- 0:17Hello, everyone, and welcome to the After Ever
- 0:20After podcast, the show where we look at Disney
- 0:22sequels to truly see what life is like after
- 0:26ever after. I'm James, and joining me, as always,
- 0:30is Andy over there. Hello. How are you doing
- 0:34today, James? I'm not too bad, man. Nice. I'm
- 0:38not too bad. I watched Bambi 2 today. Why'd you
- 0:40do that? Oh, I don't know. Thought I would. I
- 0:44guess we'll talk about that instead, then. Yeah,
- 0:46alright, fine. I watched Bambi 2 yesterday, so
- 0:51I had to date nice and free, so I feel fresh.
- 0:53You probably feel a bit, like, Bambi -ed out.
- 0:57It's all in my head. Although, the first one,
- 1:01I know in the last show we said, well, I said
- 1:05that I had watched it. I'm convinced I have not
- 1:08seen that film. I remember the start. And then
- 1:12there's one point, so I took some notes for it,
- 1:15because stupidly I started taking notes as if
- 1:18we were reviewing that one. Right. And there's
- 1:21just halfway down my page, it just says, I don't
- 1:25remember any of this in huge letters. Yeah, I
- 1:28was the same. I don't think I've seen it either.
- 1:31I think I've heard of it, and I think I was confused
- 1:33that we've seen it. So we've both refreshed ourselves,
- 1:39or as it turns out, um just watched bambi for
- 1:43the first time for the first time yeah so before
- 1:46we jump into that uh last time we covered fantasia
- 1:49and we like to do a thing here that i like to
- 1:52call before ever before uh where we look at how
- 1:56the last films have uh tried to expand so following
- 2:01fantasia disney made one film before bambi which
- 2:04is dumbo are you familiar with dumbo you got
- 2:06much history with that one I do know... Again,
- 2:10it's one of those that I feel like I've definitely
- 2:13seen it years ago. There's certain parts that
- 2:17I remember. So I remember the pink elephants.
- 2:20Were there some racist crows? Yes, that's a very
- 2:24big controversy for that movie. And that is about
- 2:31all I can remember. He's got big ears and he
- 2:35can fly. Well, I think... What about you? You
- 2:39know what? If you listen to this, you're going
- 2:41to get sick of hearing this, but I think we're
- 2:43both going to say a lot for these early ones.
- 2:45I think I've seen it, but I don't know. I think
- 2:49a lot of these films are just sort of like, through
- 2:51cultural osmosis, you're aware of a lot of it,
- 2:54so it's hard to tell. unless you like remember
- 2:57specifically whether or not your memories are
- 2:59yours um but i have seen i did watch one of the
- 3:03ways that did continue is the tim burton live
- 3:06action movie which was 2019 ish yeah it was 2019
- 3:09sorry because it came out the same year as aladdin
- 3:11and lion king did it yeah uh it was it was like
- 3:14a march kind of buried uh because i think it
- 3:18went like march was dumbo and then april was
- 3:21endgame avengers endgame and then um so i got
- 3:25lost in the sauce a bit there and also it sucks
- 3:27so uh that's another reason why no one cared
- 3:30about it i was just about to ask you what did
- 3:33you think about it but now now we know like it's
- 3:36yeah it's whatever um i think it's another one
- 3:39of those like live action remakes where it's
- 3:40like if you look at the original Dumbo I'm pretty
- 3:43sure it's like 62 minutes long or something like
- 3:46that it's like airtight and then I remember the
- 3:49live action one was like bordering two hours
- 3:53like what are we doing here what they're just
- 3:57stretching it out for the sake of stretching
- 3:59it out they're doing a hobbit situation and there's
- 4:04like Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito, but it
- 4:08wasn't very good. And Eva Green? I don't think
- 4:12so. Not in that one. She might have been Dumbo.
- 4:14She might have been Dumbo. Sick. In Motion Capture.
- 4:18I think I read some... She's flapping her arms
- 4:21around as the ears. I don't remember her in that
- 4:25one, though. Maybe she... I think I read something
- 4:27about Eva Green. I had a quick... I can't remember
- 4:31what it is, sorry. Never mind, what was I going
- 4:34to say? You just read a thing and it said Eva
- 4:37Green and you were like, cool. Other than the
- 4:42live action movie, they did actually try and
- 4:44do a sequel to Dumbo, which was called Dumbo
- 4:482. And so this was actually getting made. And
- 4:53in 2001, I think it was, it was like the 60th
- 4:56anniversary and I think they had the new DVD
- 4:59come out. And they actually included a special
- 5:01feature like, look, here's Dumbo 2. Here's a
- 5:03sneak peek and here's some new characters. Blah,
- 5:05blah, blah, blah, blah. And then it got cancelled.
- 5:07John Lasseter cancelled it. Which, again, is
- 5:10going to be something you're going to get sick
- 5:11of hearing. He shut down the entire studio. His
- 5:15guillotine does not miss. Yeah, yeah. And, I
- 5:20mean... It came back to bite him. He got cancelled
- 5:23in the end. That's very true. But yeah, that
- 5:28one kind of surprised... I think this is the
- 5:30only one that happened to where it's like they
- 5:33were promoting it already and they've cancelled
- 5:35it. So God knows what was going to go on there.
- 5:37Yeah, that's crazy. I didn't even know that that
- 5:41was... It must have had some legs on it if they
- 5:46had footage to actually show in a... like behind
- 5:50the scenes kind of thing yeah i checked it out
- 5:52before this um i delayed the recording so i could
- 5:55watch the behind the scenes footage with dumbo
- 5:57too um it looks like it's just showing off like
- 6:01new characters like drawn still like here's here's
- 6:05a bear clawed like oh cool can't wait um so i
- 6:10don't know how far along it was um it seems like
- 6:13a bit of a weird thing to even be showing just
- 6:15character designs at that stage but I don't think
- 6:19anyone really cares, right? No. I was thinking
- 6:24about this before, actually. A lot of these early
- 6:26Disney films are very open and shut, aren't they?
- 6:29They tell a very complete story. 100%. I was
- 6:34thinking that while I was watching Bambi 1. I
- 6:38was like, this really doesn't need a sequel.
- 6:41This is an open and closed book. What are we
- 6:45doing? Bit of a foreshadowing there. Yeah. And
- 6:49then just... Well, maybe not. Who knows? Just
- 6:51for Dumbo, I've got two more things. This one
- 6:53really isn't that much. One of them was a TV
- 6:56show called Dumbo's Circus. I just looked at
- 7:00that. So this is actually... It looks quite wholesome.
- 7:02It's a little preschooler's puppet thing. A little
- 7:05Dumbo puppet. And, you know, they've got characters
- 7:07coming on doing little fun things. It's not really
- 7:10a continuation in any sort of way. You're not
- 7:12getting, like, new character arcs and stuff like
- 7:13that for, like, Dumbo and his mates. But it's
- 7:16a cute little anomaly. There's actually, you've
- 7:18probably heard of it, there's a YouTube channel
- 7:20called Defunctland, which I think kind of circles
- 7:24the same sort of circles as Jenny Nicholson and
- 7:26them. So they have a second channel that I think
- 7:29is called Defunct TV, and they've actually got
- 7:31a pretty interesting video called The History
- 7:33of Dumbo Circus that just goes through this weird
- 7:35little show, if anyone's interested in that.
- 7:37Oh, cool. I'm going to add that to my watch list,
- 7:40that sounds right up my street. And then the
- 7:42only other thing I could find, other than your
- 7:44generic Kingdom Hearts and... Disney Magic Kingdom
- 7:47and all that kind of stuff was in 1999 there
- 7:50was a game called Disney's Villains Revenge and
- 7:52four villains got shows for this and one of them
- 7:55out of nowhere was the Ringmaster from Dumbo
- 7:58which is obscene. I can't imagine anyone picking
- 8:01that as one of their top four. You know, the
- 8:03Mount Rushmore of Disney villains. Here we go.
- 8:08Oh yeah, my Mount Rushmore is the Ringmaster
- 8:16No one else competes. Yeah, that's it. There's
- 8:21no one else. Can't do it. The only reason I brought
- 8:24this one up is because I kind of like the plot.
