaker 2: And now I'm thinking, I mean, guys are showing up
- 14:18Speaker 2: on campus in the summer and contributing right away. They're
- 14:21Speaker 2: not even going through spring practice. Guys are staying injured
- 14:24Speaker 2: through spring and just working out with the team. Transfers
- 14:27Speaker 2: are coming in, not knowing the system, and they're immediately contributing.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Tennessee's a great example of this. They've got five new
- 14:35Speaker 2: starters in the secondary. The secondary's way better than it
- 14:38Speaker 2: was a year ago. They all got to campus from
- 14:40Speaker 2: different places in the offseason, and they're playing for a
- 14:44Speaker 2: new defensive coordinator, and it looks better than it did before.
- 14:47Speaker 2: There's other examples, I'm sure, of situations that didn't coalesce
- 14:51Speaker 2: as well. But you get my point. Everything we thought
- 14:55Speaker 2: about staying with a program forever and doing this and that,
- 14:58Speaker 2: It's kind of out the window now when everybody's transfer
- 15:00Speaker 2: portal is wide open.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And I would say, coaches would rather practice and coach.
- 15:07Speaker 1: They would want to practice. They need to be recruiting.
- 15:11Speaker 1: That's where they are at that time of year, going
- 15:14Speaker 1: into their bowl game, into the college football playoff, and
- 15:17Speaker 1: everything else going on. This is a big topic we
- 15:21Speaker 1: can actually get back into because it's great to brainstorm.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And it is about the money. It's about the revenue.
- 15:27Speaker 1: It's about the negotiating rights to these television aspects. And
- 15:31Speaker 1: it's about the SEC takeover. Dabo needs less ACC games
- 15:35Speaker 1: to schedule more SEC opponents now that they've moved to
- 15:39Speaker 1: nine games within their conference. We're presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 15:43Speaker 4: We have.

- 17:59Speaker 1: are the Vols ready for Texas? Is Knoxville ready for
- 18:02Speaker 1: Sporting State and Dixieland Delight Friday night coming up?
- 18:06Speaker 2: Dixieland Delight Friday night is going to be at Wagon Wheel,
- 18:09Speaker 2: 8.15 Eastern time. A bit of an odd start time
- 18:13Speaker 2: for the show. We were 7 o'clock last week. That
- 18:16Speaker 2: is not going to be the time. We're showing you
- 18:19Speaker 2: right there on the screen. It's going to be 8.15
- 18:21Speaker 2: Eastern time in Knoxville. Doors open at Wagon Wheel at
- 18:24Speaker 2: 8 o'clock. That is a late-night spot, and there's going
- 18:28Speaker 2: to be people streaming in. We're going to have great atmosphere,
- 18:30Speaker 2: good festivities. Hutton, I know you've got somewhere very important
- 18:34Speaker 2: to be this weekend. So Kelly Stewart and Ariel Epstein,
- 18:38Speaker 2: kind enough from On Tilt, they're going to be in
- 18:40Speaker 2: Knoxville co-hosting the show with me. We've got Levi Clark,
- 18:44Speaker 2: star catcher for the Tennessee baseball team, that's going to
- 18:46Speaker 2: join us live. Maybe a former Vol or two will
- 18:50Speaker 2: swing by as well. So that's going to be a
- 18:51Speaker 2: fun and spirited hour, again, at Wagon Wheel.
- 18:54Speaker 1: If you're going to the.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Tennessee-Texas game in Knoxville, 8.15 Eastern time coming up this weekend.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Cannot wait for that, Hutt. Going to be a great time.
- 19:05Speaker 2: And, yeah, the game itself, I think, fascinating because, on
- 19:10Speaker 2: one hand, Texas is fully prepped having that game against
- 19:13Speaker 2: Ohio State. I mean, they played one of the top
- 19:15Speaker 2: teams in the country. They came from way back to
- 19:18Speaker 2: win it, right? But I also look at Texas and
- 19:21Speaker 2: I think, yeah, they're the number one team in the country,
- 19:25Speaker 2: but they're down 20 points. late in the game in
- 19:28Speaker 2: the second half at home to Ohio State. I mean,
- 19:30Speaker 2: this game has a very different feel if Ohio State
- 19:33Speaker 2: just goes ahead and wins and Texas doesn't complete the comeback.
- 19:36Speaker 2: And I know about ifs and buts and all of that,
- 19:38Speaker 2: but you get what.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I'm saying here.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I don't think Texas is some invincible force of a
- 19:45Speaker 2: football team. They have been pretty average on the road
- 19:49Speaker 2: under Steve Sarkeesian, at times bad. That game a year
- 19:53Speaker 2: ago against Florida on the road is an example. They've
- 19:57Speaker 2: had some stinkers that they've pulled off on the road
- 19:59Speaker 2: under Steve Sarkeesian also. But from a prep standpoint, Texas
- 20:04Speaker 2: has seen it. They've done it. They beat a top
- 20:06Speaker 2: team in Ohio State. We posed the question, is Tennessee ready, Hutton,
- 20:12Speaker 2: because I think Georgia Tech might be really bad. Georgia
- 20:17Speaker 2: Tech lost at home to Colorado, who then got leveled
- 20:21Speaker 2: 41-7 by Northwestern after beating Georgia Tech. So I don't
- 20:26Speaker 2: know what Georgia Tech is. I feel like they're better
- 20:29Speaker 2: than that. I feel like they're better than what they
- 20:31Speaker 2: showed against Colorado. That was a weird game to open
- 20:34Speaker 2: the season on a Thursday night. But I don't think
- 20:37Speaker 2: they're very good. Tennessee handled business on the road. That
- 20:39Speaker 2: was a good win. I'm not trying to rain on
- 20:42Speaker 2: Tennessee's parade winning 45-24 and pulling away and winning easily.
- 20:46Speaker 2: It was never really in doubt in the second half.
- 20:49Speaker 2: But how have they been tested? Have we seen any
- 20:53Speaker 2: wrinkles yet from the Tennessee offense?
- 20:54Speaker 1: We really haven't.
