- 0:08In our busy world, family time is frequently neglected.
- 0:13It is vital that we give attention to our families while we can,
- 0:17and it is especially important to give attention to what God says
- 0:22in his word about our homes. For the next few
- 0:25moments, Let's join Scott Pauley as we open the scriptures and find
- 0:29God's message for your family.
- 0:39For this cause we also, since the day we heard
- 0:43it, do not cease to pray for you.
- 0:47Have you ever wondered what the greatest thing you
- 0:50could do for your family is? I mean, of all the things you could give
- 0:53them, of all the things you could say, of all the The wonderful places you
- 0:57could take them? What's the greatest thing you could do for your family?
- 1:00Well, I believe the answer is it's the same thing Jesus
- 1:05is doing now for his family. He's praying for us at
- 1:09this moment. Our Lord Jesus Christ, the great intercessor,
- 1:12is at the right hand of the Heavenly Father. He's praying for us. And when
- 1:17we enter into intercessory prayer, we are literally joining Jesus
- 1:21in his own work. I believe it's the highest level of prayer,
- 1:24and it is, my friend, the greatest thing you can do for those you love.
- 1:28Is there someone on your heart today, some family member, some great need?
- 1:32You know, I've discovered that through the years, oftentimes the felt needs,
- 1:36the perceived needs, are not always the great needs.
- 1:40Usually the real need is beneath the surface. It's beyond
- 1:43our understanding. Only God really knows what's in any of us.
- 1:47Only God knows what the greatest need is. And so I've learned
- 1:51through the years that when I pray for others, one of the greatest things I
- 1:55can do is seek to be led of the Holy Spirit as I pray and
- 1:59find some definite thing from Scripture to pray
- 2:03for those people. You see, you always know that you're praying in
- 2:06the will of God when you're praying in the Word of God. It's more
- 2:10than a routine, more than just having a prayer list that is a reminder,
- 2:14but praying definite spiritual things for those you love.
- 2:18The verse I read a moment ago, at least a portion of a verse,
- 2:20is Colossians chapter 1, verse number 9. And the context is the
- 2:25Apostle Paul sitting in prison, a man himself in need of prayer.
- 2:28And what's he doing? He's praying for those he loves.
- 2:32He's praying for those who are part of, of God's family. And he begins
- 2:36one of these great Pauline prayers. They're scattered throughout his writings.
- 2:39You should study them. They're rich and wonderful. But I think this
- 2:43prayer in Colossians chapter 1 is a wonderful model for us.
- 2:47It is a template for how we can pray for our own family members.
- 2:50Let's walk through it today. Make the list, will you? And then don't
- 2:54just make the list, take it and use it today. Pray these
- 2:57things for your family members. In verse 9, he said that he
- 3:01did not cease to pray for them. I think a great parallel to that is
- 3:04the fact that 1 Thessalonians, he said we're to pray without
- 3:08ceasing. So he's, he's doing that, staying in an attitude
- 3:12of prayer, but For what did he pray? Here's what we want to discover.
- 3:15He said, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge
- 3:20of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
- 3:24Number 1, how do you pray for those you love? Pray that they would know
- 3:28and understand the will of God. Pray that they would know
- 3:32God. Isn't that the greatest knowledge of all, is the knowledge of God?
- 3:36Colossae, where these believers were living, had been invaded by philosophy
- 3:41and legalism and lots of manward thoughts,
- 3:44much like our world today. So what is Paul praying? He's praying that
- 3:48their thoughts, their lives, would be lifted above all of that earthly
- 3:52knowledge and wisdom to heavenly knowledge, to God's
- 3:55wisdom. He just prays that God will work
- 3:59in them in a powerful way. By the way, in the previous
- 4:03verses, he talks about some good things that were going on in Colossae, and yet
- 4:06it seems he's still straining and struggling in his prayer for them.
- 4:10Could I remind you that when it seems things are going well, that's not
- 4:14the time to let up? That's the time to press through in prayer.
- 4:17There's always a spiritual opposition, and the battle is won
- 4:21in prayer. So begin by praying that those you love would know and
- 4:24understand the will of God. And then in verse 10, a second thing: that you
- 4:28might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing.
- 4:32Pray that they would please God with their lives.
- 4:36Notice what I did not say. We're not praying that they'll please us.
- 4:39All too often, I think even when we pray for those we love, we pray
- 4:43selfishly. We want them to do our will, what we want accomplished. No,
- 4:46Lord. Lord, I want them to please you.