- 8:28So the ringmaster's evil scheme is that he wants
- 8:30to alter Dumbo's happy ending. So he forces Dumbo
- 8:34to endlessly perform stunts for him. I don't
- 8:39know why that makes me laugh so much. It's just
- 8:41so mean. wow it seems like he gets like he's
- 8:46gotta have some like reality altering thing and
- 8:48all he wants to do is humiliate this poor baby
- 8:52elephant apparently though in the end the ringmaster
- 8:57is defeated when he's knocked unconscious by
- 9:01a well -aimed custard pie Oh, man. That sounds
- 9:06like a great game. I want to play this. This
- 9:08sounds crazy. What an asshole, though. Like,
- 9:11is it tight? Oh, yeah. Entire motivation is just
- 9:14to humiliate this poor little baby elephant.
- 9:16Who are the other villains? I don't know, actually.
- 9:20Ooh. I imagine one's going to be... Can I try
- 9:23and guess? You've got them. Yeah, I've got them
- 9:25right here. Let me guess. Because this one's
- 9:28out of left field, so I don't think it's going
- 9:30to be, like, Scar Jafar, like, the typical top
- 9:33four. I reckon it's going to be... Yeah. The
- 9:35evil queen from Snow White. Yes. Yes. Okay, good.
- 9:40Right. Well, one for one. I can't really count
- 9:42the ringmaster of that river. You know what?
- 9:46I am actually going to say Jafar. Unfortunately,
- 9:49you are wrong. God, who? Oh, I reckon Alice is
- 9:55queen. The queen of hearts. Yes. Well done. Yeah.
- 9:59Who is the other one then? Do you want one more
- 10:02guess? Yeah, go on. Disney film. Those are quite
- 10:07weird for a 1999 game, aren't they? Totally,
- 10:10yeah. So I'm not going to say Scar or Ursula.
- 10:13All the ones that jump to my mind are the 90s.
- 10:16Yeah. It's not going to be Man from Bambi. The
- 10:21unseen force of man's greed. It's just a gunshot
- 10:27in the distance. Oh, come on, come on, go, go,
- 10:35go. Captain Hook. Yes, well done. So it's Captain
- 10:39Hook, Queen Grimhilda, Queen of Hearts, and the
- 10:44Ringmaster. Even still, even with those being,
- 10:47like, to be fair, like, they're all quite iconic
- 10:50except for Ringmaster. That's still, like, out
- 10:52there. Yeah, it's very out there. Like, out of
- 10:57all of them. Like, even... Hook, I kind of forgot
- 11:00about Hook. I did, yeah. But I'm not the biggest
- 11:03Peter Pan head, to be honest, so. You know, I
- 11:09can't make that joke. Oh, no. You're not a Peterphile.
- 11:15I think I have to cut that one. No, don't. Keep
- 11:20it in. Oh, dear. Oh, wonderful. That's all I've
- 11:26got for you regarding Wardumbo. Cool. And that
- 11:30was the one right before Bambi. Yeah, that's
- 11:34the only one between Fantasia and Bambi. So straight
- 11:38into Bambi, I guess. Yeah. So having re -watched
- 11:44it, what did you think of Bambi? We'll go over
- 11:51our quick thoughts of the OG. I think there's
- 11:56two points to summarize it. The first point is
- 11:59that it's overwhelmingly charming. It's just
- 12:02so nice and lovely. And I was getting very worried
- 12:06because the only thing that I think anyone remembers
- 12:10about Mambi is that his mother's going to get
- 12:12shot. Spoiler alert. Yeah. Oh, no. But the other
- 12:16thing I know it is, and this turns out to be
- 12:19some sort of like Mandela effect that other people
- 12:21have had. I thought the mother died in the first
- 12:2410 minutes, and she doesn't. She dies maybe,
- 12:28like, 40 minutes in. Yeah, I was thinking the
- 12:32exact same. Like, I was convinced that the first
- 12:37time that they went out, that was when she was
- 12:40going to bite the bullet. There's a few close
- 12:43calls. It was the most tense 40 minutes of cinematic
- 12:46experience I've ever had. I know she's dying
- 12:50soon! she's gonna bite the bullet soon what did
- 12:55you think um yeah i i understand why it's such
- 12:58a classic um it's very beautiful um i think some
- 13:04of the things that i noted down the um the painted
- 13:07forest oh my god because they're all like beautifully
- 13:10hand -painted backgrounds wow stunning really
- 13:14really pretty um And they used a rain layer over
- 13:19the footage and that makes much more sense with
- 13:23the... when we were talking about in Fantasia
- 13:272000, how they used scans of the rain. It's just
- 13:31a layer that they put on top of it. So they probably
- 13:34just shoved that over the paintings. Yes. The
- 13:38cells. And that means that they can isolate it,
- 13:42scan it, and then put it on to Fantasia 2000.
- 13:45So as soon as I saw that, I was like, oh, sick.
- 13:48Yeah. That's how they did it. So have you seen
- 13:51the rig they used for this? It's quite nutty.
- 13:55No. A rig. Well, I'm probably not using the industry
- 13:59terms, James. But it's called a multi -plane
- 14:04camera that they designed for it. And essentially
- 14:06the idea was, it's all like, like you say, like
- 14:09these kind of clear parts of different parts
- 14:12painted on. And the idea was like, if you ever
- 14:14paint in a background and you zoom in, the moon's
- 14:19going to get bigger. It shouldn't, because that's
- 14:21not how the moon works. So instead, the moon
- 14:23would be on the back panel, and then you have
- 14:25another panel on top, which is the hills, and
- 14:27then another panel on top, which is, like, I
- 14:29don't know, houses, and then a panel on top,
- 14:30which is, like, the trees in the foreground.
- 14:32I don't know if I'm explaining that very well.
- 14:33So it kind of, yeah, it kind of allows for, like,
- 14:36parallax. Yeah. To be able to be done kind of
- 14:40thing. That's really clever. Yeah, essentially,
- 14:42they're basically making, like, a big kind of,
- 14:44like, pop -up. 3d book kind of thing but a lot
- 14:47more elaborate and that opening shot it really
- 14:50pays off like it looks insane oh yeah looks stunning
- 14:53and yeah that holds up for the rest of the film
- 14:56i think it's absolutely beautiful the thing that
- 14:58i was thinking is this is essentially a big music
- 15:03video that they had to so it's two things it's
- 15:07a music video and it's also a nature documentary
- 15:11and then They did those two parts and then they
- 15:15were like, well, we can't release this. Let's
- 15:17put some story in there. And they came up with,
- 15:20they were like, what can we put in? Oh, Bambi.
- 15:22Bambi, the story of the prince or whatever it's
- 15:25called, the book. And they just animated that
- 15:28because I think they wanted to do a nature documentary
- 15:31and that's it. it's what it feels like man when
- 15:35i was watching it i was like wow this is a beautiful
- 15:37beautiful animated nature documentary with a
- 15:42bit of story thrown in so you weren't that invested
- 15:45then i guess it's fine yeah it's all right it
- 15:50didn't grab me half as much as i thought it was
- 15:55going to there's a couple of parts that really
- 15:57did the fight scene is unbelievable and it's
- 16:02beautiful and it's so like the fight scene with
- 16:05um him and the rival stag um is is yeah is is
- 16:12sick yeah the lighting's gorgeous the animation's
- 16:15really beautiful and everything um and just after
- 16:18that is when i wrote i don't remember any of
- 16:21this yeah i didn't remember him becoming like
- 16:24an adolescent at all no me neither not at all
- 16:27i also wrote bambi has horrible long legs and
- 16:29i hate it oh so if if anyone like us too gangly
- 16:36that's not very nice he's just a little lad they're
- 16:39he's growing into the lad but they're very they're
- 16:43very gangly i don't like i like them uh so for
- 16:47anyone like us who doesn't quite remember what
- 16:50this is there's not really much to recap it's
- 16:52like basically like It opens with Bambi being
- 16:55born. He's the young prince of the forest because
- 16:58his dad was a prince deer. We follow him as a
- 17:01little child. He meets Thumper, a rabbit, and
- 17:04he meets Flowers, a skunk, and they're his mates.