- 20:55Speaker 2: No. They haven't had to do anything. It's been Furman,
- 20:57Speaker 2: Kennesaw State. and a Georgia Tech team that may not
- 21:00Speaker 2: be very good that they've played so far. So, Hutton,
- 21:04Speaker 2: I present all this, and I want to ask you,
- 21:06Speaker 2: from what you've seen from Tennessee and what we've seen
- 21:08Speaker 2: from Texas, we don't know if Tennessee's offensive line can
- 21:12Speaker 2: block Colin Simmons on the edge. We don't know how
- 21:15Speaker 2: the interior of Tennessee's line, which at times, surprisingly, has
- 21:19Speaker 2: seemingly struggled a little bit this year, how they're going
- 21:22Speaker 2: to block those massive humans in the middle of Texas'
- 21:26Speaker 2: defensive front. They've got a true nose tackle at 370
- 21:29Speaker 2: pounds or whatever it is. They've got some big dudes
- 21:33Speaker 2: across that defensive front seven. Linebackers are really good. Is
- 21:37Speaker 2: Tennessee ready to block and run the football? Texas said it.
- 21:40Speaker 2: They held Ohio State under 100 yards. Their star defensive
- 21:43Speaker 2: player has said, our goal is to hold Tennessee under
- 21:46Speaker 2: 100 yards rushing. Tennessee's averaging 298 yards rushing a game.
- 21:50Speaker 2: They're averaging 300 yards per game rushing. And Texas is
- 21:52Speaker 2: saying our stated goal is to make sure Tennessee rushes
- 21:55Speaker 2: for under 100 yards. If they do that, Texas is
- 21:58Speaker 2: probably winning the game because you're putting it all on
- 22:00Speaker 2: the freshman quarterback to throw the ball, right, in this game.
- 22:04Speaker 2: So can Tennessee's interior offensive line hold up and give
- 22:07Speaker 2: Deshaun Bishop and DeJuan Morris some running lanes? I'm intrigued
- 22:11Speaker 2: by this matchup. Arch has not been very good on
- 22:14Speaker 2: the road. It's a big opportunity for him to go
- 22:16Speaker 2: into his uncle's home and play well and show out
- 22:20Speaker 2: for pro prospects. we're trying to get on the sideline
- 22:23Speaker 2: for this game for pregame and Tennessee's working to do it.
- 22:27Speaker 2: When I made the request with Bill Martin at Tennessee,
- 22:31Speaker 2: his response was early in the week, every single pass
- 22:34Speaker 2: is being used by NFL scouts for the most part
- 22:36Speaker 2: for pregame field access to watch guys warm up. But
- 22:40Speaker 2: he said, check back on Thursday, maybe we can get
- 22:42Speaker 2: something done. But that's the big time game of a
- 22:45Speaker 2: lot of NFL prospects on both sides in this one.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And My question to you, Hutton, is, is Tennessee ready
- 22:52Speaker 2: for this? Is Texas fully ready?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Okay, so going into this, I jotted down a few
- 22:58Speaker 1: points of emphasis, okay, for Tennessee. Are they ready? And
- 23:01Speaker 1: it comes down to smaller questions within that box. First,
- 23:06Speaker 1: let me back up a bit. The way that Tennessee
- 23:09Speaker 1: has started the season. Mention Georgia Tech. To me, in
- 23:12Speaker 1: past years, that was a game, Chad, that would have
- 23:16Speaker 1: been a tight window ballgame game. For whatever reason. It
- 23:20Speaker 1: could have been just because Tennessee came out slow. It's
- 23:21Speaker 1: the first game of the year. They've got a freshman quarterback.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Things needed to work out, but they end up winning
- 23:27Speaker 1: the game. But it's not the concise body of work
- 23:31Speaker 1: that we saw against Georgia Tech where that game wasn't close, Chad.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That was the way you go and handle Georgia Tech
- 23:39Speaker 1: this year. As we've seen Georgia Tech play, right?
- 23:41Speaker 2: And by the way, the only real moment for Georgia
- 23:42Speaker 2: Tech was a punt block for a touchdown, which I
- 23:45Speaker 2: don't think you're going to see. I doubt you see
- 23:47Speaker 2: that ever again for Tennessee this year. I think they
- 23:49Speaker 2: probably cleaned that up and told the guy, hey, don't
- 23:51Speaker 2: hold the ball that long and get the punt away.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to happen again. But would
- 23:55Speaker 1: you agree, even like the game at Bristol or different
- 23:58Speaker 1: things that we've seen, there have been moments where you're like, man,
- 24:03Speaker 1: this is a big third quarter, big early fourth quarter moment.
- 24:07Speaker 1: The Georgia Tech game never got to that. He just
- 24:10Speaker 1: always felt in control. That's a great sign. Especially with
- 24:13Speaker 1: the way that Georgia Tech had planned that game and
- 24:16Speaker 1: wanted to play it at home. All that. True road game.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Now let's think about this. Is Arch Manning Gunnar Stockton?
- 24:26Speaker 1: Because I think this game comes down to a moment
- 24:28Speaker 1: like that. Where Arch Manning, we saw the way he
- 24:33Speaker 1: played against Ohio State at home. Now, does he do
- 24:37Speaker 1: that on the road in Georgia? a year where he's
- 24:40Speaker 1: got the experience under his belt now that the pressure
- 24:43Speaker 1: is still on him but it's all eyes are on
- 24:46Speaker 1: him yes but he's he's used to that now um
- 24:51Speaker 1: is he gunner stockton gunner stockton my point with him
- 24:53Speaker 1: is we don't talk about him enough but that dude
- 24:56Speaker 1: has ice in his veins he puts the ball on
- 24:59Speaker 1: the money on the road when it when it matters
- 25:02Speaker 1: most he makes the play for for georgia Is Arch
- 25:06Speaker 1: Manning that guy now in his college career?
- 25:09Speaker 2: Gunnar Stockton is Stetson Bennett 2.0.
- 25:11Speaker 1: There you go.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I think he's a good comp. You just know he's
- 25:14Speaker 2: going to deliver. He's got Moxie. His team's going to
- 25:17Speaker 2: follow him. He's probably more physically talented than Stetson Bennett,
- 25:21Speaker 2: but that's the type of quarterback he is. And I
- 25:23Speaker 2: think that's a great comp, by the way, because I
- 25:26Speaker 2: look at this Tennessee game early in the conference season,
- 25:28Speaker 2: much like the Georgia game a year ago, which I
- 25:31Speaker 2: think was Tennessee's first SEC game at home, And if
- 25:34Speaker 2: you remember, Joey Aguilar started that game, I think, like
- 25:37Speaker 2: 13 for 13.