- 4:50Whatever you want, that's all I want. Did you notice
- 4:54that Paul did not depend on his own talking or writing to form Christ's character
- 4:57in them? That's significant. And may I say,
- 5:00far too often, lean on our own words to shape the character of our
- 5:05children or to change the mind of someone we love.
- 5:08Friend, when you pray, God speaks. When you pray, God works,
- 5:12and your praying will get more done than all of your lecturing and worrying combined.
- 5:16So pray, though, please the Lord. And then at the end of verse number 10,
- 5:19he says, being fruitful in every good work and increasing
- 5:23in the knowledge of God. So here's a third thing: pray that they would bear
- 5:26fruit in the work God has for them. Whatever it is that God's given them
- 5:30to do with their lives, pray they'd be fruitful in it. And specifically,
- 5:33I believe we're praying here for spiritual fruit, for the fruit of the Spirit to
- 5:37be formed in them, for love and joy and peace and
- 5:40long-suffering and gentleness and goodness and faith and meekness and temperance.
- 5:44Isn't that the great fruit? And so pray they would bear fruit.
- 5:48And then number 4, in the same verse, pray that they would grow in their
- 5:51knowledge of God. He said increasing in the knowledge of God. And notice,
- 5:54this is more than just them being saved. These people already knew the Lord.
- 5:58We should be praying right now that those we love will come to
- 6:01love Jesus even more, that those we love will come to understand more of
- 6:05the love of God for them. Remember, the whole book of Colossians
- 6:09is about the sufficiency of Christ. Oh, how we need
- 6:12to grow in our, in our knowledge and understanding and appreciation for
- 6:16all that Christ is. Dear Lord, help every one of us grow in
- 6:20our knowledge of God today. And then a 5th thing on Paul's prayer
- 6:23list. In verse 11, he says, strengthened with all might according to
- 6:28his glorious power. Pray that they would learn to live in God's strength and power.
- 6:32Strength to resist the tempter, strength to press
- 6:36on in faith, strength to be faithful. Not strength that they can
- 6:39muster up or strength of some resource we can give them, but divine
- 6:44power. There's nothing like it. And then a 6th thing in the same verse.
- 6:48He says, unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness.
- 6:52Pray that they would learn to deal with every difficulty in life
- 6:56with joy. Difficulties are going to come. Man that is born of woman is a
- 7:01few days and full of trouble. We'd like to change all that for our family,
- 7:04but we cannot. I'll tell you what we can do. We can pray that
- 7:08they would not only get through it— that's the patience and long-suffering—
- 7:12but they would do it with joyfulness. That the joy of the Lord would be
- 7:16their strength. This generation is facing intensified spiritual opposition
- 7:20and persecution. How shall we pray? Dear Lord,
- 7:23help our family know so much the joy of Jesus that they have the courage
- 7:27to keep moving forward. And then one final thing, pray that they would
- 7:30develop a grateful heart. This matter of gratitude keeps coming up
- 7:34again and again, doesn't it? But in verse 12, giving thanks unto the Father which
- 7:39hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.
- 7:43True thankfulness will keep you from sin. Oh, my friend,
- 7:47when you pray, pray that your family will be
- 7:51nearer to God. Pray for spiritual realities. I hope
- 7:55you'll begin your intercessory prayer ministry today, this very day.
- 7:59I remember years ago hearing the story of a widow,
- 8:03a woman whose husband had been mightily used of the Lord as a preacher.
- 8:06And at the funeral, someone said, oh, we're going to miss your husband's sermons.
- 8:10And immediately she responded and said, that's not what I'm going to miss. She said,
- 8:14I'm going to miss his prayers. I wonder, will anyone miss your prayers
- 8:17someday? I believe this with all of my heart. I believe if we will stay
- 8:21engaged in intercessory prayer, God will work in us and God will work
- 8:26in them. Andrew Murray said he came to view prayer for himself as simply
- 8:30the means of God preparing him to pray for others. Would to God we all
- 8:33thought that way. Let's not be selfish in our prayers today.
- 8:37And maybe even now you think of yourself as a little spiritually cold and indifferent.
- 8:42The great missionary Henry Martyn said that he found in times of spiritual coldness and
- 8:45weakness, if he started praying for others' spiritual needs,
- 8:49it turned to meet his own needs. So why don't you stop right
- 8:52now today and pray for someone specifically? Take at least one of these,
- 8:56maybe take one a day for the next week, and let's pray these
- 9:00specific spiritual requests over those
- 9:03that we love. For more resources for your marriage and family,