- 17:07And then one day, and I wrote this quote down
- 17:10because I thought it was sick. His mother goes,
- 17:12man was in the forest in the most haunting possible
- 17:16way. I was like, oh. Ooh, I didn't like that.
- 17:18I made my skin crawl. And man does enter the
- 17:22forest. It shoots his mother dead. And we kind
- 17:25of cut to Bambi as a... this is quite far in
- 17:28the film it's like 40 minutes in the film like
- 17:29i say and then we cut to bambi as like an adolescent
- 17:32in like these young adult stages where once again
- 17:35man does enter the forest and he has to escape
- 17:37and help his friends and the film kind of just
- 17:39ends it's like a day in the life kind of film
- 17:42like you say yeah it really is yeah it's lovely
- 17:45it's nice but it wasn't my jam yeah i i enjoyed
- 17:49my time but i didn't like I wouldn't rank it
- 17:54super high. I think it's fine. I really, really,
- 17:56really like it. I was enamored. Really? Yeah,
- 18:00I was absolutely drawn in. I thought it was so
- 18:03wholesome. I think the bit where I realized like,
- 18:06oh man, I think I love this was, I think he's
- 18:08playing in the flowers and he comes nose to nose
- 18:10with the skunk flower and they kind of like raise
- 18:13out together and they just, I don't know, they
- 18:15look at each other like so adorably. I was like,
- 18:17oh man, I could just sit here and watch these
- 18:20guys for another two hours. And I did. You just
- 18:23had a lovely, wholesome time. Yeah, I just thought
- 18:26it was really sweet and the beautiful animation
- 18:28helps. The characters were all really fun. I
- 18:31think the music was gorgeous as well. There's
- 18:34a quick note I've just written down. The music
- 18:36was actually by Frank Churchill, who actually
- 18:39passed away before this released, which is a
- 18:41shame because it was amazing music. Was all of
- 18:44the music made for this? Because April Shower...
- 18:51I had no idea that was from this. I'm pretty
- 18:55sure April Shower is made for this. I'll double
- 18:58check for you, actually. No way. I do forget
- 19:01how old this film is because it's 1942. So, of
- 19:07course, that could be where it's from. It probably
- 19:10is. But yeah, I had absolutely no idea that that's
- 19:14where that song came from. I think that's like
- 19:16other than the mother dying. The April showers
- 19:20song and sequence is the only strong memory I
- 19:23have of this film. And again, I don't even know
- 19:25if it's a memory. It could literally just be
- 19:27like, I've seen the clip somewhere. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:30Yeah. It was, it was made for this written by
- 19:33Frank Churchill. He wrote the music and Larry
- 19:36Morey wrote the lyrics. I got you. One other
- 19:39thing, just before we go on to the sequel, one
- 19:43thing that I wrote down, I'm, I'm really curious
- 19:46to see if. other disney classics do this loads
- 19:51of this film doesn't have sound effects like
- 19:55it's barren of sound effects there's a couple
- 19:59of birds tweeting and that's about it the rest
- 20:03is score like the score kind of takes over the
- 20:09sound effects so you know how in fantasia there
- 20:11was the crashing waves and stuff like that yeah
- 20:13they do the exact same thing here yeah and i'm
- 20:16just wondering if that's well firstly i was wondering
- 20:19is the sequel gonna do that and are the sequels
- 20:23when animation modernizers gonna carry on this
- 20:27trope of using score as sound effects or are
- 20:32they just going to do regular sound effects?
- 20:34What's going on? And we will get that answer
- 20:37in Bambi 2 because I have an answer. Just before
- 20:41we move on, I wrote down a couple of trivia things.
- 20:45I already mentioned the line, man was in the
- 20:48forest. Apparently at Disney, this became code
- 20:51for Walt Disney's coming down the corridors between
- 20:53animes. In 2018, a poacher in Missouri was sentenced
- 21:00to a year in prison, and part of his sentence
- 21:02was that he had to watch this movie once a month
- 21:04for that year. No way! Which is pretty... I know
- 21:09that's pretty funny, but also, like, I appreciate,
- 21:12like, look what you did to Bambi! Look what you've
- 21:15done! Speaking of Bambi's mother's passing away,
- 21:19Man, just the uncredited, unseen man, is number
- 21:2320 on the American Film Institute's Greatest
- 21:26villains ever. No way. We made it. We made it.
- 21:30We're up there. The last one, this isn't actually
- 21:34a sequel kind of thing, but there was originally,
- 21:37it's kind of like a throwaway line, but before
- 21:40it was made, who framed Roger Rabbit was called
- 21:42who shot Roger Rabbit. And there's a script for
- 21:45the kind of first version of that online was
- 21:48a throwaway line that Judge Doom is the one who
- 21:50killed Bambi's mother. oh my god i kind of love
- 21:54that it's um so i loaded the script up because
- 21:57i was like i need to verify this this sounds
- 21:59like absolute bullshit but no roger robert asks
- 22:01eddie why do you hate tunes and he's like tune
- 22:04killed my wife the same tune that killed bambi's
- 22:06mother or something like that um That's great.
- 22:12That's a cute little throwaway. That's really
- 22:14good. I've just seen, it says that Paul McCartney
- 22:18has credited the shooting of Bambi's mother for
- 22:21his initial interest in animal rights. Oh my
- 22:24god, that's mad. That is crazy. Go off, King.
- 22:29You know what, right? That's pretty cool, because
- 22:31then I imagine Paul McCartney's also inspired
- 22:33so many people to go vegetarian and stuff. That's
- 22:37very true, yeah. What a domino effect that this
- 22:39movie's had. for the vegan industry. Bambi's
- 22:45mother gets shot and then the dominoes lead up
- 22:47to Linda McCartney making Linda McCartney's vegetarian
- 22:50sausages. I can definitely see why a little kid
- 22:55would watch this and be like, you know what?
- 22:57I'm done with meat. Maybe not. That deer looks
- 23:01too happy. Oh, dear. Anyway, shall we get on
- 23:06with the... with the meat and potatoes, Bambi
- 23:102. Bambi 2. Kind of a misnomer, because this
- 23:14doesn't follow the event of Bambi, really. No,
- 23:17it does not. It slots right in the middle, baby!
- 23:21I think, like, a lot of these films, they get
- 23:24these delayed sequels, and I think, like, a cynical
- 23:26person's, or just, I guess, a normal person's
- 23:29reaction is like, why do you need to make this?
- 23:31Like we said before, a lot of these are closed
- 23:32books. And they really don't help their case
- 23:36where they're like, ah, there's nothing to really
- 23:37do at the end. So we just, it's an extra hour
- 23:39of unseen stuff that I guess we didn't see in
- 23:41the middle of the movie. Like this opens right
- 23:44when, it literally opens with the scene recreated
- 23:46of Bambi finding out his mother died. And then
- 23:49- Was it recreated or was it - or was it just
- 23:52ripped straight from the film? Because it seemed
- 23:54too perfect, and it seemed like it was the exact
- 23:58same. You know what I mean? I'm not sure, actually.
- 24:01I know the voice actor was the same as the original,
- 24:03despite it sounding a lot like Patrick Stewart,
- 24:06but I guess that's just a nice coincidence. Do
- 24:09we not see an overhead shot of it now as well?
- 24:13Yes, yeah, you're right. But when it pans down
- 24:16to the den or around the den, I can't remember,
- 24:20it looks like that and then maybe it transitions
- 24:23into it. But I could be wrong. I probably am.
- 24:26If it's the same voice, it's probably the same
- 24:28animation. Maybe. But yeah, first thing I wrote,
- 24:32oh god, what an awful place to start. Yeah, it's
- 24:34a very miserable start to a movie. I summarised
- 24:37Bambi, so you have the pleasure of trying to
- 24:39summarise what this is about. Okay. Bambi 2 follows...
- 24:45middle of bambi's journey uh as he's growing
- 24:49into an adolescent uh that we see at the end
- 24:53of bambi one um and it is a this is going to
- 24:58be one of those sad dad game stories so like
- 25:02Your new god of war, your last of us, all of
- 25:05this. A reluctant father takes a young person
- 25:10on a journey and that's exactly what it is. I
- 25:13was right on the money. Oh my god. Yeah, this
- 25:15is a, what would you say? It's a tale of friendship,
- 25:20building your relationships with your friends
- 25:23and a father rekindling his love with his son.