- 25:39Speaker 1: He was great. Passing.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Remember, Tennessee got off to a fast start, got a
- 25:42Speaker 2: two-score lead. He was unbelievable on the first three drives
- 25:46Speaker 2: of the game. And we posed the question to Tennessee Redding.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Tennessee's quarterback turned 18 in June. Right. Joey Aguilar was
- 25:54Speaker 2: 24 years old. and had played a lot of college
- 25:56Speaker 2: football when he had that performance against Georgia. Are we
- 25:59Speaker 2: expecting the same from Faison Brandon against Texas' defense to
- 26:03Speaker 2: start this game?
- 26:04Speaker 1: I'm not, right? That's where this game is different. So
- 26:08Speaker 1: now I go to him. Is he a version of
- 26:11Speaker 1: Kamario Taylor? Yeah. Is he ready for this moment? I
- 26:16Speaker 1: tend to think his poise that I've seen so far
- 26:19Speaker 1: and the way that they brought along this offense where
- 26:21Speaker 1: you're right, we haven't seen a lot of flash plays
- 26:25Speaker 1: to the smash and dash type thing. I like the
- 26:29Speaker 1: way they've handled the quarterback situation. Not one time have
- 26:34Speaker 1: I thought, man, I'd like to see the other guy play.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Not one point. So I commend them to this point
- 26:42Speaker 1: on where they are with the quarterback battle and what
- 26:44Speaker 1: they chose to do. I think he's the guy. This
- 26:48Speaker 1: is one of those all spotlights on where everyone across
- 26:51Speaker 1: the country now will watch him play. And how does
- 26:54Speaker 1: he handle the pressure of the week, the magnitude, the spotlight?
- 26:57Speaker 1: Because Arch is going to be getting all the talk.
- 27:00Speaker 1: And now Faison Brandon can be the post-game conversation if
- 27:05Speaker 1: we want to go there. We'll see how that goes.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And then I think here's the real question. Is this
- 27:12Speaker 1: the first time, Chad, we see Jim Knowles unleashed pass rush-wise?
- 27:17Speaker 2: Right? Right.
- 27:18Speaker 1: You and I are driving back from Oxford, and you
- 27:20Speaker 1: made the comment about the pass rush and all the
- 27:22Speaker 1: different things. What do they do now with Sarkeesian's offense
- 27:27Speaker 1: and Manning playing quarterback with the experience in college that
- 27:30Speaker 1: we have not seen so far through the early part
- 27:33Speaker 1: of the season when they're playing the opponents that they're
- 27:36Speaker 1: boat racing anyway? What wrinkles do they have with the
- 27:40Speaker 1: experience they have at linebacker? And with the question marks
- 27:44Speaker 1: that we had going into the season up front, compared
- 27:46Speaker 1: to what we know Texas' front is like, how does
- 27:49Speaker 1: Jim Knowles get the most out of the defensive talent
- 27:51Speaker 1: that he has to confuse the Texas offense, to get
- 27:55Speaker 1: an extra possession or two, to control field position, just
- 27:59Speaker 1: to get Texas off the field when you know that Texas'
- 28:01Speaker 1: defense will be able to do that from time to time?
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like if you're Tennessee, especially at home,
- 28:08Speaker 2: you're going to need a couple of short fields. You're
- 28:10Speaker 2: going to need a couple of turnovers. Get a fumble,
- 28:12Speaker 2: get an interception, get a nice return on it. Do
- 28:14Speaker 2: something like that. If you're going to pull off the win,
- 28:17Speaker 2: it does feel like you're going to have to rattle
- 28:19Speaker 2: Arch and that offense to get something done. Because they've
- 28:22Speaker 2: got dudes. I mean, Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, they've got
- 28:25Speaker 2: dudes on the outside for Texas.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Let me throw in, too. Let's treat this like a
- 28:29Speaker 1: fantasy football discussion. If we're talking defense, special teams also
- 28:32Speaker 1: factors into your defensive score. Yeah. You know, like, can
- 28:36Speaker 1: the ball spark something special teams-wise, too, in that regard?
- 28:39Speaker 1: You mentioned running the football. Tennessee's known for doing that offensively.
- 28:45Speaker 1: You know, and I don't think that was a big
- 28:46Speaker 1: question mark for you or for Vols fans coming in. Like,
- 28:49Speaker 1: you liked what you saw from the running back position, right? Like,
- 28:52Speaker 1: the offensive line being able to run the ball was
- 28:54Speaker 1: not really a question going in. They've been able to
- 28:56Speaker 1: do that. That hasn't been a problem. But it could
- 28:58Speaker 1: be against Texas' front. How do we see Hypo handle
- 29:01Speaker 1: that now?
- 29:03Speaker 2: Well, and there's the chess match between Heupel and Will Muschamp,
- 29:09Speaker 2: defensive coordinator for Texas.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:11Speaker 2: The chess match between Jim Knowles, who is familiar with
- 29:13Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, and what he's going to do. Those fascinate me.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Joey Halsley also a big part of that for Tennessee's offense.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I mean, they have got– a couple things have to
- 29:23Speaker 2: happen that have not happened.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Yet this year.
- 29:26Speaker 2: They're going to have to truly get Faison Brandon's legs
- 29:29Speaker 2: involved with design runs in this game.
- 29:31Speaker 1: He's going to have to break some nice runs.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Or at least be a part of the rush game
- 29:36Speaker 2: to keep the sticks moving at some point. because just
- 29:40Speaker 2: handing it off is not going to work against Texas
- 29:43Speaker 2: over and over again I don't think it will but
- 29:45Speaker 2: Faison Brennan being a part of and adding that element
- 29:47Speaker 2: even in a scramble situation when he gets rushed he's
- 29:50Speaker 2: going to be a big part of this game the
- 29:52Speaker 2: other thing that's going to happen is he's going to
- 29:54Speaker 2: be willing to take some chances you know he's going
- 29:56Speaker 2: to throw a pick this game I'll go ahead and
- 29:57Speaker 2: call it he hasn't he hasn't thrown one yet this year.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It's going to happen in this football game. I saw
- 30:04Speaker 2: a guy against Kennesaw State that was check down Charlie.
- 30:08Speaker 2: He was never going to take a chance. He didn't
- 30:09Speaker 2: want to push the ball down the field. Very rarely
- 30:12Speaker 2: would he take a chance. I'm not saying you just
- 30:15Speaker 2: go throw a bunch of Hail Marys throughout the game,
- 30:21Speaker 2: or just as you're getting hit, throw up prayers the
- 30:24Speaker 2: way you would see from Will Levis or Cam Ward.
- 30:28Speaker 2: I'm saying you're going to have to Take the calculated
- 30:31Speaker 2: risk in this game and try to get a pass interference.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Try to pop a big play in the passing game.
- 30:36Speaker 2: You might have to throw when someone's covered at some
- 30:39Speaker 2: point and try to throw them open. Faison Brennan's going
- 30:42Speaker 2: to have to do that if Tennessee's going to win
- 30:43Speaker 2: this game. It can't be the same old, I'm just
- 30:46Speaker 2: going to throw it to the open guy and get
- 30:48Speaker 2: three yards or hope they break a tackle every single
- 30:51Speaker 2: time in the passing game.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Right now, I'm looking at the Heisman odds. Trinidad Chambliss
- 30:57Speaker 1: at plus 300 is the favorite. Arch Manning right now
- 31:01Speaker 1: is just in the contender phase at plus 1,000. This
- 31:05Speaker 1: kind of puts him right up there if he does
- 31:09Speaker 1: what people are thinking he does in the spotlight. And
- 31:12Speaker 1: I say spotlight. The noon kickoff thing is also interesting
- 31:15Speaker 1: to all this. Which team comes out and acts like
- 31:18Speaker 1: they're playing under the lights? Because there's an energy to
- 31:22Speaker 1: that that I think is not underrated but forgotten because
- 31:26Speaker 1: of the noon kickoff. With Texas and Ohio State, there's
- 31:31Speaker 1: an energy to that matchup where all eyes are on you,
- 31:34Speaker 1: you know, for the players. And Tennessee should come out
- 31:38Speaker 1: with that, with number one. Texas has already experienced it.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I think it's going to be loud. I think it's
- 31:44Speaker 1: going to be a great environment. I mean, Tennessee fans.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I'm really charged.
- 31:49Speaker 2: They always deliver. But I'm seeing a lot of videos
- 31:51Speaker 2: from Tennessee people like, oh, they say we can't get
- 31:53Speaker 2: loud during the day and it's only at night. And
- 31:55Speaker 2: they're posting videos of, Tennessee-Alabama at 3.30 in the afternoon
- 32:01Speaker 2: when the game starts. And I'm thinking, that's later in
- 32:03Speaker 2: the day. You know, three and a half hours later
- 32:05Speaker 2: makes a big difference for a start time. I'm trying
- 32:08Speaker 2: to think about a highly charged atmosphere at 11 a.m.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Central for a Tennessee home game. There was a game
- 32:16Speaker 2: against Florida with Butch Jones, I want to say 2014,
- 32:18Speaker 2: that I know was pretty loud. That was the Will
- 32:21Speaker 2: Muschamp game where he's, you know, They win late in
- 32:24Speaker 2: a close defensive battle, and we're going to send all
- 32:27Speaker 2: these people home upset, and he's talking trash during the
- 32:30Speaker 2: post-game press conference.
- 32:32Speaker 1: That's one that I remember.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I can't think of a lot of noon Eastern kicks
- 32:36Speaker 2: that were next-level atmosphere-wise for Tennessee football. So they're going
- 32:41Speaker 2: to get a chance on Saturday. This is going to
- 32:43Speaker 2: be the one that I think people remember for a
- 32:45Speaker 2: long time of noon kickoffs, and it's a shame. I
- 32:49Speaker 2: don't understand why with the television contract with ESPN– I
- 32:53Speaker 2: understand the thinking that A & M- LSU before the season
- 32:56Speaker 2: they thought would be a bigger game than Tennessee and Texas,
- 32:59Speaker 2: so they put them at night. And they also love
- 33:02Speaker 2: putting LSU at night at home. But once those teams lose,
- 33:07Speaker 2: can't you just swap? I don't know the logistics of
- 33:11Speaker 2: all of it. I know there's a lot of planning
- 33:12Speaker 2: that goes in, but I'm thinking Saturday night they should
- 33:15Speaker 2: have just said, okay, we're swapping the two. LSU, you
- 33:18Speaker 2: play at noon now or 11 a.m. in Baton Rouge. Tennessee,
- 33:23Speaker 2: you've got the night game. Seems like a pretty easy
- 33:26Speaker 2: fix to me.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I agree, man. I agree. I mean, there's no bad matchup,
- 33:32Speaker 1: but this is the one, and everyone agrees on that.
- 33:37Speaker 2: By the way, we've got the updated graphic. Our team,
- 33:40Speaker 2: thanks to Brooks Carter, hard at work. Did not give
- 33:43Speaker 2: him the updated time. Updated time now. Dixieland Delight, Friday night.
- 33:46Speaker 1: There we go.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Live show, 8.15 p.m. Eastern time in Knoxville. Friday night. Myself,
- 33:53Speaker 2: Kelly Stewart, Ariel Epstein. Going to be a blast.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Can I bring up one final question? I'm not hearing...
- 34:02Speaker 1: The way this game would have been sold five years
- 34:05Speaker 1: ago was UT versus UT. I haven't heard that yet. Really,
- 34:11Speaker 1: you know, it's just banning a guy. I agree with
- 34:14Speaker 1: the way it's being sold now. It's number one coming in,
- 34:16Speaker 1: but it's not UT versus UT. It's like the two
- 34:19Speaker 1: schools don't really care that much about being called UT.
- 34:23Speaker 1: And that's fine. But like both schools do refer to
- 34:27Speaker 1: each other as UT within one another or themselves, I guess,
- 34:32Speaker 1: where they're from. If you talk to someone from Texas
- 34:35Speaker 1: and you say UT, they think you're talking about the Longhorns.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I just haven't seen the marketing aspect of that as
- 34:41Speaker 1: much as I would. I'm kind of happy about it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I think Texas people, and just in general people in
- 34:47Speaker 2: the state of Texas, they refer to that school as UT.
- 34:50Speaker 2: More than Tennessee people, not just alum, but people in
- 34:54Speaker 2: the state refer to Tennessee as UT. So I think
- 34:58Speaker 2: Texas wants the moniker more. Tennessee is the real UT.
- 35:03Speaker 2: I mean, Texas, the entire state is speaking Spanish, if
- 35:07Speaker 2: not for Tennessee and the volunteers that came their way.
- 35:11Speaker 2: It's a state before them. It is the UT. I'm
- 35:16Speaker 2: sorry to people in Texas, but if Tennessee wants to
- 35:18Speaker 2: be UT, they are UT ahead of Texas. But I
- 35:21Speaker 2: would also say I don't think it matters as much
- 35:24Speaker 2: to people at Tennessee. I'm a Tennessee alum, and I
- 35:27Speaker 2: don't refer to it as UT. I refer to it
- 35:30Speaker 2: as University of Tennessee or just Tennessee. I don't say
- 35:33Speaker 2: UT often. I'll tell you one thing to never say
- 35:36Speaker 2: to a Tennessee alum.