- 25:28Would you add any more to that? Not really. You
- 25:30threw me through with that God of War thing because
- 25:31I was just sat in astonishment like, oh my God,
- 25:33it is. I think like... It really is. One of the
- 25:40major issues, I think, with the first one is...
- 25:43Well, it's like an issue now, I think. I didn't
- 25:46care for the dad. Like, his deadbeat dad just
- 25:48standing to the side like... He's just like kind
- 25:52of mewing on the hill. Like, aura maxing. Yeah,
- 25:55yeah. Just like... and then i didn't like how
- 25:58that translated into the end and where like bambi
- 26:00just also starts to mew on the hill um and leave
- 26:03his pregnant wife yeah i guess like when i realized
- 26:06what this is going to be i was like oh okay cool
- 26:08this could actually add some context to that
- 26:11and maybe improve upon it just uh on the first
- 26:13one i think like part of the reason that there's
- 26:16three reasons i think why the dad is like that
- 26:19one is just nature like that's how these are
- 26:22The second is, it's the 40s, and that's just
- 26:25how men are. And then the third is, it was 1942,
- 26:29and some people theorize that it could be, like,
- 26:32as a sign of, like, your father's off at war.
- 26:35Like, this is kind of, like, how the situation
- 26:36is right now. Oh, yeah, that's a good point.
- 26:40And none of those are, like, confirmed, but that's
- 26:42just your three, like... However, they kept it
- 26:46the same. I wrote that... Bambi's dad is like
- 26:51a trad wife wanter. He's a what? What did you
- 26:55just say? Do you know what trad wives are? No.
- 26:59It's like traditional wives. It's where people
- 27:02want the stereotypical... Yeah, exactly. He's
- 27:11a trad wife wanter because he's just a horrible
- 27:14little bastard in this, isn't he? Until later
- 27:17in the film. But yeah, so I don't think it was
- 27:20because it was the 40s, because this got made
- 27:23in 2006. Yeah, but I guess also, like, you're
- 27:26kind of handcuffing yourself to what came before,
- 27:29especially when you put it in the middle of your
- 27:30goddamn movie. Like, what are you... Yeah, that's
- 27:33very, very true. Because this is actually, we
- 27:37haven't mentioned it yet, this is a record. winning
- 27:39film um this is the longest this is a world record
- 27:43for like the longest gap between the original
- 27:45and the sequel so bambi 1 is 42 bambi 2 is 2006
- 27:49so this is a 64 year gap between original and
- 27:53sequel which is the longest gap that any film
- 27:55has wow mad isn't it wow i did not know that
- 28:00that's crazy and i actually have like i don't
- 28:03know if you do this a lot i i sometimes think
- 28:05like there's so many people in the world that
- 28:07exists now and have exist that most circumstances
- 28:10grounded circumstances will have happened reasonably
- 28:13and i reckon there was a guy who watched bambi
- 28:17as a little kid when i first came out and all
- 28:19his life was being like that was the best film
- 28:22I've ever seen they need to make a sequel I can't
- 28:24wait to make a sequel you know it hits the 90s
- 28:27you see Lion King 2 start getting music I'm just
- 28:29waiting for that Bambi 2 And then it finally
- 28:31gets announced and he's like, I told you they'd
- 28:34make it. And then, you know, what, he'd have
- 28:36been like, what, like 70, 75 when it came out?
- 28:39And then, like, the day before it comes out,
- 28:41he probably died because they waited 64 years.
- 28:43Oh. He just dies. He's like, he gets his popcorn,
- 28:48he sits down, he's in the theatre, and then he's
- 28:50just like, He died doing what he loved. He just
- 28:53dies. Watching Bambi. The only thing that he
- 28:56sees is Bambi going, Mother! And then he just
- 29:01dies. oh dear you want to do all this like character
- 29:07arc with the dad that's cool but also like I
- 29:10guess your very decision to make this an integral
- 29:13is what they call it is handcuffing you to like
- 29:17how much can we develop this dad because if you're
- 29:20nasty you could really pause the first one then
- 29:22watch this and then go back to the first one
- 29:23and just watch this like one big seamless continuity
- 29:25and it probably doesn't work that well I was
- 29:28gonna say because they kind of do they do manage
- 29:32to develop the dad quite a lot he um he starts
- 29:36off very similar to what he was like in the um
- 29:41in the first one very stoic and mewing on the
- 29:45uh like 90 of this film all he's doing is just
- 29:50standing and like looking at bambi and being
- 29:53like what the fuck are you doing kind of thing
- 29:56i do like that they address that as well they
- 29:58have bambi literally go up to him and he's like
- 30:00doing his little mew stance and like what are
- 30:02you doing what is this he's like i'm observing
- 30:08It's difficult to explain. What? No, it's not.
- 30:12Explain it to him. He's just disassociating.
- 30:15Yeah. I'm entering the fourth dimension, Bambi.
- 30:20I think everything in this film with Bambi and
- 30:24his dad, and it's generic, it's formulaic, it's
- 30:27everything you could want to say, but it worked
- 30:29for me. It was just sweet and... Patrick Stewart
- 30:32did a really good job as his dad. Do you find
- 30:34yourself shocked that he'd be in this, even though
- 30:36he literally played a piece of shit in the Emoji
- 30:38Movie? Yeah, 100%. When I remembered that, I
- 30:41was like, oh yeah, okay. Yeah, he also plays
- 30:45a main character in American Dad as well. I feel
- 30:50like he just loves to act. I love him. He's great.
- 30:53He just does everything. And yeah, he's wicked.
- 30:56And he's great in this. His voice is amazing.
- 30:58Because of the big gap as well, Parrick Stewart's
- 31:00the only actor in this that would have been alive
- 31:02when the first Bambi came out. Oh my God. Bambi
- 31:06himself is played by Alexander Gould, I think
- 31:09his name is, who played Nemo in Finding Nemo.
- 31:12No way! So Disney must have had him on there.
- 31:14This is a cool little lost little kid voice that
- 31:16we can come back to if we ever need to make a
- 31:18Bambi sequel for whatever reason. And they did.
- 31:20No way. That's cool. I think as well with this,
- 31:23like I say, I think all the father -son stuff
- 31:26kind of works, but something that doesn't work
- 31:28for me is the other stuff, which is Bambi hanging
- 31:33out with his mates. Thumper is so annoying in
- 31:36this. I liked him in the first one, but I hated
- 31:39him in this. Rabbit stew's coming, my friend.
- 31:43And he's gonna chop him up and put him in a stew.
- 31:46Do you not think the same? He was so annoying.
- 31:48His entire character in this movie is that he
- 31:51hates his sisters because of the girls. Shut
- 31:53up, man. Yeah, I agree. I think Thumper's definitely
- 31:58worse. I think Flower's quite fun. Yeah, I like
- 32:01Flower. There were two fart jokes, which was
- 32:04crazy. Also, I'm surprised that they didn't do
- 32:07some kind of fart joke with there being a skunk
- 32:11in the first one. I was the same. When the second
- 32:14one did a fart joke, I was like, that sucks for
- 32:16this, but also good restraint on them in the
- 32:18first one. Exactly, yeah. But yeah, I think I
- 32:22love the father. some dynamic it feels like and
- 32:27i was getting annoyed at the start because in
- 32:30the first one bambi's newborn he's curious he's
- 32:34just going around and exploring and looking at
- 32:36things and you know clumsily getting into like
- 32:39little accidents and stuff like that in this
- 32:42he's just a fucking dumbass he's so stupid he's
- 32:46stupid he does so many no he does so many stupid
- 32:51things um and and the curiosity is just replaced
- 32:55with him being really stupid by the way i like
- 32:58this film i really like this film but that pissed
- 33:03me off I thought he was just a sweet little boy
- 33:06he just does silly little things and is just
- 33:09trying to like show off to his dad and it ends
- 33:12up like to me it just seemed like all of that
- 33:15lovely like innocent curiosity of him as a kid
- 33:19has just disappeared he's not curious he's just
- 33:23stupid and just walking into walls and being
- 33:26an idiot oh i kind of liked it he's like he's
- 33:30lost his mother he's got this dad who doesn't
- 33:31really like him clearly and i just thought he
- 33:34was sweet he gets like tricked really early on
- 33:36in like a really kind of harrowing scene i don't
- 33:39know if you appreciate it don't know if you liked
- 33:41it or not but there's kind of a reference early
- 33:42on that man has this new thing He blows down
- 33:46a stick and it sounds like us. So basically it's
- 33:49just like a dear call thing. But Bambi hears
- 33:51it as his mother's voice and it is so sad. It's
- 33:55because just before that he has the dream about
- 33:59seeing his mum. Which is beautiful. I loved that.