- 35:37Speaker 1: It's UTK. UTK. That is an insult. It is not UTK.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Every other University of Tennessee has the last initial on it.
- 35:45Speaker 1: UT Martin. You go down the list.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It could be UT Memphis if you want, for all
- 35:52Speaker 2: I care, even though that's not the name of it.
- 35:54Speaker 1: UTC.
- 35:55Speaker 2: UT Chattanooga. It's not UT Knoxville. Or it's not Knoxville.
- 35:59Speaker 2: It's Tennessee University. or it is University of Tennessee, or
- 36:02Speaker 2: if you want to say UT, fine. And here's the
- 36:05Speaker 2: thing for Texas people. If you truly want UT that bad,
- 36:08Speaker 2: you can have it. Enjoy it. You guys in your
- 36:11Speaker 2: state with a bigger population and all of that, and
- 36:14Speaker 2: I hear Austin's lovely.
- 36:15Speaker 1: I've never been.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Have at it.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Call in yourself UT. Don't care. Take the UT. Tennessee
- 36:21Speaker 1: just wants the win on Saturday. Hey, coming up, primary
- 36:24Speaker 1: complaint and much more here on Hot New Withrow. Man,
- 36:28Speaker 1: it's going to be a... A perfect 10 college football
- 36:31Speaker 1: matchup with Tennessee and Texas coming up on Saturday as
- 36:35Speaker 1: well as Dixieland Delight Friday night. Perfect 10 show there.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Perfect 10 mortgage plays right into that. The name says
- 36:40Speaker 1: it all. Apply in 10 minutes. Close in 10 days.
- 36:43Speaker 1: The whole idea here is the mortgage that's simple, fast,
- 36:46Speaker 1: and fair. 10 minutes, start to finish, and you can
- 36:48Speaker 1: do it right from your phone. No stack of paperwork.
- 36:50Speaker 1: No sitting across a desk, as Chad Withrow has never
- 36:55Speaker 1: had to do and tries to avoid. No sitting across
- 36:57Speaker 1: a desk from a banker who's talking down to you.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I'll avoid that at all costs. I will stand up
- 37:03Speaker 2: and walk out on the banker who's talking down to me.
- 37:05Speaker 2: And that's not what you're going to get with perfect
- 37:07Speaker 2: end mortgage ever. What they're going to tell you is
- 37:09Speaker 2: date the rate, marry the house, put that on a t-shirt.
- 37:12Speaker 2: However you need to remember it, you need to remember it.
- 37:14Speaker 2: And if you're buying new construction, ask about the builder program,
- 37:17Speaker 2: builder funded rate buy downs that can get you a
- 37:20Speaker 2: rate the bank can't print. Date the rate, marry the house,
- 37:22Speaker 2: get the house you want now, refinance when rates come down,
- 37:25Speaker 2: Straight talk on what you actually qualify for. Built for

- 37:45Speaker 2: This advertisement is not a promise to make alone.
- 37:48Speaker 1: If you haven't signed up for the Hard Rock Bet
- 37:50Speaker 1: Sportsbook app yet, you can do that at hardrock.bet.com. Hardrock.bet.com.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Tutton and Withrow presented by Hard Rock Bet. And it
- 37:58Speaker 1: is time for primary complaint. Guys, my primary complaint this week,
- 38:03Speaker 1: Verizon Wireless. And the difficult aspect of their in-store ability
- 38:11Speaker 1: for customer service versus their 1-800 number. It is like
- 38:16Speaker 1: a separation of like Chad Fox Sports and Fox News. Okay.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Two separate channels, I'm saying. We know a thing or
- 38:23Speaker 1: two about that. Yeah, just two separate channels where if
- 38:27Speaker 1: you want to know what specials, what offers you specifically
- 38:32Speaker 1: on your contract with that company, what you're eligible for,
- 38:37Speaker 1: you have to go on the Verizon app. Okay, that
- 38:40Speaker 1: makes sense. On your account, it'll tell you. But if
- 38:44Speaker 1: I'm in-store, looking face-to-face with a real person, they look
- 38:48Speaker 1: back at me and say, you'll have to go on
- 38:50Speaker 1: the app to find out what you're eligible for. You're
- 38:54Speaker 1: looking at my account. I just gave you my phone number.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Tell me. So while I'm sitting there, I have to
- 39:01Speaker 1: go to my app and tell them. And then I
- 39:04Speaker 1: get the response, well, that's eligible online only, sir.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Oh.
- 39:09Speaker 1: That should be that it's through the company itself. I
- 39:12Speaker 1: should be eligible for that period, regardless of where I am.
- 39:16Speaker 1: And I'm there so I can physically get the phone
- 39:19Speaker 1: instead of having to order it online. I want it
- 39:22Speaker 1: that day. And I'm there so that I can set
- 39:25Speaker 1: up my phone faster in person with them on whatever
- 39:29Speaker 1: they're doing to. transfer all the information over. I would
- 39:32Speaker 1: have to bring it back in the store to do that.
- 39:34Speaker 1: So let me buy the damn phone there. That's my
- 39:36Speaker 1: primary complaint.
- 39:38Speaker 2: It is unbelievable to me that companies like Verizon or
- 39:43Speaker 2: anyone else employ people to show up physically at a
- 39:47Speaker 2: location and let's say this person's there from nine to
- 39:49Speaker 2: five on a shift or whatever, and just acts like
- 39:54Speaker 2: I'm not even a human. They almost act like they're
- 39:56Speaker 2: a bot when they're at these places. And I'm thinking, but.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Why are you here?
- 40:01Speaker 2: Why does this store exist? Why is Verizon wasting their
- 40:05Speaker 2: money to pay for rent in this strip mall that
- 40:07Speaker 2: you currently occupy?
- 40:09Speaker 1: If you as a.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Person can't help me and speak to me and log
- 40:13Speaker 2: into my account, And tell me what I qualify for
- 40:16Speaker 2: or help me out with this problem. It blows my mind.
- 40:19Speaker 2: And I get so frustrated with it. I quickly turn
- 40:22Speaker 2: around and walk out.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I did too.
- 40:24Speaker 2: When those things happen.
- 40:26Speaker 1: It's insane. Because you're there.