- 34:03It was so, that nearly got me. I love the animation
- 34:07in that dream. Bambi's like constantly nuzzling
- 34:10into his mother. Like, oh man, I just really
- 34:13break my heart, man. Yeah. It doesn't even break
- 34:15from him as well. Or maybe it does, but I can't
- 34:18remember. I feel like it just sticks on his face
- 34:22as well. Nuzzling in and his mom like leans down
- 34:25into him, but it's just this like extreme closeup
- 34:28of, of Bambi nuzzling against his mom. And I
- 34:31was so scared that we, were gonna see that and
- 34:34then he was gonna have a nightmare and he was
- 34:36just gonna see her get shot or something i was
- 34:39like please don't do this and then it ended up
- 34:41being lovely yeah and then it went into that
- 34:44part It's, like, Predator kind of stuff as well.
- 34:47Like, you know when Predator, like, copies people's
- 34:49voices? But, like, for Bambi... Yeah! It really
- 34:52is! And, um... I'm here! Oh! I'm here! It's so
- 34:58creepy for, like, a little kid's film. Yeah.
- 35:01Um, I did say, no, Bambi, you fucking idiot.
- 35:04You just got told about this. No! He did! He
- 35:09got told! Like, I know that... I know that Rano,
- 35:12um, said... Oh, yeah, man has this thing. And
- 35:19it's like, yeah, believe him. They do. I don't
- 35:24know. It feels like they should have had him
- 35:26exaggerate a little bit more so it wouldn't be
- 35:29believable. He's a little boy. When you literally
- 35:32hear someone say, hey, they've got this thing
- 35:37that can copy us. And then you start hearing
- 35:40a voice. And it doesn't say anything else. It
- 35:43just says, hey. It's me. Kind of thing. Run away.
- 35:47Don't go towards it. You fucking idiot Bambi.
- 35:52It's a little boy. He lost his mum. I don't care.
- 35:58I thought it was beautiful. I was in on it. I
- 36:01believed it. I think he would have... Really?
- 36:04It's a little kid. Oh my god. I could trap you
- 36:08in a giant mousetrap. No, because I'm a 30 year
- 36:11old man. I imagine though, like a little six
- 36:16year old or something, like if your mother's
- 36:18just died and then you think you're here or like,
- 36:20I was like, yeah, I could see that happening.
- 36:22The animation though, when he, when he gets out
- 36:25and he realizes it is a trap and the dogs come
- 36:27in. Yes. Yeah. Obviously this is direct to DVD.
- 36:31The budget's much lower. Um, it looks well animated.
- 36:34I don't, I don't mean this as a critique, like.
- 36:37of the artists at all it's digital ink and paint
- 36:40it looks a lot flatter than what it did before
- 36:42and that's just a restriction i wrote the exact
- 36:45like something similar i said something gets
- 36:47lost in some of the animation like it's beautiful
- 36:50but there is this like character that's kind
- 36:54of lost it looks too clean it looks um i don't
- 37:00i don't know how to describe it it kind of lacks
- 37:02like dimension and shadows and stuff like that
- 37:05just yes yeah yeah there's yeah i think you've
- 37:10you've got it spot on there but yeah like you
- 37:13say there's this that that scene is is stunning
- 37:17and it's a nice kind of mirror to his mum getting
- 37:20shot scene from the first one the animators seem
- 37:24to know the limits and to make up for that they
- 37:27try and match the style of the original with
- 37:28the the big sharp shocking colors like kind of
- 37:32like like with the deer fight you mentioned in
- 37:33the first one like yes yeah yeah yeah they try
- 37:36to use that to kind of make up for like the limitations
- 37:38that they do have 100 and i it worked really
- 37:42well i i love it um i think that scene is um
- 37:46awesome yeah and the dogs are so scary yeah they're
- 37:49so like visceral and yeah am i right in thinking
- 37:53we don't see the dogs in the original until like
- 37:55the very end so yeah very is where you his first
- 38:00time seeing them oh yeah yeah yeah very true
- 38:03uh and he freezes and that becomes like quite
- 38:06a big thing in the film him freezing his dad's
- 38:09going get up bambi i i thought the freezing bit
- 38:13was uh like really well done like yeah it was
- 38:17it was like a great representation of the literal
- 38:21deer in headlights kind of thing and also i don't
- 38:24know the the part where you'd see like a glint
- 38:27in the thing that was great it's a sniper scope
- 38:30it's like wow oh my god man man is coming playing
- 38:36card did you say man is spawn camping they're
- 38:43camping at meadows but then again like i think
- 38:48like this stuff is like great but like oh you
- 38:52know i don't know it's a very frustrating film
- 38:54because at the same time like as an adult watching
- 38:57this i can be like oh this is a great exploration
- 39:00of like toxic masculinity with his dad and trying
- 39:02to get like your place and his grief with his
- 39:06mother and i don't need The little bunny rabbits
- 39:09to have their little funny bits to cheer me up
- 39:11because I'm not a little kid. At the same time,
- 39:13I understand that it is a kid's film and we have
- 39:15to have that, but it's just so clumsy compared
- 39:19to the original. It's a lot more vocal, it's
- 39:21a lot more try -hard, and it's a lot more modern
- 39:23humour. Yeah. I totally agree. I think that Thumper's
- 39:30annoying and him being annoyed at his sisters
- 39:33is just stupid. But it's kid stuff, isn't it?
- 39:36You always don't necessarily... love your siblings
- 39:39and all of that and you try and be cooler than
- 39:41them. It's fine. It's not my favourite part.
- 39:44I think Bambi and his dad is the meat and potatoes
- 39:48of the story. The part afterwards where he has
- 39:51to become brave. I feel like he recovered way
- 39:54too quickly from that near -death experience.
- 39:57Like, have you not learnt anything? Like, come
- 40:01on, lad. You nearly just got mauled by dogs and
- 40:04then you're walking along next to your dad and
- 40:06you're like... Dad, let me come with you. I'm
- 40:09brave as hell. And he's like, what are you talking
- 40:13about? No, I get that. He wants to... He's embarrassed
- 40:17that he did freeze and he wants to do better
- 40:19and he just wants the opportunity to do that.
- 40:21Like, there's that cute little montage with...
- 40:24I say cute. I didn't like it. There's a montage
- 40:27where Thumper's teaching him to be more like,
- 40:29you know, growl at whatever you're scared of.
- 40:32Like, whatever. Cool. Yeah. I didn't care for
- 40:35it. I didn't... You know... Just while we're
- 40:37on the topic, I hated the groundhog and the porcupine.
- 40:42They suck. The porcupine, I'll just bring up,
- 40:46because he was the one that Bambi has to overcome
- 40:48in that little montage. He sucks. And I watched
- 40:52the special features for this, and the filmmakers
- 40:54were all like, everyone just fell in love with
- 40:56the porcupine. What are you talking about? He
- 40:58sucks. He's horrible. It's a terrible character.
- 41:02Yeah, he's awful also. I want to ask you this
- 41:07question. Is a deer being called moose a slur
- 41:11in that world? It didn't seem nice. He doesn't
- 41:17say it with love in his heart. Yeah, he's like,
- 41:20are you looking at your moose? Oh, God. Yeah,
- 41:25but no, I agree. I did not enjoy... The groundhog
- 41:29was pissing me off because he wouldn't come out
- 41:32of his fucking thing and then... I was like,
- 41:34why are they all gathered around for this? And
- 41:36then, obviously, it was the explanation that
- 41:39it was to see if spring is coming, blah, blah,
- 41:41blah, whatever. We know spring is coming. The
- 41:44snow's melted. But can this groundhog see his
- 41:50shadow? He sucks. It makes no sense. It makes
- 41:55no sense. And yeah, I didn't like him. The porcupine
- 41:59scene is... fine but it felt like it went on
- 42:03forever yeah um the humor for the porcupine feel
- 42:06i know i keep saying this but it feels very like
- 42:092000s like oh it's just a little grumpy old man
- 42:12i didn't care for i didn't it didn't seem to
- 42:15fit with the rest of these characters totally
- 42:18because it felt so like all the others every
- 42:21single other character is either you know quite
- 42:24stoic You've got the kind of bumbling funny from
- 42:28Friendly Owl. You've got the loveliness of Thumper
- 42:34and Flower and all the kids and stuff like that.
- 42:38So just having a redneck... porcupine out of
- 42:42nowhere just feels so out of touch and it wouldn't
- 42:45be something that would be in the original at
- 42:48all you ever make new character well i say new
- 42:51new in quotation marks is the deer called rono
- 42:54who's bambi's rival deer i hate him so much he's
- 42:59such a smuggler it's just a generic character
- 43:02of like he's a bully deer um but he's actually
- 43:05like not as tough as he thinks Did you realise
- 43:08that this is the same deer from the first film
- 43:10that he fights? Yes. As soon as he came in, I
- 43:13was like, oh yeah, that's that one. What an odd
- 43:15decision. It's very weird, but it felt like they
- 43:19needed another layer of... rivalry i guess yeah
- 43:24i think like it feels almost like the negative
- 43:27people have with star wars things where it's
- 43:29like everything has to be explained like we have
- 43:31to bring glupshido back it's like we need to
- 43:34build up this rivalry between bambi and that
- 43:36one d we fought for a minute like i guess we
- 43:38have to build it up yeah yeah for like five seconds
- 43:41or like you know five seconds in the original
- 43:44he fights this deer that doesn't have a voice
- 43:47or anything like that it's just it's just a small
- 43:50fight It's nature happening and Bambi, you know,
- 43:54tries to do it. So that now, of course, he has
- 43:57to have a backstory in his whole wiki page. Yeah,
- 44:01I didn't like him. I think he's a smug little...
- 44:05prick and i know you're supposed to think that
- 44:07he's the rival bambi's the good guy kind of thing
- 44:10he's a stereotypical bully bad guy kind of thing
- 44:14and for the time yeah sure yeah for go on direct
- 44:18the dvd kids film it's exactly what you'd expect
- 44:20from exactly yeah 100 you mentioned wiki page
- 44:24that i just have to mention like remember um
- 44:26they've changed it now but like the disney wiki
- 44:29page haven't bambi's mother's goal was to raise
- 44:32and protect bambi and then it had brackets failed
- 44:34oh yeah um i just want to jump to the ending
- 44:40for this quickly because it all kind of comes
- 44:43together with bambi gets sent away with a new
- 44:45deer um a doe female deer and while she's getting
- 44:49sent away she falls for the trap of man It feels
- 44:52like these deers have always fallen for the trap
- 44:53of man. And Bambi has to face his fears to kind
- 44:56of, like, get the dogs away from her so she can
- 44:58get free, which obviously wins the affection
- 45:00of his dad. He's like, oh, Bambi is brave after
- 45:03all, it turns out. The climax was really well
- 45:05animated, though. It was, like, brilliantly animated
- 45:07and, again, had the popping colours and... Are
- 45:10you talking about the whole thing from Mina,
- 45:12the doe getting trapped, to the finale kind of
- 45:16thing? Yeah, where Bambi's kind of caught a...
- 45:18He ends up in a corner, he has to kind of scale
- 45:20this... little rock wall to get away from the
- 45:23dogs yeah it's quite quite nice as he's climbing
- 45:26because he does similar stuff to what he does
- 45:28in the first one yeah so it's kind of like but
- 45:31he does it a lot more clumsily kind of thing
- 45:33yeah um and i kind of like that it's like he's
- 45:36learned how to do i mean it's it's needless yeah
- 45:40there's no need for them to add that in but it's
- 45:43quite nice that he kind of you know he knocks
- 45:46some of the rocks down and they hit one of the
- 45:48dogs kind of thing and and he does that in the
- 45:51future as well great cool nice little learning
- 45:55moment kind of thing yeah it's a nice little
- 45:58detail but like I say totally needless but it
- 46:00was well animated and I really liked Bambi breaking
- 46:06his no kill rule and booting that dog off the
- 46:08cliff to his death that was wild I wrote in big
- 46:11letters Bambi dog murderer I don't think he kills
- 46:16anyone else in these films no I guess it was
- 46:20kill or be killed in that moment. That was crazy.
- 46:23Just to go back a little bit before, but when
- 46:25Bambi's hiding in the grass and you get that
- 46:30top -down shot of the dogs circling, that was
- 46:35sick. They looked so slinky and like, I really
- 46:40liked that. I think... uh the whole last sequence
- 46:43is fantastic it's genuinely really really good
- 46:48yeah i agree yeah um and it's oh it just brings
- 46:52me back to that frustrating kind of thing of
- 46:54like you've watched it a day I watched it yesterday,
- 46:57so I was glad to have that kind of brick because
- 46:59every time I thought about it yesterday, like,
- 47:01what did I think of that film? I just pictured
- 47:04that little rabbit and all those terrible jokes
- 47:06and the songs in this are goddamn awful. They're
- 47:09proper... Oh, they're terrible. It's like very
- 47:122006 Disney Channel songs just chucked in and
- 47:16it just doesn't work. But then today when I thought
- 47:18about it, I was thinking more about the dad stuff,
- 47:21the animation with Bambi's feet with the dogs,
- 47:23the horrible dream. with his mother it's so frustrating
- 47:27that they're both the same movie yeah it really
- 47:29is a film of two halves there's a half that's
- 47:33great and half that's like whatever give or take
- 47:36it and the end where Bambi falls off and Patrick
- 47:40Stewart deer goes up to him and he's like he
- 47:42you know lays down next to him and he's like
- 47:45my son oh no And he's just sat there and he's
- 47:49looking at him. He gets up to walk away without
- 47:51even checking that his son is, like, alive. He
- 47:55was just about to leave his dead son there, not
- 47:57even carry his son on his antlers over to the
- 48:00forest or anything like that. And I know that's
- 48:03not what they would do in nature or whatever,
- 48:05but dude was just about to leave his dead son
- 48:08on the fucking, like, a Mount Everest body kind
- 48:12of thing. I guess it tracks, but... Yeah, good
- 48:17point. I did like the... He has that line where
- 48:21he goes... Because he keeps saying, like, a prince
- 48:23does not woohoo and all this stuff. And he goes
- 48:26to say that to Bambi and stops himself because
- 48:28he realizes, like, he's not really being a dad.
- 48:30He's just being, like, this horrible mentor.
- 48:34A prince does not fall from a cliff and die.
- 48:36A prince does not break his no -kill rule. No
- 48:40matter how many dogs are climbing at you. Oh,
- 48:43God. This is so gross. So we get all of that.
- 48:48Before that as well, we have a nice montage of
- 48:51Bambi and his dad growing closer together and
- 48:54it's very lovely. Even the dad is learning to
- 48:58be silly and all of that where they're playing
- 49:00with the grasshoppers. Lovely. So then we get
- 49:03to the end and Thumper is telling his version
- 49:07of the story where he saves the day. No, you
- 49:10didn't. You didn't do a fucking thing, you idiot.
- 49:13And then... thumpers like afterwards bambi has
- 49:16to go off with his dad and the lady felene is
- 49:22it oh bambi's uh bambi's missus yeah thumpers
- 49:26like oh no we we never get to see him again oh
- 49:30he's always busy and then felene goes i know
- 49:34isn't it wonderful what What are you talking
- 49:40about? It's meant to be. It's meant to be. It's
- 49:44got to be this. It's meant to be like, isn't
- 49:46it nice that Bambi's busy because he's finally
- 49:48got that relationship with his dad? But it comes
- 49:50off so mean. It must be. It comes off like, yeah,
- 49:56isn't it great? Now I'm going to go off with
- 49:58Rono. We've never seen Bambi anymore. Thank God.