- 40:29Speaker 2: What else do I need to tell you about my
- 40:31Speaker 2: lack of satisfaction with the online process that I wanted
- 40:34Speaker 2: to drive here? Park at your establishment. Walk in and
- 40:38Speaker 2: talk to you about what I can do.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I looked up, Jack. I looked up how long I
- 40:42Speaker 1: had been a customer. I had been a customer of
- 40:44Speaker 1: Verizon since my junior year of high school when I
- 40:46Speaker 1: got my first cell phone. And they looked at me
- 40:49Speaker 1: and said, sorry, you're going to have to look online.
- 40:51Speaker 1: It's online only. And I'm looking at this girl just
- 40:55Speaker 1: thinking like, oh, thanks. I'll just go across the street to,
- 40:58Speaker 1: I don't know, T-Mobile or something. They would give me
- 41:02Speaker 1: better service and they would allow me to buy a phone.
- 41:05Speaker 2: It's almost like they're in cahoots with a coffee shop
- 41:08Speaker 2: next door in their strip mall to say, hey, go
- 41:11Speaker 2: next door.
- 41:11Speaker 1: To this coffee shop.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Let's say it's Crockett Coffee, and they have a physical location,
- 41:17Speaker 2: and go over to Crockett Coffee and sit there and
- 41:19Speaker 2: use their Wi-Fi, and you can do whatever you want
- 41:21Speaker 2: on the app the whole time. I can't stand it.
- 41:24Speaker 2: I can't stand it.
- 41:25Speaker 1: We go to a place for a reason.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Hutton, my primary complaint, speaking of going to a place
- 41:29Speaker 2: for a reason, when you go to a bar, it's
- 41:32Speaker 2: typically to drink or eat.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Or hang out with people, right? Yes.
- 41:36Speaker 2: But in general, people that go to a bar, especially
- 41:39Speaker 2: on a Friday night before a major SEC football game,
- 41:43Speaker 2: they're going to that bar to spend money. Everyone's running
- 41:46Speaker 2: up a tab. That was the case at Funkies on
- 41:49Speaker 2: the Square in Oxford on Friday night. This is not
- 41:53Speaker 2: me criticizing Funkies because their crazy cover charge was actually
- 41:58Speaker 2: way less than the bar next door. Funkies on Friday
- 42:01Speaker 2: night before Ole Miss-LSU-Hutton Charged a $ 60 cover charge.
- 42:06Speaker 1: At 5.30. For people walking in.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we walked in, Lutz would know, I'd say about 5.15.
- 42:13Speaker 1: 5.30 when we arrived.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Now, this was later in the evening at Funky's. You're
- 42:17Speaker 2: watching a video of some fast-forwarding that Gus and Brecca did.
- 42:22Speaker 2: You see how packed this place is. By the way,
- 42:23Speaker 2: this is just the lower level. There's an upstairs also
- 42:27Speaker 2: that we actually watched some of the game, the second
- 42:29Speaker 2: half of the game on Saturday night upstairs.
- 42:32Speaker 1: The place is packed out, upstairs, downstairs.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Everybody was hard to get up to the bar to
- 42:37Speaker 2: order a drink, to order food, to do anything because
- 42:40Speaker 2: people were there spending a ton of money. My primary
- 42:43Speaker 2: complaint is cover charges. Maybe I'm just old, but if
- 42:48Speaker 2: you try to charge me a cover charge and I
- 42:50Speaker 2: walk into a place, I laugh at you. I think
- 42:53Speaker 2: you're telling a funny joke. I'm like Ron Burgundy when
- 42:56Speaker 2: Veronica Corningstone told him that she wanted to be the
- 42:59Speaker 2: main news anchor. And he said, I thought you were
- 43:01Speaker 2: saying a funny joke. I didn't think you were serious
- 43:03Speaker 2: that a woman could be the news anchor. That's the
- 43:05Speaker 2: way I feel when you try to charge $ 60 when
- 43:07Speaker 2: I walk in.
- 43:08Speaker 1: And you saw my reaction. I kind of laughed.
- 43:10Speaker 2: I don't think I was joking with us because we
- 43:12Speaker 2: were walking in before the place was packed. And he said,
- 43:15Speaker 2: that'll be $ 60. And I'm thinking, oh, that's not going
- 43:18Speaker 2: to happen. And luckily for us, because we were there
- 43:20Speaker 2: doing the show, it didn't happen for us. And big
- 43:24Speaker 2: thanks to everybody at Funkies for being very nice. But
- 43:27Speaker 2: people that pay that, wow. Also, bravo to the bar
- 43:31Speaker 2: owners that have a packed house.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Every single one. Let's show that. Let's roll that video again.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Every single one of these people, with the exception of me, Hutton, Lutz, Brecca,
- 43:42Speaker 2: and Gus, have paid $ 60 to be there. Look at
- 43:46Speaker 2: the line waiting to get in to Funky's. That is insane.
- 43:50Speaker 2: And Hutton, the most insane part of Oxford on Friday night,
- 43:54Speaker 2: the bar next door, the library, the famous bar on
- 43:57Speaker 2: the square in Oxford, $ 300 cover. $ 300 per head to
- 44:04Speaker 2: get into the library that night.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Think about this, too. Memphis is a prime example on
- 44:15Speaker 1: Bill Street of this. Every single bar had a cover
- 44:20Speaker 1: charge in Memphis when we went. This was not a
- 44:23Speaker 1: big game deal. This was just a random Grizzlies game
- 44:25Speaker 1: against the Knicks. And, Chad, you and I are there.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Every bar's got a cover. And any time I go
- 44:32Speaker 1: to an establishment and I hear a cover charge, I'm thinking, wait,
- 44:34Speaker 1: did I go in the wrong door? Is this a
- 44:35Speaker 1: strip club? That's what I'm thinking. Yeah. Because no one
- 44:40Speaker 1: carries cash anymore.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Is someone doing magic or comedy in here that I'm
- 44:44Speaker 2: walking into? I feel like a show's about to happen.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Yeah. No one carries cash anymore. It's always debit or
- 44:50Speaker 1: credit card. Or you're using Apple Pay, something like that.
- 44:56Speaker 1: So you have to go to the ATM. Well, there's
- 44:58Speaker 1: a surcharge on the ATM outside the door. Guess who
- 45:02Speaker 1: owns the ATM? The bar owner. They can set the
- 45:06Speaker 1: surcharge for anything they want for you to be able
- 45:09Speaker 1: to get money out to then pay the cash. Cash
- 45:11Speaker 1: only at the door. Cash only at the door. You're
- 45:14Speaker 1: paying your cash. Well, then you use the debit card
- 45:18Speaker 1: to get money out. And I don't know what the
- 45:21Speaker 1: average person has on their debit or their credit or
- 45:24Speaker 1: whatever it might be. But if you're bringing some girls
- 45:26Speaker 1: in with you, you're probably paying their cover as well.