- 50:02Thank fuck. That guy's pissing me off. It did
- 50:07feel very mean. oh so uh it made me laugh so
- 50:14much and then yeah we get the lovely part takes
- 50:18him to a beautiful area he's like oh it's beautiful
- 50:20here ah yes this is where i met your mother and
- 50:24for some reason in my head all i could think
- 50:27about was that stupid batman meme where it's
- 50:29like this is where i watched my parents die cowabunga
- 50:35and i was like i was trying to write down a joke
- 50:38for it this is where i watched my wife die bambi
- 50:41oh i really like that scene as well oh it's lovely
- 50:45and the butterflies are the same as the dream
- 50:48it's really nice but yeah for i just couldn't
- 50:51get that stupid batman meme out of my head but
- 50:54yeah it was lovely it nearly made me cry as well
- 50:56yeah oh so yeah that's pretty much what bambi
- 50:592 is i got a couple of like quick little facts
- 51:01here before we plug it into our ranking system
- 51:03for you more facts so uh this one i mentioned
- 51:07already it's a record holder for the gap between
- 51:10original and sequel it's also actually a record
- 51:12holder this one is really surprising uh it sold
- 51:15the most dvds in one day at the time so it sold
- 51:192 .6 million copies on day one which was the
- 51:22record what on day one What? I couldn't fact
- 51:29check it, but apparently, yeah. Wow, real anticipated
- 51:35sequel. Yeah, that's what happens when you wait
- 51:3864 years. That must have made its money back
- 51:42so quickly. You've really thrown me now. Let
- 51:44me just double check that. No, go with your gut.
- 51:49We only talk facts. First week, sorry. First
- 51:54week. oh okay that's still pretty good though
- 51:57andy andy breaking news i looked up bambi 2 and
- 52:02something has come up which i didn't know so
- 52:06it's not necessarily related to the disney one
- 52:08because bambi's now in fucking freeholding it's
- 52:12a live action bambi horror what the fuck yeah
- 52:15it's part of that stupid winnie the pooh blood
- 52:18and honey universe i think oh is it oh my god
- 52:23they look so boring i want to see what did it
- 52:27get it got 63 damn that's more than hit anticipated
- 52:32disney sequel tron aries right now i was just
- 52:35gonna say it's more than tron legacy as well
- 52:38uh folks before the podcast we were just having
- 52:43a quick discussion i am one of the 14 Tron fans
- 52:47in the world. And at the time of recording, the
- 52:51Tron Ares reviews have come out and it heartbreakingly
- 52:53got a rotten review. It did go up to fresh, though.
- 52:56You did say that. Fresh as of now. By the time
- 52:58you guys are listening, it's probably rotten
- 52:59again. It's probably bombed and I've been arrested
- 53:04as an enemy of the state for liking Tron too
- 53:07much. That's depressing, though, that the Bambi
- 53:10horror movie got more than Tron Legacy, one of
- 53:12my favorite films ever. That's crazy. Oh, my
- 53:17God. That's an interesting fact as well. Anyway,
- 53:20carry on. I'm sorry for interrupting. Carry on
- 53:23with your facts, please. That was a good fact.
- 53:26We've mentioned a few times this was straight
- 53:28to DVD, but as you can probably tell, we're in
- 53:30the UK, and here it was in the cinemas, along
- 53:33with 24 other countries. Was it? Yeah. Ah. See,
- 53:37I saw that it... Did it get... It first got released
- 53:41in Argentina or something like that. Yeah, I
- 53:44don't know why. And that was theatrical as well.
- 53:45So yeah, this is also an interesting fact. I've
- 53:48researched it a few times. It seems legit, but
- 53:50it just doesn't sound right. So Patrick Stewart,
- 53:53before doing this, has turned down the role of
- 53:57King Triton in The Little Mermaid, Cogsworth
- 54:00in Beauty and the Beast, Jafar in Aladdin, Zazu
- 54:03in The Lion King, and General Radcliffe in Pocahontas,
- 54:07and Zeus in Hercules. to ask this guy one two
- 54:11three four five six seven times before he accepted
- 54:14it and finally the one that actually got him
- 54:17to do a disney movie was bambi 2 i have no idea
- 54:21why he was he was like i waited i've waited 64
- 54:25years he's the guy he's the guy i go when was
- 54:31he born he was born oh my god he was born when
- 54:34this was out He's the guy! He waited his entire
- 54:40life for Bambi 2. It's why he got into acting.
- 54:44And then the only other thing I've written down
- 54:46is this was originally called a much better name,
- 54:48Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest, which
- 54:50is such a banging name. That is a cool name.
- 54:55And it's more legit than Bambi 2. It's not 2.
- 54:572 attenuates to me that this is continuing. It's
- 55:00not. No, it's Bambi 1 and a half. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:03It's like Bambi Extended Edition and then like
- 55:05Zack Snyder's Bambi. Yeah, that's, yeah. Should
- 55:09we do a Change UK thing to change this name to
- 55:13Zack Snyder's Bambi? Just before we do plug it
- 55:15into the ranking, actually, I just want to quickly
- 55:17mention, because this one did... It is meant
- 55:22to get a CGI. The live action remake, which is
- 55:25kind of stolen right now because Disney don't
- 55:27really know what to do with these. Why would
- 55:28you make this? They're so boring. I know. They
- 55:31actually had someone pretty talented attached
- 55:34to it. It's Sarah Pauly. What did she do before?
- 55:37So she's actually won an Academy Award for Best
- 55:40Screenplay for Women Talking. Oh, wow. I don't
- 55:43know why she was ever attached to do Bambi, but
- 55:45she's not now, I think. She's realised the worth.
- 55:48Yeah, she's been taken off now. I say she's been
- 55:50taken off. She removed herself. Cool. Let's plug
- 55:55it into the ranking system. Yeah. Where do you
- 56:00reckon you're going to put this one? Do you know,
- 56:04this is a lot tougher than Fantasia 2000. I enjoyed
- 56:09Fantasia 2000 a lot. There's a lot of this that
- 56:13I really enjoy. fantasia had issues but the issues
- 56:17went by so fast that like it didn't hinder it
- 56:20really whereas this like there's huge chunks
- 56:23of the movie where i'm like i don't like this
- 56:25and now yeah i can't be bothered um i'm gonna
- 56:29knock off bargain bin i don't think it deserves
- 56:32i agree yeah there's more heart and soul and
- 56:34artistry than that i think i'm gonna knock off
- 56:37disney classics as well i don't think it hits
- 56:41those highs so i'm between diamond and straight
- 56:44to video where are you feeling uh i think i'm
- 56:48the same so uh if you don't remember from last
- 56:50week we start with disney classics at the top
- 56:52that's the top tier we have a second tier of
- 56:55diamond edition straight to videos third and
- 56:57bargain bins bottom so i think we're agreeing
- 57:00we wouldn't put it in the very top of the very
- 57:01bottom yeah i think that honestly there's a lot
- 57:04of really good stuff here And it's held back
- 57:07by, you mentioned earlier, the first film, a
- 57:10lot of it is almost music video slash nature
- 57:13documentary -ish. It really lets the art and
- 57:16the animation and just these cute little characters
- 57:18speak for itself. And in this one, they do speak
- 57:21for themselves too much, and I don't like what
- 57:23they're saying. They're really irritating. They
- 57:26need to shut the hell up. I much prefer... I
- 57:31prefer the old style, I guess, than this more
- 57:35modern version. Agreed, yeah. So having said
- 57:38that... I am tripping up a bit because I did
- 57:40really like all the stuff of Bambi and his dad
- 57:42in Overcome the Grief. It's formulaic, it's generic,
- 57:45you can see exactly where it's going to go. It
- 57:47even has that trope that I usually hate in movies
- 57:50where it's the misunderstanding, like, he wanted
- 57:53to get rid of Bambi, but now he's grown to love
- 57:56him, but now the D has shown up and he's like,
- 57:58oh, Bambi, I didn't mean to get... Fine, go,
- 58:01Bambi! okay that gets resolved way too quickly
- 58:05yeah it's kind of pointless it's like it's just
- 58:08he goes off and then bambi basically forgives
- 58:11him gives him a hug and then runs off and then
- 58:13we get the intense end yeah i really want to
- 58:16say diamond edition which is our second highest
- 58:18one uh i really want to say this is a strong
- 58:22film that takes the confines of being an interquil
- 58:25it takes the confines of the budget and it takes
- 58:27the confines of like being a 64 yeah too late
- 58:30sequel and it does a lot of good with it but
- 58:33i don't that stupid rabbit and his porcupine
- 58:38friend i think i gotta go straight to video man
- 58:41i i totally agree um i think it doesn't live
- 58:46up to 64 years if i had waited if i was patrick's
- 58:50yeah and i would waited 64 years for this to
- 58:54come out i would be a little bit disappointed
- 58:56yeah watching it now whatever it's fine i can
- 59:00just you know never have to watch that again
- 59:03yeah i think there's too many things holding
- 59:05it back i think the animation is lacking because
- 59:10of newer techniques used they didn't have the
- 59:12budget all of this yeah i think it does do some
- 59:15nice callbacks to the original in certain scenes
- 59:18i think there's some great dynamics with um dad
- 59:22and son stuff but yeah i agree new characters
- 59:25suck the uh old characters like bambi's friends
- 59:30are annoying yeah if you could just stick to
- 59:33the dad and the son but that's only half the
- 59:35film exactly like it would be a half hour short
- 59:38which i'd be all right with that'd be lovely
- 59:41big deleted scene in it yeah i feel like this
- 59:44is gonna be one where in maybe a few weeks When
- 59:49we've hit some real dregs of this. I feel like
- 59:53we might look back on this. Oh, but I don't...