- 45:29Speaker 1: And by the time you get to the bar and
- 45:31Speaker 1: order drinks, you're going, what just happened? It was whiplash.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Because then you're paying for the bar. By the time
- 45:37Speaker 1: you get to the bar, you're not going to want
- 45:38Speaker 1: to tip the bartenders. Because you've already spent your extra
- 45:43Speaker 1: cash flow to get through the door. And the cash-only
- 45:45Speaker 1: thing that you're paying at the door, that's also... Not taxable.
- 45:50Speaker 1: It's brilliant. It's like a tip. Yeah, it's like a tip. Yeah.
- 45:57Speaker 1: It goes right to you, right to the house. I
- 45:58Speaker 1: guess you turn those in, but there's no way to
- 46:01Speaker 1: actually keep up with that, so to speak. And who
- 46:04Speaker 1: knows what the person at the door is doing. Again,
- 46:07Speaker 1: I'm skeptical of all of it, but the person who
- 46:11Speaker 1: owns the ATM outside the door is the bar owner itself.
- 46:16Speaker 1: And it's just another way to get the surcharge to
- 46:18Speaker 1: get more money. So the actual cover charge is way
- 46:20Speaker 1: more than $ 60.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Hutton, I remember being in college and sweating taking a
- 46:25Speaker 2: girl out on a date to Macaroni Grill.
- 46:28Speaker 1: And if I was going to have enough money to
- 46:29Speaker 1: cover it. And I know Ole Miss.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Kids are different, especially the guys with money that come
- 46:35Speaker 2: from money.
- 46:36Speaker 1: But can you imagine inviting.
- 46:38Speaker 2: A girl or her friend, a girl and her friend
- 46:40Speaker 2: or whoever out and saying, we're going to go to
- 46:42Speaker 2: the library. on the square the night before the LSU game.
- 46:45Speaker 2: And I got you guys. I got you. You've paid,
- 46:48Speaker 2: let's say it's a girl and her friend. You've paid $ 900.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Upon entering the bar.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Before you ordered a shot, purchased a beer, ordered something
- 46:59Speaker 2: to eat late night, you spent $ 900 to.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Walk into the library in Oxford, Mississippi the night before
- 47:04Speaker 1: the game.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Clay posted it, and I agree, and we need to
- 47:07Speaker 2: get to the bottom of it. But a great story
- 47:09Speaker 2: would be going behind the scenes with how much the
- 47:12Speaker 2: library or Funkies or anywhere in one of these college
- 47:15Speaker 2: towns makes before a gigantic game.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 2: We could probably get the scoop in Knoxville this weekend
- 47:20Speaker 2: from people we know that own bars that could tell
- 47:22Speaker 2: us what a Friday night or a Saturday and a Saturday,
- 47:25Speaker 2: just all day Saturday and Saturday night at a place
- 47:28Speaker 2: like Wagon Wheel in Knoxville that we're going to be at.
- 47:31Speaker 1: What does that look like? My cousin at Tootsie's can
- 47:33Speaker 1: clear around seven grand a weekend, just the weekend off
- 47:37Speaker 1: of CMA Fest in Nashville. That's their CMA Fest. Yeah.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Well, in a place like Tootsie's in Nashville, there's always tourists.
- 47:46Speaker 2: So they're going to make money many times during the year.
- 47:50Speaker 2: But the percentage of those bars just either breaking even
- 47:55Speaker 2: or making their profit over the course of seven or
- 47:58Speaker 2: eight Saturdays and those college football weekends– for home games,
- 48:02Speaker 2: I'd like to see what.
- 48:03Speaker 1: That looks like. Because they're not making a ton of money.
- 48:05Speaker 1: I get what they're doing. You know what it also does, Chad?
- 48:08Speaker 1: That cover charge keeps out the younger crowd. The average
- 48:15Speaker 1: age of the crowd at that time, it was young, younger,
- 48:19Speaker 1: but it wasn't all college bar.
- 48:22Speaker 2: It was a lot of alums.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I think so, too. No, we're hanging out.
- 48:26Speaker 2: We were not the oldest people at the bar. That's
- 48:27Speaker 2: what I turned to Hunt and said. I said, hey,
- 48:29Speaker 2: I'm thrilled to say that we're definitely not the oldest
- 48:31Speaker 2: people in this bar right now.
- 48:32Speaker 1: That was great. JT.
- 48:36Speaker 4: You guys talked a lot about money, and you just
- 48:39Speaker 4: brought up tipping. So mine kind of goes both ways.
- 48:42Speaker 4: I'm not going to name the name of this restaurant,
- 48:44Speaker 4: but after church Sunday, we go, and it's a place
- 48:49Speaker 4: that sometimes they bring you the food.
- 48:52Speaker 3: And sometimes you go get your own food.
- 48:54Speaker 1: They have a salad bar. Okay. How was Ryan's Steakhouse?
- 48:57Speaker 1: I swiped the credit card and it.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Has a thing that's very, very small that says 10%, 20%
- 48:59Speaker 2: or 25%.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Well, I try to start around 20% and you can.
- 49:01Speaker 4: Go up or you can go down if we're sitting
- 49:03Speaker 4: down at a 10%, 20%, or 25%.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Well, I try to start around 20%.
- 49:15Speaker 4: And you can go up or you can go down
- 49:18Speaker 4: if we're sitting down at a restaurant.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I'm just a normal tipper, right?
- 49:22Speaker 4: So I hit the 10% button, but it's not a button.
- 49:27Speaker 4: It just takes your fingerprint. So I accidentally hit the 25% button.
- 49:31Speaker 4: So this $ 35 meal where no one's bringing me my
- 49:35Speaker 4: food just turned into roughly 40-something And so I'm frustrated.
- 49:41Speaker 4: But on the opposite side of that, thank God, and
- 49:44Speaker 4: we were talking about how good their burgers are the other.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Day, Hunt.
- 49:47Speaker 4: Thank God now Sonic gives us the opportunity, since no
- 49:50Speaker 4: one carries cash, to tip. On the same hand, I'm
- 49:54Speaker 4: at Sonic a couple of days ago getting a $ 40
- 49:57Speaker 4: meal for my family.
- 49:59Speaker 3: And I have three options, four options actually. Don't tip.