- 59:56You know what? I don't really want to say right
- 59:58now, like... It's probably going to be worse,
- 1:00:01so I'll just boost it up a bit. I've got to be
- 1:00:03honest and give that straight to video right
- 1:00:05now. Keep it in there. We can revisit it later.
- 1:00:08We can come back and we can bump it up to a Disney
- 1:00:11classic when we realise the shit that we've got
- 1:00:14to go through. There is that very foreboding
- 1:00:17warning that I think a lot of what we've mentioned
- 1:00:18there is good artistry despite the budget and
- 1:00:21the limitations. There's some bad in it for sure,
- 1:00:24but I think we're going to hit a lot of these
- 1:00:25where the budget sucks and nobody cares. I'm
- 1:00:29scared. But I think I'd stick to straight -to
- 1:00:33-video for now. What about you? Agreed. Yeah,
- 1:00:36I think it's straight -to -video. I think it's
- 1:00:38edging on Diamond Edition. It's so close. If
- 1:00:43there was any sort of two -disc straight -to
- 1:00:47-video but it didn't get the Diamond Edition
- 1:00:48banner, some stupid... But we're not going to
- 1:00:51dive into subcategories. It's just... we're not
- 1:00:54doing that yet we probably will at some point
- 1:00:57it is um it's straight to video and if your kid
- 1:01:02likes bambi or if you loved it as a kid it's
- 1:01:04a fun little revisiting but it's not gonna like
- 1:01:08reinvent the wheel or add anything that the original
- 1:01:11movie didn't already give you really Yeah, and
- 1:01:13if you are going to watch this, obviously you
- 1:01:17watch it in the way where you go on Disney, you
- 1:01:20watch the first half of Bambi, you pause it,
- 1:01:23you put Bambi 2 on, you watch the entirety of
- 1:01:25that, finish it, and then you go back to the
- 1:01:28rest of Bambi 1. That's the only way to watch
- 1:01:31this. Just like a little psychopath would. I
- 1:01:34bet that's how Ed Gein watched Bambi. I bet that's
- 1:01:36a really jarring experience. This is going to
- 1:01:39be like a lot. I think this interquel thing is
- 1:01:41a thing that they do a lot as well. oh really
- 1:01:44one day we should do it that way i bet it it
- 1:01:50seems like it would just stop the film dead in
- 1:01:52its tracks dead like i don't want to do that
- 1:01:57no no but we probably will oh oh dear just like
- 1:02:04oh dear yeah what a banging joke to finish Oh,
- 1:02:12that was amazing. Yeah, I feel a little bit out
- 1:02:16of it, to be honest. I don't know what it is
- 1:02:18about this film, but I feel on a different dimension.
- 1:02:21You're in the dream dimension with Bambi's mother.
- 1:02:24Yeah, I mean, I'm coming off a... Wafting away
- 1:02:26with the butterflies. If you think I sound ill
- 1:02:29on this episode, I am coming off a bit of a bad
- 1:02:31cold and I feel delirious. And watching Bambi
- 1:02:36kick a dog off a cliff has not helped with my
- 1:02:39deliriousness. Again, rename it to Bambi Dog
- 1:02:43Murderer. But that was Bambi Wrapped. Well done
- 1:02:46us, we did it. We watched it. It was very short,
- 1:02:50that's a good thing as well. Yeah, it's like
- 1:02:5370 minutes. I think the original's 70 minutes
- 1:02:55as well. Rapid. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that's where
- 1:02:58we would put Bambi too, but James, have you got
- 1:03:00any letterbox reviews so we can find out where
- 1:03:02everyone else is writing this one? Yeah, so I
- 1:03:06think a lot of people are in the same... boat
- 1:03:09as us uh at the minute most of the reviews are
- 1:03:14sitting in the three stars that's about where
- 1:03:17i think i am yeah it's on a 2 .9 weighted average
- 1:03:21on letterboxd but yeah let's let's have a look
- 1:03:24at some reviews so shufflerless the uh youtuber
- 1:03:28says uh friend owl really out here finding hot
- 1:03:33single does in your area two and a half stars
- 1:03:39Aurora rates it three stars and says, Bambi 2,
- 1:03:43Bambi meets toxic masculinity. Yeah, God. Very
- 1:03:47true. Fucking trad wife Patrick Stewart. So nice
- 1:03:51of Disney to make a movie for the kids with daddy
- 1:03:54issues. Three stars. I feel like they've made
- 1:03:56a lot of films for the kids with daddy issues.
- 1:04:00100%. Someone's rated it one star and said, Bambi
- 1:04:03fucking kills a dog and that's treated as a triumphant
- 1:04:06moment. Disney, your main character, just killed
- 1:04:09in cold blood. What the fuck? Killed in cold
- 1:04:11blood's a bit extreme. It was kill or be killed.
- 1:04:14It wasn't cold blood. It was kill or be killed.
- 1:04:18It wasn't just a normal dog out for a walk and
- 1:04:20Bambi just kicked it off the bridge like Jack
- 1:04:22Black in Anchorman. Someone gave it five stars,
- 1:04:27read Disney sequel W. We'll see about that, because
- 1:04:30we're going to go through them all. Yeah, I have
- 1:04:32a feeling it's probably going to end up looking
- 1:04:34favourable, but we won't know until we try them.
- 1:04:39Woohoo! A prince does not woohoo. I didn't even
- 1:04:48set you up for that. That was a natural woohoo.
- 1:04:51I'm so proud of you. So, with Bambi in our rear
- 1:04:54view, what's next? Do you remember? Oh, I...
- 1:04:58No, I don't. Next, we're going to be looking
- 1:05:01at Cinderella 2 Dreams Come True. My goodness.
- 1:05:08That is a title that fills me with dread for
- 1:05:10some reason. Oh, that. Oh. Oh, I'm excited. I'm
- 1:05:18so excited. I'm so happy to be doing this with
- 1:05:21you, Andy. I actually really like Cinderella
- 1:05:24as well. So I don't know why this is filling
- 1:05:27me with dread, but it just sounds like it's going
- 1:05:29to be unbearable. I have definitely seen Cinderella
- 1:05:341. Is it like actually seen it? Or is it like
- 1:05:37you remember seeing the box art in the shop and
- 1:05:39we're going to watch it and you'd be like, oh
- 1:05:41my God, I've never seen this. There's a pumpkin?
- 1:05:46No, I definitely have seen it. Can I remember
- 1:05:49a lot of it? No. So, I will be re -watching it.
- 1:05:54and then i will be watching cinderella 2 dreams