- 50:02Speaker 4: They can keep the change of 80-something cents, or I
- 50:05Speaker 4: can tip one or two dollars. So how much of
- 50:08Speaker 4: a jackass am I going to be? Either you're not
- 50:10Speaker 4: going to get a tip, you're going to get 75 cents,
- 50:13Speaker 4: or you're going to get $ 2 on a $ 40 meal.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Why don't I have an opportunity to give them eight
- 50:18Speaker 4: bucks if I want to?
- 50:19Speaker 3: At least they're bringing me my food. We've got to
- 50:22Speaker 3: come up with a better way.
- 50:23Speaker 4: And maybe if it's, I have to do the math
- 50:25Speaker 4: and sign my name on a piece of paper, let
- 50:27Speaker 4: me do that.
- 50:28Speaker 3: But don't allow me an opportunity to click a tiny
- 50:31Speaker 3: little button. And then how much of a butthole am
- 50:34Speaker 3: I if I'm like, oh.
- 50:35Speaker 1: I just clicked 25% actually.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Let's back that down to $ 10 and vice versa. But
- 50:40Speaker 4: Sonic's got to give me an opportunity. You know, when
- 50:43Speaker 4: our burgers are $ 10, if I'm getting a meal for
- 50:46Speaker 4: four people, give me a chance to leave more than.
- 50:48Speaker 3: $ 2 if you don't mind.
- 50:51Speaker 1: It's so true.
- 50:52Speaker 2: And it's such an odd thing to sit there and
- 50:54Speaker 2: be looking into the eyes of the cashier when you're
- 50:57Speaker 2: ordering the food and click no tip.
- 51:00Speaker 1: In front of them.
- 51:00Speaker 2: As you have to interact with them, they have to
- 51:02Speaker 2: hand you the food, which I have done before just because.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I'm in the mood. And I'm like, you know what?
- 51:06Speaker 2: I just walked up here. You weren't very nice. I
- 51:09Speaker 2: ordered the food. And then I'm now, she turned, you know,
- 51:13Speaker 2: when they turn the thing with attitude towards you, oh, here,
- 51:16Speaker 2: finish out your order, sir. And it's immediately the tip screen.
- 51:20Speaker 2: I have occasionally, not often, but hit no tip during
- 51:23Speaker 2: that time. If not, if it's just a, you go
- 51:26Speaker 2: and order and get it, I'm doing the lowest one, 10, 15%.
- 51:30Speaker 2: whatever it is. And I'm, and I'm moving on, but JT,
- 51:32Speaker 2: you bring up something funny. If you accidentally hit 25%
- 51:36Speaker 2: and then had them go get a manager to go
- 51:37Speaker 2: in and change the tip as you have to sit
- 51:40Speaker 2: there away.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Like, I'm sorry.
- 51:41Speaker 2: I did not mean to give you that much in
- 51:44Speaker 2: a tip. That person had to go walk to someone
- 51:46Speaker 2: to get it corrected and get your money refunded. That
- 51:49Speaker 2: would have been a next level play by you.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:52Speaker 4: The wife just, I walked back, you know, carrying my
- 51:54Speaker 4: salad from the salad bar and.
- 51:56Speaker 3: The wife's like, what do you have such an awful
- 51:58Speaker 3: look on your face for?
- 51:59Speaker 4: And I'm like, I just gave 25% of the money
- 52:01Speaker 4: that I just paid for to get my own damn
- 52:03Speaker 4: meal to somebody that I'll.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Never see again. So thank you.
- 52:06Speaker 2: This is different now because everybody charges a tip with
- 52:08Speaker 2: fast food everywhere you go. But for years, Sonic was
- 52:11Speaker 2: one of the few places that would give you the
- 52:12Speaker 2: tip option. And I was so turned off by that being,
- 52:16Speaker 2: you know, you don't tip at fast food or fast
- 52:18Speaker 2: casual for years and years that I had a strict
- 52:22Speaker 2: no roller skates, no tip policy at Sonic. If the
- 52:27Speaker 2: car hop was on roller skates, I would give them
- 52:29Speaker 2: a tip for risking their life and limb by going
- 52:32Speaker 2: and delivering the food via roller skate. If they walked out,
- 52:36Speaker 2: I thought that was low effort, low energy, no tip
- 52:39Speaker 2: for that Sonic person. Now I have to tip every
- 52:41Speaker 2: Sonic person no matter what, but I would like to
- 52:43Speaker 2: bring back a no roller skate, no tip policy for
- 52:47Speaker 2: every Sonic visit.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Briefly, I have a theory on this, on the 25, 10, 15%.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Uber does this too. Because you don't put in five bucks,
- 52:58Speaker 1: you put in a percentage. I don't think the person
- 53:02Speaker 1: on the other end of that knows, JT, that you
- 53:04Speaker 1: put in 25%. They just see the dollar amount. They
- 53:08Speaker 1: won't know that it's 15.5 or whatever. I think these
- 53:12Speaker 1: businesses are taking a little bit off the top. I
- 53:15Speaker 1: think they're also getting tipped.
- 53:17Speaker 3: I have noticed a couple of times. I haven't done
- 53:19Speaker 3: the math. I'm ready to get out of there.
- 53:21Speaker 4: But some of the restaurants, when they tell you that
- 53:24Speaker 4: will go ahead and give you the numbers, they tell
- 53:25Speaker 4: you this is 15 percent.
- 53:26Speaker 1: This is 20. This is 25 percent.
- 53:28Speaker 4: Grab your calculator to crunch that math, because those numbers
- 53:31Speaker 4: are inflated. You're what you think that you're given is
- 53:33Speaker 4: 20 percent is usually around 22 or 23 percent.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Not every time.
- 53:37Speaker 1: But next time you sit down at a restaurant, you
- 53:39Speaker 1: think I know how to do that?
- 53:40Speaker 3: You think I know how to do that?
- 53:44Speaker 2: You just take the total and you times it by.
- 53:47Speaker 1: 20.
- 53:47Speaker 2: That's how you make it happen. You take out your
- 53:50Speaker 2: calculator app on your smartphone and you just take it times.
- 53:53Speaker 1: 20. That'll give you how much. I'd rather tips someone
- 53:56Speaker 1: to do that for me.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Hey, Greg, primary complaints today here on Huntley Withrow. Coming up,
- 54:02Speaker 1: you've got to hear what Shea Bieber had to say,
- 54:04Speaker 1: save for John Summerall at Florida. That's straight ahead right
- 54:08Speaker 1: here on Huntley Withrow presented by Hard Rock Bet.
